Chocolate Zucchini Cake

ebster defines harvest as “the time of year when matured grain, fruit, vegetables, etc. are reaped and gathered in.” My parents always had a
garden, and harvest time meant getting to eat an abundance of zucchini, tomatoes, corn, and whatever else happened to be planted that year. It also was a time of canning, freezing, and preserving the fruits and vegetables so that they could be eaten during the cold winter months while the garden lay dormant. Yet, harvest can be applied to other things. Galatians 6:9
applies it to good works: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (NIV). 1 Corinthians 9:6 applies it to finances: “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (NKJV). Jesus applied it to the spiritual salvation of the world: “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field” (Mt. 9:37-38 NIV). As autumn harvest comes to a close and gardens are tilled under for the winter, harvesting can still continue. What will you harvest today?
Ingredients
• ½ c. oil • 1½ c. honey • 3 eggs • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • ½ tsp. orange flavor, or 2 tsp. grated orange peel • 2 c. peeled and grated zucchini • 3 c. freshly ground soft white wheat flour, or 2-2/3 c. all-purpose flour • ½ c. unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 Tbsp. baking powder • ½ tsp. baking soda • 1 tsp. salt • 1 tsp. cinnamon • ¼ c. milk • 1 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease and flour a bundt pan. 2. In a large bowl, mix together the oil and honey with an electric mixer. Add eggs, beating after each addition. Add vanilla, orange flavor, and zucchini. 3. In a small bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. 4. Add the flour mixture to the honey mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix on low until thoroughly combined. Add nuts, if desired. 5. Bake for 55-60 minutes. Let it cool for 15 minutes before removing it from the pan. 6. After inverting it on a plate, drizzle the chocolate glaze over the top.
Chocolate Glaze
• 2/3 c. honey • 3 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder • 1/3 c. milk • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 5 drops (1/16 tsp.) orange flavor
In a small saucepan, combine honey, cocoa powder, and milk. Cook over medium heat and boil until it reaches 230°F (using a candy thermometer). Remove from heat. Add the butter, vanilla, and orange flavor. If it becomes too thick as it cools, add a little milk to thin it.

Spiritual Entrepreneur: 100 Days of Encouragement word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver” (Proverbs 25:11). The world needs more entrepreneurs, more good ideas, and more courageous people who see a need and will do something about it. The world especially needs more Christian “spiritual” entrepreneurs who recognize the opportunities God is revealing to them and are then courageous enough to act on it. On August 14, 2019, I read in Richard Foster’s book “Celebration of Discipline,” “The fruit of solitude is increased sensitivity and compassion for others.” Over the next several days, I reflected on this thought and prayed, “What can I do to make the world a better place and have more compassion for others?” God brought to my mind the image of an older gentleman I would see often at coffee shops around town. It appeared to me that this man was always meeting with collegeaged students. I saw him so often, I started asking others if they knew who he was. It turns out he is a retired minister who meets with young adults to mentor them. Wow—someone willing to give up their time and energy for the betterment of others to speak encouragement into their lives! Six days later, God’s prompting came: “I want you to write letters of encouragement—for 100 days.” Yikes! What would people think? I feared people’s thinking I was a weirdo or that I wanted something from them. I also thought, why should I write these letters? I need encouragement. I’m going through a tough spot in life; I’m out of work! Nevertheless, I submitted and started writing to family, friends, acquaintances, strangers, celebrities, heroes, cultural villains, and the older gentleman from the coffee shops. Each day, I would pray, “God, who needs encouragement today? Who do you want me to write to?” Each day, He would bring someone to mind for me to write to, sometimes people I absolutely did not want to write to.

But what I discovered as I wrote these letters was that I was being encouraged. I was focusing less on myself and my own problems and more on others and how I could speak into their lives. Gratitude was changing my attitude. Over the 100 days, I received responses like, “I really needed to hear those words because I was in a very dark place.” I had people approach me in tears, saying, “I’ve
never received anything like that before, and you don’t know how perfect the timing of this was.” Others said, “You believe in me more than I believe in myself.” Maybe there’s someone you know who needs to know that you admire them, look up to them, believe in them. During this time of quarantine, maybe now is the time to write and tell them? We all need encouragement. “I shall pass this way but once; any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” –Etienne de Grellet (Quaker missionary)

Joab plunged a spear through Absalom’s heart. Ehud assassinated Eglon. Saul persecuted Christians. David had Uriah moved to the front lines, where he was killed. 22 // September 2020
Evil has been prevalent in this world since the fall of Adam, so what is the answer to such disregard for human life? It begins in the heart of each of us: allowing Jesus to change us from the inside out, treating others the way we want to be treated, and putting the feelings of others before our own. “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12). “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12). Each of us just wants to feel loved, understood, and respected, right? JESUS is the answer for the hurt this world feels. Let’s all do our part to make this a better place. “Jesus said to him, ‘“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”’” (Matthew 22:37-39).

