Sutton’s Going on... in Simcoe County
BILL KINDOU BROKER OF RECORD
Top 100 Employer speaks out on Simcoe county Real Estate
SUTTON GROUP INCENTIVE REALTY INC., BROKERAGE
More and more clients are turning to the expertise and market knowledge of Sutton’s professional agents and leaving with a smile and a good review. Bill Kindou, Broker of Record at Sutton Group Incentive Barrie, purchased the business in 2002 from Don Jerry, who had owned it previously since 1993. In the past 16 years since taking ownership, Bill has seen tremendous development and been able to grow the staff from 40 agents at time of purchase to over 200 including staff. With ten branch offices including the Barrie main office, Barrie Branch office, Orillia, Alliston, Innisfil and Collingwood offices, as well as Angus, Port Carling and Gravenhurst, Sutton Group Incentive is situated right where clients require, and it’s ready to get down to business, whether that be anything from leasing property to selling your home or a piece of land. “We handle residential, commercial, farms, vacant lands and leases,” Bill explained, noting agents are ready and enthusiastic to work with clients to achieve positive outcomes on a variety of transactions. “For any real estate needs just call one of our offices.” With a balanced and fair-minded business approach, Bill has been able to create an environment where clients and sales representatives alike thrive and

grow. Sutton provides a superb compensation package for agents and also ensures they always have top-notch computers and the most modern technology to do their job at peak efficiency and with all the latest tools. Bill also conducts weekly in-house training for agents, keeping them on top of market trends, changing regulations, and every other aspect of the real estate business. By fostering training and leadership programs for staff, giving constant attention to encouraging excellent business relationships and upholding a business model built around a cost-controlled, creative approach, Sutton continues to be able to offer the outstanding service and results for which it is known. As it continually adapts to the latest market developments Sutton stands at the apex of industry, technology and marketing moving forward. Sutton’s excellent treatment of its agents extends to its clients as well, as it proves to be the perfect fit for an increasing number of families and individuals looking to buy, sell or lease. Sutton Group also prides itself on giving back to the community, and donates to charities including Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Care Centre (RVH), The Barrie Women and Children’s Crisis Centre, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie, Media For Young Minds and other worthy causes throughout Simcoe County. Sutton is 100 percent
Canadian-owned and was founded in Vancouver in 1983. It offered a groundbreaking new real estate concept and soon gained momentum and growth, expanding throughout the country. After its steady growth since founding, Sutton now has a total of around 200 offices across Canada and over 8,000 sales representatives. Sutton’s core philosophy and business model puts the realtor and client, rather than the real estate agency, at the centre of every transaction, giving priority to an optimal customer-sales representative relationship and smooth, rewarding transaction. Selling a home can be a challenging task, but with the confidence, professionalism and market knowledge of a Sutton sales representative it becomes that much easier. Choosing Sutton is a big step in the right direction towards a successful, rewarding real estate transaction, and Bill is hoping for even more expansion in the future. “We look forward to continued growth in our company,” Bill said. “We also thank all of our clients who’ve supported our business over the years.” IT IS OUR FOCUS TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE SATISFIED …TODAY…TOMORROW… AND IN THE FUTURE. *SUTTON GROUP SERVICES: WE KNOW HOW TO MOVE YOU – IT’S OUR BUSINESS

C BIA helps organize annual events such as Promenade Days, but it also advocates for downtown businesses
Metroland file photo
Stevens shaping downtown core raig Stevens has dedicated his career to improving the downtown core. The managing director of the Downtown Barrie BIA has worked for the organization for the last 12 years. “The role of a business improvement area really goes beyond the commercial properties and the ripple effect goes into the community,” he said. “If your downtown is healthy and vibrant and strong, the rest of the city is, as well.” The BIA helps organize annual events such as Promenade Days. It also advocates for downtown businesses and helps guide city policy related to the core. Specifically, the BIA has played an important role in pushing for Dunlop Street improvements and the redevelopment of the Barrie Transit Terminal into a year-round marketplace. “Having grown up in Barrie and having been part of two businesses here, you hear about the potential (for the downtown),” Stevens said. “We’re realizing that potential. Other people are making those investments to do
that, and it’s really exciting.” It also recently received the esteemed award for Large Scale Public Realm Investment and Streetscape for the Meridian Place and Memorial Square development, hosted an innovative blockHACK hackathon using Blockchain coding technology, and raised $700 for Barrie Out of the Cold through the annual Hot Cocoa Trail. And the BIA’s annual May Days promotion is part of a series of Community Connects events that raise money for local charities. “We still have big events, but we’re able to go another layer,” Stevens said. He wants to see several downtown projects come to fruition, including the reconstruction of the W.A. Fisher auditorium, a hotel near the Dunlop and Mulcaster streets intersection, and several proposed highrise buildings. For more information on the BIA, or upcoming events in the downtown core, visit downtownbarrie.ca.

