3D - TITANIC A box office record-breaker and nominated for 11 Oscars, ‘Titanic’ was the film everyone had to see back in 1998. And now there’s a reason why everybody should see it on the big screen again! Writer/director James Cameron went on to direct ‘Avatar’, the epic that showed how awe-inspiring 3D could be. Now he’s returned to ‘Titanic’ to oversee its painstaking conversion to 3D. The secret of the film’s success is its combination of incredible spectacle with a touching love story. Recreated in jaw-dropping widescreen magnificence, the dramatic sinking of the RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage exactly 100 years ago is reason enough to watch Cameron’s masterpiece. But it’s the involving, passionate romance between passengers from opposite ends of the social spectrum - Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) - that secured the film’s place in movie history.

Release date: 5 April 2012 BATTLESHIP Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is in hot water with his gruff commanding officer, Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson). That’s complicated by the fact that he’s engaged to Shane’s beautiful daughter, Sam (Brooklyn Decker). It makes for an inauspicious start to an international naval drill in the Pacific Ocean. But nobody could have predicted what would happen next. When a team is sent to investigate a vast and mysterious alien vessel in the middle of the ocean, it erects a giant forcefield and launches a devastating aerial bombardment. If humanity is to survive, Hopper must step up to the mark. Based on the game by Hasbro, who gave us the hugely popular Transformers franchise, ‘Hancock’ director Peter Berg’s spectacular sci-fi action film also marks the acting debut of R&B singer Rihanna who plays weapons specialist Petty Officer Raikes.

Release date: 11 April 2012 MARLEY More than 30 years after his death in 1981, Jamaican Rastafarian superstar Bob Marley remains an inspiring titan of music. The best-selling reggae album of all time, his greatest hits compilation, ‘Legend’ continues to shift 250,000 copies a year. Now, for the first time, Marley’s full story is told in a definitive documentary. Scottish director Kevin Macdonald, who gave us the Oscar-winning ‘One Day in September’, traces Marley’s rise from the ghettos of Trenchtown to become an international sensation. Along the way, we hear from his wife Rita and his most high-profile son, Ziggy. Also contributing are fellow musicians such as Bunny Wailer, legendary producer Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and Island Records boss Chris Blackwell. The result is a unique account of how such enduring classics as ‘One Love’, ‘Exodus’ and ‘Redemption Song’ were shaped by Marley’s background and experiences.

Release date: 20 April 2012 JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME Man-child Jeff (Jason Segel) thinks the universe is sending him signs about his fate. He lounges in the basement all day, while his long-suffering widowed mother Sharon (Susan Sarandon) works for a living. Jeff’s brother Pat (Ed Helms) has long since flown the nest and now has a miserable job and a troubled relationship with wife Linda (Judy Greer). In an attempt to get Jeff out of the house, Sharon sends him on an errand to buy wood glue. Along the way, he runs into Pat. Since everything happens for a reason, this is clearly a signpost to his destiny! Then they spot Linda with another man and embark on a farcical mission to find out whether she’s having an affair. This is a sweet-natured, offbeat comedy from the writer/directors of ‘Cyrus’, with another great comic performance by Jason Segel.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA

La Boheme

Making a trio of exquisite

DESCRIBED as “genuinely exquisite”, with “extraordinary performances” , Ellen Kent’s spring opera tour comes to Llandudno in April as part of a 75-date tour around the UK and Ireland. The internationally acclaimed Ukrainian National Opera of Kharkiv, joined by a host of handpicked soloists from across the world, has been singing Madama Butterfly and La Traviata to rave reviews. Now, it also tackles a brand new production of La Boheme. It visits Llandudno for the first time at Venue Cymru on April 18 (Madama Butterfly) and April 19 (La Boheme). After a two-year break to concentrate on other projects, Ellen’s comeback tour has proved a triumph – prompting packed theatres and sackfuls of good-will messages.

