a BIG thank you
to ... Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology Discover A World of Opportunity for donating your time and skills to build a new addition for Bear Country’s Christmas Wish donations! We’ve needed more space for years, especially around the holidays, when generous contributions took up most of the floor space in our sales office! When vaulting over toys and storage crates to get to the copy machine started to get a little too challenging, we finally started talking seriously about expanding. Mentioning our dilemma to Lauren Wright of LHU’s Mountain Serve, she introduced us to her husband Darrin, an instructor at CPI in Bellefonte. He and his students took on our project, and helped make one of our very own Christmas Wishes come true - more space to store and organize our Christmas Wish donations! They did an awesome job! We are as grateful to them for all of their efforts as we are to all the wonderful people who have helped us make dreams come true for families in need for the past 21 years! Children Waiting For A Home...
James, 12, loves to share smiles and giggles with those he knows and feels comfortable with. Diagnosed with autism, James is non-verbal and communicates mainly by using gestures such as pointing, reaching, and touching others to express his wants and needs. He is able to follow some simple, familiar directions and to make choices by grabbing items or pushing them away. In school, James receives special education services and benefits from the small class size and individual attention. He also participates in physical, speech and occupational therapies to increase his skills. James needs a supportive and encouraging family that will give him the special attention he requires. He needs to feel secure and to be a part of a stable family that will love him unconditionally throughout his life .

Infiniti, 12, is passionate about dancing. She especially enjoys hip hop and likes to choreograph her own routines. Infiniti hopes to pursue a career involving music, as a dancer or choreographer, or perhaps as an agent or manager. She also is very interested in fashion and takes great pride in the way she dresses. Infiniti has her own style and feels that everyone should be their own person. She is considering the possibility of becoming a fashion designer. Very social, Infiniti enjoys talking to people, especially when the conversation is about choreography, music, fashion design, movies, or books. Infiniti wants very much to be adopted. Her ideal family would include a mom and a dad, other children and a pet. She hopes for a family that will love her and appreciate her for who she is.

Mikal has definite plans for his future. Although the 17 year old enjoys cooking, baking, and reading, his greatest interest is fashion and he is constantly dreaming up new designs. He envisions a career in the fashion world. Talented and imaginative, he is working on a fashion show at his school involving recycled projects. Another goal for Mikal is to be a LGBT rights activist. He says that it is important for him to know at the end of the day that he has reached and helped as many people as he can. Mikal’s foremost goal for the present is to find a permanent family. “No matter how old you are, it is important to have a family because if you don’t, at the end of the day you might wonder who is going to remember you,“ he says. “Family is there for you when you need them.”
Mikal
There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works. For more information contact Crystal Allen at the National Adoption Center. Email: callen@adopt.org or call 267-443-1867.
National Adoption Center • 1500 Walnut Street, Suite 701 • Philadelphia, PA 19102 1-800-TO-ADOPT www.adopt.org The National Adoption Center is a private, non-profit organization that expands adoption opportunities for children throughout the United States, particularly for children with special needs and those from minority cultures.

