He planned a weekend getaway with their closest friends and family then waited until sunset. The lake was calm and it was time to set the stage. Jesse asked if Carleigh wanted to go on a canoe ride (with his best friend Aaron in tow as the covert photographer). This is where plans went a bit awry. None the wiser, Carleigh jumped into the center of the canoe with her pajamas on and no shoes. Jesse and Aaron paddled the canoe across the bay where the cliff stood, and suggested climbing to the top to see the inuksuk she’d built with her father fifteen years earlier. Carleigh looked at them like they were both nuts “I’m not climbing up there, I don’t have any shoes on!” After five minutes of trying to convince her to climb barefoot, the boys gave up. They began slowly paddling back, singing folk songs along the way. Finally Jesse decided he didn’t want to wait any longer, and asked Aaron to take a selfie of the three of them in the canoe. With Aaron in front, Carleigh in the center, and Jesse in the back down on one knee, the perfectly imperfect imper engagement selfie was captured. Jesse tapped Carleigh on the shoulder and she tur turned ever so slightly to see the glint of the ring in his hand. She screamed, he asked her to marry him, and she of course said YES! They were met on the dock by all of their family and friends and a celebratory champagne toast. Despite not going as planned it will always be one of the best nights of their lives. Jesse and Carleigh are set to exchange vows at her parent’ hobby farm in Innisfil on August 8th, 2020, and parent’s are planning a sustainable wedding.

W
hen Bruce Wayne, an adorable 2-year-old bullmastiff, walked down the aisle beside the Master of Ceremonies with his parents’ wedding rings tied to his snazzy white bow tie collar, he totally stole the wedding. “Every single person said ‘Hey Bruce’ and stopped him to say hello because everyone knows him,” says Blair Randolph, who with husband Matt Archibald chose their fur baby as ring bearer for their fall wedding on October 14, 2017. “He was a little ham and everybody was loving it.” The couple and Bruce Wayne were living in their current home in Tiny Township, close to the township beach on Georgian Bay, when Matt decided it was time to propose. He knew Blair wouldn’t want to draw attention by getting engaged in public, so he conspired with Bruce Wayne to pop the question while on one of their usual walks on the beach. One Saturday, he asked Blair to go for a walk with him and their doggo on the beach. Blair turned them down. “The next day he was adamant that he wanted to go down to the water despite it being April and not that warm,” recalls Blair. “I still didn’t want to go, but went anyhow. Along the way, he said he really loved me and Bruce Wayne, and couldn’t imagine life without us. When we got to the beach, he proposed.” The couple chose the Brooklea Golf and Country Club in Midland for their ceremony and reception venue and put together a list of 165 guests. Because Blair had always wanted a fall wedding, they decided on October 14, 2017. Friends Brett, Lee, Marcy, Ashley, Amanda and Kristy were asked to be the bride and groom’s wedding party. And, of course, Bruce Wayne was asked to be ring bearer. He apparently said yes. On the wedding day, the weather eventually cooperated for the couple’s outdoor ceremony. Guests were driven to the ceremony site by the first hole in golf carts.

“The morning of the wedding it was raining, but by the afternoon the sun had come out,” says Blair. “My dress was sleeveless, but I was totally warm. The year before, October 14 had been freezing, so we were so lucky. Everything was beautiful.” During the ceremony, Bruce Wayne kept the mood playful by simply being himself. It may have been boredom that caused him to start pulling at the leash held by the groom. The photographer caught a picture of the bride laughing as Matt tried to say his vows with Bruce pulling on the leash and rolling around as if he knew the emotional moment could use some levity. “Everyone was dying laughing,” says Blair, laughing herself. “A friend came up and took Bruce to the back. Bruce played tug of war with him back there. Bruce sat with us when we were signing the papers. He was so cute.” When Blair and Matt said “I Do” and sealed it with a kiss, guests headed for a cocktail hour while the wedding party stayed outside for photos. Luckily, the rain held off until after the party was back inside to join everyone for a post ceremony drink and mingle. A photo booth was a popular spot for people to create memories of the day. After a casual dinner, the bride’s parents, groom’s parents, Maid of Honour and the Master of Ceremonies all gave heart-warming speeches. When the music started, the dance floor was packed and stayed that way all night. The DJ was happy to play everyone’s requests. Blair and Matt made sure that those who didn’t dance, or needed a breather, had other places to go. “The photo booth was set up all evening,” says Matt. “We had tons of people on the dance floor but people could visit the photo booth and there were nice places to sit. It was like there were a lot of little parties going on throughout the whole venue. It was great.” One of Blair’s fondest memories from her wedding day is dancing with her Nana. “She was my mom’s mom,” says Blair. “I got to dance with her. She’s gone now, but I have that memory.” The bride also took away a cherished memory of her husband from the wedding ceremony. “Matt wrote his own vows and memorized them,” says Blair. “He surprised everyone, including his own mother. He said the most beautiful things. He rarely opens up in front of people, only with me. But when he said his vows, it was like everyone got to see him like I see him. the time to memorize his vows. The next day, when we were on the way to the airport for our honeymoon in Costa Rica, he said them over to me. He memorized them by saying the vows out loud everyday while going back and forth to work.”

I
n December 2014, Carolyn Offner and her sister Lindsay Moore went to Huntsville’s popular Pub on the Docks. Neither was aware that live music was on tap that evening. Local musician Tobin Spring was performing. Lindsay was requesting songs when a friend, who was also a friend of Tobin’s, sat down at their table. When Tobin took a break, the musician came over to talk with their mutual friend. Later, he started talking with Carolyn and their relationship began. After texting and talking for a month, the couple went out together. That first date eventually led to their wedding day on July 27, 2019. The bride had long dreamed of a summer outdoor wedding in Muskoka, and that dream came true. About 150 family and friends gathered for the occasion at the home of the groom’s parents, Bill and Jeanine Spring. The couple loved the home’s extensive gardens and knew it was a natural event location. The Springs host the Etwell Blues Concert Series there every summer. The addition of a beautiful homemade rustic arbour and handcrafted benches for guests to sit on during the ceremony helped to create the perfect Muskoka cathedral setting on the front lawn. For her bridal party, Carolyn chose three friends as bridesmaids and sister Lindsay as Matron of Honour. His Best Man and three groomsmen stood with Tobin at the wedding ceremony. The bridesmaids came down the aisle to original song “Love and Falling Snow” by local artist, and groom’s sister, Sarah Spring. The song was performed by Sarah on keyboard and by the groom’s aunt Mary Beth Doherty on violin. Wearing a stunning sweetheart fit & flare gown with lace bodice, Carolyn walked down the aisle to “A Thousand Years” performed by Sarah on keyboard, Mary Beth on violin and Jenny Smith on vocals.

When a sudden downpour of rain fell during the ceremony, the wedding party and guests were undeterred. “It was frustrating for us and we wondered if we should move the ceremony into the reception tent,” says Carolyn. “But I still wanted to get married outside, so the crowd rallied. My friend Jennifer Kyle, who was my Day Of Coordinator, ran around finding and distributing umbrellas. We carried on under the umbrellas and it was magical. When I saw the pictures, everyone looked so happy.” The bride and groom chose to exchange traditional vows with their officiant, the late Rev. Derek Shelly. “Derek Shelly was incredible, and sadly, has since passed away,” says Carolyn. Because of the rain, Carolyn and Tobin couldn’t use microphones so their vows became more intimate. “Our vows were really just between Tobin and I,” says Carolyn. “It was a special, ‘just-forus’ moment.” After the bride and groom had their first kiss as husband and wife, the sun came out and guests enjoyed a cocktail hour on the lawn. Strings of lights illuminated the area and everyone was ready to have a good time. In the reception tent, wedding décor included round tables with white linens and wooden slab centrepieces holding mason jars painted in the wedding colours and full of roses and baby’s breath. Guests signed a unique “guest book” - one of Tobin’s acoustic guitars. The unique guitar is now displayed proudly on the wall at the couple’s home. The head table was festooned with greenery and shades of purple that echoed of the colours of the bridesmaids’ dresses. Guests found their seats via a seating chart made of vinyl records mounted on boards, a nod to the wedding’s musical theme. The wedding meal was a sumptuous buffet catered by The Family Place Restaurant & Pizza in Huntsville. Guests chose between salmon, prime rib and chicken entrees. A small wedding cake and cupcakes made by The Whimsical Bakery in Huntsville and a tower of Krispy Kreme donuts ended the meal on a sweet note. The Family Place also provided late night pizza for snacking. A local blues band, comprised of musicians who Tobin often works with, got people up on the dance floor. Later DJ music would wind down the festivities with tunes for late night dancers. Near the end of the night, Tobin got up and played with the band. But it was important to him to step back for the evening

and focus on his new bride and their guests. “The reception itself was just beautiful,” recalls Carolyn. “We made our rounds after the speeches. One comment people made was that the speeches were the best they had ever heard. They were all incredible. My mom and my cousin created a slide show of Tobin and I from childhood until today and ran it at the beginning of the reception.” Guests went home with small bottles of pure maple syrup made on-site by Tobin’s parents, and personalized guitar picks. The newlyweds treated themselves to a threeday mini-moon at the charming Sherwood Inn at Port Carling. A honeymoon to Cabo, Mexico was saved until October.

