POR TO ALL WATERS

Don’t miss the All Wales Boat Show taking place this Summer in Conwy! From 24-28 July, Conwy’s two marinas and surrounding waters will be a celebratory festival of all water-based activities, which promises to dazzle you with the very best in boating, excite you with the amazing array of watersports and whet your appetite with incredible outdoor activities & wonderful leisure opportunities. From power to wind and from paddle to diving, the range will be diverse appealing not only to watersport enthusiasts but also to those that wish to get on the water or just love watching the action. There will be yachts fit for millionaires, hand-crafted

traditional boats such as coracles, traditional salmon fishing boats and unique rowing boats amongst the range of craft on show, plus the chance to try your hand at everything from paddle-boarding and sail boats to diving. There will also be various classes of sailing races running alongside the Conwy River Festival, cruising, rowing, and family fun events including raft racing and raft building. For landlubbers there are stunning luxury cars to admire mouth-watering food and wine from Wales and beyond to sample and mock-rock faces to tackle. You can also take a ride across the River Conwy from one marina to another or

stroll along the coastal path between the two to get a view of the historic waterfronts and watch the many demos or visit the line-up of boats with plenty on offer to buy. You can also sign yourself up to join the crew of a roundtheworld yacht. Wales’ tallest sail training yacht, Challenge Wales, which took pride of place in the Queen’s Jubilee Thames Pageant, will also be anchoring at the Show on the Friday making it the tallest ship ever to visit Conwy. You’ll be able to see round the 72ft long boat which has a 95ft high mast, get a taste of life on the high seas and learn about the charity and how to get involved. They’ll also be running a competition to win a day’s sail for two. Davina Carey-Evans, organiser of the All Wales Boat Show said; “Two million adults in the UK enjoy water-based activities and the marine sector generates £66.7 million in Wales alone. Wherever you go in Wales, you are never far away from a river, lake or coastline which is why it’s renowned for not only offering every watersport activity possible but also some of the very facilities to do so, so it is only fitting that we have our own national boat show. “Conwy boasts two marinas and a reputation for outstanding watersport amenities. It is also a major tourist attraction in its own right being a world heritage site with its own medieval castle so is the perfect location for a show of this stature and size. “And with its easy accessibility whether by car, plane, train or even boat, it will appeal to a wide target audience from not only all of Wales but also the North West, Midlands, Isle of Man and Ireland so we are very excited about the huge potential of this new annual event.” The All Wales Boat Show has support from the National Boat Shows, the British, Irish and Wales Marine Federations, the Irish Sea Marine Leisure Knowledge Network, various watersport based clubs, Conwy County and Town Councils, the Maritime Heritage, The Outdoor Partnership and Tourism Sector.

Tall order for young sailors A search has been launched to find budding young sailors to join the crew of a round-the-world yacht. Wales’s tallest sail training yacht, Challenge Wales, that took pride of place in the Queen’s Jubilee Thames Pageant, will be anchoring at Conwy at the All-Wales Boat Show in July after competing in a race across the Irish Sea. The aim is to give local youngsters a taste of sea life by giving them a tour of the 72ft long boat which has a 95ft

10 l Goodtimes l www.northwalespublishing.co.uk

high mast and will be the tallest ship ever to visit Conwy. Challenge Wales will be sailing into the show on Friday, July 26, crewed by young people from different parts of Wales. It will be the first visit by the yacht - to Conwy or Deganwy marinas. Now the charity that keeps the boat afloat wants to hear from local young people in who want to join the crew, setting sail from Holyhead on July 5 for the Lyver Trophy Race to Dublin.

