jeweller

Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers In 1958, watchmaker Bill Le Boeuf was visiting jewellers to market his new invention, a machine to wind automatic watches. In Barrie, a jeweller at 52 Dunlop St. W. said he wanted to retire and asked Bill if he wanted to buy his business. “My Dad had nothing to lose so he bought the business for $18,000, an amount that would have bought three nice houses in Barrie,” says son Adam Le Boeuf, now owner of the 59-year old family business. “We’re really happy that our community has recognized us with this award. There is a unique vibe to our store. There has been a jeweller in this downtown building since the 1940s. The original jeweller brought his 1920s fixtures and antique clock from Cobalt, Ontario. We still have them. The clock runs everyday.” Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers, winner of Readers Choice Awards every year except one since 1999, stocks a wide range of beautiful jewellery including diamond and gemstone rings, pendants and earrings; and wedding and

engagement rings. However, the venerable shop is best known for its high quality estate watches and jewellery. You’ll find great examples from such brands as Tiffany, Cartier, Rolex, Omega and many more. They also have great experience in full custom creations. An on-site gemologist plus several designer/goldsmiths help customers redesign and remodel existing pieces and create gorgeous new ones. Pieces that are not reusable are recycled. “Recycling metals such as gold back into the jewellery business is good for the environment because then not as much metal needs to be mined,” explains Adam. “We also buy broken diamonds that are recut and recycled.” The company has always been about supplying their community with great jewellery at great prices while setting the bar for providing great value. On November 1, 2017, Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers begins its 60th year of family business in the same location in downtown Barrie. Adam says they have seen a lot of business come and

go during that time, but Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers is still there serving the public. Through six decades, generations of family members have come to Bill Le Boeuf Jeweller’s for their engagement rings, wedding rings and gifts. “We have people say their grandfather bought his engagement ring here, and so did their parents and uncle as well,” says Adam. “It’s great to hear those stories. Someone’s aunt or cousin will have recommended they come here. It’s a tradition in downtown Barrie. We’re fiercely proud of that tradition.” Adam also enjoys another aspect of running a jewellery business. People are usually coming in to shop for happy occasions. “We really have fun here. It’s not work, it’s a lifestyle for us. Most of our staff have extensive jewellery business experience and are dedicated”.

About Adam Le Boeuf As a teenager, Adam worked parttime at his family’s jewellery store, Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers at 52 Dunlop St. W. in downtown Barrie. He would follow his father Bill into the business full-time and later become the proud owner of the business. Adam now holds accreditation as a gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, California. With this training and his extensive experience, Adam can professionally assess the quality of a wide variety of gemstones from around the world. He is also able to source and secure high quality gemstones internationally to meet his customers’ jewellery needs. Adam’s ability to locate diamonds from all corners of the globe gives Bill Le Boeuf Jewellers the largest selection of diamonds in the Barrie area.

Serving Barrie for over 48 years, this local business is a true success story. Barrie Nissan 630 Veterans Dr., Barrie 705-726-0649 www.barrienissan.ca

Barrie Nissan For the fourth year in a row, Barrie Nissan has been recognized for outstanding customer service. Meghan Williams has been voted Readers Choice Favourite New & Used Car Salesperson. “We are currently ninth out of 196 Nissan dealers in Canada for customer satisfaction and I would say we are number one for employee satisfaction,” says General Manager Doug Ross. Fall is the busiest time at Barrie Nissan, with September historically the most active month. This September may have been a recordsetting month for the dealership. “In the last three years, our sales have been up over 100 per cent,” says Doug. “The Nissan brand is the fastest growing mainstream brand in Canada. About three or four years ago, Nissan decided to brand itself as the value leader in the market place, meaning they will either offer their vehicles for better value than

the competition, or will offer you a vehicle with the same equipment at a lower price.” Much of Barrie Nissan’s stellar level of customer satisfaction can be attributed to their salespeople’s approach to helping their customer choose the right vehicle. It starts with welcoming customers as they walk in and concludes with exceeding the customer’s expectations. “I don’t want customers to feel we sold them anything,” Doug says. “I want them to leave here thinking we helped them to make the right decision. We’re thankful that people give us the opportunity to earn their business. We believe in treating people the way we would like to be treated.” Nissan has introduced many new vehicle models recently and lowered the pricing from previous years. In the next 18 months, seven more models will make their debut. Right now, you can see some of next year’s models,

including the sleek and sporty 2018 Nissan 370Z and the seven-passenger 2018 Nissan Pathfinder SUV, at Barrie Nissan. The dealership’s award-winning service department features a fully equipped shop to handle your vehicle’s regular maintenance and mechanical repair work. Hours are scheduled conveniently for customers with shuttle service for extra flexibility. This level of customer service makes Barrie Nissan the best decision for buying or servicing your car, truck, cross over, mini van or SUV. “I truly believe we can assist anybody to make the right decision when they buy their vehicle,” says Doug. “Their second and third decision to come here is going to be because of our service department, how well we take care of people.” For more information about Barrie Nissan’s vehicles, please go to www.barrienissan.ca.

