Last year, I had the experience of watching my son eat his first ice cream cone. This was a milestone I had looked forward to as a parent but, at the same time, I knew by the enjoyment of every single lick that it would be the last time I could drive by an ice cream shop without stopping. Kids are by far the best excuse to splurge on this sweet summer treat. In this summer edition, we have the inside scoop on the best places throughout Simcoe County to stop for fabulous ice cream, as well as gelato, smoothies, and milkshakes. If you need a reason to go for a drive, this is one sweet trip. Indian Flames has everyone in town talking about the taste of India now found in Alliston. GoodLife writer Katherine Elphick sat down with owner Clyde Almeida to find out more about this passionate chef and the spicy dishes you don’t want to leave without trying. If you love Indian food, you will find all of your favourites and more. For anyone who wants a new flavour experience, make sure Indian Flames is on your list. You won’t be disappointed. A short drive outside of town takes us to a home in Blue Mountain with breathtaking panoramic views. Those who favour open-concept loft/chalet inspired living will enjoy this home tour with great details you can incorporate into any design. Finally, enjoy local shopping finds, meet an artist from Innisfil, explore the beauty of New Zealand and take a taste holiday with Gord Stimmell as he picks the best wines at the LCBO to pair with any summer fare. Summer is a time to explore, enjoy, relax and, most of all, live the GoodLife!

for all Seasons By Patti Vipond Photos by Mike Guilbault
A window ringed aerie nestled in acres of orchards, Hill House has unlimited views of the changing seasons, Georgian Bay and the travels of the Sun and Moon. Seated on a serene knoll between the east and west ridges of the Beaver Valley, the light-filled aerie named Hill House by its smitten owners offers myriad of stunning landscapes and magnificent water views in every direction. From the west-facing second floor deck of the threelevel home, the owners sit and quietly trace the path of the sun along the mountain tops until it descends in a meltingly beautiful sunset. After dinner, they retire to the third floor’s east-facing loft furnished with cozy chairs in front of floor-to-ceiling windows to watch the progress of the moon as it calmly travels the night sky along the ridge.
It was the 360-degree view afforded by the property’s location that delighted the owners when they stopped at a for sale sign during a drive in 2000. Standing on the site was a piece of history – a modest two-storey Swiss ski chalet built by Sir John Templeton in the 1950s. The creator of the Templeton Growth Fund retreated to the chalet periodically to read, write and have some peace as well as to have a place for his family to escape to, if needed, during bomb scares of the Cold War era. The property was later sold to actor Jan Rubes who sold it to orchard owner Sakka Dykstra. When the current owners saw the old Templeton chalet, it housed orchard workers who picked apples from

the 8,500 apple trees on almost 93 acres of orchards surrounding the house on the knoll. However, recognizing the incredible potential for stunning views of the mountains to the east and west, Georgian Bay to the north and rolling farmlands to the south, the couple bought the property. The promise of those wonderful views was realized by a design plan that strewed floor-to-ceiling windows wherever possible including four panes set high in the west wall and two skylights incorporated into the cathedral ceiling of the Great Room. Without nearby neighbours, curtains were unnecessary so each window’s view unfolds 12 | GoodLife South Simcoe Summer 2014 ■
immediately. To amplify the natural light, all walls are painted white. The result is an atmosphere of airy ease, coloured by the owners’ much loved paintings. The Dancers, a large oil painting once rented and later bought by an owner from the Art Gallery of Ontario, complements the colours of the antique beech barn beams used in the home. Considering its position among the fruit trees, the 3,000-square-foot home was fittingly designed by Thunder Bay architectural firm Kuch Stephenson Gibson Malo to resemble a barn. However, the metaphor also extends

into the home’s interior. All beams used in the post and beam design are authentic 100-yearold beech beams from a local barn supplied by Antique Flooring in Markdale. The tawny coloured flooring through most of the home and all stairs were made from cutting the same beams into lengths. The owners wanted an industrial but cozy feel for their scenic home and the firm supplied it, site literally unseen. The owners dealt with two architectural firms that delivered city-style house plans. But an architect at Kuch Stephenson, who was a fraternity brother of an owner, understood their request for a small space suitable for two people with grown children and with as little in the design as possible to block the breathtaking views. The first design created by the firm, one featuring an open concept Great Room encompassing the kitchen, dining room and living room with a double-sided fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows on every side of the house, was just about perfect. The plan featured no less than six decks, three on the main floor and three on the second floor, to enable the couple to see the sun and moon rise and set, watch storms blow in from the west, chart the many moods of Georgian Bay and gaze at their long dirt lane running through the orchards.

