energy spotlight
Energy Saving Trust advisors can save you money and energy when you need it most As fuel prices continue to rise, finding ways to save energy in the home in order to save money in the current climate of austerity will not only be useful, but entirely necessary for many. The Energy Saving Trust is Wales’ leading independent organisation in advising householders on how to reduce their carbon emissions and save energy. As a notfor-profit organisation, the Energy Saving Trust delivers free, impartial advice on renewable energy sources, energy efficient products, installing energy saving measures, reducing and recycling waste, saving on water consumption and greener transport options. The Energy Saving Trust freephone advice centre is a one-stop-shop for information about every type of energy saving for everybody in Wales. The advice centre’s specialist advisors can guide consumers through a simple home energy check to see where exactly cash can be saved, or provide you with more detailed advice should you want to install microgeneration solutions such as a heat pump or solar panel in order to cut your monthly bills. Online tools such as the home energy generator selector works out which solution is best for you, and the cashback calculator will also analyse the returns and savings that you could make. Energy Saving Trust advisors can provide advice and guidance on how to claim insulation grant schemes, and provide impartial advice on providers. Cavity wall or loft insulation can cost as little as £99 in Wales, and the work can be carried out in less than a day. This simple yet effective process can benefit not just the home owner but the environment. Research shows that if everyone in the UK topped
up their loft insulation to 270mm, around £520m would be saved on energy bills each year. But it’s not only in the home consumers can save energy. The increase in inflation, rise in VAT and increasing oil prices has meant fuel prices are more expensive than ever. All of these factors mean that the price of filling a tank in an average family car has increased to £70. If car drivers follow simple smarter driving tips they could save up to £250 per year, as well as reducing their carbon footprint. The AA has released recent figures proving that more than half of their drivers would like to save money on fuel by driving more economically- the Energy Saving Trust’s advice centre can teach drivers exactly how to do that. For further advice on saving energy in the home please visit www.energysavingtrust.org.uk or call 0800 512 012

household products
What’s lurking under If you assumed that ‘going green’ was either something that rich celebrities or the hippies left over from the 1960’s did, then perhaps it’s time to think again. Of course for some, choosing a greener lifestyle is a fashion statement; for others it’s a part of their political or ethical beliefs, but in the midst of a stern recession it’s actually something we could ALL benefit from.
The average UK household spends around £16 every month on cleaning products – that’s a whopping £200 every year. We don’t even question the spending because (sadly) we all have to clean. The good news is that going green in the right way can save you a fortune – and make your life healthier and easier. Historically, ‘eco’ cleaning products have either been rather fiddly (think lemons, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda) or rather pricey. I’ve always liked the idea of bringing my children up in a healthy home environment – I spent my fair share of time making organic carrot purees when they were tiny – but I’d
8
never taken that much time to look into alternative cleaning methods. I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of cleaning. I’ve always been one of those people who seemed to amass a vast selection of products under my kitchen sink hoping that just for once the advertising would live up to its claims and provide me with a clean & shiny kitchen with the flick of a magic wand. So I was very sceptical when I found ENJO, which promised to clean my whole house using only special gloves and cold water. This was 21st century technology: the cleaning equivalent of the microwave or the mobile phone (weren’t we all just a bit suspicious when they were first launched?)
household products
your kitchen sink? It’s no great secret that over the past 30 years or so the products we’ve been using to clean our homes have polluted our water supplies and been linked to an increase in asthma, allergies and various autoimmune disorders. Studies have even linked the detergents under our kitchen sinks to cancers: a ‘stay at home’ mum is 51% more likely to develop cancer than one working away from the home. Whichever study you read, the evidence seems to point to the fact that we have steadily poisoned our homes and bodies. There are some pretty shocking statistics out there: but the bottom line is that one of the best things we can do for our health and our pockets is to detox our home. Switching to ENJO cleaning was without doubt the easiest lifestyle change I have ever made. Look under my kitchen sink now and you will not see any bottles of bleach, anti-bacterial spray or floor wipes. You will see a pile of multi-coloured fluffy cloths and a spray bottle filled with water. Water is the safest and most effective cleaning agent we have: it loosens and dissolves the dirt particles. Cleaning with chemicals is all about destroying – we can all think of the advertising slogans – but the new wave of modern eco-cleaning is all about removing. ENJO fibres (used with water) reach deep into the pores of your surfaces – whether kitchen, bathroom or car – and gently lift the dirt and germs away, trapping it all in the fibres. This means not only a better clean scientifically, but also visually (no more smears on mirrors or stainless steel); no harmful chemicals being left behind, coming into contact with your skin, making their way to your lungs when you breathe them in, or entering our sewage and water systems. I’ve been cleaning with ENJO for over 4 years now and still haven’t had to replace a single one of my products. I’ve lost count of how many washes they’ve had and they just keep doing their job. I no longer walk down the cleaning aisle of the supermarket.
My children are growing up to see cleaning without chemicals as the norm – and I’m pretty sure it will never occur to them that they might need to buy bottles of toxic stuff with unpronounceable ingredients. And the cost? That initial purchase has worked out at less than a fiver a month – making it a fantastic investment financially too. Actually the cost issue for me is irrelevant – I could never put a price on the health and wellbeing of my family - but it’s great that it is a genuinely cheaper alternative. All in all, I’m proud to be a part of the greener living trend! Catherine Adey-Davies 01492 550523 catherine.adavies@enjo.co.uk

