1. Place puff pastry squares on a baking sheet and bake at 350° F until golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside.

Have you ever had an appetizer, entrée, dessert or overall restaurant experience that you can’t stop dreaming about? For me, the restaurant is called Everyday People Café in Saugatuck-Douglas, Michigan. Here’s my re-creation of one of their delectable appetizers, which would make the perfect starter for a special New Year’s Eve dinner for two (or double/ triple the recipe to serve at a holiday dinner party).
5” x 5” puff pastry squares Unsalted butter Extra virgin olive oil Jumbo shrimp, peeled and de-veined, tails on (16-20 count or larger is best) Flour for dredging, as needed Sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil, drained and slivered Shallots, minced Garlic, minced Salt and pepper Vermouth (or sherry, or white wine) for deglazing Sambuca Heavy 35% cream Fresh chopped basil
2. Dredge shrimp in flour. Heat butter and olive oil in a small sauté pan over medium heat until bubbly but not brown. Add shrimp to butter-oil mixture and cook shrimps on each side for about 1-2 minutes or until golden. Add garlic and shallots to the pan and cook for one minute. 3. Add sun-dried tomatoes and sauté for 1 minute. Deglaze with dry vermouth/sherry/wine and reduce slightly. Carefully add Sambuca and flambé. 4. When flame dies down, add cream and basil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cook for another minute or two, to reduce slightly and to allow the flavours to mingle. 5. Place each puff pastry square on a large plate and pour some of the sauce on the plate for decoration. Then place 3 shrimp and half of the remaining sauce in the center of each puff pastry square. Garnish with fresh basil and serve.

CHARLOTTE ZAWADA RECEIVES 2021 VOLUNTEER AWARD KITCHENER-WATERLOO, ON (Friday, December 10, 2021) – Charlotte Zawada is the 2021 recipient of the KitchenerWaterloo Association of REALTORS® (KWAR) Volunteer Award. KWAR’s Volunteer Award is presented annually to a REALTOR® who has shown both commitment and dedication to the association and within the community. “Charlotte has a big heart, and is so deserving of this recognition,” says Megan Bell, President of KWAR. “She has been a stalwart supporter of KWAR and the community at large. Her commitment to promoting professionalism and to improving lives of others can be seen in her extensive volunteerism and leadership.” Zawada has been a member of KWAR since 2004 and is a sales representative with RE/MAX Twin City Realty. Throughout her membership with KWAR, Zawada has participated on and chaired numerous committees of the association as well as the Ontario Real Estate Association and Canadian Real Estate Association. From 2013 to 2018 she served on the KWAR board of directors and in 2016 she led the association as president. Since 2018 she has served on the board of directors of Information Technology System Ontario (formerly ORTIS), a not-for-profit corporation providing MLS® Services for 20 real estate associations in Ontario. Charlotte’s involvement in causes go back to her days as a young person championing gay and lesbian rights through grassroots organizations such as The Lesbian Organization of Kitchener (LOOK). Then as a retail store employee, she helped to lead the corporation’s United Way campaigns, and raise money to bring families from war torn Sierra Leon. Once she started her career in real estate, Zawada wanted to make a difference for those struggling to find affordable and adequate housing. She served on the Heartwood Place board of directors in the early days of its formation, and in 2019 she was on the Safe Affordable Housing Committee. Currently, Zawada is a member of the Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region board of directors. Bill Duce, Chief Executive Officer of KWAR says, “Charlotte has always been a champion of people. INGREDIENTS Makes 4-1/2 dozen cookies
2 cups 1 cup 1 tsp 3 cups 1 cup 1 tsp ½ cup
Gay Lea Butter (Unsalted), softened 500 ml Fruit or granulated sugar 250 ml Vanilla extract 5 ml All purpose flour 750 ml Cornstarch or rice flour 250 ml Salt 5 ml Cocoa powder
Using electric mixer, beat butter until very creamy. Gradually beat in sugar, beating until very light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla. In separate bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, cocoa and salt. In four additions, using a wooden spoon, stir flour mixture into butter mixture, stirring well between each addition. Transfer dough to floured surface; knead gently for 3 minutes until shortbread holds together well. Divide into three balls. Wrap each ball with plastic wrap; flatten into discs and refrigerate for 1 hour. Remove plastic wrap from one piece of dough. Flour work surface well and knead dough lightly for 30
seconds. Re-flour surface and top of dough. Roll out dough until 1/4” (5mm) thick, constantly rotating to make sure it’s not sticking to the surface and lightly dusting the top of the dough with flour. Cut out shapes, using cookie cutter. Preheat oven to 325F (160C). Transfer to parchment paper lined cookie sheets. Chill for 30 minutes or up to 8 hours. Repeat with remaining chilled dough. Re-roll scraps only once, dusting with flour as necessary. Prick each cookie twice with fork tines. Bake in centre of oven for about 15 minutes or until dough is firm and underside is lightly golden. Cool on pan on racks. Transfer to racks to cool completely.