P.E.A.K. Students at CMHS
P.E.A.K. stands for Positive attitude, Encouraging others, Academics, and Kindness. Every other week, 10 teachers are randomly selected to nominate one students who exemplifies these qualities. Nominated students receive rewards for a week long period that includes: a free pass to all CMHS athletic events, a pass to get to the front of the lunch line, the ability to come into school at 9:00 on an extended homeroom day, and a preferred parking spot. The purpose of P.E.A.K. is to recognize and reward students making a positive contribution to Central Mountain High School.
Congratulations to last month’s P.E.A.K. Students!
Alyssa Brininger Alyssa Brininger is a senior at Central Mountain High School. When she’s not in school, you can find Brininger out in the woods hunting with her dad, spending time with her friends and family, or working at McDonalds. She is a very hard-working, passionate, sweet girl with a positive, happy-go-lucky attitude. She loves hunting, but has yet to shoot a deer. Brininger was nominated for PEAK by her construction trades teacher, Mr. Bill Probst. Probst says, “Alyssa makes a good effort and is willing to help others.”
Dakota Swartwood Dakota Swartwood mostly works in his spare time at the Original Italian Pizza in Mill Hall as cook. Dakota says his grades are outstanding and have improved a great deal. He is a little surprised that he was being nominated for PEAK, but he was also really excited! Dakota is currently taking welding classes for his future plans on the Gas Line. He loves outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing! He was nominated by Mrs. Jodie Miller, who said, “He is kind, enthusiastic about the course, and is helpful to all students. He chips in to do dishes if someone is behind and is an all around good guy.” Marissa Martin Junior Marissa Martin was chosen to be a PEAK student by Mr. Temple, because “She’s always on task, upbeat, and helping students around her,” says Temple. Marissa enjoys hanging out with her friends, and she spends much of her free time practicing majorettes. Her favorite privilege is getting a parking permit to park in whichever lot she wants. Monika Yerke Freshman Monika Yerke enjoys hanging out with friends outside of school. She thinks that she was nominated because of her hard work in all her classes. Yerke was nominated by art teacher Kraig Brady. Brady nominated her because of the kindness that she shows to others in class, in addition to all her hard work in school! Kayla Courter Nominated PEAK student Kayla Courter, 11th grade, works at The Cottage Restaurant in Lamar. Her mother owns the restaurant, and she has been a helping at the Cottage since she was ten years old! Kayla’s favorite subject is Culinary Arts, and she is thinking about going into culinary for a career. Kayla’s favorite teacher, Ms. Hack, is the one who nominated her for this award. According to Ms. Hack, “Kayla is always respectful and kind to other students. She has stayed after school to help me clean up from labs and to deliver flowers. This year in FFA, Kayla has sold hundreds of dollars worth of fruit, and competed in a Career Development event she has never tried before.” 18

Courtney Poorman Junior Courtney Poorman was chosen for the PEAK award for being an overall outstanding student in school. Courtney plays softball for the Central Mountain Lady Wildcats, and she also likes to play for outside school teams. She likes to sing and hang out with friends during her free time. Courtney also sang in the school choir her past two years of school. She was awarded PEAK by Mr. Nines for being a great student in class and around the school.
Gage Riggle Gage Riggle is a junior at Central Mountain High School. His favorite class is automotive repair. He was nominated for PEAK by art teacher Kraig Brady because he is a good, hard-working student. Outside of school, Gage enjoys motocross racing. He has been racing for a long time and plans to continue doing so. Seth Shade Seth Shade was happy to be informed that he was chosen as one of the PEAK students this past week. Seth hunts, drives tractors, and milks cows in his free time. His favorite subject in school is math, and his favorite teacher is Mrs. Rainey. “She’s really funny,” says Seth. He was nominated by Building Assistant Judy Walker because, “He is courteous, has nice manners, is thoughtful and good with his peers and staff. He is altogether a nice boy.” Gabrielle “Elly” Weaver Gabrielle “Elly” Weaver was nominated as a PEAK student. She is a member of the varsity cheerleading squad, dance team, and band where she plays the flute. She was very surprised to be nominated for PEAK. She was nominated by Mrs. Kelly Baker, who said, “She is an academically strong student, but more importantly she is always positive, outgoing, and kind to others.” Josh Young Josh Young was nominated for PEAK by Mr. Kraig Brady. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his friends. Josh wasn’t expecting this, but he thought he deserved the award because he works well with other students. Mr. Brady agrees, and that is why Josh was nominated. Librarian Carrie Toner The PEAK teacher for December is Librarian Carrie Toner. Mrs. Toner was the librarian at BEN for 16 years, and was also a reading teacher at CMMS for 13 years. Mrs. Toner enjoys walking and reading. Her favorite book is Lord of the Flies. She was nominated by Assistant Principal Steven Turchetta because, “Carrie is always willing to lend a helping hand to students, faculty, and administrators. Carrie has a positive attitude and greets everyone with a smile. Carrie has been a great addition to the CMHS staff.”

