uilder, Steve Garrow, of Dezign2000 Construction, travels a great deal for work and play, and following those lengthy car trips, there is no more welcome sight than a luxurious grand hotel lobby to rest and take a load off. “You get to this nice hotel, it’s open, bright, and there are these great sofas. I could sit there all day. Just have a drink and relax,” he says. Those experiences were the impetus behind his unique decision to use “hotel lobby” as the design theme in the build of his Lora Bay home. Enter the front foyer and gleaming white Italian porcelain tile draws you into the spectacular open concept layout. The residence is filled with natural light and every angle from floors, to windows, walls, coffered ceilings, and doors is a visual treat.

“The tile was the biggest decision we made,” says Garrow, who wanted to lay tile throughout the entirety of the 2900 square foot main floor living area. “In Canada, we’ve been raised with wood products. The homes we see with all tile are in Nassau and Florida, warmer climates, but with heated floors that’s not an issue anymore.” Garrow chose an ultra-thin 30 by 30-inch tile that is only 5 mm thick and gets its stone look from photographically imprinted colour that is glazed into the tile in a high-tech process. “You would swear it’s marble,” he says. “Everyone asks, ‘what mountain did this come out of?’ It’s done so well. The tile has some translucence and it’s machined perfectly flat so you don’t have those ripples found in regular tile. We’ve dropped plenty of stuff on it and haven’t snapped one yet.” When he originally placed the massive order for the specialty tile, the supplier didn’t have enough in stock so he had to pony up $50,000 for an advance overseas order. That expenditure lent many a sleepless night as Garrow and his wife worried if they had even chosen the right colour. “Turns out it was the best thing I ever did,” he now says. “You get tired of wood. They scratch and dent. Tile is the easiest flooring to maintain. A damp mop and boom, boom, boom. You’re done. I’d be hard pressed to go back to wood now.” An equal amount of attention was directed toward the walls of the residence, which possess a modern, commercial 3-D look. “Everyone thinks they are panels,” Garrow says. “But it’s drywall with shadow strips. It’s a lot of work, but it has a clean, crisp look with a level five finish. 10

10

n

2020-11-13 2:06 PM

The baseboard is at the same level as the drywall. It’s all at the same plane so if you run your hand down it, the casings are on the same face as the drywall.” The windows also got the hotel lobby treatment. “Because of the shiny floors, all our glass goes right to the floor,” Garrow explains. “Tile touches the window and the glass goes right up to the bulkhead. There’s no drywall above or below the window. It gives a very clean look.” One of the greatest accomplishments in his build was the use of natural light to keep the home airy and bright. The all-white colour scheme, punctuated by a few pops of grey in the kitchen is part of the reason. Married with strategically placed windows, glass railings and an enormous 14-foot stairwell that leads to the lower level, light flows through the home like a river. “My hydro bill is down,” Garrow says. “In the daytime, we don’t need lights at all.” All-white colour schemes are ubiquitous these days, but the secret in keeping the home friendly lies in colour management explains Garrow. “Whites are going to stay for a while. But you have to manage your whites. You consider the interior lighting and ambient light through the

windows. They can change the colours. Benjamin Moore has a whole colour book on white. Hospital white can be chalky. So you should consider where the sun is coming in. If it’s hitting that wall. Work with three or four whites so you have the right effect. The colour can warm or cool the room.” Garrow also used magnificent rosewood veneers to bring added warmth to the home. Sourced from importer, Wanderosa Wood Products, the veneers were applied on all the custom-made doors and stair stringers. Yet another feat in construction as his team ensured that each grain matched perfectly and all door hinges were hidden for a seamless presentation. A large amount of design time was also spent on proportions. “Getting the proportions correct is key,” Garrow says. “If you have 12 feet of glass, how do break up that 12 feet? Which increments work for a 4-foot transom? Looking at your ceiling height, a 13.6 foot or 14.2-foot ceiling completely changes how you feel in the room. People are building 9 feet walls with great rooms that are 20 feet. But you want it to be comfortable, not too voluminous. Nine feet feels too house-like to me. Mine are 10 feet 4 ½ inches. Not too high, but high enough.” GoodLife | Georgian Bay Spring 2020

For working areas, Garrow chose quartz countertops throughout the house, from vanities to bar to kitchen counters. Pro series Jenn Air appliances aid culinary pursuits in the kitchen with an induction stovetop instead of a gas range. “The heat is easier to control than gas,” says Garrow. “We had a Wolf range in our last home. They’re beautiful at the beginning but if you cook a lot they’re always dirty. This wipes clean and it’s fast. Put a pot of water on a gas range and you can read the whole paper before it boils. A pot of water boils on the induction in the time you make a quick washroom stop. We’ll never go back to gas.” The fridge, wall ovens and a microwave are all well within reach tucked discreetly behind the wall of the adjoining open pantry area, keeping the kitchen’s look unencumbered by bulky appliances. The adjoining dining area leads out onto the covered patio for after dinner drinks. Much of the furnishings were already preowned, but designer Anna Watson was brought in to offer advice and source new items. Lighting in the home also received intense deliberation. The fixtures are exceptional with embedded lighting, drop ceiling effects and more. “I wanted an ambience,” Garrow says. “In terms of lighting you’re always learning and experimenting. Looking for good ideas of what works. I didn’t want to walk in the door and have a 300-watt lightbulb over my head. All lights in our home have dimmers and you can really set the mood. There’s under counter lighting throughout.” Special lighting effects are particularly noticeable in the whimsical lower level which has an authentic nightclub feel. Entry comes through the enormous fourteen-foot split stairwell where the magic unfolds before you. A bar, lounge, media center, wine room and two guest bedrooms are found here making it the ultimate entertaining center. Garrow went for vinyl flooring here with a wood look. “We’re in Lora Bay. Party central. Vinyl is waterproof and bullet proof,” he says. “Perfect for a party when people are dancing and drinking. And the bar stools won’t scratch it.” This is the third home Steve Garrow has built for himself, adding to the 20 or more he built for clients in Lora Bay alone. But he’s looking forward to putting his new ideas into the build of his next residence and has decided to sell. 336 Sunset Boulevard in Thornbury is now on the market represented by Royal LePage Locations North (Thornbury), Brokerage.