rica Curtis’s passion for volunteering had to take a back seat for a few months after she had a kidney stone removed in February. But the 74-year-old promised she would soon be back volunteering at Hospice Simcoe, where she helps patients who are in the last phase of their lives. After all, Curtis is a volunteering dynamo, having won the Spirit Catcher Award last November for her commitment to community. “I was just thrilled to have won that award,” she said. “It was quite the celebration for me with family and friends.” Curtis isn’t about to let her recent health issue keep her from volunteering. She is no stranger to battling what is thrown her way. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease nearly a decade ago, she continued to raise funds by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and participating in the annual Parkinson SuperWalk. Her Parkinson’s symptoms have receded — especially the tremors associated with the

disease — since she underwent deep brain stimulation more than a year ago. “It’s really quite amazing,” she said. “I used to have to take 11 levodopa pills a day, now I only take 1 ½.” Curtis said her volunteer work, especially at Hospice Simcoe, “always feels terrific.” “You are getting a lot of payback,” she said. “It’s one of those things in my life, where I know I’ve done something worthwhile.” Curtis also helped the Burton Avenue United Church sponsorship group bring two Syrian families to the area. “We have money and a place to live; we have friends,” she said. “The people coming here from (Syria) have nothing. It’s our responsibility to look after them. I really believe that. It’s not hard to take things on when you know it’s a good cause.” The Order of the Spirit Catcher was established in 2000. It is the highest honour bestowed by the city on a volunteer.

ONE-STOP FAMILY FRIENDLY SERVICES While kids happily watch videos and use iPads in the play area, their parents are nearby quietly reading, checking emails or getting coffee from the beverage centre. Friendly staff members are warmly welcoming new arrivals and showing patients to our comfortable treatment
rooms. At White Cedar Dental Care in Barrie, dentists Dr. Zina Baraz and her husband Dr. Bashar Bashi wouldn’t have it any other way. “Our goal is to make sure patients are happy and have a great experience,” says Dr. Baraz, who has practiced dentistry since 2001. “We always invite new patients to come and have a tour of the office and a free consultation with two x-rays before making any commitment. We want people to feel comfortable so they can make an informed decision after seeing the office, feeling the atmosphere and meeting the dentist who will take care of them.” Over the past year, White Cedar Dental Care has added even more patient services to their wide range of family and cosmetic dental treatments. Skilled professionals deliver all services using the newest dental equipment and technology. New to the office is Cerec, a machine that creates a crown that can be made and put on the patient’s tooth during a single visit. “With Cerec, we eliminate taking an
BAR Our City 0524 V1.indd 14
impression of the tooth and only need one appointment,” explains Dr. Baraz. “The patient doesn’t have to live with a temporary crown. We prepare the tooth, take an individual digital picture of it, send it to the machine and the machine mills the crown. Then, we try it on in the patient’s mouth. We can forward the pictures to a lab if necessary. It’s a great service and our patients, especially the ones who have high gag reflex, really enjoy it.” Another new service appreciated by patients, and not available at many dental offices, is treatment under general anaesthesia. Since joining our team in July 2017, anaesthetist Dr. Lu has provided this sedation service for wisdom teeth removal as well as for treatments for children, kids with special needs, and people who suffer from anxiety. With years of experience, Dr. Lu is certified in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and paediatric advanced life support (PALS). “Dr. Lu is very kind and explains the steps that will be done,” says Dr. Baraz.

“This service lets patients have treatments in the office where the surroundings are warm and familiar rather than at a hospital. Parents can bring their children into the treatment room which makes it is easier for everyone.” Patients at White Cedar Dental Care can also choose to have treatments under conscious sedation such as intravenous sedation and laughing gas (nitrous oxide). Dr. Baraz will recommend a level of sedation to a patient based on their needs or according to parents’ wishes. After having laughing gas sedation, the patient can drive, go back to work or look after their children right after the appointment. “I offer laughing gas as an option because it is very safe,” Dr. Baraz says. “I use it myself and so do my kids. It is a good option for older children, but general anaesthetic works well for children who are very young.” A new technology making x-rays more comfortable for children, adults with small mouths, and those with a strong gag reflex is a machine that takes digital x-rays while circling around the patient’s head. This eliminates the need for a bulky sensor in the patient’s mouth. The technology also has less radiation and easily detects cavities between young children’s teeth. “Before, we couldn’t x-ray or visually see these cavities in children’s teeth until their mouths were big enough for the sensor,” says Dr. Baraz. “The cavities could get bigger and damage the tooth’s structure. Having this technology helps us diagnose children’s cavities at a much younger age.” Orthodontist Dr. Mir offers patients a choice of metal braces, clear brackets and the Invisalign system of teeth straightening. Patients can also get whiter teeth at the office for $99. Light activated whitening gel only takes an hour to create a whiter smile. Because many families refer other families to her office, parents often ask Dr. Baraz what treatment plan she would use for their children if they were her own. She always recommends a plan that is as simple as possible and includes only what is absolutely necessary. This makes treatment as easy as possible for the child. “Informing the parents, or an adult patient, about the options in the treatment plan is key,” explains Dr. Baraz. “Knowing there are options puts everyone at ease. We are blessed and honoured when a family refers another family or a patient refers a patient. We want to be sure we are taking care of every single person who walks into the office. Putting the patient first, doing the best for them and making them feel like family is our goal.”