T
hough wakeboarding is not a leisure time activity of either Desiree Poirier or Dallas Coulter, it was the wakeboarding festival Wakestock that brought them together. That first meeting in Collingwood in 2012 launched a love story that led to their wedding at Belcroft Estate in Gilford on September 14, 2019. “My friend asked me to come to Wakestock
for a night away,” recalls Desiree. “Dallas’ best friend was wakeboarding, so they came together. We met at a house party that evening and the rest is history.” That history includes a proposal that happened after a day of wine tasting and running some fast cars around a track at Niagara-on-theLake. When the couple was back at their hotel,

Dallas dropped to one knee and asked the question. Desiree said yes. “It was quite lovely,” says Desiree. “I’m very much a person who likes to be organized and know what’s going on, but he caught me completely off guard.” When they were considering wedding venues, Dallas’ love of the outdoors had them looking at places that offered outdoor wedding ceremonies. They also wanted a venue close to Innisfil they were building their home. When they saw the Belfield Estates with its forests and stunning property, they knew this was where they would marry. Their wedding date was chosen to allow the cottagers among their 189 guests to enjoy dock time during the last weekends of summer. Being from Parry Sound, Dallas knew that was important. Desiree asked her sister Dani Poirier to be her Maid of Honour and Dallas tagged brother Parker Coulter as his Best Man. The ceremony was performed in a serene spot beside the Marquee Tent where the reception was held. But prior to the festivities, Dallas and Desiree had a most unusual First Look. “I knew we’d need something to lighten the mood so I asked our friend Brendan how he would feel about putting on a wedding dress and tapping Dallas on the shoulder,” says Desiree. “Dallas would turn around and see him instead of me. Brendan did and it was definitely one of the highlights of the day. I was hiding behind a tree and the wedding planner gave me the nod to tap Dallas’ shoulder afterwards. He still shed some tears. Look might take away some emotion from the ceremony, it was not the case. The ring bearer was the couple’s French Bulldog Louis, looking sharp in a bowtie. The doggo sat beside the bride’s father to help him with the emotions of the moment. The bride came down the aisle to meet her love to “I Get To Love You” by Ruelle. Desiree and Dallas wrote their own vows in custommade vow books decorated in their wedding colours. After being declared husband and wife and sealing it with a kiss, the newlyweds headed to a celebratory cocktail hour with their guests. At the reception, the elegant Marquee Tent was laid out to allow guests to further enjoy the gorgeous property. The French style service dinner included garden salad, steak or stuffed chicken, potato and vegetable medley with a vanilla-filled crepe drizzled with chocolate for dessert. Later in the evening, sliders, grilled cheese sandwiches and poutine were available for snacking. For the newlyweds, one of the highlights of the reception was DJ Gary G from Hype Nite. After the arrival of the wedding party and introduction of Mr. and Mrs. Coulter, Gary G got everyone up on the dance floor with a hot mix of dance music.

“Everyone was fist bumping, jumping and dancing including my 92-year-old grandfather,” said Desiree, with a smile. “It was such a great way bring everyone together. They all had an instant connection by the time they sat down. The energy was up and it set a light-hearted, fun tone.” In the midst of the party, the couple took a friend’s advice to find a few minutes during the reception to relax and be alone. “At 10 p.m., we went down by the pond and got to see each other,” recalls Desiree. “That was lovely. We were both so busy and things go by so fast. We took a moment to really cherish each other.” Having had a two-year engagement, Desiree and Dallas recommend having a longer time to look at options, book vendors and take a breath between decisions when planning a wedding. Desiree also recommends using a wedding planner or Day Of Co-ordinator. “With someone there who is reliable, taking care of things and can solve problems, you have the freedom to enjoy the day,” says Desiree. “If you can find a bit of flexibility financially, it is 100 percent worthwhile.”

I
n June 2016, dancer Emma Burkholder and comedy host Matt Steer were both working aboard the Disney Magic Cruise Ship. They met and romance sparked up during the rest of the contract. After Matt left the company to perform in a show back home in England, he and Emma continued to date long-distance while she worked another year aboard the ship. When Matt later returned to work aboard the same ship, Emma had left for a job with Disney in Shanghai, China. The couple have worked on separate ships since then. However, their ships do pass each other every Friday night around 11:30 p.m. “It’s currently our ‘date-night’ until we are back together,” says Emma. In the summer 2018, they decided it was time to plan a wedding despite their peripatetic careers. Emma had always thought she would marry sometime, but Matt didn’t. At least, he didn’t until he met Emma. “All of a sudden, I started thinking that way,” he says, smiling. “I do feel differently since we’ve been married. We have an elevated bond, a higher connection than before, and it feels good.” Matt travelled to Shanghai to meet Emma, who is from Gravenhurst, to plan their wedding details. With 86 guests coming from Canada, England, the U.S. and New Zealand, invitations were sent online with plenty of time for guests to make travel plans. “We were engaged for almost two years,” says Matt. “Because we knew we were going to be on different sides of the world during our engagement, we needed time to plan it. I was able to get special vacation time, one month off from my contract, to get married.” The couple chose August 24, 2019 to allow for an outdoor summer wedding with the beauty of Muskoka all around them. The date allowed the teachers in Matt’s family to attend before the start of

school. They planned an extended weekend of celebrations, from Thursday to Monday, to give long distance travellers time to enjoy Muskoka’s gorgeous scenery and have time to relax, mingle and get to know each other. “It ended up being a once-in-a-lifetime week long celebration because most of those people will never be together in the same room again,” says Matt. “The more we look back on it, the more special it is to us.” The Bayview Wildwood Resort in Port Stanton, the venue Emma and Matt chose for their weekend nuptials, is a place that holds a special fondness in their hearts. “When we began dating, Matt came over to Canada for the first time from his home in England,” recalls Emma. “It was wintertime. We spent a few days at Bayview Wildwood, enjoying all that a Canadian winter has to offer.” After settling on a venue for the ceremony

and reception, the couple selected their wedding party. The bride chose Holly Maher and Lenie Reid as Maids of Honour. Her bridesmaids were sisters Hannah and Veronica Burkholder, groom’s sister Abbie Steer, Kaila Reynolds, Julia Bazso and Kelsey Hagan. The groom asked brother Dom Steer to be his Best Man. Groomsmen and groomswomen included Richard Absalom, Michelle Airey, Grace Maynard, Alex Hancock and David Haydn. The couple’s wedding day was gorgeous, a sunny day with a breeze off the lake. Though Emma had wanted to get married in the woods, summer bugs necessitated a switch to a ceremony at the Resort’s beautiful waterfront. Pianist Amanda Stanton provided music for the ceremony. The bridesmaids entered to “Somewhere in my Memory” in honour of Matt’s late father Ian. The bride walked down the aisle music from Beauty and the Beast to add a touch of Disney to the day. Amanda also played during the reception dinner as guests enjoyed Phyllo Baked Brie and Oven Roast Supreme of Chicken or Butternut Squash Ravioli. The meal ended sweetly with white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. The sweets kept coming at a late night snack table including the newlyweds’ favourite Canadian
treats: Timbits and butter tarts. Pulled pork sliders, poutine, pizza and chicken fingers were also on the late night menu. Looking back, Emma and Matt are happy they were able to have so much time with their family and friends. “You hear about how quickly a wedding goes by, but we had the whole weekend to socialize,” says Matt. “We joined together so many people that day, not just the two of us. We joined family and friends together. Whereas some couples have been together for years and their families and friends know each other, our families hadn’t met and my friends hadn’t met Emma’s friends. So many different worlds came together. It was a marriage of our two backgrounds and our childhoods.” The newlyweds had a short but sweet honeymoon at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort on Walt Disney World before Matt had to return to work on the Disney Fantasy Cruise Ship. He foresees a time when he and Emma will spend their married life together. “We’ve had an international relationship so far, but I hope it will become a land-based relationship in the foreseeable future,” says Matt. “I’m hoping to get a visa to be able to live and work in Canada.”

D
uring Ontario’s golf season, Emily Hopkins, Jared Holbrow and their families can most often be found on Muskoka’s excellent golf courses. One in particular, the South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club in Bracebridge, has been the links of choice for the bride’s family for many years. As members of the Club, Emily often golfs with her Mom and her Dad
plays every Sunday. When Emily and Jared became engaged, they knew the South Muskoka Club was where they wanted to marry and celebrate with friends and family. “We were there a lot as kids, so the Club was one of the first venues we went to check out,” says Emily.

