It was suggested that for this issue that I write about “Down Sizing” as I deal with it in Country Properties. Although it is a prevalent phenomenon in my practise I feel that people are more anxious today about the general state of the Real Estate Market as a whole. So with our usual format I will as best address this “Hot Topic” by way of our 5 Question/ Answer format. Here goes; Q. What has happened to our Real Estate Market? Well on April 27th, the Finance Minister of Ontario brought forth new legislation that was aimed at “cooling” the Real Estate Market. It turned out to be successful as our Market has cooled, both in volume of sales and price. Now I won’t get into the specifics, primarily because I don’t feel that the policy itself was the reason for the surge in New Listings, which in turn pushed down prices and gave Buyer’s pause. I believe the Market was waiting for an excuse, a catalyst, a trigger if you will to take profits. We have experienced such rapid growth in prices particularly last year, that some people are compelled to sell now. THERE IS NOTHING FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG WITH THE MARKET. Q. Are Country Properties effected in the same way as all properties? No. Country Properties are generally less liquid then In-Town Properties so they tend to move up in price on a slightly lower trajectory then InTown Properties and they also tend to fall at a slightly lower rate than In-Town Properties. The lower liquidity of Country Properties causes the lower volatility.
**GL-SS SMMR 2017.indd 5
Q. What can I do to mitigate the current Market effects on my Country Property? Country Properties by their very nature are unique and therefore not easily reduced to “Category or Commodity Pricing”. This gives us Country Property owner’s an inherent advantage over our “Cookie Cutter” In-Town property cousins. So if you are anxious and thinking about selling in today’s Market be sure to stress your unique property features, scream about your “one of a kindness” and hire a Great Country Real Estate Agent! Q. How long would it take to sell my Country Property? A few months ago I would have said in days. Now I would say that the Market is “Normalizing” towards a longer time frame similar to what we used to expect. Again I want to stress that our Market by historical standards is still very very good and that realized prices are still very very good……. just not euphoric like they were a few months ago….those prices are now history! Q. Should I sell or buy now or wait? My answer will very much depend on the circumstances but foremost remind yourself you are not a speculator or property flipper. Your decision to buy or sell is predicated most probably on your life cycle position. Please if possible don’t let the Market dictate your life choices. If you sell into weak prices then you will enjoy buying at weaker prices and vice versa. Price fixation is not always a healthy obsession. Country Properties, and in fairness any Home are where memories are made, where life takes place, where we feel safe and secure.

It’s Canada’s 150th birthday and we here at GoodLife couldn’t be prouder! We’re showing that pride, starting with our beautiful celebratory cover. To learn more about Kate Centracchio of CupKates and Kate, the Alliston baker/artist behind that showstopping cake, and get recipes for a couple of her Canada-themed treats, turn to page 60 (and see below). Those seeking something more savoury, meanwhile, should check out page 70, where you can find three ways to enjoy that delicious summer classic — devilled eggs. Another artist happy to share her talents with us this issue is Utopia photographer Mary Lucky. On page 78, take in the remarkable untouched beauty of her work and learn what it is that keeps her vision — and lifestyle — simple and pure. We are also pleased to share our special section on seniors — a growing and vibrant demographic across the country. Starting on page 19, you’ll find insight and advice on a range of issues, including finances, housing, health, volunteering and travel. Speaking of travel, this is the time of year many of us make plans for a badly needed vacation. If a close-to-home getaway is your ideal, turn to page 74 and learn how St. Anne’s in Grafton can offer you a healthy and indulgent minivacation — complete with first-class spa treatments, wellness classes and top-notch dining. Finally, however you plan to spend July 1 this year, we at GoodLife wish you a very happy Canada Day! Jacqueline Kovacs

LISA SMITH R.M.T. “Helping to resolve your Soft-Tissue Issues”
egistered Massage Therapist Lisa Smith uses her home based practice to help clients relax, rejuvenate and recuperate. “It is a space where people who don’t want to go into a clinical setting feel warm and comfortable” said Smith. Massage Therapy can help relieve a number of conditions including stress, migraines, back and neck pain, arthritis and repetitive strain injury. “You do get a lot of benefits from having massage therapy to help with optimum muscle functioning,” she said. Smith offers a range of high quality treatments including relaxation massage, therapeutic massage, reflexology and Thermal Palms® massage. “Thermal Palms® massage is something similar to hot stones,” she explained, but instead of using hard stones, it uses soft, hand held pouches that stay warmer longer and mold themselves to body surfaces such as the bones of the spine. “Some people like the heat from Thermal Palms® as their way to relax. Others benefit from the heat being able to relax their muscles so I can work deeper if needed.”
Smith also has training in prenatal massage. Pregnancy massages not only help alleviate stress, but they can help the body’s soft tissues and joints adjust to the structural and hormonal changes that occur throughout pregnancy. Smith’s practice has special pillows and bolsters to ensure a woman is comfortable at any stage in her pregnancy during the massage. When clients come into Smith’s practice, they can expect one on one, personal treatments. “When they come here they are empowered in their care,” she said. “It is about their needs, and I do what I can to make them as comfortable as possible during their time here.” Communication is very important to Smith, and she encourages patients to let her know how much pressure they like during the massages, and how much conversation they want as well. “Everybody is different, some people like conversation during massage and others don’t,” she said. Smith’s practice is located on 223 Huronia Road. For more information visit lisasmithrmt.ca.

Want to add a pop of colour and sophistication to your outdoor living space? This Charivari bench from Fermob (fermob.com) is a great way to refine any space with its sleek urban design. Designed by Juliette Liberman for her final graduation piece from École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the bench was originally made from wood. Try It! RHUBARB
Its co-starring role with strawberries in the muchloved pie aside, there are myriad reasons to love this stalky beauty. Case in point: One cup of rhubarb a day can significantly lower your risk of developing heart-related diseases and dementia, minimize stress, lower blood pressure and slow cartilage deterioration. The best way to boost your intake? Beyond eating it raw (dipped in honey or sugar, of course!) and including it in traditional favourites like strawberry-rhubarb crumbles, pies and cakes, try this: Cut stalks into small pieces and bake at 450°F for 10 minutes before adding to a greens-and-goat-cheese salad, or make a bowl of chilled rhubarb soup for a sweet-and-sour treat! — Liz Bruckner
Drink in SPRING Nothing says warmer days are here quite like sipping that first cold drink on your patio, balcony or porch. Toast the season with a refreshing frozen lemonade with cocnut rum! Here’s how: •P lace 4-6 cups of ice into a blender. • Add one 6-ounce can of frozen, concentrated lemonade. • Add ½ cup of coconut rum. • Blend until the drink has a slushy consistency, garnish as you wish and enjoy!
Getting FLAX? Maybe you’re familiar with the benefits of flaxseed oil. One of its omega-3 fatty acids, alphalinolenic acid, is thought to reduce the risk of high cholesterol and heart disease. It’s also associated with brain development, memory improvement, a stronger immune system, smooth skin and shiny hair. But because flaxseed oil also has a low smoke point, it’s been a tricky superfood to cook with. Until now. BG Health Group recently launched Alligga Flaxseed Cooking Oil, an all-natural, coldpressed oil with 60 per cent omega-3 content and a 485°F smoke point, making it perfect for sautéeing, roasting, stir-frying and baking — all with a healthier twist. See bghealthgroup.com/ products/alligga.
Raise a Chef Looking to nip picky eating in the bud? Encourage your little chefs to get their hands sticky in the kitchen. Studies show involving kids in meal prep and cooking makes them more likely to try new foods, and it also helps foster smart nutritional decision-making. Plus, it’s a ton of fun! To get started, check out White Hat Kitchen in Barrie. It offers hands-on, educational cooking and baking programs for kids ages six and up, as well as summer and PA day camps, birthday party programs and more. See whitehatkitchen.ca. — L.B.