veterinarian – Trish O’Sullivan

O’Sullivan Animal Hospital Veterinarian Trish O’Sullivan’s goal is to give her companion animal patients the best possible care. This goal has resulted in a new ‘one stop’, 24-hour animal hospital that is also an accredited emergency facility. The 7,000 sq. ft. hospital, situated in the same plaza as its former location, is Barrie’s only 24hour veterinary facility. The hospital reflects Dr. O’Sullivan’s passion for staying current with the latest ways to meet patients’ needs while also taking the client’s budget into consideration. The clinic does not charge extra after hours or emergency fees. “For companion animals, we have dentistry, vaccines and wellness services as well as some unique services such as the fastest CAT scan machine of any vet clinic in Canada,” says Dr. O’Sullivan. “A board certified radiologist reads all our CAT scans. We also have endoscopes, ultra sound machines and an in-ground heated swimming pool with a ramp and underwater treadmill for hydrotherapy and rehabilitation.” Having such specialized equipment means an

8 | Readers Choice Barrie

2017

injured animal can have all services done at O’Sullivan Animal Hospital. “We can see a trauma patient, stabilize the animal and go into the operating room,” says Dr. O’Sullivan. “We offer some complimentary rehab with all of our orthopaedics.” O’Sullivan Animal Hospital also offers a unique 24-hour drive-through window service where items like pet food and prescriptions can be picked up and things such as samples can be dropped off. “You can pick up your pet’s medication at 4 a.m. without getting out of your car if you have just gotten off work,” says Dr. O’Sullivan. “Gone are the days when everyone worked from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The drive-through is always open like the rest of the clinic. We also have home made cookies and coffee available for our clients anytime.” Being a cat lover, Dr. O’Sullivan decided to make vet visits as easy as possible for felines. Cats have a separate entrance, reception area and exam rooms on the opposite side of the

facility from where dogs enter. The cat boarding area has windows, ledges, cat trees and bird feeders outside. As well, relaxing pheromones and calming music fills the air. “We just got iCalm Cat and iCalm Dog which are speakers with music statistically shown to make cats and dogs less stressed,” says Dr. O’Sullivan. “We play the music in the clinic, trauma centre and dog and cat boarding wards. It calms us too. We also have a glassed in ICU for cats in the trauma centre. All the floors are heated and it’s quiet. We can keep an eye on critical patients through the glass.” Dr. O’Sullivan feels her new animal hospital, recently renovated and re-opened in 2016, meets the needs of companion animals and their humans. “We feel that we have always practiced high quality medicine at an affordable price so that more people can get that kind of care for their pet,” says Dr. O’Sullivan. “This new facility looks professional and reflects our desire to strive for excellence.”

Top Ten Reasons Why Animals Love O’Sullivan Animal Hospital 1. O’Sullivan Animal Hospital is Barrie’s only 24 hour/7 day companion animal hospital. It’s always open! 2. It is dual accredited as an emergency facility and companion animal hospital. 3. Cats have their very own entrance, reception area and boarding space. 4. Dogs love hydrotherapy in the hospital’s heated in-ground pool and underwater treadmill. 5. Calming music and pheromone-scented air throughout the clinic soothes cats and dogs. 6. No emergency fees! Prices are the same 24 hrs. daily, including weekends and holidays. 7. Our parents can enjoy homemade cookies and coffee in the reception areas. 8. The hospital has the fastest CAT scan of any veterinary clinic in Canada. 9. Their drive-in window is open 24 hr. for convenient pick-ups and drop offs. 10. Easy to make appointments! Glowing with appreciation to win these awards and serve Barrie Owner Kimberly Crook says word of mouth has built Glow’s fabulous reputation.

“One woman comes in and tries our service, and soon after her friends start arriving,” says Kimberly with a smile. Glow Day Spa offers Phytomere facials, massage, waxing, manicures, pedicures and more. Spa services feature their Farmhouse Fresh body creams to relax and revitalize skin and nails. Glow’s trained aestheticians also do eyelash extensions that last three to six weeks with a fill. Eyelashes are attached to the client’s lashes on a one-to-one ratio or more than one for a fuller look. Extensions can be applied to look like mascara or extend beyond the natural lashes. Kimberly specializes in the safe application of permanent make-up for eyebrows, eyeliner and lip liner. Her interest in cosmetic tattooing

started with a concern for women needing help for thinning hair. “My heart has always gone out to women who have experienced hair loss, especially through cancer treatments,” says Kimberly. “The bulk of my work is for everyday women whose brows are thinning. They are tired of penciling them in so Permanent Makeup is a great solution. Brows and make-up services.” For permanent makeup services, Kimberly holds a complimentary consultation to show the machine, answer any questions and explain the process. When the client returns for the service, they decide on the shape first in pencil. “For eyebrows, I’ll reshape, measure and fill in the brow. We take before and after photos so the client can see the difference,” explains Kimberly. “The whole process takes about an hour. The treatment is topical and nothing enters the bloodstream. It’s very safe. Results lasting 4-7 yrs ”

