pensive ways to freshen and improve your home’s look, and consequently, its value. And we’re talking everywhere -- your home’s interior walls, of course, but also the exterior: the siding, trim and associated elements, like decks and sheds. Don’t forget to consider interior features as well. A coat of paint can do wonders to brighten up dingy cupboards, for example, or old paneling. In the past, neutral colors were seen as the best way to create a fresh, bright, versatile look. But today, people crave color, so don’t be afraid to consider a wide range of hues. Just stay away from super-bright colors. Don’t really have an eye for color? Not a neat painter? Then hire a professional painter to do the dirty work.

Plus... There are many small items you can add to the home that buyers will perceive as adding value. Some of these include: • Alarm systems • Water filtration system • Luxury touches, such as an upgraded dishwasher...whirlpool bathtub...spa-like features in bathroom...built-in wine coolers.

Smart Tips

- Home Tasks to work on this Month

☑ Daylight Saving Time begins. Mark the occasion by replacing batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

☑ Review the contents of your medicine cabinets and throw away dated prescriptions

and over-the-counter medicines. Be sure all medicines are out of the reach of children or contained in a cabinet equipped with childproof locks.

☑ Celebrate spring by cleaning the garage. Hold a yard sale, or organize a community yard sale with neighbors. Dispose of paint thinners, household cleaners, and pesticides properly. Contact your city’s department of public works to find out the next scheduled collection of hazardous materials. ☑ Clean the refrigerator, inside and out, with mild detergent. Remove all trays and

shelves, wash, and allow to dry thoroughly before replacing them. Remove old ice from ice-making tray.

☑ After heavy rains, inspect your basement walls for signs of moisture. If you detect wetness, run a portable dehumidifier. If condition persists, consult a waterproofing contractor. ☑ Check to make sure your sump pump works properly by pouring water into the pump

silo to raise the float and activate the motor.

☑ Test the pressure and temperature relief valve on your water heater by opening it and allowing some water to flow out. If little or no water flows out, or it doesn’t shut off, replace it. Bad valves can cause explosions. ☑ Spring is a good time to build a doghouse. Make sure to provide adequate roof ventilation to allow hot air to escape. And don’t use pressure-treated wood in any area where your dog might chew it. Info retrieved online at www.weather.com/outdoors/home-improvement/home-tips/march-home-maintenance_2010-08-24

Kitchen Remodeling Ideas ► Open Up and Update - Opt for open shelves instead of upper cabinets to provide display space and make a small kitchen feel larger. Install shelves at standard upper-cabinet height -the lower shelf is 18 inches above the counter. ► Upgrade Your Appliances - The most popular kitchen update is installing new energy-efficient appliances, such as a dual-fuel range with convection double ovens, a high-tech range hood, an ENERGY STAR-certified refrigerator, and a water-saving paneled dishwasher. ► Update Hardware - Add more personality with new cabinet hardware. Create a cohesive look with a mix of knobs and pulls in the same style family. ► Counter Fit - Get the look and texture of stone with all the benefits of laminate. Travertine silver laminate with a bullnose edge looks like the real deal for a fraction of the price. ► Lighten It Up - Brighten your room with a new ceiling light, mini-pendants, and undercabinet lighting. Add control with dimmers. ► Spice Things Up - Make every inch of storage count with door-mounted shelves. They make use of wasted space and are perfect for keeping spices close at hand. Spring Outdoor Home Improvements

Prepare outdoor spaces for summer. The spring months are best for beginning any larger scale projects you have in mind for your outdoor living spaces. The earlier you begin, the sooner you may begin to enjoy them. So make sure that you spend time in the winter consulting with landscape designers and builders, so that projects like the construction of patios, decks, and swimming pools, can be executed with the first signs of warmth.

Clean and seal wood deck. Deck stains with at least some pigment last longer than clear sealers. Clean the patio. Moss and mildew can make a patio slippery, while debris can leave behind stains. Read up on proper cleaning techniques and solutions to use before you begin.

Spring Home Improvement ... Spring Home Improvement A couple Weekend-Worthy Projects to Do This Spring Prevent Dryer Fires Cleaning out your dryer’s venting system is a quick weekend project and an important cleaning chore to help keep you and your family safe. Every year, an average of 14,500 clothes dryers catch fire. This isn’t due to a wiring issue—rather, it’s because lint collects in the dryer’s exhaust ducts. Lint builds up very fast, is highly combustible, and can spread a fire quickly. Cleaning your dryer vent once a year can help.

