over 100 guests meant that certain venues we liked were initially ruled out as they seem to only do weddings for around 70/ 80, whilst that would be ideal there was no way we could cut our numbers that much unfortunately. So it was back to the drawing board and then where in the UK? I wanted to get married in Wales being welsh and all that! Your

Wedding Dress Before you go shopping, think about who to take with you. If you prefer to shop alone normally then remember that your wedding dress is probably the most important outfit you’ll ever buy and the opinion of a trusted friend could be invaluable. Your mum and your bridesmaids will be the obvious choice but try not to take too many people, everyone will probably have an opinion and it could get more confusing than ever! Think about what your day will involve.

Make-up Your Wedding Day

This wedding season is all about fresh, clean faces with a sweep of subtle colour on the lips and a flushed look on the cheeks. The eyes are very natural mainly bronze, beige, nude and sometimes a light pink. As for lips the world is your oyster, colours that go well with this nude look are bright or bold colours anything from red to berry red.

F

or the make-up featured I found it very important to get a really good base to start off with and it helps if your skin is in tip top condition before you start. Before applying makeup always make sure that your skin is cleansed, toned and moisturised. Then apply a primer, this helps the make-up last longer. Then you can apply foundation etc, I also cheated that fab glow by using a glow enhancer, there are loads of cosmetic companies that do it and all you have to do is go to the counter and ask the consultant to try some on you. I think it is very important to try products before you buy as just seeing the products in their containers and liking the colour is completely different to how it reacts with your own skin texture and colour. If you are not sure about which colours or textures suit you, why not look for a local make-up artist who can give you either a group lesson or a one on one lesson on what would work for you. As for hair, a revival of the 50’s and 60’s seem to be hitting big. Ranging from stylish beehives, audrey style bun’s and lots of adaptations. They are also very easy to do all you need is to practice and have some patience. If you don’t know what to do you could always book a session with a stylist to show you and then ask them what they’re doing so you can try at home. How we met:

My first day at City Hospital, Birmingham was a cold and wet one in February 2005. As the new medical photographer on the team I was shadowing one of my colleagues for the day to learn the ropes. Our first port of call was Ophthalmology, diabetic screening clinic. Who would have thought this would be the place where love blossomed! I was introduced the member of staff I would be work-

ing with every Tuesday, Tim. We worked together for quite a while until we found out that we liked each other, as both of us were convinced that the other wouldn’t be interested. We finally got together in the August of 2005. After both getting new jobs and relocating we moved in together in February 2007. In late 2008 we had some bad news when Tim was diagnosed with cancer. He was lucky, the cancer was caught very early and has never returned, hooray! After this we wanted to start a family, as we know life can be short. In June 2010 we were lucky enough to have our son, Elliott. Unfortunately eight months later I myself was diagnosed with cancer. I had just had my first lot of chemotherapy and was feeling really ropey, however it was my first mother’s day that week, so Tim suggested we went to Lake Vyrnwy for a picnic as it is a special

R eal W eddings

place for us. Once we found a quiet parking spot next to the lake Tim started to act a bit odd. I now know why he was acting so odd, he was massively nervous. Tim then got down on one knee and proposed, and Elliott passed me a Welsh love spoon that Tim had been carving in secret (he told me he had been clearing out the garage!). I of course said yes. Lake Vyrnwy is a special place as it is where my Grandparent’s got engaged 80 years earlier. After two operations, loads of chemo’ and 30 sessions of radiotherapy I have been cancer free since October 2011. It was the day after the ‘all clear’ that operation wedding was put into action!

How we prepared for the wedding:

We knew exactly where we wanted to get married. Our first date together was on the beach outside St George’s Hotel. We both love the area and only have ace memories of the place. To us anywhere else just wouldn’t have made sense. So we booked the 19th of May with Natasha, one of the wedding planners at St George’s. Once we had a date booked I zoomed off to Cambric Gowns to get a dress sorted. I met a couple of the ladies from Cambric Gowns at a wedding fayre at the St George’s a few months before. They were so helpful that day and throughout the whole process. For hair and flowers I asked Natasha at St George’s whether she could recommend flowers and hairdressers as though we live in North Wales we are not local

to Llandudno, so thought it would be sensible to use people local to the venue. Natasha at St George’s was/ is awesome at her job. I used everybody that she suggested and they were all brilliant. Invitations, menus, etc (all wedding stationary) I designed. Part of my job at the hospital includes graphic design so it made sense to me to design what we wanted to fit in with our wedding. Tim’s mum used to make wedding cakes professionally and has made all of her children’s wedding cakes, so that was a good money saver too! For the drinks reception we hired a jazz band called the Deeside Dixies. We hired them as we saw this band play on our first date, cheesy I know, but they are awesome! Music during the ceremony was performed by our friends; music during food was harp music by Sian, supplied by the hotel. We had a free DJ for the evening do, again supplied by the hotel. Without trying to sound smug we didn’t have any problems preparing for the wedding everything went really smoothly, we have been really lucky. Any questions/queries I had at the time were all sorted by Natasha at St George’s (I can’t praise Natasha enough; she is so good at what she does).

