publisher’s letter

H

ealthy, flexible, pain-free knees, hips and backs are all part of what keeps us active, moving and functional every day. But weekend sports, a desk job, sedentary lifestyles, injury, the aging process, chronic conditions and even an accidental misstep can bring on pain and cause us to lose flexibility and mobility. This month, we focus on keeping our joints healthy throughout life with exercise, diet, preventive care and a variety of modalities and methods. Suzzanne—our graphic designer—and I were discussing her efforts to improve her knee health, and she generously offered to share her story with us.

☛ Hi! I’m Suzzanne—I battle two big joint problems: my right knee and my left knee. The right knee was injured during my Peggy Malecki senior year of high school during a volleyball tournament (there went that scholarship), tearing tendons and my meniscus. The story of my left knee is much less epic: I hyperextended it and tore both my ACL and the meniscus while standing on a ladder doing hurricane prep to my Florida home. Both knees have had arthroscopic surgery, but needless to say, I live with a great deal of pain and inflammation. Two different surgeons have recommended knee replacements, but I am determined not to do it. So, to avoid surgery, I’ve decided the best route for me is a holistic approach to control the inflammation and arthritis that’s developed. Inflammation is the real problem, but luckily, can be controlled through a better diet and daily supplements of omega-3’s and glucosamine-chondroiton. I’m also trying golden milk, which contains turmeric, another natural means of reducing inflammation. I try to avoid foods that cause swelling such as processed meats, vegetable oil (I only use olive oil) and anything with food additives. Dairy and red meat are also big culprits, but I am hopelessly addicted to half-and-half in my morning coffee and Suzzanne Siegel that occasional rib-eye. Hey—I already had to give up a promising volleyball career! My family physician, who takes a holistic approach to her practice, recommended an ayurvedic treatment of rubbing warm sesame oil into both knees, which has really worked for me! Losing weight also helps tremendously, and since sports and running are totally out of the question for me, I’ve had to find other forms of exercise. Swimming, yoga and bicycling are terrific, and my knees don’t rebel against them. Yoga is the easiest for me since I can do it in the living room. This at least keeps my knees flexible and my two German Shepherds have come to appreciate the fine art of “doga”. I’m sure that anyone who’s dealt with any kind of major joint injury/problem can relate to my story. It’s often quite difficult to join in the fun when your friends invite you to go skiing or to a charity fun run, but there are still many fun, physical things you can do, as long as you do them within your personal limits and maintain the fight against inflammation. ☛ I can’t close this letter without mentioning that it’s still late summer, and I’m looking forward to a few more weeks of warmer weather. As we transition from summer to fall, try to take some time each day to observe the subtle changes. Take a simple breath to rebalance and notice the colors, the sounds, the birds and animals, and the plants around you, no matter whether you live in the heart of the city, in the suburbs or in a rural area. It’s these moments of awareness and attention that lead to bigger shifts in our lives. Savor summer’s lingering moments, because it’s still gorgeous here in Chicago. Get out there and enjoy! Peggy 6

This wellresearched science of red-light therapy safely liquefies targeted fat in problem areas. In addition, this therapy increases the pore size of fat cell membranes, allowing

the liquid fat to seep into the extracellular space, where it is taken up by our lymphatic system. The fat is then broken down into free fatty acids and glycerol that is transferred from the lymphatic system into the bloodstream. Once in our blood, it can either be used as fuel or quickly eliminated by the body, just like when we exercise and burn fat for energy. In addition to fat melt technology, Wellness Empowered offers therapeutic bodywork and other modalities to assess and support the body. Location: 2177 Shermer Rd., Northbrook. Preventing Osteoporosis Bones are actually living tissue that is constantly changing. Bones develop and strengthen from birth until young adulthood, being the densest in our early 20s. Remodeling is a term used to describe the aging process of bones with bone cells dissolving bone matrix called resorption and new bone cells depositing osteoid called formation. Factors causing an increase in this remodeling will lead to a more rapid increase in loss of bone mass and increase the fragility of bones. Osteoporosis is another name for porous bone. This disease occurs when the bone’s density and quality are reduced because bone loss is greater than bone growth. Bones become more brittle and the risk for fracture increases when porous bones become fragile. Osteoporosis occurs gradually and progressively, without any symptoms. Both men and women are at risk for osteoporotic fractures with one in three women compared to one in five men around the world. Most commonly, these types of fractures occur at the hip, spine and wrist, and their likelihood of occurOn the left is normal bone and rence increases with age. Fractures can be serious, the right is osteoporotic often requiring surgery and bone tissue. loss of independence. A Dowager’s Hump can result from spinal fractures causing a stooped posture and abnormal outward curvature of the upper back. We should be aware of risk factors for the development of osteoporosis. Some can be changed while others cannot, but all may indicate the need for earlier screening and proactive measures for prevention. Risk factors include age, being female, family history of osteoporosis, a previous fracture, ethnicity, menopausal, rheumatoid arthritis, and long-term steroid use. Modifiable risk factors are alcohol intake, smoking, poor nutrition, vitamin D deficiency, low dietary calcium intake and lack of exercise.

Osteoporosis diagnosis is simple and noninvasive with a bone mineral density (BMD) test. Based on medical history and age, a provider will determine when such a test should be ordered. The DEXA scan measures spine and hip bone density and is the most common technique utilized for diagnosing osteoporosis. This table from the World Health Organization is used to determine osteoporosis through a value called a T-score. Status

Hip BMD

Normal

T-score of -1 or above

Osteopenia

T-score lower than -1 and greater than -2.5

Osteoporosis

T-score of -2.5 or lower

Severe Osteoporosis

T-score of -2.5 or lower and presence of at least one fragility fracture

Osteoporosis increases the risk for a fracture, but lifestyle changes can help prevent having one. Because bone mass acquired in youth helps to determine the risk of osteoporotic fracture later in life, it is never too early to prevent the development of osteoporosis. Children and adolescents should engage in regular exercise, maintain adequate levels of vitamin D, and have proper nutrition and adequate calcium intake. The higher the peak bone mass, the lower the risk for osteoporosis. Statistics show a 10 percent increase in a child’s bone mass reduces the risk of an osteoporotic fracture during adulthood by 50 percent. As adults, we want to lower the rate of remodeling. To do so, adults should ensure adequate nutrition and calcium intake, maintain a good supply of vitamin D, engage in weight-bearing activities, avoid smoking (including second-hand smoke), and limit alcohol intake. Dental Mercury Restricted in Europe

The Link Between Bacteria and Heart Disease

Mercury can be toxic to humans, and concern about its use as a material in fillings has caught international attention. The European Union made the decision in July 2017 to ban the use of mercury-containing amalgams in pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under the age of 15. The ban was first proposed at the UN Minamata Convention in 2009, although nations and interest groups have long been concerned about the impact of mercury exposure. With the enactment of the Regulation on Mercury through the Minamata Treaty, EU countries have signed on to reduce the release of mercury into the environment with a phase-out plan as part of the process. By July 2019, each member state must have a plan for how it will eliminate the material. One representative says, “This partial ban on dental amalgams is excellent news, especially for children’s health. It will not only help protect the health of mothers and children, but also contribute to reducing everyone’s environmental exposure to mercury. We hope each member state will now take seriously its duty to reduce amalgam use for everyone.” As one of the largest users of dental amalgam, Europe’s choice to ban mercury may signal a global trend, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also discussed regulation. Concern is especially high for the use of the material on young children and pregnant mothers, leading to the EU’s decision to ban the material from these vulnerable sectors of the population. Evidence points to potential health risks, especially to the nervous system, during these crucial periods of development.

Years ago, we thought that ulcer disease was caused by spicy food. Then we discovered that stomach ulcers were actually caused by bacteria. The treatment of ulcer disease went from surgery to antibiotics and a better quality of health. In the same way, some researchers now believe that the development of plaque in our arteries is caused by tiny nanobacteria that utilize cholesterol and calcium as building blocks to form plaque, much like a coral reef. In response to this new model, researchers have developed alternative products that are capable of interfering with these nanobacteria. One product containing a proprietary blend of ingredients, including vitamin C, vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), folate, selenium, papain, grape seed extract, CoQ10 and many others, was given to individuals with positive coronary artery calcium scores. The study candidates were found to have a 58 percent reduction in coronary artery calcium scores. These findings were presented at the Tampiere Medical Symposium, in Norway, and are considered significant because this reduction was both large and took place prior to the occurrence of a medical event. Traditional statin therapy has been shown to reverse plaque only after the first heart attack. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the U.S. for both men and women, and more than 50 percent of all heart attack and stroke victims have normal cholesterol levels. Fifty percent of men and 64 percent of women that die suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms of it. Many people may have cardiovascular disease and not know it.

