As we continue to manoeuvre through our new normal – the result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic – entering our homes has now become a process for so many of us. Hand sanitizer, face masks, gloves, shoes. Are you thinking about the entryway into your home any differently?
Having a space when you enter and exit your home, to transition into and from the outdoors, can provide the ideal drop zone – think masks, shoes, backpacks, or a place to keep that pump bottle of sanitizer. Don't have a designated mudroom? No problem! You don't need an actual mudroom to create a more organized and practical space. A shelf with a basket or two and a place for your bottle of hand sanitizer, a couple of hooks on the wall, and a small bench, so you can sit down and take your shoes off, will do the trick.
Let's Talk Function
Storage is king in a mudroom space: • Hooks for a purse, reusable shopping bags, an umbrella or your keys. Hang some hooks at a kid-friendly height to make it easy for them to hang up their own things. • A mat and/or boot tray to place your shoes (for a busy house, the bigger the mat the better for accommodating everyone as they come and go). • A "dropping zone" is always great in a mudroom, whether it be a bowl or basket, this is a great place to store miscellaneous items that you need to keep handy as you enter and exit the house. If space allows, add a console table or cabinet for additional storage (hint: a cabinet is a great place to stow a handy garbage can for disposing of used PPE). • Add bins or baskets to create personalized storage for each family member. And don't forget your furry friend - you can keep his/her leash hung up and toys in a basket as well!
Let's Talk Seating
No mudroom space is complete without a bench or some sort of seating for removing your shoes after a long day. Select something that fits the space well, from an extra dining chair to a full-size bench, you want to be sure to select something that will not impede the overall flow or block doorways. For some additional storage (especially in the colder months) consider a bench with a flip-up seat or built-in shelves for shoes and baskets.

Durable tiles or luxury vinyl are a couple of examples of very practical flooring choices for this space as they can handle the high traffic, dirt, mud, and potential moisture (think rainwater or snow) easily with a quick sweep or mop. Add a durable floor mat to help trap dirt as it comes through the door for a practically indestructible floor that can withstand whatever your family throws at it.

Just because your mudroom space is practical and durable doesn't mean that it can't do double-duty and also be an attractive part of your home! Keeping the design style consistent with the rest of your home creates both continuity and flow. Personalize with a few photographs or a piece of art and add a splash of colour through some plants or other décor to make your mudroom feel a bit more inviting. Our Activa Sales Representative will review your must-haves list with you and see what’s available to suit your new home needs. When you meet with our Sales Representatives be sure to bring the following to make the process as seamless as possible:
Our team will help you select a lot for your new dream home and will walk you through our home design options. If your must-have list includes a finished basement or an extra bedroom – now is your chance! When you pick your home design you will notice many of our floorplans include optional structural changes such as extra bedrooms, a finished basement, an upper-level laundry room, home office space and more. Many of our home designs also offer different elevations to choose from, so you can pick a style that reflects your unique taste.

Purchasing agreement Once your floor plan, structural options and lot are selected, our Sales Representatives will review your Agreement of Purchase and Sale (APS) with you. This is a legally binding document that outlines the terms and conditions of your purchase. Once you’ve signed this and waived any conditions, your offer will become firm and the fun of interior options selections can begin!
Pre-Construction Our experienced in-house drafting department will complete a set of working drawings for your new home which are used to apply for a building permit. As a courtesy, we offer our clients a review of these drawings (applies to a single-detached product only). Once you’re firm, you’ll also receive an email from your Customer Experience Coordinator who will be by your side for the rest of your home buying journey.

Many of us relate the expenses surrounding the season to gifts and the cost of hosting, but it is easy to forget how expensive all the decorations can be. Over time, the collection of decor grows, picking up small things as we shop or receiving items as a gift.

Have you thought of making planned, intentional décor investments? Being intentional with investing in key holiday décor items can not only save you money long term, but it can help them naturally coordinate. Each holiday season, I try to invest in one new staple item. Depending on the item, I will do this either early in the holiday season or wait for Boxing Day sales.
Here are a few staple holiday décor pieces worth investing in...
A Christmas Tree If you decide to invest in a tree, it will very much depend on if you are on team “Real” or “Artificial” tree! The smell and traditions a real tree offer are irreplaceable, but if you are considering an artificial tree, investing in a good quality product is definitely worth it. A higher quality tree will appear fuller, with natural needles and a more realistic, slightly imperfect shape.
Front Exterior From wreaths to urns to lights, it can be hard to know what to focus on for the exterior of your home. Since exterior décor needs to withstand the natural elements, they often come with a higher price tag. My personal approach, and what I recommend to clients, is start with the foundational items, urn bases/pots and lights, as those will be the most expensive items. Urn fillers, wreaths and additional decorative pieces are less costly and can be easily changed as trends change or evolve.
Table Hosting for the holiday season can be both rewarding and equally, exhausting! Having a beautifully curated table setting and décor can be a source of pride for a host, and one of the reasons I recommend investing in this area. The dining table is another area of the holidays that will typically have a longer lifespan than other decorations and, outside of a pandemic, is exposed to higher use than other items. Quality table settings, stemware and centerpieces are worth investing in!
Staircase Stockings Often appearing on a fireplace mantel in a traditional holiday scene, it is not uncommon to have the same stockings for many years. I recommend investing in good quality stockings from the start! Whether you are welcoming a new member to the family or starting fresh for the whole family, it is a great opportunity to add a festive item that is sure to hold long standing memories.

A good quality garland that is full with volume can make or break your efforts in this area, as less expensive garland can be thin, with spars sections. An investment in a quality garland can have a big impact in the space with little effort in the future, as you can simply attach and let the décor speak for itself!