10 l Goodtimes l www.goodtimesmagazines.co.uk

The award-winning director and producer said: “It’s so rewarding to hear how much enjoyment people get from my operas. It’s good to know I haven’t lost my touch!” And true to Kent form, the new production of La Boheme features a few surprises alongside the stunning sets and glorious music. Madama Butterfly and La Traviata both feature children from local weekend drama schools. Now the appeal has gone out for dogs and a brass band – as the new production introduces a local element to each venue. The productions took 18 months to bring to stage – and have been well worth waiting for – with Russian designer Nadezhda Shvets praised for the gorgeous sets and the £25,000-worth of silk gowns, including antique wedding kimonos from Japan, borrowed from Ellen described as “ravishingly beautiful” . Ellen said: “I try to make my operas engaging and

opera performances sometimes I get carried away with interesting additions but with these there is no spin – just the drama and the beauty. I honestly think they are the best I’ve ever done.” Sung in Italian with English surtitles, La Boheme, based on Henri Murger’s novel Scenes de la vie de boheme, focuses on the love between seamstress Mimi and poet Rodolfo. After falling in love instantly, Rodolfo later leaves Mimi due to her flirtatious behaviour, although he is wracked by guilt since their life together has probably worsened Mimi’s delicate constitution. In true tragic opera fashion, the pair reunite briefly at the end before Mimi dies. Meanwhile Puccini’s popular tale of Madama Butterfly, which was used as the basis for West End musical Miss Saigon, is a heartbreaking true story of a beautiful Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant with dire consequences. International sopranos Elena Dee and Maria Tsonina take the leading roles of Mimi and Cio Cio San, while “ladies favourite” Andriy Perfilov is Rodolfo and Pinkerton. They are joined by a 70-strong company including tenor

Ruslan Zinevych, who has sung with Pavarotti and performed Ellen’s operas at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Conductor Gheorghe Stanciu, artistic director of the Constanta Opera in Romania, has joined the tour, bringing a new focus to the music, provided by the esteemed Kharkiv Theatre Orchestra. Presented by Derek Block Concert Promotions, one of the biggest international promoters in the entertainments industry, the tour features Madama Butterfly, La Traviata and La Boheme. For further information go to www.ellenkent.com or Derek Block Classical Arts on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter @DBClassicalArts. Health & fitness

Body Mass Index (BMI) –

What does it mean for you!

Imagine you have just been for a health check, where your health professional checks the BMI Chart and you are told the shocking news that your BMI is over 25. Do you actually understand what BMI means?

By Carol Mead of Able Fitness

BMI = Body Mass Index = A formula used to identify possible weight problems in adults and children to establish if they are at a weight which is healthy for their body type. There is a BMI chart which shows categories (or bands) of variation, which give a general indictaion as to whether a person is underweight, overweight or clinically obese. As everyone is slightly different within their body type, there is no ‘absolute’. If excess weight is indicated, (which could show a potential health risk) further assessments would be needed, which could include the following; body fat measurements; visceral fat (intra-abdominal fat) analysis; hip / waist ratios; diet; physical activity history; family medical history. Depending on the indication, generally, the greater your BMI the greater you are at risk of certain medical problems which might include; heart disease; high blood pressure; type 2 diabetes; gallstones; cholestrol; breathing problems and some cancers. We should also not overlook other risks such as osteoarthritis and even emotional symptoms such as low self-esteem and depression. Because the BMI calculation only requires height and weight measurements, it is an easy method for professionals to identify potential health risks as part of other fitness assessments. Using BMI allows us to compare our own weight condition to that of the general population. How is your BMI worked out? With the metric system now commonly adopted, the

20 l Goodtimes l www.goodtimesmagazines.co.uk

formula for BMI is weight (kg) / [height (m)] 2 Example: Weight = 80 kg, Height = 170 cm (1.70 m) Calculation: 80 ÷ (1.70) 2 = 27.68 The result you get is then categorized into the following table:

BMI – Body Mass Index Underweight Ideal

Less than 18.5 18.5 - 25

Overweight

25

Very Obese

Greater than

Obese

30

- 30 - 40

- 40

NB: Inaccuracies can sometimes occur if you are very muscular or an athlete, as this formula may overestimate body fat as muscle is heavier than body fat. The chart is also unsuitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding due to their obvious body changes, and equally, very frail people or those who have lost considerable muscle tone. To reduce your BMI and put yourself into a lower risk category, a change in diet and / or increase in exercise will be essential. Next issue: The benefits of Exercise. www.ablefitness.co.uk

New blooms may be emerging in the garden now, but what about the bathtub? If you love nothing more than languishing in a deep, fragrant bath, then reach for a floral bath oil. Dr Hauschka’s delightfully scented Lavender Bath Oil (£17.95) is a great antidote to stress, especially when followed by new Lavender Sandalwood Body Moisturiser (£22.95), which smells amazing and promotes feelings of deep relaxation. If spring fever’s making you feel frisky, reach for Cowshed’s Horny Cow Bath and Massage Oil (£20). Scented with rose absolute, patchouli and cinnamon, this is an uplifting floral bath treat, with a dash of spiciness. If cold winter weather and dehydrating central heating has left your skin feeling dry or sensitive – or if your skin is sensitive to factors like pollen – it may be time to reassess your moisturiser to emerge fresh faced into spring. Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Relief Masque (£37.60) delivers potent emergency relief to sensitised skin, while

Dermalogica UltraCalming Serum Concentrate (£51)

Barrier Repair (£32.60) provides a skin protecting invisible shield to help stop irritation and Serum Concentrate (£51) helps restore skin’s protective barrier. From Clinique comes new Repairwear Uplifting Firming Cream (£50), made with ingredients designed to help boost sagging skin texture and promote firmer looking jaw line and smoother looking forehead and neck – an ideal weapon in the battle against ageing skin. A new season is a good excuse to renew your make-up bag too. Clinique’s gorgeous new Chubby Stick (£16) gives moisturising lip gloss in uplifting tints. Estee Lauder’s new Pure Color Blush (£24) is a fresh, modern selection of shades perfect for perking up cheeks. Also from Estee Lauder is new Invisible Fluid Make-up (£27), a light foundation available in 16 shades which gives a lovely natural finish. Make the most of your eyes too with Sumptuous Bold Volume Lifting Mascara (£19.50) to give eyelashes weightless volume.

What is

Reflexology? Article by Sughra Ameerah

Our treatment menu describes it as an ancient healing therapy, massaging the reflex points on the feet to benefit the whole body. A wonderfully balancing experience that can improve health by restoring natural energy flow. When I introduced reflexology to my clients I always said “think of your foot as a little map of your body where all your body systems and organs are represented. Reflexology works on each area of the foot in order to stimulate circulation, identify and repair imbalances, and therefore promotes homeostasis – a state of balance”. More powerful and effective than a full body massage, reflexology is not only thoroughly relaxing but can ease many common complaints from migraines, backpain and general fatigue. Bearing in mind that your feet house thousands of nerve endings, it’s then no surprise that the treatment, which of course focuses purely on the feet, is highly powerful. During the treatment, as well as being warm, cosy and thoroughly pampered, you are likely to drift off into deeply

relaxed state that is often better than a good night’s sleep! You’ll emerge feeling energised, detoxified and much more in tune with the condition of your body.

30 l Goodtimes l www.goodtimesmagazines.co.uk

What is the history of reflexology? Believe it or not, reflexology wasn’t introduced to the UK until the 1960’s so many still consider it to be a ‘new age alternative therapy’. Dr William Fitzgerald, an American Physician

Health & fitness developed a treatment known as zone therapy in 1909 and the current method has been adapted into many different forms since then. It can be traced back at least 3000 years though and there is evidence that the Egyptians used it for healing purposes. Its origins are also linked to Chinese and Japanese medicine, especially the disciplines of Shiatsu and Acupuncture. These practises focus on clearing energy channels or meridians to promote balance and natural healing.