Doctors Underestimate Opioid Prescriptions People are frequently introduced to highly addictive opioid painkillers when using hospital emergency rooms. When University of Colorado and University of Massachusetts medical researchers surveyed 109 emergency medicine physicians at four hospitals, they found that 65 percent of them significantly underestimated how many opioids they were prescribing compared to their peers. In six- and 12-month follow-ups, the researchers consequently found that opioid orders by all the doctors surveyed dropped by 3.5 and 4.3 percent, respectively. Those shown that they had been overprescribing lowered their rates even more, by an additional 2.1 and 2.2 percent.

Spanking Linked to Mental Health Problems Spanking—defined as using physical force to control a child’s behavior by inflicting pain, but not injury—can have profound effects on a child later in life, say University of Michigan researchers. Surveying records of 8,300 people that visited outpatient clinics for routine health problems, they found that the 55 percent of those that reported being spanked as children had higher incidences of depression, suicide attempts, drinking and drug use. The finding is in line with previous studies showing that childhood trauma, abuse and neglect can have longterm health effects.

Being Sustainable Down to Our Soles Following an environmentally friendly lifestyle can be felt right down to our toes. Increase the life of footwear by being properly fitted in high-quality shoes, performing ongoing maintenance and patronizing cobblers. Pay extra attention to waterproofing shoes in winter and rainy seasons. Also, vegan alternatives to leather are available. Shoe repairs annually keep nearly 1 million pairs of shoes out of landfills and save about 1 billion animals, according to My Shoe Hospital (MyShoeHospital.com), in Austin, Texas, which express-mails shoe repair services. The company reports that total global footwear manufacturing produces nearly 1.5 million tons of waste leather per year. Much of it can be avoided. n Proper maintenance starts with using a leather cleaner and conditioner, followed by applying polishes and waxes to renew color, cover scuff marks and soften the surface. A natural weatherproofing agent, like lanolin, seed oils or beeswax helps to further seal the surface to prevent water seepage. n In addition to resoling shoes to extend their lifespan, some repair shops offer stretching services and fitting aids to improve comfort or preserve desired shape. Shop locators are part of the Shoe Service Institute of America (ssia.info) and Society of Master Shoe Repairers (somsr.com) websites. n Conventional shoe leather not only involves killing animals, but also treating animal skins with toxic chemicals like mineral salts, lead, cyanide and formaldehyde. Materials like linen, cotton, cork, wood, imitation leathers and recycled faux suede are used in Olsenhaus’ vegan shoe line (Olsenhaus.com). n Many sustainable shoe brands belong to the Better Shoes Foundation (BetterShoes.org). Members include Lyf Shoes (LyfShoes.com) of Raleigh, North Carolina, custommade of 100 percent recyclable materials; Osborn footwear (ShopOsborn.com), featuring fair trade production and eco-friendly materials; and Verdura Shoes (VerduraShoes.com), made from recycled fishing nets and other eco-friendly sources.

iane Roth has been a bodyworker for 34 years. She explains that bodywork is a broad term for many different kinds of therapeutic touch, including therapeutic massage, shiatsu, CranioSacral Therapy and much more. “The main body of my work is Structural Integration (SI), sometimes known as Rolfing,” she says. SI realigns, rebalances and reeducates the body through manual therapy and movement education—it takes a global approach to the body. “Since bodies are three-dimensional, when your back hurts, the cause may be somewhere else,” notes Roth. “I look to see what is happening in your shoulders or legs that could be contributing. Our bodies have many layers, and many emotions and experiences. All of these things contribute to the pain you feel, the lack of movement and stress.” Roth explains. “In SI, I do something called body reading. My client will stand and walk in athletic Diane Roth clothes while I observe movement patterns and relationships between parts and layers. With this information and a client’s concerns, I can put together a session or series of sessions that will rebalance those relationships. This will provide better function, less pain and a feeling of ease.” Roth relates that she has learned a lot in 34 years as a practitioner, including continuing education and feedback from clients. “People are complicated and endlessly fascinating. We change and heal and balance at different rates, each with a unique style,” she states. “I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with people all these years, and hope to keep practicing for years to come.”

Aligned Modern Health Helps Restore Joint Health Holistically by Carrie Jackson

ith an integrated approach that strives to help patients eliminate the root cause of pain and live life to the fullest, the team at Aligned Modern Health can help restore both acute and chronic joint health issues. Whether the pain is caused by traumatic injury, repetitive stress, unhealthy diet and lifestyle or genetic predisposition, Aligned works to eliminate the trigger and get patients back on their feet. With more than a dozen locations in Chicago and the suburbs and doctors that specialize in modern laboratory testing and diagnostic techniques to correct fundamental imbalances, their commitment to quality care helps patients get back to what they love doing as quickly as possible. Aligned addresses joint pain with a holistic philosophy and prescribes treatments that complement each patient’s individual body, mind and lifestyle. “We are unique because we bring experts from multiple specialties of complementary care under one roof. Our team of experts work closely together throughout the patient’s health journey to look at the person as a whole, rather than a segmented series of issues or symptoms,” says Dr. Laura Cayce, Aligned’s director of provider partnerships. A comprehensive approach to joint 22

pain relief offers long-lasting preventive and therapeutic benefits, and Aligned utilizes methods that traditional medical doctors often do not. “Our services can supplement or replace the usual medications and interventions for joint pain relief depending on your particular history, issues and preferences. We complement conventional medicine with natural, evidence-based methods such as acupuncture, chiropractic, functional medicine, soft tissue therapy, physical rehabilitation and therapeutic massage. Because there are so many causes and aggravating factors for joint pain, we help you reduce your pain using many different strategies,” says Cayce. Acupuncture addresses joint health by supplying more blood flow and healing ability to the area of concern, which reduces inflammation and allows the joint to heal more quickly. As with any injury, starting a treatment early is key. “An acute condition can become more chronic by there being less and less blood flow to the area. This means that there will be a lessening of nourishment and mobility of the joint. Over time, this begins to decrease the ability of the joint to recover,” says Joseph Kay, a licensed clinical acupuncturist at Aligned.

Raqaq Alebiosu is a doctor of chiropractic at Aligned who says that chiropractic treatments can help people resume their normal activities of daily living. “Joint pain can cause disruption of simple things like cooking, cleaning and getting dressed. Everything becomes more laborious, and people are often inhibited from participating in recreational activities and exercise. Chiropractic adjustments can provide proper biomechanical function through joint manipulation and corrective and functional exercises to strengthen the muscles that support joints,” explains Alebiosu. Functional medicine and clinical nutrition work to find the underlying cause for an inflammatory reaction that leads to join paint, and at Aligned, that starts with a thorough clinical assessment. Cindy Howard is a doctor of chiropractic and the director of functional medicine at Aligned. “We do a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s lifestyle, habits, food sensitivities and condition, then diagnostic testing to assess their individual biochemistry. This gives us the tools to make behavioral recommendations and a roadmap for further healing,” says Howard. Functional medicine also incorporates factors such as proper sleep, emotional stress and hormone levels. We are what we eat, and diet plays an integral role in proper joint health. Any modality of treatment that Aligned recommends will utilize this. “We look for any potential nutrient deficiencies that could lead to increased risk of injury and suggest avoiding foods with additives, chemicals and sugars. In general, I recommend eating nutrient-dense foods that contain calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. Nuts, beans and dark, leafy vegetables are all great sources,” says Howard. Alebisou notes that an anti-inflammatory diet works well for many patients. “Omega-3 fatty acids, turmeric, ginger and green tea can all help reduce swelling and sensitivity,” he says. Although exercise can be difficult for someone experiencing constant pain, activity can actually help alleviate symptoms. “Staying mobile helps to keep bones and joints strong, and there is value to the useit-or-lose-it approach. At the same time, for someone who may have chronic joint

pain, they want to be mindful of overuse,” says Howard. “The exercise doesn’t have to be vigorous. Walking can increase blood flow, and it helps lubricates the joints of the knees, hips and upper limbs,” says Kay. Whether joint pain is the result of arthritis, overuse, postsurgical changes or a new or old sports injury, the goal at Aligned is the same. They strive to help the patient attain relief so that they can return to optimal function as soon as possible and restore their lifestyle. “Instead of simply prescribing medicines, we help you design a plan to return to optimum health,” says Cayce. WHY OUR BODY LOVES YOGA