Boost your smoothie with whey
The type of protein you eat at breakfast can impact weight loss, according to a study from Tel Aviv University. It found that whey, which is a by-product of cheese production and found in many dairy products, was more effective at controlling blood sugar than other sources of protein such as eggs, soy or tuna. In an article in the Independent, Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz, professor of medicine at Tel Aviv university, said that the whey protein diet significantly suppresses the hunger hormone ghrelin. So, power up that morning smoothie to feel fuller longer. — Rachel Naud

Want to catch some extra zzzs? Try sleeping outdoors. A report from the University of Colorado Boulder found that a short weekend trip to the woods is enough to reset our circadian clocks. The increased exposure to natural sunlight in the great outdoors increases melatonin levels, the hormone associated with sleep and wake cycles. — R.N.
Brain Boost For a healthy, strong body, you have to challenge yourself. And it seems the same applies to the brain, according to a study published in JAMA Neurology. The findings indicate that adults aged 70 and older who engaged in mentally stimulating activities had a decreased risk of developing mild cognitive impairment, the middle stage between a healthy brain and dementia. How do you challenge your brain? It’s as easy as learning a new activity or craft, and by staying socially active and involved in your community. The trick is finding something that interests, engages and challenges your mind. — R.N.
Take a BITE out of aging You may associate collagen with fighting wrinkles, but did you know this body-produced protein is also found in hair, nails, bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons? As we age, though, our natural production of this protein slows and collagen fibres become prone to breakage, resulting in wrinkles, aching joints, and ligament and tendon injuries. But now there’s a tasty way to fight back. NeoCell Beauty Bursts not only deliver collagen, but also moisturizing hyaluronic acid and reinforcing vitamin C, all in a chocolate-mint- or fruitpunch-flavoured chew. $19.99, NeoCell.com.

Stopover: The Azores On your way to Europe this summer? Consider a pit stop halfway there. The nine islands that make up the archipelago of the Azores used to be one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Lush and green, despite being made up of 1,766 volcanoes, this autonomous region within the Portuguese state has made great gains since the 1970s, when it was still a relatively poor fishing outpost. Island life teems with opportunities for visitors to sail, dive, deep-sea fish and explore more than 120 geotourism sights — everything from volcanic caves and ravines to hot springs. The whale-watching is phenomenal, as the Azores is one of the world’s largest whale sanctuaries. The best time to go is August and September, when the rain is down and both the air and ocean temperatures are high. Check out flights to Ponta Delgada via SATA airlines at sata.pt. — Doug Wallace

Turndown: The Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana Talk of Cuba continues to swirl among travel industry insiders, much of it about how prominently the U.S. will feature in the future of the island’s tourism. Wonderful, then, to hear about more solid plans: the forthcoming opening of a Kempinski hotel this summer in the UNESCO-designated Manzana de Gómez building in the heart of Old Havana. Built in 1910, the heritage property was Cuba’s first European-style shopping arcade. The 246 rooms and suites are kitted out with a refreshing modern-traditional design. Throw in lavish original architectural flourishes and vaulted ceilings, and you’ve practically got a movie set. Three restaurants, a rooftop terrace and swimming pool with sweeping views of Old Town, and a spa by Switzerland’s Resense luxe up the luxury even more. The cigar lounge is a no-brainer. The Senior Years If you’re 65 or older, you’re in good company — and plenty of it! According to the 2016 census, there are 5.9 million people aged 65 and older in Canada, more than our country’s 5.8 million children under 14. We’re also living longer: women’s current life expectancy of 83, for example, is predicted to hit 90 by 2100. No wonder so many older Canadians feel that the senior years are the best years. To help you make the most of this time of your life, we’ve rounded up information on housing, health, travel, financial planning and more. Read on for tips and insights for a happier retirement. River Cruises
Intergenerational Travel
“River Cruises are huge right now,” says Barbara Dobson, senior travel consultant for Transat Travel. “Unlike ocean cruises that hold 5,000 to 6,000 people, a river cruise has 130 to 200 people tops. It’s more intimate and a really relaxed way to travel. And they get fresh local food every time they dock.” River cruises include the cost of wine and beer in their meals as well as fees for excursions, unlike the bigger ships. “There are so many rivers in Europe to explore,” Dobson says, “including specialty escorted group trips, like the Christmas Time river cruise out of Vienna and Tulip Time out of Amsterdam.”
Grandparents, their adult children and their grandchildren now travel together to create family memories, and cruises are the perfect venue. During the day, kids are in children’s programs, teens are on the flowriders, parents are grabbing some serious me time and seniors are relaxing, enjoying events tailored to them. In the evening, everyone hooks up again for dinner and a show. And because you’re travelling with your accommodations and possessions, it’s all stress-free.

Hop aboard your luxury coach and enjoy the running commentary from your experienced tour guide as you take in the scenic roads and city sights across the globe. Insight and Trafalgar are premiere tour operators for coach tours across Canada, the U.S., Europe, Australia, Africa, the Mediterranean and more. No worries about transportation, where to go or how to negotiate languages and currency. Your itinerary, meals, sightseeing, ferry crossings and gratuities are all handled for you — as a bonus, you might even learn how to dance the flamenco.
All-Inclusives Another popular trip for the family is the all-inclusive. “You go to the airport, get on a plane and are transferred right to your resort,” Dobson says. Everything is included, from food and excursions to transportation. “We can pretty much create a custom tour that best suits the client,” she adds. “A villa in Tuscany? No worries, we can do that.”
Travel Gift Cards Giving the gift of travel for graduating grandchildren, honeymooners and expectant parents is a new trend for seniors. “Here’s $500 toward a trip” is an amazing gift, Dobson says. Contiki is one tour operator that specializes in European high-energy, discovery and explorer trips for 18- to 35-year-olds.

Your Travel To-Do List Buy travel insurance Include medical, cancellation, repatriation and emergency coverage in your policy. Pre-existing conditions could pose excessive medical fees in certain countries. Double-check your travel documents Make sure you have tickets, passports, money and ID — and that all are secure. Consider a money belt. Pack light The lighter your load, the lesser your backache. Cross-pack when travelling as a couple Place clothes for each of you in both suitcases. If one suitcase gets lost, you’ll both still have something to wear. carry meds with you in their original containers Medication may be difficult to replace in a foreign land if luggage is lost. Keep pills in their original vials. Diabetics who must carry syringes should consider bringing a note from their physician. Bring essential extras Bring backup batteries that fit your unique hearing aid. A spare set of spectacles is a good idea in case of loss or breakage. Pack your denture container for sanitary storage. Purchase truly portable luggage Wheeled luggage is a senior’s best friend. A sturdy strap on the luggage can also secure your jacket and keep you from dropping it in crowds. Do not keep valuables in pockets, however. Be prepared for all weather Wear comfortable shoes, and bring along a hat, sunscreen and umbrella. Book the right rooms and transportation Book your hotel room in locations with disability accessibility. Ask about age restrictions for car rentals. Some countries will not rent vehicles to travellers as young as 70. Pack plenty of patience Security regulations have tightened. Be prepared for extended waits at airports and ports. A book, crossword or tablet can help with boredom.

