Holiday Open House Sunday, 11/10 12 Noon-4 pm

‘Tis the season for recognizing the blessings and graces that fulfill you daily and Be Thankful. Don’t be disappointed if people refuse to help you. Remember the words of Einstein: “I’m thankful to all those who said ‘NO.’ Because of them, I did it myself.”

Anger/Resentment - Anger will eat at you from the inside. Learn how to make peace with those who have wronged you. Keep in mind that he who angers you, controls you. Negative Body Image - There is only one person’s opinion you should be concerned with when it comes to your body, and that is you. If you’re comfortable in your own skin and you are healthy, then that should be the only thing that matters. Idea Of A Perfect Partner - There is no such thing as a perfect partner, so throw your checklist out the window. In life, what prevents us from moving forward is looking at the perfect image of a partner we concoct in our minds. Find the right person for you - one that you can love with all your heart, one you feel comfortable with, and one that accepts you for the person you are. Perfect Life - Just like there is no perfect partner, there is also not a perfect life. Life is what you put into it, so if you are not willing to work hard and put forth effort, you will most likely end up miserable. It is up to you to create the best possible world for yourself. You’re Going To Be Rich - Too many people live their lives with the thought that they will be millionaires. While this can be a realistic goal for some, it is not something that can be achieved without hard work and dedication. Stop letting money be your sole motivator; find a career you are passionate about, and immerse yourself in it completely. The Idea That Good Fortune Will Arrive At Your Doorstep You need to go out into the world and actively look for fulfillment. You cannot take a backseat in life and expect things to happen for you. Appreciate the life you live, and be grateful for what you have. Value each minute of every day. Excuses - Make no time for excuses - You want to work out, but you don’t have the time? Wake up early and get your gym on. Excuses are only rationalizations that make you feel better about yourself for not doing something you want/need to be doing. You desire results? Stop griping, and start doing! Info retrieved online at: http://elitedaily.com/life/20s-things-you-need-to-let-go-to-live-happy-life/

Smart Tips

Family ... Family ... Family ... Family ... Family ... Family

Tips for a Stress-Free Thanksgiving Dinner

• Plan ahead: If you want your holiday meal to run smoothly and keep you from aging ten years over the course of a week, you must plan the event carefully, well in advance! • Organize: Make lists of everything you need to keep organized (ingredients, dishes, kitchen gadgets and accessories, guests, tablescapes, activities). Once you know exactly what you’ll need, round up the items and organize them in a way that makes them accessible. • Keep a general head count: Crowds tend to be ever-changing. Especially around holidays, the reality is that crowds often shift, so it’s up to you to keep an accurate head count as you move forward. Expect changes on your guest list, just always err on the side of too much food rather than too little. • Carefully determine menu: It’s easy to get excited about a holiday meal and go overboard. • Prepare some items in advance: A vital trick when cooking for a crowd is preparing as many items in advance as you can. The more items you can prepare in advance, the easier it will be. • Don’t be afraid to borrow. Just because you’re the host of a holiday dinner doesn’t mean you should have all the pots, pans, dishes, and supplies on hand - borrowing items is perfectly fine. • Eat well, exercise, and sleep well: Everyone has gone into panic mode at some point. In those times, reality seems to go out the window, and you zone in on one particular task. As you’re getting ready for Thanksgiving, try to keep the same schedule. Keep your body in sync, and you’ll keep a level head. • Take a breather: Build some downtime into your Thanksgiving day. Your mind and body work better if they both can take a break, so don’t feel guilty if you put your feet up, watch a parade, or football game. • Ask for help: The trick is knowing when you need help. As Thanksgiving day nears, be realistic. If you simply have too much to do, make some phone calls and get extra help. Your goal is to have a fun, successful Thanksgiving Day. Thoughts to Ponder...

