Sutton’s Going on... in Simcoe County
BILL KINDOU BROKER OF RECORD
Top 100 Employer speaks out on Simcoe county Real Estate
SUTTON GROUP INCENTIVE REALTY INC., BROKERAGE
More and more clients are turning to the expertise and market knowledge of Sutton’s professional agents and leaving with a smile and a good review. Bill Kindou, Broker of Record at Sutton Group Incentive Barrie, purchased the business in 2002 from Don Jerry, who had owned it previously since 1993. In the past 17 years since taking ownership, Bill has seen tremendous development and been able to grow the staff from 40 agents at time of purchase to over 186 including staff. With ten branch offices including the Barrie main office, Barrie Branch offices, Orillia, Alliston, Innisfil and Collingwood offices, as well as Angus, Port Carling and Gravenhurst coming soon, Sutton Group Incentive is situated right where clients require, it’s ready to get down to business, whether that be anything from leasing property to selling your home or a piece of land. “We handle residential, commercial, farms, vacant lands and leases,” Bill explained, noting agents are ready and enthusiastic to work with clients to achieve positive outcomes on a variety of transactions. “For any real estate needs just call one of our offices.” With a balanced and fair-minded business approach, Bill has been able to create an environment where clients and sales representatives alike thrive and grow. they always have top-notch computers and the most modern technology to do their job at peak efficiency and with all the latest tools. Bill also conducts weekly in-house training for agents, keeping them on top of market trends, changing regulations, and every other aspect of the real estate business. By fostering training and leadership programs for staff, giving constant attention to encouraging excellent business relationships and upholding a business model built around a cost-controlled, creative approach, Sutton continues to be able to offer the outstanding service and results for which it is known. As it continually adapts to the latest market developments Sutton stands at the apex of industry, technology and marketing moving forward.
country. After its steady growth since founding, Sutton now has a total of around 200 offices across Canada and over 8,000 sales representatives. Sutton’s core philosophy and business model puts the realtor and client, rather than the real estate agency, at the centre of every transaction, giving priority to an optimal customer-sales representative relationship and smooth, rewarding transaction. Selling a home can be a challenging task, but with the confidence, professionalism and market knowledge of a Sutton sales representative it becomes that much easier. n object in motion tends to stay in motion – and the same can be said for Innisfil’s Al Gilchrist. Gilchrist has always led a pretty busy and active life, he admits, so when he retired it wasn’t really in his nature to put his feet up and relax. “It’s hard to then just sit back and do nothing,” he said. “In fact, it’s not a good idea. My wife and I have always been involved in the community ever since the kids were young, and now that they’re grown up, we do what we can. It gives you a good feeling when you can do things and help people.” In addition to being involved with the local Pitch In Committee, the Remembrance Day Committee, and assisting with fundraising for the new Rizzardo Health and Wellness Centre, Gilchrist is a longtime member of the Innisfil Rotary Club. “I saw there was a club about nine years ago and was interested. I knew they did good work in the community and in the world,” he said, noting he’s been a member since the club’s second year in exis-
tence. “We’ve been building a club ever since. It was obvious we needed to work hard and keep it going.” Early on in his involvement, Gilchrist took part in a Rotarian-led humanitarian trip and described the experience as “life changing”. “We were given the task of being the lead club to go to the Dominican Republic and help the Haitian people who were trapped in villages between the two countries. We went down there with doctors and dentists and really tried to change their lives. He’s been able to take part in the trip several times – once with his wife and another with his daughter. “It’s really a remarkable experience to be part of something like that.”