Telling Barrie’s stories by the Bay Iain Moggach

hat sealed the deal for Iain Moggach, executive director of Theatre By The Bay, to stay in Barrie rather than build a career in the metropolitan indie theatre scene in Toronto was the North Shore Trail. Moggach was leading a daily walking tour along the shoreline trail every day in the spring. “When you spend every day there as the flowers are blooming, it’s not hard to fall in love with it,” Moggach said. Originally from Ottawa, Moggach, 27, finished up his theatre degree at George Brown and moved to Barrie for a co-op opportunity at Theatre By The Bay. The Indie Producers Co-Op brings two graduates of George Brown to the city to learn how to produce their own work. Months later, Moggach was asked to run the theatre company. “That’s pretty unique,” Moggach said. Theatre By The Bay primarily produces work that’s focused on the surrounding community.
“We tell local stories and develop original ideas,” Moggach said. “It ties in with Barrie’s very strong identity. It’s a very proud city.” Last year, Theatre By The Bay produced We Must Have More Men, an original story written by Danielle Joy Kostrich and Alex Dault about The First World War. The story shared the personal accounts of soldiers from Barrie and Simcoe County. The theatre company was a finalist for not-forprofit organization of the year from the Barrie Business Awards in the same year alongside Hospice Simcoe and Gilda’s Club. “To be among such prestigious groups says something about our programming,” said Moggach. This summer, the theatre is producing Northern Lights, a farce inspired by true events surrounding Barrie’s Molson Brewery grow operation. “We’ve been very fortunate,” Moggach said. “We’ve surprised a lot of people with what we can do, and I hope we continue to surprise.”

Results Focused Treatment from head to toe by highly qualified Physiotherapists. Mandi Hayes, owner of Resolution Physiotherapy & IMS Clinic, knows her team of highly experienced and postgraduate trained Manual Physiotherapists makes her clinic unique. This uniqueness and the quality of treatment from Resolution’s team is reflected in their winning of the 2017 Reader’s Choice Award, as well as the 2017 and 2018 Consumer’s Choice Awards. “We hire only highly qualified, experienced Physiotherapists and are proud to have numerous Physiotherapists who have Canada’s highest Manual Physiotherapy and Sports Physiotherapy Certifications. Resolution’s love of working with athletes and active people of all ages is obvious as their walls are covered with photos of appreciative clients including Canadian National team athletes, firefighters, police officers, track stars, swimmers, wrestlers, volleyball players, basketball athletes, rugby players, dancers, and hockey players. “When I opened my clinic 8 years ago, my goal was to build a team of highly motivated and qualified physios like myself,” says Mandi. “It makes me happiest when I hear that people know of Resolution as a great clinic and have no idea who I am. I am confident that clients of all ages and ability levels can see any of our highly-qualified Physiotherapists and receive excellent care.” Resolution is always looking for ways to improve client care and uses a wide variety of advanced, research-based treatments to accelerate recovery for their clients. ay Bogart has dedicated herself to the Salvation Army for 16 years. The Barrie resident was out for a walk one day more than 15 years ago, when she noticed a sign in the window at the Salvation Army’s Bayside Mission Centre, noting the organization was seeking volunteers. She had recently retired and her husband was regularly out of the house golfing and curling. She started volunteering at the Salvation Army’s thrift store in May 2002 and has stuck with the organization ever since. “I was new to Barrie at that time,” she said, taking a break from serving pastries in the mission centre’s kitchen recently. “I only lived up the street. I saw the sign and thought this was for me. I didn’t want to sit in the house all the time.” Bogart sorted, priced and displayed housewares, clothing and bedding three days a week until the Bayfield Street location closed to be
converted into the Salvation Army’s family services ministry in September 2013. One month later, she started in the Salvation Army’s neighbouring Bayside Mission Centre kitchen. Twice a week, she peels vegetables, butters buns and serves lunches to about 100 homeless and at-risk people. And she also helps run the Salvation Army’s annual coat drive. “I have thoroughly enjoyed, and will continue to enjoy, working with staff and other volunteers, as well as serving the public,” she said. “It makes me feel like I have a purpose and that I am giving back to my community. I will continue to serve as long as I am able.” Mission centre executive director Maj. Doug Lewis said volunteers are at the core of the Salvation Army’s success. “We’re totally dependent on volunteers,” he said. “They’re the army behind the Army.”

