“My husband and I recently sold our rural property through The Peggy Hill Team. They went above and beyond in helping us get our house sold in spite of a changing housing market. They understood our needs and often went well beyond our expectations. We would highly recommend The Peggy Hill Team to anyone thinking of selling or buying real estate. A gold standard! ”

troud resident and Innisfil Historical Society member Donna Wice said her husband has nicknamed her the nosiest person in town, thanks to her work on tracking down history. Wice is part of a committee collecting information for Innisfil Review 2020 — when the town celebrates its 200th

anniversary. And Wice is constantly asking people questions about their story. “I haven’t done a review like this before, I’ve done farms or war, it’s eye opening,” Wice said. “I don’t go anywhere anymore where I don’t mention it.” She’s compiling stories to put into a book, but isn’t just looking for the founding families. One of the sections focuses on farmers, with a "Farms and Food Forever" chapter. “We didn’t just want the same farm-

She has met with young farmers to get them to tell their stories. “I’ve spoken with four or five dairy farmers, three of them are women. They are hardworking, balancing farm life and home life.” One of them is Julie Neto, who has continued the family farm despite a major fire more than a decade ago. “The goal of this section is to give a chance for the younger men and women to reveal things that happen on a regular basis and get a better under-

Farmers today can’t survive on Innisfil farming alone and while equipment has been modernized, to help out, there are still plenty of challenges to operating a farm, she added. Another section Wice is working on is getting businesses to share their history. “We’re trying to identify who has the oldest business in Innisfil,” she said.

“We’re doing research to find out. It makes sense that it might be a marina and we know Monto Reno Marina has been around for at least 50 years.” Trotter's gas station in Gilford is close to hitting the mark and Monto Reno Marina is also getting up there. But Wice also wants to hear from newcomers about why they moved here. One woman Wice spoke to is an

accounting student who works at the Tanger Outlet Mall. Her family came here from Sri Lanka. “It’s a history book and people seem to think you have to have done something substantial to be in it,” Wice said. “Everyone who has come here has a unique path and let’s get it on the record.” To add your story to the book, email info@innisfilhistoric.ca.

What does Cookstown’s future look like? Known as Innisfil’s Cozy Corner, the village that was once known for its bustling antique district has struggled to keep many of its downtown shops from closing over the years. But with new housing developments popping up and more on the horizon, the local economy could see a resurgence. Jenn Halliday, owner of Halliday House & Co., in the downtown district believes Cookstown is capable of making a comeback. Halliday’s store just celebrated its anniversary, surviving the crucial first year in business. Halliday and her husband have raised their family in the sleepy village, moving there about 20 years ago, during a time when Cookstown was under a development freeze due to a lack of municipal drinking water. That changed in 2013, when water was piped in from Lake Simcoe after developers agreed to front the $6.3-million cost. Since then, the village has seen estate subdivisions rise and infill housing built. Halliday said the new residents haven’t flocked to local merchants, but she has seen some of the newbies in her store. “People are still adjusting to this small town living. So many folks have come

up from Vaughan or Brampton or Mississauga. A lot of them are commuters, so you might not seen them during the week. But I have had folks come in.” A major hurdle that continues to challenge Cookstown’s commercial district is the heavy traffic that flows directly through the village, much it from the Honda plant in Alliston. The challenge for store owners is getting those motorists to stop when they are caught in traffic. “This morning just trying to get across the street to the post office was tough,” she said. “So much of my conversations are with people who say, ‘Oh my gosh, I drive by here every day and I never get to stop.” Still, positive vibes are in the air with a new grassroots committee called Cookstown Action that is bringing citizens together to brainstorm. Heritage enthusiast Roger Johnson, a member of Cookstown Action, said the local economy must be bolstered before the village’s new heritage district can thrive and become an attraction. “Everybody’s really anxious to get going on this,” he said. The challenge is to pinpoint what will keep Cookstown residents shopping locally and make passersby stop to enjoy the village. Like Halliday says, “Everybody wants it to make it’s way back, but what’s going to be the draw?”

