INTRODUCTION Goodwood is England’s greatest sporting estate. For over three hundred years, friends, family and guests have been visiting Goodwood to enjoy the sport and its famous hospitality. The first Duke of Richmond initially came to Goodwood to enjoy the fox hunting with the famous Charlton Hunt. He bought the house in 1697 and his descendants have lived in it ever since. Goodwood has been at the heart of the English summer season for nearly 200 years, and has been unique in introducing new events to the season. Horseracing, motor racing, flying, golf, shooting and cricket have all been brought to Goodwood by enthusiastic famil y members. Goodwood hosts the internationally famous Festival of Speed, Glorious Goodwood and Goodwood Revival, three of the largest events in the British sporting and social calendar. Within its 12,000 acres, Goodwood is home to one of the largest lowland organic farms in England, a famous Battle of Britain airfield, a historic racecourse and motor circuit, two golf courses and one of the oldest cricket grounds in the country.

The Moving Motor Show kicks off four superb days of car racing and automotive extravaganzas. As a visitor to the event, you are surrounded by a visual feast with open car paddocks, state of the art manufacturers’ stands, a prestigious car auction, a rally stage, air displays, entertainment enclosures and visitor attractions. Friends, family and clients are entertained with delicious food and drink, much of which is locally sourced.

‘Impossibly glamorous – the sheer, blood-chilling speed’ The Times

GLORIOUS GOODWOOD There has been horseracing on the South Downs above Goodwood, since 1801 when the third Duke of Richmond held a private race meeting for the Sussex Militia. The event was such a success that the following year he held Goodwood’s first public race meeting. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ (as Raceweek became known) has become a firm fixture in the English summer season, when the world’s greatest horses, jockeys and trainers battle it out for the honours at what is for many people, the most beautiful and atmospheric racecourse in the world. Traditionally taking place at the end of July, Glorious Goodwood stretches over five days. Each day has its particular racing highlight with Thursday being the glamorous Ladies’ Day. The dress code is linen suits and summer dresses which helps to give the event a relaxed and jubilant atmosphere as racehorse owners, trainers and celebrities mix with the race going public.

‘The place to be and be seen.’ The Times

THE GOODWOOD REVIVAL The Goodwood Revival was created in 1998 by the Earl of March, exactly fifty years to the day after the original opening of the Goodwood Motor Circuit by his grandfather, the ninth Duke of Richmond. The Motor Circuit began life as a wartime airfield and played a major part in the Battle of Britain. Than ks to the ninth Duke’s passion for motorsport Goodwood was the scene of many great race meetings and played host to some of the greatest and most famous drivers of all time before it closed in 1966. The Goodwood Revival is a three day event that has become not only the most important and celebrated historic motor race meeting in the world but is also the only major sporting event to take place completely in a period theme – it is an extraordinary and magical step back in time. Everybody dresses up in period costume from the 40s, 50s or 60s and the entire site is set-dressed to look authentic. Walking through the crowds is like stepping back in time to post-war Britain with a jubilant atmosphere as visitors savour this feast for the senses. The smell of engines mingles with the roar of iconic racing cars and planes, excited crowds and period music. Everywhere you look there is something to draw you attention, with hundreds of actors performing cameos at every turn.

‘The attention to detail is crazy and wonderful. Great theatre.’ Rowan Atkinson

A state-of-the-art health club with stunning indoor pool, sauna and steam rooms plus treatment rooms, creates the perfect atmosphere to unwind and rebalance. The oldest part of the building houses The Richmond Arms, where the very best of local and Estate reared seasonal ingredients are used to create dishes with a true British flavour. The Goodwood Bar and Grill, with views over the Park golf course, offers a variety of dishes throughout the day in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Described as a 'Feast for the Senses', The Kennels, Goodwood’s sporting members club is a welcoming venue set imaginatively amongst contemporary art and Georgian architecture, with much of the food served coming directly from the estate’s own organic farm. At the Motor Circuit two unique venues, the Race Control Building and the Jackie Stewart Pavilion, provide trackside opportunities for private catering – ideal for corporate or private track day groups. THE DOWNS COURSE Golf’s five-times Open Champion, James Braid, designed The Downs Course in 1914, though it is no less challenging to play for today’s generation of big hitters. Braid’s trademark dog legs and cross-bunkering combine with nature’s dramatic changes in levels making the course as compelling as ever. This downland course has been sensitively renovated for today’s golfer, whilst conserving its heritage and tradition. The scale, grandeur and aesthetic quality have all been improved, enhancing the spectacular views across the Estate and be yond, t ow a r d s th e S o len t a n d th e I s le of Wight.
