1. Be especially patient with your humans during this time. They may appear to be more stressed-out than usual and they will appreciate comforting dog hugs. 2. They may come home with large bags of things they call gifts. Do not assume that all the gifts are yours. 3. Be tolerant if your humans put decorations on you. They seem to get some special kind of pleasure out of seeing how you look with fake antlers. 4. They may bring a large tree into the house and set it up in a prominent place and cover it with lights and decorations. Bizarre as this may seem to you, it is an important ritual for your humans, so there are some things you need to know: • Don’t pee on the tree • Don’t drink water in the container that holds the tree • Mind your tail when you are near the tree • If there are packages under the tree, even ones that smell interesting or that have your name on them, don’t rip them open 5. A big man with a white beard and a very loud laugh may emerge from your fireplace in the middle of the night. DON’T BITE HIM!!

Decide on Your Christmas List. Some people only shop for close family and friends. Other people put together Christmas presents for co-workers, the postal worker, the dog walker, hairdresser, plumber, poker buddies, kid’s teacher, and more. Decide on what you are comfortable with. Keep a general idea of how much you will spend on each person. For instance, you will likely spend more money on your immediate family than on a co-worker. Listen for Clues and Brainstorm Ideas. Have a rough idea of what presents would please the people on your list. Brainstorm ideas, and then write them down with your list. Listen to the person or other people for ideas, and write them down, too. Keep this list in an easy-to-carry form, tucked away in your wallet or checkbook for quick reference. Procrastinating. Put off procrastinating. Many people end up shopping last-minute because they put off the inevitable. Instead, make a plan with solid goals, dates, and timelines. (For instance, shopping will be done by December 20th. Maybe put aside 2 evenings, twice a week for 2 weeks, to accomplish this task.) Leave some wiggle-room in case something comes up, but don’t keep making excuses. It can help to www.bear999.com
have someone who is good about shopping to keep you honest. Have a Shopping Plan. Maybe you’re not the type of person who likes shopping, or doesn’t have the time to browse for Christmas presents all year long. Instead, put aside one period of time, like a weekend or a special shopping trip. Keep Track of Presents. Don’t lose the present or forget who you bought it for. Have a designated area for presents, such as a tote, section of closet, or attic. Be sure that the present won’t be ruined by variations of temperature, humidity, mold, mice, and so on. Write the name of the designated gift-receiver on a removable sticker or piece of tape. That way you’ll remember who you bought it for. If you change your mind, it’s easy to re-designate. Cross their name off the list as soon as possible to avoid forgetting that you already bought them something.

P.E.A.K. Students - Week Three continued
Central Mountain High School
Taylor Knarr Taylor Knarr, a junior, was nominated for PEAK by history teacher Mr. Rhine because, “Taylor is an exceptional student academically, and is involved in many extra-curricular activities. She is taking college courses at LHU in order to challenge herself and is being successful in those courses. She displays leadership qualities often above those of her peers. She is respected among her peers and instructors, has a pleasant personality and great overall attitude.” Taylor plays volleyball and enjoys hunting and fishing.