Brand New YOU
Well, another Christmas is in the books and along with that, another year. Wow, did 2013 fly by or what? 2014 is upon us, with all its possibilities, promise, and potential for problems. I look forward to the coming of a New Year. I like the opportunity to start new and fresh and the New Year is always such a good time to begin again. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 says this: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to Godself through Christ and gave us a ministry of reconciliation…..” What a promise! We can be made brand new. That means all the stuff that we aren’t real proud of that happened last year is gone. The Old has passed away, never to be remembered again. That is the promise of God through the Son Jesus Christ. We get a do-over. We have been reconciled. According to the Miriam-Webster dictionary, reconciled means to restore to friendship or harmony. God restores us to the right relationship that leads to a life that God desires each one of us to have. A life of peace and joy. A life filled with God’s love and mercy. God wants to restore harmony in our lives through good relationships. God not only desires a good relationship with us, God desires for us to have good relationships with each other, to be reconciled with our brothers and sisters, neighbors and all those around us. As we begin this brand new year, will you be reconciled to a God who loves you? And will you, because you have been made new, be reconciled to those around you? God Bless each of you. Happy New Year to a New YOU!

Inspired by the music of the 60’s and 70’s, but rooted in today that’s the best description yet of Downtown Mystic, the group led by guitarist Robert Allen.
Find out More about Downtown Mystic and Buy Their Music @ www. shala.com, or at Amazon.
Again making music with his friends, including members of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Paul McCartney and Wings, Allen has managed to create something brand new out of music that seems familiar. It’s a neat trick, and it’s part of the reason why the music of Downtown Mystic has been heard on over 8000 radio stations worldwide!

What to Expect with a by Dr. Sherry Cokefair, VMD, New Puppy or Kitten Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic
Along with basic supplies, pets also need vaccinations and checkups, which can add quite a bit to the bill. The first year is usually the most expensive, because you typically have a series of vaccinations, as well as an office call with each of those exams. When someone buys a new puppy or kitten, they should bring it to the veterinarian as soon as possible to get its first check up and vaccinations. The ideal time is when the animal is about 8 weeks old. During the first visit, the pet dog or cat will receive a checkup and vaccinations. The pet should be vaccinated at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks. Basically, vaccinate from the time they’re 6 to 8 weeks of age, until they turn at least 16 weeks of age. At 16 weeks, if they’ve had vaccinations every 3 or 4 weeks, they should be done with vaccinations for the year. The main vaccination is a DA2PP, which protects against common canine illnesses and infections. An additional vaccine is recommended to protect against Bordetella, or kennel cough, if the dog will be interacting with others. The final vaccine protects against rabies, and is required yearly to every three years--depending upon your jurisdiction. On top of that, spaying or neutering at the four to six month mark is recommended. TIMELINE OF VETERINARIAN VISITS 8 weeks: First checkup and vaccinations 12 weeks: Second set of vaccinations 16 weeks: Final set of vaccinations and rabies vaccination 4-6 months: Spaying or neutering www.bear999.com