It’s interesting. People either love the house or they don’t because they are more comfortable with separate rooms.”
Rustic Roots & Co. For Home, Garden & You!
The couple happily moved into their unique home in 2005 after watching its progress on many weekends. “It was kind of fun to see it evolve,” says one owner of the progressive pairing of contemporary, industrial elements like the foundry door from Hamilton that serves as the master bedroom door with a weathered apple ladder used by pickers long ago. Local materials were used as much as possible throughout the house including the barn beams, acid-washed zinc metal baseboards and artisan-made grates. “It’s interesting,” comments an owner. “People either love the house or they don’t because they are more comfortable with separate rooms. Every day, I get up and appreciate where I am. It’s just so magnificent and the view is so special.” The master bedroom, tucked into the second level beside the Great Room, has transom windows near the ceiling to let in the sunrise glow as well as windows facing the water. To make room in the bedroom for a fireplace, the designers placed a century-old claw foot tub and glassed-in shower in the bedroom with an adjacent powder room. The tub and shower sit on heated limestone tile flooring quarried in Owen Sound. A spacious dressing room beyond has a view of the orchards. The home’s front door opens into the main level foyer with an innovative carpet set into the floor to let guests clean their shoes without rolling up the carpet or jamming it in the door. Two cozy bedrooms on this level share a generous bathroom with steam shower and large sink. A family room features a high-efficiency, wood-burning fireplace that can heat the home on a frosty winter’s night by closing barn doors on the north and south side of the house. A forced-air furnace heats the home from the large semi-finished basement that could become more living space for a growing family. Wintertime sports are particularly popular in the Blue Mountains and the main level’s mud room shows proof those activities are no less popular with the owners of Hill House.

Pegs in the wall serve as storage areas for skis and snowshoes can be stored alongside. Heated tile floors keep ski boots warm and help dry out wet boots. Having acres of orchards at your back (and front) door is as pleasant in the wintertime as in summer for the owners. “There is a two-hour long snowshoe run that goes in and around those trees, out to the far off houses and back up here,” she says with a smile. “It’s really a great run. We’re also very close to the ski hills for when we want to go skiing.” However, with the snow gone and apple blossom season on its way, the owners are making use of their fire pit and its surrounding Muskoka chairs on the north side of the house. The view from the fire pit of Georgian Bay and the neat rows of apple trees bordered by tall forest is wonderful all year, but particularly so in the spring when the hill is white with fragrant blossoms. The cool spring nights are also a good time to retire to the upstairs loft.

Every night, starting on June 1st, the sun goes right down to where the land goes down in elevation in the north."
“We come up here and have a cocktail at night because the moon comes up over the mountain,” says the owner. “The moon moves like the sun does. It’s phenomenal in the fall because you have the big harvest moon. It’s gorgeous. The most beautiful time for us is the springtime because all the blossoms come out on the fruit trees and it’s like being on a cloud. But the second most beautiful time is the fall when the apple pickers are here and the apples are on the trees.” While living at their hill-top home, the owners have learned to track the path of the sun throughout the year. “Every night, starting on June 1st, the sun goes right down to where the land goes down in elevation in the north,” she explains. “That’s where the sun sets. But on Dec. 21, it sets at the other end of the ridge. It’s phenomenal. We sit out and watch the sunset. In fact, I run home to make sure I see it. You make dinner and have a glass of wine, sit down, watch the sunset and chat. You enjoy nature for a few minutes, the serenity and the beauty. You can’t come to a place like this and not enjoy the sunset and the sunrise. You just can’t. That’s what it’s all about.” This residence at 516520 7th Line in the Blue Mountains is listed for sale at $1,950,000 by Peter Kennedy of Chestnut Park Real Estate Ltd. in Toronto. IN THE
Clyde WITH
Almeida Clyde Almeida is proud to bring the tastes of India to Alliston. “It’s exciting to own Alliston’s first Indian restaurant,” the 42-year-old chef/owner of Indian Flames says with a smile. Since opening his 32-seat restaurant last November, the culinary proprietor has received a warm welcome. Recently, this GoodLife reporter caught up with the busy chef at his popular eatery. With sitar music playing in the background, we covered everything from his journey from Pakistan to Canada (arriving with only $75 in his pocket) to his passion for good Indian food and his commitment to local charities.