Glow’s growing popularity in Barrie is based on Kimberly and her amazing team loving what they do. “Whenever I interview for Glow, I tell them they need to have a heart for serving,” says Kimberly. “The truth is you have to love taking care of people. Our mission that we strive for daily is to consistently offer the very best of our services, products and ourselves.” Glow’s success has lead Kimberly to expand her dream of what Glow Day Spa will look like in the future. “I love the city of Barrie and the people in it. When the time is right, I can’t wait to take Glow to the next level to serve our community better.” Glow Day Spa is open Monday to Friday 9amto 9pm and Saturday 8am to 3pm. Empowering you to create your life on your terms Clients at Anthem Mortgage Group come to the professional, Canadian-based company for residential, commercial, and investment mortgages. What clients also receive from Anthem Mortgage Group is a superb real estate education that allows them to thrive as investors.

“One of the secrets of our success is the ability to give clients financial insights,” says Bruce. “During a meeting, we’ve had clients experience a moment where they look at something in a way they haven’t before. That insight can change the direction of their financial future for the better.”

This life-enhancing education and excellent customer service has made Mortgage Agent Jon Doyle this year’s winner of the Readers Choice Award for Mortgage Broker/Consultant. Serving Barrie for over 17 years, this local business is a true success story.

Voldi’s Time Center Voted 9 years in a row For the ninth year in a row, Voldi’s Time Centre at the Kozlov Centre in Barrie is the city’s favourite place to bring watches and clocks for professional repairs. Owner Voldi Sucharzewski followed his father and grandfather into the craft of watchmaking. He opened his shop in 2000 to fill a local need for skilled watch repair, especially for high-end timepieces like Cartier and Piaget. “We combine hands-on skills with new technology,” says Voldi. “It gives us our edge. We can repair antique watches and clocks, and the most modern

time pieces.” Voldi’s Time Centre also provides services for waterproof watches. Every waterproof watch has seals and gaskets that eventually deteriorate, lose the capacity to resist water and need to be replaced. “After replacing those parts, we use equipment to pressurize the watch and test it to make sure it can withstand water pressure,” explains Voldi. “Many people don’t realize their waterproof watches need this kind of service as well as having battery replacement.”

LOCAL SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS IN BARRIE

hen it comes to buying local, sometimes it means is looking beyond the obvious alternatives. That’s what City of Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman does at least, something he admits however it’s always easy. “It can be a challenge in today’s world because ... there are just that many more shopping choices out there, but when we make the conscious decision to support a small local merchant, more of that money stays in the community,” he said, noting when it comes to everyday goods it’s definitely a challenge as everyone is trying to get the most for their dollar. “While it may not be possible to shop local for everything you need in your daily life

where there might be local alternatives that you may not have thought of and I think it’s important to go looking for that.” As for the broader Buy Local idea, Lehman acknowledged that while it can be a bit of a double-edged sword, the city is always keen to use local suppliers or expertise wherever possible. “Of course we want to do that and wherever the City of Barrie can use local suppliers it’s a great thing. It is a challenge however in that is if every local jurisdiction ... had a provision stating that if you’re not located in that city we can’t do business with you ... then you’d never be able to survive,” he said. “[So] how do you ensure businesses

can still go out and make money and create jobs and grow while still trying to support local companies without excluding them from doing business elsewhere.” The City of Barrie currently has a number of initiatives on the go to help both attract new business as well as grow existing business to the area, he noted, adding when he took on the role of Mayor and recently retired CAO Carla Ladd joined the City of Barrie about six years ago, they joined forces and created a group called Invest Barrie. The sole purpose of that group, he said, was to attract, retain and expand businesses in Barrie. It has been serving that role well, and while a large chunk of that work falls on those staff members, the mayor is also happy to lend a hand. “One of the things a mayor can do well is go out and sell the city as a lo-

cation to do business and as a location to invest in,” he said. “I (recently) had a call with a business owner who is having some challenges expanding around some approvals. I had lunch with a company from Detroit which is looking to do business in Barrie. We are trying to connect them with potential local suppliers to grow the amount of business that one of our local manufactures is doing.” Invest Barrie takes part in everything from trade shows and direct business recruitment to online marketing and business-to-business contact in its effort to create and retain business in Barrie - and in turn help bring more money to the city. Another important way the City of Barrie works to bring money in to the local economy is through tourism. The waterfront festivals alone bring in tens of millions of dollars in economic