tephen Loftus willingly lauds his ‘innovative’ staff for helping him succeed. One of the founders of Innovative Automation wholeheartedly believes that, in order to grow a business, management must be willing to train and support their employees. “The operation is successful because of the people,” he said recently. “Innovative Automation is made up of a group of very dedicated and passionate people who have helped the company grow to where it is today. Every company has a responsibility to train young people. There would be no skills shortage if every employer stepped up and did what they should — train their own.” The company was started by Loftus, James Carnegie and Paul Tyndall in 1989. It is recognized as a leading supplier of custom-tailored solutions in assembly and testing automation, robotics and welding. Mechanical teams fully assemble and develop automation systems from the first bolt forward. Electrical teams build controls and wire systems and program-
mers build control systems. Innovative has 16 registered apprentices and 45 per cent of employees are under the age of 30. Seventeen post-secondary students will work at the plant this summer. The company employs 118 full-time staff, with a goal of hitting 200 at its new Welham Road facility. It is also a supporter of the city’s annual Train in Technology expo and recently gave a $250,000 grant to Georgian College. And it received the Barrie Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Arch Brown Entrepreneur Award of Excellence. “Every company has a responsibility to the community,” he said. “(We have) always strongly supported this belief. The donation to Georgian is an investment in the future for Innovative Automation. We need to build future innovators who want to live and work in our beautiful city. What better way to do that than invest in their education at the local level?” For more on the company, visit innovativeautomation.com.

Louise Sparrow likes finding the right fit for volunteers L
ouise Sparrow has her mom to thank for getting her involved in volunteering. “My mom used to do it when we lived in the Bahamas,” Sparrow said. “She was teaching remedial reading at a local elementary school, helping kids read. I thought that’s just what moms did.” Flash forward to today, and Sparrow is community development manager with Tandempark, a startup company that helps match volunteers with placements in Simcoe County. It wasn’t until Sparrow faced a mental health crisis that she realized volunteering had a role to play in healing. “When I was in college, it was the beginning of my journey with depression. What made me happy was I’d go to the hospital,” she said. “If I could get on the kids floor, I’d be a clown or visit people.” She also started knitting and dropping donations off there too. “It made me feel good and I thought ‘why isn’t everyone volunteering?’” Later moving to Winnipeg, she started vol-
unteering for a CNIB recording studio and learned a new skill by reading into a microphone to do recordings for clients. Back in Ontario, she started working for a provincial youth program, which changed her life completely. “I found my destiny. I did it for nine years and managed the volunteer centre,” she said. Now, she encourages businesses to think about hiring youth and even families as volunteers. “I look for new and different ways to nurture the relationships, getting nonprofits to change the way they utilize volunteers.” Drawing on her past, Sparrow has seen what different cultures can do to become an inclusive community. Volunteering can also help you get to know your community better, she said. Today, Sparrow volunteers at the Midland Cultural Centre and does virtual volunteering, offering her expertise through online projects. “I love it, it’s something I can do easily.”

veryone knows that swelling and bleeding mean that something is wrong. A swollen twisted ankle or a nasty infected wound often take people to an emergency room. However not everyone realizes that red, swollen or bleeding gums should also be immediately addressed. Gingivitis, while commonplace, can be an indicator that other serious health changes can be occurring throughout the body. The swelling that is seen in gingivitis is inflammation. Inflammation is our body’s response to cellular injury. Our body swells up to try to rid the body of the initial cause of injury and to try to reduce further damage. However, the chemicals that our own body releases to stop the problem can end up being a longer term inflammatory response. Studies are showing that our full body health and our oral health are very closely linked. The inflammation we see in the mouth may also be present in the heart, liver and circulatory system. Those bleeding gums can be the first visible sign that you have other medical conditions. If you have other medical conditions, a gum infection like gingivitis or periodontal disease can just add to the stress that your body is under. Dental professionals are trained to diagnose and treat all types of oral disease. Whether it be a localized gingivitis brought
Dr. Amir Guorgui
on by pregnancy, or an advanced case of periodontal disease caused by an aggressive strain of bacteria, there are treatments and home care regimes available. The dentist and hygienist will assess the condition and then monitor the healing. Just as a doctor may prescribe statin medication, your hygienist can make recommendations to use specific preventative oral care products. The hygienist will also remove plaque and hard deposits to help your body fight the infection and reduce inflammation. The length of time between your cleaning appointments is determined based on how you are responding to the treatment.
Dr. Robert Eisen
Dr. Amir Guorgui and
Dr. Robert Eisen have been providing exceptional dental care in Barrie Smile Centre for over twenty years. Together they place a priority on gaining expertise in the latest in cosmetic dentistry and dental implant techniques. Dr. Guorgui and Dr. Eisen regularly host All-on-Four™ Dental Implant seminars where they describe the process and address any questions.
In some cases, if a person does not respond to treatment, a medical consultation may be warranted. Dental and medical professionals work together to determine your risk factors and condition. The professionals at the Barrie Smile Centre want to treat your whole body health. They will educate you about your level of inflammation and disease and advise you how to treat it. They will also work with your doctor should that be necessary. The Barrie Smile Centre wants to keep you smiling for many healthy years to come!