When Is It
Time to Move? Selling your family house is a big decision. Here’s what to consider when it comes to the next place you’ll call home by Dawn Ritchie
W
hen that garden that was once your greatest joy is suddenly your worst backache, it may be time for a housing shift. Leaving your long-time home behind is a stark reality of aging. Few are able to manage the responsibilities of a large household as they hit their mature years. Preparing mentally and financially for the inevitable is a wise part of good life planning. Downsizing has its perks. There’s more money in the bank, a surplus in your retirement fund, less work around the house and sensible age-appropriate housing to ease the rigours of daily life. But there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to real estate choices for seniors, says Lorne Downey, a former Tarion builder turned realtor for Coldwell Banker Ronan Realty Brokerage in Alliston. “There are young seniors and older seniors,” he says. “Both have different needs.”
The condo bungalow Younger seniors, freshly retired, may want to rid themselves of lawn duties and downsize to maintenance-free one-level living. Condo bungalow communities are increasingly popular, Downey says, because they offer all-inclusive maintenance plans. Someone else is cutting the lawn, washing the windows, replacing the roof or shovelling the snow. This offers the freedom to take off at a moment’s notice for a cruise, head out west or spend winters in a warmer climate. “You lock up and go,” he says.
others may put a time limit on use to ensure the granny suite doesn’t turn into a rental property.
Residential living Moving into a retirement residence offers carefree meals and no household chores, and provides an instant community with greater opportunities for socializing. Retirement facilities also provide exercise, health and creative classes, depending on the residence. Some have crafting rooms and carpentry workshops where seniors can keep their skills sharp.
The granny suite
Design and build
Older seniors generally want to move closer to family and grandchildren, and building granny suites in their children’s homes is a new trend. “Each township has different rules about that,” Downey says. Before modifying, it’s important to confirm it’s a legal renovation. Some townships will allow them, but
Designing the retirement home of your dreams presents challenges. Finding land is the first hurdle, Downey says. Most seniors want to be closer to town, but developers have already snapped up those lots. Buying a country lot will most likely be the only option, taking you farther away from all the action. Aside from the isolation of living in the
24 | GoodLife • South Simcoe Edition Summer 2017
**GL-SS SMMR 2017.indd 24
2017-06-09 10:25 AM
countryside, all the maintenance remains your responsibility. There are also development fees to consider that could run in the tens of thousands of dollars. After that, you must put in a driveway, hydro, septic and a well all before laying the foundation. Downey advises retirees who are building to design for a minimum of three bedrooms. When it comes time to sell, if there are only two bedrooms, they have reduced their buyer’s market to a mere seven to eight per cent. On the flip side, 70 to 80 per cent of buyers are seeking three bedrooms or more. Just turn that extra sleeping space into a place for guests or your hobby room.
Renting Moving from an owned property to a rented space has pros and cons, but the advantages of no longer having the responsibility and costs of repairs and upkeep may suit your budget. Rents are never static, however, so if your budget is tight, be prepared for future moves to lower-priced units as rents increase.
Hiring a realtor According to Downey, hiring a mature realtor who not only knows the market but understands a senior’s unique needs and fears is crucial. “Seniors have a different set of worries than young families,” he says. “And they are looking for a different level of service. Older seniors have gone through the Depression and have distinct perspectives on value.”
Getting ready to sell The choice to sell always comes down to selling “as is” or doing upgrades. Downey recommends that buyers always get an inspection and that sellers take the time to do a few upgrades and get rid of that old carpeting. Dated tile, flooring and banisters can bring the sale value down. For around $5,000 in upgrades, you can reap $15,000 to $30,000 more in your selling price, he says. When Downey tours a senior’s home, he always provides the owners with a list of upgrades that will deliver the most bang for the buck. Make sure your realtor will do the same. Financial Security The Changing Landscape for Seniors By Daw n Ritchie

inancial adviser Debbie Hudson reports that the biggest fear she hears from seniors today is, “Am I going to be okay? Will I run out of money?” Financial markets have evolved and the savings practices of the past no longer keep step with today’s inflation. “Seniors have been pushed out of their comfort zones because interest rates are low,” Hudson says, “so, they have to look to conservative investments instead of GICs.”

Planning is crucial Consolidation of holdings, income-generating investments and getting financial assistance from advisers are the growing trends for seniors as they move into their retirement years. The complexity of the tax code, low interest rates, clawbacks on pension income and new probate tax laws make creating a financial plan a must. The basis of that plan lies in four pillars of finance that work hand in hand to manage income and create tax efficiency, which means more cash in seniors’ pockets.
1. INVESTMENT PLANNING Hudson, vice-president and investment adviser for TD Wealth Private Investment Advice, assures seniors that there’s always something that can be done to improve their financial health. It starts with determining their goals for retirement. Next, a review of assets, debt, liabilities and ongoing expenses informs decisions. “The sooner you know, the better,” Hudson says, because many seniors are asset rich (owning large homes) but income poor. “It’s all a choice on where they are spending their money. Is it heat and hydro? Can they go on trips while they’re still healthy? Everything’s a choice.” For seniors, investment risk tolerance should be lower. Investments with growth opportunities and an ability to pull an income stream are advantageous. But mortgaging a home to draw out money to invest is a risky game. One must always calculate the borrowing rate and the rate of profit-making to determine what’s appropriate. Better to downsize and invest the profits from that sale. In Hudson’s experience, most seniors want to live off of the profits and not touch the capital. “It’s very complex,” she says, “which is why an adviser is a necessity today. We need to look at all areas of their finances to get the best outcome. A balanced portfolio is important.”
2. TAX PLANNING For tax planning, Hudson recommends “defer, deduct and divide.” Deferring taxes until the impact is lessened, maximizing every possible deduction available to seniors and dividing income between spouses can significantly reduce your tax bill.
PLANNING IS CRUCIAL
Consolidation of holdings, income-generating investments and getting financial assistance from advisers are the growing trends for seniors as they move into their retirement years.
PENSION INCOME
RETIREMENT PLANNING
Single or double pension plans? How do they play into the bigger picture?
?
RRSPS/RRIFS
Taking money from RRSPs and converting it to a RRIF (Registered Retirement Income Fund) is just one way to create an income stream with tax efficiency.
REVIEW ASSESTS/DEBT
Are you asset rich and income poor? What is your investment risk tolerance? Living off profits leaving the capital to grow.
LONG TERM CARE
Every senior has a different set of circumstances and goals, There is no cookie-cutter plan.
Few can survive on pension income alone these days, and creating an income stream from investments is one answer.
UNEXPECTED EXPENSES
Planning for the unexpected. Children are now draining their senior parents’ nest eggs.
ENTERTAINMENT
The cost of entertainment and other incidentals can add up very fast. Is there enough in the monthy budget to continue enjoying, or is it time to consolidate and cancel some notso-important items?
ESTATE PLANNING
Having your will reviewed by an adviser will make clear the tax implications of capital gains and benefits of joint ownership.
The basis of that plan lies in four pillars of finance that work hand in hand to manage income and create tax efficiency, which means more cash in seniors’ pockets. • INVESTMENT PLANNING • TAX PLANNING • RETIREMENT PLANNING • ESTATE PLANNING

Income splitting shifts income from one spouse in a higher tax bracket to the other in a lower bracket to decrease overall tax liability. Weighing each aspect of the four pillars and making creative choices can fight clawbacks from the government on pension income if you earn too much. Even the timing of a move can impact your tax bill.
Fine Dining in a Casual Atmosphere
3. RETIREMENT PLANNING Few can survive on pension income alone these days, and creating an income stream from investments is one answer. Taking money from RRSPs and converting it to a RRIF (Registered Retirement Income Fund) is just one way to create an income stream with tax efficiency. Another is downsizing and investing the profits from the sale in income-generating investment portfolios. Living in a smaller home also decreases maintenance costs and propertytax burdens. “Every senior has a different set of circumstances and goals,” Hudson says. “There is no cookie-cutter plan.”
ADULT DAY PROGRAMS
The Whistle Stop
”A second set of eyes checking your estate plan ensures you pass your wealth on to those you wish and keep it out of government hands“
Another problem unique to this time is the reality that children are now draining their senior parents’ nest eggs. It’s an issue Hudson is seeing more of. “Communication is key with the family,” she says. “What they want to do with their money, that’s still their choice, but sometimes they use my advice to help broach the conversation. ‘I saw an adviser. We’re going to run out of money. We can’t do this anymore.’”
4. ESTATE PLANNING Finally, having your will reviewed by an adviser will make clear the tax implications of capital gains and benefits of joint ownership. How assets are registered is crucial when it comes to probate laws. A second set of eyes checking your estate plan ensures that you pass your wealth on to those you wish, family, friends or charities, and keep it out of government hands.