What led you to open up Alliston’s first Indian restaurant? Clyde Almeida: I like being first [laughs], and I like to take risks. Back home in Karachi (Pakistan), I owned the first pizza shop. It was super successful and always had line-ups out the door. We’ve been living in Alliston since 2008, and I felt the timing was right to open up a restaurant specializing in Indian cuisine. My parents are from India, but I was born and raised in Pakistan. When did you move to Canada? CA: My wife Vanessa and I arrived in Toronto as legal immigrants in 1999. I only had $75 in my pocket, and we came looking for a better life. It wasn’t easy in the beginning, but we’ve worked really, really hard to make a successful life here. I strongly believe that hard work and honesty pays at the end of the day. Before moving to Alliston, we lived in Mississauga where I worked for SIR Corp (a restaurant group that owns Jack Astor’s, Loose Moose, etc.).

Tell me about your culinary training. CA: I’ve been a chef for 26 years. I received my training in Karachi at the Hotel Marriott. I also did two diplomas and one degree in cooking. In Canada, I did chef’s training at Liaison College and graduated with honours. What got you interested in cooking? CA: I have dyslexia, so it’s really hard for me to read and write. I just don’t get it. I’m a practical kind of guy, so cooking works for me. When I was in grade seven, I had to leave school because it was so hard for me to study because of my dyslexia. Truth is, it was the best thing to have happened to me. After that, I went to culinary school, which worked out really well because I just love cooking.
YOUR ONE-STOP EMPLOYMENT CENTRE!
FOCUS is here to get you working!
What brought you to Alliston? CA: I grew up in a small town back home, so I like the small town feeling. After the birth of our two sons (Joshua, 9, and Isaiah, 7) my wife and I decided to leave Toronto and move to a small town. We looked around a lot, but Alliston just felt like home. Alliston has been very kind to us. The local community has been very supportive of our restaurant. Tell me about your menu. CA: It’s a sampling of the best of India. It showcases various regions in India and their specialities. Different regions of India offer their own specialities with their very own taste, subtlety and aroma. We have the best Korma you would get from Delhi, the best Mumbai butter chicken and the best Goa beef vindaloo, and so on.
Let FOCUS take the stress out of finding and hiring employees!

Where do the recipes come from? CA: I’ve developed all of the recipes over time from years of cooking experience. It’s a blending of sauces and spices that I’ve fine tuned over the years. What’s your cooking philosophy? CA: I believe our main purpose as humans is to serve. The best way to serve somebody is by feeding them good food. That’s my philosophy and it has taken me a long way. I love pleasing people as it gives me great pleasure and joy. What are some of the house specialities? CA: The kabab rolls (beef or chicken) are my house speciality. My vindaloo is also very, very much in demand. We have shrimp, chicken, beef, fish vindaloo any type you want! Everything is popular, but people have their favourite Indian dishes, which they order every time they come here. Many of my customers don’t even have to tell me what they want — I just know because their order is always the same. When I see them walking up to the door, I just go ahead and place their favourite food order [laughs].

