Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.” Sackcloth is a sign of grief, self-humiliation, and submission in the Bible, and I believe that it is time for us to cry out on behalf of other people, communities, and nations. The next step we learned about prayer during COVID-19 is to reflect on our lives. Exodus 23:24-25 says, “You shall not bow down to their

Pinnacle: those are good as well. The point to all this story is that Adam works at finding them. He kicks the leaves and sticks looking for that one that the other player just would pass over or not take the time to search for. Golf balls are the cheapest thing in your bag, so why make the time? It’s just how the Lord searches for us: those who are lost and dirty from the field of play. Seasons
“M
by Amy Eaton
om, I joined the Army.” [I pause and take a deep breath, whispering to my heart, Remember, mama, seasons are good.] When my son joined the Army, I was a mix of emotions. Those words carried a lot of weight, and this mama knew it well. You see, I’m a military wife. My husband has served in the US Armed Forces for over 22 years and still counting. We’ve been married for over half of that, and I know up close the sacrifice he has given to his calling. Goodness, those words mean so much more than “I joined.” Suddenly, I pictured my son small and silly again. This boy…my little boy had just made a brave and courageous decision, and basic combat training was around the corner. We were about to enter a whole new season of life on many fronts. But I truly mean that seasons are good, and there’s good in every season: yes, even this season. Good is still found in the difficult seasons, and one thing that remains is God is faithful. Scripture seems to come most alive to me when I’m in the boat surrounded by an unrelenting storm and it feels like Jesus is taking a nap (Mark 4:35-42.) In these moments, I cling to promises like Philippians 4:13, Joshua 1:9, Jeremiah 29:11, and Genesis 50:20. No matter how difficult the season ahead feels, I know God is faithful. Seasons are also special. At the first hint of red on my favorite dogwood tree, I know that autumn is around the corner. All that’s lively and green seasonally will soon release the fruit of this season and prepare to enter into the next. Fall is coming, and with it comes gifts as well. No matter how much
14 // October 2020
I love the flowers and fruit of the prior season, I cannot force to be something that is no longer there. Parenting is not without seasons of its own. Just as your child cannot remain an infant indefinitely, when adulthood is knocking at the door and their thirst for freedom is unquenchable, your voice in their life will shift. You no longer get to control the what, when, and where of their lives. In fact, you no
longer have control. In essence, your role is shifting to become a coach. And your coaching voice is still critically important and influential, so “stay in the game,” but don’t try to force them into a season they are no longer in. Embrace this transition; you’ve been training them their whole lives for it! Mamas, if you are about to enter the season that is affectionately known as the empty nest, I want to encourage you that there is so much beauty ahead. Yes, you are going to miss the younger years with a noisy home, but the days ahead can be full of life, fun, and great joy if you trust the Lord and let Him lead. Embrace the seasons; there are gifts in every single one.

Mistaken Identity istaken identity. It’s what your enemy keeps trying his best to hit you with. He wants you to believe you are your experiences, heartaches, and even your sins. Satan desires that you would be so lost in your pain, addictions, and insecurities that you never know who or who’s you are. The enemy wants your walk with God to be filled with shame and condemnation over the things that you have done. God, however, does not. My great grandmother is alive but isn’t always here, she has Alzheimer’s. Lots of moments have occurred where she did not recognize me and one scary time where she didn’t know who she was. 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” This scripture gives us a crumb of who God says we are you need to know more. It is vital for your Christian walk that you realize that God never forgets who you are and he will never forget who he is. You do, however, have an enemy who wants you to believe that because he is invisible he is also

fictional but that’s not true. He is real. And what you need in your life is the armor that can shut him down! What is your current battle? Do you feel hopeless? Most of the time the conduit of hopelessness is insecurity. Ephesians 6:10-18 tells us that we have the power to defeat insecurity. He has given you: A belt to fortify you, a breastplate to protect you, the Gospel shoes to stabilize you, a helmet to guard you, a sword to fight for you, and something we tend to miss, prayer to connect you to Him. Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are they works; and that my soul knows right well.” When insecure, we are saying somehow God made a mistake. God can turn your grave into a garden. Resist Satan and he will flee. Numbers 23:19-20, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” His word is true. Stand and claim it!