1. Keep a list Pharmacist Rochele Vinluan of Tottenham Pharmasave recommends keeping a list of all of the medications you’re prescribed both on your person and at home. In the event of an emergency or injury, healthcare providers will know immediately what they can and cannot administer. 2. Get a consultation for each new prescription Always get a free consultation with your pharmacist for each new drug prescribed. Some medications require refrigeration; others need to be taken with food. Older adults also metabolize drugs differently, so it’s important to discuss any foods you are taking with your medication. Alcohol and some foods, such as grapefruits, are known to increase the potency of some statins. Be mindful of overindulging on dark green leafy vegetables and teas if you are on Warfarin. “Or if a patient has too much potassium,” Vinluan says, “they might want to hold off on bananas for a while.”
3. Avoid interactions Tell your pharmacist about all of the medications you are on. That includes over-thecounter drugs, herbs, vitamins and natural supplements. It's a common misconception that natural supplements are harmless, but some mimic what prescriptions do. “I regularly hear, ‘I saw this on TV and it says I will lose weight,’” Vinluan says. “I ask, ‘What’s the name of it and what is in it?’ so we can check for interactions. People think because a product says it’s natural, it’s safe. But many drugs are developed and synthesized from observed effects from natural products. White willow bark, for instance, is closely related to Aspirin. You have to be careful if you are on a blood thinner.” 4. Report side effects immediately Report any side effects from medications to your physician and your pharmacist right away. Dosing, intolerance or drug interactions may be the cause. Pharmacists will contact your physician to discuss changes in dosing.

5. Ask for blister packs Compliance packaging is an excellent new option for seniors. Your pharmacist will organize your medications by time and day, and dispense them in a clearly marked blister pack. This will help you or a caregiver keep track of whether you’ve missed a dose.
6. Keep medications in their dispensed containers when you travel Never remove medications from their containers or put them in different bottles. When travelling, if you need only a few tablets, ask your pharmacist to print out a label for a smaller vial. It is illegal to possess pre-
Compliance packaging, with medications organized by time and day, is an excellent new option for seniors
scription drugs that have not been prescribed for you. “I have gotten a call from a customs officer asking, ‘What is this drug? What’s it for? What does it look like?’” Vinluan says. 7. Ask for additional labelling Prescription names can get confusing, especially if you are on several medications. Ask your pharmacist to add the usage for the drug right on the label: blood pressure, inflammation, pain medication and so on. 8. Stick to one pharmacy Pick a pharmacy you like and stick to it. Pharmacies keep records of all the medications you are on and can catch any interactions that might occur. They also track whether prescriptions are being filled in time or not, so should a doctor increase a dosage because the medication is not working, the pharmacist can inform the doctor that the prescription was not being filled at the correct times. 9. Ask about brand medication programs Generic medications are normally covered for seniors by provincial plans, but for some patients, generics have fillers that produce adverse or allergic reactions. Ask your pharmacist about the free programs available from manufacturers that may subsidize brand medications. 10. Dispose of medications safely Never flush unused or expired drugs down the toilet. They end up in our water source. The same goes for disposing of sharps (syringes, lancets, pen needles, etc.) and medications in the trash — they endanger city workers and end up in landfills. Drugs in landfills eventually find their way into groundwater. Take unused medications and sharps to your pharmacy for proper disposal.

Sound Advice Hearing loss means more than a quieter world — it can have a serious impact on your health and ability to lead an active lifestyle by Dawn Ritchie
Now Hear This Thanks to the technology boom, cutting-edge advancements have been made in hearing aids. Here’s an overview.
Hearing Aid Models: It’s no longer one size fits all. Aids come in various configurations and can reside either inside the ear canal or outside. Many hearing aids are completely invisible to the eye. Bluetooth Technology: Newer hearing aids are equipped with Bluetooth technology that allows users to link directly to Bluetooth-enabled devices like cellphones, televisions, MP3 players and computers.
W
hile most seniors get eyeglasses as their sight declines, many put off getting a hearing aid. Yet studies show that seniors with hearing loss have a threefold risk of falling, experience a decline in cognitive functioning and are more prone to depression. “People will develop hearing loss regardless of who they are as they age,” says Diane WebberHamilton, a doctor of audiology working with InTouch Hearing. “But people want to age gracefully, and senior health is a big thing now because people are living longer.” Which is why a hearing assessment should be a part of every senior’s healthcare schedule.
Remote Controls: There’s no need to remove a hearing aid and fiddle with minuscule controls for adjustments anymore. Remote controllers put the power in your pocket to control volume, programs and other settings. Settings can be changed to fit the environment you’re in, a quiet room or noisy restaurants, for instance. It’s all under your command at the push of a button.
TeleHealth: This emerging technology will be a godsend for clients who are unable to leave home for an office visit. Adjustments to hearing aids can now be made over the phone by a trained audiologist, all from the comfort of your home.

Sensory fitness Webber-Hamilton advises seniors to treat their brain as a muscle. People understand the value of physical exercise to increase flexibility and stay in shape, but the brain needs exercise too, and part of that is getting the information that is around you into the brain in the first place. “Your sensory systems are just there to pick up the information for your brain to process,” Webber-Hamilton says. “If you have hearing loss, then the brain can’t do its job properly.” It must spend additional time trying to decipher what was said before it can even begin to process the information and have you respond appropriately. If there’s a constant delay, seniors fall behind, lose relationships and the enjoyment of life or, worse, miss important cues and warnings. Hearing aids help to get that vital sensory data flowing again, which in turn assists in preserving speech ability, keeps seniors in the loop and potentially diminishes “brain shrinkage.” Causes of hearing loss There are many causes of hearing loss in addition to routine aging, including head injury, exposure to loud noises and even smoking. “Hearing systems have the smallest bones in the body,” Webber-Hamilton says. “You need healthy blood to make things work properly and that means getting enough oxygen into the blood. Smokers have a 70 per cent higher risk of hearing loss.” Perhaps that’s why the ear has been referred to as the “window to the heart,” because it is so intensely impacted by inadequate blood flow. Studies show that diseases now associated with hearing loss include hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney problems and diabetes. In fact, diabetics are twice as likely to have hearing loss. “Diabetes affects the fluids in the body,” Webber-Hamilton says, “which puts diabetics at greater risk for hearing loss.” Frank Lin, otologist and epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Medicine, says new studies have now linked hearing loss to memory loss and dementia — all key reasons to ensure your hearing is at its optimum. Healthy ears “Maintaining ear health begins with cleanliness,” Webber-Hamilton says. She recommends regular visits to an audiologist to have ear canals cleared of wax and hearing aids cleaned. “People in their 70s have the greatest ear wax production,” she says. “Wax buildup inhibits hearing and is bad for hearing aids.”

Getting involved Whether organizing or participating, here are ways to join in.
Volunteer steering committee A steering committee of 10 volunteer seniors will design, plan and organize the workshops. Everyone is invited to bring ideas to the table. Meetings will be held at Contact Community Services’ main office at 39 Victoria Street East in Alliston, starting at the end of June.