experience. The movie shared things about our country’s
kids enjoying a movie that I loved when I was their

I
n the front cover of my Bible I have this statement written: “I have great worth apart from my performance, because Christ gave his life for me. Therefore imparted great value
to me. I am deeply loved, fully pleasing, totally forgiven and accepted completely in Christ my Lord.” I wrote that in 1993 and have read it often. Many days, I get up, and to start my day, I will walk out on the porch and, with a good stretching yawn, will say, “Well, this is the day the Lord has made—now try not to mess it up, Douglas!” I then head for the coffeepot. The day starts well, alright, but then as it goes, stuff happens, and by the end of the day, you’re looking in the mirror as you brush your teeth for bed, and the day’s “stuff” all comes back to you: it does for me. We all run the movie back again in our minds. I could have had more patience with the girl at the store. Why was I lazy and did not just push the cart back to the storefront, instead of leaving it there in front of my truck? Well, everyone else does. Mhmm, did that small thing make it okay? Did I have any opportunity to share Christ with anyone? Was there a chance that those whom I was in contact with today could have seen Christ in me, or was it all Doug? I have to do better tomorrow, but that’s when the small voice comes: “You see, you’re no better than anyone else in the Walmart parking lot.” That’s when I have to recite the above once again to myself. I take great comfort in the fact that the apostle Paul had the same days: well, without the shopping cart. Romans 7:15: “For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.” Most of the readers will know the rest of the chapter, and the day’s events that Paul had is with us all in his thoughts. The turning point is that after Paul ran his movie of his day’s events, he concludes in Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are

Larry McDaniel Celebrates 53 Years In Men’s Clothing Industry
A
t the age of 14, Larry McDaniel received his first opportunity in the clothing industry. His uncle Bill Ledford owned Cleveland Men’s Shop on Inman Street. “He hired me May 23, 1967. That is the reason I am in this business today,” McDaniel said. “I have grown up in the industry; I have evolved in this industry.” Raised in Charleston by Hubert and Betty McDaniel, McDaniel credits them with teaching him how to treat people. “I was raised in a Christian home,” he said. He is also proud to have been raised in Charleston and of being a graduate of Charleston High School in 1971. McDaniel attended Cleveland State Community College and then worked for his uncle for three years as a sales clerk. “His mentorship taught me the salesmanship of the business,” he said. In 1970, McDaniel went to work for Daniel Davis at the Village Esquire at the Village Shopping Center. Under Davis, McDaniel went from a sales clerk to a sales manager. “He taught me neatness and organization,” McDaniel said. “I ran the store for him for several years.” In December of 1976, Max R. Carroll approached McDaniel with a business proposition. “He came in and told me, ‘I have a business opportunity for you. How would you like to own your own men’s store?’” McDaniel recalled. “I said, Max, I don’t have the money. In five years, I may have it. Max said we are going to do it now.” In January of 1977, Carroll and McDaniel decided to open the Town Squire. “In life, you have to have people who believe in you and give you an opportunity. I had an uncle, Mr. Davis, and then Max Carroll. He gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. If someone had not opened the door, I would not have had the opportunity so quickly—or maybe never. I’ll be grateful to him for the rest of my life.” McDaniel appreciates the relationships that grew into friendships over the years with customers. “You don’t want to forget the customers who help build your business,” he said. “People who stay with you through the years become friends. It’s not all monetary. You can’t put a price on friends.” McDaniel credits the relationships, customer service, and being appreciative of customers as a few of the

reasons his business has grown. When he first opened Town Squire, the store took as its motto, “We’re the shop that appreciates the customer.” They still follow that philosophy. McDaniel is very involved in the community. He is involved in United Way, Junior Achievement, and serves on the advisory board for Southern Heritage Bank, a division of First Citizen National Bank. He is also a member of the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce, where he has served on the board in past years as well. He has also served as an assistant treasurer with the Bradley Baptist association. In 1996, McDaniel was named Small Business Retailer of the year. He is also a member of the Noonday Rotary Club of Cleveland.
About his heritage, McDaniel said, “I am proud to have been from Charleston. I am proud to be a Bradley Countian and Cleveland resident. We are all from the same team. We all grow together. By the blessings of God, the teachings of my parents, and the mentors in my life, I can look back at 67 years and see what it has meant to me.” Larry also expressed appreciation for the support from his family: his wife, Linda; his daughters and sonsin-law, Tennille and Jonathan, Jobe and Tiffany, and Ben Inscore; and his grandsons, Chandler, Tyler, Trae, Andrew, Cameron, and Aidan. “I’m blessed!”