more kindness in this crazy world of unrest we’re living in right now? My husband’s grandmother, Granny Karnes, always said, “It’s easy to be mean.” She was right! As a teacher of 8- and 9-year-old children in the public school system for 32 years, my observation was that it sure did seem to come quite naturally for my students to choose to be mean to their friends instead of treating them with kindness. What? It’s a choice? My observation made me decide to begin our day by reciting the Golden Rule. “Treat others the way you want to be treated” was our daily quote that we recited. Gò0dNews for Marriage
Marriage Pathways ife has many pathways that are created from birth to our present-day living. There are unique individual characteristics that make up each of our pathway descriptions. Your pathway description would be a chronological recording of all experiences and events that have occurred in your life. The description that you would share communicates to others exactly what has shaped you into who you are today. It’s the reason you react to circumstances in the manner you do. It’s your personal history. Good, bad, or indifferent, you have ownership of it, whether you’re able to accept it or not. For anyone contemplating marriage, knowing the personal history of your future spouse is very important. Let’s add age into the equation and how it affects our marriage pathways. A young individual’s personal history is much shorter than an older individual’s history. That still does not minimize the importance of sharing your personal history with your future spouse. Understanding your spouse’s personal history before you enter into your marriage relationship will help to eliminate many times of frustration and misunderstandings after you’ve exchanged those marriage vows. Questions should be asked courteously, and responses truthfully given, so you will know each other as well as possible when married. An older individual’s personal history is much more complicated, so many more questions and responses will be required to know each other prior to marriage. Marriage is difficult enough without adding to the stress from the result of poor communication habits formed prior to marriage. Why should I write an article such as this? Why are you reading this article? Things happen in our lives unexpectedly and also as a result of our poor behavior. If marriages can be saved or made easier from the provoking of your thought, consideration, and understanding of these words, then I have been successful in making a difference in your life and marriage. Please be encouraged to use your courtship time wisely. It certainly will be a blessing after marriage when you suddenly learn something new about your spouse. You just might be a little more understanding. If these thoughts and words are given considerable consideration and God is placed into the center of your relationship, then your new marriage should be successful. Deaths of spouses do occur, and so do divorces. These are facts of life. We all make mistakes. God has provided forgiveness for our mistakes. Ask for it and allow God’s healing to begin

in your life before your next marriage. Oh my, the pain and suffering that you will avoid certainly will be a blessing to your new marriage. To know and understand the pathway that your future spouse has walked will ease your struggles within your marriage relationship. It will certainly minimize the number of conflicts or troubled times in your new marriage. Own your personal history. Be responsible for it. Resolve the issues that need to be resolved. It’s so much more pleasant to share that kind of history with your future spouse. Blessings as you use your courtship time wisely. Blessings as you work diligently at knowing your future spouse well. Blessings as you place God into the center of your relationship now and after you’ve exchanged marriage vows. Blessings as you keep your courtship alive and healthy, both now and throughout your entire marriage. You will find happiness and understanding within your new marriage. About The Author

me! OMGoodness! Did you know that worry can rob us of worshipful moments with God? In fact, even Jesus Himself addressed this by saying, “Don’t worry.” It would be easy to think, “That’s easy for Him to say—He’s the Son of God.” That is the very reason He can say this. Let’s look into Matthew 6, beginning with verse 25, to pick up where Jesus is addressing the issue of worry. “Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying?” Here’s what is interesting: in verse 25-34, there are six references to the state of worry or worrying. Since the subject of “worry” is mentioned this many times in these few verses, it becomes apparent there is