Just a Few of The Best Fitness Tips
• Consistency is the key to success. A workout here or there is going to get you nowhere. Lay out a plan & execute it every single time. • Cook your meals in advance. It makes it easier to stick to your diet plan when you only have to reheat and eat. • Add lemon, lime, orange, or cucumber to your water. It adds flavor without the calories. • There are 1000 reasons why you can’t start a fitness program. Put the excuses away, drop the word can’t, and focus on reasons why you should. • No time to work out? Set your alarm to wake you up 30 minutes earlier. Make exercise a priority and part of your everyday routine. • Don’t be afraid to eat carbs. They (glucose) are the brain’s primary source of fuel, and your body’s energy source for high-intensity exercise. Focus on eating low-glycemic carbs for a slow and steady release of glucose. • Set goals. Don’t just wing it. Decide on a realistic amount of weight to lose in a particular time (1-2 pounds per week, or better yet, .5-1% body fat per week). First, decide on a big goal (lose 25 lbs. in 4 months). Then, divide that up into several smaller goals (lose 8 pounds this month). Each time you reach your smaller goal, it gives you the motivation and confidence to continue on. Start small, and eventually the weight loss will add up. • Your first meal after your workout is the most important. Make the most of it by giving your muscles all they need to rebuild bigger and stronger. For this meal, take advantage of your improved insulin sensitivity, and eat the majority of the day’s allotment of carbs in order to replenish muscle glycogen stores - aim for 1/4th of your lean body weight in protein grams. • For your workouts, start with your most difficult compound exercise first. A compound exercise recruits a high number of muscle fibers at one time, and should be a priority in every workout. Make sure you are doing at least one of them in every workout. Examples include – bench press, squats, deadlifts, rows, pull-ups, pushups, and variations thereof. • Losing weight is just as much of (if not more of) a mental challenge than a physical one. If you can take control of your mind and body, the weight loss will follow. • Start your diet today – not tomorrow, not Monday. Don’t rationalize your bad eating habits. Today is going to be a great day. Say goodbye to unhealthy food and start right now. • Your workouts should take no more than 45 minutes to complete. The longer your workout goes, the greater the increase in negative side effects (injuries, hormones, etc). • Keep your house empty of bad food. If you want to lose weight, don’t tempt fate by filling your pantry with unhealthy food. If you buy it, chances are Info retrieved online at: you’ll eat it. www.coachcalorie.com/daily-tips/

To your Health!
Timely, helpful, and realistic info you can apply to improve your life through better health!
Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions: Healthy Diet Tips ☑ Don’t skip breakfast - It’ll energize you for the day and keep your diet in check. ☑ Nibble, don’t gobble - Use the three-bite rule with dessert: Have three small bites and put your fork down. ☑ Avoid late-night snacks - Finish eating three hours before bedtime. Your metabolism slows down when you sleep, so you shift from fat burning to fat storage. ☑ Don’t skimp on sleep - Get six to eight hours of sleep a night. ☑ Start with greens - Eat in the right order. Eat vegetables first to naturally have more of them and ultimately eat fewer calories. ☑ Snack away - Eat every three to four hours so you’ll be equipped to say no to temptations. ☑ Schedule a cheat day - Resist cravings by postponing indulging to a future day when you’re free to eat whatever you want. ☑ Say no to soda - Regular soda drinking may make muscles less likely to burn fat. ☑ Fill up on fiber and protein - Enjoy so many nonstarchy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins that you’re too full for anything else. ☑ Skip the salt and fizz - Cut sodium and carbonation! Carbonation can bloat your stomach, making it appear distended for hours, or even days! Sodium holds onto fluid. ☑ Use the apple test - If you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, you’re not hungry. ☑ Have a carb-free afternoon - No carbs after lunch is one of the hardest rules to follow. But if you follow this rule YOU WILL lose weight. ☑ Do the math - Add a zero to your weight and use that to figure how many calories you should have if Info retrieved online at: www.health.com/ you’re moderately active. health/gallery/0,,20645166_26,00.html