P.E.A.K. Students at CMHS P.E.A.K. stands for Positive attitude, Encouraging others, Academics, and Kindness. Every other week, 10 teachers are randomly selected to nominate one students who exemplifies these qualities. Nominated students receive rewards for a week long period that includes: a free pass to all CMHS athletic events, a pass to get to the front of the lunch line, the ability to come into school at 9:00 on an extended homeroom day, and a preferred parking spot. The purpose of P.E.A.K. is to recognize and reward students making a positive contribution to Central Mountain High School.
Congratulations to last month’s P.E.A.K. Students! P.E.A.K. week 3 from left: Leidi Hernandez, Wesley Bletz, Connor Winslow, Cameron Porter, Loc Long, Bree Hilty, Ashlin Cronmiller, Mr. Len Ruteki Missing: Taylor Knarr, Sadie Bianchi, and Andrew Wheeler
P.E.A.K. Students - Week Three Connor Winslow Connor Winslow is a senior at Central Mountain High School. He was nominated by Mr. Doug Madenford, who explained, “Connor always exhibits all of the traits that PEAK stands for. He is a leader, a scholar, always brings a positive attitude to class and school. He is a great role model for younger students.” Connor’s favorite memory of high school was making a giant chainsaw-sword in art class. He has a black belt in taekwondo and has traced his family tree back to William Wallace. Sadie Bianchi Sadie is a junior who was nominated by Mr. Houtz because she represents all qualities that a PEAK student should have. She is very pleasant and respects everyone. She takes everyone’s feelings into consideration and has a great work ethic. Outside of school, she enjoys hanging out with her friends and family; she especially enjoys playing with her nieces. An interesting fact is that she collects stuffed penguins. She is very proud of being nominated for PEAK two years in a row. Bree Hilty Junior Bree Hilty felt honored to be a PEAK student, and she is a perfect selection. Bree is a soccer player and can be seen walking our halls with a smile on her face at all times. She was nominated by Mrs. Madden, her math teacher because of her willingness to help her classmates. Bree is a positive role-model for students at Central Mountain High School.
Ashlin Cronmiller Senior Ashlin Cronmiller was nominated by Mrs. Dawn Stabley, school nurse. Ashlin commented, “I was surprised to have received the PEAK award. Outside of school Ashlin works at Weis Markets. Mrs. Stabley nominated her because, “She is a great friend; when her friend returned to school after an illness and was not allowed to wheel herself through school, Ashlin offered to help during the day going to classes.” Andrew Wheeler Senior Andrew Wheeler is a PEAK student. He was nominated by Mrs. Kathy Dorman. Andrew just returned from National Band in Nashville, Tennessee. There is some speculation that Andrew may rank #1 in the class of 2014, but we will wait until graduation to confirm that. He is helpful in class, making sure his peers reach their full potential. He participates in advanced placement classes because he likes the challenge. Cameron Porter Senior Cameron Porter was nominated for PEAK by Mr. Paul Bohnert, Agricultural Mechanics teacher. He was nominated because of the amount of time and effort he puts into being a good student. “I was thrilled because I got to sleep in on Monday!” Porter explained. Cameron’s favorite class is Agricultural Mechanics. “I like this class because it interests me, and it is what I like to do outside of school. In Porter’s spare time, he goes on Jeep rides, works, and farms. He is also on the varsity wrestling team. He is hoping that his three younger brothers will follow in his footsteps. Loc Long Junior Loc Long was nominated by Mellissa Moore, a building assistant at CMHS. His favorite thing to do is hang out with friends and lift at the gym. Loc is super athletic! He is a member of the football team, the track team, and the wrestling team. HE has been wrestling since first grade. Loc is a hard working student and he makes sure to keep his grades up so he can participate in sports. Even as a junior, he is seen as a leader. Leidi Bonilla Hernandez Leidi Bonilla Hernandez is a freshman here at CMHS. She was nominated by Mrs. Amanda Kurtz. Mrs. Kurtz nominated her because, “Since the beginning to the school year, she has demonstrated a positive attitude and kindness towards her fellow peers. In addition, she takes pride in her school work and assists and encourages her fellow classmates to do the same.” Mr. Len Ruteki Mr. Len Ruteki is the first PEAK teacher to be chosen. He was selected by Assistant Principal Nick Verrelli because, “He has done a wonderful job with the implementation of the SUCCESS club and he has ongoing positive interactions with parents, students, and colleagues.” Outside of school, Mr. Ruteki likes to do just about anything dealing with fitness. He does mud runs, lifts, flips tires, and much more. Inside of school, He helps with the Girls’ Soccer team, advises the SUCCESS and chess club, and also is helping to build sets for the drama department.
Keep up the good work!

This is the 21st Annual Bear Country Christmas Wish, and we are proud to work with Leadership Clinton County, Central PA Institute of Science and Technology, Lock Haven University’s Mountain Serve, the McElhattan and Caldwell United Methodist Church, the Bucktail Chapter of Toys for Tots, friends, area businesses, and various organizations to help make Christmas a celebration for hundreds of kids in our area.
Dear Battle of the Sexes: My husband is so dramatic about everything. He thinks he needs to be loud to be heard. Well, he's heard all right - by everybody, blocks away, heck, miles away - about everything. I swear our neighbors think we fight all the time. At times, I catch them looking at me with these sympathetic eyes, like they want to help me get away from his abuse. Well, fortunately, his bark is bigger than his bite. He is not physically abusive by any means, he's just loud! I really want him to zip it up a bit and tone it down about ten notches. It’s embarrassing! - Anonymous, Jersey Shore