Add New Life toYour Kitchen Cabinets This weekend, freshen up the look of your kitchen cabinets with a simple improvement. If you have boring flat-panel cabinet doors, you can create the look of far more expensive raised-panel doors by simply adding molding. For complete instructions on adding molding, go online to: www.oprah.com/home/5-Weekend-Projects-for-Spring-Tom-Kraeutler/1

March is Mom & Pop Business Owners Month

Little Plum Auto Service

March 29th is National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day In a world where bigger is often mistaken as better and conglomerates seem to own everything, it’s nice to celebrate smallbusinesses. Here are some suggestions: • Avoid chain stores today. Wherever you live, there is some mom and pop store you can visit. Broaden your horizons and try that little coffee shop you drive past on the way to work everyday. • Choose a local independent grocery store instead of going to a big chain. Try lunch from a small family-owned restaurant instead of hitting a drive-thru. • Go online to the Etsy website, and begin drooling over the amazing stuff on there! Handmade lives on Etsy. Although it’s not what you might think of when you think about a mom and pop business, many of those Etsy shops are family affairs. Most of them are independent artisans selling their wares directly to the consumer. All of them would appreciate a little business boost from a conscientious buyer!

March is Mom & Pop Business Owners Month

Long Live March 29th Mom & Pop: is National Mom & Pop Business Why Small Businesses Have a Magic Touch Owners Day The saying “bigger is better” doesn’t always hold true. Take a look: Boutique-themed shops are popping up everywhere. Bed and breakfasts are gaining popularity as they compete against large chain hotels. Why? Because small bed and breakfasts and privately-owned shops not only offer character and a unique experience, they also embody that “make yourself at home” atmosphere. And that’s exactly what travelers are looking for – a home away from home! The restaurant industry is taking this boutique-y lead as well. Many privately-owned cafés are now stealing the spotlight of larger chain stores. Smaller boutique cafés offer a personalized experience from the moment you walk through the door. With competitive beverages, independent coffee shops are giving the bigger chains a run for their money. America is moving from large chains – which don’t offer much in the way of showing their customer appreciation – and more towards smaller establishments that take a vested interest in the wants and needs of shoppers. The individual attention small businesses offer make the experience more enjoyable and consumers around the country agree. Time to ditch the bigger is better attitude and go with the thought: smaller can actually be better! Make a commitment to visit more Mom & Pop Shops in our area!

Family ... Family ... Family ... Family ... Family ... Family

Our Annual Valentine's Day Contest Winner Congratulations to our winner, Dawn Snyder, who wrote about her sweetheart, Tim Gill of Lock Haven:

“Honest. Reliable. Caring. Loving. Smart. Funny. Witty. Intelligent. Supportive. I could list so many other adjectives describing the truly remarkable person whom I’m lucky enough to call mine. He has made me believe in love - true and honest love like I thought could not exist. He respects me, listens to me (and truly cares to hear what I have to say), and shares life with me as a true partner. Chores are not gender specific and we approach everything as a team. Blending a family is no easy task, but we do - through good and bad - because we know we have something very special that few truly find in this life. A best friend and a soulmate. It took me far too long and many mistakes to find him, but as our song says, “God blessed the broken road,” and we truly believe that our past trials and tribulations brought us together, ready to appreciate what each has to offer. It may sound cliche, but we really do complete each other. Timothy Gill is, by far, the most incredible person I am blessed to know. From the little things to the big, and everything in between, he doesn’t let a moment slip by to show or tell me how much he loves and appreciates me. Every day that I open my packed lunch, I find a note from him that brings a smile to my face and warmth to my heart. He’s not one to just tell me he loves me, but shows me in so many different and beautiful ways. It’s truly incredible. I may not win this contest, but I have won the life partner jackpot. And by someone reading this, one more person knows how happy two people truly are. Those who know me know this well - I am more than happy to tell anyone how I have finally found the person completely deserving of my entire heart, and someone whom I can trust with it. imothy Gill is that man, and for him I could not be more thankful.”