Most people spend a great deal of time in their kitchen, from cooking family meals to entertaining friends, and at times, utilizing the space as their “home office”, so it’s no wonder that this room continues to be an important space when it comes to selling your home. If a complete kitchen renovation isn’t in the plans or budget, we’ve got some great low-cost updates that are easy to implement and will rate high with your prospective buyers.
1. Light Fixtures Updating light fixtures will provide a fresh new look, but it can also improve your task lighting. Start by reviewing all of your current light fixtures in your kitchen. When were they last updated? Evaluate your chandeliers, island pendants, and any other ceiling-mounted lights. As a general rule, if the light fixtures have not been replaced within the past 15 years or so, they are likely due to be replaced. Still have your original builder’s fixtures? If so, replacing these will show buyers that you have invested in the home since it was first built.
fixtures and/or door hardware have been upgraded to an oil-rubbed bronze or black, you may want to consider replacing the faucet to match. Stainless steel sinks are becoming a thing of the past and are being traded up in favour of granite sinks and other great alternatives. If you are replacing your countertops anyway, now is the perfect time to consider replacing your sink as well (note that if you are not replacing your counters, you will need to find a sink that is comparable in size to your current sink, and may require some minor counter adjustments to be made).
2. Faucet/Sink Out with the old, and in with the new! If your faucet is showing age and/or wear, upgrading it can be a great low-cost update with a big impact. Select a faucet with a spray head that complements the overall style of the kitchen (i.e. that antique-style faucet may look nice, but if other areas of your house are more modern and tout clean lines, the traditional antique style may not be the ideal choice). Brushed nickel is still the preferred choice for the kitchen, but if your light

3. Cabinet Hardware Plastic, wooden, brass, or other outdated cabinet hardware should be upgraded to a more current style and finish. As with your faucet, brushed nickel is still the preferred choice, however, oil-rubbed bronze is a great consideration if it complements other aspects of the home. This could be one of the least expensive updates in your kitchen, but it will provide an instant facelift and breathe new life into your kitchen.
4. Refinish/Paint Kitchen Cabinets Remember that when selling a home, our goal is to provide a move-in-ready house. If the kitchen cabinets are in need of a facelift but a full renovation is not in the budget, consider painting or refinishing them instead. While grey and black cabinets are on-trend, white continues to be a classic and timeless look.

Appliances Most buyers expect appliances to be left by the home sellers and sold with the home, so if your current ones are looking broken or dated, consider replacing and upgrading them to newer stainless-steel versions. Check out your local scratch and dent stores for good-quality appliances at a discounted price.

A backsplash is the finishing touch that every kitchen needs. It’s like that piece of jewelry that you need to complete your outfit before heading out on the town! When you’re dressing your kitchen, a classic backsplash will complete the look. Avoid mosaics and busy patterns and opt instead for simple subway tiles in complementary tones to your cabinets and counter. To add a little extra interest, consider a hexagon or arabesque shape in a simple white or light grey tone.

7. Countertops It truly is amazing what a new countertop can do for a kitchen. Buyers today favour granite and other stone countertops, regardless of the list price of the house. That said, it’s important to properly evaluate this upgrade from the perspective of the new homebuyers. We want to sell “move-in ready”, but if the kitchen is likely to be fully replaced by the new homeowners within a couple of years, you may wish to opt for a lower-cost countertop solution such as laminate in an updated style/ colour. If the kitchen has a great layout, however, and the cabinets are in good shape, it’s unlikely that the new owners would take on a large-scale renovation, in which case an upgrade to a stone countertop is a worthwhile investment.

Most of these life situations come without a warning. Once in a while moving also comes suddenly, but, for the most part, most people do have an inkling that it’s coming up. That doesn’t make it completely stress-free, but the good thing about it, you can mitigate some of the damage by planning ahead. Even if you don’t know the exact date it will be, because you may be waiting to first find the home you’re moving to, you can still get a head start by preparing for it in advance. Whether your next move is this month, next year or sometime in the next decade (in which case, you maybe should get some scissors out to clip this article and save it for the future), here are some tips to make the journey easier on you and your family.
USE CHECKLISTS
Most good Realtors and Real Estate Lawyers have a checklist that they share with their clients to keep them on track. These lists should include which tasks need to be done and when. You can also find sample checklists online (check with national movers, for example). Not only do you need to know what to do, but who to contact, such as your utility companies for the home you’re leaving as well as the one you’re moving to. And don’t forget things like Amazon, Hello Fresh or your magazine subscriptions.

