Spring sure took its sweet time revealing the promising signs of rebirth and renewal this year. Just the other day, I saw a few brilliant green shoots make their appearance.

While I anticipate the feeling of a new season and sunnier skies around the corner, I write this Editor’s Note with sadness. This issue is dedicated to PattiAnne Fitzpatrick Daley, our HOMES+ Distribution Manager. Patti-Anne passed away unexpectedly during the production of this issue.

I met Patti-Anne in November 2019 when I was offered the position of Editor at HOMES+. Patti was such a breath of fresh air when she entered the office for a quick chat and a coffee. She readily shared her life, her love of golf, and funny moments that happened during the week with us. She always had us laughing with her good nature and quick wit.

More often than not, Patti-Anne could be found in the garage fixing or painting magazine racks or preparing the magazines for a first or second delivery. Our distribution locations adored her, as she was always readily available for a quick chat.

Patti-Anne was always first to applaud the team’s effort and offered feedback about the articles and advertisers every issue. She was the epitome of a team player.

The word synchronicity comes to mind when I look back at Patti-Anne coming into my life. You see,

Patti-Anne shares the exact name as my Mother, who I’m currently caring for as she succumbs to throat cancer. Patricia Anne Fitzpatrick. The only difference is that my Mom doesn’t have an E at the end of Anne.

Just a few weeks ago, Patti-Anne was at the office a little longer than normal. Out of the blue, I looked at her and informed her that when I saw that she shared the same name as my Mother, back in 2019, I believed that it was a sign that I finally I found my work home. I believe that now more than ever.

For those that had the honour of knowing PattiAnne, I invite you to send us messages on how she touched your life, as she did to ours.

I’d also like to thank Brad, Alissa, Lauren, Kelsey, and my dear friend and colleague Jackie for putting your best foot forward in creating in this issue in my absence and during this very hard reality we face as a team.

To our readers, embrace the moments that this Spring offers to you. Hug your loved ones. Perform an act of kindness to your neighbour who you’ll be seeing a lot more of in the coming months... Most importantly, live life to the fullest.

I conclude my note by raising a glass to Patti-Anne Fitzpatrick Daley. I can only hope that she is smiling that lovely smile and raising her glass to all that loved her as well. We love you and your presence will be dearly missed.

Miso is a fermented paste that adds a salty umami flavour to many Japanese dishes. Most miso is made in Japan, where the ingredient has been used since the eighth century or earlier. This fabulous recipe is from my Mom Roz, who adapted it from a cooking magazine. I honestly can’t get enough of it and it’s now on a regular rotation at my house. It’s delightfully salty, creamy and sweet. Serve the lamb with mashed potatoes or mashed cauliflower and a green veg.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 ½ Tbsp butter, softened

• ¼ c white miso paste

• ¾ Tbsp fresh ginger, minced

• ¾ Tbsp fresh garlic, minced

• ¾ Tbsp rice vinegar

• 1 ½ Tbsp honey

• 1 Frenched Rack of Lamb

• 1 Tsp freshly ground black pepper

• 2 green onions, finely sliced

• 1 Tbsp sesame seeds, toasted

METHOD:

• Preheat oven to 375.

• In a medium bowl, combine butter, miso, ginger, garlic, rice vinegar and honey. Stir together to make a paste.

• Using your hands, massage paste onto rack of lamb and place rack skin side up in an ovenproof dish. Sprinkle with black pepper and roast for 30-35 minutes or until lamb reaches an internal temperature of 120 F (medium rare) or 125 F (medium).

• Remove from oven, cover with foil and rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Top with green onions and sesame seeds and serve.

• Makes 2-3 servings.

A Weekend IN Stratford

Living in the Waterloo Region provides residents with many amazing opportunities for a weekend getaway or staycation.

THE CHOCOLATE AND BACON & ALE TRAIL

One of the most popular attractions in Stratford is the Chocolate Trail, a self-guided tour of the city’s best chocolatiers. In addition, the city also boasts a Bacon & Ale Trail, which features some of the best breweries in the region.