enerations of Eric Forbes’ family has grown up in the Belle Ewart/Lefroy area and it’s been a no-brainer to volunteer his time wherever he can. He’s a Lefroy volunteer firefighter who enjoys being engaged in community events. “I was involved at Georgian College as president of the student council, and was there for Shineramas and Frosh Week,” Forbes said. He also put time in as an auxiliary OPP officer in New Tecumseth during events like the annual Potato Festival before trading in his hat for a firefighting helmet. “My papa was a volunteer in this community for 30 or 40 years. I have family roots here, with four or five generations growing up here,”

he said. “If I’m available, I try to get involved.” Today, he participates in the annual Fire on Ice perch derby, the firefighter Boot Drive and barbecue, Canada Day and Remembrance Day parades and more. He’s helped with Christmas donations and wrapping presents, as well as the Fill the Barn event at the Lefroy arena. “I grew up watching the fire trucks drive down the road with lights and sirens at parades, getting tours of the trucks, and having them attend public school events, as a volunteer firefighter now I am able to attend these events. As the firefighter that hopefully the children and public respect and look up to as I did when I was growing up.”

Christmas comes but once a year, but Innisfil’s Christmas 4 Kids provides for children in need year-round

Debra Harrison/Submitted

Christmas For Kids provides year-round joy hristmas comes but once a year, but Innisfil’s Christmas 4 Kids provides for children in need year-round. “We started off with two churches doing what churches do,” Debra Harrison, one of the founders, said about the organizations origin about 25 years ago. The group adopted families in need, but slowly started working with schools, other churches, and the Innisfil Food Bank to identify those in need. “They come to us. We don’t really go to them,” Harrison said. “We treat our clients with respect.” This past Christmas, the organization provided for roughly 335 children in need by supplying the makings of Christmas dinner including a turkey, non-perishable food, and a gift certificate for perishable items, as well as a gift for each child. After the holidays, Harrison said the organiza-

tion helped five families through emergency situations. For families in crisis, the organization provides food, clothing, and other supplies. “If there are teenagers having a difficult time, we provide backpacks, school supplies, and hygiene products,” Harrison said. Throughout the year, Christmas 4 Kids coordinates Easter and Thanksgiving food drives, provides assistance with back to school supplies, and ensures no child misses out on what other children enjoy. The birthday present program offers those in need the gift of giving. Children who are invited to a birthday party but cannot afford to purchase a gift, get to choose a toy and a card from the non-profit’s selection, pack it in a gift bag and attend the party. More information about Christmas 4 Kids is available at www.christmasforkids.ca.

eing an Innisfil farmer means the winter is the best time for Anne Kell to travel abroad. Already in 2018, she’s been to India and the Philippines — both on humanitarian trips. Last year, Kell received the Community Volunteer Award for her volunteer work, both in and out of the town. She’s a Rotarian, a longtime member of the Innisfil library board, an active member of Gilford United Church and, with husband Larry, they participate in the Loaves and Fishes program. The couple just went to India in January, distributing 6,000 kits for Sleeping Children Around the World. After three weeks back home, the couple left for the Philippians for 11 days, for a personal project. “One of the farmers with Loaves and Fishes has a growing project,” Kell said. “For a lot of years, sugar cane was grown and the land was badly used.” The group bought 20 acres on the side of a volcano and is teaching farmers better growing methods. Kell brought some small equipment in her check-in baggage to show the difference in shallow tilling instead of plowing. One of the crops they are trying to introduce is sweet potatoes. “I feel like it’s something I need to do,” she said. “It’s important to us. We are lucky to have the opportunity to live in a place like Canada. Once you travel the world and see how hard it is to make a life in other countries.”

Soaring high with the Huronia Remote Control Club Andrew Famiglietti

Now in his 70s, Andrew Famiglietti is one of the directors with the Huronia Radio Control Club, with 11 remote controlled airplanes in his basement

s a kid, Andrew Famiglietti remembers laying in the grass looking up at planes. “I was fascinated with them and what they could do, especially in the way of aerobatics,” Famiglietti said. Now in his 70s, he’s one of the directors with the Huronia Radio Control Club (HRCC), with 11 remote controlled airplanes in his basement. He bought his first control line tether plane after wandering into a Toronto hobby store. “Since I couldn’t afford a full-size aerobatic plane, I opted for models,” he said. “You could do loops, figure eights or fly inverted if you were good at it.” They might be trickier to fly since the pilot isn’t in the cockpit, but they are safer, he said. He was around when the HRCC first formed in 1973 with less than 15 members, and served as president three years later. He also started flying sailplanes with the Central Ontario Glider Group in Tottenham. Famiglietti admits he’s spent more time building and innovating model planes than flying them. “I’ve been fooling around for days making a muffler for a gas-powered aluminum airplane,” he said, with the grease stains on his fingers to prove it. Around 2002, he got his own private pilot’s licence, flying out of the Huronia and Lake Simcoe Regional airports. But after three scary incidents inflight, he decided his feet were safer on the ground. Now, he’s one of the directors of the Innisfil group, which has about 50 members of all ages. The HRCC field is in Stroud, on Victoria Street east of Yonge Street. To learn more about the club, visit http://www.rcworld.ca/HuroniaRadioControlClub/.