The previous tallest ship into Conwy harbour is believed to be the brigantine Zebu, with a 72ft mast, and before that Nuclear Electric, which had a 67ft mast, and which won the British Steel Challenge 1992-3 round-the-world race. The All Wales Boat Show from July 24-28, will be split between Conwy and Deganwy Quay marinas, with visitors ferried across the River Conwy from one harbour side to the other. There will be a range of craft on show, plus the chance to try out some of the equipment on sale, along with a variety of events and entertainment. Challenge Wales director Vicky Williams said: “We haven’t had many people from North Wales sailing with us and that is one of the reasons for coming to the All Wales Boat Show. “We want to raise awareness of the charity, find new volunteers, and to let young people and youth groups know that we have a bursary fund for those who live in North Wales, which makes sail training accessible for them. Our bursary fund supports Welsh residents aged 12 - 25 years. “The boat will be opened up at the show enabling all ages to learn about the charity, see the boat first hand and can learn about getting involved, such as by volunteering. We are an Approved Activity Provider for the Gold Residential Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme so that’s another way young people can get involved. “We will also be running a competition to win a day sail for two on Challenge Wales and visitors to the boat can also book up for a future voyage, whether young people or adults.

“The All Wales Boat Show is a great way to demonstrate to people the fun and the skills that can be gained in the world of sailing. “Challenge Wales is a sail training charity, both teaching people how to sail and helping those who step aboard to develop their personal and social skills. “We give people a purpose and help to broaden their horizons, a goal to strive towards, the opportunity to experience the highs of achievement and success and sometimes the lows of failure but understanding how to cope with that. “Teamwork, leadership, discipline, respect for others and communication skills are all developed while on board Challenge Wales.” The yacht was originally known as Challenge Business 47 and successfully took part in two round the world races – the BT Global Challenge 2000-01 and the Global Challenge 2004-5, when it came joint seventh, taking 170 days to circle the globe. Designed by Robert Humphreys and built by Devenport Yachts in 2000, she was one of 12 identical yachts that took part in the toughest yacht race in the world and covering some 29,000 nautical miles. Challenge Wales has also taken part in races including the famous Round the Island Race, Cowes in 2011(where she beat her sister yachts and half the Clipper fleet) and the Association of Sail Training Organisations (ASTO) Small Ships Race 2011 in the Solent, picking up her first trophy along the way. In 2012 Challenge Wales was invited to be part of the Queen’s Jubilee Thames Pageant in London as part of the Avenue of Sail floating exhibition in St Katharine’s Dock.

Challenge Wales’ attendance was endorsed by the Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan and she represented the youth of Wales in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Young people from different parts of Wales sailed Challenge Wales up the Thames as part of a special Jubilee Sailing Voyage. The All Wales Boat Show is being organised by event management and marketing specialists Sparc Ltd. Managing Director Davina Carey-Evans said: “We are very excited that Challenge Wales will be coming to the show. “She is a magnificent yacht and will provide a wonderful spectacle that I am sure will help inspire a new generation of sailors. “This is the first ever National Boat Show for Wales and what’s interesting is how far and wide the exhibitors are coming from - from all across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. “We believe the timing is perfect, too, because it’s taking place the same time as the Conwy River Festival. “Two million adults in the UK enjoy water-based activities and the marine sector generates £66.7 million in Wales alone. “Wherever you go in Wales, you are never far away from a river, lake or coastline which is why it’s renowned for not only offering every water sport activity possible but also some of the very best facilities to do so, so it is only fitting that we have our own boat show. “Conwy boasts two marinas and a reputation for outstanding water sport amenities. Unique rowing boat is a family affair at All Wales Boat Show A unique rowing boat, hand-built in Gwynedd, will be among the craft on show at the first All Wales Boat Show. It’s the latest design from Classic Sailboats, where watersports instructor Adrian Richardson has joined forces with his father-in-law John Jones, a master boat-builder. At their yard at Wern Difyr, Bethel, near Caernarfon, they’ve come up with the 14ft rowing boat, which can carry up to four people but is suitable for one and two rowers, and which is perfect for fun on rivers, lakes and in harbours, The range will be called Menai 14, but the name of the latest rowing boat will be unveiled at the show, which is being staged in both Conwy and Deganwy Marinas in July. “We are very proud to be showing off our new design at the event,” said Adrian, who is now business development manager at the company. This is the prototype model. It has a fibre glass hull, while all the trimmings and fittings are wood. “So it looks really good and elegant, and sits well in the water. Also it’s fast to row,” added Adrian. “We were looking to bridge the divide between fibre glass, and the traditional wooden rowing boat, to create something that combines the best of each.” The boat has been trialled at Llyn Padarn at Llanberis and in the Menai Strait, and they are now putting the finishing touches to the design, ready to unveil it at the show, where it will go on sale for under £5,000. John 55, has more than 40 years’ experience of building boats for use on the Menai Strait. He set up his latest venture in 2003 and Adrian, originally from oxford, joined him in 2008. “I used to sail dinghies on a reservoir near my home and then came to North Wales to be a watersports instructor at Plas Menai,” explained Adrian, now 28. During that time he met his wife Rhian, 25, a teaching assistant in Bangor, and the couple, who live in Felinheli, now have a son Leo, aged 15 months. “Maybe one day he’ll be the third generation to go into the boatbuilding business,” added Adrian. “We are looking forward to showing off our new rowing boat at the All Wales Boat Show, and seeing what else is on offer at the event.