Thank you,

Dawn

8 Tax Savers for Parents

1. Dependents. In most cases, you can claim your child as a dependent. This applies even if your child was born anytime in 2013. For more details, see Publication 501, Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information. 2. Child Tax Credit. You may be able to claim the Child Tax Credit for each of your qualifying children under the age of 17 at the end of 2013. The maximum credit is $1,000 per child. If you get less than the full amount of the credit, you may be eligible for the Additional Child Tax Credit. For more about both credits, see the instructions for Schedule 8812, Child Tax Credit, and Publication 972, Child Tax Credit. 3. Child and Dependent Care Credit. You may be able to claim this credit if you paid someone to care for one or more qualifying persons. Your dependent child or children under age 13 are among those who are qualified. You must have paid for care so you could work or look for work. For more, see Publication 503, Child and Dependent Care Expenses. 4. Earned Income Tax Credit. If you worked but earned less than $51,567 last year, you may qualify for EITC. If you have three qualifying children, you may get up to $6,044 as EITC when you file and claim it on your tax return. Use the EITC Assistant tool at IRS.gov to find out if you qualify or see Publication 596, Earned Income Tax Credit. 5. Adoption Credit. You may be able to claim a tax credit for certain expenses you paid to adopt a child. For details, see the instructions for Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses. 6. Higher education credits. If you paid for higher education for yourself or an immediate family member, you may qualify for either of two education tax credits. Both the American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit may reduce the amount of tax you owe. If the American Opportunity Credit is more than the tax you owe, you could be eligible for a refund of up to $1,000. See Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education. 7. Student loan interest. You may be able to deduct interest you paid on a qualified student loan, even if you don’t itemize deductions on your tax return. For more information, see Publication 970. 8. Self-employed health insurance deduction. If you were self-employed and paid for health insurance, you may be able to deduct premiums you paid to cover your child under the Affordable Care Act. It applies to children under age 27 at the end of the year, even if not your dependent. See Notice 2010-38 for information. Children Waiting For A Home...

When asked what she likes most about herself, Jade, 11, replies, “I’m pretty, I’m nice and I’m good…well, most of the time.” Jade loves animals and hopes to have a career working with them, especially as a veterinarian. However, she’s keeping her options open and is also considering other possibilities. “I want to be a singer, a police officer, or someone famous,” she says. For now, Jade keeps busy with a variety of activities, including watching television, singing, dancing, listening to the radio and riding her bike. In school her favorite subjects are art and math. She works hard to increase her reading and writing skills. Along with her desires for the future is a fervent wish for the present-to have a forever family with a mom and a dad who are caring and loving.

Tayron, 13, is very funny and usually the life of the party. He is diagnosed with a congenital disorder that causes joint stiffness and muscle weakness. However, this does not keep him from enjoying life and having fun. An avid Philadelphia sports fan, Tayron follows each team and knows the players and their statistics. He was thrilled last October when he had a opportunity to visit the Phillies’ stadium. His tour of the facility included the media and locker rooms. There was a surprise waiting for him in the locker room. One of the lockers had his name on it and inside was a jersey and autographed hat from his favorite player. One of his greatest wishes is to have a forever family that would welcome him into their home. Medical training is available for his adoptive family.

Emonie 15, likes to read, watch movies and listen to music. She also enjoys going to the mall and spending time with her friends. Emonie takes great pride in her appearance and delights in buying new clothes and having her hair and nails done. In school Emonie receives special education services and she works hard to earn good grades. She is learning to remain positive in stressful situations. Emonie has experienced many separations and losses and needs the stability of a permanent home. The ideal situation for her would be with a patient, loving and supportive family that will help her reach her potential. It would be great if there are pets and other children in the family. Emonie is close to her siblings and it is important that the contact be maintained.

There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works. For more information contact Crystal Allen at the National Adoption Center. Email: callen@adopt.org or call 267-443-1867.