S

hannon Busby and partner Rick Sadler entered the building development trade with a mission to create unique residential spaces that serve multiple purposes. The homes they now build are designed for personal growth, income potential, entertainment opportunities, and the ease of a convalescent environment that provides aging in place. Their company, Xtreme Property Developments, Inc. is nearing completion on their third build in Southampton and if it is anything like their unique Meaford property, it promises to rock the housing market with forward thinking of what can be achieved in a home. The property at 120 Collingview Street, where they currently reside, is a modern structure of steel siding, concrete, wood and porcelain that is free of any drywall that may emit fine dust particulates in the air and compromise lung health. As new builders, the couple frequented all the home and trade shows, perusing new and innovative products. “We wanted to think outside of the box.” Busby says. “We have 20 feet of porcelain walls. The house is artistic, multi-featured and custom in every way. Nothing is cookie cutter. We have $35,000 in chrome and stainless steel trim alone.” The residence was designed around three distinct pods that can be completely secured and locked off from one another. The great room pod comprises the main living area, kitchen, and dining area. The master suite pod runs the whole width of the house and the third self-contained pod has its own entry, includes a full kitchen, and lends potential as a rental suite, in-law suite, AirBnB, or a caregiver suite. It could also become a business center, or arts and craft studio. “It’s a multigenerational property,” Busby says. “In-laws, kids, grandparents, or renters could all live here comfortably without disrupting family life. If a couple is looking for a home that is wheelchair accessible and has main floor living with a master, this is it.” A commercial grade elevator supports each of the pods, running all the way up to the rooftop veranda from the garage level. Extra wide doorways throughout the home were also installed with wheelchair accessibility in mind. With Covid-19 still raging and the potential of future pandemics looming large, Sadler and Busby wanted to tap a property’s full support system to secure a family’s survival and happiness. “After nursing homes became hotspots for the virus, families began bringing loved ones home from long-term care facilities,” says Busby, who is a palliative care nurse herself. “A full-sized hospital bed can be rolled out onto all three different verandas on different floors of this home.” Busby’s partner, Sadler, a police officer who also works on the frontlines during the pandemic notes that a growing population of adults are hitting retirement and expressing a desire to stay in their homes as they age. “This is a home for someone who wants to live to the fullest, and remain here until their last days,” he says. “The separate rental pod also offers the potential of being used as an income property for snowbirds. And we have indoor parking for seven vehicles so all the recreational vehicles can be kept locked and secure under cover.”

15

2020-11-13 2:07 PM

The two and a half acres of property the house stands on is surrounded by fruit trees and a Koi pond and boasts an R3 zoning, bringing the added possibility of fulfilling the dream of a hobby farm for those who want a few goats and chickens. “It’s basically a living, working, retiring, vacationing, oasis all in one house,” Busby says. Enter through the front doors of the home and you are in the primary living pod. The flooring throughout is Italian porcelain tile, sourced from the GTA. Convenience begins right at the foyer door with a massive ten feet deep by 8 feet wide walk-in closet that has built-in tiered shoe and boot storage and heated floors. “If the family is a ski family, everything could be put in there right away to dry out,” Busby says. Your view from the entry travels right through the home to the back deck that offers views to Georgian Bay. When designing the home the couple deliberately structured the house at a 12-degree angle away from the main roadway to take advantage of every view possible instead of 16

building plumb to the property line. The open concept main living area has twenty foot ceilings, overlooked by an upper lounge with glass railings. The executive chef kitchen is anchored by a sixteen-foot kitchen island with quartz countertop. Appliances are all high end stainless steel professional series with a six-burner Thor range that has double ovens, a built-in stainless steel grill and an electronically retractable power downdraft that pops up when needed and recedes when not in use. The island seats four comfortably and a harvest table with bench seating is perfect for entertaining nearby. The couple chose wood laminate for their ceiling treatment to avoid the drywall, which adds warmth to the overall white theme on the main floor. An eight by eight-foot walk-in pantry accommodates extra storage. Lighting throughout the home all came from Panet Lighting Center in North York, including the blingy pendants over the kitchen island and in the master ensuite,