The Chocolate Trail is a must-see for anyone with a sweet tooth. This self-guided tour takes visitors on a journey through the city’s best chocolatiers, allowing them to sample a wide variety of chocolates, truffles, and other confections. The trail includes stops at popular chocolate shops such as Rheo Thompson Candies, Chocolate Barr’s, and Rocky Mtn Chocolate. Each shop has its own unique offerings, so visitors can expect to find everything from classic milk chocolate bars to artisanal truffles made with local ingredients.

Last month, the day after a major snowstorm, we had the opportunity to visit Stratford, Ontario and take advantage of learning more about this infamous little town only 45 minutes away from KW.

Stratford is a city that is well known for its cultural events, particularly its world-renowned Stratford Festival. However, there is much more to this charming city than just theatre.

Stratford is also home to a number of museums, including the Stratford Perth Museum, and Foster’s Inn, a historic hotel that has been operating for over a century.

One of my favourite stops was Olive Your Favourites, located in the heart of downtown Stratford, where we were educated about olive oil and was gifted a Dark Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar.

The Bacon & Ale Trail is another popular attraction in Stratford. This self-guided tour takes visitors on a journey through the city’s best breweries, allowing them to sample a wide variety of craft beers. The trail includes stops at popular breweries such as Black Swan Brewing

Company, Jobsite Brewing Company, and Shakespeare Brewing Company. Each brewery has its own unique offerings, so visitors can expect to find everything from classic lagers to hoppy IPAs.

The cost is $35+HST per trail. It’s a fantastic way to learn about the town and get to know the local businesses.

STRATFORD PERTH MUSEUM

In addition to its food and drink trails, Stratford is also home to a number of museums. The Stratford Perth Museum is a popular attraction for history buffs, offering exhibits on everything from the region’s early settlers to its famous residents, including Justin Bieber. The museum is housed in a historic building that dates back to 1840, and features a number of artifacts and exhibits that bring the region’s history to life.

The Bluebird Restaurant & Bar is a quaint, yet very busy, restaurant with curated dishes that combine seasonality and Stratford’s unique agricultural landscape. During our evening, we feasted on Beef cheeks and cod, while looking at the Avon River outside.

Foster’s Inn is another must-see attraction in Stratford. We stayed in one of their 9 guest rooms and had the opportunity to enjoy drinks at the restaurant and bar, which serves up delicious farm-to-table cuisine and a wide variety of local beers and wines. This historic hotel has been operating since 1906, and has welcomed guests from all over the world. The guest rooms are each decorated in a unique style that reflects the hotel’s history and charm.

For breakfast, we took ourselves to church and indulged on chicken waffles and eggs Benedict at the Revival House. Housed in the historic building formerly known as The Church Restaurant, Revival House is a jewel in Stratford’s architectural crown.

How to Throw a Memorable Backyard Barbecue with Sebastien & Sheila Centner

As the weather warms up and the days become longer, nothing brings friends and family together quite like a backyard barbecue to signal the start of the summer season.

There is nothing we love more than firing up the grill and inviting friends to join us in the late afternoon so we can enjoy the “golden hour” together.

We recommend keeping to a smaller group of six to eight people for a backyard barbecue, but we suspect it may not be uncommon to have a few last-minute guests bump those numbers up. With our barbecues, we always start planning for a certain number, and invariably Seb gets excited and extends the invite to another couple or two! For this reason, we love to serve a variety of dishes “familystyle,” and prepare a bit of extra food – since with family platters, leftover portions can easily be salvaged for the next day.

We often say entertaining as a couple is a bit like a dance: balancing the prep work and day-of tasks between each other. Backyard barbecues are a perfect opportunity to split up entertaining duties, with one person tending to the grill and the other taking care of the guests and handling any lastminute details.