a wonderful appetizer
Kashmiri Mutton
Kababs
This kabab recipe is courtesy of chef Clyde Almeida of Indian Flames in Alliston.
“IT’S A WONDERFUL APPETIZER TO SERVE WHEN YOU ARE HAVING GUESTS OVER,” says the local chef. Rather than ground mutton, you can substitute ground beef, chicken or even fish.
inGREDiEntS:
PREPARAtion:
1/2 kg mutton, minced
Mix together all ingredients (except egg and breadcrumbs) and place in a food processor or blender. Grind finely. Shape into small round kebabs. Dip into egg, and then cover with the breadcrumbs. Heat oil in a frying pan. Fry kebabs golden and remove.
2 slices bread 2 tbsps white vinegar 8 green chilies 8 black peppercorns 1 tsp cumin seeds salt, to taste 1 egg, beaten 1 cup bread crumbs vegetable oil, for frying
28 | GoodLife South Simcoe Summer 2014 ■
What three-course meal would you order for me? CA: I would order you a kabab roll as an appetizer. If you are a spicy person, I would recommend the fish, shrimp, chicken or beef vindaloo (a sweet and spicy sauce with a touch of tangerine). If you are a vegetarian spicy person, I would suggest the chole masala (chick peas simmered in a thick curry sauce). If you are not a spicy person, I would order the Delhi chicken tikka masala (tender marinated chicken cooked in a spiced creamy curry sauce). For the non-spicy vegetarian, I would recommend either the daal masala (lentils cooked with ginger, garlic and spices) or the palak paneer (spinach cooked in rich spices, simmered with golden fried cottage cheese). For dessert, I would serve the ras malai (a mix of cream, cottage cheese and sugar rolled into a ball and served with milk). Where do you find culinary inspiration? CA: People inspire me. When my customers eat and they are satisfied, it tells me that I can keep doing what I am doing. Beyond Indian Flames, what are some of your favourite foodie places? CA: From day one, I have always loved good food. I’ll literally eat anything as long as it tastes great. Alliston has a lot of wonderful places to eat. I particularly enjoy Yuki Sushi, AlbaLisa Gourmet Food (albalisagourmetfood. com) and Rocco’s Sisters Bakery & Deli. I understand you are interested in making friends, not just clients. Can you expand? CA: My overall philosophy in life is just to be a good person. Many of the guests who eat at my restaurant eventually become friends of mine. I just can’t believe how large my circle of friends has become since I opened Indian Flames. I treat people the way I want to be treated, and this philosophy has served me well.
Drysdale’s Tree Farm Garden Nursery, direct from the grower. Over 80 varieties of mature trees and shrubs. Residential, Estate & Commercial Landscape Design & Installation, Water Features & Natural Stone Work
Tell me about your charity work. CA: I strongly believe that giving just makes things better. We are involved in four charity events each year. For a month, we donate $1 from every meal sold to a local charity. For example, we just raised about $512 for Stevenson Memorial Hospital. We also offer three cooking courses throughout the year, whereby all money received goes directly to a local charity. The cooking courses are fun because people can come in for a lunchtime class, get to eat a meal, and all money goes to local charities. You can’t go wrong with that. Cost is about $20 per class, and you can call or stop by for more information. What do you cook at home? CA: The restaurant is closed on Sunday, so Sunday is my cooking day. I love cooking international food, anything from pasta and sushi to Mexican. I don’t cook Indian food at home on Sunday because I like to play around in the kitchen. I will take both of my boys and we will cook up something fun. How do you cater to guests with dietary restrictions? CA: Most of our products don’t have wheat in them, so we have lots of gluten-free options. We also don’t have any nuts in the kitchen. Furthermore, very few of our sauces have dairy, so we have great lactose-free choices. We also offer plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Do you have specials? CA: We have lunch deals, for example, if you order from the “curry” menu it’s $10. We are also going to start having a deal for local seniors. One day a week, seniors (65 and over) will be able to have a meal off the menu for $10. We also offer weekly specials showcasing both meat and vegetarian dishes.

Can you tell me about your children’s menu? CA: Our kids menu is real food, with no Indian spices added to it. We offer grilled salmon, grilled chicken or shrimp with rice and vegetables.
You’ve got the ear of thousands of local diners, anything else you like to add? CA: Support local businesses. Not just me, but every local business in Alliston. It helps you, your neighbours and the community in general.
Any exciting plans for the future? CA: I want to explore more business opportunities and create more jobs in Alliston. My goal is to manufacture and wholesale all of my Indian sauces to fine food stores. I’m hoping to have this project up and running by July.

Our doggie cones are very popular with our furry friends
Entering its seventh season, Alliston’s Cool Moose Creamery is a popular ice cream destination. “We serve 20 flavours of scooped ice cream, along with frozen yogurt, awesome milkshakes, smoothies and ice cream floats,” says 20-year-old Matthew Perantinos, who heads up the seasonal scooping shop. The Western University student took over the reins from his older brother Greig, who originally founded Cool Moose Creamery. “Greig (who started the business at age 19) has moved on to new things, but still helps out occasionally.” Along with tried and true flavours, some harder to find tastes (such as Tiger Tail, Triple Tornado and Black Cherry) are also on offer. Frozen yogurt and smoothies blended with real frozen fruit also make the hit list. “Cheesecake frozen yogurt is our best seller,” says Perantinos, who is majoring in history. “Instead of mixing in fruit, we add real cheesecake to the frozen yogurt and serve it in a cone or cup. It's delicious!”

Fido is also welcome. “Our doggie cones are very popular with our furry friends,” he says with a smile. “Basically they have a little bit of Vanilla ice cream and a dog biscuit on top.” The business charges $1 for every doggie cone, with 50 cents of that dollar donated to animals in need. So far, the local ice cream shop has raised over $2,000 for the Alliston Humane Society. Community involvement and charity work is a priority for the local business, which often holds fundraising events in front of the store. Last year, it raised over $2,500 for CLASS (Community Living Association for South Simcoe), and has also supported other charities, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, in the past. The young entrepreneur says Cool Moose Creamery offers the perfect summer outing. “Look for our blue umbrellas, where you can sit outside, enjoy your cone and watch the world go by.” Open May 15 to September.