with subtler ring lighting in the great room and bedrooms. For ambience, propane fireplaces are found in both the great room and the main floor master. Accompanying the master is a long dressing room with custom cabinetry, jewelry drawers and a library ladder that enables access to upper level storage. The ensuite’s shower is enormous at twelve feet long and eight feet wide with two shower towers and embedded wall niches. “Our friends call it the locker room shower, it’s so big,” laughs Sadler. A separate standalone soaker tub and double vanity on the opposite side completes the picture. Take the elevator up two levels and you arrive in the unique party room with galvanized walls, a third food service area, media lounge and direct access to the wrap around astro-turfed outdoor veranda. Here, a fire bowl, two-person plug and play hot tub, outdoor lounge, Muskoka chairs and BBQ add to the creature comforts. Perched atop a mountain with neither noise nor light pollution the deck is a quiet sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of busy life. “We’re only five minutes from Thornbury but we’re so high up we don’t get any Highway 26 traffic noise,” says Sadler. “And we look down on the top of the trees with breathtaking views of Beaver Valley, Georgian Bay and Georgian Peaks. The sunsets are amazing. We get fireworks from Kimberly, Thornbury and Collingwood.” “You can see the Collingwood grain elevators from here,” adds Busby. “The water tower, and as far away as Wasaga Beach.” It’s the perfect spot for a nightcap and stargazing, especially during meteor showers when Sadler says they have counted twelve shooting stars in half an hour because of the lack of light pollution. The couple are already planning private romantic stargazing events for their Air BnB guests. “Guests come in from the elevator with private access to the rooftop. It’s very romantic,” Busby says. “We’re considering doing a gin tasting and a catered event paired with an Air BnB stay,” Sadler adds. “It’s very much an entertaining home. We had a Nashville recording artist for an event who played live music up here.” Now that the couple’s next build is nearing completion and they have trained a keen eye on a future project with a pickleball court and indoor pool the couple has listed 120 Collingview Street in Meaford for sale. The property is currently on the market represented by Sue Creed of Forest Hill Inc., Brokerage. GoodLife | Georgian Bay Spring 2020

P

icture a beach that appears to stretch forever with mountains in the distance, waterfalls, lush and peaceful forests and a Mediterranean-style climate. It may seem like an unattainable getaway with travel plans on pause but there’s no passport required for a vacation in Parksville and neighbouring Qualicum Beach. There’s a combination of relaxed small-town vibe and a variety of ways to connect with nature yearround here. Located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia and overlooking Georgia Straight, Parksville-Qualicum Beach is about a twohour drive from Victoria International Airport or 45 minutes by car from the Vancouver-to-Nanaimo ferry. (Check the British Columbia Government website for the latest travel information and COVID-19. Visitors arriving from other provinces are expected to follow the same guidelines as everyone else in B.C., travelling safely and respectfully.)

Although you won’t mistake it for a tropical vacation, it does have Canada’s only Mediterranean-style climate, says naturalist Ronda Murdock of Pacific Rainforest Adventure Tours. Daytime winter temperatures here typically hover around 8C, with occasional light snow. Spring comes weeks ahead of Ontario, meaning four-seasons golf and other outdoor pursuits. If you can’t live without lots of the white stuff, Mount Washington Ski Resort area is an hour away. It boasts the deepest snow in British Columbia. Summer is glorious, with temperatures in the mid-20s, plenty of sun and no humidity. Shallow water means great swimming, making Parksville popular for family vacations. “Good food, good beer, good coffee, good beaches,” Jeremy Perkins says as he ticks off the local draws. the smoky-rich flat white is the best I’ve had anywhere. Perkins, an artisan coffee expert and former professional violist, moved to Qualicum Beach from the UK with Canadian-born Hannah and their family, opening the business in 2017. It’s also a great breakfast spot. “Winter is pretty good. We don’t get a lot of snow, although there’s a few awkward days,” Perkins says. Being located about 2½ hours from Tofino and Ucluelet makes the wild west coast of Vancouver Island an easy trip from the Parksville area, he points out. The snow-capped Coast Range mountains on the B.C. mainland seem much closer than reality, forming a dramatic backdrop to the long string of sandy beaches, including Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park. Parksville’s downtown community park has a wide, half-kilometre-long beachfront boardwalk. The star of the coastal show is the dramatic tides.

The water goes out for up to a kilometre, creating the unusual sense of walking on the ocean floor. At low tide, the beach draws families, beachcombers and walkers looking for some solitude amid one of nature’s best shows. Several hotels take advantage of this natural wonder. Downtown hotel The Beach Club Resort fronts the boardwalk and Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort, a mix of low-rise condos and log cabins, overlooks Rathtrevor Beach. Paulina Alexander is the spa director at Tigh-NaMara, which is known for its indoor mineral pool grotto, spa treatments and Treetop Tapas & Grill dining room. The facility has re-opened with full and half-day spa packages and limited guest numbers visiting the grotto in half-hour blocks in order to promote safety and distancing. Or you can play mermaid for an hour at Avacena seaweed baths experience in Qualicum Beach from April to October. Sink back in one of two repurposed claw-foot tubs filled with heated water. Located outdoors and overlooking a garden, the slippery, colourful seaweed in my tub was far from icky. It was cool and silky and felt good on my skin, making me feel somehow connected to the ocean as I played with the long fronds and popped bladder wrack seaweed pods to release an aloe-like gel. Owner Liz Glowacki, a licensed harvester who gathers the seaweed from rocks at low tide on nearby beaches, is Avacena’s owner and the “curator of seaweed experiences.” She brews guests a cup of tea made from herbs in her expansive garden and adds a few drops of a customer’s preferred essential oils to a jar of Epsom salts for the bath, which helps offset some of the more pungent seaweed aromas. This is also a year-round prime birdwatching area, especially during the spring migrations. Central Vancouver Island is one of three self-guided birding routes on the new BCBirdTrail, a kind of ale trail for bird lovers. Speaking of ale, the funky tasting room at nano-brewery Love Shack Libations is temporarily closed, but drop by on Saturday afternoons to pick up a few bottles of the large range of excellent brews that Dave Paul makes one barrel at a time, then hand-bottles. Paul is well known both for his quirkily named, ever-changing beers that often use local ingredients and enthusiastic Facebook videos announcing his brew of the week. Passionate naturalists Gary and Ronda Murdock of Pacific Rainforest Adventure Tours have been leading a variety of full and half-day eco-excursions in the area for 20 years. They’ve switched to private tours under COVID, where outdoor activities with distancing are considered among the safest things to do. They took me on a customizable Parksville Qualicum Amazing Places Tour, choose-your-own adventure itineraries that can include exploring