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” - Melody Beattie “Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.” - WT Purkiser “Greed grabs, Gratitude recieves.” - Unknown “I would rather be able to appreciate things I cannot have than to have things I am not able to appreciate.” —Elbert Hubbard “If you count all your assets, you always show a profit.” – Robert Quillen “Thanksgiving, like contentment, is a learned attribute. The person who hasn’t learned to be content…lives with the delusion he deserves more or something better.” – Robert Flatt

Their sense of humor. This is a prerequisite for military families -- kind of an “If you don’t laugh, you cry,” complex, particularly when it comes to deployments. They’re strong, even under extraordinary circumstances. Due to state-of-the-art technology and medicine, the survivability of injuries is unmatched by any other, and service members are returning home alive, despite devastating injuries. And when they do, their families are there to embrace them. In some cases, they give up homes and careers to care for their military loved one full-time. That’s strength. Military spouses. From the moment they say “I do” to a military member, they begin a life of service every bit as valuable as their spouse’s. They give up careers to follow their military loved one around the world, hold down the home front during deployments, and offer their unfailing love and support. It’s a lot to ask of anyone, and they voluntarily shoulder this burden. Military kids. They’re just amazing. They change schools, on average, six to eight times over the course of their parent’s military career. They deal with long separations from loved ones – who aren’t headed out for a business trip, but for a year in a combat zone. Despite everything that’s thrown at them, they are strong, brave, and adaptable. Other family members. People often forget about the extended family members who serve, too. The grandparents who open their homes to grandkids during deployments, the sisters and brothers who call and send care packages, a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins offering their unwavering support. Their service and sacrifice. They, too, serve this nation. They weather holidays, birthdays, and major milestones without their military loved one. In the worst cases, they must deal with their loved one’s ultimate sacrifice.

Please take a moment to thank a Military Family this month, and year-round. Or, even better, offer to give them a hand, whether it’s with child care, cooking a meal, or raking leaves for them.

November is Child Safety & Protection Month!

Five Things to Consider For Child Safety Protection Month

Every parent tries to be aware of the dangers that their children face every day, including ensuring that they are safe in their own home. However, no matter how proactive you are in child-proofing your home, you may not realize some everyday items could present unknown dangers. Kids are curious and fast! And sometimes, those traits can get them in trouble. Here are five things to consider when child-proofing your home to help prevent as many injuries as possible: 1.Workout Equipment Safety. Nearly 25,000 kids are injured every year because of workout equipment. Be sure to keep your exercise equipment in a locked room, remove and hide the safety key in a place your children will not find it (this way the machine will not turn on), and put your weights in a place your children cannot access them. 2. Bathroom Safety. 40,000 emergency room visits a year are made by children who suffered injuries in their own bathroom. Make sure you have safety caps on all prescriptions and medicines, and put all cleaning products in a locked cabinet or up high out of their reach. Never leave young children alone in the bathtub or near water ,and keep the floors dry so your kids do not slip. 3. In the Bedroom. Almost 10,000 babies and infants are injured in cribs and playpens each year. To keep your kids safe from the potential dangers in their own beds, be sure to check the furniture so that it is steady and there are no sharp edges. Don’t use any type of plastic sheets on their beds, never tie pacifiers or bibs around your child’s neck before putting them to bed, and avoid cribs with cutouts that a child can slip through or become stuck in. 4. Living Room Dangers. The TV is a frequent cause of injuries that are treated in the emergency room. Make sure your television in out of your kids’ reach so they are unable to pull it over on themselves. Cords from blinds or drapes, and other rope-like treatments, present a strangulation danger for your kids, so be sure they are put up high so your kids are unable to get their hands on them. 5. Be Safe in the Kitchen. The kitchen contains more dangerous items than any other room in your house and is the most dangerous to your children. When using the stove, always use the back burners and be sure the handles are turned inward. Keep your kids away from blenders and beaters; many kids have gotten their hair and fingers tangled up, so be sure to remind them pull their hair back, and not to touch. Keep your cleaning supplies out of reach, or in a locked cabinet, this way your kids can’t get into any chemicals that could be fatal to them. Many children like to help their parents cook in the kitchen. Before you allow them to help out, make sure you go over the rules that you have set to keep them safe. Never let your kids cook alone until they are at an appropriate age and have Info retrieved online at: http://blog.k12.com/online-public-schools/ your permission to use the appliances without your supervision. five-things-consider-child-safety-protection-month#.UlwKMZ_D_cs Open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Saturday 9-5, Thursday & Friday 9-7, Sunday Closed.