The

Getting involved by volunteering not only helps others, but is good for you, too By D aw n Ritchie
S
taying active and remaining social during your retirement years is like drinking an elixir from the fountain of youth. It helps to keep you young and moving, and brightens the spirits. Volunteering is one of the more rewarding experiences many seniors enjoy. Contributing not only gives you a sense of well-being and enriches your life, it also gets you active and out of the house.
Your local resource centre Contact Community Services in Alliston is a not-for-profit charity with a 40-year history of serving the South Simcoe community. Contact operates a volunteer centre, runs the bustling Clothes Line Thrift Store in Alliston (which keeps 30 senior volunteers busy) and offers housing assistance, an employment centre and community information.
Seniors helping seniors Contact’s latest program, supported by the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, is the Seniors Wellness Program. Designed and run by seniors for seniors, this program runs a series of workshops that will improve overall quality of life through fun and exciting activities. “Last year’s program focused on crafting using recycled materials,” Melisa Fox, Contact’s community engagement coordinator, says. Materials for the workshops were donated by the centre’s own Clothes Line Thrift Store, making the program sustainable. “We made wind chimes out of cutlery and wreaths with coat hangers,” Fox says. “Seniors brought in pictures of loved ones and we decorated picture frames.”
Workshop leaders and participants Workshop leaders and participants will put the plans into action. Workshops begin in late August and will be held in Alliston, Beeton and Bradford seniors’ apartment buildings.
How often? Workshops will be held once a month from August to March, concluding in a final celebratory event. Last year, the closing event included prizes, bingo and pizza. And the best part is that it’s all free.
Why volunteer? These life-affirming workshops are a free program for low- to moderateincome seniors with limited access to recreational activities. It’s a vital resource for those who couldn’t otherwise afford the participation fees for these experiences. You’ll be providing a valuable service, but you’re not just giving back, you’re also on the receiving end!
You will: • Learn a variety of new skills • Empower yourself by bringing your ideas to the table • Share your skills by planning the workshops • Reduce any feeling of isolation • Create new friendships • Enjoy a healthier lifestyle through exercise and better nutrition • Make a solid contribution to your community.

seniors | Funeral Planning
Preplanning
your Funeral Four Steps to Peace of Mind By Dawn Ritchie
1
STEP ONE Meet with a funeral director •
P
replanning your own funeral can be one of the most thoughtful things you can do for your loved ones, says John Earle, owner of W. John Thomas Funeral Home in Alliston. When the time comes, the burden and stress on family is greatly diminished, allowing them to focus instead on the grieving process and business of settling the estate. “The hardest step is to pick up the phone and walk through the door,” Earle says. “But once people have done that, they quickly realize we’re here to help and can provide advice and suggestions. There is no dark cloud at that point. That’s when you can make good choices. Many are surprised that it’s a positive experience.”

STEP TWO Lock in your costs now •
A big advantage to arranging your own funeral is the opportunity to prepay and lock in the cost. If you move to a new location later, the plan is transferrable to another funeral home anywhere across Canada, or even to another country. “Each detail is your decision, made when you are sound and confident,” Earle says. “It’s peace of mind for the family, knowing that everything is done the way Mom or Dad wanted.”
A Celebration of a Life Lived Funerals are increasingly becoming personalized and funeral homes are moving with the times to remain flexible to each family’s needs, culture, traditions and faith. A new trend is the “Celebration of Life,” which includes catered events held right at the funeral home following the service. The W. John Thomas Funeral Home in Alliston, for example, has catered a luncheon for 400 with bar service, says owner John Earle. An open mic was set up for loved ones to share stories of the deceased. With emotions often highly charged during these transitions in life, celebrating the life lived is helpful for the grieving.
3
STEP THREE Keep a life and death folder •
Preparing a life and death folder will alleviate the stress for your heirs in the settling of your estate and make the burial process more efficient. Family and friends are not always thinking clearly when they are in the grieving process. By creating a file of estate and service documents and personal mementos, you remove a desperate search for needed items. Be sure to let a family member know where this file is kept. Your documents: The file should hold important financial records, such as your bank accounts, will, insurance policies, Social Insurance Number, pension plans, deeds to properties, car ownership and any prepaid arrangements for your funeral or burial. Your life: The file is also the roadmap to your life’s journey and personal achievements. This is where you share your story. Provide information on your life, career, education, military service, hobbies, travels, achievements and awards. Anything from your charitable work to what you believe and care about to the people you loved. Funny stories from your life will bring comfort to your loved ones and assist clergy or the person delivering the eulogy in expressing the bigger picture of the life you lived. Even simple comments such as “Joseph enjoyed the cottage and fishing” are invaluable in remembering a life.

STEP FOUR Purchase a plan if you travel •
Part of the enjoyment of retirement is travelling, but preparedness for foreign travel should include more than just a healthcare travel policy. A repatriation policy (returning the remains to Canada) should also be part of your protection package. “It happens every year,” Earle says. “It can be very stressful if a wife loses her husband on a golf course in Florida and doesn’t know what to do.” Not only are travelling companions in shock and sudden grief, but arrangements also need to be made to repatriate the deceased. Costs can be exorbitant. From Australia, it could run as high as $20,000. A travel plan policy protects travellers from those excessive expenses for a one-time life payment that can often be as low as $500. “The funeral home handles everything,” Earle says. “It’s all free.” Want to find out more? W. John Thomas Funeral Home is hosting a funeral planning and organizaing workshop on Sept. 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. See thomasfuneralhome.ca for details.

What’s It Like to Live in an
Active Adult Community? An inside look at Alliston’s Briar Hill By Dawn Ritchie Photography by Mike Guilbault
T
he roadways are pristine and debris-free; the yards, manicured and lush; the landscape, rolling and bucolic. The Briar Hill Active Adult Lifestyle Community is so perfect, in fact, that many say it reminds them of the wholesome neighbourhood depicted in the movie Pleasantville. The ever-growing site plan of the sprawling Alliston development offers an assortment of living styles, including two-bedroom bungalows with lofts, townhomes, semis and condominium apartments, for active adults. And the mission statement is manifest: Buying here means maintenance-free resort-style living. Enter a typical semi-detached home and the immense kitchen with granite-topped island greets you immediately. The backsplash is glistening tile. The appliances are spotless stainless steel. It is a space designed for entertaining, and for good reason: Socializing is de rigueur at Briar Hill. The endless activities at the residents’ community centre set the table for budding new friendships that form the many-faceted social circles — from bridge groups to fitness fans to golfing buddies. And alliances regularly spill over into house gatherings.
All homes inside the newest development phase are light-filled and cheery, with high coffered ceilings and dining rooms spacious enough for leisurely meals at harvest tables. Living rooms sport gas fireplaces to cozy up to. Walkouts to private decks await quiet time, and the residences even contain a separate office for those working from home. As an adult community, a main-floor master is a must, but there’s also a roomy lower-level bedroom with large windows and a second full bath for guests. Some residents use it for family visitors, others as their hobby room. There’s also a huge recreation room with a fireplace and a cold cellar for diehard food preservationists — a pastime many seniors enjoy after hitting the local farmers’ markets. Don’t feel like cooking? There’s no need to even leave the community. The Nottawasaga Resort offers both fine dining and classic culinary indulgences, including elegant dining in the Mahogany Room, a buffet or Sunday brunch in the Riverview Room and even private dining for intimate parties at La Tavola del Padrone. Retirement never looked so good!