Would You Share The Cure? by Charles Brian Conn
I
t seems like a difficult time for a lot of people, a time when good news can seem few and far between. And whereas our best news, the Good News, is ever present,
no matter our circumstances, I’d like to spread some other good news related to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might wonder, what could possibly be good about that? We don’t have a vaccine yet, and it has caused so much harm! But this good news isn’t really new; it’s just that many people don’t know about it. I think if they did, they’d take action. Here it is: People who have recovered from COVID-19, even ones who didn’t have symptoms, are effectively carrying the cure around in their blood and, if they shared it, could save the lives of people who are in dire straits. Call me reckless for oversimplifying it in that way, but people are dying right now, so I’ll risk that to get your attention. Plus, if I started by saying, “Donate convalescent plasma,” I’d say people are less likely to read it. It sounds too medical, like something that doesn’t concern normal people like us. If I’m not a health care professional, why am I the one telling you this? Well, I had COVID-19 after a trip in March, along with Kelly, my wife. Neither of us was in bad condition, so we couldn’t get tested back then. Three weeks later, we had positive antibody tests. about convalescent plasma, saying it was being used to help save people’s lives, Blood Assurance was collecting it locally, and they badly needed donors. So I called them. They told me they were running out of it every day. I told them I wanted to donate, and they said I couldn’t because of my heart (another story), but my wife might be able to. My wife made her first donation here in Cleveland on Friday, July 3. She told me I could tell you. She already received a letter from Blood Assurance thanking her and requesting that she ask those she was in close contact with to consider donating. But I read the paper. I know there are people out there in Cleveland who have it, already recovered from it, or think they may have had it. So that’s why I’m telling you.
32 // October 2020
And now Mayor Brooks has confirmed the value of convalescent plasma after his ordeal, encouraging people who can to donate. You might have the ability to help someone recover, and you don’t even know it. But if you have reason to believe you had it and have recovered, Blood Assurance will test to see if you were exposed. It may seem odd to think of a positive test result as good news, but if you are willing to donate, that positive antibody result would be doubly good news—not only are you confirmed “recovered,” but you may be eligible to save some lives. Him three times (Luke 22:61). Think about the grief Jesus must have felt when He looked down from the cross and saw His mother so distraught. Can you hear the gentleness and deep mourning as He gives His sonship to John: “Dear woman, look, here is your son” (John 19:26)? Even in the very worst of pain, Jesus turned to God, His Father, and asked for a different cup and then later asked from the cross, “Why have You forsaken Me?” Each journey of mourning is personal. In searching Scripture to see how Jesus mourned, the key is found in the picture of Jesus being in the midst of the horrible loneliness and pain, never denying His grief, yet turning to God in honesty and yielding to His Father.

For the most part, we all keep our emotions in check. However, there are days when out of nowhere, tears and sadness flood our souls. These are the days when we can’t seem to get out of our own head and away from tormenting thoughts that pour in like a torrential rain. Emotionally rainy days are absolutely no fun. are exempt from suffering. Our lives aren’t always a bed of roses. We do face tribulation. Those who do not know Jesus need to see that Christians are not perfect. We fail. We make mistakes. We sin. The difference is this: we serve a perfect Savior. He loves us unconditionally. He forgives. He picks us up, dusts us off, and sets us on the right path. God not only forgives us, but He also comforts us in our suffering so that we may comfort others

Wickedness reigns. The Church has been largely quiet or has come into alliances with the world. God is speaking. Do our ears hear? I like to use the phrase, “What does God say?” If we will approach Him with repentant hearts and open ears, He will speak to us. And then, whatever He says to say and do, we must say and do it. And HE will heal our land. It all starts with us, with those who claim His Name, who call themselves “Christian.” So in the ears of the “lost,” what voice do they hear? Gò0dNews Business Spotlight Polk County’s Corn Maze, (The River Maze) Opening For It’s 16th Season
R
esidents of Southeast Tennessee will be able to “escape to the farm” when this region’s creative corn maze returns to Birchland Ocoee Farms for its 16th season on September 26. Featuring a new design each year, this fall’s 10acre maze is an attempt to inspire hope to all who are brave enough to navigate it. The theme is “America, the Beautiful”. It features 10 rivers in the United States as part of the paths, but other beautiful scenes across America will be depicted. Trivia about America is incorporated in the signage and will challenge those who go through the maze. The Liberty Bell is also part of the design, so visitors can “Let Freedom Ring”. “For the second year we wanted to let our region know that we support “Trek Thru Truth,” said Joe Fetzer, owner and manager of The River Maze. “We think it’s exciting that an interactive children’s discovery museum is going to be nearby to us in Cleveland. That is why we put “TREK THRU TRUTH” in our soybean maze design. We also want others to share in the awe and beauty of our historic farm.” Here at The River Maze, we cannot wait to welcome you back for our 16th season and are committed to the health and safety of our employees and guests as we celebrate this momentous occasion. In accordance with CDC, state and local guidelines, we'll be implementing a number of Covid-related safety precautions and invite you to join us in
working together to PLAY SAFE this fall in our 20+ acres of outdoor open air. The River Maze will modify some attractions and delete others in response to the Covid Pandemic. We have installed

some new games. They are Steer Roping, Soccer Practice and Four Square in the Air. We are in the process of adding 2 new 150 ft Kiddie Zip lines and improving our barnyard animals. We added two additional kiddie slides located in an old grain bin last year. We will modify our hayrides and cow train rides. We are sorry that we will be deleting the Jump Pad (wasn’t if fun?), the corn box and corn ball, due to Covid concerns. Our biggest addition this year are our sunflower fields. John Keats said,” A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” Our sunflowers will be beautiful and provide many photo-ops. Photographers may request our professional photography policy for these and other photo ops at the farm. Our Concession and Bakery will once again provide lots of great food. And Yes, our home-grown Pumpkins will be found in our pumpkin patch. The scenic beauty and many other attractions will be a rewarding experience for anyone coming to the River Maze! The RIVER MAZE will give visitors the chance to “get lost” every Friday, Saturday and Sunday thru November 1. Hours are Friday 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. make reservations, call 423.650.0710 or visit www.TheRiverMaze.com.