The couple were university students when they met at a St. Patrick’s Day party in 2012. The relationship sparked, thrived and turned to love. Jared proposed and Emily accepted in September 2017. They chose a wedding date of September 15, 2018 for a fall wedding that combined the beauty of Autumn with the warmth of late summer. Their outdoor ceremony was held at 6:30 p.m. between the Club’s 1st tee and the 18th green. A roaming two-piece band of upright bass and guitar provided music for the ceremony. Maid of Honour Cait Hopkins, the bride’s sister, and Best Man Basil Lambiris stood with the couple as they exchanged vows before 130 close family and friends. For their reception at South Muskoka’s Clubhouse, the bride and groom wanted their guests to be able to mingle, dance and enjoy themselves. “We just wanted a big party,” says Emily. “At first, we thought about eloping and having a party when we came back. But we talked to our mothers, who were both very involved, and they had some fabulous ideas that swayed our decision.” Instead of a formal sit-down dinner, servers circulated among the guests all evening with assorted hors d’oeuvres to create a party atmosphere. The Clubhouse’s wraparound deck overlooking the course let people enjoy the festivities indoors and outside. Guests helped themselves to a salad bar and tucked into late night snacks at the taco bar, donut table and s’mores station. They also helped themselves to tempting cupcakes made by the bride’s sister and a lovely wedding cake from the Mariposa Market in Orillia. The party heated up with music by the two-piece band

from the ceremony and a live band that played anything and everything. “We had the most fabulous caterers, Clarence Boyes and Gwen Holmes at Fresh Kutz Market and Grill,” says Jared. “They did some really awesome things. We told them how many people were coming and were given exactly what we wanted and needed. Clarence has an eye for things and Gwen has a flair for flavours and foods.” Before the ceremony, photos of the wedding party were taken at the bride’s home, around the golf course and at Santa’s Village in Bracebridge. Santa’s Village has a special place in the bride’s heart. Emily’s parents have been managers at the attraction since she was fouryears-old and has always been a big part of her world. “My Dad is still there and my Mom runs the store,” says Emily. “The Village put in a beautiful new carousel and we had photos taken on it. I went in feeling like a princess

and a little girl who saw me actually called me a princess. I thought I would cry. It was wonderful.” One of the bride’s favourite memories from their wedding day was a First Look on the dock at her parents’ home. A cousin from Holland had surprised Emily and Jared by coming to the wedding. “I only wanted Jared, me and the photographer to be at the First Look,” recalls Emily. “But my cousin was in a car on the other side of the river quietly taking pictures of us. After the First Look, he started shouting to us and it was so funny. There are photos of Jared and I pointing at him across the river and laughing.” After the wedding festivities were over, it was time for some rest and relaxation for the newlyweds. They celebrated their marriage with a week-long honeymoon in Costa Rica.

H
annah Lindsay and Jeff Hook had just entered high school when Carly Ververs, a mutual friend, introduced them to each other. After that meeting, well meaning friends tried to persuade the two Grade 9 students to start dating. When those efforts didn’t work, the friends left them alone. It was only after the pressure was off and a few months had gone by that Hannah and Jeff decided to go out on a date. The teenagers’ relationship grew from friendship to love. It endured as their lives developed and eventually led to Jeff’s proposal to Hannah. She said yes, and plans for their wedding on July 20, 2019 began. When considering their wedding date, Hannah and Jeff both wanted a summer wedding that was not on a long weekend out of respect for the busy lives of their 100 guests. They also wanted to have enough time to go on a honeymoon before Hannah returned to her teaching position in the fall. Hannah and Jeff had a slight edge when looking for wedding vendors. Hannah’s Dad is also known as DJ Ken Lindsay of Big Event Entertainment. When choosing their wedding date, another consideration was Ken’s busy wedding season. They worked with his schedule to find an available date and July 20 was perfect. After working as a wedding DJ for many years, Ken knew many of the vendors that the couple were considering. “We had a very easy time finding people because a lot of them are my Dad’s friends,” says Hannah. “It made the planning process easy for us. When I was growing up, he would show me all the pictures from the wedding he did the night before. When he showed me pictures of The Gibson Centre in Alliston, I thought that’s the place where I want to get married. As soon as we got engaged, we went and looked at it. We both thought it was beautiful and loved the industrial feel.” The couple loved the idea of having both the ceremony and reception at The Gibson Centre. With the

Centre already a showplace, only a minimum of wedding décor needed to be brought to the ceremony and reception location. The couple’s ten-person wedding party included Maid of Honour (and matchmaker) Carly Ververs, Best Man Aaron Doughery and Master of Ceremonies/Groomsman Matt Garwood. The bride and groom were elated to have Rev. Gwen Lindsay, Hannah’s grandmother, as the officiant at their ceremony. Hannah’s personal rule for their wedding day was “no tears, no stress”, and that’s how the day proceeded for the bride. “All the bridesmaids and groomsmen were hanging together before the ceremony,” says Hannah. “Someone had brought in food and we had music playing. I started to get nervous, but remembered my rule and just started dancing. It was funny, but it worked.” To start the ceremony, Jeff and his groom’s party walked down the aisle to “Sweet Thing” by Van Morrison. Soon afterwards, the bride and her ladies came down to meet them to Jonsi’s “We Bought A Zoo”. After Hannah and Jeff exchanged their vows before Rev. Lindsay, their long time love shifted into a new chapter as they shared their first kiss as husband and wife. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour to the accompaniment of live music by Louis Lefaive. Louis had been Hannah and Jeff’s high school music teacher and they loved that he was able to both be a guest and provide music at their wedding. The couple also had live music performed by someone dear to them for their first dance. Hannah’s Dad Ken Lindsay accompanied the dancers acoustically on guitar. For dinner, guests were treated to a delicious dinner of prime rib, roasted potatoes, mixed vegetables, salads and a cheesecake for a sweet finish. Guests also received a sweet treat to take home - the initial of their first name in chocolate made in Holland. The late night snack was a selection of pizzas from Domino’s Pizza. But before the pizza arrived, a whole lot of dancing happened as everyone hit the floor to a mix of Top 40 party music from the present and bygone eras. “We had a pretty good party,” says Hannah with a smile. “We wanted to have all our friends together having a good time in one place. We danced right until the last call. In fact, everyone would have kept going if we hadn’t needed to shut down.” The couple’s advice to friends getting married in the future and all other upcoming brides and 28 Wedding Trends 2020

grooms is to start planning early and do as much as possible right off the bat. Hannah feels doing what could be done in advance of the wedding day kept her from feeling overwhelmed. “Our early planning let us book The Gibson Centre two years in advance, long before anyone else wanted that date,” says Hannah. “We were also able to get first pick of the vendors we wanted because no one else had booked them yet.” The newlyweds honeymooned in Nova Scotia, using the scenic community of Bedford as a base to hike, whale watch and explore different parts of the province. “We went from end to end, from Digby to Cape Breton,” says Jeff. “It was absolutely beautiful.” We drove there and stayed overnight in Old Levis, taking the ferry across to Quebec City.

W
hat are the chances that three children who grew up as friends in the same neighbourhood in Oro-Medonte, Ontario would eventually get married within a week of each other? Jaclyn McAlpine and Josh Cornacchia know the odds are extremely good. Jaclyn and Josh married a week before Josh’s childhood friend tied the knot in Italy, and another week later a third childhood friend married in Belgium. In fact, the couple pushed their wedding forward to join 20 friends, many who attended their wedding, to fly to Europe for the third wedding. Afterwards, they travelled to Spain with their friends and went as a duo to Italy. Not a bad itinerary for their first trip to Europe. The couple met on the September long weekend in 2013. Josh picked up Jaclyn and took her to a movie.

“Afterwards he asked me to go for a drink and took me through the drive thru at Tim Horton’s,” Jaclyn recalls, laughing. “Then he dropped me off. I didn’t know it, but that was the beginning of our love story. I still joke with him about how romantic our first date was.” The journey to Jaclyn and Josh’s wedding started in December 2017 at the Toronto Christmas Market. Josh was looking for the perfect place to propose. Turned out, the best place to pop the question was outdoors in the chilly weather as they were leaving. “I expected he would propose at dinner before we went to the market,” recalls Jaclyn. “When it didn’t happen, I forgot about it so I was surprised.” Jaclyn and Josh decided to do a First Look and picked the gorgeous Sunnidale Park with its fairy tale setting. With the blossoms in bloom, the scenery provided a romantic backdrop for Josh’s first look at his soon-to-be bride. The couple chose the classy, elegant Barrie Country Club as the venue for their outdoor ceremony and indoor reception on June 8, 2019. Though it was one of the hottest days of the month, their 150 guests were happy to be there for Jaclyn and Joshua. Friends and family came from Amsterdam, Scotland, British Columbia and Calgary to be part of their special day. Matron of Honour Jennifer Giffen and bridesmaids Tabatha Graham-Darby, Amanda Wiesner, Natalie Downing, Brittany Canuel, and Kayla Boudreau came down the aisle to “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri. for them were the groom, Best Man/brother Matthew Cornacchia and groomsmen Spencer Braun, Ryan Downing, Daniel Cardarelli, Robert Balmer and the bride’s brother Alex McAlpine. Mini groomsmen Austin Giffen, Kodah McAlpine and Porter Boudreau-Branco and flower girl Allis Giffin made sure the rings arrived. Wearing a fitted vintage-look lace gown with beautiful sparkling crystals that was customized to her specifications, the bride walked down the aisle on the arm of her father, to the acoustic version of “Every Little Thing” by Carly Pearce. Josh’s cousin RoseMary Torelli lovingly officiated for the couple. The bride’s favourite ceremony memory is of her new husband getting choked up with the emotion of the moment. Afterwards, a convivial cocktail hour featured an amazing antipasto bar. Guests enjoyed a savoury dinner of prime rib, chicken or a vegetarian entrée. Between courses, speeches were given by the bride’s parents, the groom’s mother and brother, Matron of Honour Jennifer and the newlyweds themselves. In memory of Josh’s father, who passed away nine years ago, donations were made to the Canadian Cancer Society in lieu of guest favours. “All of the speeches were really amazing,” recalls Jaclyn. that ranged from oldies to current classics and country music. The party ended with the bride’s favourite hits from the 2000s. Looking back, Jaclyn says the day was absolutely perfect despite the DJ playing the song initially chosen for their first dance instead of the one substituted later. No problem – he played both for the newlyweds. Including some aspects of their heritage was important to the couple. Jaclyn’s English/ Scottish background was represented by the thistles in her bouquet and favourite Yorkshire pudding with dinner and for Josh’s Italian background, the sumptuous antipasto bar. When it comes to wedding planning, Jaclyn advises future brides and grooms to try to stay on budget as much as possible while knowing you will likely exceed your budget. “Having a budget in mind and a visual of everything you need will help keep you on track,” says Jaclyn. “Our priority was to make sure we were surrounded by close family, friends and loving people. We focused our day on really enjoying everyone being with us, living in the moment and really embracing the day. It went by very quickly, but it was a perfect day.”

