Comes To Anglesey!
Events : Day’s Out : Health & Beauty : Food : Homes & Gardens : Motors : and Much More...
The Ffestiniog Railway achieved fame in Victorian times by being the first narrow gauge railway in the world to use steam locomotives. Remarkably four of these first locos survive on the railway today! 'Prince' and 'Princess' were built by George England & Co in 1863 at Hatcham Ironworks in New Cross, London. They were taken by train to Caernarfon - the nearest station at the time - then hauled over rough roads to Porthmadog on carts pulled by teams of ten horses.
In that same year the Prince of Wales, who would later become King Edward VII, married Princess Alexandra of Denmark and the railway’s first two locomotives were named in their honour. Two more engines were delivered the following year, one was named 'Palmerston' after the Prime Minister of the day. This loco survives to the present day and, like 'Prince', is in full working order and is used on our Vintage Train services.
150th anniversary celebrations will take place throughout the year... May 4th to 6th: Steam 150 weekend will bring the railway’s story, from early horse-drawn days right through to modern times, to life. May 17th to 19th: Rail Ale Festival real ales, live music and steam trains. September 6th to 8th: Welsh Highland Railway ‘Great and Small’ extra trains, model and miniature railways, something for all the family. October 11th to 13th: Ffestiniog Railway Victorian Weekend costumed characters and more... Don’t miss our Summertime Jazz Trains: th, 15th th, 22nd nd August 1stst, 8th

Me and co-presenter Spence with Max from the Wanted at Chester Rocks
Hope you had a good St David’s day and wore your daffodil with pride, if only it was a national holiday hey! Spring is almost here, the nights are getting lighter and the weather a little warmer, I love this time of year, plus it is only a year now till I get married!
A
nd that is one of the reasons why I MUST take a break from cake. We have had a great relationship up until now, I have loved you a little too much and so after eating far too much of it lately at all of our come bake with me parties, I have decided we must not come into close contact for a little while!! Huge thank you to everyone who baked and raised money for have a heart, helping this year raise money for seriously ill children and help make their wishes come true. We had lots of celebrities pop in to say hello including The Saturdays, who’s band member Rochelle has just dismissed the idea of cameras coming into film her giving her birth, as she doesn’t want her whole life exposed on camera, I agree, why on earth would you want that experience on TV for all to see!! Also had Rylan Clark, Beth Tweddle, Jude Law, Nicole Scherzinger, Alan Carr, and The Wanted, who of course you can see at Chester Rocks in June, tickets now on sale, I am going to be there hosting it so cannot wait, I met Max from The Wanted recently and he was lovely. So what do you think about Justin Bieber coming on stage at 10.20pm? Of all the concerts I have been to, most headline acts will come on for about 9pm let alone the fact that a lot of the audience are probably school age kids who will have missed school the morning after. Tut Tut! Although I bet the kids are loving him even more for that!! Although parents not so! if you like me are a fan of the songs from Sister Act the movie then why not book
your tickets and come along to ‘Back in the Habit’, it’s a show for one night only. I am indeed one of the nuns, along with the rest of the Liverpool Show Choir; it will be a fun night! April 11th is the date for your diaries it is happening at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. And finally don’t miss next week on the show when I will be trying 4 minutes of exercise every day in a bid to get fit …can just 4 mins 5 days a week do it, sounds too good to be true. With the help of Emily Muir my Personal trainer at Club & Spa, and Dewi from Lifestyle Fitness in Deeside I will let you know how I get on. Very pleased to hear Boyzone are going on tour and demand in the past week for tickets have increased by 300 percent beating that of one direction and the wanted combined! Whoop!! Pink is keeping very busy and has kicked off her big tour in Phoenix last week. The ‘Truth about love tour’ is coming to the UK, performing near us in Manchester in mid April, if you fancy going. She is awesome live! Always reassuring to know the stars are like us and therefore have similar hang ups …and in this case Pink certainly does, apparently she too has a nothing to wear wardrobe, I do too! She took to twitter saying ‘I have nothing to wear’. Despite having a wardrobe that is full of clothes! I feel your pain …………. although after all the pancakes I have eaten and cake, I can’t get into much of mine at the moment so I honestly do have nothing to wear apart from my black leggings!!

