Sutton’s Going on... in Simcoe County
BIll KIndou BroKer of record
Top 100 Employer speaks out on Simcoe county Real Estate
Sutton group IncentIve realty Inc., BroKerage
More and more clients are turning to the expertise and market knowledge of Sutton’s professional agents and leaving with a smile and a good review. Bill Kindou, Broker of Record at Sutton Group Incentive Barrie, purchased the business in 2002 from Don Jerry, who had owned it previously since 1993. In the past 17 years since taking ownership, Bill has seen tremendous development and been able to grow the staff from 40 agents at time of purchase to over 186 including staff. With eleven branch offices including the Barrie main office, midland branch, Barrie Branch offices, Orillia, Alliston, Innisfil and Collingwood offices, as well as Angus, Port Carling and Gravenhurst coming soon, Sutton Group Incentive is situated right where clients require, it’s ready to get down to business, whether that be anything from leasing property to selling your home or a piece of land. “We handle residential, commercial, farms, vacant lands and leases,” Bill explained, noting agents are ready and enthusiastic to work with clients to achieve positive outcomes on a variety of transactions. “For any real estate needs just call one of our offices.” With a balanced and fair-minded business approach, Bill has been able to create an environment where clients and sales representatives alike thrive and grow. Sutton provides a superb compensation package for

agents and also ensures they always have top-notch computers and the most modern technology to do their job at peak efficiency and with all the latest tools. Bill also conducts weekly in-house training for agents, keeping them on top of market trends, changing regulations, and every other aspect of the real estate business. By fostering training and leadership programs for staff, giving constant attention to encouraging excellent business relationships and upholding a business model built around a cost-controlled, creative approach, Sutton continues to be able to offer the outstanding service and results for which it is known. As it continually adapts to the latest market developments Sutton stands at the apex of industry, technology and marketing moving forward. Sutton’s excellent treatment of its agents extends to its clients as well, as it proves to be the perfect fit for an increasing number of families and individuals looking to buy, sell or lease. Sutton Group Incentive also prides itself on giving back to the community, and donates to charities including Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Care Centre (RVH), The Barrie Women and Children’s Crisis Centre, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Barrie, Media For Young Minds and other worthy causes throughout Simcoe County. Sutton is 100 percent Canadian-owned and was founded in Vancouver

in 1983. It offered a groundbreaking new real estate concept and soon gained momentum and growth, expanding throughout the country. After its steady growth since founding, Sutton now has a total of around 200 offices across Canada and over 8,000 sales representatives. Sutton’s core philosophy and business model puts the realtor and client, rather than the real estate agency, at the centre of every transaction, giving priority to an optimal customersalesrepresentativerelationshipandsmooth, rewarding transaction. Selling a home can be a challenging task, but with the confidence, professionalism and market knowledge of a Sutton sales representative it becomes that much easier. Choosing Sutton is a big step in the right direction towards a successful, rewarding real estate transaction, and Bill is hoping for even more expansion in the future. “We look forward to continued growth in our company,” Bill said. “We also thank all of our clients who’ve supported our business over the years.” IT IS OUR FOCUS TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE SATISFIED …TODAY…TOMORROW… AND IN THE FUTURE. * SUTTON GROUP SERVICES: WE KNOW HOW TO MOVE YOU – IT’S OUR BUSINESS

illiam Dwyer knows all too well the toll cancer can take. The 93-year-old Barrie resident lost his mother and two sons to the disease. And now he is battling it himself. That said, he’s not letting it get in the way of reaching the goal he set out 38 years ago when he signed up for the inaugural Terry Fox Run in 1981. He raised $98,000 last year for the Terry Fox Foundation, bringing his total to $876,000 since he picked up that first fundraising sheet in 1981. His goal from the day he started was to raise $1 million - a number he is on track to reach through his fundraising efforts for the 2019 event. “I saw Terry run on one leg, and I said if he can do something on one leg, I can do something on two, so I got involved and have been involved ever since,” he said. “You see so many people sick and dying - young and old … and almost everybody has
been impacted by cancer.” Dwyer was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago, and the disease has now spread to other areas of his body. “It is at a standstill right now, but you never know when it’s going to explode,” he said, adding he is currently undergoing treatment. While he is no longer able to complete the fivekilometre route, Dwyer has every intention of lacing up his sneakers and attending the event on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Centennial Park to support participants and collect any last-minute donations. In the meantime, Dwyer’s family has helped create an online fundraising page to collect donations now that he isn’t able to get out and about as easily due to his health issues. To help Dwyer reach his goal of $1 million in donations, visit http://www.terryfox.ca/WillDwyer.