tidal pools at low ride or a tour of nearby waterfalls, including Englishman River Falls. We explored two under-the-radar community parks that Ronda says even some locals may not know about. At one stop, I plucked crunchy green sea asparagus as we walked along flat rocks exposed by low tide. A high-priced treat in gourmet markets, it was there to nibble for free as we hunted for fossils, admiring sea creatures embedded in the rock millions of years before. As a newbie birder, I’ve also taken one of their birdwatching tours, led by local ornithologist guide Christopher Stephens. Ronda also leads forest bathing walks in the Heritage Forest of Qualicum Beach. The Japanese practise of shinrin-yoku is a slow, mindful walk among the trees, a stress-easing way to feel calm and grounded. Just five minutes from town, the 50-acre Heritage Forest has a network of wide, easy-level trails. The paths are covered with wood chips and pleasantly springy underfoot. The area was saved from developers by volunteers like the Murdocks, who were part of the push to raise more than $1 million to buy the land, ensuring it remained an ecological reserve. Stepping into the cool and quiet heart of the oldgrowth forest and smelling the clean air is instantly calming. There are Garry oaks, magnificent arbutus and massive Western red cedars. The cedars have great spiritual significance to the Coast Salish people, including members of the Nanoose and Qualicum First Nations who have inhabited this land for thousands of years. They grow alongside towering Douglas firs, some more than 500 years old and stretching 60 metres tall and more. Gary

explained the tree roots fuse with those of other Douglas firs, creating an underground communication network across the island. I can’t come to Parksville and Qualicum without making a couple of other stops: I’ve got three things on my mind: cows, goats and shopping. Morningstar Farm is a family run Parksville dairy where you can meet the cows that are milked when they choose, using an automatic voluntary milking system. Milk is pumped from the dairy barn to the Little Qualicum Cheeseworks across the yard. Pick up some cheese at the farmgate store or get a litre of fresh, pasteurized, cream-top milk whole milk for a toonie from the automatic milk dispenser. It was the first in Canada when it was installed in 2017. Coombs, about a 10-minute drive from Parksville, is famous for the luxuriantly bearded superstar goats who graze on the sod roof at the Old Country Market. Follow a sideroad to a clearing in the woods and the last place you’d expect to find pair of small, ultra-cool boutiques. But The House of Leaves and Bamboozle always have eclectic, fashionable finds. Some retail therapy rounds out the day nicely. Then a bowl of shepherd’s pie made with famed Salt Spring Island lamb in the cozy snug at the Black Goose Inn and a glass of local cider. Before drifting off to sleep to the sound of the waves from an open window, I set my alarm to get one more beach walk in before breakfast, looking forward to strolling the sandy stretch towards the ocean and mountains beyond. Linda Barnard was a guest of Parksville Qualicum Beach Tourism Association, which did not preview this story.

BRICK HOUSE HOME INSPECTION SERVICES Darcy MacLeod, Owner of Brick House Home Inspection Services is a Professional, Experienced Home Inspector with close to 1000 home inspections under her “tool belt”! Darcy is a Registered Home Inspector (RHI), WETT Certified (wood-burning systems), New Construction Inspector (NCI) and a Certified Master Inspector (CMI). Darcy is a member of the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI) and the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). Detail oriented with a knack for problem solving, she strives to recommend solutions if a defect is recognized during a home inspection. Purchasing a home can be very stressful so Darcy ensures her reports are clear and concise, providing relevant information without overwhelming the client in order to help them make “an educated purchasing decision.” Covid19 brought a temporary halt to the home inspection business. Darcy used that time to improve her home inspection skills and include new service options for her clients. With the rapid changes in real estate due to Covid19, purchasers have found themselves in multiple offer situations. This can stress the buyer to put in an offer without having a home inspection. Darcy recommends having a home inspection after purchase. The clients will still get valuable information on the condition of the home and any improvements that should be performed sooner than later. Working from Collingwood, Thornbury, Meaford and up to Owen Sound, Stayner, Wasaga Beach, Tiny and Grey Highlands, Darcy has established positive relationships with local real estate brokers, sales representatives and trades people. A recent testimonial from a realtor read “Hi Darcy, honestly, yours is one of the best home inspections I’ve been through with a client. You will be top of my list for recommendations!” KS, Royal LePage.

