F OR E WORD More records broken than ever before. Goodwood’s first runners from Japan and America. Four days of glorious summer sunshine (after a rather blustery start!) and over 100,000 racegoers in attendance. It was a fantastic five days of top-class horse racing, which saw Goodwood draw attention from around the world throughout the week and beyond. The Qatar Goodwood Cup was a really exciting showpiece to start the week when the popular Stradivarius, trained by John Gosden, won a historic third consecutive Goodwood Cup. Hopefully, he will return next year to contest an unprecedented fourth consecutive victory. The records continued to be broken across the week, with Yorkshire trainer Mark Johnston becoming the most successful trainer in the Festival’s history. The landmark 81st win came courtesy of Nayef Road in the Qatar Gordon Stakes. Later, the Japanese mare Deirdre stormed home to win the Qatar Nassau Stakes heralding a first Group 1 success for Japan in the UK for two decades. Khadijah Mellah’s ground-breaking victory in The Magnolia Cup, which is in its ninth year, took the meeting’s print media circulation to 53.2 million people. Coverage featured in every national newspaper in the UK, with the race broadcast around the globe, reaching over a billion people. Friday’s feature race, the King George Qatar Stakes, provided a real test for the best sprinters and saw Battaash write his name into the history books by winning a third consecutive King George Qatar Stakes, in breath-taking fashion. I do hope you enjoy looking through the enclosed album and that it brings back some great memories.