Why your “Cleaning” Could Save your life! Barrie Primary Care Campus
E
veryone knows that swelling and bleeding mean that something is wrong. A swollen twisted ankle or a nasty infected wound often take people to an emergency room. However not everyone realizes that red, swollen or bleeding gums should also be immediately addressed. Gingivitis, while commonplace, can be an indicator that other serious health changes can be occurring throughout the body. The swelling that is seen in gingivitis is inflammation. Inflammation is our body’s response to cellular injury. Our body swells up to try to rid the body of the initial cause of injury and to try to reduce further damage. However, the chemicals that our own body releases to stop the problem can end up being a longer term inflammatory response. Studies are showing that our full body health and our oral health are very closely linked. The inflammation we see in the mouth may also be present in the heart, liver and circulatory system. Those bleeding gums can be the first visible sign that you have other medical conditions. If you have other medical conditions, a gum infection like gingivitis or periodontal disease can just add to the stress that your body is under. Dental professionals are trained to diagnose and treat all types of oral disease. Whether it be a localized gingivitis brought
on by pregnancy, or an advanced case of periodontal disease caused by an aggressive strain of bacteria, there are treatments and home care regimes available. The dentist and hygienist will assess the condition and then monitor the healing. Just as a doctor may prescribe statin medication, your hygienist can make recommendations to use specific preventative oral care products. The hygienist will also remove plaque and hard deposits to help your body fight the infection and reduce inflammation. The length of time between your cleaning appointments is determined based on how you are responding to the treatment. In some cases, if a person does not respond to treatment, a medical consultation may be warranted. Dental and medical professionals work together to determine your risk factors and condition. The professionals at the Barrie Smile Centre want to treat your whole body health. They will educate you about your level of inflammation and disease and advise you how to treat it. They will also work with your doctor should that be necessary.

ivian Stone has always felt a desire to help others. Stone has been volunteering as a tutor with the Barrie Literacy Council since retiring and moving to Barrie over a decade ago, and said she always knew she wanted to get involved in teaching adults. “Somebody I knew was working with a similar group in Toronto, and I knew that’s what I’d like to do when I retired,” she said. “Unfortunately, when you’re working it can be pretty difficult to find the time to volunteer. Once you retire, it gives me purpose and I get to meet a lot of people.” The Barrie Literacy Council assists adults to improve their basic reading, writing and math skills by providing one-to-one tutoring and small group learning sessions. Along with tutoring, she has served as a member of the board for the last six years and occasionally
assists with the organization’s independent study group. Currently, Stone is volunteering twice a week with a student who is working to earn his GED. “I think I get more out of it than the students do. I have been doing one-one-one tutoring pretty much the entire time I’ve been at the literacy council, and I find you get to know them pretty well,” she said. “You get to know what their trials and tribulations are, as well as what they’re going through and what their goals are.” Seeing her student reach their goals provides a true sense of satisfaction, she added. “When you know that they are accomplishing something … it gives a sense that I have helped and a sense of pride. It’s like when you have kids and you see them doing well in school, it makes you feel good.” The Barrie Literacy Council currently serve about 100 students and boasts 89 active volunteers.

arrie’s new poet laureate is hoping to give a new image to the world of poetry. Victoria Butler, 23, was selected as the city’s new poet laureate last November and said the news came as quite a surprise. “I was stoked,” Butler said. “I’d made a Tweet ages ago that was like ‘I might mess around and become the new poet laureate of Barrie’ - and then I actually did become the poet laureate of Barrie. It’s kind of crazy. It’s a great honour and to be chosen was very validating. I feel like I’ve done a lot of work in our community for a few years now and to have that recognized was validating. “I think having a young person be the face of poetry in Barrie is really encouraging. Usually we associate poetry with old dead guys and that needs to start changing.” According to the city’s website, the poet laureate is tasked with raising the profile of the literary arts by writing, publishing and performing poetry, educating the public, promoting literacy, as well as encour-
aging and celebrating other local poets and writers. Butler is also editor-in-chief and co-founder, along with Will Crosson, of The Northern Appeal - a bi-annual, not-for-profit literary journal borne and bred in Simcoe County that publishes a curated selection of works submitted by local artists and writers. “I love poetry, I love writing (and) I love the City of Barrie. My biggest passion is getting communities together and creating opportunities for artists and writers to get their work out and to be celebrated,” said Butler, who both lives and works in downtown Barrie. “There is so much I can do with this role. I want to use it to the absolute best that I can. I want to be someone people can approach on the street. I want to make poetry more accessible to my community and like something people feel can be a part of even if they’re not writers or have read much poetry.”