Innisfil library growing its own seed library Bridget Indelicato

20 Our Innisfil 2018

hree years ago, Bridget Indelicato sowed the seeds that flourished into the Innisfil Seed Library. A volunteer program run by the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library allows residents to sign out seeds at the beginning of the season and hopefully, if all goes according to plan, return seeds to the library at the end of the season. Indelicato, who runs the program, said the library runs on an honour system; you don’t even have to be a member of the Innisfil library. You sign the seeds out and try your best to return seeds at the end of the season. “I knew we’d probably give out more than we’d get back,” Indelicato said. “But it’s getting people thinking about growing their own food and beautifying their properties and attracting pollinators.” The seed library has hundreds of varieties of seeds, from veggies to flowers, most of which, Indelicato said, has been donated by the community. “We’re slowly building the stock to be a lot of

locally grown seeds,” Indelicato said. The idea of a seed library is not a new one. “There are seed libraries all over the world,” Indelicato said. The Innisfil library just needed someone to get the ball rolling. Indelicato, a seed advocate, got involved and has been cultivating the library ever since. Throughout the season the library hosts workshops related to gardening to teach gardeners technique for saving their seeds and getting the most out of their garden. On March 31, the Innisfil library hosted Seedy Saturday, another not-so-new idea, where a number of vendors sell local wares, as well as seeds, including a selection of heirloom and organic varieties. The seed library currently has two locations, one at the Lakeshore branch and one at the Cookstown branch that opened last year. More information about the Innisfil Seed Library is available at https://www.facebook. com/innisfilseedlibrary.

hen Mike Symes is not working as the fire prevention officer for the Innisfil fire department, he is probably coaching rugby. Where does he find the time? Usually on his lunch breaks or during his vacation time, and it has not gone unappreciated. Symes was recognized with a Community Volunteer Award from the Town of Innisfil last year for his coaching of the Nantry Shores Secondary School varsity girl’s rugby teams and the Barrie rugby women’s team. The high school girl’s team nominated Symes for the award. “It's hard to find rugby coaches so when I heard they were looking for help at the high school I threw my hat in,” he said. He’s going on five years now as a community coach there. The sport, he said, is very unique in that woman and men, boys and girls, all play by the same rules, even when it comes to physical contact. “I find it very empowering for the girls and for the women to play a sport where society hasn’t changed the rules on them,” he said. Even though he has the title of coach at the high school, he takes it as an opportunity to spread fire safety messages too. “The high school kids are a really tough age to talk about fire prevention with,” he said. Symes may be the guy in the school, but he said it's only possible because the fire chief and fire department support him. “It’s part of the fire service that you give back to the community,” he said. “This is just a unique way that I’ve been able to do it.”

arol Hill loves pitching in. The Innisfil woman, who moved to the town about a decade ago, has helped tidy the 7th Line as part of the annual Pitch-In Day. She began volunteering for the cleanup and beautification initiative about nine years ago. Hill usually cleans the roadside and ditches between Quarry Road and the stream just west of the GO Transit train tracks. “I wish there was no need to do this,” she said. “We found there was a lot of litter and trash around the neighbourhood. I didn’t like the look of it. A friend mentioned Pitch-In and my husband and I have continued on all these years. It’s just making things look better.” Hill has found an eclectic variety of trash during Pitch-In, including tires, fast food containers, interlock brick and even parts of a bra. “Some people seem to think that some areas

of our community are dumping grounds; it’s just taking pride in your community,” she said. “You don’t want to drive down your own street and see cardboard, water bottles and bags blowing around.” This year, the event will be held on May 12. It runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. A volunteer appreciation barbecue will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at the Innisfil Recreation Complex at 7315 Yonge St. Garbage bags, gloves and refreshments will be provided. Sign-in takes place before 9 a.m. at the Stroud, Alcona, Cookstown and Lefroy fire stations. Residents who register for the event by May 4 will be entered into a prize draw. For more, email pitch-in@innisfil.ca or call 705-4363740, 2410.