Spring is
In the Air! “ ” W As winter has finished and spring has started - there are plenty of reasons to feel perky when it comes to looking gorgeous…By Abigail Hughes
hether you’re the sort of girl who likes to stop and enjoy the bright spring flowers, or love nothing more than a brisk walk in the crisp sunshine, there’s plenty happening on the beauty front this month. Look glamorous with exciting, feel-good make-up. Simply choose a favourite glitzy nail polish, scarlet lipstick or dramatic eyeliner – and mix with more natural shades for pared-down spring loveliness. For rich, jewel-like tones, try Zoya’s fabulous range of nail lacquers (£11). As well as long-lasting colour, Zoya’s products contain no formaldehyde nasties and look so pretty, you’ll want to show off your hands at every opportunity! Emphasise your eyes with Estee Lauder’s selection of Double Wear Stay-in-Place Gel Eyeliners (£15.50). Ideal for day or night, the lightweight, soft gel texture glides easily over eyelids, without tugging. At the end of a busy day, enjoy a long, leisurely soak in the tub- and add a couple of capfuls of Dr Hauschka’s

Thundersprint 2013 A Fantastic Day of Motorcycling Nostalgia and Family Fun
If there is one event in 2013 which is sure to please the whole family it is the Thundersprint Festival, which will be held at the fabulous Anglesey Race Circuit, just off the A55 near Rhosneigr, on the 21 April.
A
t the heart of the Thundersprint is a fantastic trip down memory lane, with some of the world’s greatest racing motorcycles in action on the iconic 2.1 mile track which overlooks Caernarvon Bay. As well as the historic Grand Prix bikes from manufacturers like Matchless, Norton and Triumph the Japanese GP teams are well represented with the machines which dominated the racing world in the 1960s and 1970s. Showing the best of Japanese is six times World Champion, and ex-Honda team leader, Jim Redman. Jim lives in South Africa but is making the long trip to Anglesey just for the Thundersprint. He said: ““The Anglesey circuit is absolutely fantastic – a real world class track. I have never been there before but it looks spectacular. “I am bringing my whole team with me in the form of Clive Brooker and his lovely CR750 Honda. Clive’s bike is beautifully prepared and I ride it so often that it feels very much my bike. “Thundersprint 2013 is going to be a great event and I look forward to meeting all my fans in Anglesey in April.” One of the highlights of the Thundersprint is the lunch-time Cavalcade which sees over 200 bikes, stretching from the first days of motorcycling to the present day, parade on the circuit. Regular Thundersprint Cavalcader, Mike Moore, said: “The Cavalcade is one of the most fantastic events in the motorcycling world. To see, hear - and even smell - so much history in one place is an unforgettable experience and I just can’t wait until April. “I also love meeting spectators in the paddock which, unlike every other big bike or car event, is completely open and has free access for everyone. “I’ve never seen a “Keep Out” or “VIP Area” sign at any Thundersprint and this makes the atmosphere so friendly and relaxed.” Away from the track there is a huge amount to keep the

whole family entertained for the day – and at prices which are affordable by everyone. Pre-booked admission tickets cost just £5 each and well behaved pets, and children, are admitted free when they are accompanied by their carers. Probably the highlight for the kids is the huge fair and inflatable fun centre but every part of the event is child friendly – and welcoming. Away from the track is a huge display of motorcycles with riders coming from all over Britain to be at Anglesey. There is also a fine food area and trade stands selling everything from locally made jewellery to the latest bike gear and of course the unforgettable Rolo, Britain’s only duck herding sheep who will be doing a lunch time demonstration of her shepherding skills. And all this for a tenner – for the whole family! Is there a better value event anywhere in Britain?

