Gò0dNews from the Pastor’s Desk Thanksgiving and Grace: An Intimate Connection hanksgiving, for Americans, is a holiday that is quite important and immersed in family traditions. But the New Testament paints the practice of giving thanks as more important than something for one day set aside in the calendar. There’s a deep Scriptural connection between thankfulness and grace. While it’s obvious that we should be thankful for God’s grace, what’s not so obvious in English is how closely the two are related: “…the service of this ministry is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but also is overflowing through many expressions of thanksgiving (eucharistia) to God. Through the proven character of this service they will glorify God because of the submission of your confession to the gospel of Christ and the generosity of your participation toward them and toward everyone, and they are longing for you in their prayers for you, because of the surpassing grace (charis) of God to you. Thanks (charis) be to God for his indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:12-15). We typically translate the Greek word charis as “grace.” We usually define that as “unmerited favor.” But it can also indicate what grace causes: joy, favor, gratification, acceptance, benefits, thanks, and gratitude. Its etymological relatives eucharistos, eucharisteo, and eucharistia are the words for thanks, thankfulness, and thanksgiving. As I read through the Bible verses where charis appears, a pattern emerges in the translations. If charis is shown by God to us, we call it grace (e.g. John 1:6-17). If charis is shown by us toward God, we call it thanks (e.g. 1 Corinthians 15:57). If charis is shown between us, it’s a favor or credit (Luke 6:32-34; Acts 24:27), thanks (Luke 17:9), or occasionally a chance to minister grace (Ephesians 4:29). Receiving the grace of God should make us respond with something so similar, so closely connected, it can be called by the same word, charis. More commonly, though, “thanks” is translated from a word made by combining “eu” and “charis.” The word eu means “good” or “well.” Literally, the combined word means “well-favored,” though we usually take the implied meaning to be “grateful” or “thankful” (eucharistos). This intimate connection between the two—between grace and thankfulness—means that, for those who follow

Jesus, thankfulness in all its forms is intimately connected to the grace we have known from God: “For all things are for your sakes, that the grace (charis), being multiplied through the many, may cause the thanksgiving (eucharistia) to abound to the glory of God” (2 Corinthians 4:15). Thankfulness is what happens when we are well supplied with grace. It should be our natural reaction to being blessed and highly favored by God, which all of us are if we have a relationship with God. “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks (eucharisteo), for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Note that this verse says to give thanks in everything, not necessarily for
everything. There will be things in our lives that we don’t feel thankful for. But even in those times, we should still maintain an attitude of thankfulness because of the grace God constantly shows us. We have all been “well-favored” by God and supplied with abundant grace. We should overflow with thanks as a natural response, both to what God is doing for us and on behalf of all other people. Thanksgiving should be a way of life for all of us—not simply one day on the calendar. And while giving thanks is something we need to do, it should also be something that we want to do all the time because we know the generosity of God’s grace. About The Author

Don’t Be Idle MONEY MATTERS

n one of my favorite novels, As I Lay Dying (1930) by my favorite novelist William Faulkner, an old man named Anse Bundren justifies his laziness by reasoning that once he gets to Heaven, riches and wealth “will be taken from them that have and give[n] to them that have not.” But what does Jesus say in Matthew 25:29? “For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” Anse Bundren actually seems to have it backward, biblically speaking. Yet old Anse and those like him often attribute their poverty to “bad luck.” But as Benjamin Franklin famously wrote in Poor Richard’s Almanac, “Diligence is the mother of good luck.” The harder we work, the “luckier” we get! When I was a kid growing up in the 1970’s, I cannot recall seeing anyone holding a sign on a corner begging money. Rather, I remember a blind man who stood regularly outside the Post Office downtown with a cup of pencils he was selling to make money. This man was obviously and permanently disabled. Today, on countless street corners and interstate on-ramps, there are young, apparently able-bodied men and women holding cardboard signs expecting to be handed money (and this was true for many years before our current pandemic). As Christians, we are instructed to help the poor, the widow, and the orphan—no question about it. But I also believe God wants us to use sound judgment (discernment) and not simply hand over our money indiscriminately to anyone who is panhandling or holding a sign on a corner. Robert D. Lupton has an eye-opening book entitled Toxic Charity: How the Church Hurts Those They Help and How to Reverse It. Lupton has worked for many years with numerous charitable and

missions-minded organizations, and one of the author’s observations is that “giving to those in need what they could be gaining from their own initiative may well be the kindest way to destroy people.” There is a considerable difference between giving to help people during an immediate crisis (disaster relief, for instance) and regularly giving to the same people who chronically solicit donations. This latter dynamic might actually be “enabling” destructive behaviors such as idleness or substance abuse. In 2 Thessalonians 3:6-7, Paul goes one step further: “Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you.” Surrounding ourselves with idle people may end up infecting us with the same apathy, hopelessness, and sloth. At the very least, we might normalize and legitimize idleness (notice how this sounds nicer than “laziness”). After all, one must wonder why we’ve had a proliferation of aggressive panhandling in cities and towns across America (sometimes turning violent), as well as the ubiquitous people holding cardboard signs at countless intersections. For those reading my column in this magazine, odds are you currently have a job and are working diligently in pursuit of your goals—paying bills, trying to save something for a rainy day, and investing for your retirement. On the other hand, many have become unemployed during this pandemic, and there’s a chance that more may join the jobless ranks unless the pandemic ends in the near future. Let’s encourage those less fortunate, offer godly counsel, and a “hand up” in addition to the occasional “handout.”