The Right Move A new community meant a brand new chapter for Bryan and Lesley Mills
“I
was looking for a house and found Shangri-La,” retired businessman Bryan Mills says of his move to Briar Hill, an active adult lifestyle community that lies next to the Nottawasaga Inn Resort complex. Mills, who originally lived and worked in Toronto, had sold his business in 2000 and retired to his Horseshoe Valley home with his wife, Lesley. But as the years passed and he slid into his late 60s, he found property maintenance taxing. “There were too many leaves in the fall and too much snow in the winter,” Mills says. “My wife and I decided we wanted to move closer to the city and to our children again, and Briar Hill fit the bill.” Ten years later, Mills is even more convinced it was the right move. He no longer struggles with landscaping or needs to cover big-ticket items like roof or deck replacement
Entering a New Phase A community where the lost are found again
C
indy Soares’ move to Briar Hill, an adult active lifestyle community in Alliston, came a year after the death of her husband from cancer in 2014. This after being packaged out of her long-time job. It’s a scenario common for many in middle age. What follows is a marked decrease in income, a desperate search for a new job in a market unfriendly to mature talents and then the wrenching expenses and endless maintenance of a home. “I thought it was too early to move into a community,” says Soares, who still had two children living with her. But when one left for college in England, and the chores around the house mounted, she decided to make the leap. The change brought great relief. “I have 10 women on my street who have all lost
— it’s all taken care of. Instead, he spends time with friends, playing chess and attending dances, house parties and the concerts all available at Briar Hill. He even occasionally hits a golf ball or two on the Nottawasaga Inn Resort championship course. “There’s so much to do here,” Mills says. “We have our own ravine house looking out at a beautiful backyard that overlooks a river. We’re completely in nature and there’s tons of activities, walking trails, swimming and a whirlpool.” With so much to enjoy, it’s no wonder residents don’t talk much about their former working lives. “They don’t care what car you drive or how much money you’ve got. No one is showing off or trying to impress others,” Mills says. “You’re accepted as one of the gang, and that’s pretty important.” husbands. We get together every month, go for dinner. It’s like our therapy,” she says. “It’s wonderful. I wouldn’t have had that in a subdivision.” While most Briar Hill residents are empty nesters, Soares has one child still at home. “It’s been a little isolating for him,” she admits, since these quiet streets are not filled with teenagers in the evening. “But he’s off to school next year and that’ll be better for him.” Soares’ father, Campbell Roylance, was already living in Briar Hill and loving the low-maintenance lifestyle: the windows are washed for you; the grass is seeded, cut and watered; the roads are plowed. But there are adjustments, too, mostly dealing with condominium rules and restrictions that ensure the community has a certain look. “You get over it pretty quickly,” Roylance says. “You realize all those DIY things are in the past. You’ve done that. Now you can do other things.” Roylance, a former engineer, moved to Briar Hill with his wife in 1999. They lived happily in one section of the development until his wife passed away in 2010. Like his daughter, Roylance hung on for a year in the
Briar Hill has a dedicated community centre that’s run by the residents and keeps everyone busy with everything from card playing and yoga to painting and movies in the lounge. Recently, the residents enjoyed a comedy night with Yuk Yuks and the first of their quarterly concert series, which featured a salute to Canadian musical icons as a part of the Canada 150 celebrations. “It was a tremendous hit,” Mills reports. “[Singer] Leisa Way and her band performed songs from Shania Twain to Paul Anka and Gordon Lightfoot.” Next up on the schedule is a Beatles tribute band — and it’s all right on the property. “We have an amazing social group that arranges special events for us, and anyone can start an activity,” says Mills, who himself launched a chess club. “I know a resident who was single, so she started a group for other singles. Another couple who bought a home here were invited to three parties and they hadn’t even moved in yet.” Mills recommends adult lifestyle community living so highly that he’s started a website to help others find their little piece of Shangri-La, too. Find it at adultlifestylecommunities.ca. same home, then decided it was time for a change. He moved a few streets away into the Green Briar section, the first phase built in this community. “You live here long enough and it becomes you,” he says. “You feel like you belong. Neighbours know each other. It’s an old-fashioned neighbourhood.” In 2015, Roylance made his third move within the community, this time to the Palisades condominium apartments. “Each phase of the development has its own tenor,” he says. “The new Vistas section is where the younger people are. Briar Hill has the mid-range, and the Palisades condominium apartments have the older demographic. Every phase brings in a new group.” Soares, who now works in the sales office, notes that most new Briar Hill sales are going to people in their 50s and early 60s. “A lot of people are getting in now while they’re still working,” she says. “And many are working from home.” For Roylance, the best part of living in this community is never having to leave his friendship base. He enjoys golf and is passionate about his peer learning group that meets weekly for stimulating discussions on a variety of topics. “It’s very safe and very social,” he says. “There’s no downside.”

IntergeneratIonal Wealth PlannIng As I have written in the Herald earlier this year and in past years there are specific strategies you can employ in order to maximize the value of your estate and to ensure its smooth transition to your intended heirs. Naming both primary beneficiaries and secondary beneficiaries on your RRSPS/RRIFS; naming your spouse as successor holder and your children (or other intended recipients) beneficiaries on your TFSAs; employing segregated funds with named beneficiaries for monies which are in neither of the aforementioned vehicles; and purchasing joint and last to die life insurance policies, are just a few of such strategies. But employing the above is insufficient in order to ensure your hard earned legacy continues to grow after you have gone.
A recent study of over 5500 Millennials (defined as young adults born between 1983 and 1995) conducted by the world’s leading center for Financial Literacy Research and Policy at George Washington University shows that only 24% of this Millennial group demonstrates even BASIC financial literacy. In fact, amongst the overall adult population, this age group has the lowest level of financial literacy. In addition, while the majority of them are not happy with their financial situation and most of them have at least one source of long-term debt, only 27% of them seek financial help! They are a high impact generation poised to shape the global economy in new and significant ways but their knowledge deficit could prove disastrous for them, the economy and society. You may ask what this has to do with intergenerational wealth planning?
I offer all my clients a series of meetings with their children so I can not only introduce myself as their parents’ advisor but teach the children the basics of financial planning. This would include: budgeting and cash-flow planning; effectively managing short and long-term debt; an explanation of the various kinds of investments and the pros and cons of each; the various kinds of vehicles that those investments can go in and the pros and cons of each; tax planning; insurance planning and estate planning. This meeting can serve the dual purpose of improving the financial literacy of the children while paving the way for the parents and children to have a discussion about what will happen when the parents die. I am there to provide coaching and guidance with that discussion. I decided to do this after hearing many stories and witnessing directly for myself the disastrous results of the
children being left in the dark about the nature of their parent’s estate and then scrambling to make sense of all the complexity once the parents have passed. Compounding this was often a lack of financial knowledge of the children. By ensuring your children and other heirs are financially knowledgeable in general and understand your estate in particular (only if you are comfortable with this) your legacy can grow long after you are gone. In so doing you are also helping shape the future global economy! Please call us today if you would like a complimentary 90 minute consultation to see how any of these points apply to YOU!

Mown Over
When warmer days finally arrive, and you want nothing more than to be out enjoying them, don’t you wish your lawn could just cut itself? Newsflash: It can. Meet the Automower, the first robotic lawn mower, capable of working around the clock, day in and day out. Think of it as a Roomba for lawns. Launched by Husqvarna in 1995, the quiet, battery-operated Automower continuously cuts grass within boundaries you decide, and can handle small, simple lawns or large, complex properties — with no harmful exhaust emissions. There’s even an app so you can track the Automower wherever you are. And when its battery is low, it automatically returns to its charging station. Ranging from 18 to 25 pounds, the Automower comes in two sizes: the 315, for up to 1/3 acre, and the 450X, for up to 1¼ acres. Pricing starts at $2,199.99. For more information, go to husqvarna.ca.