Pros & Cons of Kids Having Cell Phones
You likely never had the option of owning a cell phone as a child, but your kids will likely have a large majority of their classmates who have a phone of their own. The decorative covers and phones that come in a rainbow of colors fuel a child’s desire to have one of his/her own. Weighing the pros and cons of a cell phone helps you decide if it’s time to add your child to the family cell phone plan. Safety - A cell phone gives your child a way to get help quickly if he/she has an emergency when on their own. If your child is rarely alone, a cell phone for emergencies isn’t usually a necessity. A child who walks by his/herself or stays at home alone until parents get home is a prime candidate for a phone - especially if you no longer have a land line phone in your house. If he/she gets hurt or is approached by someone, he/she can call 911. He/She can call you if someone knocks on the door while home alone. Access - When your child keeps a cell phone with him/her, you have instant access to them at all times. As your child gains independence, you might allow him/her to go to a friend’s house after school or participate in extracurricular activities. Even though he/she is becoming more responsible, you still need to know where they are. With one call or text to his/her cell phone, you find out if he/she is safe and if they are where they said they would be. Your child can also reach you if he/she is at school or another location where there aren’t public phones available. When he/she needs a ride or needs to let you know where they are, the cell phone becomes a convenient accessory. Dangers - Despite the safety benefits, cell phones also come with certain dangers that put your child at risk. Phones are often a distraction for kids, causing them to pay little attention to what’s going on around them. If your child is texting or playing a game while he/she walks home from school, they may walk in front of a car or not notice that someone is following him/her. With social media access on many phones, your child is exposed to cyberbullying. He/She may also reveal their location without realizing it because of location-sharing apps. Some parents also worry about the radiation exposure with cell phone use. The research is limited on how those radio waves affect people, but parents often worry about an increased risk of tumors. Sedentary Activities - Many cell phones come with games and Internet access. While entertaining and appealing to kids, those activities encourage your child to be sedentary. Sitting around playing cell phone games isn’t a healthy way for your child to spend his/her time. He/She misses out on valuable active play time. Keeping games and Internet access off the phone is an option that allows your child to make calls without too much sedentary time. Cost - An additional cell phone in the house means a higher cell phone bill to fit into your budget. Most cell phone companies offer family plans that help you control costs, but you will have to share minutes and text message packages with your child. If he/she’s only using the phone for emergencies or to keep in touch with you, the sharing of minutes shouldn’t be an issue, but a child who is a social butterfly can quickly burn through minutes. Exceeding the monthly limit adds extra charges. If your child doesn’t take care of his/her Info retrieved online at: http://everydaylife.globalpost.com/ cell phone, you could have the added expense of buying a new one. pros-cons-kids-having-mobile-phones-18406.html

Battle of The Sexes Dear Battle of the Sexes: Well, the holidays are over and now we have to live like paupers for the next three months! My wife is Mrs. Generosity, but now our family has to pay for it! She spends so much money on her friends and relatives that we actually have to turn down the heat and wear three sweaters around the house, and she freaks out if we leave the lights on when we’re not in the room. It’s ridiculous. Most of the gifts she buys are for older people, and I’ve suggested we draw names and take turns buying for people, but she thinks we would look cheap for suggesting it. I don’t care! It’s better than listening to her bark at us until the credit card is paid off! - Tired of being Mr. Generosity Dear Battle of the Sexes: I love my husband dearly, but there is one thing he does that drives me nuts. Well, maybe a few things, but the one I’m talking about is he leaves a square or two of the toilet tissue on the roll so he doesn’t have to change it. I swear, I don’t think he has ever changed a toilet tissue roll since we have been married. I mean, how hard is it? - Anonymous, Williamsport

Ask Greta
Dear Greta, I’m going to propose to my girlfriend, and it seems there’s this trend of doing crazy, elaborate things to ask a girl to marry you. I know I can’t compete with the guys like the New York City dude I just read about who threw down $45,000 to pop the question. But even if friends help me out for free, I don’t know whether I can make my proposal cool enough to go viral like the Portland guy who had his choreographed and filmed. - Don’t Want To Disappoint Dear Mr. Don’t Want To Disappoint, “Will you marry me?” is a pretty powerful question. Asking this of a woman who loves you can provoke tears, and not because you didn’t hire Beyonce to sing “Put A Ring On It,” and spend a year training a humpback whale to swim by at exactly the right moment and shoot the ring out its blowhole. Put your effort into telling your girlfriend why you always want to be there to hold her hand, even when it gets all wrinkly. Couple that with an essential element from the elaborate proposers -- delighting a woman with the element of surprise. You can do this by planning your proposal around something your girlfriend once said (and will be amazed you remembered) or just by serving her toast a slightly different way: with a heart cut in the middle with the ring inside it. This sort of proposal sends a message -- “I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you” (not to be confused with “Bet I can get more YouTube hits than that big dog teaching the puppy to go down the stairs!”).