This event is just what the watersports industry in North Wales needs.” The All Wales Boat show from July 24-28, will be split between Conwy and Deganwy Quay marinas, with visitors ferried across the River Conwy from one harbour side to the other. There will be a range of craft on show, plus the chance to try out some of the equipment on sale, along with a variety of events and entertainment. The event, organised by event management and marketing specialists, Sparc Ltd, aims to help Wales grab a bigger share of the marine industry that generates around £3 billion in the UK every year. Managing Director Davina Carey-Evans said: “We very excited about the huge potential of the event, especially as it’s the only boat show that uses the water to actually transport people. “It’s the first ever National Boat Show for Wales and what’s interesting is how far and wide the exhibitors are coming from - from all across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. For one week each July Llangollen is transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour as it stages its own Carnival of Nations. 9th July - 14th July

Evelyn Glennie

The International Musical Eisteddfod, held on the second week of the month, brings a fiesta of music, language, dance and colour to the little town on the banks of the River Dee. The colour and excitement of this great event still brings its message of peace and friendship to the place where Wales meets the World after 67 years. And that festival atmosphere floods out

from the Royal International Pavilion where artists of the stature of Luciano Pavarotti, Bryn Terfel, Joan Baez, Hayley Westenra and Jose Carreras have performed. Hundreds of competitors and thousands of visitors flock to the field and you can soak up the sights and sounds of the world as singers, musicians and dancers from New Zealand and Russia, ChIna, India and South America mingle. Impromptu performances break out, Zulu choirs sing, Indian musicians pluck sitars and accents from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas mingle. One of the highlights this year will be the visit of two members of a German youth choir who are to make an emotional return to Llangollen, 60 years after they sang there as schoolgirls. Ursel Gaussman and Inge Volkening, then both aged 14, were part of the Obernkirchen Children’s Choir which won at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in 1953 – and had an international hit with the song The Happy Wanderer. Sixty years on the Eisteddfod have contacted the choir, now known as the Schaumburger Maerchensaenger, and invited Inge and Ursel over, accompanied by the choir’s musical director, Gudrun Wuttke. Back in 1953 another visitor, the poet Dylan Thomas, described them as “pig-tailed angels” in a radio broadcast, one of his last for the BBC before his death in New York four months later. Ursel and Inge actually