Crying out loud: Barrie’s town crier, Steve Travers Stephen Travers
When Stephen Travers first donned the tri-corn hat and pantaloons, people thought he might be Barrie’s resident pirate.
hen Stephen Travers first donned the tricorne hat and pantaloons, people thought he might be Barrie’s resident pirate. “Now, people know I’m the town crier,” Travers said. They ought to. He’s the town’s first and only modern town crier, and he’s cried through two sesquicentennials. The first was Barrie’s 150th anniversary in 2003, and the second was Canada’s anniversary last year. Born in Birmingham, UK, Travers, a HVAC technician, moved to Canada with his wife, a school teacher, in 1991. In 2002, Travers applied for the position of town crier. While there were other applicants, Travers said no one else showed up on the day of the decision. “I proclaimed my own letter of application,” Travers said. In a borrowed tricorne hat, a confederate coat, and 18th century-style pantaloons sewn by his wife, Travers was a shew-in. Now, Travers belongs to the Ontario Guild of Town Criers, one of 37 town criers across the province, providing proclamations for civic purposes, such as municipal events, community cries for events, charity cries for fundraising and commercial cries for business openings. A few times a year, Travers leads a walking tour through parts of the city, explaining its history and beauty. For one of the city’s hidden gems, Travers said to walk about 100 metres east from the Queen’s Hotel to take a look at the buildings on the opposite side of the street for gargoyles. He said they’re cast in the image of Neptune. On that same building, Travers said, are castiron Corinthian columns. “Some of the shops have covered them and they just look square, but if you look, some of them are magnificent,” Travers said.

Helping kids makes a difference for Marianne Arbour Marianne Arbour
Arbour believes in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization so much that she has also found time to volunteer through the years, as an in-school mentor and as a big sister.
fter 28 years working with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Barrie and District, Marianne Arbour knows there’s always one more child she can help. Arbour has a social work background and wanted to work with children and youth. “I actually started out with Big Brothers, Big Sisters in the program side of things, matching the bigs to the littles,” she said. That introduction is the best day, when the adult and the child connect and go off on their first adventure. “You’re giddy almost, and off they go for their first outing, with big, nervous smiles on their faces,” Arbour said. Arbour said her first match has become a memorable one. “That little brother, after (leaving) the program at 18, at age 28 or 29, asked his former big brother to be his best man. And to this day, they’re still in touch,” she said. There are many more stories like that. Another pair has known each other for 22 years and has a Christmas tradition of cutting down a tree together, with all extended family members involved. “It shows the longevity of what those friendships can be.” She only wishes she didn’t have a wait list of children looking for a mentor. Arbour believes in the organization so much that she has also found time to volunteer through the years, as an in-school mentor and as a big sister. After a decade as a matchmaker, Arbour became executive director, where she’s stayed for 18 years. Now, the focuses on managing the programs, which include the one-on-one visits, school mentoring and the little brother, little sister program where the kids play in a gym with a mentor. “It gets in you. Staying here so long is partially because there is always a new challenge,” she said. “You get satisfaction at the end of the day that in some small way, you are part of helping.”

rkady Spivak was inspired by his babysitters. As a child he would spend time with actors and stagehands backstage because his mother was involved in a Moscow theatre troupe. His father died when he was only five years old, so his single mom always brought him along. “I fell in love with the theatre when I was backstage. I couldn’t understand why people were out front watching. I thought backstage was more interesting.” Fast-forward to today and his lifelong love with live theatre has Spivak running Talk is Free Theatre as the artistic producer. It was an arduous, yet satisfying journey. Spivak and his mother immigrated to Canada in 1990 when he was 15 and, like many teens, he landed a job at McDonalds, where he worked for seven years. “It taught me great discipline and the importance of being able to do so many things at the same time and keep your eye on the final

goal.” Arkady attended York University, where he initially studied languages. “Then I took my first drama course while I was there, and I immediately switched to theatre.” With his eye on theatre management, he took a minor in business studies to meld the two disciplines. Arkady first worked with the Gryphon Theatre in Barrie for about a year in 2001. His next move was to create his own theatre group in Toronto. That’s when former Barrie Advance publisher Joe Anderson stepped in to change his mind. “Joe said, ‘Why don’t you start it here in Barrie?’ I said if you’re promising to be chair, I’ll think about it. And we both said yes, and here we are.” Today, one of his greatest pleasures is watching an actor own a part. “That is something absolutely magical, especially if it is something they don’t usually do.”

Barrie’s eco-friendly and animal-friendly entrepreneur S
uccess, Meghan Muise, co-owner of Ripe Juicery said, is operating a business that benefits people, animals and the planet. The juicery, with three locations in downtown Barrie, south Barrie and Muskoka, operates as a zero-waste company. All of the businesses packaging is compostable, recycled corn, all of the pulp from the cold-pressed juice is shipped to farms across the county as feed for about 150 animals each week, and the glass bottles are reusable. The challenge, Muise said, was convincing people it was all worth it. “It’s hard when you go to a franchise where hamburgers cost $2 to understand why our juice costs $12,” Muise said. “Sometimes things that are more beneficial to you cost a little bit more.” Originally from Collingwood, Muise said a lot of her family owned apple orchards. “My parents were really conscious of food,”
Muise said. “It was a way of life, and I took it to the extreme.” Five years ago, Muise said she found out she had a wheat allergy and that realization set her on a path toward a fully plant-based diet. Before opening Ripe Juicery with co-owner, Lindsay Haley, Muise worked at RVH in addictions. “I loved the front lines and working with the clients,” Muise said. “But I was bringing my blender to work every day and doing smoothies with the clients. “We jumped in with both feet.” Haley and Muise didn’t take home a paycheque for the first year the juicer was operating. “You can’t do a business just because you want to make money,” Muise said. “It takes passion and hard work.” Ripe Juicery has two locations in Barrie, downtown at 118 Dunlop St E., and in the south end at 371 King St unit 4.