activity, said Lehman. “We put all of that in the same department and basically created a super group.” The city, and Invest Barrie works diligently to ensure it can truly try to meet the needs of individual businesses to help them to be able to grow in the community. “We put a lot of focus on growing the business that we’ve got. It used to be municipalities spent a lot of time marketing themselves (and) trying to attract the next business that might be looking to locate in Ontario. We do that too ... but we know a lot more jobs come out of the companies that are already here growing.” Lehman truly believes in the idea of buying local wherever possible, especially when it comes to consumers purchasing decisions. “We all need to shop at big stores to get certain things in our life, but I think when it comes to our more discretionary purchases, and trying to choose local suppliers, it can have a significant impact on our local economy,” he said, One key example he pointed out is beer. “I have nothing against the big breweries, but there are craft breweries and a cidery here that make a great product. When people support companies like that they are helping to create jobs in their local economy and that’s a really great thing.”

It’s no wonder that the 40-year-old family business has won the Readers Choice Award for Favourite Fish & Chips for the fifth year in a row. “Our food is fresh without preservatives or added salt,” says Limoza Demiri, co-owner of the popular Barrie family restaurant. “We bring in whole Alaskan halibut and fillet it daily ourselves. We use only fresh locally grown potatoes and hand cut them. That’s what makes our food stand out.”

The crispy, light batter on Danny’s fish is made from a 40-year-old family recipe. Although halibut is a customer favourite, Limoza recommends you try their excellent haddock during your next visit. As well as fish and chips, Danny’s menu offers chicken fingers, scallops, shrimps and sides like salads, coleslaw and chips. Extra hungry? Zenetec provides damaged vehicles with auto body repair and auto glass replacement, and provides auto detailing for every vehicle. The company is one of the largest accident repair businesses in Ontario and has earned a Readers Choice Award most years since opening in 1992. Owner Martin Monteith thanks Zenetec’s many customers and repeat customers for making the company a success for a quarter of a century. As well, Martin thanks his fantastic staff of now over 50 employees, many of whom have been with Zenetec for more than a decade. The company is currently about to expand and is looking for experienced technicians. Zenetec will expand its skilled staff when the company opens its second location in the south end of Barrie at the end of 2017. Customers will enjoy the same high quality collision repair work at the new location. As well, customers will be able to clean their vehicles at the company’s new car wash.

“Award-winning collision work is what we are best known for and we will bring the same standard to the second location as well as the new car wash,” says William Monteith.

The fully trained technicians at the Autoglass Centre use only A+ glass and the highest quality materials to replace windshields or repair windshield chips.

Zenetec’s long running success is also based on superb customer service.

“Window tinting and clear 3M paint protection film are also are a big part of what we do here,” says William. “We are in the paint protection business as much as in the paint repair business. Prevention is always the most costeffective way to keep your vehicle looking like new. For a little over $300, we can protect from stone chips on your hood and fenders as opposed to $1500 to paint the front of a car.”

“We do whatever is necessary to make sure customers are taken care of properly,” says Diane Monteith. “When people come to us, it’s the result of what has been a stressful situation. We try to make things less painful for them and turn things around at the end of the day by making their collision repair a positive, easy and fast experience. Our goal is for our customers to be happy when the work on their vehicle is finished.” Zenetec’s Collision Centre is a 22,000 sq. ft. state of the art facility with the latest equipment and a skilled professional staff with more factory certifications than all the other repair centres combined in Barrie.

Zenetec customers regularly recommend the company’s collision repair services on social media and by word of mouth. “A lot of our customers are either referred to us by friends or come in as a result of reading our reviews online,” says Diane. “I also think our small town attitude towards customer service is something people appreciate and keeps them coming back.”

Physiotherapist, Christine Pratt, winner of the Readers Choice Award, is representative of the clinic’s highly skilled staff. “We only hire well qualified Physiotherapists and then help them reach the highest qualification you can get in Canada,” says Mandi, who herself has attained the top manual therapy certification in Canada and is certified in Gunn IMS. “Christine is a highly qualified and exceptional physio. While with us, she has reached the top level of manual therapy certification in Canada, making her a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapists, or FCAMPT certified. She now works as a mentor to other physios in our clinic who are working towards that goal.” The team at Resolution work with elite level athletes in a variety of sports. The walls of Resolution Physiotherapy are covered with photos of appreciative athletic clients

including track stars, swimmers, wrestlers, dancers, and hockey players. Clients range in age from babies needing help for torticollis (twisted neck) to active nonagenarians who want to work in the garden or ski and snowboard. All seven physiotherapists on staff have completed post-graduate manual physiotherapy training. Many have achieved the highest qualification for manual physiotherapy in Canada. “When I opened my clinic 8 years ago, my goal was to build a team of highly motivated and qualified physios like myself,” says Mandi. “It makes me happiest when I hear that people know of Resolution as a great clinic and have no idea who I am. I am confident that clients can see any of our highly-qualified Physiotherapists and receive excellent care.” Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), a unique treatment available at Resolution, treats neuropathic dysfunction that causes otherwise unresolvable muscle pain. A tight muscle can

