At a barbecue, where grilled meats take the centre stage, Caesar salad offers a refreshing contrast. It’s crisp lettuce, cool dressing and tangy flavours provide a respite from the rich and hearty flavours of barbecued meats. Here is the “no-egg” recipe for our Caesar salad dressing that was on the food shop menu at Dana Shortt Gourmet for close to 10 years. This recipe makes a big batch but the recipe can easily be halved. It lasts for at least 2 weeks in the fridge. In addition to salads, try using it as a dip for raw vegetables, a gourmet sandwich spread, or if you love aioli with your French fries, try this instead!
INGREDIENTS:
1 ½ cups mayonnaise (not low fat!)
1 tablespoon anchovy paste
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
• 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
• 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1 cup good quality, extra virgin olive oil
• ½ cup Asiago cheese, grated (or substitute parmesan cheese)
METHOD:
In a food processor, blitz the garlic pieces until they are very fine. Add the mayonnaise, anchovy paste, vinegar, lemon juice, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. With the motor running, VERY SLOWLY add the olive oil until thickened. Fold in the asiago or parmesan cheese.

After months of being indoors, Spring reminds us how much we need a clutter-free space that is calming and grounding. Taking center stage and sitting at the top of Desta Ostapyk’s list of Spring home trends, are spaces inspired by nature.
As we start to consider refreshing our homes, looking for ways to make our spaces more serene and soothing, incorporating natural elements
helps us connect with nature. Starting with colours, earth tones have been making a strong comeback for the past couple of years. One of the key colours of this trend is green in every shade.
Did you know that the colour green has the most variation of tones than any other colour? If you didn’t, now you do.
Other key colours for the next year are earth tones like
cognac, tobacco, mustard, charcoal, warm/creamy whites, deep marine blue etc.
Using colours like the ones mentioned above and bringing natural elements through décor, fabrics and furniture is key. Desta feels “a home should always have hints of nature and natural elements. As a designer, I’m excited that colour is finally making a comeback.”

Use natural fabrics throughout your home like 100% wool rugs (which help purify the air) natural fabric cushions, curtains & table linens. Bedding especially should be 100% cotton which allows your skin to breathe (helps you to sleep better) and should be machine washable/easy to maintain.

We are planning to build an addition to our current house. Even though the cost is more than we expected, we love our house and plan to be here for a long time. What do you advise us to do?
There is no one answer to this question. In my opinion, it comes down to the location of the house. If an addition makes your house the most expensive house on the street or in the neighborhood, then you may want to consider it since you might not get a return on your investment when you try to sell it. But, we all paid for items that we loved without thinking or paying attention to what is the return in value (I have a few on my list that I am guilty of). So if you do the addition just because you love where you are and are not concerned about getting back what you invested, do it and enjoy. I always recommend before any major renovation to talk to your Realtor. Their opinion can save you money and get you a better return since they know what adds more value to your house when it comes to home renovation and additions.