Gentle Poses Foster Flexibility

A

by Marlaina Donato

lthough media coverage of yoga often highlights advanced yoga poses, the practice is not reserved solely for super-flexible folks. Benefits are available to everyone of any age or physical type. “Many people assume that yoga requires the ability to be a contortionist. Yoga is an internal process and can meet us wherever we are,” says yoga therapist Kimberly Carson, of Mindful Yoga Works, in Portland, Oregon. Springing from the theory that half of our capacity to become more flexible lies less in the muscles than in the nervous system, this calming practice helps the body release tension and achieve a suppler state.

Why it Works Yoga poses don’t need to be intense to have a significant effect. Gentle, regular practice can improve range of motion, increase muscle strength and promote circulation of the synovial fluid surrounding joints that supplies oxygen and nutrients to cartilage. “Basic yoga is just as beneficial as more advanced ideas of yoga, especially in terms of body awareness,” says Piper Abbott, an integrative yoga therapist and 26

Chicago

NAChicago.com

teacher who owns Burlington Yoga, in Burlington, Vermont. “Where our attention goes, energy flows. When we’re holding a posture and directing this focused awareness into the sensation of a stretch, we’re learning to read our body.” Agility is usually associated with muscles and joints, but underlying flexibility goes deep to further enhance wellness. Stiff muscles often go hand-in-hand with stiff arteries, for example, but appropriate exercise can have a positive effect there, too. According to studies by physical therapist Miriam Cortez-Cooper, Ph.D., and her colleagues during her tenure at the University of Texas at Austin, stretching exercises performed for 11 weeks improved flexibility of the carotid artery—the main vessel that transports blood to the brain—by 23 percent. Such an increase did not result from aerobic exercise or strength training.

Every Body Can Benefit “Yoga is truly for any and every body. Flexibility or a lack thereof can be found in anatomies of any shape. Many options for poses exist to help you find the version

that works best for you. Yoga props such as blocks and straps can provide support to encourage experimenting while ensuring a safe approach,” says Anna Guest-Jelley, CEO of Curvy Yoga, in Portland, Oregon. She loves sharing the value of yoga with people of all sizes. “What’s important is working wherever you are within your current range of motion, so your body can open to new movements appropriately.” Maintaining a regular practice offers an opportunity for individuals living with chronic pain or undergoing cancer treatment to feel more at ease. “Even in cases of severe fibromyalgia, some movement is better than none, and can foster better sleep. Restorative sleep can help to heal microtears in muscles, which can be common. Non-goal-oriented yoga also offers layers of benefits for cancer patients, both supporting physical function, as well as offering a way to practice kindness towards the body/ mind during tough times,” says Carson. For seniors, yoga is an excellent way to foster better flexibility, even in the presence of osteoarthritis. Studies conducted by Dr. Sharon Kolasinski, of the University of Pennsylvania, found that Iyengar yoga reduced joint stiffness and pain reduction during an eight-week period in people with knee osteoarthritis. Chair yoga, though popular with seniors, can introduce unnecessary risk if not tailored appropriately for those with osteoporosis, Carson cautions. “It’s important for older adults to find classes taught by appropriately trained instructors. Inappropriate chair sitting itself can compromise bone health, so teachers trained in spinal health and planes of action are recommended.” No matter the level of an individual’s agility, improved flexibility is a boon, especially when it goes beyond the physical to embrace mental and spiritual aspects. Abbott remarks, “Yoga has taught me not only how to move and relate to my body, but how to gracefully adjust to change and the challenges of life.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer and authors books related to the fields of alternative health and spirituality. GLOSSARY

Aerial: Originated in California and now in several countries. Sometimes branded as AntiGravity Yoga, aerial incorporates traditional yoga asanas with the use of a hammock or sling and combines elements of Pilates and dance. This style is said to deliver benefits on emotional and psychological levels and has a fun component. 28

Ananda: A form of gentle hatha yoga

with an emphasis on meditation. Ananda combines classic yoga postures with breathing and silent affirmations to attune with higher levels of body sense, energy and silent inner awareness. As an inner-directed practice, it has less appeal to those desiring a more athletic or aerobic experience.

Anusara: Anusara means “go with the

flow,” and blends spirituality with inner/ outer alignment and balanced energetic actions. Developed by John Friend in 1997, this style urges students to think of poses as artistic expressions of the heart. Individual abilities and limitations are deeply respected and honored, so Anusara yoga can be helpful for everyone and is good for beginners.

Chair: Practiced sitting or standing, it

uses a chair as a support/prop. Asanas are adapted from traditional hatha yoga. It benefits older individuals and those that are body-challenged. Flexibility is enhanced, as well as mind-body awareness.

Hatha: Hatha yoga is the foundational discipline on which nearly all other styles are based. In Sanskrit, ha represents the sun and tha, the moon—hence, the practice is designed to bring the yin and yang, light and dark, masculine and feminine aspects and polarities into balance. Essentially, hatha yoga brings all aspects of life together. A class described as hatha will likely include slow-paced stretching,

Aqua: Also known as water or pool yoga. Aqua yoga is practiced in water—a warm indoor pool or natural body of water. Asanas are adapted to work with the buoyancy provided by water and have a positive effect on joints. This form is a viable option for older individuals or anyone else with physical conditions that prevent them from practicing land yoga. Its benefits include lymphatic stimulation and improved range of motion.

Y

oga, a holistic art and practice that originated some 5,000 years ago in India, aims to integrate mind, body and spirit. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to yoke or unite, and refers to the joining of body with mind and mind with soul to achieve health, balance, tranquility and enlightenment. Individuals of every age and physical condition can benefit from the regular practice of yoga, which has been proven to enhance flexibility, strength, stamina and concentration. Using a combination of asanas, or postures, and breathing techniques, yoga works to induce deep relaxation and reduce stress, tone the body and organs, increase vitality, and improve circulation and energy flow. Uplifting and meditative, yoga can be applied as a spiritual practice, as well. Although many schools, or styles, of yoga exist, most differences derive from the primary focus of the practitioner’s attention: precise alignment of the body; holding of the asanas; flow between the postures; breath and movement coordination; or inner awareness and meditation. No particular style is better than another, and many students practice more than one.

style that is light on meditation, ashtanga yoga employs a fast-paced series of flowing poses to build strength, flexibility and stamina. Developed by Indian yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, ashtanga’s progressively difficult postures are synchronized with a loud breath (called ujyaii breath in Sanskrit) and are designed to produce intense internal heat and purifying sweat in order to detoxify muscles and organs. The room is usually heated to warm muscles and increase flexibility. Preferred by many athletes, this style is too intense and demanding for most beginners.

Ashtanga: A physically demanding

asanas, or postures, that are not too difficult, simple breathing exercises and perhaps seated meditation. Hatha yoga classes provide a good starting point for beginners to learn basic poses and relaxation techniques.

Hot Yoga: Hot yoga is performed in a heated room using varying temperatures and yoga poses. A Bikram yoga room is set at a minimum of 105° Fahrenheit with about 40 percent humidity, performing 26 prescribed asanas. Both forms of heated yoga help to speed up metabolism and improve circulation.

Integral: A gentle style of yoga brought to this country in

1966 by Sri Swami Satchidananda. Classes are structured to balance physical effort with relaxation, and include breathing practices, chanting and both guided and silent meditation. Integral yoga is suitable for beginners and helpful for more advanced students that wish to deepen their physical and spiritual awareness.