Special Attractions at the Thundersprint Britain’s Happiest Family Festival The Thundersprint is aimed at the whole family. The cost of tickets at many events is currently very expensive so it’s great to see a top line day out where Mum, Dad, a couple of kids and the family dog can all attend for a total of £10 – if the tickets are pre-booked. Turning up on the day costs only £10 per adult.

hat’s really important is that there is free admission for wellbehaved pets, and children, so no-one is left out. There are also no hidden charges with completely free parking all weekend. If you fancy making a weekend of the Thundersprint then three nights’ camping is just £20 – again if pre-booked – and that’s for a tent, motorhome, caravan or whatever and regardless of the number of occupants. There is a designated “Quiet Area” near to the main campsite for those who want a peaceful weekend. There is a lot to do away from the track action. Right next to the campsite is a fair, simulator rides, bouncy castle, music and food. These attractions are located at the highest point of the track, overlooking the whole show. Access to the paddock is completely open to everyone and it’s here where you will find over 200

race bikes from the very latest Superbikes to pre-war Grand Prix machines. Even though some of these machines are worth over £250,000 you will be able to get close up and personal with them: there are no keep out or VIP areas at the Thundersprint. You will find the riders just as friendly and welcoming. The Grand Master of the Thundersprint is six times World Champion, 82 years young Jim Redman. As well as being one of the finest racing motorcyclists of all time, Jim was Honda team captain and a personal friend of Mr. Soichiro Honda – and you can’t get any nearer the top of the tree than that. Jim’s good friend is European Champion Sammy Miller who is another motorcycling icon and owner of the world
renowned Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum. Sam is bringing his RC181 “Mike Hailwood” Honda and his 1938 supercharged AJS – the first machine to win a motorcycle race at over 100mph. Representing the modern stars is James Ellison – the hot tip for this year’s British Superbike Championship on board his Milwaukee Yamaha R1. James is really looking forward to the Thundersprint and the affable Cumbrian will be available all day for photographs and a chat. Another star you mustn’t miss is Rolo – Anglesey’s most famous sheep. This wonderful lady is a true star and will pose for pictures all day long. Away from the track is a huge trade area with everything from ladies’ jewellery to the latest
Superbikes from major manufacturers. And don’t forget to keep your head down at lunch-time as the Red Baron and his First World War Fokker Triplane screams over Caernarvon Bay, hopefully without his machine guns blazing! A truly packed day’s fun for the whole family and just £5.00 per adult admission, when prebooked. n

Llanelli 10k finish
EX-WALES international footballer John Hartson is calling on 4 North Wales readers to ‘Grab Life by the Balls’ and join him on his BraveHart Ben Nevis Challenge to raise vital funds for people with cancer and their families. John, who won 51 caps with the national side and also starred for Arsenal and Celtic set up The John Hartson Foundation following his own battle with testicular cancer which spread to his lungs and brain and left him fighting for life. He wanted to give something back to the doctors and nurses who saved his life and one of the first organisations to benefit from the Foundation was the new £3m Maggie’s Centre at Singleton Hospital in Swansea. The 37-year-old, now assistant manager
to the Welsh FA, said: “As a professional footballer, I had it all: the fame that earning 51 caps for Wales brought me and the enviable lifestyle that scoring over 100 goals in the green and white of Celtic afforded me. I also had the warning signs of testicular cancer – and I ignored them. “I want people to know that everything I went through, everything I put my loved ones through, could have been avoided had I known more about the disease. Particularly, the importance of catching it early. “I’m also working hard to raise
36 l Goodtimes l www.northwalespublishing.co.uk
money to support others affected by cancer whether it’s a peaceful place to go for treatment or help with practical difficulties that cancer can bring. Because I know first hand the immeasurable difference that support can make. “So please, grab life by the balls – literally, in terms of checking yourself regularly and getting anything unusual checked out by your GP, but also by joining in the Foundation’s fundraising efforts to help others living with cancer.” This year’s Llanelli 10k is being run in aid of the Foundation and John will be
taking part. And the charity’s flagship event, the BraveHart Ben Nevis Challenge, takes place in July. This will be the third time John has climbed Britain’s highest mountain, on the anniversary of the weekend he was battling for life, to raise cash for the charity. He said: “We want YOU to join us for this fun-filled weekend in Fort William. Standing at the top of Ben Nevis feels like you’re on top of the world – and you’ll be raising vital funds to
help us carry on the charity’s work. Please take up the challenge – it’s an amazing experience you’ll never forget.” John’s BraveHart Ben Nevis Challenge weekend takes place from Friday, July 12 to Sunday, July 14. The fun-filled weekend in Fort William, Inverness-shire, includes two nights’ accommodation, meals, and fully guided walk up Ben Nevis followed by a celebration party on the Saturday night. n
There’s a £50 registration fee and participants are asked to raise £500 sponsorship. Places are limited so don’t miss out – sign up NOW at www.johnhartsonfoundation.co.uk You can also follow the Foundation on Twitter at www.Twitter.com/HartsFND