How the big day went:

The wedding itself went brilliantly, of course I am biased. We both stayed in the same hotel the night before, in separate rooms, so we didn’t have to worry

R eal W eddings

about getting stuck in traffic to the venue. Flowers arrived in plenty of time. Laura from beautiful you Wales arrived nice and early and started work on the flower girls and maid of honour, while I fiddled nervously about the suite! We got married in the Conwy Suite which had been dressed beautifully. Drinks reception was then in the restaurant that looks out to sea. Having a drink listening to the Deeside Dixies, ace! We of course then went off with Ioan and Nicola from Celynnen photography for our photos. I really want it to be known if possible how good these guys are. Though a photographer myself, we work in very different areas, and though a photographer I am very nervous in front of the camera (much prefer hiding behind it!). I don’t know how they did it but I was not nervous at all, they have a very calming effect! For the rest of the day we were not aware of them being there, which I think is nice, especially for the guests as they were saying how they were not aware that their photo was being taken. We have seen our photos and they are just awesome. We then went onto the Wedding breakfast in the Wedgewood suite. Food throughout the day was just brilliant, everybody raved about the food. I didn’t eat much as I was talking too much, but what I had was perfect! The night do was perfect; the DJ that St George’s supplied played lots of songs that we had asked for. We had a simply fantastic day. The following days we kept finding ourselves in a daze not talking to each

other as we were just reliving the wedding day, sad I know!

Lasting memories and advice:

Lasting memories of the big day was probably seeing each other for the first time that day and having all of our family and friends there to witness it. I think the ring exchange, for us, was a big thing, and recessing to ‘bring me sunshine’ was one of our most favourite moments. Speech time of course was fun. The best man Steffan did an awesome speech, he did us proud! The whole day was just one massive happy memory; we are lucky, lucky people. Advice. The day itself goes by so fast. I felt like I hadn’t spoken to anyone as it was such a whirlwind. Do not worry about this, having spoke to friends about this subject they have all experienced the same. Make sure you have a good photographer, especially if you get nervous! If your venue offers a wedding co-ordinator as ours did, use them. Natasha was an absolute star and helped us a lot. Finally just enjoy the day. Everyone at your wedding is there because you want them to be there, and they want to be there to share in your happy day. So long as you know that then nothing can spoil your day!

n terms of the all important wedding cake, most of us imagine the traditional tiered fruitcake with white icing. While this traditional wedding cake remains popular, there are plenty of others to choose from. A cupcake wedding cake is increasingly popular and means that you can give each guest their very own individual cake. You may even decide to ice names on each cake and use them as place cards!

Favours Melys Wedding

It has become very fashionable for Brides to give their guests a small gift, a “Wedding Favour” to celebrate their wedding day. The gift is said to represent, wealth, happiness, fertility and long life. Honey also has a long association with marriage, it is said that the happy couple would eat honey for a month after their wedding, hence Honeymoon. So what could be a better gift to give your guests than a small pot of “Melys Honey”. We know that Wedding Favours are only a small part of the celebration, but we understand how important it is to get the detail right. We make all our favours ourselves from start to finish therefore seeing the whole process through and ensuring you get exactly what you required. We pride ourselves on our service and enjoy what we do. We are very happy to make up bespoke orders, so that you can have a unique gift that compliments your wedding

theme and colours. Our photographs show a selection of what we do and can be bought in our Etsy shop, if you would like a bespoke order please contact us and we will get back to you, or please go to the website below and send me a message through the secure website. www.etsy.com/shop/melyshoney Our mini jars, contain 1.5 ounces of “Melys Honey”, pure unheated, untreated raw honey that has just been filtered to ensure it reaches you in the best possible condition. The jars are then decorated by hand to create an original, elegant favour that will look gorgeous on your tables and wow your guests.

Transport Your Wedding Day

Firstly, have a think about the distance you will need to travel to and from your venue when deciding on your type of transport.

As you will no doubt be aware, there are many different forms of transport to choose from. Traditionally there are two cars required, one for the bride and father of the bride, and one for the

mother of the bride and bridesmaids. The best man is charged with getting the Groom to the venue.

Capturing

your day... I mages last a lifetime so it’s always advisable to use professionals, don’t be tempted to let a friend capture your day, you may just regret it. Experienced professionals have the right equipment and know how best to capture those special moments. For any couple looking to book a photographer for their big day, one of the first questions you need to ask yourself is what style of wedding photography you would like. Getting to know and getting on with your photographer of choice is important as you will be spending a lot of time with them on the day. Having that bond or connection with the photographer can put you at ease and the end results will be more relaxed and genuine.