*Soothes aches and pains *Relaxes muscle tension *Promotes detoxification

What are the benefits of reflexology? *Relieves stress and anxiety *Improves circulation *Alleviates digestive problems *Reduces migraines *Eases skin conditions

Tre-Ysgawen Spa

Pamper Days A pamper day at TreYsgawen Hall is just that, from The Spa Escape, a full day of slouching in a fluffy robe, eating great food and enjoying gorgeous treatments to the Celebration Day – especially for a group of girls who need to chill, chat, catch-up and be spoilt there really is something for everyone. During the credit crunch, people may have taken fewer holidays abroad and cut back generally on expenses and bought fewer luxuries, but many of you have still needed that little treat and a spa day has provided the perfect getaway from everyday life. Although it’s only a day, the health benefits are numerous so we’ve given some great reasons why a spa day is just what you need. Give your body the rest it deserves Can you remember when you last did this – for a whole day? Probably never for most of us. It’s vital that we stop once in a while and let our bodies take a breather and it’s a crucial to enable your body to repair and rebuild itself. Many of us don’t get enough sleep these days or

we don’t get time to switch off properly before bedtime so a day off will do the trick Take a break from your everyday life Are you one of those people that says ‘I’ll have a break when I’ve finished painting the bathroom’, or ‘we’re just redecorating so I can’t go out at the moment’. Sound familiar? The fact is that there is always some excuse stopping us taking the time out that we need. What it will do is help to recharge your batteries and all those pending jobs might get done more quickly. Catch up with friends If you’re always struggling to find time to catch up with your friends individually then plan a spa day once every few months. It doesn’t have to be costly as most spas offer many varieties of spa day and your whole group doesn’t have to go for the same one. Have some quiet time When was the last time you turned your phone off, switched off the laptop and decided not to speak to anyone? It’s

amazingly therapeutic and something that we all need. Having done it myself many times, I’ve also found that half a day isn’t enough for me if I don’t do this often enough. Leading such a busy life means that I need the morning to try to switch off and then the afternoon to enjoy it! Have a no make-up day! Only you ladies will understand that having a day without makeup is so liberating. And all the treats in the spa mean that your skin will be glowing at the end from relaxing in the steam room to having a luxurious facial – and we certainly don’t recommend putting any make-up on at the end of the day (well maybe a little mascara and a bit of lippy) Tre Ysgawen Hall Country House Hotel & Spa Capel Coch, Llangefni, Isle of Anglesey LL77 7UR (01248) 753268 (Direct line) (01248) 753270 (Hotel switch board)

CAREERS

Looking For Your

Perfect Career? A RECRUITMENT agency is searching as far away as London to find suitably qualified IT workers for vacancies in North West Wales. Employers and recruiters in the area are finding it increasingly difficult to find skilled labour locally, despite a desire to create jobs for local people. Even with thousands of candidates on its books, independent agency Supertemps has a number of IT vacancies it is seeking suitable people to fill. Sian Williams, manager of the agency’s Bangor branch, said the problem was particularly acute in Gwynedd and Anglesey, where web and Java programming developers sought by private firms are in short supply. She said: “I think ‘Skills Shortage’ would sum up the job market for Bangor. Companies are certainly hiring, some more proactively than others. “One of the reasons may be that, especially for senior positions, people already in a job are keeping their heads down, rather than looking for new work. “To attract talent we’ve advertised on websites and social media, worked with Bangor University to find graduates, spoken to other agencies, and offered rewards for recommending colleagues or friends we place in certain roles. “We’ve even advertised in London for people to return or relocate to North Wales. In an ideal world we wouldn’t need to do this.” One solution is for employees and employers to be more flexible, marrying willingness from employees to learn and greater patience, understanding and encouragement from employers. Ian, originally from Llangefni on Anglesey, has recently returned to the island following a lengthy IT career in London. A change in lifestyle prompted the move, rather than being headhunted, but he was realistic about his chances of finding the ideal job.