Battle of The Sexes
Dear Battle of the Sexes: I have just one complaint about my wife of 15 years, she is too hard on herself. She is a beautiful woman, but does not think so. She thinks she is too fat, too short, has too many wrinkles, too many gray hairs, and on and on and on. I don't know how to boost her self-esteem anymore than I already do by telling her how beautiful she is all the time. I'm afraid she is going through some midlife crisis. I wish she loved herself as much as I love her! She is a gorgeous woman - both inside and out, and it's a shame she doesn't realize it! - Happily Married Husband, Williamsport

Michael, 13, enjoys going to church and participating in its functions. Other favorite activities include playing basketball, and testing his skills at video games. Michael also is a talented artist and it’s no surprise that his best subject in school is art. He also does well in his reading class where he served as a peer tutor last semester. Michael is fascinated with SEPTA and can name practically every trolley route, bus route, El stop and subway station. He dreams of becoming a train engineer or trolley operator when he grows up. A more immediate goal for the teen is to be adopted with his brother. Jabriel is an outgoing and friendly 12-year-old. He is actively involved in his church and is part of its youth ministry. A natural performer, he has a beautiful voice and also has great dance moves. He recently participated in a school play where he was a member ichael abriel of the Temptations. The show was a big hit and Jabriel was one of the main performers. Enrolled in the sixth grade, Jabriel does well in school. He is very conscientious and works hard to please his teachers. He enjoys receiving praise for his efforts and likes to earn rewards for his academic achievements. Last year his project won at the science fair and he was on the honor roll. Jabriel looks forward to visits with his brother, Michael, and wants very much to be adopted with him. They would do well in a family that would provide them with consistent structure, attention, and an abundance of love.

Dahsiyoni, 12, loves to read and visit the library. Imaginative and creative, she writes short stories and poetry. Although most of her stories are fictional, they mirror her life. Writing is an outlet for her feelings. Dahsiyoni hopes to be a teacher some day. For now, she keeps busy with a variety of interests, including drawing, crafts, bowling, and going to the movies. She also likes singing in church and participating in youth activities. Very mature for her age, she often is the mediator when there is conflict among her friends. Despite experiencing much trauma in her young life, Dahsiyoni is resilient and adapts well to change.

There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works. For more information contact Crystal Allen at the National Adoption Center. Email: callen@adopt.org or call 267-443-1867.

Merry Christmas
By Jason Borowicz – Associate Pastor of Crossroads Community Church
1454 State Route 44 Highway • Jersey Shore • 570-398-5533 Join us Sunday - Two Services at 9 & 11 am
During this time of the year we tend to think about shopping, decorating, and the smell of great food coming from the kitchen. To some, it is a greatly anticipated vacation or time simply spent with family. But to others, the holiday season is filled with memories of years past. Often times these memories bring discouragement, loneliness, and many other negative feelings. In a time of year that most people are looking forward to, many others dread it. Can I be a source of encouragement to you? You are not alone. And your past doesn’t have to dictate your future. You may be feeling anxious about the coming holidays and we may live in a world that has many uncertainties. Whether you are feeling lonely, hurt, or lost, we can always lean into the loving arms of our Lord. We can face whatever trials are in our lives with the following in mind. No matter where you find yourself this holiday season remember God notices you, and you are greatly loved! These three things are always true no matter where you are, who you are, or how you feel: God is in control, God is good, and God loves you. In that, we can have true joy during these upcoming holidays. Enjoy life and keep Christ in Christmas! Where help is just around the corner...

Inspired by the music of the 60’s and 70’s, but rooted in today that’s the best description yet of Downtown Mystic, the group led by guitarist Robert Allen.
Find out More about Downtown Mystic and Buy Their Music @ www. shala.com, or at Amazon.
Again making music with his friends, including members of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Paul McCartney and Wings, Allen has managed to create something brand new out of music that seems familiar. It’s a neat trick, and it’s part of the reason why the music of Downtown Mystic has been heard on over 8000 radio stations worldwide!

DR. DAVE’S Top DVD’s 1) Iron Man 3 In which Robert Downey Jr. saves the world again - the film is directed by Shane Black, whose Kiss Kiss Bang Bang from 2005 is highly recommended - this effort? Almost as good....Buy it! 2) Turbo A snail decides to race in the Indy 500. Watchable, with great graphics, and the voice cast (led by Ryan Reynolds) is topnotch, but this flick is nowhere as good as it could have been. Not that kids will care...Rent it! 3) Grown Ups 2 So obvious - if you like Adam Sandler, you will love this film. If you don’t, you won’t. By the way, Sandler is now worth an estimated 38 million dollars. Apparently, stupid pays well. Your choice... 4) 2 Guns Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are terrific together in this film that works well as both an action flick and a character study - well done! Rent it! 5) Planes Forget about Cars 2 - this is the Pixar film that should have served as the Cars sequel. Few saw it in theatres - grab it and give your kids a treat. Rent it!
- and one more -
6) We’re The Millers Jason Sudeikis moves from Saturday Night Live to the big screen with this far from superior comedy that is funnier and more enjoyable than you might expect. Rent it! 38