helly Skinner has taken her own trials and tribulations, and then used them as a driving force for change. Skinner moved to Barrie from Toronto in 2012 as a single parent seeking a slower pace. She got a little more than she bargained for and says moving here as a queer woman was a culture shock. She worked hard in her role as a sexual health and wellness coordinator to become a person of change in her new community. “I used who I am and my platform to talk about issues that are typically considered taboo. Through that, getting out in the community, as well as running events and fundraisers … it’s how I got my name out in the community,” she said. Through work on her own television program on Rogers, Skinner was asked to sit on the board for Barrie Pride where she has served as vicechairperson of sponsorship and marketing, as well
festival and event coordinator. “I’ve helped bring Barrie Pride from 1,500 participants in 2016 … to over 10,000 in 2018. It was really great to be able to … help that organization grow and build and have more of a presence in our city.” Despite her busy life as a single mother, Skinner says it’s imperative she find ways to give back to the people and place that has done so much for her. “If it weren’t for community and for the people who reached out on my behalf, the support of local businesses hiring me so I could pay my bills, I would not be here today,” she said. “I am a tried and true lover of Barrie for everything it has done for me and I try to use my voice to support many different organizations.”

Results Focused Treatment from head to toe by highly qualified Physiotherapists. Mandi Hayes, owner of Resolution Physiotherapy & IMS Clinic, knows her team of highly experienced and post-graduate trained Manual Physiotherapists makes her clinic unique. This uniqueness and the quality of treatment from Resolution’s team is reflected in their winning of the 2017 and 2018 Readers’ Choice Award, as well as the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Consumer’s Choice Awards. “We hire only highly qualified, experienced Physiotherapists and are proud to have numerous Physiotherapists who have Canada’s highest Manual Physiotherapy and Sports Physiotherapy Certifications. Resolution’s love of working with athletes and active people of all ages is obvious as their walls are covered with photos of appreciative clients including Canadian National team athletes, firefighters, police officers, track stars, swimmers, wrestlers, volleyball players, basketball athletes, rugby players, dancers, and hockey players. “When I opened my clinic 8 years ago, my goal was to build a team of highly motivated and qualified physios like myself,” says Mandi. “It makes me happiest when I hear that people know of Resolution as a great clinic and have no idea who I am. I am confident that clients of all ages and ability levels can see any of our highly-qualified Physiotherapists and receive excellent care.” Resolution is always looking for ways to improve client care and uses a wide variety of advanced, research-based treatments to accelerate recovery for their clients. aymond Bolech has a lot to be proud of. The 55-year-old, who was inducted as one of the newest members of the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame in 2018, boasts numerous medals for his efforts in cross-country skiing over the years, including a gold medal in the 500-metre event as a member of Team Canada in Nordic Skiing at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea in 2013. Bolech spent nearly two decades honing the skills that ultimately took him to the top of the podium in PyeongChang. He credits a former girlfriend for getting him in to the sport. “He asked her to go bowling and she agreed if he’d go skiing,” said his mother, Rita Alkem. “I did cross country skiing for a long, long time,” he noted, adding he enjoyed it because he liked being out in the open.
Alkem recalls the day her son received the letter informing him he had qualified for the games in South Korea. “He had 10 days to decide if he wanted to participate,” she said. “While in Edmonton, he asked me if he could quit. I’d said sure, if he wasn’t enjoying it anymore he could retire. But, then he got the letter saying he’d qualified for Korea and it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing … Finally, after a couple of days, he decided he would give it one more year before retiring.” Bolech has been involved with Special Olympics since 1996 and was also actively involved in Track and Field as well as 5 Pin Bowling.

orn and raised in Pickering, Ontario, Dr. Tim Cheesman considers himself very much “a local boy” who enjoys skiing, mountain biking, hiking and camping. Graduating fromLaurentianUniversity with an Honours BSC, he travelled to the U.S. for his dental studies, receiving his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) from the University of Detroit, Mercy. But the pull of family and the homeland drew him right back to Canada. Dr. Cheesman’s admiration for Canadian values is reflected in how he runs his dental practice at Essa Dental. “Ethics are
important to me,” he says.
“
Ours is a welcoming dental practice. When you are a patient, you are part of our family. I think it’s the homey feel of our practice, because it’s in a house and not a strip mall.
”
Adevotedfamilymanwith three young children, Dr. Cheesman, understands the need for a soothing touch with people who are experiencing their first visit to a dentist. Initial visits for children are fun experiences, riding up and down in the chair, counting their
teeth, getting stickers, learning about the sounds and smells of a dental office. “We try to get kids involved in their dental care and motivate them to have the best possible oral hygiene.” “We just introduced a digital Panoramic x-ray machine to go along with our digital x-ray program,” says Dr. Cheesman. “All of our x-ray units are now digital which means less radiation to our patients. Our fees are according to the current year Ontario Dental Association fee guide and we do not exceed that guide. We offer our seniors a discount and that is why we have