34 l Goodtimes l www.goodtimesmagazines.co.uk

CAREERS

Nevertheless, Supertemps found him a permanent position at a Bangor based Software company in Parc Menai, Bangor. The arrangement requires Ian to train himself in a specific computer language and the employer has given him a three-month trial to “grow” into the position. “This is a great opportunity for me,” Ian said. “There are a lot of similarities between the products and services they offer and the financial markets data I’ve worked on in London over the last 20 years.” Ian’s advice to people looking for work but concerned their skills do not match the job criteria is to apply anyway, and offer to learn whatever is required. He said: “You are locked into what’s available and so you have to look around and see what recruitment agencies and websites have to offer. “Ask yourself, is there a crossover between what they ask for and what you can offer? “If so, this is where you need to expand your horizons. Be prepared to learn something new, and sell your potential to the employer. “You’re not going to find a job that matches your skills and experience one hundred percent. So keep an open mind, be prepared to learn, and persevere.” Supertemps also reports a shortage of qualified accounts personnel, business development managers and youth sector management.

It opened its Bangor branch in December to better serve organisations and employees in the Bangor and Caernarfon areas, Anglesey and the Lleyn Peninsula.

Stars come out to play Early entrants include the Le Mans and Daytona 24 Hours winner and ex-Formula One driver Jackie Oliver, who has a ‘new’ Ferrari drive for the Festival. He will be sharing a 1961 250 GT SWB with Rohan Fernando in the Pre-’63 GT race. This early aluminium-bodied competition Ferrari had a short hillclimb career half a century ago but has never been raced before, so makes its circuit debut at Donington. Jackie and Rohan will race against Lukas Hüni and Gary Pearson, who will drive Hüni’s stunning SEFAC Ferrari 250 GT SWB. The last SEFAC competition car ever built, this is the machine that Ricardo and Pedro Rodriguez took to victory in the 1000km of Paris in 1961. Coincidentally, in 1971 Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver joined forces to win the Monza 1000km – one of the renowned Mexican driver’s last-ever races. Commenting on his new drive, Jackie said, “Now Kevin

Wheatcroft has rescued the circuit from its near failure by the last administration, I’m both relieved and delighted to be back at Donington. This Historic Festival has now become the first historic meeting for a new season, which means – with much excitement – that we are all able to get back behind the wheel after the winter break. For Rohan Fernando and myself with his Ferrari 250 SWB it will be our first opportunity to see who and how we will compete against others in Carol Spagg’s Pre-’63 GT series. As this is the first time out with this iconic Ferrari in racing prep by Pearson Engineering, it’s very interesting to see how it will perform. Also I will compete once more in the Laranca BMW TISA1800 for the U2TC series. It should be a great start to the 2012 classic season – and much to look forward to.” Another exceptional car in the Pre-’63 GT is the rare 1962 Porsche Carrera Abarth GTL, one of just 21 of these

at Donington ‘giant killers’ ever built. Neil Tolich is travelling from New Zealand to share the car with Bill Wykeham for the event. Other well-known faces out on the track for the Pre-’63 GT will include musician Mark Knopfler, of Dire Straights and Sultans of Swing fame, who will share his AC Ace with Alain de Cadenet. In the 1000km race, Rainer Becker, founder of the Zuma group of restaurants, will campaign his 910 Porsche against the Spanish historic F1 racer, Joaquin Folch, in the Escuderia Montjuïc Ford GT40 that won the 1968 1000km of Catalunya. Finally, Jonathan Turner’s 1935 Squire Short Chassis – an early entry for the ‘Mad Jack’ race for pre-War sportscars – is a very rare piece of British motoring history. The Squire Car Manufacturing Company had a tiny production run, building just seven beautiful, rakish cars before it was wound

up in 1936. Squire’s founder, Adrian Squire, who was just 26 years old when the company closed, had worked up the initial designs – even producing a six-page catalogue – while still at school. Sadly, the cost of his dream car was to prove his undoing; at its launch the Squire was the most expensive sportscar in Britain, costing approximately twice the price of a 2-litre Aston Martin. Tickets and information Day tickets for the Donington Historic Festival cost £18 in advance (£25 on the gate), while weekend tickets cost £30 in advance (£40 on the gate). Children aged under 16 are admitted free. Entry tickets and camping tickets can be bought via www.doningtonhistoric.com and through the 24-hour ticket hotline 0844 873 7355.