Over 200 people attended the first ever Salvation Army Soup Off, held at Haywoods On The Green on Wednesday, November 6th. Six area restaurants showcased their soups: Aungst Family Restaurant - Bacon Cheeseburger Soup; Beech Creek Furst Corner – Potato Soup; Curt’s Smokin Ribs - Chicken & Sausage Gumbo; Dutch Haven Restaurant – Chicken Corn Chowder; Haywood’s On The Green – Wisconsin Cheddar Soup; and Stella A’s Restaurant- Pork Broccoli Rabe Soup. Congratulations to The Dutch Haven Restaurant, winner of the 2013 Golden Ladle Award, for the best soup in town with their Chicken Corn Chowder Soup entry. Many people commented that it was a very difficult decision on which soup to vote for, as they were all superb! The Soup Off owes its success to event sponsors: Bear Country Radio, Haywood’s On The Green, The Lock Haven Express, the businesses that sponsored an ad in the program booklet, and all the individuals who attended. Health ... Health ... Health .... Health .... Heath ... Health
To your Health!
Gluten-Free Holidays
Health ... Health ... Health .... Health .... Heath ... Health
Timely, helpful, and realistic info you can apply to improve your life through better health!
Christmas is on the way! Some of you may be approaching the holidays with a bit (or a lot) of fear and trepidation. Food is a huge part of holidays, whether it is family gatherings, office parties, or a special meal for you and your immediate family. If you are on a special diet of any kind, these occasions can be a real challenge. With that in mind, here are some helpful holiday tips. These tips are geared towards food and eating, but don’t forget that your relationships with family and friends really are the most important part of the holidays. Food is quickly consumed, and then it’s gone. Relationships are lasting. Try to focus on time with people, and the food might not seem so important. 1. Plan. Plan. Plan. Yes, it used to be so much easier, didn’t it? You probably had to do some planning then, but now you have to do a lot. If you are one of those people who really doesn’t care much about food, then you can get away with minimal planning, but if food is important, you have to plan. 2. Communicate and Educate. This is best done ahead of time (hence the planning point). If you will be eating at someone else’s home or a restaurant, talk to the cook (or cooks) ahead of time. Let them know of your diet restrictions, and find out if anything they are making is gluten-free or could easily be made so. Most people don’t mind using corn starch to thicken gravy instead of flour, but they won’t do it if they don’t know. Educate them on cross contamination and the need for clean surfaces, utensils, bowls, pans, etc. Communicate nicely, and don’t expect them to make everything gluten-free. 3. Contribute to the Meal. You might want to contribute to the main meal and the dessert, so you have something you are sure is safe for both. Desserts in particular often contain gluten, but gluten-free desserts are just as delicious and can be enjoyed by all. 4. Bring Your Own Food. In addition to contributing food for everyone, you may want to bring something just for you. If attending a holiday party, bringing your own crackers could be helpful, or maybe you will want to take your own stuffing or dinner roll. 5. Prepare and Freeze Food in Advance. It’s no fun to be stressed out over food when you should be enjoying the holiday. If you plan ahead and know what foods you want to have for particular occasions, many of those foods can be prepared and frozen. I have made multiple pumpkin rolls and frozen them a couple of weeks before holidays. 6. Oversee Food Preparation. You can’t do this in every situation, but you often can. If the event is at your home, of course, this is easy. But even at a family member’s home, you can often work with the cook to make sure contamination is avoided. 7. Watch Out for Contamination When Food is Served. Your efforts to keep something gluten-free while it is being cooked can be totally destroyed by crumbs from rolls or a serving utensil that is used for the stuffing, then dipped into the green beans. 8. Get Your Food First. I know this can seem a bit awkward, but getting your food first can ensure that it stays uncontaminated from situations like I mentioned in number seven above. Take as much as you think you will want and don’t go back for seconds. 9. Set Food Aside. Hold back some food from the serving dishes so that all of it doesn’t risk contamination. That way you can enjoy some of the leftovers, too. 10. Smile. Smile. Smile. Even if you don’t feel like it. Smiling will enhance your mood and help you feel less stressed. Reflect on how much better you feel being on a gluten-free diet. Remember that a diet change is better than taking medications. Enjoy your gluten-free food, and treasure your relationships. - info from glutenfreehomemaker.com