artha Johnston suspected the moon couldn’t be seen from inside the barn when Chris Bennett invited her up to the loft to see the silvery orb. Her partner had phoned her many times with the same request while walking their dog, so she headed out to the barn and climbed the stairs. “He had lots of lights tied to the rafters so he was standing under an arch of light,” recalls Martha. “It was really cute. He got down on one knee and I cried through the whole proposal. Our dog was sitting beside him, so it was perfect. But he’s so sneaky! I would have thought he would propose when we looked nice, but we were both wearing rubber boots. It was so cool it to get engaged on our property.” The December 2018 proposal gave the couple the opportunity to hold the first nuptials at their new wedding venue, Evergreen Acres. They created the perfect place for a wedding on their idyllic 50-acre property in Severn Township near Orillia. Evergreen Acres will open to the public this summer, but Martha and Chris anticipate most bookings will come in for 2021. They originally were just looking for a home in Simcoe County with property. “When we toured the place we have now, we spent ten minutes at the house and the rest of the time outside and in the barn,” says Martha. “We were totally blown away by how much we loved it. When you’re in the barn, it’s so majestic. That’s what promoted the idea of a wedding venue.” Knowing how beautiful their property is in the summer, they chose August 17, 2019 as their wedding date. The date was also when Catering By Colin, their preferred caterer, was available. Many friends and family members offered to help with wedding preparations, especially the week before the wedding. “We had a ton of people who were just awesome and helped us pull it off,” says Martha.

To create a pastoral outdoor ceremony area, Chris cut an aisle in a hayfield and a rectangle for the guests’ chairs. He also did a good deal of landscaping, gilding the naturally beautiful countryside. On the morning of the big day, a torrential downpour prevented setting anything up for the ceremony. The bride and groom kept checking the weather forecast and hoped for the best. A break in the rain gave them time for a fast First Look. When guests started arriving, the groom and his groomsmen changed into t-shirts and shorts and ran chairs into the back field. The weather cleared a mere half hour before the wedding. Best Men Jason and Steve and groomsmen Blair, Tony and Martha’s brother Rob changed back into their grey dress pants, brown shoes and white shirts with burgundy ties. Chris donned his wedding attire including a navy suit jacket with burgundy bow tie. They joined Chris’ Dad, the couple’s officiant, at the ceremony site to watch Matron of Honour and bride’s sister Megan, Maid of Honour Ashley and bridesmaids Lisa, sister-in-law Lauralynn and Chris’ sister Jacqueline walk down the aisle among the 130 guests. The bride made her way to her love’s side to Haley Klinkhammer’s acoustic cover of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. As they were pronounced husband and wife, the newlywed’s dog, who had been very well behaved, seemed to sense the excitement. “She ripped across the front,” laughs Martha. “It was totally unplanned and just adorable. It was like the releasing of the doves.” Guests moved into the updated pole barn for a cocktail hour that featured a candy bar with ‘to go’ bags and butter tarts. A served buffet featured roast beef, chicken, seasoned potatoes and roasted root vegetables, salads and an assorted cheesecake bar for dessert. Everyone agreed the food was amazing. “Catering by Colin was phenomenal, we really loved them,” says Martha. Speeches, including a humorous one by Martha’s boss, were a hit. Then everyone was ready to dance. A technical glitch with the couple’s playlist was solved by streaming Apple Music. “We would describe our reception music as eclectic, unpredictable and at times inappropriate,” says Martha, smiling. “There was a heavy metal song that came on, but we had a laid back group celebrating with us and everyone just rolled with it!” After the newlyweds waved goodbye as school buses drove their guests back to their 36 Wedding Trends 2020

hotels, they had time to reflect on seeing their wedding enterprise from a bride and groom’s eye view. “It was awesome to go through the bride and groom experience,” says Martha, “We have put so much work into every aspect of this project from electrical to floors and landscaping. It was an amazing feeling to be able to get ready in the house and just walk into the backyard for the wedding. It was so meaningful to host our wedding on our property and see it all come together.”

arah Gabriel had a strong intuitive feeling that her long-time love Andrew Bakogeorge was going to propose at Christmas in 2017. Andrew had always said his ten year plan was to get married after being together for ten years, and this was year nine. However, he told Sarah’s family that he was surprising her with a vacuum cleaner, a Dyson in fact, for Christmas. “On Christmas Day, I said to him ‘Where’s my vacuum?’” says Sarah, laughing. “Then he got down on one knee in front of my family, including my parents Ron and Juanita, and proposed. He had told everyone he was getting me a vacuum cleaner. But on Christmas Eve, he asked my Dad for permission to marry me so my Dad knew. My parents adore Andrew. He and my Dad have a special bond and he has fit in with my family since day one. The whole thing was videoed to show Andrew’s parents, Michael and Patricia Bakogeorge.” Being avid travellers who take a number of trips annually, the couple wanted a destination wedding with the ceremony and reception held on a beautiful beach. Their two-year engagement gave Sarah and Andrew lots of time to thoughtfully choose a resort that suited all 40 guests invited to the November 11, 2019 nuptials. Criteria included a golf course and fabulous food. After the arrival of the couple’s baby daughter Amelia, “family friendly” was added to the must have list. The Paradisus Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic was their ultimate choice. “We chose the Dominican Republic because it would be a warm place to go in November, the food would please everyone and the beaches are gorgeous,” explains Sarah. “This particular venue would cater to all our personalized needs to make our wedding day ‘ours’.” Most of the wedding decor details were decided after the couple arrived in the Dominican. Sarah and Andrew met with their photographer, wedding coordinator and other vendors at the resort and put their plans in place in about five hours. Having all the festivities right on the beach fit the couple’s relaxed theme of Chill-out Chic. A casual pre-wedding reception was held the night before at the Beach Bar. 2020 WEDDING TRENDS 39

Their seaside beach ceremony/reception site was outfitted with table and chairs, lots of twinkle lights, lanterns set on large pieces of rustic wood and a generous dance floor. By coincidence, the emerald green of the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s ties complemented the beach’s palm trees as perfectly as the bride’s cream-coloured mermaid-style gown mirrored the hue of the beach sands. Happily, the weather was sunny and beautiful for the outdoor celebrations. The couple’s young daughter Amelia waved to guests as she walked down the aisle with her best friend, Sarah’s Mom. The bridal party of Kailey McDonough, Chelsea Pasquino, Justin Pauley, Luke Swanek and Chris Bakogeorge walked down the aisle to “One Man Band” by Old Dominion, followed by the bride who walked to her groom to “Oasis” played on the ukulele. After the minster had introduced the couple and welcomed the guests, Amelia, who had been sitting beside her grandmother, stood up and walked over to her parents. The adorable toddler looked up at them and then took their hands. She stayed there for most of the ceremony. “She was an absolute gem,” says Sarah. “It was so amazing to have her at the wedding and be part of it. Amelia had just started to talk. When she first saw me in my dress, she said ‘Mama pretty’. That just melts your heart.” After an oceanfront cocktail hour, guests were treated to a robust grill-style buffet featuring lobster, chicken, pork and steak. Loaded baked potatoes with bacon, grilled vegetables, and salad and dessert stations accompanied the entrees. A lovely vanilla wedding cake with fondant icing gave the meal a sweet ending. Among the speeches at the reception, one in particular became a fond memory for the bride. “My Dad gave a really, really good speech,” says Sarah. “He talked about how Andrew has always been part of the family. When Andrew first saw Amelia when she was born, my Dad said he could tell that Andrew was going to be a good dad because there was such a connection. Of course, my Dad didn’t write his speech down. He went by the seat of his pants, but that’s who he is.” Family friend and professional DJ Jordan Richardson with G&B SharpShooters in Barrie kept the dance floor full with the bride and groom’s request to play a mix of music from every genre to please all of their guests. 40 Wedding Trends 2020

