At Rhyl Outdoor Events Arena, Promenade, Rhyl Background of Chic Fitness: Chic Fitness was born of Chic Pole originally founded in 2009 by Zoe Bishop, single mother, age 28 from Rhyl who found pole fitness a great way to get rid of her baby weight and improve her over all fitness & confidence. Since then Zoe’s areas of expertise in fitness and well-being have continued to develop so that today under the banner of Chic Fitness the services she can offer to women have become all encompassing. Chic Fitness focuses on women’s overall health and well-being. The aim is to bring out confidence, promote well-being and encourage women to become healthy, both physically and emotionally, which will inevitably enable them to look as good as they feel.

movements and having fun”, was born. Beto brought Zumba to the US in 1999 and it has since become one of the fastest growing dancebased fitness rages, not only the US but also globally. People of all ages love the Latino/World music and the easy-to-learn steps. Zumba is for all ages, shapes and sizes, and for all abilities. With a message of there being no exact right and wrong way to Zumba as long as you feel the music and “bring your own flavour” and an ethos of; “Ditch the workout, join the party!” it is no wonder the popularity of Zumba, be it in a Zumba class, at home with the DVDs, playing Zumba on one of the many game console versions or at the live events, has grown so rapidly.

Chic Fitness offers the following services: • • • • • •

Zumba Fitness classes Pole Fitness classes Flex and stretch classes Salsa classes & events Social events Nutritional analysis and bespoke 1-1 nutrition plans • Life coaching Chic Fitness is growing and will soon be offering more classes and opportunities for new crew members. Background of Zumba: Zumba was created in the mid 1990s by Columbian; Alberto “Beto” Perez, a celebrity fitness trainer and choreographer for international pop stars. Inspired by traditional Cumbia, Salsa and Merengue music with which he grew up, Beto combined his favourite traditional Latino rhythms with Reggaeton (Latino hip hop) and other red hot international dance steps. This is how Zumba, which in Spanish means snake, and which can also be defined as “with quick

Why a Zumbathon? Zumba fitness is one of the most fun ways of getting fit, as Beto the founder says…. “Red hot international dance steps, to favourite Latino rhythms”. Chic Fitness is bringing one of the largest Zumbathons in the UK to Rhyl, North Wales. A “Zumbathon” is an extended Zumba event; in this case three hours. If you consider that an average Zumba session can last from 20 to 60 minutes, you can appreciate why a three hour session deserves the suffix “thon”. However, that does not mean participants will need to slog away for a full three hours, the idea is to do as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. The atmosphere is one of party and carnival; think Brazil, Jamaica,

maracas, whistles and steel drum bands. Zumbathon is for everyone, whether a seasoned Zumba lover or a novice, young or old and for all shapes and sizes. All are welcome and all are wanted. Zumbathon Rhyl 2011 will be a fund raising event in aid of Clic Sargent, a national charity which supports children with cancer & leukaemia and their families; this is the dedicated charity which Chic Fitness supports because it is particularly close to Zoe’s Heart. In 2010, as Chic Pole, Zoe and fellow participants raised £740 through a male and a separate female sponsored pole fitness charity event; however in 2011 the aim is to raise the bar to £10,000! In order to make the event as varied and exciting as possible Chic Fitness has secured the participation, and extended support, of a number of guest instructors from within a 25 mile radius of Rhyl. These instructors, along with Zoe, the founder of Chic Fitness, will have 20 minutes instructing time each. To maximise the fundraising potential for these slots and to ensure high enthusiasm and a good turnout of participants; the guest instructors have had to meet a criteria of signing up 50 paid participants to the event thus securing their space on the stage. Participation in the event will require a minimum donation of £10 payable via www. zumbathonnorthwales.co.uk Therefore with a target attendance of 1000 participants, the fundraising target of £10,000 will have been achieved. But with a maximum capacity of 4000 moving bodies at the venue, the hope is to far exceed this target. In addition to this all participants will be given an individual sponsor form to allow them to raise even more money for Clic Sargent through personal sponsorship. Although Chic Fitness’s main beneficiary will be Clic Sargent the long term goal is also to raise the profile of, and funds for a local charity. This year Cuddles has been invited as the local charity. Cuddles is the charity which collects specifically for the Special Care Baby Unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital, North Wales. Cuddles representatives will be there on the day of the event in a number of capacities which include, face painting, balloon models raffle / tombola etc. What More Can Be Done? The Chic Fitness Crew hold a fortnightly meeting to discuss a steady progression of the Zumbathon in addition to brainstorming our strategy to move

forward. There has already been a lot of time input from the members on an entirely voluntary basis, and there is still much more to do. Therefore Chic Fitness require as much media coverage as possible and as much support from local and UK wide companies, who, it is hoped, will be willing to sponsor aspects of the event and/or get involved by offering their services. Although the amount of local support already pledged has been overwhelming, there remains a huge capacity for further sponsorship. Not only will this help secure the remaining items on the wish list, but it will provide the corporate sponsors with the opportunity for advertising by association and through the various mediums planned for the day It is anticipated that the success of Zumbathon Rhyl 2011 will enable it to become an annual event. If you would like to offer service or support to, and be associated with one of the most exciting and the newest large scale charity events on the North Wales Coast, please contact a member of the Chic Fitness Crew via the methods outlined below. We very much look forward to welcoming you on board and to working with you to make this a truly memorable land mark event.