By John Phillips - Lead Pastor of Crossroads Community Church 1454 State Route 44 Highway, Jersey Shore 570-398-5533 • www.jscrossroads.org Last week I went to a restaurant famous for their two pound hamburgers. If you could eat one in less than 45 minutes, you won a t-shirt and got your name on the wall of fame. I didn’t eat anything all day to prepare myself for this challenge. Once we arrived at the restaurant, my mouth started watering and my stomach started growling, but my mind started having second thoughts. I began to wonder if this was a wise thing to do, since I’m now 42 years old, and my digestive system isn’t what it used to be. My kids wanted me to listen to my stomach, while my wife wanted me to listen to my brain. The Bible says in Proverbs 9:11, “Through wisdom, your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.” Living a wise life isn’t as hard as some may imagine. Most of the time, wisdom is simply knowing what to listen to; your brain or your body. Wisdom is not only knowing what to listen to, but also who to listen to. Everything inside of me wanted to say yes to the two pound hamburger challenge. I would be a hero to my kids and get my name on the wall of fame. However, my wife said, “You will be up all night regretting it.” I ended up making the wiser choice and just ordering the half-pounder. Instead of getting a t-shirt and my name on the wall of fame, I settled for a satisfying meal and a lot of fun with my family. Wherever your life takes you, say yes to wisdom and enjoy a long and happy life. May the Lord bless you for reading this article and give you the strength to make wise choices. Know that there is a God in heaven that loves you and is pulling for you each and every day.

Better Times

After years of bashing through their material with electric instruments, Shoebox Letters has softened their sound - and the result is dramatic. Songwriter Dennis Winslow has always had something to say, but now the words are accompanied by acoustic guitar, mandolin, and steel guitar, which allows the high harmonies to ride over the instrumentation.

National poison prevention awareness month by Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic

Pet poisoning with common household items is, unfortunately, a fairly common situation. Many items present a toxic risk to pets, including xylitol poisoning (found in many sugarless gums, candies and mints), human medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds and antidepressants, flowers, chocolate, fertilizers, and various pest control products. Symptoms can range from digestive upset and neurological signs, to liver and/or kidney failure. Here are tips on how you as a pet owner can provide a poison-safe pet environment. Plants: Azalea, oleander, caster bean, sago palm, Lilies, and yew plant are all toxic to your pet. Household Cleaning Agents: Many have ingredients that are toxic and can cause anything from mild stomach upset to severe burns of the mouth, tongue or stomach. Store all products in a secured area. Medications: Secure all prescription drugs and over the counter medicines out of reach of your pets. Many can be deadly to animals. Always consult your veterinarian before administering any medications intended for humans, which can be lethal to animals, even in small doses. Common Household Items: Toxic ones include mothballs, potpourri, coffee grounds, fabric softener sheets, batteries, cigarettes, and hand & foot warmers. Automotive Products: Less than one tbsp. of antifreeze can be deadly to a 20 pound dog. Propylene glycol is a safer form of antifreeze. Read Labels: Before administering any product to your pet, such as flea medicine, always read labels and follow directions on the package. Never use products intended for cats on dogs or vice versa. Pesticides and Rodenticides: When using rat, mouse, snail or slug baits, or ant or roach traps, be sure they are placed in areas inaccessible to your pets. Most contain ingredients that can attract your pets. Products could cause seizures, internal bleeding, kidney failure, or death in dogs and cats. Do not allow your pets to enter rooms in which insecticidal foggers or sprays have been applied for the period of time indicated on the label. Foods that are Hazardous: The list of toxic human food includes onions, onion powder, chocolate, alcoholic beverages, yeast dough, coffee, tea, salt, macadamia nuts, hops (used in beer brewing), raisins and grapes. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. If you suspect your dog or cat has ingested something poisonous, call the helpline or your local vet immediately. The Pet Poison Helpline is available 24 hours a day - 1-800-213-6680. Sources: www.aspca.org; www.petpoisonhelpline.com; www.mca.org; www.angelfire.com; www.vetmedicine.about.com

March is Save Your Vision Month!

Maintaining Good Eye Health -

Don’t take your eye Protect your eyesight with these tips: health for granted. 1. Eat for Good Vision - Protecting your eyes starts with the food on your plate. Studies have shown that nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E may help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Regularly eating these foods can help lead to good eye health: •Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards •Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish •Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources •Oranges and other citrus fruits/juices 2. Quit Smoking for Better Eyesight - Smoking makes you more likely to get cataracts, optic nerve damage & macular degeneration. If you’ve tried to quit smoking before and started smoking again, keep trying. 3. Wear Sunglasses for Good Vision - The right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure makes you more likely to get cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose sunglasses that block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound lenses help protect your eyes from the side. Polarized lenses reduce glare when driving. If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection, but it’s still a good idea to wear sunglasses for more protection. 4. Use Safety Eyewear at Home, at Work, and While Playing Sports - If you work with hazardous or airborne materials at work or home, wear safety glasses or protective goggles every time. Certain sports such as ice hockey, racquetball, and lacrosse can also lead to eye injury - wear eye protection at all times. 5. Look Away From the Computer for Good Eye Health - Staring at a computer screen can cause: eyestrain, blurry vision, difficulty focusing at a distance, dry eyes, headaches, and neck, back, and shoulder pain. Protect your eye health by taking the following steps: • Make sure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date and adequate for computer use. • Some people may need glasses to help with contrast, glare, and eye strain when using a computer. • Position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen. • Try to avoid glare on your computer from windows and lights. Use an anti-glare screen if needed. • Choose a comfortable, supportive chair. Position it so that your feet are flat on the floor. • If your eyes are dry, blink more. Optician: Craig Mardis • Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Success Story...