DON’T CLOSE ON THE SAME DAY!
If you are selling a home as well as buying, getting bridge financing in place makes the whole process so much smoother. Even a few days in between moves makes a difference.
HIRE A PROFESSIONAL MOVER
This is always going to be easier, but it’s not in everyone’s budget.
ENLIST FRIENDS & FAMILY FOR HELP
If you aren’t hiring a moving company, line up dependable friends and family instead and call on their natural abilities. Some can help you pack your boxes and be the voice of reason when you are trying to decide what to take with you, what to sell and what to give away. Don’t forget that asking for help is a sign of strength. Most are willing to help out, especially if you load them up with pizza and their favourite beverages. The whole process will go much better if you are organized so that you can give simple tasks to each person, and they will be more willing to help if you let them know that all you need is to have them load the truck.
MAKE A PLAN FOR THE KIDDOS
Let’s face it, it’s always great to be able to delegate tasks. But, if doing chores isn’t a part of your children’s everyday life or if they aren’t quite old enough to pull their weight yet, now is not the time to teach them. See if they can stay a couple of nights with their grandparents or a good friend’s house. And maybe slack off a little on the screentime rules. Afterall, moving can be very stressful for kids, too.
DON’T FORGET TO THINK ABOUT PETS
It can be very traumatic for pets when there’s too much activity going on in the house. It would be ideal to take them to a pet sitter’s house for a few days in between your two homes.
PREP MEALS IN ADVANCE
You could either double up on the meals you cook leading up to the move and pack half of the food in the freezer, or you could ask a friend who may not be cut out for heavy lifting but would gladly cook a couple of meals for your family to enjoy the week or other the week after the move. This way, you don’t have to stop and start as much to cook in between the packing and unpacking.
DON’T PACK ITEMS YOU DON’T WANT
This sounds simple, but it’s easier said than done. If you have trouble making decisions, get a friend who loves you enough to be honest with you, and will be able to help you to see the value in passing items you no longer need along to someone who needs it more than you do. If your turnaround time for your move is very short (not much time between your purchase and the closing date), and if you’re not paying by the pound to move your items, it’s sometimes easier to just pack everything and sort your items as you’re unpacking in your new home. You don’t want to get sidetracked and take 10x longer packing when you’re already short on time. Most people have an easier time parting with things when they’re moving into their new place, as they don’t feel as sentimental when there aren’t as many memories associated with the new house.
LISTEN TO UPBEAT MUSIC WHILE WORKING This energizes everyone and keeps the fun factor high.
PACK AN OVERNIGHT BAG Whether you are moving across the country or just across town, you would be wise to pack 3 changes of clothes, and all of your most basic toiletries, so you’re not searching for your deodorant and toothbrush the day you move in. Your friends and family will thank you.

Over the years, we have had several times when people pack things away that should stay with the house, items like the garage door openers, extra keys, the appliance manuals or the house survey. Find a spot in the house where these items are being gathered so that you aren’t left with the task of searching frantically for them at the last minute. Stress is inevitable when you’re moving – afterall, it does show up in the top five most stressful life events. But, I hope that I have helped you to realize that you really can do some things to make the whole process more manageable with some good planning.
Celebrate the Season in Style with an Expertly Designed Kitchen KEEP YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER PRIOR TO THE MOVE
As you’re packing up from the home you’re moving out of, keep as much order as possible by clearing out the garage or a specific room in the house for packed boxes. Rather than having boxes in every room, having one place where they can all be stacked gives you a greater sense of order and helps you to keep a clear mind as you go through the process. This would also really help your friends or movers on moving day.
DON’T FORGET TO LABEL THINGS WELL
This should include which room it should go to in the new house, and you could do this by colour-coding the boxes or simply writing Kitchen, Bathroom, Living Room, etc. You could also number each box for each room and make a list of very important items that you can’t be without for too long. This way you don’t have to wonder where the more time sensitive items are located.
MAKE SURE TO REWARD YOURSELF
Set a goal of packing a certain number of boxes each day, and when you’ve met your goal, have a nice treat, watch your favourite show, or make a phone call to a friend you love to chat with. But, hold yourself accountable and no rewards until you’ve met your goal for the day.