Slave To Grace: A Timely Story From Long Ago

Am I An Antique? ee, I am doing a new thing!” (Isaiah 43:19). I love antiques. To me, old things have a certain charm about them, filled with history and interest. I personally own a few antiques, but I am really not very knowledgeable about them. I was told once that the criterion for an item’s being considered an antique is that it be 50 years old or older. If that is the case, then I qualify— and some of my belongings are also eligible. Yeah, I love old things. I love the old hymns that have stood the test of time. Many of them still send chills and thrills to my inner spirit when I hear them or sing them.
Although I love old things, I also get excited about new things! I love the newer, contemporary worship and praise music, and I love the thrill that I feel when I hear or sing them too. My car radio is usually attuned to the Message, although my husband occasionally turns it to enLighten, the Southern Gospel music station. He likes old things too! Although I am sometimes slow to accept newer fads, fashions, and trends, I still love the new—new ideas, new ways of doing things, new insights. Yes, I know every new thing a person tries doesn’t always work or endure the test of time. The newest ideas are not necessarily the best ideas, but the fact that people are thinking up new things proves that there are optimistic people who are not

satisfied with the status quo and think things could be better. LPs and 8-tracks may well be considered antiques now, but they were important steps in the chain of events that brought us DVDs! A news story in the recent past told of a church closing its doors for the purpose of getting rid of the aged membership, and later reopening with only the young as members. There are those who believe it’s time for the old to step back and let the young take over. There must be a place for all of us! While the young bring new energy, excitement, and fresh, innovative ways of doing things, the old bring stability, wisdom, and encouragement, and they preserve legacy. My husband, given half a chance, can strike up a conversation with anybody, anywhere! In a conversation once with a man in his 80s, he discovered what church the elderly gentleman attended and commented on the beauty of the new sanctuary just built. The man (I hesitate to call him “old” because of his wonderful mindset!) responded with excitement and pride and said, “You know, we had an uphill battle with some of the old people, but we persevered and finally got our new building!” You may feel safe living in the “comfort zone” of the past, but I don’t want to be like the person who said, “Wheels—who needs ’em?” or, “Computers—who needs ’em?” (or you fill in the blank!). I want to be an active advocate of the upgrade and update! I want to go broadband, embrace the iPad, and appreciate my GPS (even when it sometimes doesn’t choose the quickest route for me)! Life is too short and too important to live in the past. Bring on the changes! Just be patient with me until I can get in my Scooter and go with you! My body may move a little slower, but my mind and my spirit may very well be yelling for you to catch up!

Fear Not!

e are reminded in Isaiah 41:10 that we are not to fear. This Scripture tells us that He is with us, yet in our present world, we see ourselves
and others around us experiencing fear. What can we do when everything we see and hear wants to evoke fear in our lives? We need to take a closer look at the Scriptures that can help us overcome fear in ourselves and others. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not, for I am with you: Be ye not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous hand.” Our Heavenly Father does not want us to live in fear. He assures us that no matter the circumstance, He is ever present. He wants us to know that in the moments and times when fear tries to grip us, we are not to be consumed by it. He desires for us to realize that He is God, and because of that, we are to cast every fear (care) upon Him. We cannot overcome alone, but we can make it through because of His promises. Knowing that He will help and strengthen us is so encouraging! In Isaiah 43:1-2, the Word tells us, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you: I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.” He reminds us many times not to fear. He felt that this was so important and necessary to tell us because He knew that we would experience stress, worry, and even terror. Our life experiences can be treacherous and unpredictable. We all go through difficult times that are overwhelming. I think David understood this when he stood in front of Goliath that day. He knew that Jehovah God was with him. Others were in terror and fear as
Do not allow fear, worry, and anxiety to taunt you any longer. Refuse to give in, stand up in faith, and trust God to bring you through because He will. Realize that you are His child, and He cares about every detail of your life. Share with others around you how the Lord has helped you trust more in Him. Fear not!

