Porsche 911 Speedster

The Speedster name is one of the most evocative in the history of Porsche1. First used on the classic 356 model of 1953, the Speedster quickly became synonymous with low-slung, open-top, two-seater Porsche sports cars that attracted free-spirited driving enthusiasts seeking the ultimate ‘wind in the hair’ experience. Now, in celebration of the Speedster legend, Porsche is introducing a new 911 Speedster at the Paris Salon on October 2, and to commemorate its famous ‘50s forebear, the production run is limited to just 356 examples. Designed and conceived by the Porsche Exclusive department in Stuttgart, the two-seater 911 Speedster is significantly different from the

other members of the 911 family. Every Porsche Speedster was traditionally distinguished by its shortened windscreen and sleek tail, and the new 911 likewise features a 60mm lowered and raked windscreen and the characteristic ‘double-bubble’ hardcover for the manual soft top. The striking profile of the new 911 Speedster is further defined by the use of the Carrera 4 body, the 44 millimetre wider rear stance of which additionally gives powerful visual emphasis to the rear wheeldrive configuration of the car. Just as the style of the new 911 Speedster features contemporary re-interpretations of classic Porsche Speedster iconography, the characteristic

rear-engined chassis features the best from the current 911 generation. The 3.8-litre flat six has been tuned to deliver 408 hp (300 kW), 23 hp more than in the 911 Carrera S. With average fuel consumption of 27.43 mpg (10.3 litres/100 km) (NEDC), the new Speedster uses no more fuel than the standard 911 Carrera S Cabriolet – a consequence of Porsche Intelligent Performance2. The 911 Speedster features as standard a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) gearbox which transmits power via a limited slip differential to the rear axle, which lends further finesse to the chassis dynamics. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are also standard. Added to this is exemplary protection for the driver and passenger, with the safety roll-over protection system, which is standard in all opentop Porsche cars, being specifically tailored for the unique Speedster design. The conception of the current Speedster comes from Porsche Exclusive – the department of Porsche that specialises in individualisation of Porsche cars and low volume production. The 911 Speedster heralds the 25th anniversary of Porsche Exclusive which will be celebrated in 2011, and further demonstrates the competence of the in-house technical experts after the recent success of the 911 Sport Classic. The 911 Speedster has a generous level of equipment as standard and, as is to be expected

from the artisans at Porsche Exclusive, its appeal also comes from the meticulously hand-finished interior in black smooth-finish leather with numerous exterior colour painted details – each one bespoke to the Speedster. These include decorative designs with black and white patterns reminiscent of a chequered flag on the centre sections of the sports seats, and leather side bolsters in the exterior colour. The sporting flavour is enhanced further by the ‘Pure Blue’ exterior colour that has been developed exclusively for the Speedster, and which provides an intriguing contrast with the tinted front lights, black headlight surrounds, black windscreen border and other black decorative designs. It also features a bespoke front spoiler, specific side-skirts and a distinct rear apron. Porsche fans will also note the colour-coordinated black stone guard ahead of the rear wheels, reminiscent of prior editions of the 911. Upon request, the Speedster is available in Carrara White, at no extra cost. The new Porsche 911 Speedster will have its global debut at the Paris Salon on October 2 and goes on sale in the UK in January 2011, priced from £144,100. Fitted to every 911 Speedster is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

LASTapproach Last Approach are a 4 piece guitar based band from Bangor and Anglesey in North Wales. Originally formed in 2007, the band has been writing and rehearsing to build up a catalogue of songs to take out on the road. With a style loosely coming under the genre of rock, the band has an individual style that evokes different interpretations from each person who hears them. All the members of Last Approach are experienced musicians, having worked in numerous previous bands as well as playing a number of different instruments, with each member bringing a range of different influences together into the mix, from instruments played to music that inspired them. Their influences range from bands such as 100 Reasons, Tool, Coldplay, U2, The Ataris, Green Day and numerous other bands and artists covering every style of music. A self-produced demo album ‘Above the Sonic’ was released in April 2010 to enable the bands’ material to be heard by a wider audience, and has been well received

with good reviews in both local and national publications as well as reviews from promoters and on websites worldwide. Early in 2010, three of the songs were played on a UK internet radio station called ‘Total Biker FM’ for an unsigned band competition in which Last Approach won their heat and went through to the final resulting in a song being put on a compilation CD. Songs from the album have also been played on worldwide internet radio receiving 50% of its audience feedback from a growing number of fans in the USA. Last Approach began gigging to promote the album in July 2010 playing a number of pubs and clubs in North