Iyengar: Noted for precise alignment and symmetry of postures, the development of balance and the use of props such as blocks, balls and belts, the Iyengar style of yoga was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, based on his exceptional understanding of how the body works. Poses are held longer than usual. Iyengar is a good style for beginners, but can challenge seasoned practitioners, as well.

Kundalini: A powerful, enlightening style that incorporates mantras (chanting), meditation, visualization, breathing and guided relaxation with precise postures. According to Hindu philosophy, kundalini is a concentrated form of prana, or life force, represented by a coiled, sleeping serpent said to reside at the base of the spine. When breath and movement awaken the serpent (energy), it moves up the spine through each of the seven chakras (energy centers) of the body, bringing energy and bliss. Once a closely guarded secret in India, kundalini yoga was first brought to the West in 1969, and has been known to help with addictions and releasing endorphins in the body. Kundalini will not appeal to everyone and should be practiced under the supervision of an experienced teacher.

Prenatal: This yoga style is

specifically tailored for pregnant women during all stages of pregnancy. Its combination of stretching, focus and breathwork make it ideal for improving strength and decreasing

stress levels in preparation for childbirth. It might also alleviate pregnancy-related headaches, nausea and back pain.

Restorative: Distinguished by the use of props, this form of yoga aims to relax the muscles, calm the mind and open up the body through slow movements and passive stretching. Maintaining balance and holding gentle stretches for up to 20 minutes is made easier through the use of blocks, bolsters and blankets that support deep relaxation. SUP: An acronym for stand up paddle-

board, SUP yoga can be practiced on a lake or other calm body of water. Hatha and vinyasa asanas are employed with the intention of challenging the practitioner to distribute their weight to maintain balance. Benefits include improved core strength, circulation and balance.

Svaroopa: A style that helps each student discover their bliss. The Sanskrit word svaroopa means “the true nature of being”, and Svaroopa yoga is sometimes called the yoga of alignment and compassion. Attention to alignment in specifically chosen poses helps to soften the body’s connective tissues and ease spinal tension. Blocks and bolsters may be used to allow for deeper muscle release. The style is suitable for beginners and useful for those recovering from injury. Viniyoga: A transformative, slower and more individualized

form of yoga that emphasizes gentle flow and coordinated breath with movement, Viniyoga is holistic in its approach and teaches the student how to apply the yoga tools of poses, chanting, breathing and meditation. Function is stressed over form in this style. Viniyoga is recommended for beginners and seniors, as well as those in chronic pain or healing from injury or disease.

Vinyasa: A challenging style that matches breath to movement.

Vinyasa yoga poses incorporate alignment principles and are woven together in a flowing practice that is both intense and dancelike. Translated from Sanskrit, Vinyasa means “without obstacle”. The style is best suited to energetic, physically fit students.

Yin: Developed by yoga teachers Paulie Zink and Paul Grilley

to improve joint mobility and flexibility through holding asanas for up to five minutes or longer, yin yoga complements more intense practices such as Bikram, increases circulation in connective tissue and fosters inner stillness.

Identification Helps

The term “arthritis” can conjure images of aging cartilage worn thin by years of overuse. Yet this common type, known as osteoarthritis, is just one of many joint pain culprits. Rheumatoid arthritis, which manifests in swelling and pain in the hands, wrists, feet or toes, arises when the body’s immune system attacks

hirty-seven percent of American adults 18 and older suffer from arthritis—a catch-all term for a dozen varieties of joint disease—according to the nonprofit Arthritis Foundation. One in two men and two in three women 65 or older may have it, estimates a recent Boston University study. Due to increasing obesity rates and autoimmune disorders, it’s also impacting 8 million Millennials, reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “I’m seeing higher rates, more severe cases and more of them in younger people. 30

It’s an epidemic no one is talking about,” says Dr. Susan Blum, a Rye Brook, New York, physician and author of Healing Arthritis: Your 3-Step Guide to Conquering Arthritis Naturally. About 65 percent of patients try to treat joint pain with daily anti-inflammatory drugs that can damage the stomach and kidneys. Many work and exercise less due to pain, making arthritis the leading cause of disability. More than 1 million undergo expensive, risky surgeries annually, with hip and knee replacements performed twice as often now as in 2000.

itself, destroying tissue around the joints. Spondyloarthritis inflames the spine and sometimes the eyes and gut. Infections like Lyme disease, parvovirus and hepatitis B can also ignite arthritic joint pain. Inflammation may exacerbate them all, so an anti-inflammatory program can typically provide relief, says Blum. Serious forms might require more aggressive treatments; a visit with an integrative clinician is an important first step.

Get Weight in Check

About one-third of obese people have arthritis, and research shows that with every pound lost, joint pain diminishes— the lighter the load, the less the pressure on joints. A Wake Forest University study of knee osteoarthritis patients showed that with each 10 pounds lost, 40 pounds of pressure is lifted from the knee.

Although conventional medicine maintains that drugs, surgery and reduced activity are inevitable, a new generation of clinicians disagree. They’ve seen how by losing weight, fighting inflammation with wholesome food and supplements, exercising smart and exploring science-backed integrative therapies, patients can manage the root causes of joint pain and find relief. “We have many tools at our disposal to halt or slow the progression of arthritis so most people never have to have surgery,” says Doctor of Naturopathy Casey Seenauth, a staff physician at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine Pain Relief Center, in Tempe, Arizona.

“But it’s not simply about the load on the joints,” says Blum. Fat cells release compounds called inflammatory cytokines, which can boost inflammation and pain. And new research from the University of Rochester, in New York, suggests that obesity may also impair the gut microbiome (beneficial bacteria lining the gastrointestinal tract), further exacerbating arthritis. “There is no doubt that the gut bacteria are involved in the onset and perpetuation of inflammation and pain in arthritis,” says Blum. When researchers fed mice the equivalent of a “cheeseburger and milkshake” diet for 12 weeks, doubling their body fat, they found more pro-inflammatory bacteria in their colon, more cartilage deterioration than in lean mice and more inflammation in their knees.

Healing the Gut Heals Joints

Blum explains that dysbiosis, an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the intestinal tract, can damage its fragile lining, allowing bits of bacteria to enter the bloodstream and ignite an autoimmune response. Dysbiosis can be kick-started by antibiotics, drugs like proton pump inhibitors, bad diet or stress, says Blum, who battled autoimmune arthritis after her son had a traumatic accident. For curbing arthritis through the gut microbiome, the science is young. A few small human studies conducted in China and

Finland suggest that ingesting specific strains of Lactobacillus (including casei, acidophilus, reuteri and rhamnosus) and Bifidobacterium (bifidum and infantis) may decrease inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. In the University of Rochester study, overweight mice fed prebiotics (indigestible fibers that good bacteria feed on) had less arthritis progression. Blum recommends taking antimicrobial herbs like oregano oil to heal a gut overgrown with bad bacteria and a highquality probiotic supplement to replenish good bacteria. She also suggests ditching processed food and products with refined sugar, along with known allergens like gluten, soy and dairy, which can spawn inflammation. Avoid nightshade vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes and peppers, which anecdotally have been suggested to aggravate joint pain. Overall, strive for a plant-based diet high in fiber, colorful, antioxidant-rich vegetables and “good” fats. One recent Michigan State University study found that when osteoarthritis patients switched to a plant-based diet for six weeks, they experienced less pain than those in the meat-eating control group.

exercise depends partly on which joints are affected. He notes that properly executed strength training exercises like lifting weights can stabilize muscles around joints, easing strain and preventing arthritis from accelerating. Low-impact aerobic exercises like cycling or swimming can fuel the production and flushing of fluids through the joints without overloading them. Tai chi can improve range of motion. Even running, long falsely maligned as a precursor to arthritis, can help prompt cartilage cells to divide and replenish faster, research suggests. A study of 75,000 runners by researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in California, found that they were less likely to develop osteoarthritis of the knee than less active people. A subsequent paper by University of Illinois researchers found that while each running step levels more force on joints than a walking step, the foot hits the ground less often, so when it comes to wear and tear, it approximates the effect of walking. “Running doesn’t set people up for earlier development of osteoarthritis, and can in fact be protective,” says Gregg, stressing that proper form, a soft running surface and moderation are all important.