11 Victoria Street Suite 218, Barrie 705-252-5200 resolutionclinic.com compress a nerve, cutting off its nutrition. The malnourished nerve becomes neuropathic and causes a low level of contraction in the muscle. A neuropathic nerve in the neck can tighten an entire arm. “No matter how much you massage or stretch it, once a nerve is neuropathic, the muscle it supplies can’t let go,” says Mandi. “IMS helps resolve underlying neuropathic dysfunction using an acupuncture needle that causes the muscle to cramp, after which the muscle relaxes completely. All of our Physiotherapists have post-graduate training in IMS.” Resolution Physiotherapy is always looking for ways to improve client care. As part of their concussion program, they recently added the Iron Neck device to strengthen necks. Research shows a stronger neck can help reduce the risk of concussion for athletes involved in impact sports. ‘Moksha Yoga Barrie’ is making headlines again “Our goal is to create an environment where people can come, feel safe and get whatever they need,” says Rosanna Marouelli, owner of multiple Readers Choice Award winner Moksha Yoga Barrie. “Some people with chronic pain or arthritis find this style of yoga very beneficial. Others want relaxation, flexibility or to burn a lot of calories for weight loss. People work at their own level, so a beginner can be in the same room as someone who has done it all their life and get the same benefits out of the yoga class.” MokshaYoga Barrie’s team of trained instructors hold a variety of classes seven days a week. The core of the studio is Moksha Yoga, a series of postures that are accessible to everybody and done in a heated space. The studio’s radiant heat panels on the ceiling mimics the sun’s warmth. The space is filled with fresh, purified air and the humidity is always maintained. Classes include the regular Moksha Yoga sequence and Moksha With Music, plus the faster paced Moksha Flow, Hot Flow, and Moksha Level 2. There is also a deep stretching, very relaxed Yin Yoga class.

Rosanna also recommends hot yoga for women in menopause as it helps to acclimatize the body. “Women in menopause often think hot yoga wouldn’t be for them, but it builds an efficient cooling system by teaching the body how to sweat and cool itself,” explains Rosanna. “Some women find they have fewer hot flashes the more they practice because of the numerous benefits of the yoga postures and how they help balance the body. The studio also regularly supports the wider community with a monthly donation. Every Friday, the $10 fee for the Karma Class, which is a regular 60-minute Moksha Yoga class, goes to a chosen local charity. “Over six years, we have donated almost $60,000,” says Rosanna. “It’s awesome to have a class where people can try it out, practice yoga, and give back to help the community.”

The goal of Moksha Yoga Barrie is to be accessible to everybody and every body. The studio’s instructors want to help all class participants to feel better. The studio also offers massage therapy with award-winning Registered Massage Therapist, a field Rosanna has worked in for over 17 years. Moksha’s participants range from teenagers to seniors. On Sunday afternoons, parents can drop off their 7 to 14-year-old kids for a yoga class or take the class together as a family. For people wanting to try yoga, Moksha Yoga Barrie offers an introductory $60 special that gives unlimited yoga classes for a month! Studio Manager Ali Egger says, “Rosanna truly has built such an incredible space, and this community is forever grateful for that. It’s a place where people can come to and find peace and healing. A place where we can all pause, and reset. It’s more than just a local business and a yoga studio. It’s a second home for most people, a second family.”

‘Fresh A Fare’ is making delicious headlines It’s not surprising that Fresh A Fare, Barrie’s favourite lunch place, serves up the city’s favourite sandwiches. This year’s Reader Choice Award is the fourth in a row for the fresh food eatery’s two locations. Co-owner Ester Sattler says the friendly restaurant is known for making everything in-house including soups, breads, sweets, condiments and salads. “We only have people on staff who love what they do,” says Sattler. “Our menu is designed with genuinely fresh food that is full of flavour. When

you combine fresh and flavourful, healthy goes with them hand in hand.” Now you can also enjoy wraps at Fresh A Fare. Choose any filling from the menu or try the Chicken Caesar, Greek Chicken or Turkey BLT wrap. Fresh A Fare is also renowned for its scrumptious carrot cake and bread. “We have records of thousands of kilometers travelled for our carrot cake,” Sattler says. “Our breads are phenomenally good tasting. People rave about any sandwich made on those breads.”