I
t could be said that Madison Borley and Christopher Waldock’s marriage was made in Muskoka. Huntsville native Madison met cottager turned Huntsville resident Chris at the On The Docks Pub in Huntsville during 2015. “When I asked him to dance, he declined!” recalls Madison of meeting her future husband. “He did, however, proceed to buy me a drink and explain that he didn’t want his dance moves to be my first impression.” Madison liked Chris’s first impression just
fine. Fast forward to December 21, 2018 at Tall Trees Restaurant in Huntsville. Madison noticed her love seemed very nervous. The roses on the table and a private dining room also struck her as suspicious yet cute. Little did she know that Chris and his Mom had been ring shopping a few weeks before. He popped the question, she happily said yes, and the wedding planning began. They wanted to marry outdoors in Muskoka and close to the water because they spend most

of their free time on the lake. The perfect place turned out to be the dock at the home of Chris’s parents on Mary Lake. The eager couple wanted to tie the knot ASAP. “We gave ourselves just enough time to plan everything and have a beautiful summer wedding,” says Madison of their August 24, 2019 date. “It was important to both of us to have warm weather. I was lucky to have Chris’s mom helping me out. Their home means so much to us. We’ve spent much of our relationship out on the water there. I kind of dropped a hint to his mom that we would love to get married on the dock, and she agreed,” Madison asked close friend Chloe Harris to be her Maid of Honour. Chris had good friend Jason MacDonald as his Best Man. Three bridesmaids and three groomsmen rounded out the wedding party. Though most of their 100 guests stood beside the dock for the short ceremony, immediate family sat on benches made by Chris from his grandmother’s old wooden dock. The ‘aisle’ to the dock was a flight of rock steps descending through the scenic property. When his bride walked down to meet him, dressed in a gorgeous Amy Couture gown, Chris was given a beautiful memory. “Watching Madison come down the stairs was amazing,” says Chris. “I also loved watching her dance with her Dad, and hearing the speeches at the reception.” The bride equally cherished her walk down to meet her love. “It was the real deal when I came down the aisle and everyone was there,” recalls Madison. “Our families are so important to us. When I got to the dock, I saw that Chris was barely holding

it together emotionally. When he and my Dad saw each other as we reached the dock, it was very special for me.” The couple exchanged vows on the dock beneath a birch arch made by Chris. The happy groom was inclined to jump the gun when it came to the wedding kiss. He kept trying to plant one on his bride before the marriage ceremony was completed. “I had to block him,” laughs Madison. “He was really going for it.” The wedding party’s photo session moved along quickly so they could join the festivities. The couple loved being photographed in the boat they use every evening for fishing. In their fancy wedding attire, the newlyweds trolled a few fishing rods and relaxed together. “Our photographers, Greg and Jody Waldock, were amazing,” says Chris of his cousin Greg and his wife. “We had about 25 minutes for photos and they got over 10,000 pictures. They used two cameras from different angles.” Chris’s mother sourced about 1,000 lights to illuminate the large reception tent set in the forest beside the home’s driveway. Custom crackers with a birch bark finish popped open to give each guest a paper crown and a trivia question about the bride and groom. The outstanding food from local vendors Fresh Kutz, Granny Lyn’s Kitchen and Vince’s Market drew raves from guests. Even the small jars of maple syrup were made locally at Maple Bluff Farm. Looking back, Madison and Chris agree the day went even better than they hoped. Madison advises future brides to take more time to plan than they did, and do one more thing. “Get along well with your mother-in-law and she will help you out!” says Madison. “But really, a longer engagement gives you the time to get everything you want.”

A
lana Evans and Ryan Cain grew up near the small, scenic village of Windermere in Muskoka. With Ryan being four years older than Alana, their paths didn’t cross until July 2009, the summer before Alana left for university. The pair met at the Windermere Pub one summer night and it could be said that this was the beginning of their lifelong love letter. They shared a first kiss, secretly witnessed by Alana’s sisters and future bridesmaids Tori and Megan Evans, and childhood friend and ‘brosmaid’ Evan Wilding. After seven years together, Alana accepted Ryan’s marriage proposal at Toronto Pearson International Airport, upon her return home from her travels to Japan and Southeast Asia. The couple set their wedding date for 11 months later on July 21, 2018 because of their joint love of summertime in Muskoka and it just so happened that Alana’s “must have” photographer, Scott Turnbull, was available too! Inviting an intimate gathering of immediate family and their closest friends to celebrate with them, the couple chose Windermere Golf & Country Club for their reception. For his wedding party, Ryan included brother Brodie Cain, childhood friend Darren Gardner and sister Gillian Cain. Wedding plans hinged on contractor Ryan’s long held wish to be married on a barge. Alana was not on board. So, he took his future bride to see the barge, one he had already spoken for, anchored on a job site on Lake Rosseau. “When I first saw it, I cried,” says Alana. “It was full of equipment and I had no idea how this would come together. In the end, I wouldn’t have changed a single detail. To be married on the water with the intimacy of close family and friends was incredibly memorable. We wanted

our wedding to be a true reflection of who we are and of the life we had built together. As kids and as a couple, we spent every summer enjoying Muskoka and being on the water with friends and family.” Under sunny skies, 75 wedding guests boarded the barge, at the home of the groom’s father on Lake Rosseau. On the floating venue covered in beach sand, the wedding crew and guests witnessed the exchanging of vows on Portage Bay. Amidst a beautiful Muskoka backdrop, Alana walked down the aisle with her father to the sound of “I Choose You” by Sara Bareilles. Afterwards, while the guests enjoyed a casual yet elegant dockside cocktail hour on Lake Rosseau the bride and groom sped off in the father of the bride’s 1968 candy apple red Camaro SS for some loud, smoky photos. A simple décor of florals, vases with floating candles and tiny Muskoka chairs placed on granite stone slabs holding the name of a Muskoka lake to identify each table captured the essence of Muskoka. “Because we already had two beautiful venues for the ceremony and reception we wanted minimal décor, allowing the true beauty of Muskoka to shine,” said Alana. After a plated meal, guests were treated to Alana’s grandmother’s renowned wine cakes served with vanilla ice cream and strawberries. “My Grandma’s wine cake is a must have at every family occasion,” explains Alana. “It was part of the important personal touches we 2020 Wedding Trends 47

wanted to include in our day. It was a huge hit and our guests loved it.” The newlywed’s first dance to “A Moment Like This” by Kelly Clarkson was followed by one of the couple’s infamous dance offs to Michael Jackson. The bride choreographed a surprise duet dance to Jackson’s Smooth Criminal. “My brother Brodie and stepdad had a bet that we would break into a Michael Jackson dance,” says Ryan, with a grin. “No one knew about it but our DJ and our guests erupted into cheers when they realized an MJ duet was about to go down.” That set the stage for a night of celebration and dancing outside, under the stars. With Alana’s love of travel, she couldn’t wait to take her now husband on an adventure to one of her bucket list travel destinations for their honeymoon. While the wedding was beyond all expectations, their honeymoon
in Bali and the Gili Islands didn’t go quite as planned. While enjoying an ocean side dinner, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook the small island of Gili Trawangan. With the threat of a tsunami, Alana and Ryan fled to the highest point on the island where they spent the night surrounded by fellow tourists and residents enduring continuous aftershocks. Thanks to kind locals and help from their families back in Canada, Alana and Ryan arrived safely home on August 7th with only their passports and the clothes on their backs. “While our dream honeymoon was cut short and did not unfold as planned, it was a real test of our strength as a couple and reinforced the vows we had recently exchanged with one another,” says Alana. “We are true lifelong partners and through this experience we have learned that we can endure anything as a couple.”

or Kirsten Jakobsen, who spent every summer at her family’s cottage near Gravenhurst in Muskoka, and Michael Rutledge, who loves the outdoors and spent every summer camping with his family, getting married outdoors somewhere in Muskoka was a given. But with many guests travelling from far distances, they wanted to make sure they had lots of time to spend with everyone. “You only get this shot once to have all of your loved ones together, so we decided to make ours a weekend wedding,” says Kirsten. “We could chat with everyone throughout the weekend.” While they were looking for a suitable venue, the couple thought of Camp Muskoka, a summer camp in Bracebridge. Kirsten’s younger cousin had gone there and loved it. Kirsten and Michael toured the camp and decided they wanted to share this special place with their friends and family. The camp could accommodate their 155 guests and 14-person wedding party. September 7, 2019 was the perfect wedding date – after the campers left but while summery weather was still around. Guests arrived at Camp Muskoka on Friday night in time for cocktail hour on the camp’s patio overlooking Cougar Lake. Afterwards, the dinner was followed by a campfire and a “roast” of the bride and groom. “Some of our friends made fun of us and my Grandma told a funny story,” says Kirsten. “It was a lot of fun and a good way to break the ice because many of our friends were meeting for the first time. After the roast we had music and drinks. There were materials to make s’mores. Everyone was around the campfire for the rest of the evening. It was a really beautiful night.” After breakfast on Saturday morning, everyone headed outside for games in the sunny weather. Meanwhile, benches from the dining hall were moved down to the ceremony site on the dock for the guests. The couple’s wedding planner decorated the aisle and front of the dock with simple

florals and wooden plinths. With the lake as backdrop, nothing else was needed. Another dock, namely the one at Kirsten’s family cottage, was the scene for the couple’s engagement. One summer evening, Michael totally surprised his love by dropping to one knee and asking her to marry him. “We had talked about marriage but not about rings,” says Kirsten. “He ended up doing a great job with the ring. It was one of the first summer weekends we’d had time to ourselves there, so he picked that moment.” On a different dock at the Camp, the bride and groom braved their First Look. They navigated over wood made slippery by the rain and mud that threatened to rough up the bride’s white gown. “It was quite the adventure to make sure I didn’t go flying right before the ceremony,” says Kirsten, with a laugh. “But it was really nice. The photographer got some great shots.” Just before the wedding ceremony, the stubborn clouds parted and the sun shone. And the wind blew. As Kirsten and her mother were walking over a little bridge on the way to the dock, the wind grabbed her veil and blew it off. With cat-like reflexes, her Mom grabbed it in mid flight. “We tried to put it back on but it wasn’t really working, so we just kept going,” says Kirsten. Many guests grabbed their cellphones and recorded the memorably humorous moment. With Michael’s brother acting as their officiant, the bride and groom were calm while reading their vows. After their first kiss as spouses, Kirsten, Michael and the happy crowd headed for the reception in The Pavilion whose wraparound patio overlooks Cougar Lake. The beautiful all-wood room laced with twinkle lights only required table arrangements, flowers and additional lighting to be reception ready. After dinner, speeches warmed the hearts of the newlyweds. But for Kirsten, her first dance with her husband is a wonderful memory. “The band played “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood,” says Kirsten. “They did a slow version then moved into a fast one and everyone got up and danced with us. The band was made up of Mike’s family and friends who are all quite talented. Mike, his Dad and two brothers along with friends, including Juno award winner Florence K, played an amazing set.” The couple also felt lucky to have friend Pat McDonald as their DJ. “He always knows how to throw a dance party and kept everyone on the floor until 3:30 52 Wedding Trends 2020

a.m.!” says Kirsten. The couple’s biggest wish for their wedding was to share their love of Muskoka and the outdoors with family and friends. “We wanted a laid back, relaxed vibe for the weekend and that’s totally what happened,” says Kirsten. “It’s like our friends and family were kids again and just enjoying being a camp kid. We want to thank the amazing Camp Muskoka staff for making all of our guests feel right at home, and for making our wedding such a special weekend for everyone.” The newlyweds relaxed on a mini-moon at the cottage on Lake Muskoka for a week and honeymooned in St. Lucia in December.