Brick House is a corporate sponsor of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society and Darcy is on their Fund Raising Committee.

THE TREMONT CAFE HAS MOVED

The Tremont Cafe has a new home at 100 Pine Street in downtown Collingwood. This elegant cafe offers an elevated dining experience. “It’s a neighbourhood place where people who share a love for authentic food and a proper drink feel appreciated and comfortable — where guests are greeted with open arms and treated like family. We call it inspired hospitality,” said Imad Chalha. The new space features a fresh look, while maintaining some key elements from the original Tremont Cafe design. “This location offers a much stronger presence at a more desirable address in the heart of Collingwood,” he explained. The Tremont Cafe is located at 100 Pine Street, Collingwood. For more information, call (705) 293-6000, or visit thetremontcafe.com.

Fish and Sips is Growing

Expansion is in the works for Collingwood’s Fish and Sips. “We had to expand because we were down on seating, due to COVID,” explained owner and third generation fish fryer, Paul Feather. By taking over a vacant store in the same building, the extra space will triple the seating. The popular eatery specializes in perfectly cooked fish with a light crispy batter. To wash down the tempting fare, a bevy of local craft brews, ciders and more are on offer. For more information, call (705) 293-7477, or visit fishandsips.ca.

Cheers to Local Cider

Bottoms up to Grey & Gold Cider Company, a relatively new player in the re-birth of cider making in Ontario. “We’re a local and sustainable, farm to glass cidery,” explained cider maker and owner, David Baker. The award winning cidery uses a low-intervention, natural process, letting the fruit be the star. Visit the onsite bottle shop, or arrange a private tasting. Grey & Gold Cider is located at 788171, Grey Road 13, The Blue Mountains. For more information call (416) 821-6751 or visit greyandgoldcider.com.

Holiday Baking & More

The Thornbury Bakery is gearing up for a busy holiday season. “It’s a very fun time for us,” admitted Dave Smith, who owns and operates the 120-year-old bakery with his wife, Trish. In full festive swing, the bakery will be serving up homemade fruitcake, traditional mincemeat, gingerbread men, oodles of holiday cookies, various pies, and more. “This year, we’re going to be offering gingerbread house kits and cookie decorating kits,” he said. Located at 12 Bruce Street, Thornbury (519) 599-3311, or visit thornburybakerycafe.com.

fter 18 months of construction, Black Bellows opened its much anticipated brewpub in January 2020. “We enjoyed two months of solid good times with a packed, vibrant restaurant,” explained Peter Braul, who owns and operates the downtown Collingwood brewpub with Bryn Davies and Scott Brown. Then a pandemic struck, and the world turned upside down. At first, the brewery took it pretty hard. “It was heartbreaking. We were forced to lay off our entire staff overnight. With the restaurant closed, we stopped brewing, and had fridges full of kegged beer and nowhere to sell it. It was a very dark time, and we weren’t sure we would make it,” he confessed. But, while contemplating the idea of shutting down for good, something happened. “We ran out of canned beer because so many people were buying it [from the onsite bottle shop or online],” said the brewer. The local community support was just unbelievable. We started brewing again, and actually sold out two more times. We were floored.” Fast forward to present day, and Black Bellows continues to churn out its popular suds, while operating a socially distanced eatery and bottle shop. To learn more about the hip brewpub, this Goodlife reporter recently toured the facility and caught up with Peter Braul and Scott Brown. Here’s how the conversation unfolded.

What’s the best way to describe the brewpub? Scott Brown: It’s a quirky, fun and adventurous place to come and experience amazing beer and great food in a restored heritage space. Located in one of downtown Collingwood’s oldest buildings, the venue is rich in local history. Built in the late 1890s, it originally housed a black smith and carriage making shop and later became the home of Dey’s Body Shop. By the time Black Bellows took it over in 2018, the building had been in the Dey family for over 140 years, making it the longestrunning business in Collingwood history. What drew you to this space? SB: As history buffs, we had our eyes on this building for a long time. Before we even owned the space, we called our company Black Bellows (a bellows is a device used for blowing air into a fire) to celebrate the history of this architectural gem. The hope was to eventually end up here. We love the story of this building, and we’re proud that we were able to restore it. Other than this building, there are very few examples of our industrial heritage left in Collingwood. Most of it has been lost. Prior to the brewpub, your popular craft beer was known to consumers, having been on LCBO shelves and on tap at bars and restaurants since 2016. Can you offer a brief history? Peter Braul: Like many craft brewers starting out, we began doing contract brewing at an established brewery. After gaining a strong following, we decided to go the brick and mortar route. Black Bellows celebrates its location’s rich history. Particularly noteworthy is the hip vintage lounge, which showcases original brick chimneys, a soot blackened wooden ceiling, exposed high beams and more. While renovating, did you find any interesting historical finds? SB: We found lots of bottles from the turn of the century, and behind the walls there were all kinds of receipts for auto body work for 25 cents. Can you imagine paying that now! [laughs]. we believe in the spirit of relentless invention, and embrace a no-rules approach to brewing. We’re always striving to offer new, fresh and exciting flavour profiles for people to enjoy.

