Foreword The Qatar Goodwood Festival 2017 marked a special moment in our history with the Qatar Goodwood Cup being upgraded to a Group One race. In addition, the overall prize purse increased to over five million pounds across the five days of the Festival. We continued to work on our global promotion of the Festival and the enhancement of the customer experience on the ground, against a backdrop of fantastic racing. Our focus for this year was very much to grow our digital audience and the data results provided in this report show that this investment has paid off hugely while laying a strong foundation on which to build for the future. On Tuesday, the stage was set for a historic third victory in the Qatar Goodwood Cup for Big Orange but John Gosden and Stradivarius had other ideas and this three-year-old colt showed his prowess when winning by almost two lengths. Indeed, the first day sprung quite a few surprises with prices of 20/1, 50/1, 100/1 and 33/1 across the board and some very happy punters as a result. The weather was against us on the second day and the going changed quite rapidly from Good to Soft. The two-year-olds took centre stage in the Bombay Sapphire Molecomb Stakes (Group Three) with Havana Grey overcoming ground concerns to win with authority for trainer Karl Burke. The Qatar Sussex Stakes was next and produced a surprising but popular winner in the shape of Here Comes When as he beat the odds-on-favourite Ribchester by a neck. The third day was appropriately Ladies Day with the Markel Insurance Fillies’ Stakes (Group Three) and Qatar Nassau Stakes (Group One) the feature races of the day. Endless Time won the former in a scintillating finish for Team Godolphin. Later in the afternoon, Winter was bidding for her fourth Group One race in a row in the Nassau; this time the script played out with a picture-perfect ride from Ryan Moore bringing the Coolmore connections tally in this race to three in a row. The sun came out on Friday and Battaash hid the headlines with a truly authoritative victory in the Qatar King George Stakes (Group Two) for Charlie Hills, while on Saturday we finally saw Frankie’s flying dismount when he took the Qatar Stewards Cup aboard Lancelot du Lac. The Qatar Goodwood Festival 2017 was the setting for some of the most exciting racing in Europe this year. Thrilling sporting action on the course, watched by an increasingly international audience, demonstrates the growth and future potential of our partnership. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to working with you towards another wonderful festival of racing next year.

2 August 2017 One of Goodwood’s oldest races, this marathon handicap has always been a popular feature of ‘Glorious Goodwood.’ The distance of the race was reduced by three furlongs to two miles in 1990 following the moving of the winning post and the introduction of new race distances but, the following year, it was extended to two and a half miles. The trip was further lengthened to two miles and five furlongs in 2001 so as to have a race over the traditional trip of the Goodwood Cup, which had then been dropped down to two miles. This race is now the longest run at Goodwood each year. Hugs Dancer, trained by James Given, was victorious in 2001 and 2002. He became the first horse since Golden Fire (1962 & 1963) to win the race two years in succession. Jump trainers dominated the finish in 2010, with the Nicky Henderson-trained Ghimaar defeating Ascot Handicap winner and subsequent Cheltenham Festival hero Junior, saddled by David Pipe, by a length and a half. It was Henderson’s second success in the race, following on from Afrad in 2005. Dual-purpose trainer Micky Hammond, based in Yorkshire, saddled his first Goodwood winner when Hollins triumphed at 20-1 in 2011. Another Yorkshire-based handler, Mark Johnston, collected a fourth Goodwood Handicap in 2013 with Broxbourne, adding to the victories of Hurricane Higgins (2012), Knavesmire Omen (2003) and Cloud Inspector (1997). In 2017 it was the turn of Ian Williams, who saddled Cool Sky to win at 25-1 under jockey Josephine Gordon. Williams was recording his third victory in the race, his previous wins coming from Teak (2014) and Baddam (2008).

COURSE CHARACTERISTICS The Goodwood Stakes Course of 2m 5f starts below the winning post and, running the reverse way of the course, turns left after about 4f and returns to the straight 5f run-in by the top bend. The Cup Course is the last 2m, the Bentinck Course the last 1m 6f and the Gratwicke Course the last 1m of the Stakes Course. The 1m 3f distance is a new one introduced this year. The Craven Course is 1m 1f 192y, starting in almost the same spot as the Gratwicke Course but running in the reverse direction and returning to the 5f run-in by the top bend. The 1m 1f course, though starting at almost the same point, follows the lower bend till joining the straight. The Old Mile and 7f Courses start on the Stakes Course and join the 5f courses on the lower bend. The 5f and 6f (Stewards’ Cup) courses are dead straight, the first furlong of the latter being uphill and then slightly undulating to the finish. The sharp bends and downhill gradients suit the handy, well balanced, neat actioned sort and are against the big long-striding horse. The course benefits from an artificial watering system. The one mile three furlong starts at the same point as the one mile four furlongs but enters the straight via the lower bend.

2016 WINNER: STAR RIDER 4 8 13 Jimmy Fortune 11-1 (Hughie Morrison) 20 ran
Race Summary The jumps boys are well represented again with Sunblazer and Golden Doyen both doing enough recently to warrant keeping in mind. Aurora Gray and last year's winner Star Rider give Hughie Morrison a strong hand once again while there should still be plenty more to come from the progressive Frederic. Denmead won in fine style at Kempton recently and is another to consider but the one to plump for looks to be HAWKERLAND, a lightly-raced son of Sea The Stars who completed a double when running out a convincing winner at Chepstow recently.
Win: Hawkerland