T
he love story of Julia Brunette and Joshua Coulson had a slow motion start. They met in 2011 while working at The Beer Store. Josh poached Julia’s phone number from the employee call sheet and texted her, asking if she wanted to hang out. She didn’t. However, Josh was persistent. He kept asking, waiting patiently for six long months until finally the lady said yes to a date. The rest, as they say is history. Julia looks back at that decision as the best one she has ever made. The couple became husband and wife on June 22, 2019 when they married at Braestone in Horseshoe Valley. The path to their summer wedding started at the stunning Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. Joshua knew it was the place he would propose to his love. Friends travelling with them knew of his plans which included a drone to photograph the event. “Joshua mentioned he wanted to use a drone at the Cliffs of Moher, so I didn’t think it odd when it appeared,” recalls Julia. “Getting married was something we both wanted, so I knew a proposal was coming but didn’t know when. After he proposed, we celebrated with our friends for the rest of the day. When we got back to the hotel, we called our parents. They already knew, of course. Because we met at The Beer Store, getting engaged in Ireland almost brought us full circle.” June seemed the perfect month for an outdoor ceremony, neither too chilly nor hot. Julia’s lucky number is 2, so June 22 was double the luck. During a charity pancake breakfast at Braestone with Joshua’s parents, who live in the community, the couple fell in love with the gorgeous property and its refurbished vintage barn. They chose it as their wedding venue. For his wedding party, Josh asked his brother Drew Coulson and friends Jake Treloar, Josh Keenan and Brandon Reid. Julia chose sister Madison Brunette and friends Alex Treloar, Meghan Wensauer and Trista Wensauer. Having the wedding ceremony beside the property’s horse paddock was not only scenic and shady 2020 WEDDING TRENDS 57

on the sunny day, but added some horseplay to the proceedings. “The horses in the paddock decided to peek over the fence while everyone was waiting for me,” says Julia, with a smile. “Half way through the ceremony, they galloped together alongside the fence. It was beautiful!” The bride’s other favourite wedding memory had guests saying this was funniest wedding they had ever attended. Like every bride and groom, Julia and Joshua were both nervous. “I kept messing up throughout the ceremony,” says Julia. “One photo is of me with my head back laughing. We were nervous, but it was a very relaxed ceremony. It all came together with everyone laughing, me giggling, and the horses watching everything.” Musician Jeremiah Hill provided superb music for the ceremony, playing an acoustic version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley as Julia came down the aisle. He also entertained the crowd during cocktail hour. A totally unexpected highlight for the newlyweds were photos taken as they rowed a small, but not entirely clean, rowboat around a pretty pond. The photographer suggested they climb in for a row, but with a white dress the bride was hesitant. “Josh said photos are what we will look at for the rest of our lives and this will be a cool experience so let’s try it,” says Julia. “Honestly, those were the best photos. I’m glad we took the chance. Josh and I laughed the whole time we were in the boat. What were the odds we would be sitting in a boat with me in a wedding dress and him in a nice suit?” For the reception, Braestone’s rustic but modern barn was softly illuminated by scores of candles and softened with a variety of florals. Long runners of greenery graced the tables and fresh flowers adorned the head table. Guests were served chicken breast, beef with mashed potatoes or a vegetable tower. The late night arrival of the Smoke’s Poutinerie food truck was very popular. Sweet tooths were satisfied with a candy table that included M&Ms personalized with the couple’s wedding date. Another sweet spot in the evening was the speeches. “The kind words from our parents, best friends and siblings meant so much to me,” says Julia. “It was wonderful to mingle with everyone at the reception and finally be able to talk with them.” The newlyweds honeymooned in France, Italy and Switzerland for three wonderful weeks.

T
he theme song for Leigh Metcalf and Matthew Zakowski’s relationship could be “Let It Snow!” After getting engaged, the snow-loving couple wanted an absolutely perfect winter wedding. Knowing February usually had more snow than January, they set February 9, 2019 as their date. Then, they went in search of the most winter-friendly wedding venue. “I researched ‘princess winter weddings’ and of the many places we looked at we knew the Royal Ambassador in Caledon was where we would say ‘I Do’,” says Leigh. “It was beyond perfect with a lovely landscape, stunning views and the ideal winter location. We had our ceremony outside in a beautiful gazebo.” Leigh and Matthew decided that if the temperature fell below -10C on their wedding day, the ceremony would move into part of their large reception area at the Royal Ambassador. While they were decorating the gazebo the day before, a blizzard set in. Leigh’s Dad and brother tried their best to wrap poles in pink tulle and lights, but things were so icy and snowy, it looked like the outdoor ceremony was probably not happening. “When we had to make a final call that night, our minister said it’s going to be just fine,” says Leigh. “We trusted him. The next day, my parents and a few friends went to make sure everything was set up properly. It was -9C with sunny blue skies. We couldn’t have imagined better weather. It was chilly, but all 160 guests knew it was to be an outdoor ceremony and dressed for it!” Wearing matching white fur coats and mittens from the bride, Maid of Honour and sister Mallory Metcalf, and bridesmaids Kelly Hadfield, Becky Simms, Niquita Amirkhanian, Kate Hodgins, Jess Hillier and Laura Heitto were warm as they heralded the approach of the bride. In the gazebo, the groom waited with Best Man Alexander Zetzl and groomsmen John Hillier, Christopher Zetzl, Sean Dunlop, Jordan Latorre, and bride’s brothers Kyle and John Metcalf. As Leigh came down the aisle, violinist Orsi Lengyel from Wellington Music performed “Tale As Old As Time” from Beauty and the Beast, one of a selection of Disney songs played during the ceremony. The bride wore a custom princess-style gown with corset bodice and 175 hand-sewn snowflakes in shades of pink and layers of sparkle. Her late grandmother’s fur coat was custom cropped to fit smoothly over the gown. The couple’s wedding rings from New Zealand and engraved with an original poem in Elvish, a tribute to their love of Lord of the Rings. “The night before, our minster said he had a surprise for us,” says Leigh. “Before we said our vows, 2020 WEDDING TRENDS 61

we wanted to read the poem on our rings, but our minster had learned the entire poem in Elvish. He read it and had us repeat it back to one another which was so cool.” The ceremony reflected the couple’s engagement at Disney World during a dinner at the park’s castle, complete with princesses. After dinner, dessert was two glasses of champagne and a decorative slipper holding rose petals and an engagement ring. Matt got down one knee, asked the question and Leigh said yes. “All the princesses came over and congratulated me,” recalls Leigh. “The best moment was when we got married, but that was the second best. On our first wedding anniversary, we are going back to Disney to celebrate.” The bride and groom’s entrance at the reception included a choreographed techno dance that mellowed into a slow swing. In recognition of the groom’s love of sugar, the first course at dinner was a cupcake by Mike Sauve, The Cake Guy. A delicious dinner followed, as did a late night Waffle Station with ice cream and toppings. Leigh’s mother added a special personal touch to the head table. Echoing the song from Beauty and the Beast that accompanied the bride down the aisle, she designed Beauty and the Beast’s enchanted rose and had it placed under a glass dome. The beautiful flower was set on the table in front of the newlyweds. With instructions to the DJ to play wedding classics and freestyle, the dance floor was packed all night. For their honeymoon, the adventurous newlyweds climbed the Hekla volcano in Iceland, saw their favourite DJs in Ibiza, toured Paris and Amsterdam, and went with friends to Tomorrowland, the largest techno festival in the world. Looking back on their wedding day, Leigh is extremely grateful for the constant support from Matt while planning their wedding, and for the loving help from her parents and inlaws. To future brides and grooms, Leigh says that the only person that can ruin your wedding is you. “I’m so grateful to Matt for reminding me throughout our wedding preparations that things will happen and not go exactly as we planned,” says Leigh. “He said it will end up being the most perfect day because of the way you make it and because you will be with the person you love most. If you love someone and you are excited about that day, it’s going to be a perfect no matter what happens.” 62 Wedding Trends 2020