Marriage Sabotage To An End ow many marriages have been destroyed simply because people have not properly resolved issues in their lives, commonly called baggage? What is baggage? How does it affect our marital relationships? If you stop and open your life’s bag and pilfer through it, what would you discover? How full is it? There’s a saying commonly referenced to when discussing marriage: “They’re bringing a lot of baggage into their new marriage.” You haven’t heard this before, have you? Why is this so common? Is it not the fact that issues that caused the previous relationship to fail were not recognized or accepted and resolved? How many people today enter into another relationship shortly after the dissolving of the previous one without resolving the causes of their failure? This common baggage problem does not just involve marriages. It also includes our social relationships. Any unresolved issues in our lives will affect the success of our marriage. They will sooner or later surface and sabotage the present relationship we are developing. Whose desire is it to destroy all relationships? Doesn’t he make it so easy and convenient to open our life’s bag of stuff and dig something out of it and sabotage our relationship with the possibility of permanent injury? Why do we find it so difficult to resolve so many issues from our past? Why do we make it so easy for Satan to use those issues against us, thus continuing our relationship failure cycle? This cycle will continue the rest of our lives if we fail to resolve baggage issues. Baggage, baggage, baggage. It’s no wonder the Bible says it’s so important that we need to lay aside every weight and sin that so easily besets us. Please notice that the Bible does not say that everything we carry with us in life is sin: absolutely the contrary. It becomes needless pain and suffering that we bear in our lives. How many times have you reached into your baggage and retrieved something and sabotaged your relationship? Are we not supposed to take our burdens and unresolved issues to the Lord in prayer and leave them in His care?

Those issues are still unresolved if we pick them up to carry them with us as we leave the altar. Doesn’t that baggage get quite heavy to lug around all the time? If we continue doing the same things all the time, can we not expect the same old results? We need to seek the Lord and allow Him to help us in our unresolved issues. We need to open our hearts to receive God’s healing and lay aside all our unresolved issues which
will eventually sabotage our marriage. Seek the Lord and adopt His changes, and in time, your marital relationship will change for the better. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Peace will return to your marriage. You don’t have to continue to carry your relationship baggage any further. Stop! Resolve it! Forgiveness matters! God intended for our lives to be simple and easy, not burdensome, filled with pain and suffering. Isn’t His yoke easy and His burden light to carry? Don’t allow Satan to trick you into reaching into your bag of stuff for something to sabotage your marriage. Isn’t it worth fighting for to have a healthy marriage? Blessings and peace be unto you as you begin to evaluate all the relationships in your life.

Parks, restaurants, schools, and shops all make great walking destinations and only take about 20 minutes to walk to in that mile radius circle. Walking with children also helps build lasting relationships! Cycling is also a great way to get around. O F F O L L O W I N G O U R FAT H E R . C O M Dan and Mark were born in the small town of Meyersdale, PA. Their parents, Walter and Cathy Witt had 4 children that included an older and a baby sister. Mark and Dan were very close growing up and at early ages, enjoyed time with dad fishing or in the woods on a hunting adventure. During Mark's 1st deer hunt at the age of 12, Dan was 14, their dad was tragically killed in a hunting accident. This event would change and impact each of them forever. In spite of the hunting accident, both Mark and Dan continued to hunt, grow in their love for the outdoors, and sharing their faith in Jesus Christ.

Partners in Crime: Non-Romantic ow could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also” (Acts 5:9). Have you ever been asked by your spouse or asked your spouse, “If I ever commit a crime, would you ‘have my back?” Translation—“Will you snitch on me or help me cover the crime?” Ananias and Sapphira must have asked one another this before committing the crime of withholding
money from the Holy Spirit after selling a piece of their property (see above Bible verse). In a way, they remind me of Bonny and Clyde. They may have loved each other even through a crime of selfish gain. But what happens when one combines this kind of “love” with crime? Consequences for committing a crime may end in picking up trash along highways, being locked behind bars, and others, or even worse, death. Couples do not have to commit a crime physically to be charged but mentally, they can cause their very own life. Although we are to support our spouses by submitting to one another, this does not mean committing a crime with them even if we have knowledge that our spouse committed a crime— “With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but bought the rest and put the rest at

the apostles’ feet” (Acts 5:2). Take note that Sapphira did not withhold money for herself, but that what caused her death was the knowledge of her husband’s crime in which she lied about in Acts 5:8-9. Speaking of lying, “You have not lied just to human beings, but to God” (Acts 5:4). Ouch! There should be a sign with a friendly reminder in our minds that say, “Caution: If God has called someone out to do a mission, know they are protected by the Holy Spirit. God will not allow them to be fooled.” How embarrassing to be seen as the married coupled that lies. But even more embarrassing and ashamed and flirting with death when lying to the Almighty! God knows everything! He knows our thoughts and actions before we commit them… separately or together with someone. Let us not allow Satan to fill our hearts with greed just as he did Annanias heart that it causes us to lie to the Holy Spirit. We are to guard our hearts and if we can, do our best to try to protect our spouse’s heart by encouraging them to do what is right. This could be a possible alleviation of terrible consequences when crimes are committed. We should hold one another accountable for our actions. Consider this: “Two are better than one…If either one of them falls down one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Annanias and Sapphira could not help one another up, because they both had fallen. The conclusion and lesson in Annanias and Saphirra’s story: they both lied to the Holy Spirit in one way or another. And both paid the price and still where left with nothing in the end. About The Author