Wales and the North West of England, including The Cavern Club in Liverpool and Liverpool University Students Union and has been well received at the venues played. The band has a range of live sets to suit the event ranging from ½ hour to 1½ hours with the band feeling most at home with their longer sets and all the songs are original Last Approach songs. The band also plays its songs as an acoustic set adding an additional dynamic to the band’s sound and has played acoustic sessions on local radio as well as for private functions. Last Approach are currently booking gigs for 2011, and are going into the studio in the new year to re-record tracks

Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd was established in 1976. The first ever show was broadcasted at 7pm on the 18th April, 1976. The station was located in the old C&A hospital in Bangor which is now the Morrisons supermarket. In January 1984, the station moved to its current location in Ysbyty Gwynedd. The station has around 15 members, who are all voluntary, varying from presenters to marketing, financial and training. For many patients it’s a friendly voice and possibly the only company they will receive during their stay. Sarah Wynn, has been presenting on the station for 4 years and has been the Membership and Marketing Officer since December 2009, ‘While my Grandad was a patient at the hospital, he loved listening to our shows and I was able to play him requests and keep him company. I absolutely love working at Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd. It is extremely rewarding and loads of fun. I’ve made a lot of close friends here on Radio Ysbyty Gwynedd. I enjoy all aspects of working at the station and I’m really looking forward to more experiences in the future.’ A concert and raffle will be held on December 4th to raise funds for the

service with some great local bands playing for free, Sarah explains, ‘I’ve had loads of donations for the raffle I’m organising from high street shops, local businesses & local attractions and local restaurants. I’ve had a cash donation from a local business which has helped with some of the overheads for running this fundraiser concert but I am looking for more donations if possible, it really doesn’t matter how small, everything and anything is a help to our station. Some local printers have also printed some of our posters for the concert free of charge to which we are extremely grateful. All of the bands taking part are performing for free. The University’s catering department are preparing all the food for the concert for free. I have been liaising with a member of the University who has helped sponsor the venue and the catering for this event. Tickets cost £7.50 which includes food. Tickets are currently available from Cob Records Bangor, Palas Print Pendref Bangor, Na Nog Caernarfon, Palas Print Caernarfon, Cwpwrdd Cornel Llangefni. In 2010 cancer was the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top killer and will touch each and every one of us in our lifetime. It is a global issue in need of support from a worldwide network. In 2007, LHSF was cofounded by leukemia survivors Mike Peters of the Welsh rock band The Alarm and President of CSI Entertainment James Chippendale who believe that awareness, early detection and proper treatment should not be a luxury and wanted to find a way to ensure that all people have access to the same resources that saved their lives. With headquarters in Denver, CO and chapters in Dallas, Peru, United Kingdom and Australia, the Love Hope Strength Foundation has performed concerts on 6 continents in just two yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time. We led musical pilgrimages to remote venues such as the base camp of Everest, the top of The Empire State Building, the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, and the glacier of Kilimanjaro and reach out through the

universal language of music. We have also teamed up with DKMS to expand our reach by conducting bone marrow drives at the largest music festivals in the United States so that people, like founder James Chippendale himself, can find the match that will save their lives. .Joining the Love Hope Strength Army in the battle against cancer are musicians from every corner of the globe. High school bands and Nepalese folk singers, to legends in rock n’ roll such as members of The Cult, The Stray Cats, Gin Blossoms, The Fixx, Tokyo Police Club, Squeeze, Candlebox, Seether, Smithereens, Dick Dale, Everclear and hundreds more have done their part to help spread the word through music. Each event is documented under the guidance of critically acclaimed producer, Alex Coletti, to build awareness through programs like Everest Rocks, now airing on MTV’s High Def channel, Palladia.