W
hen Stephanie Taleporos and Jesse McAleese saw the lovely outdoor chapel and tropical paradise in the greenhouse for receptions at Madsen’s Greenhouse in Newmarket, they knew they had found the venue for their wedding. “We wanted an outdoor, whimsical, relaxed feel for our wedding and Madsen’s had the perfect vibe for us,” says Stephanie, who was able to reserve one of only two dates left in 2019. With a garden wedding in mind, the couple chose August 17, 2019 as their wedding day and began to make plans. Stephanie and Jesse’s love story began when they were teenagers living in Innisfil. They met at St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School in Barrie and attended the University of Western Ontario before moving back to Innisfil. When Jesse began studies at the Chiropractic College in Toronto, the couple moved to Thornhill. After graduation Jesse was able to practice in the Innsifil area and they happily moved home. After becoming engaged, they invited 100 family members and friends to celebrate with them. When Stephanie and her friends went searching for her dream wedding dress, the bride has only one concern. “I didn’t want Jesse to see me and wonder why I picked that dress,” she says with a laugh. “After I found a dress that I adored, my friends said he is going to absolutely love this dress. And he did.” Before the ceremony, Stephanie and Jesse had a quiet First Look. Seeing Jesse alone before the wedding was important to his bride. “When a friend got married last summer, he said his favourite part of the day was the First Look because it was a moment just between him and his love,” says Stephanie. “I decided that if a groom felt that way, we would do it too. It was a very nice moment. Jesse looked so great in his suit, very handsome. The day gets busy and there are people you want to see, but this was just about us. It lets

you step back and enjoy your day.” At the outdoor chapel, Stephanie followed her quartet of bridesmaids down the aisle to “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” by the Piano Guys. The bride cherishes a special moment from the ceremony. “When my husband was giving his vows, it kind of got to me,” says Stephanie. “I knew I was next, so I had to recompose myself. I have always loved the traditional vows. It’s special to me that so many couple that are in love and still married have said the same vows. When Jesse was saying them, it was special to hear him saying those same vows to me. For me, that was a highlight of our wedding day.” For Jesse, the memorable moments happened all day. “There were so many special moments on our wedding day,” says Jesse. “Just having all the people we care about and love in the same room was really amazing.” The gorgeous tropical plants and trees in Madsen’s leafy, elegant greenhouse gave the newlyweds’ reception a relaxed outdoors feeling. The delicious dinner featured SoCal salad with raspberry-poppy seed dressing, and a choice of pan-seared Mahi Mahi, herb crusted rib eye au jus or Mushroom Wellington. The meal finished with either chocolate caramel Fantasy Crème Brulee or hand crafted strawberry Cheesecake. Late night appetites were satisfied with a Poutine Bar and donuts in assorted flavours. After dinner, the dance floor heated up with everyone moving to the upbeat music supplied by DJ Rick from Dynamic Music Solutions.

Dancers could take a break and visit the photo booth where guests were invited to shoot pictures and take them home as a souvenir of the day. The couple credited Madsen’s staff for helping to make everything to go smoothly. “The people at Madsen’s Greenhouse were amazing,” says Jesse. “They took care of everything. In the morning it was a bit stormy and they set up chairs for an indoor ceremony. When the sun came out, they had everything set up outside for us in about 10 minutes.” When it came to planning their wedding, Stephanie and Jesse remained laid back and didn’t stress out. “No matter what happens or doesn’t happen, you’ll still end up married by the end of the day,” says Stephanie. “If thing don’t go exactly as planned, you’ll have a good story to tell later.”

hen Vrudhi Shah met Rishi Mirchandani at a mutual friend’s wedding in 2015, she dismissed the idea of dating him. He was 6 ft. 3 inches tall and Vrudhi wasn’t fond of high heels. But after meeting his future wife, Rishi was on a mission to change her mind. Happily, Rishi’s romantic quest to prove to Vrudhi that he was the one for her was successful. On June 22, 2019, the couple married on a clear, beautiful day on a mountaintop at Blue Mountain Resort in front of a gathering of 270 international guests from Singapore, Jakarta, Australia, Dubai, Muscat, London, India and Toronto. Vrudhi and Rishi wanted to have a weekend-long destination wedding where they could spend quality time with their family and friends. As a nearby destination, Blue Mountain Resort offered everything they imagined for their wedding – a beautiful location, proximity to their home in Toronto, a head chef skilled at South Asian, Indonesian, Thai and vegetarian/vegan cuisine, and enough accommodation for their friends and family. That included the 400 guests attending their reception. As well, Vrudhi and Rishi’s wedding would be the first full-fledged South Asian wedding to be held at Blue Mountain Resort. Rishi and Vrudhi met in Toronto after moving to Canada from Indonesia and Oman respectively. Wedding celebrations started at Vrudhi’s parents’ home on Wednesday with the haldi ceremony, a wedding tradition in India where family members adorn the bride with beautifying turmeric. That evening, 100 people had henna put on their hands at Vrudhi’s sister’s home. On Thursday, the bride had henna applied to her legs and hands while the day was open for guests to sightsee. That same evening, the groom’s family hosted a dinner for in-town guests at Rosalinda, a vegan/vegetarian restaurant, before heading to Blue Mountain on Friday. At the Resort, everyone was treated to a wonderful musical evening called the Sangeet. The Sangeet essentially is a pre-party where both sides of the families get familiar with each other and celebrate with some food, music and dance.

Saturday dawned clear and sunny, perfect for a mountain top wedding. Guests boarded shuttle buses for a ride to the summit. Rows of chairs faced the Mandap, a small stage with four decorated pillars that is the ceremony site. This is where the bride and groom perform seven rounds around fire during the wedding ceremony. Traditionally, the groom arrives on horseback, but Rishi and his family arrived by car. Following tradition, they danced towards the Mandap to the beating of a drum called the Dhol. A gate was put up at the Mandap to emulate the tradition of the groom’s family meeting the bride’s family at the gate of the bride’s home. A small cultural ritual took place before everyone entered. Soon after, Vrudhi was walked in by her sister and brother. The bride stepped away from the traditional red and white bridal ensemble to wear a beautiful pink lehenga with an intricately embroidered skirt, dark pink scarf over a blouse and a blush pink scarf on her head. The groom’s face was covered with a cloth as Vrudhi entered and sat down on a chair directly in front of Rishi. “When they removed the covering, both of us felt this is the moment, this is happening,” says Vrudhi. “He had a bit of awe in his look. He didn’t say anything, but his face said everything. Another special memory is the final moment when we were introduced as husband and wife and looked at all our guests. It was overwhelming to know we had family and friends who flew in from all over the world and that our local friends came up to Blue Mountain for the weekend to celebrate with us. That was everything for us.” It was also wonderful for the couple to see many of their international friends meet each other for the first, and perhaps only, time. Many chatted over brunch after the ceremony and later at cocktail hour on the patio at the Village Conference Centre, the site of the reception. Food stations were opened and many people took their plates out to the patio to watch a spectacular two-person fire show, the first of many entertainments that evening. Trained in various forms of dance since the age of 4, Vrudhi surprised her groom with a hip hop routine performed with her brother and two dance friends. The bride also performed a dance with her sister and brother dedicated to their parents and to Vrudhi’s first dance teacher in Oman who was at the wedding. Reception music was a mix of Bollywood and Arabic songs, top 40 tunes, hip hop, reggae, House and electronic dance music. The couple thanked their families, saying they wouldn’t

have been able to get through everything without their help. “Rishi’s family lives in Jakarta and Gibraltar, but they did everything they could to help us,” says Vrudhi. “My immediate family is in Toronto and they and our friends did a lot of running around and making sure things were taken care of for the wedding weekend. We are ever so grateful to everyone who helped us. We are very lucky with the family and friends we have. They are the only reason this entire production was possible.” After the wedding, the newlyweds were in Toronto for a week spending time with their guests. A honeymoon in the Maldives is planned for 2020.

A
t sunset on Canada Day 2018, Jonathan Randall proposed to his love Kayla Buttineau on the rocky shores of beautiful Georgian Bay. So, it was fitting that they married at his fiancée’s dream wedding location – a small island near her family cottage in Bayfield Inlet on Georgian Bay. The bride has family roots in the Bayfield Inlet and Pointe au Baril areas. Her vision was an intimate island ceremony followed by a grand celebration on the mainland. Though the chosen island was flat, had incredible vistas of the Bay, and was only a 15-minute boat ride from the mainland, there were other considerations. “What we didn’t realize right away was the logistical nightmare of transporting over 100 family and friends to and from the island for the ceremony,” recalls Kayla. “With the help of local cottagers and family members, we established boat taxis to transport our guests. We even pulled three docks out to the island to ensure boat parking. “We also brought out wooden ramps to make a walking trail to the wedding site,” adds Jonathan. “We had three islands picked out. The ceremony location came down to a near last minute decision based on weather conditions. Too much wind would not be ideal, and with no wind it would have been too hot. Local cottagers were eager to drive guests to the island in their boats and show off the landscape. Because of this, we built great relationships. People that I didn’t know before the wedding were friends by the end of the summer.” Because rain had been forecast for their wedding day on July 20, 2019, everyone cheered when the prediction changed during the couple’s rehearsal dinner. Wind cooled the sunny summer day as 110 guests debarked at the island. While standing with the officiant beneath a beautiful archway in front of the guests, Jonathan had a moment he still cherishes. “Part of the plan was that the bridesmaids and bride would come in by boat and do a lap around