When joint pain begins to flare up, a carefully chosen workout may be exactly what’s needed for relief. A.J. Gregg, a chiropractor in Flagstaff, Arizona, says, “There is an element of ‘use-it-or-lose it’.” The proper

it down with a centrifuge to isolate platelets loaded with growth-promoting compounds. Then, they inject the platelets into the joint. A study of 78 patients with knee osteoarthritis published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that those receiving one or two PRP injections had significantly less pain and better function six months later, while the placebo group worsened. In prolotherapy, doctors inject natural substances like dextrose and saline into the joint two to three times for six to eight weeks to promote production of collagen and other tissue-regenerating compounds. “Rather than inject a steroid, which provides a short-term fix by suppressing the immune response, we inject a concentrated solution that ignites the body’s natural healing response,” says Seenauth.

A Mind-Body Approach

Natural joint pain remedies also encompass acupuncture and meditation. In the UK, a University of York meta-review of 114 studies exploring 22 integrative or complementary therapies for arthritis, including strength and aerobic exercise training, found acupuncture to have the most studies completed and the most promising results. “Acupuncture can be considered as one of the more effective physical treatments for alleviating osteoarthritis knee pain in the

short term,” concluded the authors. University of Auckland researchers, in New Zealand, recruited 42 rheumatoid arthritis patients and assigned half to a program of mindfulness-based stress reduction, described by researchers as “the cultivation of nonjudgmental attention to unwanted thoughts, feelings and bodily experiences via meditation.” While the meditation group saw no change in levels of inflammatory markers in the blood or the number of swollen joints, they did report significantly less morning stiffness, tenderness and pain. The patients, in essence, trained themselves to experience their symptoms differently. “Pain is not just about nerves detecting a noxious stimulant and sending the signal to your brain. The brain has a whole system for processing these signals, and is also informed by your experiences, emotions and cognition,” says Seenauth, who recommends mindfulness meditation to all of his patients. “With the right nutrition, therapies and state of mind,” he says, “you can significantly reduce the impact joint pain has on your life.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. Yoga Meets Life’s Essential Questions

Tapping into Our True Nature by Michael A. Singer

I

n 1972, I experienced a profound spiritual awakening and went into seclusion to focus on my inner growth. This awakening helped me see that I’m not my mind—I am the observer of my mind. I watched this chattering mind creating an obstacle to self-realization and true happiness. I also came to realize another clear truth: The outside world isn’t personal. It’s unfolding according to all the forces

that have taken place from the beginning of creation. Call it science or the will of God—it doesn’t matter. What matters is we didn’t do it, and it isn’t supposed to match what we want. When we see this, we can transcend the limited mind and embrace the true nature of our being. We’ve each developed personal likes and dislikes resulting from life experiences that have left good or unfavorable

impressions within us. These impressions determine how we view the world, and they limit our ability to enjoy life. We can begin learning how to release these impressions by letting go of the little things that irritate us for no reason—like the weather or someone’s attitude. We have a tendency to resist uncomfortable feelings, so we try to fix and control our environment. A commitment to yoga demands that we let go of our personal reactions and use each experience in life to go beyond our comfort zone. The science of yoga is centered on realizing the essential self—the one within who is simply aware. It comes from thousands of years of enlightened beings devoting their lives to the questions: “Who am I? Why do my thoughts and emotions change so much?” This inquiry helps us find the true self inside, the self beyond personality and the mind’s fears and opinions. Progress happens through cultivating awareness. The simplest approach is to ask: “Who is in here looking through these eyes and experiencing this world?” Don’t try to answer. Just relax back into the essence of your being—the one who sees—and experience life from this place of awareness. When we’re clear and comfortable with who we are inside, life becomes beautiful—regardless of what is going on around us. We can then help raise the world for the better. There is freedom and peace in that.

Meditation Improves Long-Term Cognition Cognitive gains that people experience from an intense meditation retreat can persist for at least seven years and slow age-related cognitive decline, a new study shows. Researchers from the University of California at Davis followed up with 60 people that had participated in a three-month retreat in which they meditated in a group and alone for a total of about eight hours a day. Immediately afterwards, the meditators showed improvements in holding sustained attention— the ability to stay focused on a task or object—a key measure of cognitive function. Seven years later, researchers found that those significant gains were partly maintained, and that older participants that diligently practiced meditation didn’t showtypical patterns of age-related attention declines.

A

new biography, John E. Fetzer and the Quest for the New Age, by Brian C. Wilson, Ph.D., charts the career of the influential radio pioneer, media entrepreneur, philanthropist and owner of the Detroit Tigers baseball team for almost 30 years beginning in 1956, revealing his powerful motivation provided by spiritual influences. Fetzer started a long preoccupation with radio in 1922 and built an empire to become one of the 400 richest Americans by participating in new communication technology, including radio, television and even cable. He was also a longtime board member of the National Association of Broadcasters. Fetzer employed his wealth to open the doors of higher consciousness, spiritual empowerment, paranormal insights and energy medicine to humanity through study for more than 60 years. He attributed much of his success to spiritual practices. Meditation, psychic consultants, pendulums, water dowsing and other occult practices featured prominently in his decisionmaking process. To insure that his legacy to illuminate the horizon between science and spirituality would continue along with his mission to elevate mankind’s conscious evolution, he made endowments that include The John E. Fetzer Memorial Trust, The John E. Fetzer Institute and The Fetzer-Franklin Fund. Fetzer said, “I feel that we are on the threshold of a new order, where people will be seeking enlightened change... This will all come about with the infusion of spirituality into science.” Wilson, a professor of American religious history in the Department of Comparative Religion at Western Michigan University, discovered that for those 36

seeking validation that business success and enlightenment can actually work hand-in-hand, Fetzer’s extraordinary life stands as evidence. He uses Fetzer’s quest to chronicle the breadth and depth of the historic emergence of the New Age movement. Wilson writes, “Originally called the Fetzer Foundation, the Institute was created in Kalamazoo in the 1950s. In the 1980s, when Fetzer was beginning to wind down his business activities, he decided to use his fortune to endow the Institute permanently.” The author notes, “Fetzer, born in Indiana in 1901 at the turn of the century, traveled along two parallel paths throughout his life. Influenced by the prevailing values of the time and his mother’s faith, he joined the Seventh-Day Adventists, but a deep yearning for more ‘freedom of spirit’ than the church offered was a springboard for exploring the insights of emerging spiritual leaders, movements and approaches—Eastern and Western—including Theosophy, Freemasonry, UFOology, parapsychology and Buddhism. He was drawn toward a philosophy that offered personal experience of ‘unity’ or ‘oneness’, as it is called today, seeing the individual as part of the universal whole, with direct access to that master intelligence, connected to all things. “Although it might seem a bit out of fashion today, John Fetzer wholeheart-

edly believed in the sacred destiny of the United States to inaugurate the New Age. Fetzer always revered the nation’s founding fathers, especially Washington, Jefferson and Franklin, and he believed that the constitutional democracy that they helped to create was no accident, but was inspired by the divine will.” Wilson explains that for Fetzer, the spiritual world and its practical effects were closely intertwined, noting that he often said, “Money is energy.” “For him, spirituality was a recognition that all is spirit, which he conceptualized as an eternal, conscious energy that, if one were open to it, would inevitably lead one back to the ‘great central source,’” says Wilson. “Everything consists of this energy— even money. And if one understands this connection and taps into it psychically, then wealth and success, he believed, were within one’s grasp. This meant to him that money was to be used in the service of good, since business success and wealth could only be spiritually uplifting if used for love and service.” Wilson explains that although they were very wealthy, Fetzer and his wife, Rhea, always lived frugally, spending most of their lives in a modest home in a middle-class Kalamazoo neighborhood. “For Fetzer, wealth was not for self-aggrandizement, which would have embarrassed him, but rather for the pursuit of a spiritual mission in service to the world,” says Wilson. “Fetzer believed in karma, and John’s approach was to serve first, and then money came back to him. The lesson here is to weigh what legacy you can leave for the world, and while it may not be funded by great wealth, it can be the fruits of your time, efforts and gifts from which others can enjoy and prosper in the future.”