itch Graszat wants to help put Canadianmade movies on the map. The 19-year-old Barrie filmmaker can’t recall a time when he hasn’t had a passion for movies — whether it’s watching them or making them. “Ever since I was little, I’ve been really into making my own short films with my sister (and) over the years we’ve submitted a few to film festivals all over Ontario and we have had some success with those,” he said. “It’s just something I love doing and something Barrie and the community has always been super supportive of with me.” Graszat, currently on a gap year from Film School at Ryerson University, won in the Most Promising Youth category at the 2018 Barrie Arts Awards. “It was super cool. I was really honoured to be considered … and I didn’t think I’d win so I was very surprised.” Graszat credits a former babysitter, who gifted the youngster his first camera, for pushing him towards making his own movies. “She taught me how to edit, and then I’ve basically been self-taught since then,” he said, adding he has
always been inspired by directors David Fincher, Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan. While he describes his own films as fun and funny, Graszat said his favourite movie would likely be The Social Network. “The main takeaway was it was the first movie I saw where nothing necessarily exciting happened but it’s like two hours and you’re completely engaged the whole time.” Graszat recently finished his first documentary entitled Memories For Sale — a film about his grandfather John Gardiner’s journey around Ontario on his Memories For Sale: Book and Other Stuff Tour, which he noted has been having some success at film festivals already. The documentary recently received a nomination for Best Canadian Film for the 2019 ReelHeART Film Festival in Toronto. Graszat has his sights set on the future, with plans to finish film school and ultimately make a name for himself in the industry. “I feel like Canadian film is underappreciated. I want to make movies that take place where I am from (and) think it would be really cool to make a movie in Barrie one day.”

QING’S CUISINE Szechuan & Thai Cuisine
With over 20 years of culinary experience, husband and wife, Qing Ni and Lien Tran have both worked in cities such as Toronto, Saskatoon, Collingwood, Vancouver and California. After so many dedicated years of hard work, in 2014, the husband-wife team have ventured off on their own to open up our Szechuan and Thai restaurant. Today, they are proud owners of Qing’s Cuisine in Barrie’s south end. Szechuan cuisine comes from Sichuan, a southwestern Chinese province which happens to contain a stretch of Asia’s largest river called the Yangtze. We love creating delighlightful and unique dishes with the Szechuan and Thai influences for our customers who continue to show their support for them week after week. Only the freshest ingredients are used in all of our creations. or 16 years now, Laurie Whitman has donned her bright blue vest and dedicated some of her valuable time as a member of Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s Blue Brigade. Whitman first signed on as a volunteer after her husband retired from his career. “He decided to keep working full time so I realized we wouldn’t be travelling and I wanted to be productive,” she said. “I signed up to see what I thought of it and went from there.” Initially a volunteer in the Imaging/Day Surgery Department, Whitman now spends her time in the Emergency Department – which seems better suited to her desire to be active. “A friend who worked in the Emergency Department suggested I join her given how busy it was and how active I am in my day-to-day life. I decided to shadow her one day and I absolutely loved it. I have been there ever since (and) never looked back.” Whitman also served as a PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) Volunteer. The
program at RVH takes high school students through an accident scenario from arrival in an ambulance all the way to what occurs in the trauma unit. “They see presentations from the coroner, doctors, police officers, etc. and it shows the perils of alcohol and drugs when driving. Sort of a ‘what if,’” she noted, adding the hope is students will share what they witnessed with their peers along with the impact it had on them … and maybe save a life in the future. “The volunteers were there to assist with students if they became overwhelmed with what they were witnessing,” she said. “It was a very meaningful program and seemed to have a great impact on the students who did participate.” Whitman, who volunteers regularly once a week (and more if needed), described RVH as a place where she goes to feel better too. “I tell everybody I’m going to my happy place,” she said. “It’s a wonderful feeling to give (and) when you leave, if you’ve made somebody smile, it’s very rewarding.”

nvolvement with numerous organizations and charities in Barrie is proving to be extremely helpful in her new role as honorary colonel for Base Borden. Jennifer Armstrong-Lehman officially became the third honorary colonel – and the first female – for the base in January. After graduating university with an education in political science, Armstrong-Lehman joined the Department of Foreign Affairs as a Foreign Service Officer before moving to Barrie with her husband Jeff. She quickly got involved with her new community, supporting organizations such as Hospice Simcoe and Gilda’s Club. While teaching part-time at Georgian College, Armstrong-Lehman, also found herself volunteering with numerous fundraising events. “It was all fun things I could do to help raise profiles,” she said, adding she has given her time to the women’s and children’s shelter in Barrie, Redwood Park, and even put on her dancing shoes in 2014 for the Easter Seals Dancing With the Stars fundraiser. Recently, her focus has been on her new role at Base Borden.
“I was approached about a year ago by then Commander at Base Borden, Chief Warrant Officer and Honorary Colonel Jamie Massie about my interest in taking over after he stepped down,” she said. “I was hugely honoured by the offer.” In this new role, Armstrong-Lehman acts as the ambassador between the military community they represent and the civilian community in which they live and work. “My responsibility is to find the bridges and connections between the base and the communities that it’s a part of to improve the community and also to improve the base,” she said, adding the ability to perform that service for Canada’s military and supporting its members is a huge honour. “It’s very exciting. I know a lot of people and do a lot of things in the community so there are all kinds of ways I can make connections. I was eager to find and build those bridges and add on the remarkable work that Jamie Massie did.”