ou can’t make it far within the hallways at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) without running into a member of the Blue Brigade – the hospital’s army of dedicated volunteers. Innisfil’s Alan Leslie is one of those nearly 750 proud volunteers and “blames” his wife for getting him involved. “We moved here about seven years ago after retiring (and) my wife prompted it by basically telling me I wasn’t allowed to spend all my time sitting around her house forcing me to go and find things to do,” he quipped. That was about 18 months ago. Although the majority of his volunteer hours are spent in the Pre-Surgery Treatment Clinic, Leslie has been involved in quite a few programs at different programs during his time there, including interviewing visitors and getting feedback on the organization’s 20-year-plan, participating in the annual Santa Shuffle fundraiser, as well as selling tags at different
locations around Innisfil to help raise money for various RVH initiatives. While volunteering behind the desk at the clinic, Leslie noted he puts together patient charts and greets patients when they sign in. It is a role he enjoys. “I just have a hoot. I am there for a few hours one or two days a week and I just really feel good when I leave. It’s just a lot of fun.” In addition to devoting time to health care at the hospital, Leslie also provides rides to fellow Sandy Cove Acres residents who need to get to medical appointments, and has been asked to help coordinate volunteers for the new Rizzardo Health & Wellness Centre (RHWC) – a state-of-the-art, health and wellness focused centre currently under construction at the corner of Yonge Street and Innisfil Beach Road, “I like that idea of doing something close to home right in my community.”

loria Noseworthy has always considered herself a bit of a champion for individuals with special needs in her community. Ever since volunteering at her son’s school nearly two decades ago, the former Innisfil resident has made it her mission to help him — and others like him — learn the skills needed to live an active and productive life. “My son is autistic and special needs and for some reason I seem to have the knack for that type of thing,” Noseworthy said. “It just comes naturally to me. They just need some help basically and I have kind of been the voice for that. They just need people to stop and listen to them and help them as much as they can.” With the help of family and friends, Noseworthy created the Crossroads Community Centre, a place where adults with special needs can gather to learn and grow their social skills or just get together. “At the age of 21, our adults are officially adults.
The waiting lists (for programs) is extremely long and there’s nothing for them to do, or a place where they can gather and learn. I created the centre so there is a place that’s just for them.” Noteworthy said her continued involvement is driven by her desire to make sure her son – and other adults with special needs – can take care of themselves when the time comes. “Yes, I have been an advocate, but it’s more because one day I am not going to be here. We have to make our adults to be the best they can be. If we can’t show them then they’re not going to learn,” she said. “People learn something new every day. Our guys, it may take them 100 times, but once they’ve got it they’ve got it.” MP Innisfil-Barrie John Brassard awarded Noseworthy with the 2018 Individual Volunteer Award.

D
eb McGrath started her journey in the world of volunteering as what she calls a “reluctant environmentalist”. Now, many years – and many initiatives later – McGrath has become a full-fledged environmentalist thanks to her involvement with organizations like Ladies of the Lake Conservation Association, The Leslie Drive Environmental Assessment Committee and most recently as president of the Innisfil Action Association. “I live on a road called Leslie Drive – there are two in Alcona – and smack in the middle is an area called Leonard’s Beach Provincially Significant Wetland. The plan was at one point to put Leslie Drive straight through the middle of it. My former neighbour and I got involved and took part in the Leslie Drive Environmental Assessment Committee because I was vehemently opposed to any destruction of that area.” From there, McGrath got involved with Ladies of the Lake Conservation Association – an initiative borne out of group of committed women concerned about
the Maskinonge River. That group, she noted, was a principal partner in the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan. She has also served on the board of Hospice Simcoe and currently serves as president of Innisfil Action Association and has been a Toastmaster for 18 years as well. “My skill set lends itself to volunteerism … and the drive comes from just caring about the community I live in. For many years, I was a commuter and wasn’t connected to the community in any way,” she said. And while she knew the neighbours living on either side of her, McGrath said she didn’t really know much about her community. “When I moved up here things were different. It was a way to get to know people in this community (and) learn what drives them and what matters to them.” For all of her hard work and dedication to her community, McGrath received the Individual Award as part of MP John Brassard’s Barrie-Innisfil 2018 Volunteer Awards.