R eal W eddings

Congratulations to the happy couple -

Natalie & James James and I got engaged on Christmas Day 2008 and were married on 1st August 2009. I found it quite easy to plan the wedding even though we only had 7 months to organise it and had nearly 200 guests in the day and a further 100 in the evening. We used a free website www.momentville.com to get all the information out to the guests, our attempt to be eco friendly! We got married at 11am in St Marys Church in Ruabon as all of James’s family had been christened and married there. The church wasn’t as helpful as they could be but on the day, we had a different vicar and he was hilarious. We asked our friends and family for help with the wedding and we were able to save loads of money whilst still having a special and memorable day, as so many people joined in, even a few days before the wedding when we were dressing the marquee, around 25 people came and gave us a hand.

Our wedding was a real example of everyone being made to work for their supper! One of our groomsmen’s dad played the organ for the service hymns and one of our good friends played the piano in Church and for my entrance. I chose the PM’s love theme from Love Actually. We had loads of fun trying to find songs that could be played on the piano, we choose lots of silly songs to keep the guests amused whilst they were waiting for us to sign the register. We had organised and paid for a coach to pick people up from Wrexham at 10am and then after the wedding, we sent all our guests to the Wynnstay Pub while we had our pictures taken, then they were bussed to the Trevor Barn for the reception. That worked really well as loads of our guests we by the windonws waving and having a good time and it really started the party atmosphere off. James is in a Wedding Functions and Cover band called The Big Beat so the band played with extra

R eal W eddings friends pitching in with their musical talents. My favourite part was when our friend Steff sang ‘No Easy Way Out’ for me from Rocky. Our friend Emma is a photographer and she kindly offered her services and got some amazing pictures even though we didnt decide on any specific shots. One of my friends has a brother who did Wedding Videography so we hired him and we also used the same florist she had for her wedding as the owner is her friend. We used Flowers on the Corner, and as I wasn’t really bothered about a colour scheme, I just wanted bright colours, I left the florist to design the bouquets with the budget and she came up with hot pink gerberas which looked great. One of my bridesmaids husbands who works for a printing company designed our luggage tag place names and our chocolate favours were truffles made by me and another friend (although we did eat a lot on the way). The Suit Hire came from Greenwoods in Wrexham who were offering a really competitive deal and the Bride and Bridesmaid dresses came from my Aunties shop, Halo & Ellis, in Preston. Although it was an hours drive (slightly breaking the speed limit) it was really nice travelling up with my friends and family, it really made it special. James and I had a really good laugh having our wedding invitations created. We decided to have a boxing theme as we LOVE Rocky. The invitations came from friend’s Up Creative who worked with us and created a few designs for our Boxing theme, even one of our heads super imposed onto Rocky and Adrian from the finale of Rocky 1. As James had played in so many Wedding Venues across North Wales, he chose the Trevor Barn as he loved the venue and the owners are really nice. Ian and his wife opened their little black book of suppliers and helped us sort out the Marquee Company (no longer in business) and Hog Roast Man which worked out at less than £4pp for the amount of people we had. The only part of the planning that was stressful was trying to nail numbers down for the marquee and venue dressing company. I must have spoken to Nicky at the marquee company a million times and she was always very helpful and understanding. She has since set up her own business Blue Leaf Events. We really wanted a fun wedding that was informal and that everyone could relax at so upstairs in the barn we placed a TV and Playstation for the children to play Singstar. It ended up being hijacked by a lot of the adult guests so we ended up placing a camcorder up there and recorded some of the singers - very funny viewing! We also had garden games out on the grass such as a large Jenga and Connect 4 and in the evening we released Chinese Lanterns that I found bought on Ebay. When our evening guests arrived, I threw a plastic bouquet of flowers from the cottage stairs to the guests in the courtyard, it was a really funny experience as one of my bridesmaids won it but I’m sure there was a bit of shoving going on! We were allowed to supply our own alcohol on the tables so we bought all the drinks ourselves from Sainsburys as they