hen Gerry Croteau came out as a gay man, he was fired. He was the administrator of a Christian-based seniors centre so he knew what was coming. “I worked there for seven years. The board gave me a letter that said I resign, please sign the dotted line,” the executive director of the Gilbert Centre said. His dismissal led him to the HIV-AIDS committee of Simcoe County, where he became its only employee. “What attracted me to the AIDS committee was it was a place individuals could be who they are and they were accepted.” That was 15 years ago. Since then, Croteau has morphed that small organization with a $58,000 annual budget into a diverse nonprofit that receives $800,000 in annual funding from various levels of government. The centre — named after Edward Gilbert, the first openly gay man with HIV in Simcoe County — has several programs.
Rick Vanderlinde/Metroland
Gerry Croteau – coming out and finding his place Gerry Croteau
Those include youth counselling, a Simcoe County-funded transgender program, and federal-funded research on how those living with hepatitis C can manage their lives. “In the last five years, things have started to take off, with hiring different staff and going for diverse funding for different things,” Croteau said. As if running the Gilbert Centre out of its 80 Bradford St. offices isn’t enough, Croteau also keeps busy with his Rogers Television show and his monthly column for Focus 50, called View from the Front Porch. Crouteau’s Rogers show was called Man Time when it started. But times are a changin’. “Then the producer came to me and told me to change the name and to make it all about LGBT issues. I said really? Now I get to talk about the issues LGBT people face.” With Gerry is a show about celebrating and learning to live in the LGBTQ community.

She started in nursing but soon discovered the job wasn’t for her. “It was easy to do the physical pieces that people needed but I wanted to talk with them. I knew I wanted a different profession, where I could dive in deep to support people.” The challenges facing many women are daunting and MacLennan believes more people need to know how bad it can get. “It can’t be in shadows anymore, we have to talk about it.” Human trafficking — when women are taken from town-to-town and sold for sex — is a real problem. MacLennan said she needs dedicated beds to help more of those women, but the shelter can only take them in when space allows. The shelter is nearly always full. It’s frustrations like those that MacLennan often takes home with her. “It is hard for me to know when to turn off from thinking about things that are happening here.” When she does get a chance to relax, it’s all about find “peace and quiet” at home.

Wilkins Walk
Grab your boots and hit the trail. Barrie offers up a number of hiking spots. Sunnidale Park Located on the east side of Sunnidale Road between Letitia Street and Cundles Road West, this 48.5-acre park was the original location of the Barrie Country Club. Now, the park features a playground, the Dorian Parker community centre, the Barrie Arboretum and plenty of trails.
Waterfront Trail Approximately six kilometres long, Barrie’s waterfront trail winds along the shore of Kempenfelt Bay from the east end of Allandale Station Park to the end of the North Shore Trail at Penetanguishene Road. Along the trail are 11 interpretive stations for residents to learn about the city’s history.
Ardagh Bluffs More than 17 kilometres of trails wind through this 518-acre area of south Barrie. The Ardagh Bluffs are located between Ardagh Road and Mapleview Drive, west of Essa Road. Observed wildlife in the environmentally protected area include whitetail deer, red fox, porcupine, and beaver.
Nine Mile Portage Originally created by early Aboriginal people, the route became known as the Nine Mile Portage by the British military during the War of 1812. Today, the walk mostly follows sidewalks and roadways from Barrie’s Memorial Square to historic Fort Willow.
Bayshore Ridge Running through the Tyndale neighbourhood and connecting with Wilkins Walk, the Bayshore Ridge trail has access points starting at Cox Mill Road, south of Dock Street. Wilkins Walk A meandering trail following Hewitt’s Creek with access at Big Bay Point Road, terminating at Wilkins Beach near Crimson Ridge Road. The trail connects to the Bayshore Ridge Trail and continues south of Big Bay Point Road.

Dr. Tim Cheesman and his Team want to Make You Smile
ESSA DENTAL CENTRE
orn and raised in Pickering, Ontario, Dr. Tim Cheesman considers himself very much “a local boy” who enjoys skiing, mountain biking, hiking and camping. Graduating from Laurentian University with an Honours BSC, he travelled to the U.S. for his dental studies, receiving his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) from the University of Detroit, Mercy. But the pull of family and the homeland drew him right back to Canada. Dr. Cheesman’s admiration for Canadian values is reflected in how he runs his dental practice at
Essa Dental. “Ethics are important to me,” he says.
“
Ours is a welcoming dental practice. When you are a patient, you are part of our family. I think it’s the homey feel of our practice, because it’s in a house and not a strip mall.
”
A devoted family man with three young children, Dr. Cheesman, understands the need for a soothing touch with people who are experiencing their first visit to a dentist. Initial visits for children are fun experiences, riding up and
down in the chair, counting their teeth, getting stickers, learning about the sounds and smells of a dental office. “We try to get kids involved in their dental care and motivate them to have the best possible oral hygiene.” “We just introduced a digital Panoramic x-ray machine to go along with our digital x-ray program,” says Dr. Cheesman. “All of our x-ray units are now digital which means less radiation to our patients. Our fees are according to the current year Ontario Dental Association fee guide and we do not exceed that guide. We offer our seniors