CReMAHH 41 Main street West, Beeton 888-481-7978 cremahh.com
Located in downtown historic Beeton, Cremahh is an artisanal gelato company worth checking out. “I love making gelato and introducing people to the full gelato experience,” says owner Sabina Morell, who set up shop last year. Before diving into the gelato business, Morell travelled to Italy to study with some of the world’s best gelato masters. “These hard core gelato makers taught me how to create exquisite artisanal gelato with bold pairings and inspiring recipe combinations,” she explains. Cremahh’s gelato is made fresh daily using all-natural ingredients. Local and seasonal ingredients are key. From maple syrup to local berries, Cremahh gelato takes full advantage of nearby crops. Even the milk comes from Sheldon Creek Dairy in Loretto. “Beeton is known for its honey, so we often use it to create some unique flavours like honey orange blossom,” says Morell. “Our gelato couldn’t be any fresher.” Seven new unique flavours are featured daily. As for the top selling taste? “It’s hard to say, but salted caramel and

lemon biscotti go over really well,” says the gelato maker. Cremahh also sells specialty coffees, real fruit natural slushies, all natural healthy smoothies, baked goods (including sugar-free, dairy-free and gluten-free treats) as well as salads and grilled sandwiches.
Beyond its Beeton shop, the gourmet gelato company also specializes in catering events such as weddings and corporate functions. You can even order Cremahh gelato online to be delivered.

Along with frozen yogurt, visitors can also purchase various Sheldon Creek Dairy products such as whipping cream (it’s 46 per cent and chef’s love it), sour cream, Greek yogurt, chocolate, strawberry (seasonal) and skim milk — to name a few. Additional local grocery items line the store’s shelves. Five flavours of Kawartha Dairy ice cream are also available for scooping. While enjoying a delicious frozen yogurt, guests can also take in some fresh country air and farm life. “Our dairy has glass windows so folks can see how our milk goes from farm to bottle,” says the local farmer. “People love watching us process our milk and dairy products.” Be sure to check out Sheldon Creek Dairy’s “Day on the Farm” on Saturday, June 14. See website for details.
““
Talk about farm fresh! When you order a frozen yogurt at Sheldon Creek Dairy, you might spot the cow that produced the milk grazing in a nearby field. “Like all of our milk and cream products, our frozen yogurt is farm fresh, natural and local,” says Marianne den Haan, whose family has operated a dairy farm on the property since 1953. Local indeed. Just over two years ago, the family built an on-site dairy to produce and bottle their own milk completely on the farm. “We make our frozen yogurt from our Greek yogurt. It’s super creamy, thick, very healthy, preservative-free and has no guck,” says den Haan, who is also the chief yogurt maker. Flavours are seasonal, ranging from Rhubarb and Local Strawberry (made with local strawberries, graham crumbs and shortbread) to Pumpkin Spice. “We even serve up Sweet Corn frozen yogurt,” she chuckles. “We try to be innovative with our flavours, but our best seller is probably Chocolate Dipped Strawberries.” One or two flavours are available at a time.

Westgarth, who started the business in 2009, creates signature flavours, such as Dulce de Leche with spiced Mexican Chocolate, Woolwich Chèvre with Lavender Honey, Banana Flambé with Rum and Dark Chocolate Shards, Salted Caramel with Fleur de Sel and Muskoka S’mores — to name a few. Created in a small lodge kitchen at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Belly’s gourmet adult ice creams and sorbets are available across Ontario in more than 30 retail stores, and at select scooping shops. Belly Ice Cream is available locally in pints at Nicholyn Farms, the Creemore 100-Mile Store and Midland’s Ciboulette et Cie. Along with take-home containers, Local Foods Mart in Barrie sells the gourmet ice cream by the scoop from May to September. “This summer we’ll be stocked up with Belly Ice Cream,” says Local Foods Mart owner Julian Daniel. “Normally, we sell about six flavours, but this summer we’re expanding the store and adding a patio so more flavours will be on offer.” His customers tend to have a soft spot for Belly Ice Cream’s 16 Vanilla Bean, Callebaut Chocolate Straight Up and Chocolate Dipped Ontario Strawberry. Why does Local Foods Mart only sell Belly Ice Cream? “It tastes absolutely scrumptious,” explains the fine food shop owner. “Chef Shelley Westgarth makes each tub by hand, using real milk, eggs, cream, and genuine local ingredients like strawberries, maple syrup and rhubarb from her mother’s garden. Just like she says, ‘no funky stuff.’ ” Daniel adds that Hollywood A-listers also love Belly Ice Cream.

