We Believe Kids Foundation Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try!

Determination and passion are engines of achievements. Sometimes, it takes courage to take a step towards change. Surrounded by the sea, Raichel Sintjacoba, a 31-year-old and a man devoted to his family, once wondered why teens choose wrong paths to follow. It was as if the waves carried his thoughts towards the idea of changing lives of youngsters. Five years ago, he made the decision to start his journey. He approached 12 kids through foundations, and with the money he saved when working for his father, he provided the kids with school supplies, and was present in their lives and a part of their upbringing. By: Jade Mambre | Photography: Uriel Symor

GOWEEKLY 03 2018 COVER STORY

After graduating high school and completing his intermediate vocational education in bookkeeping, Raichel worked in prison and afterwards Brasami, a rehabilitation center, to experience the reality of what the teens undergo. The small steps he took, with God by his side, slowly started to lead him towards bigger accomplishments, like being the founder of We Believe Kids Foundation.

The growth Currently, Raichel is an Accountable Officer of the driving license department and founder of We Believe Kids Foundation. Regardless of people who doubted his plans, he carried on, because he believed he could. He started organizing different activities, one of which was handing out 350 breakfasts to kids in need. Before he knew it, people were starting to notice Raichel’s helping hand, his acts of kindness, and his aims. People approached him to inform him about how businesses are willing to help foundations, which at that time We Believe Kids Foundation was not. To have an after school daycare was a mutual wish of both Raichel and the director of a school in Brievengat, where he grew up. He wanted a building to have all the kids together, but to start a daycare We Believe Kids had to be a foundation. That is how in February 2017 the after school daycare was established. In a short period of time 12 kids became 150, of which 130 are a part of the daycare and come from its surrounded areas, and 20 from other districts. The minority of the kids’ parents pay, as they have the means and recognize the quality of treatment that is given.

Activities and goals The team consists of Raichel, his wife and 18 people who teach and guide the young ones to become leaders to those who follow. Their goal is to “prevent teens from being pulled into wrongdoings”. They raise these kids by helping them with their homework, giving them bible study, art, brass band, singing, dance and music lessons. They work on the mental, emotional and physical development of the kids between the ages of 4 and 12 and those who wish to stay thereafter. More importantly, love is shown towards these children. “Some kids get

everything, but not the love they need”. They are taught about life and how to take responsibility. “Also, what is missing here in Curaçao is a father figure, and that is what I am for most of the kids of the foundation”.

Accomplishments Throughout this amazing journey Raichel created a football team of 15 boys called We Believe Boys. They won third place in Goals for Kids, an annual tournament here in Curaçao. Furthermore, the inspiring story of Raichel reached the Netherlands, and he was invited to compete in the competition organized by Oranje

“We have to give them love and teach them the value of life”

Fonds, the largest national fund on social fields, called Appeltjes van Oranje. Raichel’s story had an impact on so many people in the room during the competition. We Believe Kids Foundation won as the best foundation in the Caribbean managed by the younger generation in November 2017. Not long after, Oranje Fonds came to visit Raichel’s foundation to experience his story in person. He was also informed that his foundation is already a finalist. So, upcoming June 2018, Raichel will visit the Netherlands to receive an award

and visit King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, to find out who won from both the Dutch and Caribbean foundations. Raichel Sintjacoba wants to expand his foundation into one more after school daycare to the west side of the bridge. The expansion is to be able to reach and help kids around that area, and to inspire other neighborhoods to do the same. With God by his side, Raichel will continue his journey believing in Curaçao’s younger generation and making a difference in their lives.