Recruitment agency uses martial arts classes to kick-start careers A NORTH Wales recruitment firm is helping people kick-start their careers – through martial arts classes! graduates they hope to move to California where Andrea dreams of working in shark conservation. Through Supertemps she works in hotels and restaurants to bring in much-needed money. With all the pressures on her, the martial arts classes have brought her renewed energy and stress release. “Everything in my world feels quite stressful so this is a great way to work out that stress,” she said. “It helps me forget about work and uni. “When I do the same thing all day, every day, this gets me away from the computer and gives me so much energy. It’s brilliant and I love it.” Leading by example is Supertemps Operations Director Steve Griffiths, who recently graded with the martial arts class. He said: “It’s certainly given me a feeling of well-being, and how important is that if you’re going for a job interview or battling the stresses of everyday life? “Personally it’s something I have always wanted to do but never got round to it. This initiative through Supertemps gave me the perfect excuse to do it, and it’s great.” The recruiter expects to run the offer again in the near future, giving workers a free month of classes, discounted classes thereafter, and £60 worth of kit free for those enrolling on a programme. Looking Forward to
Spring
I became interested in gardening at quite an early age and, being a Libran, my birthday coincided with the spring bulb sales period, and one of my aunt’s always used to buy me bulbs as a birthday gift, and quite often they would be “prepared” hyacinth bulbs or “Paperwhite” Narcissus bulbs. This gave me just enough time to plant them and have them in flower for Christmas. In the case of hyacinths planting needs to occur before the end of September so that bulbs can produce a strong root system prior to flowering. “Prepared” hyacinths are bulbs which have undergone a heat treatment which allows them to be forced into flower earlier than normal. They are available in Garden Centres now and should be planted as soon as possible into bowls using bulb fibre. The tips of the bulbs should be slightly above the surface of the compost. Water them in (unless using pre-soaked bulb fibre). Remember that bulb bowls do not normally have drainage holes in the base, therefore iit is important to avoid overwatering which will lead to root death and rotting of the bulb. After planting they should be placed in a cool position; it does not need to be dark. This “cold period” is essential for good results and should last for 10 to 12 weeks. A sheltered position outdoors is fine but should be protected from vermine and heavy rain which could lead to waterlogging. Light frosts will not affect them adversely but if sharp frosts are forecast move into the garage for protection. During this period the bulbs will produce a mat of white fleshy roots but the growing point should only have grown an inch or so. From mid-December onwards they can be brought indoors and they will come into flower within a week or two. “Paperwhite” and “Soleil d’Or” Narcissus can be grown in a similar way but only need a cold period of about 6 weeks. If they are required for Christmas they are best planted at the end of October or early November.