Classic flavours rule at this local ice cream shop. Think Pralines and Cream, Tiger Tail and Mint Chocolate Chip. But unique tastes are also on offer. “Each year we try to showcase new flavours of ice cream,” explains Bray. This year’s crop includes: Chocolate Chili (a rich chocolate with a hint of heat), Chicago Mix (a buttered popcorn, salty caramel and cheesy blend of taste tantalizing licks) and a refreshing Lemon Sherbet!” Gluten-free cones, along with no sugar and non-dairy scooping options are also available. Jeanette Luchese
An Innisfil woman fulfilling a promise to herself is making up for lost time as an artist. By Maija Hoggett Jeanette Luchese has always been creative, spending 30 years working as a graphic artist. When she chose to start focusing on being a full-time artist, she enrolled in the School of Design and Visual Art at Georgian College and graduated with honours. In 2008, she won the Juror’s Choice Award at the South Simcoe Art Council’s emerging artist exhibit and she hasn’t slowed down since. These days her passion is on display at a number of galleries in the area — including South Simcoe and Barrie — and internationally. After Luchese has made her mark on a canvas, the colourful brush strokes represent her reconstruction of reality. At first glance the paintings may look abstract, but Luchese enjoys bringing aspects of drawing into her work and gets joy from not being characterized by just one medium. “I enjoy saying that I cross-pollinate disciplines,” she says.
48 | GoodLife South Simcoe Summer 2014 ■
Luchese’s ability also extends beyond painting. She has also done sculptural work, most notably her piece What day is it? which was part of an exhibit in Pot Huron, Michigan, and a six-foot tall sculpture called Unconditional Love in Sarnia. For many pieces, Luchese says she doesn’t map out a pre-determined plan. “I don’t hold images in my mind, I hold thoughts and feelings and those come out,” she explains. The process is the most truthful way for Luchese to work. “The reason I create the way I do is if you’re constantly thinking your perception is wrong, how can you be honest?” Inspiration is drawn from everywhere. Her entire environment plays a part in the process, and as a piece evolves she starts seeing different influences. “I’m really inspired by the people that surround me and stories of people that overcome,” she says.
Rediscovering her love for painting and daring to display her pieces publicly has given Luchese the opportunity to get in touch with her own history. Her mother immigrated to Canada in the 1940s and up until recently Luchese had never been overseas to meet the European side of her family. Through the Internet she connected with the organizers of an Italian exhibit based on human rights and speaking out. When her painting was on display, she boarded a plane for Italy where she was able to see her work at the exhibit and connect with her mother’s family in Italy. Since taking the trip overseas, she’s noticed a change in her colour palette and says she is gravitating more towards primary colours and livelier brush strokes. Take a taste holiday with these winning wines Barone Montalto 2013 Pinot Gris
By GORD STIMMELL
I
t’s finally summer and the sipping is easy. Well, it should be. But finding a taste treasure is not so breezy. Thousands of bottles like unknown soldiers populate the store shelves. Which to choose? The process takes time, and dogs abound. So today I am uncorking my chosen wines suited to laid-back summer life. These were chosen from more than 1,000 wines recently tasted. It does not matter if you are on a city backyard deck, or basking at the cottage. Why spend $30 or more for fine wines if the same quality exists for much less? Besides, these lazy hazy days are best spent having fun. Serious is out. So I have sifted through my tasting notes to bring you the best for less. Three are absolute steals. You will not believe how good they are for the price. These are wonderfully suited for weekday quaffing, whether inside at the dining table or outside on the deck. Try one, you may end up going back to pick up a case and make it your house wine. And for your special dinner parties with guests on weekends, we have selected an elegant white and a power red that taste like the best stuff in the $30 range but cost half that. Enjoy! 52 | GoodLife South Simcoe Summer 2014 ■
$8.95 (Italy) I presumed this Sicilian offering was at least $13 and was stunned to discover it is less than $9. Attractive aromas of fresh pear, lime and marshmallow build to a delivery of spicy pear livened by a lovely, racy citrus style. A lime zest finish triggers seafood cravings. Casal Thaulero 2013 Sangiovese $7.45 (Italy) A new vintage of an amazing best buy. A bouquet of fragrant blackberry and earthy black cherry and cedar. The medium weight flavours hint of black olives, violets and black cherry with a blackberry and cherry pulp finish. Food suggestions: Tomato sauced penne with spicy sausages or lamb lasagna, manicotti. LCBO #588996 Rating: 89+
Deakin Estate 2013 Shiraz $9.95 (Australia) A new year for this crowdpleaser shows aromas of smoky vanilla, burnt embers, black cherry with delicate herbal notes and super mellow vanilla-laced cherry and blueberry pie flavours. Totally succulent fruit! Food suggestions: Banquet burgers, back ribs or sirloin and bell pepper kebabs. LCBO #560821 Rating: 89+