Local Business Gives Back to Our Community By Nikki Cole

The City of Barrie has a strong and committed business community willing to step up and lend a helping hand “We get wonderful support from the local business community (through their) support some of our events ... we have many, many businesses as sponsors that support our initiatives,” said Rotary Club of Barrie President Dave McCullough. “It’s extremely important to get involved because it shows their commitment to giving back to their community (and) they use Rotary as a vehicle to do that. While they may not be in all cases giving directly to a cause, but when they see they’re supporting Rotary through a sponsorship or a donation ... they know those funds are

being put right back in to their community.” “Businesses realize when they step up and give to Rotary they can help improve the standards for a large number of people,” he said.”It’s good for everybody (and) there is a strong need. Look at RVH - if we doesn’t step up we don’t have the best health care we can have. If we don’t step up and help hospice we don’t have that facility that is so important to people when they’re coming to the end of the life and the comfort it provides to families. If we don’t step up in the community grieving children don't get the help they need. For the community to step up and help support this places, it creates a strong community for the people who live here

"We get wonderful support from the local business community (through their) support some of our events ... we have many, many businesses as sponsors that support our initiatives"

and enjoy what we have here in Barrie.” President, Barrie Huronia Rotary Club Joe Beleskey is the president of Rival Office Solutions and is also serving as president for Barrie Huronia Rotary for 2017/2018. Beleskey also believes strongly that local business owners can play an important role in and help drive change in the community and with local organizations. “As a local business owner I truly believe it’s our responsibility that we get involved and that we make where we work a better place to live. Whether it’s through Rotary or any other way ... if local busi-

nesses don’t support local charities it’s hard to get the people of the community to support them as well.” One way his club does that is through a variety of fundraising initiatives, including the recent — and successful - Barrie Fall Fishing Festival, funds from which will help support various environmental projects including building a new dock on Kempenfelt Bay. The club is also gearing up for this year’s Christmas Hamper program which will provide gifts as well as all the ingredients required for a full Christmas dinner for those who would otherwise have to go without.

}

Another large fundraising initiative includes the annual Hearts and Minds Gala in support of Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre which is coming up in February. “I truly believe as president of Rival Office Solutions that it’s our obligation as local businesses that we do get involved and help support our community organizations to make the community that we live and work in a better place,” he said. “I am very proud to be from Barrie and working in Barrie and it’s important we give back to it as well.” Not all involvement has to be financial

added Valerie Scott, a former business owner and member of the Barrie-Huronia Rotary Club. “A lot of time they have facilities they can loan out to various changes. Sometimes they have they resources to help financially (but) they can also help out by contributing opinions on how things can run better,” she said. “It’s important because businesses have an opportunity that others don’t that they can offer to the public.” For example, she continued, the majority

of Rotary members are business owners, which provides them with a certain level of flexibility to do some charity work. It also provides them with the financial means to help people in their community that are less fortunate. “It allows you to join various committees and organizations and so many of them have amazing, worthy causes that allow you to reach out and help people,” she said. “Everybody has something to offer. You don’t always have to tackle a big project if you’re limited on time, but businesses do have resources that they can use to help people in the community. Depending on what those resources are and how much time you have to dedicate to it, everybody can do a little bit. That will help create change. If everybody did a little bit then that adds up to being a lot ... and it can be very impactful.” Business owners in Barrie routinely give back to the community and local organizations, said Patricia Dent, president of the Barrie Chamber of Commerce. “We have a fantastic community and some very large entrepreneurial centres. Many business owners ... have a social responsibility program, so you’ll often see

them have a charity that they support,” she said. “I was just talking to a fitness business and they’re planning to give back to the food bank. Individual businesses do that an awful lot. This is one of the most giving communities I have ever been involved in.” The Chamber of Commerce has several of its own initiatives that strive to create positive change in Barrie, she pointed out, pointing to its partnership with Family Medicine Teaching Unit at RVH to combat the severe shortage of family physicians in the region. “We want the doctors in training here to stay in the community. If they can stay in the community then the population is going to be better served.” A new project — and one of the Chamber of Commerce’s bigger initiatives — is called Project Lifesaver, which is working to make bracelets with GPS capabilities available for vulnerable citizens. The bracelet contains a tracking device that emit a unique FM radio frequency signal every second and satellite receivers that pick up the sound. “If there is a danger that some of these folks could wander off and become lost this will help,” she said, adding the project was sparked by the disappearance of Barrie resident Mandy Thompson last February. “You don’t want your vulnerable citizens to suffer. That will allow people to sleep more easily.” The organizations Business After 5 events also pairs local charities or not-for-profit with a business in order for them to gain some exposure by having access to business owners as well as have their own profiles raised among the business community. “There is an affinity between business and not-forprofits and charities, and we are constantly mindful that our community is only as good as the support it gets.”