WHAT HAVE LHSF ACCOMPLISHED SO FAR? Funds from recent events have: • Purchased the very first mammography machine for the country of Nepal. • Purchased the first Nucletron brachytherapy afterloader (internal radiation) machine for the country of Nepal. • Funded a mobile cancer unit in Peru which will educate, screen and treat up to 30,000 patients per year in remote regions of Peru. • Funded a new wing for a cancer care center in Wales. • Supported the Valerie Fund in New Jersey, USA, a center for children with cancer and blood disorders. • Added over 2,000 people to the national marrow database. • Brought supplies to cancer centers in need around the world. • Sent cd’s and dvd’s to cancer centers around the world to brighten the day of patients through music. • Created an army of LHS volunteers who perform amazing acts of kindness and generosity in their communities. • Released the “Everest Rocks” documentary on MTV’s HD channel Palladia

Banish smudged nail polish forever! I have to admit that I have a real weakness for nail polish, I once bought 45 colours in one stint, something which I am not sure my business partner Jodie has ever really forgiven me for. There is something about having beautifully polished nails that I adore. The nails donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be long, but they look so elegant polished. 46 l GOODTIMES

I know from having our salons that I do not suffer this weakness alone. My ladies get excited when I tell them I have some new colours. The possibilities or nail enamel are endless and it is my guilty pleasure. However there are drawbacks to polished nails. They take ages to dry, they smudge and they just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t last. Even the most beautifully and professionally applied enamel can chip and peel in a few days if not maintained. But now I have a new love, or addiction as Jodie says. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called gel polish. Gel polish is a revolution in my industry, it answers the prayers to many a problem for both client and therapist. There is nothing more annoying for a client than to sit patiently whilst a therapist paints their nails, only to get to the car and realise they have smudged it. Even the most careful of my clients can still ruin a paint job by the time they get home and some less careful ones canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even get to the salon door without an accident. Gel polish is a fantastic product that I believe could eventually replace nail polish completely in the salon. Gel polish is applied just like ordinary polish, but is cured (set) under a UV lamp. The result is a hardwearing, chip free polish that lasts for up to two weeks! Some also contain agents that actively assist your nail to be more flexible and therefore less prone to breaking, peeling or splitting.

They are completely dry by the end of the treatment, no more blowing your nails, waving your hands in the air, or trying not to smudge them when putting your hand in your bag. You can even drive home without fear of catching you newly polished nails. (I have been told by a few of my clients that when they used conventional polish, they used to drive with their hands out of the car window, a statement that has filled me with fear for other road users!). They are not indestructible, and the wearer must still take care, wearing gloves for cleaning and housework but my customers are getting around 10-14 days wear from theirs which means lovelier nails for longer. My particular favourite brands are Gelish which comes in 48 colours, Bellas Vampire and Good Gossip are hot Gelish favourites amongst my clients and they also adore Shellacs Red Baroness which is a rich lush red that is simply divine, but there are other brands coming onto the market all the time. The cost of gel polish manicure is higher than a traditional one, but the results and effect is well worth it. So although the weather is cold and frightful, your nails will look delightful!

Christmas Mulled Wine Ingredients • • • • • •

1 bottle red wine 1 cinnamon stick 1 fresh orange, halved Peel of one lemon (optional) 2oz / 60g demerara sugar pinch of grated nutmeg

Method 1. Place the red wine in a large pan with the sugar, orange

halves, lemon peel, cinnamon stick and grated nutmeg. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. 2. If you prefer the wine to be a little more sweeter just add a little more sugar. 3. Turn off the heat, and strain the mulled wine into glasses and serve at once. Enjoy and relax.

Christmas Mince Pies Recipe Ingredients • • • • • • •

350g mincemeat 40g golden caster sugar 200g plain flour, sifted 75g ground almonds 125g unsalted diced butter 1 large egg, beaten dash of milk to glaze

Method 1 First of all preheat the oven to around 200C / Gas Mark 6 / 400F. 2 Lightly butter a 12 hole pie or patty tin. 3 In a bowl place the mincemeat and give it a quick stir so that the liquid is distributed. 4 In a food processor place the flour, sugar, butter and almonds and process until the mix looks like fine breadcrumbs, then

slowly add the egg and mix again. 5 Gather the mixture together in your hands and roll into a ball, then thinly roll out the pastry onto a floured surface. Cut out 12 circles with a pastry cutter. Press one circle of pastry into each of the 12 holes in the pie or patty tin. Press gently down, then fill each with mincemeat. 6 Next cut another 12 circles out of the remaining pastry, this time make them a tiny bit smaller. Place these smaller circles over the mincemeat and firm around the edges so they stick together. 7 Make a small slit on top of each of the 12 mince pies and brush each one with a little milk so it will glaze them and make them look more attractive when served.