Local couple strike gold with
OIL
By kAtHRYn l. Mooij PHOTOS By nAt kAY
“
I’m not just doing a business, IT’S IN MY HEART, this oil
“
54 | GoodLife South Simcoe Summer 2014 ■
Dr. Thomas W. Ellis HBSc. ND
Many people look far and wide for golden opportunities, but one Alliston couple has forged a successful business in their growing town
E
rnestine Hormann and Arne Kluge are purveyors of Styrian Gold, a delightfully delicious pumpkin seed oil from the Styrian region of Austria. They are the only Canadian importers of the renowned and regulated Styrian pumpkin seed oil sometimes referred to as “green gold.” Appearing black in the bottle, the deep green is revealed when the oil is poured. In 2003, Ernestine moved to Canada from Styria, famous for its pumpkin seed oil. When she ran out of the supply she’d brought with her, Ernestine realized how much she missed the richly aromatic, yet light, nutty flavoured oil that is reported to have several nutritional benefits. Every friend or relative coming from Austria was asked to bring some of the precious oil. When Canadian friends commented on the taste and news outlets began reporting on the health benefits of pumpkin seed oil, Arne and Ernestine decided to import the product. In 2011, the couple embarked on their Styrian Gold business, selling the oil at health and culinary fairs. Not suitable for cooking, the oil infuses salads, pastas, breads and even desserts, with a unique and rich flavour. Styrian pumpkin seed oil is regulated in the European Union by a “Protected Geographical Indication” (PGI) designation. The PGI seal proves the product is linked to a specific area and is recognized as a mark of authenticity. (Similar to the VQA for Ontario wines). The Styrian Gold brand also comes from an awardwinning producer. Pumpkin seed oil producers
in Styria go through rigorous testing for aroma, colour, taste and viscosity. Producers who meet the exacting standards, receive an award. With both the PGI and award seals, as well as specific numbering on each bottle, consumers can be assured that Styrian Gold is a product of excellence. In 2012, the Alliston store opened. Today, walk-in and repeat customers are keeping Arne and Ernestine busy Monday to Friday and shows keep them occupied on the weekends. In addition, more than 100 stores in Ontario carry the oil and several more across Canada are distributing Styrian Gold. Recently, in conjunction with a Wasaga Beach business, an organic lip balm was introduced to the market. Last fall “The Elements” lotion was created by Sacred House using essential oils and Styrian Gold. Both new products are available at the Styrian Gold store in Alliston, along with pumpkin seeds au natural, and seeds with pure flavour coatings such as cocoa and wasabi. Arne says it’s great to work close to home. As they expand the list of distributors across Canada, Ernestine is reflective. “I’m not just doing a business, it’s in my heart, this oil,” she says.