A risk factor is something negative in a young person’s environment that increases the likelihood of substance use, health issues, or behavior problems. 24

Dear Battle of the Sexes: I just can't win with my wife. One week, she's complaining that I work too many hours, and that I'm not home enough with her and the kids. But then the following week, she's complaining that we don't have enough money. Right now, she's only working part-time so she can be with the kids when they need her, but it doesn't bring in the money. So, that means that I have to work longer hours to get the overtime so we can pay the bills. I just don't understand her thinking. Well, actually I think she just doesn't think before she speaks. So stop complaining! We cannot have it all! - Anonymous, Rote

Zakiyyah, 17, loves all kinds of music and dreams of becoming a singer or a music producer. She also enjoys dancing and would like to own a dance studio and teach others. A compassionate teen, she wants to help the homeless. For now, she keeps busy with a variety of activities including dancing, sports, creative writing, and playing instruments. She played the piano and the flute in the past. In school she is a good student and has many friends. Along with her plans for the future, Zakiyyah has a more immediate goal—to be adopted. Her ideal family would be positive role models that would give her good advice, would encourage her to confide in them, and would love her unconditionally. “All kids want to be loved,” she says. “ I want a place to call home, even when I am an adult.”

Adrianna

There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works. For more information contact Crystal Allen at the National Adoption Center. Email: callen@adopt.org or call 267-443-1867.

Jamir is an inquisitive 8 year old who delights in learning about new things. His social worker says that he is very imaginative, creative, and curious. She says he has a lot of questions about the world and how things work. Jamir loves superheros and playing outdoors. Despite his young age, he is already thinking about a career. But first, his plans include going to college. After that, he would like to be a police officer or a firefighter. His choice of a profession is not surprising since he likes to help people. For now, however, his thoughts are focused on finding a forever family, one that will take him places. Jamir especially would like the family to take him to dinner, shopping, and to the mall. His social worker says that he would fit into any family.

“Let The Redeemed of the Lord Say Thanks”

Research has shown that saying thanks for the good stuff in life makes for a happier and healthier you! I’m sure this would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. Ps 107:2 & 8 says, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say this…let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind…Thanksgiving is mentioned in the Bible at least one hundred and forty times. The feast of the Tabernacle in the Old Testament was perhaps the beginning of Thanksgiving Day. It was not only for a day, but for a whole week. (Duet 16:13-15.) I remember Thanksgiving in Zambia. Our turkey was more bones than meat, but how thankful we were for our American friends as we gathered for that meal. We gave thanks to the Lord for His unfailing Love and His wonderful deeds as our Scripture says. I also traveled to the bush to visit a sewing project. The moms clad in just a ragged piece of cloth held up little dresses that they had sewn for their children and sang, “Lord how I love you. You have done so much for me….so very very much, so very very much for me.” Do we realize just how much God has done for us? “Thanks” is a word we often say in passing. It’s the way to end a conversation… “Thanks for the memories.” “Thanks for the help.” These words are often spoken without thinking. We can’t just say thanks and leave it at that for all the bounty and blessings that God has provided. God has blessed us for a purpose. That we may be a blessing to others. Let’s be thankful in some tangible way. That is why it is called Thanksgiving, not thanks-being or thanks-thinking or thanks-speaking. Glorify God by passing His love on to others. There is someone who needs you, someone that you could show a kindness to and not expect anything in return. Allow God to bless you by sharing His love to bless someone else. Let the redeemed in the Lord say “Thanks!”