met the great poet as well as the Queen and Prince Philip Gudrun, who has been in charge of the choir for over 25 years, said proudly: “He is one of my favourite poets and we still use ‘angels with pigtails’ in our publicity.” They will be there for the traditional opening parade which sets the template for the six days of the Eisteddfod, from Tuesday July 9, to Sunday, July 14, with a fabulous spectacle of colour and sound as locals and visitors from the UK and across the world join together. Competitors dance, sing and play musical instruments as the procession moves from the Eisteddfod field through the streets of Llangollen, and back again, led by the event Patron, Terry Waite MBE. The concerts begin that night with the Carnival of Nations featuring four of Wales’s finest male voice choirs, the Rhos Orpheus, Cor Godre’r Aran, Cor y Brythoniaid and the chart topping Fron Choir, performing on the 60th anniversary of the historic visit of Germany’s Oberkirchen Choir. They will be joined by the St Melodians Steel Band, from Trinidad and international competitors. Wednesday night will feature An Evening with Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie who will be joined by the rising American tenor Noah Stewart and harpist Claire Jones, former official harpist to HRH the Prince of Wales, along with the Eisteddfod Orchestra and the Santo Tomas Choir from the Philippines, twice Choir of the World winners. Thursday will be Strictly Cuban, a celebration of Latin dance rhythms with James and Ola Jordan and the Buena Vista Social Club while Friday will be VERDI 200, a performance of Verdi’s Requiem by to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth with Claire Rutter, Mirouslava Yordanova , Gwyn Hughes Jones, Jonathan Lemalu and accompanied by the Eisteddfod Orchestra conducted by Andrew Greenwood. Saturday is Choir of the World which this year will also feature Only Men Aloud, Last Choir Standing TV winners while for the first time dance will be teamed with choral music on Saturday night as the Eisteddfod’s top two dance troupes dance off for the new Dance Champions

2013 Trophy. On Sunday keyboard king Jools Holland will bring the house and the curtain down with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and a special guest. Eilir Owen Griffiths said: “I am delighted to have put together such a strong line-up and one that is truly global in its scope and one that shows that Llangollen still attracts the very best to come and perform here. “It’s a very exciting programme and is very different and we need to show that we can do that and remain true to the spirit of the International Eisteddfod. “We have a truly worldwide line-up which is a real mixture but I feel it is a good fit. “We have international class performers from around the world and that combined with the colour and atmosphere generated by our competitors and the welcome they receive makes this a unique event.” Outside the Pavilion with its high quality competitions in music and dance visitors can enjoy live music and international performances on the new and improved undercover Outside Stages. At the 200-seat S4C Stage, you can join in with a dance workshop on the Amphitheatre Wrexham Lager Stage or listen to live storytelling on the Lawn Stage. And in the early evenings the S4C Stage will be transformed into an amazing window

on world music for The World @ 6 programme of song and performance from Persia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa and more. Throughout the week world-class competitors perform in a spectacular celebration of cultures with stunning choral music and lively traditional dance, especially on Folk Friday when the outdoor stages will feature world-class music and dance. The Eisteddfod is a complete international experience and that goes for the food too. Home-cooked Welsh produce is on the menu but so are the cuisines of Europe, China, India and the rest of the world and there’s excellent local Llangollen ale. There are gifts and clothes from South America,

jewellery, wooden toys and Welshmade products at more than 40 stalls, including exhibitions of festival supporters, Extreme Animals and Owl Rescue Display, charity groups and more including jugglers, escape artists and magic tricks. estival No.6 is a pioneering festival concept bringing together music, arts and culture in the most incredible festival location you will ever see. Festival No.6 takes place over the weekend of 13-15 September 2013 in the eccentric surrounds of Portmeirion, Wales, home of the cult TV series The Prisoner. After a 22 year hiatus from recording, My Bloody Valentine returned in 2013 with their critically acclaimed record ‘M B V’, a wonderfully dense exercise in lo-fi indie. The Dublin rockers will join fellow headliners Manic Street Preachers and Chic Ft. Nile Rodgers at the top of the bill. London duo Public Service Broadcasting have also been announced.