DOWNTOWN BARRIE By Nikki Cole

Downtown is the heart and soul of any city — and Barrie is no different. “If you want to have the pulse of what the local flavour is you come downtown. All of the opportunities and all challenges that a downtown presents are the same no matter where you go. It’s a dynamic area of a city,” said Craig Stevens, managing director, Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA), adding it is also where a variety of socioeconomic, ethnic, commercial and residential components can come together and bounce back and forth off of each other. “That’s what makes it really dynamic, exciting and what makes it local to who we are.”

Ensuring the main street is vibrant and has support and prosperity is extremely important, he added, pointing out it also serves as an important destination point to visitors. “If you think about when you travel, if you’re not going to a specific attraction, you typically go to downtown areas abroad. I think it sometimes takes us as our own locals to do that travelling to realize that people will be coming here and how important having that home base is in our city.” In order to ensure that Barrie’s downtown lives up to that, the Barrie BIA has been working on a number of projects over the last few years, the highlight of which will be the grand opening of Meridian Place and the new Memorial Square in June 2018. That project, said Stevens, is taking a piece of property he described as a bit of a “mishmash of a couple of things” — including a war memorial with the cenotaph, a grassy area, a half-moon street, a some parking spots along with a disconnect from the waterfront in to the downtown — and creating a new space that will enhance the memorial and the cenotaph by relocating them to a more prominent location as well as turning the entire space in to a public plaza. That plaza, he explained, will contain features such as a permanent stage that can accommodate up to a 30-piece band or theatre production. “You can perform north (and) that can accommodate up to a 3,000 person crown or more of an intimate setting. The exciting opportunity is that you can actually perform south out in to the bay and (by) closing Simcoe Street, your audience can connect in to Heritage Park (with) 10,000 to 15,000 as a potential audience.” The new space will also include a curated public art display on an ongoing basis and within Memorial Square there will be a new monument incorporating soil recently patriated to Canada from Vimy Ridge. 2017

“Our plan kicking off in 2018 is to eventually have a million visits through the space through a professionally programmed annual calendar.” Along with the new public spaces, Barrie’s downtown is also welcoming a number of new businesses to Dunlop Street West, including Osgoode Company - selling locally sourced casual wear. That company, said Stevens has done a good job with their space, taking something he described as “pretty derelict inside” and turning it in to a space that looks like it’s been plucked right out of Queen Street West in Toronto. “They’re really excited and motivated and it’s a really great opening for Dunlop Street West.” Friday, October 6 saw the opening of a new kitchen and cabinetry company called Drors, which has thought outside the box and will be giving their showroom double duty and using it as an event space. “What we are finding is the businesses opening up now aren’t just putting on a coat of paint, putting a sign up and opening their door and waiting for people to come in. They are really being proactive and looking at all the different opportunities within their products ... whether is’s really supporting local or taking traditional elements of their store and reformatting them for different uses. It’s proactive in bringing people in. The shopping experience, and the retail experience for sure, is having to change that way.”

“There are a lot of great investments lining up, whether it’s our public farmers market potential build where the old train station is or the streetscape project that would see Dunlop Street’s surface completely change to more of a pedestrian focused venue. We are connecting the East and west and connecting Meridian Square with the potential Farmers Market.”

}

Sophia Street Apothecary also opened up shop on Dunlop Street West recently, and is another example of a business owner taking a different approach to the typical retail experience. “While she is offering a retail aspect, she really taking a different approach and looking to make partnerships beyond just her product in the store .” While Stevens acknowledges the importance of new blood in downtown Barrie, he said the stores that have been the mainstays are extremely important to the success of the area. “They’re the anchors of the downtown. They’ve done whatever they do really well and as a result have a loyal following,” he said adding if any one is looking to the downtown, if it’s feasible, there’s a connection to owning the building and having a long-standing business. “What’s been great is that the succession of those businesses ... they’ve taken the same approach but have also taken the initiative to update and refresh on an ongoing basis. They’re moving along with the times. Even the businesses that have opened up in the last couple of years ... are really taking a full 360-perspective of business and how to take every opportunity available to them.” As for the future of Barrie’s downtown core, Stevens foresees continued growth and focus on the area. Stevens also sees an increase in residential areas in the downtown as well as a natural expansion around the lakeshore. “I think it was Malcolm Gladwell that said. “If you look at most overnight success, they’re 10 years in the making”. There have been a lot of people working behind the scenes over the last decade or more. We have had more presented in terms of ideas and opportunities than we ever had ... and the momentum we have is a huge opportunity for us right now.”

financial planner & insurance agent

Serving Barrie for over 15 years, this local business is a true success story. “Loving what I do makes it easy.”