Rehab Helps Woman Move Forward After Brain Surgery

Vicky Nelson, 35, is an avid runner. She completed two half-marathons this past fall, and has plans for many more. “My goal is to run in every state and abroad,” she says. However, Vicky’s life took an unexpected turn last year when doctors discovered that she had a brain tumor, called a vestibular schwannoma. A vestibular schwannoma is a benign, usually slow-growing tumor that develops from the balance and hearing nerves supplying the inner ear. As the tumor grows, it presses against the hearing and balance nerves, usually causing hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and dizziness/loss of balance. If the tumor becomes large, it will eventually press against nearby brain structures (such as the brainstem and the cerebellum), becoming life-threatening. Vicky had surgery to remove the tumor, and six days later she went to HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital for inpatient rehabilitation. She worked hard to regain her balance and to re-learn activities of daily living, from dressing to preparing meals. She had three hours of therapy a day, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Therapists also worked with Vicky on vestibular exercises and balance testing to help her walk safely and with more stability. After 13 days at HealthSouth, Vicky was discharged to her home. With a husband, two young sons, and a daughter in college, she has plenty of inspiration to get better. Vicky adds, “Attitude is everything; it’s the way I was raised. You can’t let this consume you.” Vicky continues her therapy twice a week at HealthSouth’s Outpatient Clinic in Pleasant Gap. As an educator for the last ten years in both public and private sectors, Vicky is looking forward to working again. “The hands of healthcare, my faith, and continued support from family and friends are helping me to move forward.” She adds, “Everyone at HealthSouth, including the doctors, cleaning staff, nurses and therapists, all represented excellence in customer service. You don’t see that often these days.” When Vicky is ready, she and the therapists at HealthSouth’s Outpatient Clinic in Pleasant Gap are planning to run a 5K race to celebrate her recovery. DANGER SIGNS: Be alert for symptoms that worsen over time. Your child or teen should be seen in an emergency department right away if he/she has: • One pupil (the black part in the middle of the eye) is larger than the other • Drowsiness or cannot be awakened • A headache that gets worse and does not go away • Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination • Repeated vomiting or nausea • Slurred speech • Convulsions or seizures • Difficulty recognizing people or places • Increasing confusion, restlessness, or agitation • Unusual behavior • Loss of consciousness (even a brief loss of consciousness should be taken seriously)

To your Health!

Timely, helpful, and realistic info you can apply to improve your life through better health!

March is National Nutrition Month 10 tips for eating healthier in 2014

1. Don’t skip breakfast. Eating a breakfast with protein and fiber will help stabilize your blood sugar and curb your late morning cravings. Foods like Greek yogurt are a great source of protein, as are eggs or egg whites. Whole wheat toast, oatmeal, and fresh fruit are also good sources of fiber. 2. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables at every meal. The more colors of food on your plate, the better. Also, if you can’t get your children to eat vegetables, sneak it in their food by pureeing it and adding it to sauces or soups. 3. Cut out the fat and salt. Try roasting or grilling your meats and vegetables instead of frying. Choose leaner meats and pull the skin off poultry. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different herbs and seasonings, such as cinnamon, chile peppers, basil, thyme, cilantro, turmeric, or whatever is in season at the farmers markets. It helps add flavor without the salt. 4. Increase your intake of fiber and whole grains. Add a tablespoon of chia seeds to your morning oatmeal or cereal. The nutrient rich seeds are high in protein and antioxidants. The tiny seeds will make you feel full, reducing the tendency to over eat. 5. Eat more foods with omega-3, a beneficial fatty acid. Foods with omega-3 help improve your heart and brain function. Foods high in omega-3 include salmon, mackerel, tuna, flax seed, spinach, and walnuts. It’s recommended to have at least three servings a week. 6. Increase your fluids. Oftentimes, when we feel tired and worn down, it is because we are dehydrated. You should aim to drink between 64 to 80 ozs. of water a day. 7. Plant your own garden. Growing your own food helps increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables and gets children more interested in what they are eating. 8. Try healthy snacks. Limit salty and fried snack foods, such as potato chips. This time of year stock up on winter fruits for snacks and at meal time. Dried fruit and nuts also are a good source of healthy snacks. 9. Choose low-fat or nonfat milk products. Also, try using low-fat plain yogurt or avocados — that have a heart healthy fat — for dipping vegetables or other healthy snacks. 10. Use smaller plates to help with portion control. When you eat from smaller plates, you feel satisfied without overeating. Info retrieved online at: http://www.fresnobee.com.