the island so all the guests could see them,” says Jonathan. “The song ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ was playing. The moment that sticks with me is waiting anxiously as the boat came around for everyone to see. There were a lot of emotions just then.” A lead boat driven by Kayla’s uncle, an expert at knowing the submerged rocks around the islands, was followed by a larger boat with Kayla, her Mom and Dad, and her bridal party. Everyone was picked up at Kayla’s nearby family cottage. To add drama, a third boat with a photographer was recording the bride’s splashy arrival. “Making our way to the ceremony site by boat was very special because from a distance I could see everybody waiting there on the island,” says Kayla. “My Mom said that was the most memorable point for her as well. My stepdad graciously met us at the dock to catch the boat.” “Kayla’s mom did so much to help us with the planning,” adds Jonathan of their nautical themed wedding. “It’s beyond belief how much she did to help. She said that when she saw the whole crowd of people waiting, she felt the work was worth it to see it all come together.” Jonathan’s parents built the 26 wooden benches to seat the guests, bringing them out by barge ahead of the wedding day. As preparations went on, the community took notice. “The community is close knit around here, so we were the talk of the town,” says Kayla. “The day after the wedding, we felt like celebrities at the marina. Even people who weren’t there knew what happened.” The ceremony began with the arrival of Maid of Honour Kristina and bridesmaids Jenna, Mandy, Katt, Danielle and Candice. Three-year-old ring bearer Kaiden came down the aisle with mom, bridesmaid Katt. He was adorable in a sailor suit carrying a little fishing rod with the wedding rings tied to the end. Under the archway, the groom waited with groomsmen Steve and Colin. The bride came down the aisle with both her mother and father by her side to “I Get To Love You” by Ruelle. After exchanging vows in a ceremony laced with nautical terms, Kayla and Jonathan rang a large bell to announce their marriage to the Bay. Afterwards, guests were ferried back to the marina parking lot to drive to the nearby Pointe au Baril Community Centre for the reception. with motorcycle helmets under their arms. Guests cheered as the newlyweds immediately launched into a first dance, choreographed by the Georgian Bay School of Dance. A delicious buffet dinner was followed with nautically designed cupcakes for dessert. After some heart-felt speeches, everyone headed for the dance floor. For the dance-challenged, games were waiting on the porch. When fireworks started going off somewhere on the Bay, their photographer grabbed the bride and groom for some unexpected but spectacular photos. Every guest left with a Georgian Bay rock hand-painted by the groom’s sister Laura. Each rock came in a little burlap bag with a personalized wood anchor attached and a tag saying “Thanks for celebrating with us, you ROCK!”

H
aving spent every summer together since childhood at their family cottages on Haliburton’s Kushog Lake, Liza Bain and David Vincent planned to marry in a summery setting that embodied everything they love about being up north. But plans for an intimate cottage wedding faded as the guest list grew. The search for a venue with a cottage wedding vibe began. “We saw some beautiful resorts, but we held out for something more intimate,” says Liza, who initially didn’t go out with David because of distance. She lived in Thunder Bay and he lived in Oshawa, so dating happened after university. “We wanted to share quality time with our guests for a weekend. We eventually realized a summer camp would have a cottage feel with access to trails, lakes and all the activities that go with them.” They decided to explore Algonquin Park, a place dear to their hearts, and chose Camp Tamakwa on Tea Lake. A single summer weekend over August 24, 2019 was available. They took it. “One of our main objectives was to have our friends and families able to spend quality time together during a weekend as many guests were travelling across Canada to be with us,” explains Liza. “Camp Tamakwa, which you reach by boat, blew us away with the character, charm and entertainment possibilities it offered.” The cottage themed wedding started with the couple’s engagement at David’s family cottage. “I had Liza convinced that it was going to be another ten years before I proposed,” says David. “It was a nice summer night and we were on the dock. Before I drove her home in the boat, I asked Liza to marry me. It was a pretty big surprise for her and everyone else.” Wedding guests arrived by boat on Friday to enjoy a camp-style dinner and a campfire with live music before settling into their rustic cabins. Saturday started with a delicious camp breakfast and continued with water activities, sports and hiking.

“Saturday was nice because there were no rules,” says David. “People could do what they wanted. Friends could go off on and catch up. Uncles, aunts and friends from far away met for the first time.” Later that warm and sunny day, 120 guests gathered at the Camp’s roofed outdoor Pavilion for the wedding ceremony. Groomsmen Chase, Nic, Steve, Aaron, the bride’s brother Nathan and the groom’s brother Steven waited at the front with David. Bridesmaids Brittany, Kailey, Steph, Kyla, Shelley and the groom’s sister Jenny ( twin to Steven) preceded Liza as she walked down the aisle to meet her love. Liza and David exchanged vows under a graceful birch tree arch twinkling with fairy lights provided by the camp. The arch was created as a surprise for Liza by Seasons in the Country, the Bracebridge florist that also supplied the fresh flowers for the wedding. “It sounds cliché, but I loved when we were talking to our officiant right there in front of everybody,” recalls David. “Though everyone was watching us, I was just locked onto Liza. It really meant a lot to me.” A favourite memory of the bride’s came during the reception after a lovely dinner. “The speeches were just amazing,” says Liza. “They were short but sweet. Our families had us in tears while our Masters of Ceremony, the Hamilton brothers, two of our close friends from the cottage kept us laughing all night.” “Those brothers are pretty interesting fellows and they kept the crowd engaged,” adds David. After dinner, the newlyweds danced to “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young, part of the Canadian repertoire played at the ceremony and reception. Guests were free to hit the dance floor, gather around three bonfires under the stars, or pick up one of the available musical instruments for a jam session. The party rocked on until 3 a.m., with a few hearty souls still up to watch the sunrise from the dock. During the reception, the newlyweds shared some quiet time together when the photographer suggested a short trip to a small island for pictures. “We could see the tiny island from the camp,” says Liza. “We stood on its rock point surrounded by water. It was our only moment alone and just a beautiful setting.” Sunday morning featured a delicious camp brunch of fruit, yogurt, pancakes, eggs, sausages and breads. Many guests took advantage of the warm weather to go for a refreshing swim before boarding boats for the trip back to the mainland parking lot. hiking and a drive around the Cabot Trail came next for the newlyweds. A full-fledged honeymoon to Italy is scheduled for Easter 2020. Liza and David hope to eventually make Haliburton their full-time home. “We are really looking forward to that day,” says Liza.

or their wedding, Priscilla Castro and Andrew Hutchinson wanted to have an intimate and beautiful celebration with their closest friends and family members. After their engagement, the eager couple wanted to be married as soon as possible.
Accordingly, the bride and groom-to-be decided their wedding day would be June 2, 2019, a date that let them celebrate in warm weather just four weeks after becoming engaged. “It was a surprise wedding,” says Priscilla. “It was a surprise for my parents, and the venue

was a surprise for my fiancé. We had picked the date, but it was too short a period of time for him to come and see the venue. He trusted me to chose it.” Happily, their plans fell into place. The couple’s wedding day turned out to be everything they had hoped for and more. Priscilla, who came to Canada from her native Mexico in 2016, met Andrew virtually when he sent her an online direct message via Instagram on December 2, 2017. After talking and getting to know each other over the next week, the couple met on December 10 for their first date. Andrew took his future bride to Noble Sushi restaurant in Barrie. “The attraction was instant,” says Priscilla. “We both felt it right away. I thought he was the nicest person.” On May 4, 2019, Priscilla returned from a visit with family and friends in Mexico. Andrew met her at Toronto International Airport with a very special way to welcome her home. “Andrew proposed to me in the airport,” recalls Priscilla. “He told me he wanted me here with him forever. He actually got down on one knee. We chose a Sunday for our wedding date so that everyone we loved could come and celebrate with us.” The Living Water Resort & Spa, a gorgeous venue set on the shores Georgian Bay and framed by the Blue Mountains in Collingwood, was chosen as the site for their wedding

ceremony and reception. The Resort is also known for its wedding catering and comfortable accommodation for guests. The weather cooperated fully for Priscilla and Andrew’s outdoor wedding ceremony. In the sunshine, rows of chairs for their 26 guests were set up in front of the ceremony site, a white wooden trellis arch decorated with ribbons and white flowers. The aqua-coloured waters of the Bay, lawns and landscaped gardens created a lovely backdrop for the celebration. “We were celebrating and overall the wedding was amazing,” says Priscilla. “Everyone was happy and I was super happy. My cheeks were hurting by the end of the night because I was always smiling.” The bride, carrying a delicate bouquet of pale pink roses, walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon before joining her groom in front of the officiant. She wore a strapless sweetheart gown with lace bodice and full tulle skirt, paired with a simple floral hairpiece. The groom looked sharp in a charcoal suit with a patterned vest, black tie and green shirt. Both bride and groom sported runners in appropriate colours as footwear. groom had photos taken by while their guests enjoyed a cocktail hour. Later, guests gathered inside the Resort for a delicious dinner catered by the Living Water Resort. A special vegan meal for the bride, who recommends a vegan diet for everyone, included a chickpea salad with quinoa and a vegan chocolate pudding. A peanut butterflavoured wedding cake with was also made with vegan ingredients to allow the bride to indulge in a sweet moment with her new husband. There were also some sweet moments in the speeches given during the dinner. “My mother-in-law did a short speech in
Spanish because of my Mexican background,” says Priscilla. “My brother came up from Mexico for our wedding and did an amazing speech. It was dedicated to me and my guests were all crying. My brother and I are very close.” After dinner, the newlyweds had their first dance together before the bride took a turn around the floor with her father. Then the guests took to the floor to dance the night away to the bride’s playlist that included hip hop music by Nujabes.