Homemade Bread by Bekah Prytherch
I
was baking homemade bread tonight and as I started kneading the dough I began thinking about how I still had to let it rise for an hour before I could even bake it... (this is how impatient I am) and that’s why I never make homemade bread, it’s so much easier to just buy it at the store and be done! As I was almost done, a verse came to mind in the Bible. John 6:35, “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.“ This verse made me think how sometimes in life I/we want the fast bread of life... Quick prayers, fast Bible study, not setting aside the time I should with Him! Instead of taking the hardy, warm yummier bread... praying with out ceasing, studying his word, worshiping him in all we do, being the his hands and feet, feasting on him everyday! We want quick, when he is there offering us to have a feast...all of Him! His word says he is our bead of life and that we will never go hungry, we have the choice everyday, hour, minutes to always feast on his word yet we settle for a fast snack.
Ingredients • Warm water: (105-115 degrees)- to activate the yeast. • Active Dry yeast: Instant or rapid rise yeast can be substituted. • Granulated sugar or honey: the sugar is used to “feed” the yeast and tenderize the bread. • Salt: to enhance flavor • Oil: Vegetable or canola oil, or melted butter could be substituted • Flour: Bread Flour or All-Purpose Flour can both be used with no changes to the recipe. The exact amount of flour used will vary depending on different factors (altitude/ humidity etc.). What matters is the texture of the dough. It should be smooth and pull away from the sides of the bowl. It’s important not to add too much flour or your bread will be dense. The dough should be just slightly sticky when touched with a clean finger.
50 // October 2020
Instructions
1. Proof the yeast: In a large bowl or stand mixer add the yeast, water and a pinch of the sugar or honey. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes until foaming and bubbly. (This is called “proofing” the yeast, to make sure it is active. If it doesn’t foam, the yeast is no good, and you need to start over with fresh yeast). 2. Prepare the dough: Add remaining sugar or honey, salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour. Mix to combine. Add another cup of flour and mix to combine. With the mixer running add more flour, ½ cup at a time, until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. 3. Knead the dough: Mix the dough for 5 minutes on medium speed (or knead with your hands on a lightly floured surface, for 5-8 minutes). The dough should be smooth and elastic, and slightly stick to a clean finger, but not be overly sticky. 4. First Rise: Grease a large bowl with oil or cooking spray and place the dough inside. Cover with a dish towel or plastic wrap and allow to rise in a warm place* until doubled in size (about 1 1/2 hours). 5. Punch the dough down really well to remove air bubbles. 6. Divide into two equal portions. Shape each ball into long logs and place into greased loaf pans. 7. Second rise: Spray two pieces of plastic wrap with cooking spray and lay them gently over the pans. Allow dough to rise again for about 45 minutes to one hour, or until risen 1 inch above the loaf pans. 8. Bake: Adjust oven racks to lower/middle position. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Bake bread for about 30-33 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Give the top of a loaf a gentle tap; it should sound hollow.

our churches many years ago it was titled: “No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus.” The writer of that song spent most of his life as an itinerant evangelist and gospel songwriter. The composer says that after returning home from an evangelistic crusade he found a note left by his wife of many years. The note said she had enough of the evangelistic life and she left him. The composer said that he became very despondent during the next several years. There were even times when he contemplated suicide. Yes, there was the terrible despair he experienced because he believed that no one really cared for him any more. But he said that gradually his spiritual faith was restored and he once again became active in Christian ministry. Soon he felt compelled to write a song that became a summary of his past tragic experience. From his broken heart came the words to the hymn: No on ever cared for me like Jesus. There’s no other friend so kind and true. No one else could take the sin and darkness from me.

Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice

of it that brings about a spirit of fear? Is there a step of faith
Obedience to God is heavy, but it is also freeing. This word in Hebrew is “shama,” and it carries with it the meaning of hearing and obeying. Most of the time, Hebrew words have numerous meanings, but not obedience. God used it the same way all throughout Scripture. He meant for it to carry the meaning of listening to His voice and acting on what He said. When God calls you out of your comfort zone into the deep, it takes faith. “God has allotted to each a measure of faith” (Romans 12:3b). Jesus said, “…if you have faith like a mustard seed” (Matthew 17:20). It is our faith in God that