oug Cundall’s passion for softball started as a young boy and is still going strong at 74 years young. First as a young man playing ball in Lefroy and then as an umpire for Softball Ontario, Cundall has called the diamond his second home for more than five decades. The Barrie resident retired four years ago from the baseball diamond after serving as an active umpire for 50 years. Cundall – a highly regarded official provincially, nationally and internationally — was the recipient of the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame’s Jean McCann Unsung Hero Award in 2018, and even has an award named after him by Softball Ontario. With so many years on the field, Cundall said he was always on the lookout for a new insult. “I would stand on the line and tell people it’s been years since I’d heard a new insult,” he quipped. “One of the biggest challenges is developing the ability to read people, distinguish between what had to be addressed and what could be ignored. Instructors will tell umpires ‘don’t have rabbit ears’ … you have to hear everything that is said
in order to be able to distinguish between what is inappropriate and what is just chatter.” Cundall has always had a real passion for softball, calling it a thinking game. “Contrary to what people think, you have to be constantly active in your mind as well as in your body.” Cundall has a number of titles under his ball cap too. He acquired Level 4 Umpire certification in both Fast Pitch and Slo-Pitch and was the first Level 4 umpire to be a member of Softball Canada’s Officiating Development Committee, a group that he noted helped shape the program country wide. In 1985, Softball Ontario made him Umpire in Chief (UIC) of Ontario’s Zone 6, an area covering Simcoe, Grey, Bruce and Dufferin Counties. Two years later, he became a member of Softball Ontario’s Umpire Committee. He has since become a development clinician, developing and presenting clinics to train new and existing umpires throughout the province.

ith more than 30 years of friendship under their belts, it’s not surprising Penni Michaud and Heather Wilson have been able to take their individual strengths and create an award-winning business that perfectly melds those skills. After several years growing their individual businesses (Michaud ran her own design business and Wilson a training and coaching business), the pair came together in early 2018 and launched Cheetah Fusion Creative Agency. The business helps new and existing businesses grow through assistance with coaching, marketing/advertising and design. Their first year has brought them quite a bit of success, having been nominated for and awarded a Barrie Chamber of Commerce 2018 New Business Award. “We were shocked,” acknowledged Michaud. “We still to this day have no idea who nominated us or how it came to be.” Wilson believes it is the duo’s complimentary skills that helped them stand out. “I can’t do what Penni does,” Wilson noted. “She’s a brilliant designer and definitely has the head for marketing and advertising.”
Added Michaud, “We built up our reputations beforehand with our own individual businesses so I think that helped. Just knowing us and knowing the kind of people we are has helped.” They also pride themselves on being responsive to everyone who reaches out, as well as their creativity and ability to think outside the box, pointed out Wilson. “We very much customize how we treat each individual client. It’s not a one-size fits all solution,” Wilson said. Allowing their clients to be who they are is yet another trait that has landed them such high praise. According to Michaud, “We embrace what’s unique and special about them. We will guide them and give our thoughts and opinions on things, but we never tell them the way it has to be.” “That allows them to be empowered to make decisions with our guidance,” added Wilson. The pair also prides themselves on their community involvement. “We support people wherever we can. Community is huge and giving back where you can is important,” Wilson said.

ngela Baldwin doesn’t just plan for good communities in her professional life, she does it in her personal life as well. The recipient of the 2019 Women In Business Heart & Soul Award, Baldwin is an urban planner and credits that training for her extensive interest and involvement in her community. “That’s what we do at our best is try to build good communities,” she said. Her involvement started out with Theatre By The Bay, where she served as board chairperson for approximately six years. She’s also been a member of The Barrie Film Festival Board for six years (the last two as chair); is part of a $3-million campaign for Redwood Park Community; and is a member of Ripples of Kindness and Gals That Give – to name just of a few. “I just like to support a lot of groups and there are lot of great groups in town,” she said. “I love this
city and I’ve lived here since I was young. I feel like it’s a very giving community. Her experiences in Barrie have led her to believe it must be one of the most giving cities in the country for its size. “Look at what we’ve raised! $65 million for RVH; $50 million for Georgian College; $3.5 million for Gilda’s Club – the list goes on and on. It’s quite remarkable.” Baldwin is a self-described extrovert, getting her energy from others. “When I’m among other people the ideas flow all the time and it’s hard to say no. I’ve learned to say no … but I feel it’s incumbent on us, especially if you’ve done well through your own community, to give back in some way – whether it’s financial or your time – because in the end you get way more out of it.”