Bursting with character, the interior also features a brewery (visible through the building’s repurposed original glass windows), a whimsical pub complete with traditional German wooden beerhall tables (currently separated with dividers), local artwork (including a giant bellow that hangs from the ceiling), a bottle shop housed in a repurposed shipping container, and a boat-shaped metal bar. Can you talk about your design vision? SB: Working with a few key local artists, our goal was to retain the building’s industrial history, while bringing the aesthetic of Berlin to Collingwood. Paying homage to the site’s metal working history, we used a lot of salvaged materials and repurposed them. For example, the bar is made out of distressed sheet metal. PB: We like to take something that’s forgotten and make it beautiful and useful again. We do the same with old beer recipes. What’s your brewing philosophy? PB: Along with focusing on letting the ingredients speak for themselves, we believe in the spirit of relentless invention, and embrace a norules approach to brewing. We’re always striving to offer new, fresh and exciting flavour profiles for people to enjoy. On a global scale, craft brewers are pushing the envelope on flavour profiles. Beers are tasting better now than they ever have before in history, and this evolution inspires us to be more experimental. 32

32

n

How many suds do you have on offer? PB: Between the bottle shop and taps, we have about 12 beers available. There are about 10 varieties for sale in the bottle shop, and a couple of extra brews on tap. What’s your most popular brew?

a wonderful jalapeño ranch dip. We also have a legendary burger and a fried chicken bucket, called the Bellows Bucket. And I think we are the only restaurant in the County that offers battered curly fries. We also have an Oktoberfeststyle sausage and giant pretzels served with beer mustard — to name a few.

PB: There are three tied for popularity. EL 9 WYE Lager, a tribute local beer named after our postal code, is definitely our best selling beer on tap. People have also really taken to Shinny Fuel, an American pale ale, and White [Witbier with Elderflower] also sells really well. There’s a black and white colour scheme to your packaging, which crosses over to the brewpub’s decor. Can you expand? SB: When you think about a beer label these days, it’s kind of like an arms race for who can be more over the top with colour. So, counterintuitively we went in a minimal direction to stand out. The black and white colour scheme is also a nod to the historical aspects of our building and brand. It almost reads like an old circus handbill. What’s on offer on the food front? SB: It’s delicious food and it’s fun. It’s almost like you are at the carnival, but with an elevated twist. For example, our mac and cheese balls are made with an artisanal cheese and are served with

Do you offer choices for folks with dietary preferences? SB: We just expanded the menu to include more vegan options. We have a great vegan sausage, vegan chickpea curry, and keeping with the carnival theme, we have vegan corndogs. Our fried chicken is also gluten-free. What about COVID safety protocols? SB: We have gone above and beyond the guidelines to provide a safe and comfortable space for our staff and customers. Along with being much more spaced out than we need to be, we have strict cleaning standards, partitions between tables, and active ventilation bringing in fresh air from outside at all times. Let’s hear about the bottle shop and delivery program. SB: It’s become a much larger part of our business than we originally expected. In part, it’s due to COVID, but people have also come to realize that it’s a convenient and fun way to get their beer, rather than standing in a line up at the LCBO or the Beer Store. And if you have questions, and want to talk to a brewer — we are usually around. With respect to delivery, we offer Ontariowide delivery with a $15 flat fee on shipping, and free local beer delivery on Monday and Thursday (L9Y postal code only). For the holiday season, the bottle shop will be carrying some festive beers, and gift baskets will be available for the craft beer lovers on your list. Besides the bottle shop online, where is Black Bellows beer available? PB: Various local and Toronto LCBOs carry it, as well as licensees that pour our products. What about the future? SB: Our vision for the future is a bit different now because we’ve had to pivot our business due to COVID. We’re definitely focussing more on our online bottle shop as something that can weather us through the cycle of restrictions. PB: With limited seating, we need to find other ways to market our products to the world. Having said that, we know that once this is all over — this place will be rocking again. But for now, it’s safety first. Black Bellows 40 Simcoe Street, Collingwood (705)532-1569, blackbellows.com 34

The health benefits of grandparentgrandchild relationships Not long ago, extended families were the norm, with multiple generations residing on the same street if not in the same house. Today the family unit is largely an amalgam of different situations. The rise of two-income families has pressured parents into finding childcare situations. Quite often grandparents once again step in to offer guidance and support for youngsters. This can be a good thing for both the grandparents and the grandchildren. Although a bevy of psychological research focuses on parent-child relationships, new evidence points to the benefits of the grandchildgrandparent relationship as well. Close relationships between these different demographics is often a sign of strong familial ties. A study from researchers at Boston College discovered that emotionally close ties between grandparents and adult grandchildren reduced depressive symptoms in both groups. Research at the University of Oxford among English children between the ages 11 and 16 found that close grandparent-grandchild relationships were associated with benefits including fewer emotional and behavioral problems and fewer difficulties with peers. Adult and grandchildren alike benefit from relationships with their elders.