W
hether it’s sponsoring local sports teams, allowing organizations to use the parking lot for charity events or donating product, Sobey’s Alcona Beach is known for being there for its community. In fact, community support is part of the grocery store’s DNA. “We do a lot to support local sports teams and clubs,” said owner Kevin Augustyn. “Pretty much anyone that walks through the door we try to help.” Help comes in many forms from the team at Sobey’s. “We allow a lot of organizations to use the property and, at the same time, we give them some breaks on products for charity barbeques or car washes … we do whatever we can.” The reasons for the company’s continued support of its community is two-fold. “I wouldn’t have a successful business if it weren’t for my customers in here so it is a way to thank them for supporting me by giving back to them. The other part is growing up I remember playing sports, and
sports are expensive. I remember being thankful for wearing that soccer shirt or baseball shirt with whatever organization had sponsored us. It’s because of that a lot of kids are able to play sports.” Having lived in Innisfil for more than three decades, Augustyn said the decision to extend a helpjng hand was a simple one. “You support the community you live in. I’ve lived here for over 30 years so it’s kind of natural for me to want to give back and support as much as I can. I support the people who’ve supported me all of these years.” Thanks to Augustyn’s leadership and support, Sobey’s Alcona Beach received the Business Award from MP John Brassard’s as part of his 2018 Volunteer Awards.

ongtime Innisfil resident Line Crickard was merely looking for a way to spend some of the extra time that came with retirement when she signed on with the Barrie Literacy Council nearly four years ago. Little did she know that she would get just as much out of the experience as the individuals she would sign on to help. Crickard is one of the approximately 90 active volunteers who provide one-on-one tutoring to adults looking to improve their basic reading, writing and math skills. “When I was working, a colleague was volunteering and I found it interesting … so when I retired, thought it would be a nice organization to get involved with,” she said, adding to date she has tutored three different students. The time spent with each individual varies depending on their needs and goals, she noted. “You get a lesson plan of their needs and then we decide what the priorities are and set goals
together that are reachable.” Like many of the volunteers at The Barrie Literacy Council, Crickard doesn’t have a background in teaching, but she does have a passion for helping others, and that’s what matters the most. “You get to see them grow. If they couldn’t read and you’re helping them learn to do that … then they can read a book to their child. It’s very rewarding in that way. You can see how excited and proud the students are. It’s just opening so many doors for them being able to be a little bit more literate.” The time she spends with her students has had a pretty big impact on her as well. “I am really enjoying it. I figured I would try it and see if it was fit. I am having fun and it’s very rewarding.”

lthough he may play down his role, Richard Ratte is well-known in his community for being a “go-to” guy when you need a great volunteer. A glance at his volunteer resume is all you need to see how much of a difference he is making in Innisfil. Ratte was instrumental in the local Rotary Club’s first Fun Run – which raised money for the Innisfil Rotary Trail, and more recently has become a volunteer with the Innisfil Project – a not-forprofit group shooting short films about the community. He could also be found staffing Christmas Kettles and has spent countless hours over the last two years volunteering with the Innisfil Christmas for Kids program where he did everything from toy pick up and drop off to sorting donated items. “I heard they needed help so I offered to help,” Ratte said. “Subsequent to that my wife and one of my close friends also started to participate. In
Innisfil, what amazes me the most is the strength of these little community churches and how much they do for the community. I admire them so basically I chose to volunteer with them.” Ratte said witnessing the scope of the work and the amount of material gathered through the campaign is inspiring, especially knowing the impact it will have on the community. “To see the space where they assemble and sort things out and how much work goes in to, it is so amazing. I like the idea that they’re doing something to help the community without the government getting involved. It’s just nice to see a community pull together.” Despite downplaying his role as a “go-to” guy in his community, Ratte recently received the 2018 Volunteer Award - Senior Award from MP BarrieInnisfil John Brassard.

ue Bennett doesn’t like to get bored. Adding up her time working with the South Simcoe Community Theatre, knitting hats and scarves for a local church, and her recent appointment to the Innisfil Library Board, Bennett spends upwards of 20 hours a week volunteering her community. “My husband and I purchased a restaurant in Innisfil and that took up all of his time and left me with free time, so I decided to fill it by becoming active in the community,” she said. Bennett first started volunteering with the theatre about five years ago after attending a performance of Dracula. “I belong to the Lakeshore Library Bookclub and we were reading Dracula in the book club. That happened to be the play that was on at the theatre, so we went to the theatre and I enjoyed it so much that I’ve had seasons tickets ever since and was prompted to volunteer almost immediately.” Not one to seek out the limelight, Bennett’s work
stays strictly behind the scenes assisting with set design, front of house or box office. “It’s just so personally rewarding. I feel so good when I do it. Volunteering like this is almost a selfish act because I feel like I get way more out of it than I put in.” On top of that, Bennett was appointed to the Innisfil Public Library Board earlier this year. “It’s a four-year posting. It’s quite a step up and very involved,” she said. “In just the two months that I’ve been on the board, I have learned so much I almost feel like I should be paying them for the honour.” With so much of her time spent volunteering in her community, it’s no wonder Bennet was awarded with a 2018 Individual Volunteer Award from MP Barrie-Innisfil John Brassard.