Chic have sold over 100 million records including huge worldwide hits ‘Good Times’, ‘Everybody Dance’ and ‘Le Freak’. Nile has worked with a staggering list of true music legends, including Michael Jackson, Madonna, David Bowie, Diana Ross, Prince, Mick Jagger and, most recently, Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams on current single ‘Get Lucky’. Nile Rodgers said: “I’ve never been to Portmeirion but it looks like a truly magical place. Chic always love to play somewhere unique and special, especially if we’ve never played there before, so we’re really looking forward to Festival No.6. “It’s another big year for Chic and myself, with my collaboration with Daft Punk and lots of other exciting things planned, and Festival No.6 looks like being one of the highlights. We’re looking forward to showing Portmeirion that there ain’t no party like a disco party!” Legendary indie label Moshi Moshi Records will be celebrating their 15th birthday at the festival and will host the ‘Lost in the Woods’ stage. They

will showcase a range of cutting edge new acts and more established talent, including folk-rock duo Slow Club (two piece set), Leicestershire rockers The Wave Pictures, hypnotic pop songrtress Mariam the Believer, indie three-piece Teleman as well as Totem and Boxed in. Elbow front man Guy Garvey will be returning to Festival No.6 this year to join BBC 6 Music’s Stuart Maconie ‘In Conversation’. After the huge success and turn out for last year’s performance, they have been relocated from the beautiful Town Hall to the higher capacity Piazza. Acts for The Clough Stage have also been announced. The stage will feature a bespoke mix of Welsh and international artists and collaborators. Highlights include Geraint Jarman, Bryn Fôn, Bob Delyn, Sen Segur, Yr Ods, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Georgia Ruth, Heather Jones and R Seiliog alongside a host of other established and emerging acts and a number of DJ sets from the likes of Huw Stephens, John Rostron and many more. will also be making a rare UK festival appearance Warp Films is pleased to announce the screening of their critically acclaimed Made of Stone, the highly anticipated film about The Stone Roses’ record-breaking reunion

and will be accompanied by a Q&A. Vice will also present Reincarnated, the film that documents Snoop Lion’s explorations with reggae and Rastafarian culture. The acts will perform across the entire site, from the historic town hall to the Colonnade gardens, to the picturesque Estuary Stage and the promenade along the river, against a back drop of neo-classical architecture, sandy beaches and palm trees. Festival No.6 was named Best New Festival at the UK Festival Awards, whilst 2012 headliners New Order walked away with the prize for Best Headline Performance. More recently it was voted Best Small Festival in a public poll at the NME Awards. Bring your Floors Back to Life Why throw away something that just needs a second chance? When saving money and recycling are high on everyone’s agenda, maybe it’s time to think again...?

I

n the UK alone we spend tens of millions of pounds a year replacing our flooring - that’s a huge amount of carpet, vinyl, lino and wood! So maybe it’s time to look at alternatives…? The Managing Director of Traffik UK limited, a leading floor maintenance and refurbishment company, talks about their experience: ‘We’ve seen a huge increase in sales over the last 18 months in our dry carpet cleaning and our unique PU recoating system, from both domestic and business customers. Budgets are tight and people don’t have the same disposable incomes they used to, so they are no longer prepared to just throw away what they’ve got and are looking for new ways to extend the life of the floors or carpets they already have.

‘The biggest increase in sales from business and home customers, has been in our PU recoating systems. The system allows our customers to choose whether to refurbish their floor, re-colour it or redesign it completely (see opposite). ‘We’ve always done really well with the ‘home’ market. Our organic dry carpet cleaning system offers amazing results and the floors are ready to use immediately we’ve finished – fresh and reconditioned. But this has now filtered across to businesses and they are also seeing amazing results and benefitting from the lack of disruption. ‘The advantage of our dry system is that we can clean during the day without disruption or drying time – ideal for busy, high traffic areas that need immediate use once cleaned and businesses such as hotels, nursing homes, offices and retail - this is a massive advantage over the conventional wet systems. ►

Achieve Stunning Results In the last 12 months our team has grown considerably, moving to a bigger warehouse in which we are constructing a state of the art external show room to give the public an understanding of what resindrives.co.uk are all about. Thunder Island

For some of the most iconic circuits in the world, you just need to speak their name to conjure up vivid visions of the sights, sounds and sensations that spell out the essence of ‘motor racing’ to true aficionados. Watkins Glen, Imola, Mount Fuji, Le Castellet, Monza, Le Mans, Spa-Francorchamps and Phillip Island are all more than just venues, they are part of the very fabric of motorsport and they are set apart from ‘ordinary’ circuits by more than just layout. We get on aeroplanes, trains and buses to travel for thousands of miles just to stand in those locations, because we don’t have anything comparable at home.

