“The cycle really begins in the fall when from August to early November my full-time staff and I are busy doing fall cleanup, leaf removal, weed control and slit seeding the lawn,” explains Ray. “We don’t use topsoil but instead have a special machine which cuts slots in the grass and sows seed 1/8” deep. Come spring, there’s cleanup, rolling the lawn, aerating, and slit seeding and fertilization and bug and weed control. We spray for chinch bug twice a year now. Climate change is a real thing and because winters are milder and bugs aren’t dying off and summers are hotter with more drought, there are more bugs like chinch and grubs.” The beautiful lawns and gardens that Ray designs and maintains for his many clients also serve as his best form of advertising. “The proof is in the pudding,” chuckles Ray. “We create lush, thick, green lawns and beautiful gardens for our clients and then their neighbours ask how they did it, and

our clients thankfully recommend us.” Since the ban on pesticides in 2008, Ray has seen his lawn care business grow in leaps and bounds. “Since the pesticide ban, many people are finding it is too difficult to take care of their own lawn. Prior to the ban, as study showed that 67% of people looked after their own lawn, but today it seems more apparent that people hire a lawn care service and trust professionals like us to do the work. Michael and his sister Beverly Metzger-Noble are expert goldsmiths who founded Metzger Studio in 2000 and are now celebrating their 20th anniversary. Their showroom is like a treasure chest filled with sparkling rings, pendants, earrings and more. They are renowned for their remodeling and custom design work.
The Metzger goldsmiths use an ancient technique called Lost Wax Casting combined with a modern 3D printing technology to create realistic resin CAD designs. They are the only local jewellers who melt the metal and cast it to create jewellery from concept to completion. “We make a 3D resin cast of each ring and can even set in the stones so the client can try on their ring and approve the design,” explains Michael. “Custom made jewellery is not out of the realm for most people. It can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you bring in some of your unused gold jewellery and are just paying for labour.”
“People come in with old estate jewellery or pieces that have been sitting in their jewellery box for years and ask us to remodel the jewellery into something new and exciting,” says Michael. “One mom brought in a sapphire ring with a diamond on each side wanted to give a diamond to each of her daughters and keep the sapphire for herself, so we chose the same Celtic style

hile many of us are working from home, can you imagine the challenge of trying to broadcast a radio show from your home? Since March, most of the on-air radio personality team at KOOL FM have been broadcasting their shows from their living rooms, bedrooms, and even their backyards! KOOL FM has been named Favourite Barrie Radio Station five years in a row! Now the award-winning team gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how they were able to stay upbeat and keep their “KOOL” amidst the COVID chaos. And yes, there are a few ‘photobombs’ and ‘whoops’ moments---kids, dogs, dropped calls and all! Morning show hosts Dale and Charlie were one of the few teams to remain in the studio during total lockdown. “It was hard some days to ‘find funny’ at a time when nothing was,” says Dale and Charlie. “But using our twisted senses of humour and determination to laugh instead of cry,
we were able to give KOOL FM listeners a sense of normalcy for a few hours!” Asked if they took up any new hobbies during the pandemic, they answered sarcastically: ”Yes, Charlie took up parasailing while Dale crafted a wine aerator out of bamboo.” KOOL FM midday announcer Lisa Morgan broadcast her show from a tiny sound booth in her basement, often with her kids in the booth with her. “Sometimes my daughter would hold up signs to the booth window that said ‘I’m hungry or I want lunch NOOOOW!’ My husband is a high school teacher who was working from home. I then moved to the backyard and the birds were my co-hosts, but then someone’s lawn mover would start up!” Afternoon Drive host Darryl Mabley says: “Our master bedroom ended up becoming a ‘Darryl on the Drive’ home studio because there was a lock on the door!” Despite the lock, Darryl’s kids (age 2 and

e wish to thank the many kind people who feel that we deserve this recognition,” says Jay Davis, Pastor of Mapleview Community Church in south Barrie. “It’s valuable and exciting for our Church to be recognized in this way after serving the community for the past 23 years.” Pastors Jay and Jody Davis founded Mapleview Community Church in 1997 which is affiliated with Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. Pre-COVID 19, church attendance ranged from 700 to 1,200 people. “We have 18 acres, so during the early days of the pandemic we were able to offer Park and Praise Sunday Worship services for 150 plus cars in our back field and later we added a 40 x 60-foot outdoor tent for Sunday services,” says Pastor Jay. “Since the beginning of October, we have come back inside and have removed 400 of the chairs and now have properly spaced seating for 200 people. Our church needs to be a safe sanctuary for all people with all kinds of thoughts, opinions and beliefs.” Pastor Jay credits his staff for their dedication “
for caring for others. “We all need to be kind, gentle and supportive in these uncertain days,” says the Pastor. “My key words are love, acceptance and forgiveness. My debt to God is payable to man—everyone is welcome to our church.” Mapleview Community Church offers programs for children, youth, adults, and seniors, including addiction recovery programs, divorce recovery, and an in-house food bank program. “We desire to be a church with a difference for every season of life,” says Pastor Jay. “Our children’s ministry is a place of encouragement for parents and children and pre-COVID, our Junior High and Senior High Programs were ministering to hundreds of kids weekly. Steve Fox purchased the family business toward the end of 1999 on December 24th and opened up in January 2000 as Fox’s Buns Master Bakery. Later it was changed to Fox’s Bakery in 2007. The newly renovated store uses over a thousand pounds of dough daily to create delicious baked goods on site ready to go. A great place to pick up lunch. irehouse Subs is proud to be a winner of the Barrie Advance Readers’ Choice Award.
Since we opened in Canada in 2015, we have carried on the passion for hearty and flavourful food, heartfelt service and public safety. Firehouse Subs was born in 1994 when Chris Sorensen and Robin Sorensen opened the first restaurant in Jacksonville, Fla. They took their passion for food, love for serving others and their family’s decades of firefighting and police service and created Firehouse Subs. We are not a themed restaurant. We have genuine first responder heritage. In 2015, the first restaurant was
opened in Canada. We now have 39 restaurants open and have remained open during COVID-19 for takeout and delivery. COVID-19 has created a huge crisis in our community, and we’ve been working to do whatever we can to support our community. We are all in this together. We have provided many lunches for local homeless shelters, Elizabeth Fry Society, women and children’s shelters, and Salvation Army Bayside to provide support to people during COVID-19. In April, we provided food to 65 paramedics in Barrie and 1209 paramedics staff all over Ontario through our Paramedics Day. We

We were happy to serve them hearty subs to keep them going. Firehouse Barrie is also proud of providing grants through Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada.
In spring 2020, we received approval for a grant to Barrie Police Service worth $20,757 CAD in funding for the 2020 Can-am Defender Max UTV. This will help Barrie Police access hard to reach places for search and rescue missions. This month, the Foundation awarded the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services a grant worth $15,538.60 CAD to purchase four CPR Training Manikins, two Infant CPR-AED Training Manikins with CPR Monitor, four Adult CPR-AED Training Manikins, four CPR Prompt Training Kits and and four Zoll AED 3 Trainer Packages. Last year, we provided funding to the Barrie Police Service to purchase an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator)
for their outdoor training sessions for officers. Again, we want to thank you all, our valued guests, who help us give back by rounding up while buying subs, providing canister donations and buying pickle buckets. As you can see, with everyone’s support, we have managed to provide funding for important items that our first responders use to protect us as a community. We would also like to send a big thank you to Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada for supporting our communities year-round, and especially through COVID-19.