he Good Brothers played at Peter Chitty and Marlene Campbell’s housewarming party, in the big, empty basement of the house Chitty built. Now, Chitty invites anyone interested in acoustic music, often bluegrass, to take in a live show in his home through Music Up Close Concerts. “It’s not a business,” Campbell said. “We lose money on every concert.” Entry fees are a suggested donation usually between $25 and $30, and the money goes directly to the band. If they sell merchandise, they keep that too. Chitty and Campbell provide water, coffee, and snacks, and some patrons may donate to that fund. “People come and they have a good time,” said Campbell. Campbell said when they decided to start putting on shows in their basement, Chitty said he wanted to do it right. They bought a sound board and speakers, they bought padded chairs so attendees would be comfortable.

They even lined the floor with Persian rugs. Since 2008, bluegrass, country, and folk bands have shared the stage, “like you wouldn’t believe,” said Campbell. “We just want to make people smile.” On a sold-out night, their street is packed with cars. The neighbours don’t mind, Campbell said, while the basement wasn’t intentionally built to host concerts, it’s virtually soundproof. It’s a refreshing experience for the performers, Campbell said people come to listen to the music. Shows run spring through fall.Neither Chitty nor Campbell have musical backgrounds, they’re just dedicated fans. “Peter loves to listen, and he loves music,” said Campbell. “He wants to promote acoustic music and keep it going.” More information about Up Close House Concerts is available at http://musicupclose.com.

elonging to the South Simcoe 4-H Club has brought many opportunities for Gilford’s Kristen Gardner. “I’ve been involved in 4-H since I was nine and I started out because my sister was involved,” she said. “I heard about a mini horse farm and immediately fell in love.” Gardner’s mom grew up on a farm and she wanted her daughters to experience being around animals. Gardner might have joined for horses, but said many other opportunities opened up for her to explore. “There’s cooking, there’s a sewing club, there’s recycling club, crops, dairy, hiking — so many,” she said. “I can decide which ones I’m interested in and learn so much about it.” Now 16, Gardner said her favourite experience has been working with dairy cows. “I joined the club not knowing anything about dairy cows and basically started showing them. Now I have a job on a farm milking cows, on the Kell-Wood Farm.” Gardner also spent time volunteering at Sheldon Creek Dairy. She’s still involved with the club because she never stops learning. “There’s a youth adventure camp, which I’ve gone to for two years and you meet people from all over the place. I’m still in touch with people I met four years ago from Quebec.” Through 4-H, Gardner has built up confidence and public speaking skills, serving as the MC for a few banquets. She also painted part of a mural at the Alliston Feed Mill, thanks to her involvement with the club. And now, Gardner lives on a hobby farm, with two miniature horses and a pot-bellied pig named Wilbur.

Melissa Biggar Burbidge’s heart can’t say no Melissa Biggar Burbidge

elissa Biggar Burbidge knows what it is like to experience a Christmas miracle. She knows what it is like to need a little help, and, with the help of other Innisfil residents, she knows what it's like to give back. Burbidge organizes 12 Families of Christmas, which sees residents collect toys, clothes, gift cards, and even Christmas trees to give to families that are in need during the holiday season. It started with a friend wanting to help one family at Christmas, and has grown significantly over five years. Last year they were able to help about 180 families in Simcoe County. “It’s just something I have to do,” she said. “If I see someone in despair I just can’t turn away.” Her husband, Billy, also helps with the cause. Biggar Burbidge meets all the families that are nominated to see if there is a genuine need — and there is a lot of need in the community, she said. It can be tough to see that need so she tries to stay in touch to offer more support year-round so it is not just a Band-Aid solution. Her skill is bringing people together. The 12 Families of Christmas group has about 800 people from all over the county who want to help. “It feels great,” she said of being able to help others. “My heart just can’t say no.” While she may be the organizer, it takes a community to pull off a Christmas miracle. “Everybody always thanks me,” she said. “Don’t thank me, thank everybody else.”

ean Russell, 15, has over 140 hours that his high school has recorded. He certainly has even more than that since he started volunteering in Grade 8. The Nantyr Shores Secondary School student was recognized for his volunteering efforts last year with a community volunteer award from the Town of Innisfil. Two summers ago he volunteered at the Innisfil summer camp, helping out with supervision. He has also volunteered at the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library, and the YMCA. “It was pretty fun,” Sean said of volunteering at the library. One the most fun things he did was help out with the library’s Minecraft sessions, where he taught kids about the game and assisted people having computer problems. Sean would “definitely” recommend volunteering to other people his age.