B

ut before you rush off to see the travel agent, have a look at one of the hidden gems of motorsport that’s right under your nose. Here in North Wales we are home to one of the most beautiful circuits anywhere in the world. That’s quite a big statement, but just look around Anglesey Circuit and you’ll find it difficult to argue the point. Comparisons are often drawn with Australia’s Phillip Island and whilst you might think that one of them has a better climate, it is worth pointing out that the one that has penguins is not attached to the Welsh coast by the two historic bridges over the Menai Strait.

30 l Goodtimes l www.northwalespublishing.co.uk

Anglesey Circuit is a purpose built racing circuit that came into being largely due to one man having a dream and seeing it through to its conclusion. Richard Peacock is an ex-car racing driver who looked at this old army camp and saw possibilities, where others only saw run down buildings and sheep grazing next to the sea. He literally went and knocked on the door of the Bodorgan Estate offices and asked “Have you ever thought about making that old army camp into a permanent racing circuit?” He was pleasantly surprised by the positive reaction and pretty much agreed basic terms over a cup of tea. The original one mile circuit here was brought to life

Richard Peacock by the control tower with his E-Type Jaguar

utilising the internal roads of the old camp and whilst that was good enough to get things started, it wasn’t the vision that Richard had in mind when he dreamt about what he wanted to create. From 1993 to 2006 this circuit operated as a very “clubbie” venue using that old layout and steadily built a reputation for being friendly and welcoming to all of the clubs that used it. Richard had also surrounded himself with some very good people, all of whom are still here and very much a part of the success story. That was just the beginning, because all along plans were afoot to build something very special here in Anglesey. Dave Stewart, director of Thundersport GB, has known Richard for a long time and referring back to a meeting many years ago, he says “I have to admit that when he told me he was going to create one of the most demanding and rewarding drivers circuits from scratch, I probably looked at him as though he’d been drinking too much windscreen washer fluid. Like many others before me and since, I had underestimated this quietly spoken man and not only did he obtain the planning permissions required, he worked the oracle and got the finances together as well. The total cost to date is somewhere around six million pounds invested and there are always ideas in Richard’s head as to how he could spend more”. What you now see here is still not quite the finished article, as although the new pit lane complex consisting of a three storey control tower and 22 garages has now been built, the ongoing development will not stop until the facilities here rival the very best circuits in the country. If at any time you should see a tall white haired chap wandering around watching the racing, talking to drivers or riders, taking an avid interest in the general goings on in the paddock or casting an appraising eye over some far flung part of the circuits environs, you might well be looking at the creator of this great circuit. Richard isn’t someone who got into circuit management for commercial reasons; he is one of the genuine motorsport aficionados and is just as interested in all forms of racing today as he was all those years ago when he was a young aspiring racer himself. He still runs his own racing car school and is constantly striving for ways to get more people involved in motorsport Anglesey Circuit, Ty Croes, Anglesey, LL63 5TF. Red Rooster

Disco & Events Red Rooster Disco and Events cover all kinds of celebrations from corporate events through to Wedding Receptions and tea dances. With over 40 years’ experience in the music industry, Red Rooster has worked in radio, festivals, residencies and bespoke events. Here at Red Rooster Discos we believe we are unique due to our backgrounds of bringing the passion of music and people together. We really enjoy the personal touch of Weddings, myself (Nicola) meeting the bride and groom to see exactly what they want from their evening reception and David for putting all the music together and comparing the evening. Every Wedding and Event is individual to us and we put every bit of effort into it.