here is nothing more rewarding than knowing the work New Path Youth and Family Services does is helping young people in our communities. Trish’s words illustrate how important this work is. “New Path has essentially saved my daughter’s life,” she wrote. “I can’t be any more direct than that. By finally having the support of a therapist, who allowed her to talk about the traumatic events that have led her here, to the support of the staff when things get rough, to a program manager who has showed her time and time again that he will not discharge her from the program until she is truly ready to lead a healthy life at home, my daughter has been able to not only stabilize but to flourish.” New Path Youth and Family Services of Simcoe County is an accredited not-for-profit children’s mental health agency that provides a range of timely and responsive mental health services for children, youth and their families when and where they need them. We know mental health can’t wait. New Path offers a range of fully-funded child and youth mental health services to children, youth and their families from eight office locations in Simcoe County, as well as in many elementary and secondary schools. New Path is a team of dedicated and highly skilled staff providing mental health supports to children, youth and their families when and where they need them. Last year, more than 2,100 children, youth and their families received mental health support through our agency. In order to ensure timely and responsive services, we offer child and youth mental health walk-in clinics that offer immediate mental health support. This service can also be a first step to accessing additional mental health supports including groups for children and parents, short and longterm counselling and therapy, and a residential program. Although there is no office in Innisfil, the Walk-In Clinic is available at New Path offices in Alliston, Barrie and Bradford. Site Selection Committee members Janice Skot, RVH president & CEO; Chris Gariepy, community representative; and Ben Petersen, RVH vice president, Corporate Services & CFO visit potential sites for the future south campus.
Searching for the perfect spot for hospital site Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) is growing again. By Jessica Dolan Jessica Dolan is with RVH’s Corporate Communications department.
R
VH is halfway through a long-range planning exercise that will address how the organization will keep pace with increased health care demands and a projected population growth of 170,000 in Barrie, Springwater and Innisfil. “There are currently three planning phases underway as part of our long-range planning exercise,” explains Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO. “Site selection will help us determine the best location to build a future campus in south Simcoe County. At the same time, master programming will help us determine future and expanded service needs and master planning will determine space requirements, not just at the future site, but also at our current site.” A lot of work is being done to select a site for the proposed south campus in Innisfil or south
Barrie through a very clear, transparent process. To date, RVH has conducted more than 14,000 community engagement interactions to inform the process. Using clear criteria, the Site Selection Committee has narrowed its search from the original area to 47 potential sites and most recently down to nine potential sites in five zones. Expert consultants continue a very comprehensive analysis in order to develop a short-list of top-ranked sites that RVH’s Board of Directors will consider. Broad community consultation has also helped refine the search. RVH has received thoughtful insights from thousands of area residents who responded to surveys and participated in focus group discussions. Through the consultations, themes have emerged such as access to the future site particularly from Highway 400; multiple
road access points to the site; ability to service the site quickly; future planned public transportation and alignment with existing and planned development; as well as the impact on existing surrounding communities. “Choosing a site for RVH’s south campus is a once-in-a-lifetime decision that will impact health care in the region for generations to come,” says Skot. “That’s why we’re taking our time to ensure we choose the best location. We want to get this right.” Next steps will be to continue to assess the sites and narrow down the options to at least two highest-ranked locations. In the meantime, RVH will continue to talk to the community through surveys, presentations, social media and focus groups. Visit rvhplanourfuture.ca for more information and to stay up-to-date on RVH’s progress.