Migratory Birds Threatened by Rule Change

A coalition of national environmental groups led by the National Audubon Society filed a lawsuit in May against the U.S. Department of the Interior challenging the federal administration’s move last December to eliminate longstanding protections for waterfowl, raptors and songbirds under the 100-year-old Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). The intent is to weaken enforcement on businesses, municipalities and individuals to prevent “incidental” deaths of birds, which would lessen requirements for their protection from electrical power lines, towers, buildings and other hazards. The risk of liability under the MBTA has provided incentives for the oil and gas industry, wind energy development companies and power transmission line operators to work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to minimize bird deaths. The new policy eliminates these incentives to reduce and mitigate foreseeable impacts of operations on migratory birds. “One of the first conservation laws, the MBTA sparked 100 years of conservation leadership in this country,” says Sarah Greenberger, Audubon’s senior vice president of conservation policy. “It defies all facts for the Department of the Interior to suggest that this law is somehow broken when we have a century of evidence that says otherwise.” Urge senators and other representatives to uphold the MBTA via an easy form and single click under the Take Action tab at Audubon.org.

“I’m a fan of techniques for getting more plants on our plates,” says Greger. “Try using meat as more of a condiment or flavoring. Find entrées you already like and make them more plant-friendly. For instance, try replacing the taco meat with lentils spiced with traditional taco seasonings.” Other helpful tips include tapping a family member, friend or colleague eager to support healthy choices. It can be difficult to be the only one eating healthfully in any group, but having a support system can help make the transition easier.

wellness movement. The conclusions he’s drawn from his own practice are supported by the largest study to date on disease risk factors, the Global Burden of Disease, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “The number one cause of death and cause of disability in the United States is our diet. Genetics loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger. Genes are not our destiny,” Greger says.

According to Jennifer Di Noia, Ph.D., of William Paterson University of New Jersey, in Wayne, superfoods have 17 nutrients in common that are critical to the prevention of chronic disease, based on findings of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Institute of Medicine. Phytochemicals are the body’s best source of antioxidants to help fortify cells against cancer and premature aging, as well as reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of dementia. Leafy greens such as collards, beet tops and certain lettuces, along with cruciferous vegetables, pack the most punch. Surprisingly, popular kale came in at number 15 on the CDC list of 41 superfoods, scoring only 49 out of 100 points for phytonutrient value. Results of an in vitro study published by the journal Nutrition Research spotlight the cholesterol-reducing benefits of steamed collard greens and their ability to boost the body’s natural cholesterol blockers by 13 percent more than the pharmaceutical drug Cholestyramine.

eart disease and chronic illnesses like diabetes, Alzheimer’s and inflammatory bowel disease are reaching alarming rates in this country. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 71 percent of all healthcare spending in the U.S. goes toward treating people with multiple chronic conditions. Plant-dominant diets have a profound and universal effect on disease prevention, and often pose the potential for reversal. Enlightened institutions like the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, in Loma Linda, California, are now offering resident physicians specialized studies in lifestyle medicine based on therapeutic applications of diet. Founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, international speaker and bestselling author Dr. Michael Greger, whose How Not to Die book now has a companion cookbook, is at the forefront of the growing conscious eating for 38

Eating superfoods slows inflammation, a major factor in myriad health conditions, and fosters an internal environment that opposes cancer cells. According to Greger, incorporating nutrient-dense foods into our daily diet need not feel like a chore or sacrifice. “If you eat junk, not only are you feeding your precious body crummy fuel, but you’re missing out on choices that are health-promoting,” says Greger, whose free Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen phone app helps make the switch easy and intriguing.

Greger reminds us that changing our diet can be initially daunting, but better health is worth the effort, as exemplified by one of his leading cases. “I met with an obese, middle-aged man with Type 2 diabetes in the beginning stages of diabetic neuropathy. After a month of being on a plant-based diet, he had reversed his diabetes and his nerve pain disappeared. Within three months, he no longer needed medications for high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Two decades

Peach and Lime Granita

“We love quick, nutritious, refreshing summer salads that allow us to recharge our bodies after hot day in the farm fields. We often add roasted walnuts to this salad for more protein,” says Jen Miller.

Yields: 4 to 6 servings 3 med peaches, peeled and sliced 2 Tbsp sugar, or less/more to taste Zest and juice of one lime Water as needed Sugar the peaches and let stand for 20 minutes or so. Stir in the lime juice and zest Use a handheld blender to crush the peaches, adding enough water to get things going, if necessary. Transfer the blended peach mixture to a shallow pan and place in the freezer. Every couple hours use the tines of a fork to break up the granita into crystals. To serve, remove the granita from the freezer and let stand for a few minutes to loosen. 40

Remember, just because school has started and fall schedules are in full swing, your farmers’ market is still open and full of wonderful products,” says Janie Maxwell, MS, RDN, LDN, executive director of the Illinois Farmers Market Association (ILFMA). She recommends, “The one food I can’t get enough of is fresh tomatoes. I wait all year for tomatoes and enjoy their wonderful, fresh taste. Before the season ends, try this recipe and if possible, make batches and freeze to help extend the season. This isn’t conventional tomato sauce made with San Marzano or Roma tomatoes. It is full of tomato chunks and tastes like fresh tomatoes. It might be good idea to serve it in a bowl, because it is not as thick as traditional tomato sauce. Try serving it with a fresh mozzarella burrata over pasta.”

Fresh Tomato Sauce Yields: 4 servings 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced 4 cups fresh tomatoes, roughly chopped, any variety or size 1 Tbsp fresh oregano, finely chopped 1 Tbsp fresh basil, cut in very thin strips Salt and pepper to taste Heat the olive oil in a stainless steel or enamel pot.

ZERO WASTE

LIFESTYLE

Ways to Make Far Less Trash by Avery Mack

I

n manufacturing, a zero waste policy means designing products so that all resources are used or reused. It’s a concept Bea Johnson, author of Zero Waste Home: The Ultimate Guide to Simplifying Your Life by Reducing Your Waste, embraced for her family a decade ago in Mill Valley, California. “My goal was to simplify our lives,” she says. “We found a zero waste lifestyle isn’t what we expected; it’s better. It’s good for the environment and for our family.” Johnson reports achieving 40 percent savings in annual household costs. “Voluntary simplicity has also changed our daily routines. Simple living focuses on experiences versus things, and we find we have more free time,” she says. “Our minimalist wardrobes now fit into carry-on bags for travel.”

A Doable Personal Goal “Don’t expect to reach zero. Go for zero-ish,” counsels Celia Ristow, a freelance writer who blogs at Litterless.com. In 2017, Ristow and two friends, Moira Kelley and Bailey Warren, started a grassroots group called Zero Waste Chicago to raise awareness and connect locals with needed resources to reduce trash. “We speak at grocery stores, community events, schools, colleges and to employees on their lunch hour. We love how responding readers send suggestions and outlets for reusing items,” says Ristow. Local efforts can take off when people find like-minded others through using hash tags like #zerowastechicago on Instagram, search for a local blogger or host a mini-meet-up in a grocery that sells in bulk or at a coffee shop that uses ceramic cups or no plastic stirrers. 42

Chicago

NAChicago.com

Similar grassroots organizations are active in Colorado (EcoCycle. org/home) and Seattle (EcoCollectiveSeattle.com). “Zero waste seems difficult to imagine in the U.S. People think change is costly and time-consuming,” Johnson says. “My vocation is to shatter these misconceptions. Follow the 5 R’s: refuse what you don’t need, reduce what you need, reuse, recycle and rot. Refuse single-use plastics and junk mail, reduce the volume of clothing items and sports equipment, buy used, recycle the unwanted and compost (rot) food waste, lint, hair and floor sweepings. It’s not that complicated.” Due to her experience, Johnson can now store a year’s worth of waste in a pint-sized Mason jar. “Inside is deteriorated foam from headphones, a dental retainer, silicone caulk from the sink, fruit and veggie stickers, clothing labels, plastic mini-bumpers from cabinet corners I replaced with felt and a plastic-coated spike from the dishwasher,” she says. “I’m still amazed when people have a use for something I don’t want or need. Start by saying no to flyers, freebies, party favors, business cards, plastics, excessive packaging and junk mail. Accepting them creates more. Refusing such clutter is the first rule to a less wasteful lifestyle.” Kathryn Kellogg, the Vallejo, California, author of the Going Zero Waste blog and a content creator for Pela Case, a Canadian eco-friendly smartphone case maker, offers many zero waste swaps. “I use silicone cupcake liners instead of paper, bar soap in lieu of plastic-packaged body wash and make my own lip balm.” She also has alternatives for sponges, plastic wrap, cooking pans and toothbrushes. Consider her 31-day challenge at GoingZeroWaste.com/31-day-video-challenge. She notes, “Since I started working toward zero waste, I have more confidence, am able to speak up about less waste and am mindful when I shop.”