34 l Goodtimes l www.northwalespublishing.co.uk

We also specialise in Welsh music at Weddings, and although myself and David are not fluent Welsh speakers (unlike our children), we will be taking lessons! We do however know how Welsh Weddings are run and have all the popular and more rare Welsh music to cater for all ages. Where the tea dances are concerned we hope to join younger and older people together. Many of the older people are lonely and want to give back to society in the way of reminiscence and teaching the youngsters a thing

or two, thereby empowering our elderly population. We aim to have fun! With the popularity of Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing On Ice, we would like to know what amount of interest there is in the area to generate a regular tea dance along the North Wales Coast. We are equipped with compact lighting effects and a state of the

art sound system to provide an unforgettable experience. The music is the most important part, so if you want vinyl, you get vinyl and no selfrespecting Northern Soul fan would have anything less. We will do our utmost to fulfil your dreams. We cover North Wales, Cheshire, Merseyside and the North West. If you are further afield, call us for a quote.

Music is our passion -- 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today. We can focus on any decade or genre. We love working with our clients to get the best experience possible. Take advantage of our vast knowledge of music to make your occasion a memorable one. JEAN MEAD My writing career began some years ago with short stories and articles for magazines. At that time I had no desire to write a novel. But on a perfect autumnal day, sunlit with the bite of the first frost in the air, quite by accident I came across Dorothea quarry, an astoundingly beautiful and haunting place. Stepping over the rusty wire of a wrecked Blondin the idea of The Widow Makers came to me. There was lots of research to do before I could begin to write the historical trilogy based in the quarry lands of North Wales, but so in love with the Dorothea I enjoyed finding out the history of the quarry and the village of Talysarn in Gwynedd. The quarry in the trilogy is the Garddryn but many incidents that happen in the story actually occurred in Dorothea. The first book in the trilogy is The Widow Makers. The story spans the years 18421862. The book was published in 2005 and republished 2012. 2012 the second book, The Widow Makers: Strife, was published with a literary grant from the Welsh Books Council. The sequel covers the years 1862- 1874 and continues the story of the two families against the backdrop of the infamous strikes, lockouts and the struggles of the quarrymen to form a union. The Widow Makers:Road’s End 18741884 is almost complete and will be published autumn 2013. The Welsh Books Council gave the first book a cracking review. ‘Mead’s novel The Widow Makers is inspiring reading: a classic tale, full of all the ingredients which make for the finest novels. Based in the mid-19th century, it tells the story of the young Standish family, who move from the coalfields of Lancashire to the slate quarries of North Wales in search of a better livelihood. Daily life is much like their Welsh neighbours’, and death comes in the cruellest form to the village, but those who remain thrive,

despite desperate poverty, barbaric working conditions and the cruel winter climate. The eldest Standish boy is something of a changeling; he desires a different life and ruthlessly goes in pursuit of his dreams of grandeur and riches of the landowners’ class. Mead’s exceptional talent as a raconteur lets us share the family’s emotional rollercoaster ride, as they lose their eldest son, as he grasps the riches that are so important to him, regardless of the hurt and misery he causes his family and anyone who dares step in his way. My only criticism of The Widow Makers was that it ended too soon; I felt bereft! A sequel, please.’ Other Reviews from The Welsh Books

Her obsessive fascination with Adam tips her close to madness when he vanishes without trace. When she discovers the reason for his disappearance it is beyond her wildest imagining. Photography Very few people relish the thought of smiling to order; I so frequently hear “I hate having my photograph taken”. Music to my ears, it’s a lovely process; gaining someone’s trust, to work with them until their shoulders relax and their natural expressions begin to light their face. I search for the best in you; you on a really good day. Of course with children this is quite a different matter. On a shoot with a newborn they run the show, their session is calm, slow and laid back. The bonus with babies is I get to cuddle and soothe; there’s something very therapeutic about this process. I photograph all ages and now I have a space of my own (not on the high street) I can photograph all year round. (Anglesey’s weather can’t beat me now) I’m lucky enough to be busy with weddings. I throw myself into these occasions; it’s a highly creative process for me and brides and grooms enjoy my unique artistic flair. I would encourage couples to embrace their photography

experience, you’re already sizzling so be confident and trust me; you’ll never be photographed like this again! If you’re a guest at a wedding this weekend remember you’re an important part of the wedding party so get into the group shot and show how happy you are for the couple.