Sleep Tips for Kids of All Ages
Sleep has a big impact on health. Kids and teens need enough sleep to help them grow, ward off sickness, think clearly, and remember things, and fend off bad moods. Though it’s still being studied, getting enough sleep has other clear roles in helping kids stay fit. Kids and teens who are well-rested are more likely to have the energy needed for exercise and being active. Additionally, getting enough sleep can help your child learn better and have better memory. When you’ve gotten enough sleep -- no matter what your age -- you’re also more likely to make healthy eating choices. When you’re well-rested, you can remember your healthy eating goals and have the energy to follow through by taking the extra moment to choose nutritious food. It’s up to you as a parent to encourage enough sleep for kids to help keep them healthy, active, and happy. The trick is to know how much sleep kids need, based on their ages. Sleep needs vary from child to child, but the following are general guidelines from the National Sleep Foundation: 1 to 2 months old: 10 1/2 to 18 hours per day 3 to 11 months old: 9 to 12 hours per day 1 to 3 years old: 12 to 14 hours per day 3 to 5 years old: 11 to 13 hours per day 5 to 12 years old: 10 to 11 hours per day 12 to 18 years old: at least 8 1/2 hours per day If your child needs sleep help, the good news is that parent interventions are almost always effective. Here are some tried-and-true methods to ease the way to sleep for kids:
Power down. Turn off electronics at least one hour before bedtime, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. If your child has a TV in her bedroom, seriously consider moving it out. Research shows that kids who have a television in their bedrooms tend to sleep less. Create a calming nighttime routine. Winding down each night with the same calm routine -- bath, book, tooth brushing -- signals that it’s time for sleep, especially for younger children and kids who have more than one home. Be consistent with bedtime and rising. Don’t relax sleep rules on weekends or for homework. Enforce naps in younger children. Keeping a nap routine, without allowing sleep too late in the day, can help keep night sleep on track. Promote physical activity and exercise. Kids who are more physically active during the day take less time to fall asleep, sleep longer, and seem to have a deeper sleep. Watch for cues. An extra busy day can make your child feel ready for bed earlier. Watch for that and go with the flow, keeping in mind that signals of drowsiness vary, especially among children. Don’t give up. If sleeping problems persist, consult your pediatrician or a sleep specialist to check for potential underlying physiological problems, such as sleep-related breathing disorders or iron deficiency. Even sleepers with the toughest problems can learn good habits.

A Glimpse
from the Past...
This old gem is a ‘64 Chevrolet Greenbrier Sportswagon, spotted in Bellefonte. A Corvair truck could be ordered as a “Loadside” or “Rampside.” The Loadside was essentially a pickup truck with a standard tail gate. The Loadside was only produced two years and is the rarest of the Corvairs. The Rampside had a side ramp to be used for loading and unloading cargo. The sportswagons were just on the market from ‘61 - ‘65 and were a limited success, but passenger vans would continue to evolve through full-sized vans.

Ask Greta
Dear Greta, I’m a 36-year-old guy who’s dated some great women, but ended most of my relationships around the six month mark. I wasn’t concerned about this until I was talking about how cool my girlfriend of two months is, and my married buddy looked at his watch and said, “Yeah, bummer. Only got four more months of her.” I had a long relationship in my 20’s, so I don’t think I fear intimacy or commitment. Do I need therapy? Or is this one of those things where, if I’m happy, the relationship might last longer than six months? - The Transient Dear Mr. Transient, Do you look deep into a woman’s eyes and whisper those magical words, “I want to spend the rest of my month with you?” Well, long-term relationships aren’t for everyone. Along with the benefits come the tradeoffs, like having to give up the suspense and buzz of the new for the comfortable old slipper of stability. It’s okay to be unwilling to make that tradeoff, provided you aren’t just covering for a bunch of unexplored fears. The problem comes in letting women believe that you have the potential to be Mr. Right, when you’re most likely Mr. Lite. Unfortunately, some will see your pattern of succumbing to Restless Boyfriend Syndrome as a challenge to domesticate you. To keep things from getting ugly, you might gently remind them that you’re looking to be there for them in good times and good times -- and that someday their prince will run.