Melanie Adams, Sun Life 258 Bayfield Street, Barrie 705-252-9010 sunlife.ca/melanie.adams

Melanie Adams of Sun Life Financial Voted Favourite Financial Planner & Insurance Agent In view of current issues around the housing market, household debt and the global impact of international events, having the support and informed advice of a financial planner makes sense now more than ever. Melanie Adams of Sun Life Financial has helped Barrie residents plan and reach their financial goals for 15 years. Her insurance and investment expertise, caring nature and ability to find solutions to difficult financial situations have helped Melanie win a Readers Choice Award for the eighth year in a row. Though thinking about your finances can often feel overwhelming, Melanie’s clients benefit from her ability to transform what is often complex into simple, digestible parts. “We find solutions that are easy, accessible and unique for each client. Taking some of the intimidation factor away gives me tremendous satisfaction. It’s all about clarity and getting you to your goals.” Melanie believes clear communication is the

50 | Readers Choice Barrie

2017

key to her clients making informed choices. She also insists on annual check-ups, much like your family physician would recommend. “Continuity is so important. Through regular reviews, my staff and I can keep up with the changing needs of our clients. From having kids to selling the family business, there is never a dull moment, and these moments require planning.” All client relationships start with a detailed financial plan to clearly articulate goals and look around corners at unexpected risks. When preparing the financial plan, Melanie considers what measures would be needed if the family ran into unexpected challenges. “We make sure you look at your financial plans from a holistic point of view, which means we trouble shoot for the unforeseen. What if a serious illness turned the household upside down, or even sudden unemployment? With the right safety net in place, our clients feel more confident in their ability to achieve their goals,” says Melanie.

Retirement is another core focus Melanie both enjoys and excels at. “We have a strong emphasis on retirement planning in this office. With fewer people having company pension plans and concerns about government benefits, clients rely on us to help them meet their retirement goals and not outlive their assets.” If you regularly use mainstream banks but are not getting the service or advice you need, Melanie advises you to explore other institutions. Many have similar products and services as the banks, but go well beyond. With only 30 percent of Canadians having a financial plan, she encourages people to look for a financial planner they trust and can see themselves working with for years to come. “We hope to have a life long relationship with our clients as they reach their milestone goals,” says Melanie. Congratulations, Melanie, on your 8th year as Barrie’s Favourite Financial Planner!

When customers come in, they know they are going to see smiling faces and always get what they need at a competitive price.

Zehrs 11 Bryne Dr 620 Yonge St 607 Cundles Rd E www.zehrs.ca

Zehrs It’s not surprising that customers regard Zehrs as Barrie’s ‘community corner store’. After 22 years of enjoying the store’s welcoming atmosphere, friendly service and top quality products, customers continue to vote for Zehrs as their Favourite Grocery Store. Store Manager Cristian Grove thanks all Zehrs customers for their ongoing support. “We see the same faces every week and know many of our customers by name,” says Cristian. “We thank them for their loyalty to the business. For us, it’s all about the relationships we have with our customers. We are not another big box retailer. When customers come in, they know they are going to see smiling faces and always get what they need at a competitive price.” Zehrs’ staff regularly gives back to their community through activities like shoreline clean ups and donations to the OSPCA. In September, the store donated almost $5,000

of school supplies to the Barrie Food Bank during the Back to School drive. “We donate all of the store’s product with dented cans & broken boxes to the Barrie Food Bank every day,” says Cristian. Over the past year, Zehrs has adapted to the online shopping trend with its Click and Collect website at www.zehrs.ca. The service is ideal for commuters who want to pre-order and pick up their groceries on the way home or anyone whose busy day doesn’t allow time for in-store shopping. Customers quickly and easily order their groceries on computer by selecting individual grocery items or browsing through product aisle, family member or brand categories. The Click and Collect service is a valued time saver according to feedback from Zehrs customers. “You order your groceries online and select a designated time slot for when you want to pick them up,” explains Chris. “At the store,

you call a phone number and say you’re picking up. Staff will run right out to your car with the order in any weather. There is a $3-$5 fee depending on the time of day. Our staff is trained to pick the best meat, produce, bakery and grocery items to fill online orders. Also, online customers reap the same benefits from flyer sale prices and coupons as in-store shoppers.” Though Zehrs cannot compete with some competitors’ budget pricing, customers come in for the superior level of attentive customer service and consistent selection of products. “When you come into our store, you’re going to find fresh products and be welcomed with a smile,” says Cristian. “That’s how we set ourselves apart. If customers find a product they want at a competitor’s store and we do not stock it, I will try my hardest to get it onto our store’s shelves.”