Cerys Matthews Cerys has been collecting songs since she was seven. On her Sunday morning BBC 6Music radio show she delves into her vast record collection to share her passion and despite what radio programmers would have us believe in the need for the familiar and over exposed, the response has been a rapidly ever increasing audience that welcomes the diversity of music that is often new to their ears

“Explorer “ is the title of Cerys’ fourth solo album and in both choosing and writing the songs she has sub consciously delved into the huge influence of not just all the music she has heard, but the places she has been to around the globe, and by the times we live in, but most importantly made an album that over the seven days of recording had no pre determined sound or calculated format. The journeys start with the songs, from Spain, Scotland, Ireland, America, and Wales and their own migration. “I didn’t want to explore so much what makes the songs different from each other, but what they have in common. How, when they are put side by side, they might find a simple common ground that exists despite the characteristics of their land of origin being so diverse. “ Cerys goes on to describe the new songs she has written. “ Everyday I sit with my guitar and play music, some of the songs I have collected in my early teens, some just discovered. I wrote the rest of this album inspired by the idea of transience, migration and travel, imagining how people felt on hearing new sounds when first docking in new colonies, the uniqueness of smelling, seeing and of course hearing such strange things for the first time. “ “As I was about to go into the studio I started imagining sounds that might seem initially strange to the songs about to be recorded. Sounds that would in my mind compliment the message of the song, create a feeling that has the essence of where the songs have come from, but also sounds that added the exotic and the new.” The band took shape in the form of Mason Neely, long time collaborator, from Chattanooga, Attab Haddad, oud virtuoso and flamenco performer, Tigran Aleksanyan from Armenia on the Duduck, Frank Moon, of Cornwall’s fair fields, with his 100 year old banjo, and the very English sound of Serafina Steer on harp and backing vocals, Cerys leading from the guitar. The self produced album is released on May 2nd on CD and download on Cerys’ own label, through which she has already released her three previously successful solo albums (“Don’t Look Down”, “Paid Edrych I lawr “, and “TIR”).

As well as her weekly Sunday Morning BBC 6Music radio show, Cerys goes out on tour on May 2nd, she will be standing in for Bob Harris on his Radio 2 show and is presenting a TV documentary in both Welsh and Spanish on Cuba, a mentor on the BBC 2 TV show “Goldie: By Royal Appointment: a BBC Radio 4 programme on fishing, a documentary on the legendary TJ’s nightclub, recently judged the Dylan Thomas Award for new literature, performing at the Hay Literary Festival, curating a night at Cardiff Glee Club to celebrate the club’s birthday (with Natalie Duncan , Lester Allen , Tara Busch , and Mary Epworth) on May 1st , this year ‘s President of the Urdd National Eistedfodd on 30th May), and has her first children’s book published on May 4th “Songs From The Deep“ on Gomer Press.

Many nail techs use a metal tool called a cuticle pusher; it needs to be placed in a barbicide solution between every client. Some techs use disposable tools that are used once and thrown away.

aftercare advice shows you are informed and care about your clients nails. So if you don’t get any aftercare from your nail tech don’t be afraid to ask; and if they are not forthcoming, go somewhere else next time.

4. I will never be rough whilst preparing my clients nails.

9. I will preach the virtues of cuticle oil

Some techs use a nail drill to quicken their work and so if they do and they choose to use it on your natural nail plate, it shouldn’t hurt you. IF it does TELL them. 5. I will not choose speed over making a beautiful set of nails.

The TEN commandments of a GREAT Nail Tech In this article I wish to show my respect to ALL the professional nail techs out there that work so hard to ensure that they provide a fantastic service. Each of the commandments below has been offered to this article by a different tech across the UK. I hope that whether you are nail tech or a client you will take the time to read them. If you are a client please ask yourself the question “Does my nail tech do all of this for me, and if not WHY not?” 1. I will ask every new client to fill in a consultation card for me and ask every returning client if anything has changed since their last visit. You may wonder why you are asked to fill one in. It is primarily for insurance reasons and most insurance companies will require that your nail

22 l

tech gets you to complete one. It’s also there to help your nail tech understand your needs and adapt her/his treatments to you. 2. I will sanitise my hands and that of my client and I will check my client for any injuries or illness BEFORE I start work. It’s such a simple and polite thing to do and it’s important for YOUR health. It’s a minimum standard and if they don’t then leave and find somewhere that does. 3. I will ensure that my tools are disinfected before I use them on a client.

There are a few people who do nails who only see you as a source of income, who want you in and out as fast as possible, they don’t want to talk to you, rush the prep and cut corners. You are done in 40 minutes and before you know it, someone else is sat in your seat! Now this might appeal to you if you have a to-do list as long as your arm, but if you feel you are being rushed then go elsewhere next time. There are plenty of nail techs who would love to have you in their salon, and will not rush your pamper session. 6. I will offer my client plenty of choice and take the time to show them the options. It is so easy to fall into a rut but nail art is making huge comeback. Get that glitter out and have some fun. I am not a fan of mass produced nail art that a whole town ends up wearing, but if you fancy some nail art, then ask your nail tech what he/she can do and pay a bit more for some individual style! 7. I will explain to the client what I am doing

We all know cuticle oil is a wonder product. It is so great for our client’s nails, tell them all about it and encourage them to use it. 10. I will always be proud of the job I do and NEVER perform any treatments I have not been trained for. It goes without saying that you are NOT just a nail tech, you are a professional and I salute each and every one of you that care about your clients, your profession and that no matter what, will never let your standards slip. We are all guilty of this, we are concentrating to doing a great job and we sometimes forget to inform our clients of what we are doing and why. If you want to know what your nail tech is doing, then just ask her/him. 8. I will give them aftercare advice I know this one can seem a little bit of a drag, you find yourself saying the same thing over and over and its sounds boring even to you! However, great