Battle of The Sexes

Dear Battle of the Sexes: My wife and I have been married for over 20 years. Every year, for the last 10, I do not have a wife for most of the year. I lose her to pool leagues. I am not even a thought in her head if there is a pool shooting activity going on somewhere. Most nights of one of her pool leagues, supper is bought, or I fend for myself. She gets behind on laundry, and does not like the way I fold things, so I can’t really help her without putting her even further behind. Right now, she is about 3 weeks behind. Every hamper and basket are full of dirty laundry. Both the washer and dryer are full and will sit that way for days. We both work, so I understand she gets tired. But hardly ever too tired to go to a pool match or tournament. If I were on my death bed, I think she would whisper to me to stay alive until her match was over, then she would be back. Pool is the most important thing in her life. After a Saturday pool tournament, she will stay in bed the next day until noon, then complain that she does not have time to do all the things she needs to do, like go to the store. Not quite sure how to tell her I can’t take much more. - Behind The 8-Ball, Lock Haven

Dear Battle of the Sexes: My boyfriend of 3 years is afraid of commitment and I’m not sure how much longer I want to wait. We are almost 30 years old, and I want to start a family sooner than later, and don’t want to start until we are married. Call me old-fashioned, but marriage before carriage. If he doesn’t ask in the next six months, I am going to have to start looking for another Mr. Right. - Anonymous, Jersey Shore

PROPANE GAS

Appliances and Service

Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from 6 to 18 years old, who live in New York City. The trips provide opportunities for a city child to experience simple things that they may never get the chance to do - such as swimming, running barefoot through the grass, and catching fireflies.

Our goal is to get two buses to our area! Good News - March

Centre County youth tell us that community disorganization is something that puts them at risk. This includes how youth view their neighborhood -is there crime or fighting? Do they feel safe?

A risk factor is something negative in a young person’s environment that increases the likelihood of substance use, health issues, or behavior problems. 60

Ask Greta

Dear Greta, Why do “helpless” women have men constantly doting on them, while women like me are deemed “too strong?” I was raised by a 70’s feminist and single mother. At 21, I became a widowed single mother. I put myself through school and own a home and a business. I now have a boyfriend who feels I don’t “need” him enough. He says I need to drop some of the balls I’m juggling so he can pick them up. “Just take them!” I say. We recently had a yard sale, and I did everything and was resentful and exhausted. I threw a little fit and walked away. My man then put forth a superhuman effort and cleaned everything up. But, as usual, he didn’t handle things until I was unable to. -Superwoman

Dear Superwoman, The modern damsel doesn’t have to be in distress, but it helps if she at least has a few items not yet crossed off her to-do list. Otherwise, what is there for Superman to do? No sooner did you find a man who says he wants to help than you immediately raised the bar. It isn’t enough that he’s willing to take out the trash from under the sink. You expect him to sense that you want him to and then wrestle you for the bag. What’s with this? Did you get comfy with the belief that women don’t need men and are you now intent on confirming that? You can have the martyrdom merit badge or a relationship; pick any one. Consider that maybe being a strong woman means being strong enough to admit that you need a man for something besides yelling at when he gives the wrong answer to “Do I look fat in this?” You will have to ask for help. Though you probably don’t need a Holy Grail, you could ask him to wield power tools or run to the store to get your kid some cold meds.