Germ Patrol:

Remedies for Common Winter Illnesses

Kids 3 and under are especially vulnerable to ear infections, stomach bugs, colds, and more. Refer to the following remedies for the common illnesses your child may encounter this winter: Common Cold Chances your child will catch it: 99 percent. Young kids typically get three to ten colds every year. Symptoms: A runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, cough, sore throat, headache, and mild fever. Contagious? Yes, for about five days. Rx: Make sure your child gets plenty of fluids and rest. Use a cool-mist humidifier. Give him/her infants’ or children’s ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce the fever & achiness, and saline nose drops if he/she is congested. Avoid cold medication if your child is under 6. You need to know: Cold germs can live on toys, door handles, and other surfaces for up to two days. There are more than 200 cold-causing viruses, so chances are your child will catch a different bug each time. But he/ she is more likely to stay healthy if you teach him/her to avoid touching his/her eyes and nose and to wash their hands frequently (and thoroughly). Reduce your child’s exposure to germs by wiping down grocery carts, restaurant tabletops, and high chairs before using them. Stomach Flu (Viral Gastroenteritis) Chances your child will catch it: 90 percent of kids will get at least one stomach bug by age 4. Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Contagious? Extremely. Your child is highly infectious for as long as he/she has diarrhea, and the virus can live in his/her stool for several weeks after that. Rx: Give your child plenty of fluids (such as water and Pedialyte) to prevent dehydration. If he/she can’t hold anything down, have them take small sips through a straw or from a spoon or dropper. You can also try ice pops and Jello -- the sweet taste might make it more fun to eat. You need to know: Thanks to the relatively new rotavirus oral vaccine (which is safe for babies 2 months

and older), 79 percent fewer children now get this serious stomach bug. Ear Infection Chances your child will catch it: 75 percent of kids have one by age 3. Symptoms: Your child will likely have a fever, pull at his/her ears, and be irritable. He/she may also have trouble sleeping. Contagious? No, but the cold that led to the ear infection probably is. Rx: Ibuprofen or acetaminophen will reduce the pain and fever. Your pediatrician may prescribe antibiotics or wait to see if the infection clears up on its own. You need to know: An ear infection can literally appear overnight. Flu (Influenza) Chances your child will catch it: Up to 40 percent of all kids come down with the flu each year. Symptoms: High fever, body aches, chills, sore throat, cough, runny nose. Contagious? Yes -- your child could pass it on for about two weeks. Rx: The best medicine is prevention: Make sure your child gets a flu shot every fall (once he/she is at least 6 months old). If the virus is diagnosed within 48 hours and he/she is at least a year old, your doctor may give him/her Tamiflu to reduce the symptoms and duration of the illness. Otherwise, simply treat it as you would a common cold. You need to know: Flu shots won’t completely protect your child since different strains of the virus hit every winter, but they may still be well worth getting: Kids under 2 (and those of any age who have asthma) are at high risk for complications -- including dehydration and breathing problems -- that may require hospitalization. To your Health!

November is National Diabetes Month

You Can live life Again

Family health history is an important risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.

Did you know? • Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes. • Seven million people with diabetes do not even know that they have this disease. • An estimated 79 million adults in the U.S. have prediabetes, placing them at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. • Having a family history of diabetes places you at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. • If you are a woman who had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, you are at increased risk for developing diabetes, and the child of that pregnancy is at increased risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes. But there is good news! If you are at risk for diabetes, there are things you can do to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

Outpatient Cancer Rehabilitation Program Cancer and its treatments affect patients in many ways and can have a significant impact on daily life. The outpatient cancer rehabilitation program at HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation

You can take steps to prevent type 2 diabetes! Although you cannot change your family health history, knowing about it can give you the information you need to work with your health care team to take action on the things you can change. If you are at risk for type 2 diabetes, you can prevent or delay this disease by making important lifestyle changes. If you’re overweight, losing five to seven percent of your body weight (for example, 10 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds) can help to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Here are some tips to help you do this: • Make healthy food choices, choose water to drink instead of sugary drinks, and eat smaller portions. • Be active at least 30 minutes, five days per week to help burn calories and lose weight. • Ask family members to be active with you. • Write down all the foods you eat and drink and the number of minutes you are active and review it daily to help you reach your goals. If you had gestational diabetes: • Get tested for diabetes six to 12 weeks after your baby is born, and at least every three years after that. • Breastfeeding your baby may lower your child’s risk for type 2 diabetes. • Talk to your doctor if you plan to become pregnant again in the future. • Try to reach your pre-pregnancy weight six to 12 months after your baby is born – even if you do not reach your ‘goal’ weight, research shows that a moderate weight loss if you are overweight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce risk. • Remember that you are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes in the future. Follow a healthy lifestyle and encourage your family to join you. Stay at a healthy weight by making healthy food choices and moving more. By taking these steps to prevent type 2 diabetes, you also are taking steps that can help lower your risk for other health problems such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and nerve damage. That’s a big reward for you and your family! Info retrieved online at: http://ndep.nih.gov/am-i-at-risk/family-history/index.aspx#main