The Most Secure Solutions

A

s the world is changing and Canada is no longer the gun free – leave your door unlocked- place that it once was. As the population grows around South Georgian Bay so is the crime rate, and security is more important than ever. Security for Action Lock is not about selling you the most expensive product on the market at the time. It is about meeting a client’s needs with the most secure solution required for their situation and environment that is user friendly for the customer and at a price that works within their budget. Over the past year an increase in requests from clients concerned about loved ones, suffering with Dementia, wandering outside the house when unattended has been noted. How do we keep them safe? The “Door Guardian” is a great solution for this problem. Entry Chimes and Door Alerts can be helpful, as is disguising the door. Some stores sell screens that look like bookcases, although a recent customer brilliantly thought of covering the door with a blind. Safety Grip/Child proof door knob covers have also been found helpful in some situations. With the baby boomer population aging, homes and business need to be adapted to accommodate for those with health problems and disabilities. Businesses can help by providing Door Operators and Wheelchair Access for their customers. Door Levers are ideal for people with arthritis as they often have difficulty grabbing a knob. Keyless Entry Locks can reduce the need for keys which can be

troublesome for the best of us. Action Lock sells Wi-Fi, Bluetooth & Remote-Controlled Keypads. One customer reported she was able to open/lock the door from her couch after knee surgery allowing her to let people in and out of the house, without getting up. No matter what your security, physical or financial needs may be Action Lock will work with you to find a solution to your problem. Customer satisfaction is KEY, is their motto, and they make every effort to hold that true.

Be Healthy, Naturally

Good Health Mart provides a better choice for premium health products

THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME WAYS TO FACILITATE TIME SPENT TOGETHER • Schedule regular family reunions or get-togethers. Host or plan multi-generation events that bring the family together and expose children to various members of their family. • Promote one-on-one time. Have grandchildren spend time with grandparents in intimate settings. Alone time can be good for both and offers each undivided attention. A meal at a restaurant or time spent doing a puzzle or craft can be interesting to both generations involved. • Video chat when possible. If distance makes frequent visits challenging, use technology to bridge that gap. Send photos, letters and electronic communications. Techsavvy grandparents can use Skype or Facetime to stay in touch and speak one-on-one with their grandchildren. • Share skills with each other. Either generation can play teacher to the other. Grandparents may have certain skills, such as baking, sewing or wood crafts, they can impart that may not be readily taught today. Children can help grandparents navigate computers, video games or sports activities.

Great part-time jobs for retirees Part-time consultant work may be just what retirees are looking for to fill their time and earn some extra money.

Upon retiring, many newly minted retirees find themselves looking for ways to fill their free time. Hobbies may not take up too much time, and travel can stretch retirees’ budgets. One way that retirees can make great use of their free time and make a little extra money is to find part-time employment. Part-time jobs can help retirees maintain their connections with their communities, whether it’s their professional community or the community in which they live, while also providing a sense of purpose. Retirees interesting in finding parttime work may want to consider the following jobs. • CONSULTING WORK: Many retirees have long résumés, and that experience is still valuable even after retirement. Consulting firms often hire experienced businesspeople on a project or contract basis, which can be great opportunities for retirees to fill their time and make sizable amounts of money without having to commit to long-term employment. • TEACHING: Retirees can also put their professional experience to work in the classroom. Inquire about teaching opportunities at a

nearby university or even the local high school. Such opportunities may only be available on a volunteer basis, but some might pay part-time salaries or small stipends. Either way, many retirees find that working with young people helps them stay young, and passing on lessons learned to younger generations can provide a strong sense of purpose. • SEASONAL WORK: Seasonal work is another great way for retirees to fill their time and make a little extra money along the way. Come the holiday season, retirees should have no trouble finding seasonal retail work at their local malls or shopping centers. In warmer months, retirees may find seasonal employment at area beaches, golf courses or parks. • Sports teams: Retirees who live in cities with professional sports teams may be able to find work with their favorite franchise. Professional sports franchises often rely on retirees to staff in-game positions like ushers and concessions employees, and some may even hire retirees to greet fans. While the pay might not be great, such positions are ideal for retirees who happen to be big sports fans. • CRAFTS: Retirees with a love of crafting can turn their hobby into income. For example, Etsy.com makes it easy for creative entrepreneurs to post their creations and sell them to buyers all over the globe. Sellers often dictate how quickly they can make and ship products, so retirees need not feel worried about being rushed. Many retirees still work even after calling it a career, and opportunities abound for men and women looking to fill their time and make a little extra money along the way.

Give the gift of a brighter future! Your gift will bring a lifetime of positive change for local families “Stay home” – “Shelter in place” How many times have we heard these words over the past few months. How many times have you been grateful you are to have a home with a quiet place to relax or work, reliable WiFi, air conditioning, heat, some natural light, some outdoor space. Yet for many in our region, home – if it even exists – is anything but safe, let alone a place that’s conducive to work, homeschool children or spend time with family.

A Home has Never Been More Important The Covid-19 emergency has reminded us all of our vulnerability to larger circumstances that we cannot control. Moreover, it’s illuminated the even greater vulnerability of large portions of our population who have not benefited from a safe, secure and comfortable home in which to ‘shelter in place’. At Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay, we serve the people that you see every day – but that don’t immediately come to mind as needing help with housing. They are the people working behind the counter at your local grocery store, the people packing your online orders, the people delivering your meals from your favourite restaurants. They are dental assistants, teaching assistants, early childhood educators. Across every aspect of our society and economy, the journey to full recovery will be a marathon, not a sprint. The covid emergency has amplified critically important issues – we must not overlook investing in the very families whose work we rely on every day. Families stuck in horrible living conditions, working hard everyday, who just need a hand up in order to fully thrive.