a discount and that is why we have long-term patients and so many referrals.” Essa Dental provides: • General & Family Dentistry • Crowns, Bridges & Veneers • Root Canals • Invisalign® Braces • Dental Implants • Nitrous Oxide • Zoom! Teeth Whitening We look forward to making you smile!

COMMUNITY TEAMS UP TO LAUNCH
Project Lifesaver Simcoe I
“
don’t think we ever should experience another Mandy Thompson in our community.” With those words Kris Hughston helped launch Project Lifesaver Simcoe on May 7, an initiative launched by simcoe.com, the Barrie Chamber of Commerce and Barrie police a year earlier.
It was the disappearance of Mandy Thompson, 72, in February 2017 that acted as an impetus for Project Lifesaver. Despite several police searches that included dogs, infrared technology and the OPP helicopter, Thompson wasn’t found until two hunters came upon her body about one year later.
Rick Vanderlinde rvanderlinde@simcoe.com
“I think there’s tools out there for the police to be able to use so that we’ll never lose another vulnerable citizen.” Project Lifesaver provides electronic bracelets that uses an FM frequency that can be monitored by Barrie police. If a person wearing a bracelet goes missing, police can zone in on their location. The Project Lifesaver committee raised about $32,000 for the program, which will start with 20 bracelets and two police transmitters. More bracelets would come available with demand, Hughston said. Citizens or a family member would apply to receive a bracelet. The initial cost of the bracelet is $500 for the first year, for the transmitter batteries, and bracelet, which needs to be cut off every 60 days to replace the batteries. After the first year, the cost is $10 per month. “We are going to take it on case by case. If they can show there are reasons they can’t afford it, we have sponsors in the background who can help.” The Guelph Police Service, which has already rolled out Project Lifesaver, found rescue times improved through the project. Const. Gord Woods, program co-ordinator, shared the story of Guelph’s first Project Lifesaver client. “When he did not have the bracelet, he went missing on a cold November night. He had been gone seven and a half hours by the time two citizens found him,” Woods said. After joining Project Lifesaver, the man went missing again in January. “It was two officers on duty who found him and had him back within 15 minutes of getting the call,” Woods said.

Consumer Proposal & Mortgage If you have too much unsecured debt and have trouble paying your debts as they become due, a consumer proposal may be an option for you. During a consumer proposal, your trustee will determine your income and your living expenses, they will negotiate a fixed monthly payment With all of your unsecured creditors to pay your debts. A consumer proposal typically involves paying a portion of your debt, extending the time period that you have to pay back your debt, or both. You typically make a payment to your trustee each month. The trustee then distributes this payment to your creditors. For example $50,000 owed on credit cards. Normal minimum payment is $1650, based on your budget if you can only afford $350, you can set up a plan to pay $350 for 48 months. Total $16,800, once you have made the last payment, your total debt is erased and you obtain a discharge from Consumer proposal. A consumer proposal is a common option for many people. It does affect your credit rating, a note is made on your credit bureau, which is removed 3 years after your date of discharge. Many people have concerns such as Will I lose my house, RRSP, be unable to renew or get a new mortgage? Lets address those concerns Consumer Proposal and your Home In most cases, if you demonstrate financial stress, negotiate in good faith a payment plan and pay on time you are unlikely to lose your home or assets. During the consumer proposal, your mortgage lender may become aware of the situation, when they routinely make a soft credit enquiry. They are not going to revoke your mortgage or start a power of sale just because you are in a Proposal. They can only initiate those proceedings if you miss mortgage payments. What is included in Consumer proposal A consumer proposal is filed to all unsecured creditors. Which such as credit card debt, personal loans, unsecured lines of credit, bank overdraft fees and in some cases CRA
taxes. Your secured loans such as car loan and mortgages are not included in a consumer proposal. You cannot file for a proposal to reduce your mortgage payments. You should speak to a Mortgage broker for solution to that
Renewing your Mortgage during a Consumer Proposal You may likely find your self in a situation where you have to renew your mortgage during your proposal period. Lenders will renew your mortgage as long as your payments have been made on time. The actual rate offer may be more in the posted rates range.
Getting a New Mortgage after a Consumer Proposal In order to obtain a new mortgage after discharge, you will need to demonstrate that you have 1, Rebuilt your credit, this can be achieved by getting a secured credit card (home trust Visa/Capital one MC) and using this card for purchases. This work by you giving deposit of $1000 to an institution, they hold it as colletrol and give you a VISA with a $1000 limit. Easy to obtain and paying the bills on this card on time can help restore your credit. Typically lenders want to see 2 years of responsible credit management. 2, Demonstrate savings habit to a lender. Although this is not part of underwriting process, lender will want to see, post discharge if you are making and attempt to build up savings, this is a cushion against job loss and critical as you will not have access to credit easily for next few years. Other increase savings such as RRSP will also count. If you need to purchase a home or switch your mortgage and have not rebuilt your credit. The only solution may be a B lender, these are lenders who will offer you mortgage through a mortgage broker for purchase and refinance, typically you must have at least 20% equity or down payment. They offer short terms such as 1-3 years and rates are typically 1-3% higher than the cheapest discounted rates. A short term mortgage allow you to continue building your credit and switch back to a deeply discounted rate later.