olunteering has been a bit of a family affair for Shannon Best. Best, who has been volunteering weekly at the Salvation Army - Barrie Bayside Mission Centre for the last two years, said it was her desire to set a positive example for her daughter that prompted her to get involved. “She is now 11 and I felt like she needed to experience life from all angles. She started coming with me and then I never stopped going. I go once a week and I love it. “My daughter is very compassionate and I always knew that, but she literally sees no difference. I think that’s something we can all strive for. My goal was to ensure she looked at everybody as an individual and didn’t see anyone any different.” Best chose the Salvation Army Mission for a few reasons including the fact it was local and

“
Mental health service offers range of programs for kids, teens
New Path has essentially saved my daughter’s life,” says Trish, a New Path parent. “I can’t be any more direct than that. By finally having the support of a therapist, who allowed her to talk about the traumatic events that have led her here, to the support of the staff when things get rough, to a program manager who has showed her time and time again that he will not discharge her from the program until she is truly ready to lead a healthy life at home, my daughter has been able to not only stabilize but to flourish.” New Path Youth and Family Services of Simcoe County is an accredited, not-for-profit children’s mental health agency that provides a range of timely and responsive mental health services for children, youth and their families when and where they need them. New Path is now into its 19th year of operations. Forming from the amalgamation of four child and youth mental health service providers across Simcoe in 2000, New Path emerged as a consolidated, youth-friendly organization that spans all of Simcoe County.
The original vision of the amalgamation remains as true today as it did then and is reflected in New Path’s mission to lead and inspire positive change, and to promote mental health and wellness for children, youth, and families and their communities through an innovative, multi-service approach. We have continued this wonderful journey over the past year. One out of every five Canadian children and youth is affected by a mental health challenge. Mental health problems can be very serious and affect families from all backgrounds. Because we know that early intervention works, and because mental health can’t wait, New Path offers a range of child and youth mental health services to children, youth and their families from eight office locations in Simcoe County, as well as in many elementary and secondary schools. New Path has a team of dedicated and highly skilled staff providing mental health supports to children, youth and their families when and where they need them. Last year
alone, more than 2,100 children, youth and their families received mental health support through our agency. In order to ensure timely and responsive services, New Path offers child and youth mental health walk-in clinics that offer immediate mental health supports. This service can also be a first step to accessing additional mental health supports including groups for children and parents, short and long-term counselling and therapy, and a residential program. There are 6 walk-in clinic locations across Simcoe County in Alliston, Barrie, Bradford, Collingwood, Orillia and Midland. The Barrie location, 165 Ferris Lane, offers clinics on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. with the last appointment time at 5:30 p.m. To learn more about New Path Youth and Family Services, call 705-725-7656 or 1-866566-7656 (toll free from 905 area code) or visit www.newpath.ca.

live remarkably. Remarkable communities in Barrie | Collingwood | Orillia area
Mountain House
Active families and retirees are heading in droves to the Barrie-CollingwoodOrillia region for its natural beauty and world-class attractions. Once here, they are delighted to discover that Georgian International, a visionary developer with strong roots in the neighbourhood offers exactly what they’re in search of; thoughtful communities that are an authentic reflection of small town Canada.
BRAESTONE AT HORSESHOE VALLEY. COUNTRY ESTATE, RETHOUGHT. Gas-fired lanterns. A pumpkin patch. A Christmas tree farm. A baseball diamond encircled by corn stalks à la Field of Dreams. These idyllic features complement the farmhouse-style homes that make up the Braestone estate community, one hour north of the GTA in Horseshoe Valley Developed by Georgian International, the 229 homes sit on 556 acres in the Oro-Medonte township. These ingredients, known as “remarkables,” truly capture the 42
uniqueness of living here that appeals to prospective buyers. Bringing a unique approach to Ontario real estate is a hallmark of the company. “What we’re doing is not what other developers are doing,” says Mike Parker, vice-president, sales and marketing for Georgian International’s Real Estate Division. “In the planning process, we came up with community features that will enhance people’s lives, that will be part of their active lifestyles.” For example, a toboggan hill is a familyfriendly add-on, and a sugar shack can teach residents about the age-old practice of tapping maple trees. “Braestone buyers are typically nature lovers and enjoy being outdoors,” Parker notes, “and that’s why we created remarkables like a skating pond, a berry patch.” Parker adds that they regularly hold events for the community with the intention that the traditions will continue long after the
development is built out. Summer corn roasts with live music, a pancake breakfast fundraiser, and family day horse drawn sleigh rides are just a few. Besides successful sales, Braestone’s eyecatching offerings and impressive amenities are getting noticed by the industry. It was recognized as Best New Home Community of the Year in 2016 by the Canadian Home Builders Association, and its Discovery Centre was named 2016 Best Low Rise Homes Sales Office in Canada by the CHBA. Most recently, the “Thoroughbred” model was awarded Best Two-Storey Design up to 2,500 sq.ft. by the Ontario Homes Builders Association. Interior flourishes make the Braestone homes visually appealing, to say the least: floors come complete with tongue-andgroove maple or oak, and porcelain tile is found in the bathrooms, foyers and mudrooms. Master bathrooms showcase an island-style soaker tub.