Gayle's Cookless Cuisine

Gayle’s Granola

This recipe makes a big batch but you can freeze it, pack it in pretty jars and give out as gifts, or put it in a paper bag and put a pretty sticker on it. 6-8 cups old fashioned rolled oats 2 cups unsweetened coconut chips 1-2 cups raw sunflower seeds 1-2 cups raw pumpkin seeds 2 cups chopped raw walnuts 2 cups chopped almonds * You can actually use any combination of nuts and seeds, whatever you have on hand. Add: 1 cup raw honey, agave, or maple syrup 1 cup melted coconut oil Mix with your hands till everything is coated. Will be sticky. Put on baking sheet. (you may have to do in batches) Turn oven on to 350 and bake till toasted a light golden brown. Pour in a large bowl and let sit to cool. In the meantime, prepare your dried ingredients. Here’s what I added, but of course you can use any dried fruit you desire. Get creative. 2 cups dried banana chips (chopped) 2 cups dried cherries 2 cups dried dates (chopped) 2 - 3 cups dried apples (you may chop them if you want) Last, but not least - add a bag of dark chocolate chips. Make sure your rolled oat ingredients are cool before you put in the chocolate chips. Mix everything together and Enjoy!

1) Be sure to use the proper oil for cold weather conditions. Try using a 5W-30 when changing your oil for the winter. If in doubt, refer to your manual or manufacturer. 2) Protect your engine - before the weather gets too cold, make sure you are using coolant with ethylene glycol. For most vehicles, a winter ratio is 60% coolant to 40% water. Consult a professional if you need help adjusting the ratio. 3) Thoroughly inspect your battery, cables, terminals, and fluid to make sure your vehicle is ready for winter. 4) Many car makers and tire manufacturers recommend changing all four tires to snow tires in the winter. Another option is all-season tires that you can drive year round. 5) Choose a washer fluid for your windshield that has an anti-freeze solution. 6) Get a tube of glycerine that you can use for de-icing frozen locks. Be sure to leave it in your garage or desk drawer at work, because it won’t help if you leave it in your vehicle and it isn’t accessible because of the frozen locks! 7) Pack an emergency kit that contains flares, blankets, boots, radio, engine oil, washer fluid, coolant, and a flashlight. Including some snacks is also a good idea. 8) Make an appointment with a good mechanic to winterize your vehicle for you.

Dear Greta, My girlfriend is a smart and accomplished 33-year-old woman who wears little girltype clothes. She always looks pretty, but there are times I wish she would dress more like an adult. For instance, last week, we had dinner with my boss, and she wore a pink Minnie Mouse T-shirt and pigtails. How does a man ask a woman to sometimes dress a little more sophisticated? - Walking On Eggshells Dear Walking On Eggshells, I used to worship Minnie Mouse, and then I turned 7. Some women do work the head-to-toe little girl look longer than others, but 33 sounds a little late for it. Maybe your girlfriend has gotten in a style rut and hasn’t noticed that she isn’t pulling off 22-going-on-12 like she used to. Clothes say a lot about a person, but there are times your shirt or skirt, or whatever really needs to shut the heck up, like when you’re accompanying your boyfriend to dinner with his boss. This would be the time to dress to make him look good (more business casual than monkey bars casual). Tell your girlfriend that you always love looking at her and that you aren’t asking her to change her style entirely, just to dress more sophisticated on occasion, especially occasions for your work. She probably has something passable in her closet, but you might offer to take her shopping for a few new additions to her wardrobe. If she’s just forgotten to look up and notice she’s 33, a new little black dress might lead her to realize it’s time to say goodbye to Minnie Mouse, and start dressing in a way that suggests she got out of college about 10 years ago, and not the stroller.