Modern — Meets —
From its feng shui entrance to the viewmaximizing great room, this Duntroon home marries the best of drama and style By Dawn Ritchie | Photography by Mike GuilbaUlt
J
ason McLean of Method Contracting directs each of his builds with a theatrical bravura. So, when it came to creating his own home on a 4.8-acre spread in Duntroon, his approach was no different. The prologue to this production is an expertly staged entryway, separated from the great room by a sleek floating wall. “It’s feng shui,” McLean says. And then the real drama begins. In front of the wall, an oversized antique school bench from the 1800s awaits visitors. It’s the spot to shrug off coats and boots. “We found [the bench] at an antique shop in Collingwood,” he says. It was a 10th anniversary gift to his wife, Allison. Above it hangs a lively piece of modern art,
deliberately chosen to deliver the theme of the residence — modern meets rustic. Helping McLean bring that theme to life was architectural technologist Pam Farrow. “We’ve done seven homes with Pam,” McLean says. “She gets it.” He and Farrow tend to have three or four site meetings where they discuss flow, his visions on capturing views and the lifestyle routines that will affect the design of the home. “How the kids come in from school, where you dump your hockey equipment and so on,” McLean says. “With Pam, it’s very quick. She’s 80 to 85 per cent there on the first drawings. Extremely talented. We do some tweaks, elaborate on what we want and she always delivers.”

breathtaking views That delivery is evident with a glance to the left at the dazzling modern kitchen, designed for visual impact. The work of Mckee Kitchens, it features glossy grey and walnut cabinetry and black industrial statement pendants above the Corian-topped waterfall island. Moving into the great room, you are met with a breathtaking view of Georgian Bay, framed by a proscenium of floor-to-ceiling, triple-glazed, German-engineered windows. The space is a vision of utility, with a true conversation pit complete with throws, cushy pillows and side tables all within reach. The furnishings are a mix of mid-century modern and rustic. A magnificent Napoleon NZ8000 woodburning fireplace has a guillotine door that rolls up invisibly into the wall. The firebox is ensconced within a polished limestone surround that stretches to the vaulted barnbeamed ceiling, inset with 5¼ tongue-ingroove pine board. And while McLean’s attention falls to the home’s many structural achievements — his state-of-the-art mechanical room, reverse osmosis water system, acoustic sound batting insulation, standing seam steel roof, high-energy-efficiency heating system, Cape Cod siding and not a stitch of MDF anywhere — his wife’s interests lean toward the interior design elements. “I build them,” McLean says. “She makes them pretty.”

Throughout the house, the walls are minimally adorned with art, instead calling attention to the home’s beautiful views. The couple also has a prefernce for crisp, clean and neutral decor with pops of colour.
“We want to get people out of the city and into the country,” McLean says. “ Everyone wants those big panoramic views, but they’re hard to come by” 54 | GoodLife • South Simcoe Edition Summer 2017

Residential New & Re-Roofs of red, for example, is obeyed in this home. Cushions, artwork, occasional chairs and even a vanity in the powder room all sport a crimson hue. The walls are minimally adorned with art, leaving a blank canvas that forces the eyes instead to the view. There’s so much light flooding in from the windows, that McLean decided to paint the walls a classic grey. “Lighting is a big thing,” he says. “You have so much brightness in there, you don’t want it to be too stark.” Returning to the kitchen, you begin to truly appreciate the functionality of the space. Appliances include a Pro Line KitchenAid refrigerator and eight-burner Wolf stove. A set of red lounging chairs in front of the island enlivens the area. As much as it’s a show kitchen, it is also for true cooking. The high-gloss cabinetry sports a scratch-resistant coating. The uppers open from below and all hinges are self-closing. Massive double free-standing pantries on the far wall are separated by a workstation that seats two. There’s even a cozy ottoman by the window. “I wanted a workstation for my kids so I can monitor them doing homework while preparing dinner,” McLean says. “And sometimes I want to be around my family, so I’ll do some paperwork there, away from the water.”
Made for family The kitchen island was extended to include a walnut breakfast bar that comfortably seats this family of four. “It’s intimate and cozy,” McLean says. And this is where the family eats most of their meals. The larger live-edge walnut dining table, built by Adam Garbutt of AG Designs, is reserved for entertaining. The main-floor master holds another floating wall that divides the sleeping quarters from the industrial-styled closets, and allows the bed to sit in the centre of the room, taking advantage of the countryside views. The spa-inspired ensuite offers similar views. Here, a soaker tub and walk-in shower stall with a massive rain showerhead eases all stresses. All fixtures are Riobel. The south-facing den also on the main floor is used more as a study room. It has a lower ceiling for intimacy. An old drafting table with architectural legs was a thrift store find, says McLean, who preserved it by topping it with tempered glass, secured with two steel rods on either side.

The overall vision The lower level, all above grade, is where the boys’ bedrooms and guestroom reside, as well as a crafting space and games area. The heated floors are polished concrete, and a second wood-burning fireplace cozies up the evenings. This is where the family tumbles together as the day wanes. “We play pool, arcade games, and set up the racetrack,” McLean says. “It’s nice to bundle up with a hot fire and chill out in a different room.” It’s the perfect final scene to McLean’s theatrical production, but the epilogue takes us outside the main residence. When speculating on land purchases, McLean has a very strict criterion. “It has to have a view or waterfront — open spaces,” he says. “We get people out of the city to the country. Everyone wants those big panoramic views, but they’re hard to come by.” Out on his own land, apart from the attached two-car garage, McLean has an additional three-car detached garage for boats, trailers, motorcycles and his collectibles. It is the mother of all man caves, complete with a workshop, fitness room, transom windows and a wood stove for that rustic feel. The brief journey to it is scenic, with long views to Collingwood’s beautiful harbour. And that is what McLean believes truly brings the curtain down.
A floating wall in the master bedroom divides the sleeping area fom the industrial-styled closets, and allows the bed to be positioned for maximum views. The spa-inspired ensuite with soaker tub offers a similar outlook on the property.
McLean’s additional three-car garage holds boats, trailers, motorcycles and collectibles. The mother of all man caves, it boast a workshop, fitness room, wood stove and transom windows.

food & drink Fresh Outlook Slap on the sunscreen, get your small bills ready and grab your reusable bags — it’s farmers’ market season! They’re the spots to hit for local, seasonal and super-fresh fruits and vegetables. You can taste the difference, says Robert Chorney, executive director of Farmers’ Markets Ontario. “Fruits and vegetables are harvested fresh from the farm and sold directly to the consumer at the market within a few days.” Contrast that with store-bought produce, which is typically picked a week to 10 days before it lands on shelves.
Taste is just one benefit, of course. Farmers’ markets put money into the local economy, have a reduced carbon footprint and give you an opportunity to chat with the folks who grow your food. And along with featuring the best that Mother Nature has to offer, the markets offer an abundance of other goodies — everything from honey and preserves to baked goods and meats, and more. or the past three years, Kate Centracchio has been delighting customers with her artfully decorated custom cakes. “I love making people happy with creative baking, says the Alliston baker who owns and operates CupKates and Kate in Nobleton. Along with her artistic custom cakes, Centracchio is known for her special occasion confections such as cake pops, hand-decorated sugar cookies, cupcakes, chocolatecovered Oreos, chocolate-covered pretzels and more.