HOMES & GARDENS

REES BROTHERS – Stone Works and Construction ‘Rees Brothers’ have taken on many challenging yet enjoyable projects including an extension on the coach house at Gwydir Castle which included sourcing stone and matching their work to the craftsmanship of the original stone masons. Another memorable project consisted of repairing and matching existing large stone arches, rebuilding a damaged gable end, and introducing new feature windows into a large 19th Century manor house. They have also completed work for the Snowdonia National Park repairing and building dry stone walls, which they have later incorporated into a large modern monument at Brammel Park Golf Club, Manchester. With over 10 year’s experience, Rees Brothers are continually adding to an already excellent portfolio as their business expands. Stone masonry The Stone Masonry trade was born during the time of the Neolithic Revolution and domestication of animals.

40 l Goodtimes l www.goodtimesmagazines.co.uk

HOMES & GARDENS With the need for homes and shelter, they learned to use fire to make quicklime and mortars, which were used to build structures from straw mud and stone. The art of stonemasonry involves shaping rough, random stone into accurate shapes, then arranging the pieces of stone with mortar to form structures. The Rees Brothers have undertaken many challenging projects

with great enthusiasm and enjoy each job equally. They use all the original techniques used in early masonry, splitting and dressing stones, building with lime mortars and completing work to the highest standard. For more information please visit:www.reesbrothers.co.uk

You’ve fed the birds

Now feed the Bees! Gardens are being increasingly recognised as having a vital role to play in the battle to reverse the decline in native species and habitats. The supply of bird food has developed into a mullti million pound industry and has helped to stabilise the dramatic decline in certain species of birds, although more still needs to be done to provide structural planting for roosting and nesting. Recently bees have become the focus of attention with populations under pressure from both disease and a decline in the supply of nectar from wildflowers. The role of bees as pollinators of many of our most important food crops should not be underestimated. Quite simply, we cannot manage without them, and even a gradual decline in their numbers is likely to lead to a drop in the yield from crops such as apples, strawberries and tomatoes. Monoculture and extensive use of weedkillers has led to a dramatic drop in the population of nectar rich flowers in the countryside, and gardens are now being targeted as a network of nectar hotspots to compensate. We all love colour in the garden but masses of bedding plants do not always provide bees with a good meal. Many of the most popular varieties have been bred to have big blousy double or semi-double flowers from which bees cannot extract the nectar. The Royal Horticultural Society has become involved in an initiative from broadcaster Sarah Raven to identify plants which are best for pollinators, and they have developed a “Perfect for Pollinator” plant list which can be viewed at www.rhs.org.uk/ plants. In addition many of the leading British nurseries have begun to adopt the bee logo on labels of the best pollinating plants, and these will be seen increasingly on plants in Garden Centres in the near future. Bee watching may never become as popular as bird watching but they need our help just as much! Single flowers can be just as beautiful as double flowers, for example cosmos and marguerites have become hugely popular in recent years because of their simple beauty and “naturalistic” appearance; they also happen to be brilliant for bees!

Kerb Appeal

The front of your house is the first thing that any visitors notice, so whether you are improving your property or looking to sell and move elsewhere, then don’t forget the kerb appeal! Imagine viewing houses to purchase, and the first house you view has an overgrown garden full of brambles complete with a gate that is partly falling off, partly hanging off the hinges – that’s not creating a good impression, and that’s before you’ve even got inside the house!

Security

Maybe you’re not looking to move and think why do I need gates? Well, they can give you privacy, complete a garden tidy up or renovation, keep your dogs in your garden (and other dogs out!) and put off opportunist burglars. A safe and secure gate will offer you peace of mind, as well as making all your neighbours green with envy at your new bespoke gate! BWF Code of Conduct Assured We are also pleased to announce that we have recently been awarded British Woodworking Federation Member status, after undergoing a rigorous vetting procedure, which included workshop visits, customer references being checked and several interviews. We are proud of this achievement and feel this is important to us as it gives reassurance to our customers of our commitment to the quality of our work and the standard of our customer services; why not try us out for yourself?
