Unearthing Inspiration and Unleashing Creativity As a contemporary artist, I’ve always been drawn to the fusion of past artists works and the idea of modern art innovation. This piece embodies that very essence. My journey with it began by organically blending geometrical forms, serving as a testament to the beautiful interplay between nature and human-made constructs. Using a very large canvas set the stage for something impactful. On it, I navigated the intricacies of negative space and reveled in the allure of symmetrical balance. Every shape, every shade, was thoughtfully chosen and placed for maximum impact. The colours weren’t just random selections; they were inspired by the earthy tones we find in our environment and those rare, almost mystical shades that aren’t often seen. While the initial phases of the work bore echoes of the Colour Field and Minimalistic movements of the 1970s — reminiscent of trailblazers like Thomas Nozkowski and Frank Stella — it was clear that my contemporary spirit sought more. After showcasing this painting in various settings, it was undeniable: the canvas whispered for a touch that was uniquely mine, an infusion of my vibrant essence. Heeding this call, I welcomed the piece back into the embrace of my studio. Here, I let my instincts lead the way, allowing colours and forms to dictate the next steps. Each brushstroke, infused with passion, added depth, vitality, and intensity to the evolving piece. The culmination of this journey is an oil painting that isn’t just art—it’s a part of me. Vibrant and emotive, it stands as a testament to the journey of a contemporary artist, bridging the past and the present in a visual celebration. It now is truly my own work letting go of the constraints of imitation and letting loose my own creative journey.

COZY UP THIS Holiday Season! Holiday Trees

by Jo Alcorn I’ve noticed that people are decorating early this year and I’m no exception! As soon as November 1st hit, I started craving Christmas cheer. This year, I kept my holiday décor simple with ideas inspired by Scandinavian design. Here are my tips for creating a cozy Christmas.

Green Christmas The holidays are iconic for having some of the most beautiful greeneries of the year. Cue the fresh scent of pine and luscious magnolia. This holiday I incorporated lots of greenery – displaying it on our table scape, along our banister, and throughout the different vignettes.

These beautiful window wreaths were designed with metallic ornaments, live greens, and natural textures. I also used trimmings of garland to decorate my candle holders and vases for added holiday flare.

One of the best childhood memories I have is growing up with a Christmas tree in every room. For our main tree, I needed a slim profile as I don’t have much floor space to give up. It was also important for me to have a tree that looks natural. On the tree, you can see that I used shiny metallic ornaments and contrasted them with natural textiles such as burlap and wood accents, which fits perfectly with my Scandinavian theme. I finished the look off with magnolia leaves.


Table Scape

On the dining table I used peel and stick wallpaper as a playful take on a table runner. By adding texture through natural elements such as pinecones and wood, it really feels like I’ve brought the outdoors inside. I love a stunning holiday table and how it makes eating together a more joyful and memorable experience. Why not make every meal special this year!

Fun and Games

Since we’ll all be cozied up at home this holiday season, I wanted to create “fun zones”. Why not consider bringing back a good old-fashioned game night with the family? It’s a great way to connect and be present with those you love. Another fun idea is hosting a movie night! I set up a popcorn maker, cute hockey-themed glasses, and all the fixings – making another night at home feel more exciting. It’s all about the special moments these days, and I can’t wait for each and every one of them this holiday season!

CHARCOAL-GRILLED STEAK IN REVERSE ON BRUSCHETTA NAAN (Reverse-Seared and Basted Charcoal Grilled Steak on Bruschetta-topped Toasted Naan)

SERVES 4 Prep Time: 15 minutes Grill/Oven Time: 28 Minutes Total Time: 43 Minutes Difficulty: Intermediate INGREDIENTS The 'reverse' in this recipe refers to the sear and marinade, both done after grilling the steak, which is unconventional. Serve these flatbreads as a main course with a side salad or as appetizers by cutting each naan into 4 slices. Note that the recipe was

tested on The Big Green Egg grill, but it can be adapted to most charcoal grills with similar features. Always consult your grill's user manual for lighting, heating, and cooking instructions. For a gas grill, follow the alternate method below.

GRILLING INSTRUCTIONS

Prepare the Grill: Load the kamadostyle grill's fire bowl with a 2-inch layer of natural lump charcoal. Light it using a paper towel in the coals or a charcoal-safe fire starter. Place a diffuser plate in the fire bowl and add a foil drip pan with water and herb sprigs (optional) on the plate. Set the grill grate over the diffuser plate. Close the lid and preheat to 250°F (121°C), adjusting vents for temperature control.

Season and Cook the Steak: Pat the steak dry, pierce it with a fork, and season with salt. Place the steak on the preheated grill, insert a programmable thermometer, and cook for about 22 minutes until the thermometer reads 135°F (57°C).

Prepare Reverse Marinade: In a shallow dish, combine onion, garlic, oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper to taste. Set aside.

Sear the Steak: Remove the partiallycooked steak and lower the grill grate closer to the charcoal for high-heat grilling. Brush the grate clean and heat to about 600°F (315°C) for 2 to 5 minutes.

Return steak to grill, sear for 1-2 minutes per side, or until thermometer registers 145°F (63°C) for medium-rare. Remove the steak and place it in the Reverse Marinade for 10-12 minutes.

Prepare Bruschetta: Combine tomato, onion, garlic, basil, oil, and vinegar in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper.

Carve and Marinate: Slice the steak thinly across the grain and return it to the marinade. Set aside.

Assemble: Grill naan until lightly toasted, spread with ricotta, top with Bruschetta, and arrange steak slices. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and cut each naan in half to serve. Tips: Using a drip pan with water under the steak adds moisture and flavor to the grilling process.