“Even more than just getting your hours, it is an experience, it just feels good,” he said. “It shows commitment and responsibility.” Sean admits his mom pushed him to volunteer. “I think it is a good idea for kids to volunteer because you have to give back to the community,” Tanya Russell, his mother, said. Sean appreciates it now, especially after being recognized by the town. He has a job now and says that the volunteering definitely helped him get hired. “It makes me happier she did that knowing it will help me later in life,” he said. Sean plays hockey, which has taken away some of his time to volunteer, but he is still finding ways to give back. Japanese exchange students are coming to his school and he has offered to help make them feel at home.

or more than two years, Mildred Gonzalez has run the Silver Club program at the Innisfil YMCA. The program is a potluck luncheon once a month for seniors to meet new friends and sample different recipes. Gonzalez started the idea after she had a concussion years ago. “I was afraid to come back (to work) at the YMCA, so I started volunteering at Whispering Pines Retirement Residence,” she said. There, she made connections with residents and realized there was a void in Innisfil. “I told myself I have to do something for seniors,” she said. “They only had exercise classes here. We need something more social.” At first, the Silver Club was every three months and started with 26 guests. That num-

And if you can’t drive anymore, you are isolated,” she said. “We have one gentleman who is still active and working at 83. His wife is in a nursing home and this is one of the places he can take her.” Gonzalez has been overwhelmed with the support, both from the YMCA and the community. “People have performed for us with no strings attached. If I say I need plates, cups or milk, (our guests) all come with donations.” Over time, some of the guests have become like family to Gonzalez. “I feel good when I’m with them.”

ilvia Pedrazzi has a passion for the environment. The longtime local volunteer and current environmental liaison for the South Simcoe Streams Network and Nottawasaga Futures has helped Innisfil honour its local watershed through the Celebrate Lake Simcoe event each summer for the past few years. While the event is on hiatus in 2018 to reorganize for next year, it has played an integral role in the town’s summer event scene for several years. Celebrate raises awareness of the history and current and future environment of the Simcoe watershed. “I’ve always loved nature,” Pedrazzi said. “There’s a lot of impact from what we do, as people.” Her commitment to the local environment stretches back years. She served on an environmental advisory committee in New Tecumseth in the 1990s and started a streams committee for the municipality. She’s led

stream restoration work throughout Innisfil, and has played an integral role in increasing local awareness and engagement in environmental restoration efforts. The streams committee has been honoured by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority as a ‘conservation champion.’ “I always thought volunteerism was something that was needed in every community,” Pedrazzi said. “I learned there was a lot of need in the community. We’re trying to bring hands-on opportunities to youth and all age groups. We work with the schools. There may not be a passion for the environment in that person’s life, but at least they certainly respect the environment. And there are people who really become passionate about it.” Pedrazzi is organizing a tree-planting event for Innisfil on May 6. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Celebrate committee can contact Pedrazzi at silvia@nottawasaga.com.

Falling in love with Innisfilm Amanda Quibell

Innisfilm is a fledgling nonprofit organization that wants to create movies showcasing area talent