arrie is entering a transformational period. Just ask Mayor Jeff Lehman. His eagerness to help guide the city through this section in its history — where a substantial community will be developed in the south end, the core intensified, and the downtown repositioned as a cultural and economic hub — is partly why he plans to run for re-election in October. “We are starting to take our place as one of Canada’s most progressive cities,” he said recently. “Hundreds of millions in investment is now planned in our community, from development downtown to new communities in the

annexed lands.” So what, precisely, should Barrie residents expect in the next few years? Well, Barrie is heading toward another building boom. Several years have passed since the city acquired 2,300 hectares of land from Innisfil. While the area has sat undeveloped since the annexation, changes are imminent. Barrie will begin handing out building permits for development in the Salem and Hewitt’s secondary plan areas late this year. Eventually, the annexed land area will contain thousands of new homes, which are needed to help the city meet its provincial growth targets. The population is expected to grow from the current 147,000 to an estimated

210,000 by 2031. However, there are other areas of the city on the planning department’s radar. Significant development is planned along the Essa Road corridor, projects that will be supported by the construction of the Harvie Road bridge, the reconstruction of Essa Road and the redesign of Essa’s Highway 400 interchange. In October, council approved official plan and zoning bylaw amendments for the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka’s Grove Street site. The amendments pave the way for the eventual development of nearly 920 rental units, including more than 90 affordable apartments, on the property. Sale of the property will help YMCA staff find a new location — likely within the former Barrie Central Collegiate site. YMCA staff want to move into a new downtown facility within the next three to four years. That end of the downtown is slated to become a cultural hub, with the city poised to move forward with the $25.6-million reconstruction of the W.A. Fisher auditorium. Under the proposal, the redeveloped site would include space for 400 seats (or standing room for 800 people). There will also be an expanded catering kitchen, multi-purpose rehearsal and office space, a side loading dock, lounge area and fly gallery (theatrical rigging system). Moving east into the downtown, there are plans for improvements to Dunlop Street, while the Meridian Place and Memorial Square reconstruction should be complete this year. Work on the Sandbox entrepreneurial hub is underway, while the city is mulling future plans for a future marketplace at the Barrie Transit Terminal and several highrise projects — including a hotel near the Dunlop and Mulcaster streets intersection. “The idea behind Dunlop improvements is to create a corridor that’s more pedestrian friendly, has the right esthetics for the downtown and helps promote economic development and vitality,” city engineer Alvaro Almuina said. More information on upcoming city projects is available at barrie.ca.

RVH is looking to the future By Jane Cocking
H
ealth care is ever evolving and to ensure Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) continues to meet this rapid pace of change the organization must always be looking to the future. “Before we look to the future, it’s important to pause and celebrate our achievements over the past year,” says Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO. “We’ve brought more kidney care services closer to home for Barrie and Alliston-area residents. In addition to the opening of a six-chair, in-hospital dialysis clinic in 2016, RVH nurses now provide dialysis treatments to criticallyill patients in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Cardiac Care Unit (CCU). RVH is also now designated as a regional hub by the Ontario Renal Network which allows greater flexibility to respond quickly to our patients’ unique needs.”
It’s also been a year of significant celebrations at RVH with the opening of the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Heart Program and the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Child and Youth Mental Health Program – services previously not available anywhere in our region. “There have been some challenges too,” says Skot. “On most days our health centre is over 110 per cent capacity, resulting in patients being cared for in untraditional spaces such as hallways and waiting rooms. We continue to work closely with the provincial government on solutions.” One solution was the opening of a 40bed Transitional Care Unit for patients with complex needs who have a firm discharge date but face a temporary obstacle, such as needing additional physiotherapy before they can be safely discharged to the community. RVH needs to plan further into the
future. With no room left to build on its current 40-acre Georgian Drive site, the organization is developing a longrange plan which includes a second campus to serve rapidly-growing Innisfil, south Barrie, Bradford-West Gwillimbury area, where services are currently limited. The planning process is being overseen by the RVH Board of Directors’ Capital Planning Committee, chaired by the board’s 2nd vice chair, Doug Frost. The committee includes hospital and RVH Foundation board members, hospital executives, a representative from the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network, municipal representatives from Barrie, Innisfil, Bradford West Gwillimbury and the County of Simcoe, as well as community representatives. Data collection and analysis, as well as significant consultation, is underway