AIR By bARt CARD

IT’S BEEN SAID THAT THE SuN SHINES ON NEW ZEALAND BEFORE ANyWHERE ELSE SINCE EVERy NEW DAy IN THIS SMALL, REMOTE LOCALE IS SOMETHING TO CHERISH. AND TAKE IT FROM ME, THIS SLOGAN HAS BEEN EVIDENT LONG BEFORE DIRECTOR PETER JACKSON OPENED THE WORLD’S EyES TO THE COuNTRy’S BEAuTy IN HIS OSCAR-WINNING LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGy.
Air New Zealand makes the trip even more appealing with three non-stop flights each week between Vancouver and Auckland. The travel time is a little over 14 hours, whereas previously the flight from Vancouver to New Zealand totalled an average of around 20 hours via LA. Now business class passengers are treated to a luxurious direct flight aboard Air New Zealand’s fleet of Boeing 777-200ERs that feature lie-flat beds, vast entertainment options and award-winning food and wine. Star Alliance partner Air Canada will also be code sharing on this service. Also this service provides a convenient one-stop route for Canadians travelling to many Australian destinations and minimizes the requirement of transiting through the U.S. Checking into the Hilton Auckland is a great way to start too as it is positioned at the end of Princes Wharf on the Auckland waterfront, offering a great view across Auckland’s inner harbour. The development is a transformation of six utilitarian Second World War vintage cargo sheds. A ferry ride followed to Waiheke Island, home to an eclectic mix of winemakers, olive growers and white-collar executives who commit to the weekly commute to downtown Auckland. What a beautiful day visiting the likes of the Mudbrick vineyard and restaurant, and Stonyridge, whose owner and winemaker Stephen White is the pioneer behind winemaking on the island. The former Round the World yachtsman is also the maker of the country’s most expensive wine, the Stonyridge Larose, which is one of the world’s top cabernet blends. An island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand comprises two main land masses – the North Island, known for its beaches and the South Island and its magnificent mountains – and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. enous Maori named New Zealand Aotearoa, commonly translated as The Land of the Long White Cloud. The Realm of New Zealand also includes the Cook Islands and Niue, Tokelau and the Ross Dependency. New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation, situated about 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles) southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. New Zealand is situated the same distance eastwards from Australia as London is to Moscow, so if someone tells you it’s right next to Australia, you had better set them straight. Tiny, yes, yet New Zealand packs a heavyweight punch with its vibrant scenery, fabulous festivals, superb food and wine, and magical outdoor experiences. Equally impressive is the country’s mainstream Maori culture, as New Zealand recognizes and celebrates its indigenous people. The New Zealand tourism industry is embracing all things eco … and a stroll along the nine Great Walks brings this point home nicely. It’s paying dividends too, with more than 2.3 million overseas visitors last year alone. Any visit to New Zealand requires some time in Hawke’s Bay Wine Country, the area’s leading food and wine region with more than 2,200 hours of sunshine each year on the east coast of the North Island. It’s really a region of contrasts with a diverse collection of activities. Families enjoy the sun and golden sand beaches, water parks, crystal clear rivers and the National Aquarium. Hawke’s Bay is home to a worldclass concentration of Art Deco architecture, fresh local produces and artisan food producers, complemented by a vibrant arts scene and a rich Maori culture. Some memorable stops here included the Mission Estate Winery and Church Road Winery, both established in the 1800s, and the Mangapapa Petit Hotel. Built more than a century ago, I enjoyed a superb five-course meal that may take 100 years to forget! Off to Wairarapa for a couple of days, which the nearby Wellington locals see as a trendy weekend rural escape. No wonder since it’s a

nice respite from city life thanks to its quaint townships, a thriving café scene, arts and culture as well as many nature walks. The Martinborough Square lists some 36 boutique wineries within its walking distance, and the Peppers Martinborough Hotel has not forgotten its past with a sense of history that will charm one and all as soon as you step in the front door. A one-hour drive to Wellington – New Zealand’s capital – allows us first-hand to walk the compact city while savouring its cosmopolitan flavour. Making your way through inner city Wellington means a stop at Lambton Quay to catch the iconic Wellington Cable Car to the very top for a breathtaking view of the city. And then it’s off to City Gallery Wellington, where I stood
in awe of the work of Laurence Aberhart, the country’s most eminent photographer and his collection of 200 key works from the last four decades. And it was all done with a 100-year-old view camera! About 15 per cent of New Zealand’s population of 4 million are of Maori descent and are affiliated to a recognized tribe. Maori trace their families back through their whakapapa (genealogy) to the waka (canoe) that their ancestors sailed across the vast Pacific Ocean. Maori have a rich and dynamic culture, which captures their age-old connection with the spiritual and natural worlds. Through their whakapapa, they continue to identify with this connection by way of their mihi (greeting). They will name

Te reo Maori is a living language spoken by about a quarter of the Maori population in New Zealand. Approximately half of those speakers are under 25. It is a Polynesian language similar to other Pacific languages, such as Hawaiian and Tahitian, which possesses a unique poetry and musicality. Maori is one of the two official languages in New Zealand. Much of contemporary New Zealand culture is derived from British roots. It also includes significant influences from American, Australian and Maori cultures, along with those of other European cultures and, more recently, Polynesian and Asian cultures. The music and cuisine of New Zealand are similar to that of Britain and the United States, although both have some distinct New Zealand and Pacific qualities. The locals certainly love their country but are friends of Canada as well. They tell me that our country is just as breathtaking, from Vancouver to Newfoundland and everything in between. Ten days trekking across New Zealand’s North Island has convinced me that a return engagement is a necessity. For more information on New Zealand: www.newzealand.com Bart Card bartcard@rogers.com