R eal W eddings offer discounts after 6 bottles and free glass hire. Those drinks were put on the table for the meal and speeches with little printed tags saying when they were allowed to drink them. As we are an ex-army family, we have a lot of big drinkers within our friends and family so we also had an extra bar in the marquee as well as the barn staffed by the Sun Trevor. As a bit of fun, I made a drinking game for the guests to play whilst the speeches were going on, guests picked a word from the pouch and had to drink when it was mentioned! A few people were a little drunk by the end! We also ran a bet on the length of my dads speech, everyone placed a bet on the length and £1 in a pint glass which the bridesmaids took around. My dad was a little tipsy when it was his turn to talk so he ended up dropping his notes and when he realised everyone was waiting with baited breath, he slowed down and took his time just to wind everyone up! His speech was around 26 minutes long but it was hilarious and his cousin ended up winning about £100! Our cake was made by my mums friend who liked our ‘Boxing Theme’ and so made a boxer figure for James whilst my figure was ordered from Ebay, she just had boxing gloves added on. James the boxer is still going strong after three years and sits proudly in our kitchen as a lovely reminder of the day. The table decor largely came from Ebay but we did buy vases and plastic roses from Dunelm Mill as I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on real flowers. I bought a Wedding Easel from Rags to Riches in Wrexham. I struggled with finding a Wedding Car Company simply as everyone was already booked up but the company we used were lovely but are sadly out of business. I found Elegant Finishing Touches on Ebay who came and covered the Chairs and provided Sashes. The rest of the Marquee was covered in Holly and Ivy, cut from a friend’s garden. The Wedding Rings were designed at Richard Hughes Jewellers and were gorgeous. In the interim between the wedding and evening reception, one of our groomsmen arranged a Quiz called Trivia in Trevor after our wedding which was called the Rumble in Ruabon. There was so much space at Trevor Barn that people were able to have their own space and relax so a lot of the activities were optional which I think worked well. After the band, we had a disco in the barn and then we stayed at the Lion Quays Hotel before returning back to Trevor Barn the next day for a family BBQ. The next day we jetted out to Las Vegas for our honeymoon which also included Miami and a 7 day cruise. The honeymoon was organised by Howard at Delmar Travel who was excellent. I have since gone on to create the ‘My Wrexham Wedding’ website (www.mywrexhamwedding.co.uk) to help brides & grooms to find trusted suppliers and to leave reviews after their big day.

More and more people are now using musicians and solo singers to accompany their special day; indeed we have great examples within this guide.

The evening reception is a great part of the day and choosing your wedding song can be an emotional decision. Check with your DJ prior to the big day that they have the song you want. It’s important to remember that there is likely to be

quite a cross section of age groups at the evening reception and having a diverse range of music is probably wise to keep people happy. However, there are some songs which everyone will get up and dance to!

Canig Trio

“Three local friends from Anglesey who recorded the ballad “Danny Boy” on a camcorder before going to watch a rugby match have seen their performance amass nearly a million hits on You Tube.”

Page 4

“Danny Boy has been good to us” says Dafydd, the trio’s second tenor, “We decided to celebrate when we accumulated 200 hits, but that seems a long time ago now, five years in fact”. The unforeseen success of the video with its thousands of resulting comments encouraged the three to further their talents and delve into the world of wedding performances. Since the video was made, they have performed at numerous engagements and venues including Los Angeles and Rome. The Rome performance was memorable as their Italian business audience of importers joined them in the singing of ’Delilah’ as an encore. “It was most pleasing to have the opportunity to promote Welsh produce and culture in such a wonderful venue as the Boscolo Exedera Roma Hotel in the Piazza della Repubblica, especially as they all joined in!” The trio can also claim to have performed in Japanese in a quartet with the bride’s mother, an operatic soprano, at a wedding in Plas Newydd, Anglesey. “Every wedding brings something different that is why they’re so enjoyable”. The trio, named “Canig”, (little song) consists of Merfyn Owen, Geraint Anwyl and Dafydd Jones who regularly perform at weddings, after dinner engagements and concerts throughout the UK and are also proud members of the renowned male voice choir from North Wales, Cantorion Colin Jones.

The trio recently performed at a VIP Launch at the stunningly located Plas Rhianfa on the banks of the Menai Straits, and will be attending a Wedding Fayre at the hotel on September 16th. They will also be attending the Wedding Fayre at Llandudno’s St George’s Hotel on the 2nd of September. “This will be our first foray into the world of wedding fayres, and we look forward with anticipation to entertaining brides and grooms to be, as well as numerous other people who attend.” The trio have enjoyed regular voice training and tuition for over twenty years from eminent Welsh vocal masters such as Colin Jones and John Daniel which has put them in good stead for their rapidly busying schedule. They regularly sing in Welsh, Latin, English, Italian and of course Japanese, when requested! The Trio are the perfect ‘touch of class’ for the most important day of all, and would be privileged to perform for you. They specialise in wedding service performances, and will do everything they can to help enhance your day. Their extensive song list enables them to entertain your guests whilst they arrive at your service venue, during the signing of the register and whilst the happy couple make their way to their festivities. The choices are all yours . . To get in touch with Canig Trio please email: canig@hotmail.co.uk or phone: 01248 410442 facebook.com/canigtrio