Windfall
WINDFALL AT BLUE MOUNTAIN Winner of the Simcoe County Home Builders Awards’ Project Of The Year 2017. Georgian International’s popular Windfall is a 609-home community at the base of Blue Mountain that attracts buyers looking for “comfort, character, culture and community with a relaxed way of life,” says Parker. He notes that “it’s a place where nature and neighbourhood are in perfect balance… with community trails, Georgian Bay on one side, and the Niagara Escarpment on the other the beauty of the natural landscape is simply amazing.” In the heart of the community will be The Shed, a barn-inspired gathering place that will form the hub for residents to network, socialize and relax. Warm and hot water outdoor pools will further promote relaxed living. “The semis and detached homes differ from the look of Braestone units with more mountain-like colours and shades,” Parker remarks. But both will feature a trademark flourish for Georgian International developments: gas-powered lanterns.
Bridge at Windfall
Braestone
“There’s a romantic feel, an ambiance, to lanterns that is special and not done by anyone else,” Parker says. Buyers can select from well-appointed standard features or upgrade interior design packages that coordinate interior finishes, including flooring, cabinetry, countertops, lighting and other fixtures.
MOUNTAIN HOUSE AT WINDFALL Winner of the Simcoe County Home Builders Awards’ Project Of The Year 2018. Mountain House, adjacent to Windfall, launched Phase 1 to rave reviews. The first release of units was a huge sellout success and the first homeowners have already moved in this spring. When fully completed the 230-unit Mountain House will consist of two, three, and four-storey buildings. The terrace suites boast a chalet-style and complemented by a community building, a bike repair station, a sauna and relaxation room, hot and warm pools and an idyllic setting. “Like all our projects, the standard features, such as full, glass-walled showers and exterior gas lanterns, go above and beyond expectations,” says Parker.
Braestone
Close to Windfall and Mountain House are the historic areas of Collingwood, Blue Mountain Resort and Wasaga Beach, as all three regions are “remarkables” onto themselves for Ontario residents. Nearby activities include boating on Georgian Bay, fishing, snowboarding, ATV trail tours, water parks, golfing, sleigh rides and guided snowshoe hikes.
GEORGIAN INTERNATIONAL. AT HOME IN BEAUTIFUL SIMCOE COUNTY. Georgian International is not just carving its own path in the real-estate business, which began in 1985. The diverse company’s divisions include Georgian Chevrolet Buick GMC and Air Georgian Georgian International has made it their mission to create communities of artfully designed architecture inspired by small town Canada ,with amenities that improve peoples’ lives, giving people that sense of home ensconced among mountains, lakes, Christmas tree parks, and skating ponds. And if that isn’t being Canadian at its most grassroots, we don’t know what is.

RVH: Taking care of the present and looking to the future
H
ospitals are the heart of every community. And the team at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) takes that responsibility seriously as they continually ensure the health centre is a dynamic, growing and innovative organization which meets the healthcare needs of the people of this region. Looking back over the last year RVH has faced its share of challenges, while celebrating many achievements and successes. “Throughout the year our focus has remained the same; ensuring our patients and families have the safest, best experience possible,” says Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO. “But it is not enough to just focus on the issues of the day. Healthcare is ever evolving and to ensure RVH continues to meet this rapid pace of change we must always be looking to the future.” Future needs were recently met with the opening of two new regional programs. The Simcoe Muskoka Regional Heart Program opened in January
44
2018 and since then, more than 1,000 procedures have been completed. The next step for the heart program, targeted for 2020, is to function 24/7. That’s when paramedics will transport all North Simcoe Muskoka heart attack patients directly to RVH for treatment, bypassing other local emergency departments. The opening of the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Child and Youth Mental Health Program was also great news for youth in the region facing mental health challenges. To date, the program has helped more than 1,300 children and youth in the eightbed inpatient unit, through the outpatient program or the Day Program including an onsite classroom for high school students, a partnership with the Simcoe County District School Board. RVH brought more kidney care services
closer to home for Barrie and Alliston-area residents. In addition to the opening of a six-chair, in-hospital dialysis clinic in 2016, RVH nurses now provide dialysis treatments to critically-ill patients in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and has been designated as a Regional Renal Hub. The health centre also experienced some challenges. On most days RVH was over 110 per cent capacity, resulting in patients being cared for in untraditional spaces such as hallways and waiting rooms. To alleviate this burden, RVH opened a 40-bed Transitional Care Unit for patients with complex needs who have a firm discharge date, but face a temporary obstacle, such as needing additional physiotherapy before they can be safely discharged to the community.