Ways to Give

Make a monthly or one-time donation When you become a monthly donor, your gift provides consistent and sustainable funding that lets us make long term plans for building our safe and affordable homes. Or you can choose to make a one time gift that will help make a profound and lasting difference for families in your community.

Tribute Gift Give a gift to honour someone special in your life or pay tribute to the memory of one that will be greatly missed. Making a tribute gift to Habitat for Humanity will not only honour someone near and dear to your heart but will help us make a safe, decent home a reality for local families. Thank you for your generous support!

Major Gifts Considering making a gift of $5,000 or more? Our team can show you how you might structure your gift, and work with you to ensure it delivers the impact you want it to.

Stocks or securities donation Did you know that if you donate your appreciated stock to us, you pay no tax on capital gains? Donate gifts of stock

The Georgian Triangle is becoming a region of housing inequalities – housing ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. Covid has shone a light on this and has reminded us all of the value of ‘home’. We hope that the greater appreciation of ‘home’ realized by the ‘housing haves’ will inspire a greater emphasis on philanthropy and policy decisions that favor the ‘housing have-nots”. If you are inspired to do so this holiday season, we would really appreciate you directing your charitable giving to Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay. You can find out the many ways you can give back here:

or marketable securities now or through your estate, and realize impressive tax savings while supporting affordable home building initiatives in your community.

Legacy Giving There are so many different ways to give. From bequests to life insurance to gifts of property, we can help you plan a gift that will chance the lives of local families.

Corporate Giving From home sponsorship, to Team Build Days for your employees on our build sites, Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay offers a full spectrum of opportunities for employee engagement, brand promotion and marketing growth.

Jennifer Hosten’s

Miss World crowning, in 1970, inspired a Hollywood movie and memoir by Danielle Leonard

H

ow is it possible that a Miss World pageant that took place in 1970 in London, England inspired a star-studded movie and a memoir penned by the pageant winner 50 years later? Here are a couple hints: The live broadcast show was disrupted by the very first protest of the Women’s Liberation Movement and it became the first Miss World contest to crown a Black woman the winner. At the centre of this pivotal evening was Jennifer Hosten who, as Miss Granada, won the beauty pageant. Now an Oakville resident, Hosten, as well as the women leading the protest that night, became inspiration for the movie, Misbehaviour, starring Gugu Mbatha Raw as her younger self, alongside Keira Knightly and Greg Kinnear. The Canadian premier screening took place at Oakville’s Film.ca theatre in September, courtesy of the Oakville Film Festival (OFFA). Hosten was in attendance to sign her new autobiography, Miss World 1970: How I Entered a Pageant and Wound Up Making History. “I’m very proud of this movie,” says Hosten.

48

48

“The movie captured the essence of the story. And it’s so historic. What’s interesting is that the issues that were important and raised in 1970 are still relevant today, with the #MeToo movement and Black Lives Matter.” The movie’s producer, Suzanne Mackie, who is also executive producer of the Netflix series, The Crown, credits a BBC radio interview she heard in 2010 for sparking her desire to produce the film Misbehaviour. During a Q&A following the Film. ca screening, Mackie described the BBC interview that included Jennifer Hosten and two women from the Women’s Liberation Movement: “It felt so alive, and there was something really moving about these wonderful women coming back together and reminiscing about an event so many years ago. There was so much fun and intelligence in that interview.” In the Q&A, the film director Phillipa Lowthorpe emphasized how important it was to have a strong cast for an ensemble movie like Misbehaviour to present conflicting perspectives without judgement. “We were really blessed because the women who are in it, Keira Knightly, Jesse Buckley, Gugu, all wanted to be in it… they all wanted to tell about early feminism and how the idea of western beauty got turned on its head in one moment in the Miss World context.” Hosten praised Mbatha Raw’s portrayal of her younger self. “She’s a brilliant actress,” said Hosten who spent time with the actress in Granada as she researched and prepared for the role. “In fact, my son told me, Mom, there were times (in the movie) when I wasn’t sure whether it was you or Gugu.”

Reading Hosten’s memoir in addition to viewing the movie adds a layer of insight to the story and offers a unique lens into what it was like to participate in Miss World during this unique period. She describes how she fell into the role of Miss Granada, won, and then moved to Canada after completing her Miss World duties that included tours around the globe, and visiting US troops with comedian legend, Bob Hope. Shortly after moving to Canada, Hosten married and moved to a farm outside of Ottawa where she started a family with her husband. It wasn’t long before an opportunity to serve as Grenada’s high commissioner to Canada set her on an exciting path in life that would span diplomacy, trade negotiation, international development, business ownership, hospitality, academia and now, writing, thanks to a long lost journal she found two years ago while downsizing. “I had kept the diary up during the Miss World and almost a year and a half later,” she says. “I had misplaced it and, as I was looking among papers, there was my diary, pages all fading.” After typing all her pages into a document over the course of a summer, she suddenly had a manuscript. With the movie preparing to release in a couple years, the book seemed like a perfect complement to it. “I wanted to share and let young women know that my life didn’t end with Miss World. I did many things after,” says Hosten, noting that we still have a long way to go in terms of gender equality and racial equality. Even still, she emphasizes to young women, “You have many more opportunities today than I had in 1970, so take advantage of them.”