8 Bake the pies in the oven for around 20 minutes until nice and golden brown. Remove them from the oven and let them cool. You can even sprinkle a little icing / frosting powder over each one and decorate before serving should you wish to.

Secret Supper The whole secret supper / underground restaurant movement harks back to the South American ëlocked door restaurantí or Paladares which is a long running tradition. It started to take root in London back at the beginning of last year, and like many new trends there, rapidly took off. Intense media coverage followed with all the major papers/journalists/food reviewers checking out newly established eating houses. I started thinking about doing this back in February last year when I heard about Jim Haynes, an American who lived in Britain for a while before settling in Paris. As the self-styled ëgodfatherí of underground dining he has been opening up his home for Sunday lunch for the past 33 years, usually with guest chefs doing the cooking. I thought it would be a fantastic idea...sharing and cooking good home-made food, for a modest donation and meeting lots of new people in return. I was still working full time

then and unable to see how it would fit into my life, but then I was made redundant. After a fruitless search for interesting jobs I read another supper club article this time about all the new places popping up in London. I thought it was a good time for me to give it a try...why shouldnít we give it a go in Wales? Itís not like we havenít had secret dining establishments in the past (I did a bit of research and found a couple of places that had a cult following in the 80ís and early 90’s). After leaving school I trained as a chef, coincidently at the same place as Jamie Oliver, so I already had the skills. I got some advice from other food bloggers and supper club hosts and got going. A year on I am doing great, I have a small but growing group of fans and regulars and I’m getting an increasing number of bookings for private dinners. Events are held a couple of times a month and are virtually unadvertised (only via the Moel Faban blog, Facebook and Twitter), we rely on word of mouth and good reputation. We donít leave a bill, you just make a recommended donation which covers costs. For that you get a fixed 5 course dinner and a drink on arrival but you bring your own wine (selling alcohol is strictly illegal as we are unlicensed)....oh, and of course it all takes place in my living room! I have a traditional welsh cottage built in the 1800ís which has retained much of its original charm

and features...its very pretty and that is part of what brings guests back... the food and the atmosphere. Guests like the fact that there is plenty to eat, don’t have to pay inflated restaurant prices and they get offered seconds if there is enough leftover. I only use locally sourced, seasonal produce (30 mile menu is my commitment wherever possible) which is all freshly cooked on the night. Everything is home made even down to the chutney and crackers (when I have enough time). I take bookings for open nights (with a mixed group of guests) or private dinners of between 8 and 12...my maximum number for a seated dinner is 12, or maybe more for a buffet. The most important thing is that its good fun, for me and for the guests. My family are also involved (surly teen waitresses abound, but you get that in any restaurant!! Echo Arena Winter Highlights As the nights get longer, the anticipation builds for a fabulous end-of-year line up at the Echo Arena, welcoming some of the biggest stars in entertainment to the waterfront venue. Proving its worth as one of the northwest’s leading sports venues, the Echo Arena is set to whet the appetite of sports-fans with not only the GB Amateur Boxing Championships (12-13 Nov) and World Netball Series (19-21 Nov), but also as host to the local British Basketball League derby between Mersey Tigers v. Cheshire Jets (24

Nov) before the venue streams into a hectic pre-Christmas event schedule. Following a sell-out tour in 2009, Here Come The Girls swings into Liverpool on 25 November. As the brainchild of Lulu, this year’s show welcomes back pop diva Anastacia and introduces British soul singer Heather Small (ex- M People) to the sisterhood. 2010 MOBO Award winners JLS also perform at the Echo Arena from 2-3 December - with an extra date added for 29 January 2011. Back by popular demand, December sees the return of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds (7

Dec), followed by Paul Weller (8 Dec), Lennon Remembered (9 Dec), 2009 Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity (10 Dec) and the often-controversial Frankie Boyle (14 Dec).