2019-05-29 2:28 PM
Throughout the year, whether facing a challenge or celebrating a success, the team at RVH stayed true to the organizational vision of Make each life better. Together. And that dedication and teamwork was recently rewarded as RVH underwent three successful accreditation processes – RVH as an organization as well as the Laboratory and Stroke services. “RVH has once again been awarded the highest possible performance designation from Accreditation Canada – Accreditation with Exemplary Standing. RVH achieved a remarkable 99.6 per cent,” says Skot.
“Accreditation provides independent, third party confirmation that we are a safe, quality organization. It sends a clear, strong signal to our region that patients can have great confidence in the care they receive at RVH. It’s a testament to the dedication, knowledge and skill of the people who work, practice and volunteer at RVH.” As RVH continues to focus on providing exceptional care the team is also looking ahead to the patients of the future. The future of RVH includes both a redevelopment of the space at the current north campus on Georgian Drive as well as
a planning for a south campus in Innisfil or south Barrie, to serve rapidly-growing Innisfil, south Barrie, Bradford-West Gwillimbury area, where services are currently limited. “Charting RVH’s course for the future is a complex and lengthy process. That’s why our plan takes a graduated approach to developing facilities and services to meet the future healthcare needs of the people of this region, but never for a moment taking our eyes off the needs of the patients in the present,” says Skot.

The Real Cost of DIY Real Estate Your home is likely the largest asset you will ever posses in your lifetime. When contemplating selling your home, every measure and effort imaginable, should be taken to safeguard it; not only to mitigate potential losses, but to ensure that you are maximizing the highest possible return on your investment as well. Over the last several years, we have seen a variety of packaged DIY alternatives springing up in the world of real estate. While each brand may demonstrate subtle differences in their offerings, their general objective is the same, the packaging of do-it-yourself real estate for the consumer. Drawn by the misconception of ease and significant savings, and much to the chagrin of licenced Realtors and remorseful consumers everywhere, the allure of DIY real estate is too strong for some to resist. After all, how hard can it be to throw a for sale sign on the lawn?
Michael Stuart Webb THE MICHAEL STUART WEBB TEAM
RE/MAX® HALLMARK CHAY REALTY. 855.MSW.TEAM
team@michaelstuartwebb.com michaelstuartwebb,com
The truth of the matter is this, selling real estate is significantly more complex than installing a sign. Professional Realtors are dedicated and committed to upholding the highest possible ethical standards, spending years learning about effective marketing techniques, the art of negotiations, how to author effective contracts, and the virtuosity of navigating the intricacies of real property law. Licenced Realtors will also spend the rest of their professional careers improving those skills and remaining abreast of ever-changing legislation that affects the sale of real property. These are, frankly, must have skills if you wish to effectively market and sell your home for the highest possible sale price, and do so in a manner that protects your legal rights and interests. Sadly, and all too often, we are regaled by the
litigious stories of the unsuspecting homeowner who has been drawn in by the promise of the preceived economical alternatives to hiring a professional, oftentimes with catastrophic results. When considering the DIY alternatives, one should always read the fine print and ask themselves the following questions;
1
How will the DIY brand I align myself with market my property, if at all? Will they be taking professional photographs and video tours? Will they be printing feature books? Will they be booking appointments on my behalf? Where will my property be marketed?
2
Upon which local real estate boards will my property be listed (oftentimes they aren’t listed on local boards where there will be found by local Buyer’s agents)?
3
Will the DIY brand I choose help me negotiate an Agreement of Purchase and Sale at offer time? If so, is there an additional fee for this? Are they licenced and qualified to dispense this advice?
4
Does the DIY brand I choose to run with know my local marketplace and do they understand the nuances of my particular neighbourhood?
5
Is DIY really the most cost effective alternative when considering the potential risks?
The Michael Stuart Webb Team is comprised of a group of highly skilled professional market-segment specialists, hand selected and groomed to be the best of the best in their fields of expertise. We are not jacks of all trades, but rather the masters. For more information on DIY real estate, and other valuable real estate information, visit our blog at www.michaelstuartwebb.com/Blog.php