DECOR

Backyard barbecues are well suited to simple décor, and for this reason we often go with the “less is more” principle and lean towards a rustic outdoor look – no fancy tablecloth needed here! If your backyard permits and you have the right space for it, consider moving your table directly onto the grass, to change things up a bit and give your tablescape a gorgeous natural backdrop.

Since you are already surrounded by the outdoors, colourful florals will tie together the table and the garden with pops of colour. By arranging the florals in large mason jars, you can easily shift them slightly to make room for the larger familystyle platters when they arrive at the table.

If you don’t have a rustic wooden table, you can also use rattan charger plates as the foundation of your place setting. These are an inexpensive way to add some natural texture to your table and can be reused often.

It’s always nice to finish things off with little details as we’ve done with the gingham napkins here. Another of our favourite ideas is to tie colourful ribbons around your vases or mason jars.

FOOD

We always begin the afternoon or early evening with a cocktail as guests arrive, but unlike other parties of ours, we skip serving canapés or snacks (since family-style meals with lots of variety can be a lot of food), and we move directly into dinner.

Serving family-style makes a lot of sense for a barbecue menu, since plating individual portions at a grill can be challenging and platters are generally quicker to plate. Also, this way your food will arrive at the table faster… and warmer!

A barbecue menu typically features a pretty heavy protein or main course, so we balance this by serving light and fresh appetizers like our Tomato and Basil Salad dotted with buffalo mozzarella, or the more unique Grilled Peaches and Baguette with fresh Burrata. Both make for a colourful (and perhaps unexpected) start to the meal!

For the main courses, we recommend offering lots of variety, with mixed platters of chicken, steak, and sausage complemented by healthy side dishes like grilled portobello mushroom caps with Chèvre cheese and simply grilled asparagus. All these sides can be cooked on the grill, but if you find you're getting short on space, they can also be cooked in the oven or on the range in the kitchen.

DRINKS

A Paloma is a tequila-based cocktail that features grapefruit juice, fresh lime and sparkling water or Sprite, finished with a pink grapefruit slice. Refreshing and delicious, this cocktail is a go-to for us when entertaining because the non-alcoholic version tastes just as good as the original.

Brodie Murdoch, a Waterloo native, relocated back to her hometown during the pandemic, trading in her downtown Toronto loft for a Victorian home with a bonus building brimming with history and charm.

Products in the late 60s and Kazan Trading Company in the 70s and 80s. The shop was later converted into a living space with a one-wall kitchen and gas fireplace. The house is across the street from Sacred Heart Church, a historic building built in 1916 in the Romanesque revival style. Down the road is Mount Hope Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in the city. These historic neighborhood landmarks are juxtaposed by Google headquarters, creating a unique balance between the past and the present.

THE DECOR:

When Brodie Murdoch first laid eyes on the historic property, she immediately saw the potential in the space. She loved the character of the wood floors, the way the windows flooded the room with light, and the unique storefront exterior. When it came to design, Murdoch wanted guests to feel a sense of relaxation when they entered the space - a quiet simplicity. She chose a clean, natural palette with a touch of whimsy to create a sense of well-being and enjoyment. The original color palette was quite dark, so Murdoch immediately painted everything white, including the floors. She updated the window coverings, replaced the outdated light fixtures with statement lighting, and added window boxes to enhance curb appeal. For visual interest, she hung oversized artwork and bold accent wallpaper to add a little eye candy to the all-white interior. All decor updates were cosmetic and budget-friendly. “It is incredible how much fresh paint and new light fixtures can transform a space. I saw a return on investment almost immediately.”

THE GUESTS:

The Airbnb has had a wide array of guests ranging from parents of students visiting from as far away as India, Germany, and Denmark, to guests traveling for work at local tech companies, hospitals, and universities. A few photographers have repurposed the space for photoshoots, local residents book the suite during their home renovations, and newcomers come to stay while house hunting. However, the majority of guests are couples from Toronto and surrounding cities, celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or even their wedding night!