Be A Peacemaker, Not A Peacekeeper

Today I Saw God

s we approach this season of Thanksgiving hoping to find our tables filled with desserts, I want to share a little story with you as a
reminder that God is working ALL things for your good just as He promises in Romans 8:28. I pray we are reminded to fill our homes with the sweet aroma of gratitude no matter what our situations and circumstances look like. A few weeks ago, I was having one of those days where I needed a little pick me up. Jeremy lost his job during this COVID-19 situation, and although it seems to be a terrible thing and it has been a challenging, we understand God has a greater purpose in this moment for our family, our marriage, and our ministries. We know God is more than able to provide abundantly above all we need, but there are days where we are human, and our faith seems to fall short compared to that of the biblical characters we admire. This particular day was one of those days for me. Yet, I remained steadfast in prayer. Ever so carelessly, a mere thought passed from my mind to my lips and I whispered, “Jesus, I would really like some chocolate”. I thought nothing else of my prayer nor my additional small whisper afterwards. The next day I received a call from an unexpected guest, saying she had some gifts to bring us. When she arrived, I sent Kainen outside to pick up the box she brought. It was filled with lots of blessings, and you guessed it, among those gifts were chocolate bars. Not just one kind of chocolate but a variety of chocolate bars, filled with delicious goodness of all sorts, like
glory. And sometimes He even supplies our wants. Today, I saw God in the gift of a candy bar! Where did you see Him? “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

I’m Trusting You, Lord!

e all have favorite verses in the Bible, and one of mine is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord
with all your heart; and lean not unto your own
understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” In the King James Version of the Bible, trust is mentioned 134 times! What does it mean to trust? It is basically to have confidence, to believe in the steadfastness of our Lord. If we really trust the Lord, we should not find it difficult to surrender to Him. I get the picture in my mind of something my children did when they were young. Have

You see, living the Christian life is fairly easy if everything is going our way, but if we add a little stress, a little hardship, a little despair, we quickly find ourselves at a fork in the road. Are we going to rest and trust the Lord, or are we going to go our own way? We must accept that God’s promises are true even when He seems to be so far away. We need to recognize, concede, confess, and acknowledge who Jesus really is to us. We need to acknowledge His presence, His power, His purpose, and
you ever seen a young child jump into their father’s or grandfather’s arms? Yes, my children would do that. They would go up a few steps and yell, “Dad (or Pop), catch me!” There would be such joy on their faces. They trusted. But over the years, I have heard people say, “I can’t trust God; I can’t trust Jesus. I don’t see them. I need something tangible.” That is when I would tell them this: You trust that the alarm clock is going to wake you up for work. You trust that the mechanic properly fixed your brakes on the car when you take it out of the shop. You trust that the workers at your favorite fast-food chain washed their hands after their last bathroom break. What about those of you who have been sick recently? You trusted the doctor whose name you could not pronounce. Yes, you saw degrees on the wall, but you never actually checked them out. That doctor wrote you a prescription you couldn’t read. Then you took it to a pharmacist you have never met and she or he gave you a chemical compound, and you went home and took those pills according to the instructions on the bottle. All of this encompasses TRUST.
In a world of distrust, whom can we trust?
His promises at all times. Most of the time, we don’t want to give up control concerning our spiritual lives. We fight the Lord, but we are the fools, for He has the best in mind for us. But we need to simply place our faith exclusively in Christ Jesus and what He has done for us at the Cross, which then gives the Holy Spirit room to work in our lives (Romans 8:1-2, 11). Well, are you going to trust Him, or are you going to go it alone? Choose wisely!
always trust—He is the Lord, Jesus Christ. We do not put trust in ourselves, our abilities, our education, or our money; the only one worth trusting is the Lord.

Does such a thing exist? Sure it does. The answer is laughter! Here’s one example: A young lady was traveling on a long train trip when she noticed a man seated across from
her. He was well dressed, elderly, and quite dignified, and yet he was giggling to himself—all by himself. No one was around him. This giggling, knee-slapping, chuckling, and grinning went on for the duration of the train trip. In fact, at one point, he held his belly and wailed with laughter. Her curiosity got the best of her as they disembarked the train. “Sir, forgive my boldness. I just have to ask. What were you doing that was so funny?”

“Oh,” he replied, “when I am bored, I tell myself jokes.” “I see,” she mused. “Well, what about that one time when you were holding your belly and laughing out loud? You were nearly in tears!” “That was one I hadn’t heard before!” he revealed. In John 16:33, Jesus commanded that we be of good cheer. He knew that worry, irritation, stress, and disease could and would take a toll on our bodies. He also knew that laughter brings on rejuvenating properties and renews the mind with a healthy outlook. Scripture and science support one another, especially when it comes to laughter and the body. Besides the obvious feelings of contentment and wellbeing, laughter creates several other positive changes to the body: • Increased levels of oxygen. • Increased levels of disease-fighting immune cells. • Increased levels of pain-reducing chemicals. • Increased benefits to organs such as the lungs, liver, pancreas, spleen, stomach, intestines, and brain. The Bible’s own Book of Proverbs offers several Scriptures that support the connection between joy, laughter, and health. • Proverbs 15:13: “A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.” • Proverbs 15:15: “For the despondent, every day brings trouble; for the happy heart, life is a continual feast. • Proverbs 17:22: “A merry heart does good like medicine.” Do you practice humor? Remember piano lessons? Or martial arts? Or basketball lay-ups? Repetition of the basics in practice leads to finesse and precision in the real event. Laughter is a basic of life. Repeating the process of laughter leads to finesse in handling stress and precision in gaining perspective. Go ahead: laugh out loud!