Looking Forward

To Spring I

became interested in gardening at quite an early age and, being a Libran, my birthday coincided with the spring bulb sales period, and one of my aunt’s always used to buy me bulbs as a birthday gift, and quite often they would be “prepared” hyacinth bulbs or “Paperwhite” Narcissus bulbs. This gave me just enough time to plant them and have them in flower for Christmas. In the case of hyacinths planting needs to occur before the end of September so that bulbs can produce a strong root system prior to flowering. “Prepared” hyacinths are bulbs which have undergone a heat treatment which allows them to be forced into flower earlier than normal. They are available in Garden Centres now and should be planted as soon as possible into bowls using bulb fibre. The tips of the bulbs should be slightly above the surface of the compost. Water them in (unless using pre-soaked bulb fibre). Remember that bulb bowls do not normally have drainage holes in the base, therefore iit is important to avoid overwatering which will lead to root death and rotting of the bulb. After planting they should be placed in a cool position; it does not need to be dark. This “cold period” is essential for good results and should last for 10 to 12 weeks. A sheltered position outdoors is fine but should be protected from vermine and heavy rain which could lead to waterlogging. Light frosts will not affect them adversely but if sharp frosts are forecast move into the garage for protection. During this period the bulbs will produce a mat of white fleshy roots but the growing point should only have grown an inch or so. From mid-December onwards they can be brought indoors and they will come into flower within a week or two. “Paperwhite” and “Soleil d’Or” Narcissus can be grown in a similar way but only need a cold period of about 6 weeks. If they are required for Christmas they are best planted at the end of October or early November.

side of recruitment WHEN Supertemps took on recruitment agencies from up and down the UK for the coveted Global Recruiter Award last month, their achievement highlighted the importance of customer service.

Judges appreciated their commitment to add value to a recruitment service when the independent agency was Highly Commended for Best Client Service. One of the issues the recruitment industry still faces is misunderstanding: some businesses still think of recruitment agencies as an extra expense for part-time or temporary workers. Yet the awards highlighted the fact that recruitment agencies can and do play a far bigger role. “I think the misconception remains stronger in rural areas,” explains Supertemps Managing Director Sarah Ellwood. “The testimonials our clients gave as part of the award show the range of services we offer – and we know in many instances the work we do surprises people. “What their feedback also shows is that using a recruitment agency can save you time and expense, and help your business grow. “Sifting through CVs and interviewing people takes up so much time – and how do you know you’re getting it right? “Let us do it. We’ve got the experience, the training and the resources.” The Operations Director of a Bangorbased IT company has certainly changed his opinion of the recruitment industry after using Supertemps. In his award testimonial he said, “I used to use agencies as a last resort. Thanks to Supertemps it’s now the only way we recruit. “They are the most professional and friendly agency we have used and they have never failed to find a good candidate.” When a post becomes available, Supertemps meets with the client and creates an accurate description for an advert. It interviews potential matches and then presents a shortlist of selected candidates for the client to interview and choose. The client adds, “This is a massive positive for me as interviewing candidates is both demanding and time consuming.” For a factory on the outskirts of Caernarfon, Supertemps puts production workers through a 90-minute induction before supplying to the client, ready to work. The Factory Manager’s testimonial read, “Having had dealings with other agencies in North Wales and the UK, working with Supertemps has really opened our eyes. “They’ve brought a new perspective of the industry to me, and a higher standard of service than I have known with recruitment agencies.” Many businesses use recruitment agencies to find permanent roles, and those

vacancies where specialist skills are required. Supertemps launched its own Specialist Division last year to meet this demand. But it likes to stay one step ahead as well. This summer it is offering discounted rates for clients to take on students looking for work between their studies. And to encourage businesses to take on local graduates, the agency is offering a massive 40% rate reduction if they recruit before the end of August. When the economy collapsed a few years ago, Supertemps made a decision to push on and invest. It really has something to shout about now, and businesses as well as awards judges are starting to listen.