manda Quibell never thought she’d fall in love with filmmaking. The Innisfil woman was first introduced to the Innisfilm Project when she took her daughter to a monthly meeting. The teenager was the one who had an interest in the craft — specifically, acting. “I thought it would be a really great opportunity to check out what this group was doing,” Quibell said. “I’ve always been a writer, but I’m not really trained in performance. We went to the meeting and we’d brainstorm different scripts. It is crazy fun. It’s been this really unique and amazing experience.” Then, in October 2015, the group shot a short film called Study Hacks French Test. It was uploaded to YouTube two years ago and has been a bit of a local internet sensation by generating more than 4,200 views. “It was just a silly idea that we came up with,” Quibell said. “But people really like it. It’s us in the library making this goofy little film. What’s amazing is the community response.” The group has completed other projects, but members are still in the learning stages of filmmaking, she said. Innisfilm is a fledgling nonprofit organization that wants to create movies showcasing area talent. Volunteers plan to focus on making independent, fictional films worthy of a Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) entry. “Our dream is to do for short-film festivals, but we’re not quite there yet,” she said. “We need to work on editing and bringing things together. But it’s been this really cool thing that grew.” In 2016, they received an Inspiring Innisfil grant to buy an advanced video camera. udy Anne Carter had just finished giving a speech about community outreach when she got into an accident that changed the trajectory of her life. The former Peel Region employee was on her way back to work from speaking to a Rotary club in Brampton when she got into a serious car accident and suffered a catastrophic brain injury. “That was the end of my career and really leaving the house,” Carter said. For months after the accident, she continued to suffer the effects of a brain injury, including environmental sensitivities and speech problems. One of her therapists suggested she get back out in the community to work on overcoming those challenges. Somewhat ironically, it was suggested she join the Innisfil Rotary Club. She attended the club's meet and greet.

Judy Anne Carter

“It was a scary place for me,” she said. That was seven years ago. Carter says her first couple years in the club served as therapy, helping her readjust to the typically normal activities like sitting in a large group and dealing with several ongoing conversations. She has gone from sitting at the meetings as therapy to being a key organizer of several events including Lights and Wishes at the YMCA, a five-kilometre run, the club’s annual Family Fun Day, which happens on June 9 this year, and most recently, a Caribbean night at the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library. “With Rotary, what I learned was the kindness and the respect and how supportive they were,” she said. “I’ve come a long way in my healing journey, where else would I have learned to reintegrate into the community and work with the community?”

Celebrating 25 Years!! Proudly Serving Residents

Alcona is seeing new restaurants and stores as the housing boom brings in enough customers to attract major brands, which brings more jobs. The staff at the new Starbucks, which opened March 8, includes manager Shannon Hyndes (left), Emma Rose Dillane, Jordon Fiedehen, Cary Pokrywa.

Just a few years ago, a Starbucks in Alcona — or anywhere in Innisfil — would have only been a dream for the popular chain’s local customers. Grabbing that Frappuccino or vanilla latte would have meant yet another trip into Barrie. But the time has come. Starbucks and other major brand restaurants and retailers are locating in Alcona, Innisfil’s urban hub, as the housing boom continues to take hold. New homes are being built just a stone’s throw from the new Starbucks, which opened in the No Frills plaza at Sideroad 20 and Innisfil Beach Road on March 8. “With all the new houses being built, there’s enough business coming in,” manager Shannon Hyndes said. Innisfil’s economic development catalyst Dan Taylor agrees residential growth creates more demand for retail, like restaurants, fast-food, stores and a variety of different businesses. In a word — progress. “We’ve noticed that our demographic in particular has been creating a demand for middle-class targeted retail,” Taylor said. “We’re seeing that take form in the opening of Canadian Tire, Starbucks and many of other exciting new businesses.” The No Frills plaza has also seen a new Harvey’s/Swiss Chalet and several other undisclosed stores are still under construction in the plaza. Alcona, which was home only to Home

Hardware and Shoppers Drug Mart 10 years ago, is attracting more and more businesses and new subdivisions continue to take shape. “Innisfil has historically been undersupplied with retail. Now that we’re getting that momentum, we’re attracting the attention of major retailers,” the town’s manager of land use planning Tim Cane said. That’s good news for new homebuyers in the large Sleeping Lion development in south Alcona, San Diego Homes in central Alcona and the Belle Aire Shores and Lormel Homes subdivisions in the Lefroy area. Without Alcona, shopping destinations in Bradford and Barrie are hardly convenient. Alcona also has proposals for condominiums in the commercial district to bring more high-density housing to an area that was once dominated by older cottage-style homes on sprawling properties. The province has introduced new density targets for municipalities like Innisfil, dictating that growth should be contained in Alcona, Lefroy and Cookstown. Cane is mindful about mixing higher condo buildings in historic neighbourhoods. “The official plan wants to maintain the character of the neighbourhoods people have fallen in love with, but at the same time, creating a new character for new developments,” he said.