For the Canada 150 cover, Centracchio baked a layer cake and scraped away some of the icing for an on-trend seminaked cake. She adorned it with strawberries and fresh roses for a summery yet rustic look.
With such a sweet resumé, Centracchio was our natural choice to create a special cake for this issue’s cover to help celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. But beyond commissioning a celebratory creation, we also dished with the 29-year-old local baker about her burgeoning business. What led you to make custom cakes? A few years ago, I started making creative birthday cakes for family and friends. Word got out, and before long I started getting requests to make custom cakes from neighbours and co-workers. After that, it just snowballed. My artistic hobby turned into a small business. Are you a trained baker? I’m completely self-taught, but I have a creative background. I was a makeup artist and teacher and I’m also an early childhood educator, and you need to be creative when working in a kindergarten class. I’ve been an avid baker for years, and was always that person who brought something sweet to parties and get-togethers. What’s trending in custom cakes? The biggest trend is the naked or semi-naked cake. This is when the icing gets scraped off and the cakes are decorated with fresh fruit and flowers. It’s an exposed, rustic look. The Canada Day cake that I made for the GoodLife cover is a semi-naked cake. Chocolate ganache drip cakes are also very trendy right now. They feature drippy chocolate icing and are usually piled high with edible delights such as cookies and even more chocolate. What are your most creative commissions? I once did a steak cake for Father’s Day. For a recent birthday party, I did a hamburgerand-fries creation. I used a brownie for the patty, cake for the bun and coloured fondant
for the lettuce, tomato and onion. I made the French fries out of sugar cookies, and boy did they look real! I also did an ATV cake with full-on camouflage, and a 35mm camera for a photography buff. What’s your cake-making philosophy? I want every cake to taste as good as it looks, so everything is made from scratch with high-quality ingredients such as fresh local eggs, milk and butter. Secondly, dedication — I put 100 per cent into every baking project I take on. I love adding those small details that make the customers say, “Wow!” Finally, I believe that building good relationships with my customers is the key to success. Where do you find inspiration? Social media is huge for me. I’m constantly surfing baking sites looking for the latest trends, colours and decorating tips.
How many flavours do you offer? I can do about 15 flavours, but I’m always open to suggestions. Most people still want chocolate or vanilla, but like the idea of adding a special buttercream-flavoured icing. What’s the sweetest part about working in the bakery business? I love the celebratory atmosphere that comes with cake making. It’s really fun helping people create positive memories with friends and family at their special events. What about the future? Rather than working out of a commercial kitchen in Nobleton, my dream is to have a small custom cake shop in Alliston. See p. 56 for Centracchio’s Canada Day recipes! MAPLE CUPCAKES WITH MAPLE SYRUP BUTTERCREAM FROSTING & CANDIED BACON INGREDIENTS: Cupcakes 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp salt 3 tsp baking powder 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 3 large eggs 1 cup milk 3 tsp maple syrup Maple Buttercream Frosting 2 cups unsalted butter, softened 3 to 4 cups icing sugar 2 tbsp maple syrup, plus more for drizzling, if desired
Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare 2 cupcake pans with liners. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt and baking powder. Set aside. Using a stand mixer, mix butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs slowly and continue to mix until mixture is a pale yellow. Pour in flour mix and continue to mix while adding milk and maple syrup. Scrape down sides of bowl as needed. Divide batter into cupcake pan liners and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. Remove the cupcakes from oven and allow to cool completely. Makes 24. Maple Buttercream Frosting: Place butter, 3 cups icing sugar (leave 4th cup off to the side) and maple syrup in stand mixer. Mix on low until well combined, then on high for about 3 minutes. If buttercream is too runny,
gradually add remaining icing sugar to stiffen up buttercream. Once cupcakes are completely cooled, add maple buttercream to a piping bag and decorate your cupcakes. Top with candied bacon (see recipe) and drizzle extra fresh maple syrup on top!
CANDIED BACON INGREDIENTS: Half a package thick-sliced bacon 1/2 cup brown sugar Preheat oven to 375°F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Coat bacon on both sides with brown sugar and lay on parchment paper. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until bacon is cooked to desired crunch. Remove bacon from oven and allow to cool. Once cooled, chop up and top cupcakes.

travel | Getaway Get into the groove Make time at the outset to get acquainted with all this resort has to offer. Ste. Anne’s sits on 400 acres of farmland and includes the Main Inn, with treatment rooms, a restaurant, relaxation and eucalyptus steam rooms and more; the Ste. Anne’s Bakery; horse stables; herb and rose gardens; and Maison Santé, which houses workout equipment, a sauna and a hot tub. Worth trying: wellness classes. I was skeptical at the start of our 30-minute Yoga Nidra class. I struggle with turning off my hamsterwheel brain, even when I’m exhausted, so I was pleasantly surprised to find my body relaxing, part by part, as I lay on the yoga studio floor, listening to the instructor’s soothing voice. Savour local flavour Ste. Anne’s mouth-watering meals feature local ingredients whenever possible. The mojito tuna tartare, an appetizer infused with mint and rum and served on butter lettuce, melts in your mouth. The duck confit, which features spinach, shallots, apples and toasted walnuts, is a popular choice. Beef lovers may wish to ask
about the daily beef feature, created with Ste. Anne’s own grass-fed cattle. All menus include vegetarian and vegan options. Settle in Sandy and I enjoyed the quiet of Sentosa East, a short walk from the Main Inn and a world away from grocery shopping, taxiing kids around and the bleeping of smartphones. Our room in the triplex had two cushy queen-size beds, a sitting area, a fireplace and a generous deck with a view of the countryside. The overall unit includes a shared kitchen, living room and outdoor hot tub. Larger parties or whole families can take advantage of cottages, like the four-bedroom Vista Lago or the Maison Santé Nook. Need a room for just one or two? Stay in the original 150-year-old Massey family structure and enjoy a room with a whirlpool tub and woodburning fireplace. Just say, “Spaaaah!” No escape to Ste. Anne’s would be complete without indulging in at least one of its treat-
ments. And why stop at one? Sandy and I treated ourselves to facials and massages. My “Express Facial” was 45 minutes of headand-shoulders heaven, with a hand-and-arm massage thrown in for good measure. My sister’s one-hour “Signature Facial,” meanwhile, included a foot and head massage. As for the essential oils lingering in her hair post-treatment, she declared it was totally worth it. I had my own oiled-hair experience the next day during my 75-minute aroma stone therapy massage. After custom blending three essential oils, my therapist gently massaged me from head to toe using warm stones on my skin. I left feeling more relaxed than I can remember. Feel it to believe it And that, after all, is the point of the Ste. Anne’s getaway. You disconnect from the stresses of regular life and reconnect with the moment. The fact that the moment may be breathing in eucalyptus-infused steam or drinking in the sensation of warm rocks gliding on your tired shoulders, all the better. See steannes.com for more details.
More to Indulge In Ste. Anne’s is growing to offer guests more of both its traditional services as well as other sensory delights. Here’s what’s coming: • a hydrotherapy facility, with large, outdoor hot soaking tubs, cedar barrel saunas and a fire pit • cooking classes for groups or individuals • the spa’s exclusive skincare line, Ste. Anne’s Skin Nourishment, with ingredients right out of the gardens on the property
With its mouth-watering menus, range of comfy accommodations, world-class treatments and range of on-site indulgences, Ste. Anne’s is a relaxing getaway that is close to home.

like a local
This striking building is celebrating 16 years — at least in its current incarnation as a hub for arts and culture, as well as an elegant venue space. But its more utilitarian beginnings date back to 1889 when it was built, using local bricks and timber, to house farm implements for the Mercer Manufacturing Company. Through the years, it has also been a farmers’ co-op and, under the Gibson family in the 1960s, support for their transportation business. Then, in 2000, community leaders came up with a plan to preserve the Second Empire–style building and serve the community, and a centre for the area’s arts and culture was born.