A World View In May, Johnson toured 16 countries in 17 days giving presentations. “Surprisingly, we often had to open another room because interest was higher than expected. In Russia, they broadcasted my talk to 17 cities,” she says. Johnson learned that many countries have no waste collection or recycling programs. Plastic bottles, bags and trash litter many landscapes. “Life in the United States is different. Here, we have bigger houses, need more and create more waste. Elsewhere, grocery shopping is done daily instead of weekly, produce is local, seasonal and sustainable instead of imported,” she observes. “In a way, it’s easier to go zero waste there because they’re using just what they need. Everyone deserves a place to live and life’s necessities. Past that comfort level, it’s excess.” Johnson sees rapid changes underway in consumer thinking and is hopeful looking forward. “I don’t want to tell others how to live. I just want to share our experiences. The United States’ example has a huge impact worldwide. Zero waste is the necessary lifestyle of the future, and it begins at home.” Connect with the freelance writer via AveryMack@mindspring.com.

Hawks in Autumn by Sheryl DeVore

S

tanding atop a 190-foot-high former landfill at Greene Valley Forest Preserve, in Naperville, Jeff Smith gets a 360-degree bird’s-eye view of creatures he loves to watch—hawks. It’s September, and these birds of prey are migrating south for the winter. Their sheer size and antics in the sky, along with the stories they can tell about the environment, attract local wildlife enthusiasts to watch and count them. Smith and other members of the DuPage Birding Club will count hawks through the last cold days of autumn at Greene Valley Forest Preserve. Vic Berardi, of Gurnee, and others count hawks at Illinois Beach State Park, in Zion, beginning sometime at the end of August through early December. Berardi started the state park watch nearly 20 years ago, and it’s now run by Paul and Janice Sweet, of Zion. In 2013, Berardi helped start a hawk watch at Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve, near Highwood.

He and other volunteers count birds called raptors—large avian species with sharp talons to snatch their prey. Species include red-tailed hawks, peregrine falcons, eagles, American kestrels, turkey vultures, merlins and osprey. Other nonraptor large migratory birds counted in the fall include sandhill cranes. These serious hawk watchers tabulate data and send it to The Hawk Migration Association of North America, which hosts a website showing the population trends of hawks. However, anyone that wants to enjoy a free show featuring big birds doing sometimes crazy antics in the sky can stop by these locations in the Chicago region in autumn to observe and learn. “It’s a mystery that unfolds. You don’t know what you’re going to see any particular day,” says Berardi. “Some days, it’s just a sight to behold; all these hawks coming through in waves.” He notes that hawks

migrate on almost any day during the fall. “Basically, they are riding the good, steady winds coming from behind them. The sun heats the ground and the heat rises, creating thermals, or columns of warm air hawks can use to hitch rides and save energy.” Some birds, like broad-winged hawks, red-tailed hawks, osprey and eagles, ride on those thermals. “They try to get as much lift as they possibly can from the thermals and get up as high as they can, and then cruise or glide until they get to the next thermal,” Berardi says. What makes the Illinois Beach State Park and Fort Sheridan sites great places to observe the birds is the fact they are located along Lake Michigan. Hawks don’t want to go over that large body of water, so they tend to hug the shoreline until they find a better passageway, bringing them into the view of hawk watchers. Hawks, at the top of the food chain, are considered indicator species. That means when their populations change, the health of the environment is also likely changing. In her book Silent Spring, Rachel Carson cited decreasing numbers of immature bald eagles seen at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, one of the oldest hawk watches in the country, in eastern Pennsylvania, and attributed the decline to the use of DDT. From the more years of data gathered, the more conclusions can be drawn, Berardi says. He has learned through years of observation and data collecting that broad-winged hawks, which migrate in

Hawks and other birds of prey migrate through Chicago in spring and fall; some also nest here in the summer. Here are three of the easier species to identify in the sky during migration.

Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve features a place to watch hawks during migration.

Birdwatching Basics

eco brief

Here’s what beginning hawk watchers need to know to prepare for a few hours in the field. n Choose a day when winds are blowing steadily, typically from the north or northwest. n Dress in layers. It can be cold along the lake front or at the top of the hill. n Bring binoculars, lawn chairs, blankets, food and water. n The best time to view hawks is mid-morning through mid-to-late afternoon. large groups, are more prevalent at the Greene Valley Hawk Watch than they are at Illinois Beach State Park. “I think they’re following the Fox River, and they are so high up they likely see Lake Michigan and avoid flying over there,” Berardi says. Different species come through at different times at all three sites. “At Greene Valley in early September, we see turkey vultures and red-tailed hawks, then come the peregrine falcons,” Smith says. “That’s a big treat. If there’s a good wind and other hawks are on the wind, hunting the hillside and the grasslands, peregrines come by and start playing tag with them.” In mid-September, large groups of broad-winged hawks in the hundreds, and occasionally in the thousands, can be seen moving together on the thermals. Later on in the season, eagles start flying by. “We keep a tally board for the public to come watch, and they’ll stop by and ask what you’re seeing. There’s always somebody there to answer questions,” Smith says. Not all hawks come within easy view, which makes them difficult to identify. Over the years, Berardi has learned to do so by observing their shape, flight pattern and any noticeable markings on the bird. Sheryl DeVore is a Chicago area writer, editor, educator, photographer and author of three books on nature. For more information, email Sheryl.Devore@comcast.net.

How to Get There Greene Valley is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends in September and October. An access drive to the hawk watch, the top of a former landfill, is south of 75th Street off Greene Road, in Naperville. Counters are typically at the Illinois Beach State Park north unit from around 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily during fall. From Route 173 and Sheridan Road in Zion, drive north to 17th Street. Turn east to enter the park, and then right at the sign for the Sand Prairie Day Use Area. Park near the first pavilion on the right. Outhouses and picnic tables are available. The Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve, just opened after renovation, contains parking spaces for 50 cars, picnic tables, benches and outhouses. Enter Fort Sheridan at Sheridan Road and Gilgare Lane, in Highwood, and follow the signs to the preserve.

Regional Illinois Airports Prioritize Wildlife Safety

Staff from DuPage Airport (DPA) in West Chicago, Joliet Regional Airport, DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport, the Greater Kankakee Airport, Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal, Lake in the Hills Airport and Chicago Executive Airport, in Wheeling, took part in a wildlife hazards seminar at DPA conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The seminar is required to comply with annual training requirements set forth under the FAA-approved Wildlife Hazard Management Plan. “Safety is our number one priority here at the airport, but wildlife and natural surroundings are an important component of our ecosystem,” says David Bird, executive director of the DuPage Airport Authority (DAA). “This seminar provided all attendees with both a good understanding of strategies for keeping animals away from danger, as well as how wildlife aviation incidents can be reduced.” With more than 3,000 acres of land at the DuPage Airport, wildlife is omnipresent. Protection and preservation of natural wildlife by the DAA is a year-round goal, and critical steps are regularly taken to help prevent wildlife aviation incidents by modifying food, water and sheltering resources through several diverse initiatives. Recently, the DAA invested more than $850,000 in installing more than two miles of wildlife perimeter fencing with a buried chain-link skirt to safely prevent coyotes, foxes and rodents from digging under the fence and into the active airfield. The DAA plans to continue installation of the wildlife skirt throughout the remaining six miles of airfield fencing. According to the FAA, birds account for 97 percent of wildlife aviation incidents, and mammals the other 3 percent. Whether it’s a plane encountering a flock of birds or coyotes wandering near a runway, wildlife hazards can pose dangerous threats to pilots/passengers, airplanes and equipment. Airports must take a proactive stance in protecting species and mitigating the potential for wildlife strikes at or near the airport. This might mean safely altering habitats in a manner that deters birds and other mammals from wanting to make their home near the airport, or implementing innovative mechanisms that keep wildlife away. by Karen Shaw Becker