Toys and Crafts
The Rocking Sheep Company In a small workshop at the foot of Harlech Castle, craftsmen produce beautiful rocking sheep and lambs. These lovely toys are not only hand-crafted but are also made from natural sustainable material, locally sourced. What’s more, their coats are made up of genuine, high quality fleeces from British flocks. Unique, sturdy, washable and very friendly, rocking sheep are tomorrow’s heirlooms in the making. Each rocking sheep or lamb has been carefully crafted and based around a sturdy frame of solid renewable timber. The frames are then finished with a non–toxic, water based lacquer and covered with a genuine, luxury fleece, shaped and stitched by hand. Although sheep fleece is naturally hard wearing and stain resistant, rocking sheep coats can be removed from their frame for washing if required. Each ‘Georgian bow’ rocker has a unique, solid rubber insert on the bottom edge, which helps to prevent sliding and marking and keeps the rocking action quiet on hard floors.
These lovely toys are popular everywhere. As well as the length and breadth of the UK, they have been shipped around the world to countries including the USA & Canada, Australia, Latvia, Japan, Germany, The Caribbean, Panama and even Bermuda! They are made to order in a variety of different breed styles, sizes and colours.
For more information about these lovely rocking sheep Telephone; 01766 781234 or visit www.therockingsheepcompany.co.uk

Empty Property? Can’t Sell? Bills to pay? Maintenance to do?
We have 2 solutions The housing market is in a terrible state because the banks and building societies are restricting mortgages. If recent reports are anything to go by house sales are not going to pick up for at least 2 years and property prices are likely to drop at least 10% further in 2011. There is however 2 solutions you may wish to consider which could be better than just leaving it empty.

Rent it out through a professional Letting Agency
Sell to a Property Investment Company.
Coastalhomes is the leading the independent residential letting agency in North Wales and have successfully let and managed hundreds of properties for owners along the North Wales Coast. They will market, find and thoroughly check applicants to find you a good tenant and can then manage the property to ensure it is looked after and properly maintained. Their fully qualified staff can ensure you receive a good income until the market improves. Contact them for a free Landlords information pack or to book a no-obligation rental appraisal

Property Buyers Wales is a company who buys property that would be suitable to rent out. They have funds available and make an offer immediately and complete a sale usually within 4 weeks. They do want a discount from the current valuation from a RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveys) which may be lower than an estate agent may have given but there are no fees to pay and they will even cover the cost of a solicitor up to ÂŁ500. Many people have found this to be sensible alternative to having to wait 2 more years to sell at what might be a much lower price anyhow. This may also suit people who want to sell and rent back.Contact them to obtain a free no obligation offer on your property.

Leading the way in the One of Wales’s top young entrepreneurs is leading the way in the ‘green’ revolution. Gareth Jones, from Llandudno, and co-director Jon Bray, have set up Carbon Zero UK, a North Wales and NorthWest based company specialising in the installation of the complete range of renewable technologies for businesses and homes.
Go-getter Gareth, 29, from Llandudno, has been involved in the construction industry since leaving school and is the youngest ever President of the UK’s Federation of Master Builders as well as a runner-up in last year’s Daily Post Achievement Wales Awards. As well as Carbon Zero UK he is involved in groundworks business Mini Muckshift and is also a director of North Wales Construction Services, which later this year will be featured in a BBC programme about builders, but he sees renewable

Carbon Zero UK are experts at harnessing sun, wind, water and even the power of the air and the earth to provide homes and businesses with cheap power and free water and heating. Gareth said: “The opportunities in renewables are backed by government incentives which mean there has never been a better time to go green. “Commercial properties often have large roof areas which are ideal for solar panels and these schemes can pay for themselves within eight years and be

include air and ground-source heating systems and biomass boilers. Gareth added: “We are construction professionals who specialise in this field and can offer all these services – we can supply all your renewable energy needs.”

Bedding Plants – No.1 for summer colour Don’t get me wrong, I love those modern sleek sophisticated gardens at the Chelsea flower show, but in reality there is one thing that everyone wants in their garden and that is COLOUR! Hardy perennials which come up every year are great in the herbaceous border but rarely flower for more than 4 weeks of the year. Bedding plants will need replanting every year but can flower for 3 to 6 months. We have the Victorians to thank for inventing the flower bed and “carpet bedding”, a tradition which has been upheld in public parks and private gardens ever since, with elaborate horticultural displays ranging from floral clocks to 3 dimensional collages of the Wombles! So which are the best to choose?
Here’s my top 10. • Pansies and Violas – No. 1 for Winter and Spring colour but can run to seed early in a hot dry Summer. • Impatiens (Busy Lizzy) No. 1 for shady spots but excellent in most aspects. • Nicotiana (tobacco plant) Subtle colour palette including lime green. Choose taller species such as N.affinis or N. sylvestris for heavenly
perfumed Summer evenings! Best in sun, can be prone to downy mildew disease. • • •
Petunias – No.1 for a sunny position, brilliant colours and large showy flowers. Can be disappointing in very wet Summers, so look out for the weather resistant spreading “Wave” petunias. Marigolds – unique colour palette ranging from citrus yellow to burnished bronze and hot orange. Needs sun and slug protection! Begonia semperflorens – supremely reliable if a little dull, good in sun or shade.
•
Verbena – richly coloured flowers often with a white eye, best in Sun, pleasant perfume and modern varieties are now resistant to the scourge of powdery mildew disease.
• Dianthus – tough sun lover, some strains are frost hardy and almost perennial. Slight “Sweet William” fragrance. • Cosmos – good for height, big blousy flowers in shades of pink, white and carmine. •
Geraniums – ever popular, always reliable. They need dead heading, and are more expensive to buy than the others but can be overwintered in a frost free greenhouse.