n estimated 10 percent of Americans are allergic to household pets, with sensitivities to cats twice as common as to dogs, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Most people with cat allergies react to Fel d 1, a protein found on cat skin, although other cat allergens are found on the fur, in saliva and even in their urine, reports a study in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The tiny Fel d 1 protein attached to a piece of airborne cat hair or skin can linger in the air for hours—much longer than a similarly released dog allergen. It’s also sticky, readily attaching to human skin and clothing, and can even easily transfer to catfree public locations such as a classroom. Male cats tend to produce more of this allergenic protein than females, especially if they’re not neutered. However, all cats produce the Fel d 1 protein, and it’s unrelated to the amount of feline dander or shedding. Thus, no truly hypoallergenic cat breed exists, yet some breeds may be better for allergic pet lovers, say Austrian researchers in a study published in the journal Clinical and Translational Allergy. Many people are able to build up tolerance to their kitty over time. Before starting a relationship, first ensure the allergy is not severe. If allergy symptoms are more of a nuisance than a serious health threat, some options can help minimize the problem at home: 4 Consider making the bedroom of any affected family member a cat-free zone.

46

4 Purchase a high-quality air purifier to clean the air of allergens and other pollutants. 4 To prevent a buildup of allergens indoors, replace carpeting with hard flooring and drapes and curtains with non-fabric window coverings and if possible, avoid upholstered furniture. 4 Clean the house often and thoroughly, including any surfaces that trap pet hair and dander like couch covers, pillows, bedding and pet beds. 4 Wash bed linens at least weekly in hot water. 4 Wash hands after handling the cat. After snuggling together, consider taking a shower and shampoo before retiring in order to avoid bringing kitty allergens to bed. 4 Feed kitty an anti-inflammatory (grainfree), balanced and species-appropriate diet. Reducing or eliminating the allergenic and genetically modified (GMO) foods a cat eats reduces the allergenic quality of their saliva. 4 Ensure optimal levels of essential fatty acids in their diet to reduce shedding and dander. 4 Bathe the cat regularly, taking care to use only a safe, non-drying, herbal animal shampoo. 10 BREEDS FOR ALLERGIC CAT LOVERS by Karen Shaw Becker

1

Balinese

Sometimes called the “longhaired Siamese” for its luxurious coat, Balinese cats nevertheless produce less of the Fel d 1 protein than other breeds.

2 Shutterstock.com

Russian Blue

6

Cornish Rex

Similar to the Devon Rex, but with a curly fur coat, the Cornish Rex has only a soft undercoat of down hair, compared with a typical three layers, including an undercoat, middle “awn” hair and outer guard hair, so they shed less.

7

Siberian

Despite a short, double coat that is silky and plush to the touch, this cat also produces less Fel d 1 protein. They’re known for their loyalty and playful personality.

Some people love the look of this longhaired, shaggy-coated cat. They also produce less Fel d 1 protein than other breeds, even those with far less fur.

3

Bengal

8

LaPerm

Bengals’ uniquely fine fur requires less grooming than many others. Because they spend less time licking their fur, it contains less saliva and their dander is less likely to spread.

This cat’s unique curly coat may help reduce the spread of dander.

9

Sphynx

A hairless cat, the Sphynx has no fur to trap allergens from their saliva. However, the Fel d 1 protein will still be present.

4

Devon Rex

The soft, short and curly coat of this playful breed—known for remaining “kittens at heart”—may normally include bare, furless patches. They shed less than many others.

10

Javanese

This breed has only a top coat, just one of the three typical layers of coats common to cats, which means less shedding and dander to spread around the home.

5

Oriental Shorthair

The Oriental Shorthair encompasses more than 300 different colors and patterns, all with short, fine coats for minimal shedding. Regular grooming helps control dander.

Preventing Digestion Problems Before They Start

R

eneé S. Barasch, a certified digestive health specialist, detoxification/purification specialist and founder of Nutritional Health Solutions, in Highland Park, has been a Chicago area leader in nutrition and digestion education for more than 12 years. She splits her time between seeing clients in private sessions, speaking to the community, writing about digestion issues, being an ambassador for holistic digestive health and giving people the ability to connect the dots between nutrition and digestion. Although every digestive system is different, many people experience allergy flare-ups that may be related to how their bodies are breaking down ingredients in their food. Being aware of our specific digestive needs and taking steps to protect the gut can eliminate allergies, improve absorption and take unneeded stress off our organs.

Why is thorough digestion so important for overall health?

Digestion is one of the main ways the body detoxifies, or cleanses. If the food you’re consuming isn’t broken down properly and thoroughly, it causes stress on the system as it moves through, which can lead to symptoms like gas, bloating, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea and even insomnia, depression, psoriasis, eczema and chronic pain. Proper digestion also allows for thorough absorption, so your body is able to use the nutrients you’re putting inside it. Undigested food leads to what we call “leaky gut”, where it passes through the gut membrane and into the bloodstream. This can eventually lead to more serious conditions such as Crohn’s and other autoimmune diseases. In general, when our food isn’t being digested properly, our bodies aren’t working as efficiently as they can. Food becomes a toxin, instead of something that nourishes us.

What role do enzymes play in digestion?

Enzymes are the catalyst for food to be digested. They help to deliver the nutrients to the cells and increase absorption. When food is steamed, broiled, roasted, boiled, fried, stewed, canned, pasteurized or microwaved, the naturally occurring enzymes in it are destroyed. I recommend that everyone take a specific digestive enzyme supplement. That enzyme depends largely on your diet, and how your body breaks down fats, carbs and protein. Testing is recommended to determine which enzyme is right for you.

An enzyme with higher amylase content helps break down carbohydrates, and one with more lipase works better to break down fats. In my office, we run lab tests to determine the right mix of enzymes for each person. I take into consideration factors like family history, diet and overall health. The tests also help detect any nutritional deficiencies. Based on the results, I might recommend diet modifications and food supplements in addition to enzymes.

How do environmental irritants affect digestion?

We encounter factors in the environment every day that can cause irritation and inflammation, whether that’s someone’s excess perfume, secondhand smoke or particles from a construction site. In the springtime, the air is full of dust, mold and other seasonal aggravators. When we breathe these in, they get into our bloodstream in less than 20 seconds. Our bodies then have to break down those extra toxins, which is a lot of work for the liver, kidneys and gallbladder. If they aren’t broken down properly, it results in what people think of as seasonal allergies; runny nose, itchy eyes, red or blotchy skin. People often miss the connection between allergies and digestion. Instead of going to an allergist, they might just need to have their digestive system checked for digestive imbalances.

What practices can people do every day to improve digestion?

Digestive health is dependent on a number of factors, but it is key to both detoxification and real nutrition. I tell my clients that ideally, they are looking to digest, absorb, transport, utilize and eliminate the cellular waste that’s put into their bodies. Avoiding environmental irritants and pollutants eliminates the need to break them down in the first place. Chewing your food thoroughly starts the breakdown process before it gets into the digestive system. Eating a healthy mix of protein, fats, whole grains fruit and veggies at each meal may be easier to break down than a giant plate of just pasta or a huge steak. Food that is processed or contains GMOs is much harder for the body to process, so I encourage clients to look for whole foods in their natural form as much as possible. Digestive Health Solutions is located at 480 Elm Pl., in Highland Park. For appointments, call 847-207-2034. SHIATSU THERAPIST

My friend recommended I try shiatsu to help heal my lingering injuries from several car accidents and sports injuries—including a torn disk and two bulging disks in my lower back, ongoing stiffness and pain in my neck and shoulders, and difficulty walking and exercising due to misfiring of the nerves in my left leg. After three one-hour Zen Shiatsu treatments, I regained flexibility, strength, and felt no pain continuously for four months. Deep healing has occurred in my body, mind, spirit and soul! My outlook is more positive, re-vitalized, and filled with bright hope for the future. Is it any wonder I am taking the Beginning Zen Shiatsu course to learn more about this wonderful healing art?
