GOWEEKLY 13 2017 ENTERTAINMENT

Recently, former Miss Universe, Paulina Vega visited Curaรงao to do a photo shoot for the December edition of Maxim Colombia magazine for which she was on the cover.

Tupac Shakur into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Snoop Dogg will induct his late friend Tupac Shakur into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during the ceremony on April 7 in Brooklyn. Shakur is the sixth rap act to enter the storied institution. He follows Run-D.M.C., Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and N.W.A into the history books. Snoop and potentially Dr. Dre will participate in a musical tribute to Shakur. Snoop Dogg is a fitting choice for the induction of Shakur because the two rappers collaborated on the All Eyez on Me single '2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted', and were often seen together during the height of Death Row Records. The 2017 Rock Hall ceremony will also honor Pearl Jam, Yes, Joan Baez, Journey and Electric Light Orchestra.

4

The model held an extended visit on the island where she was able to visit various exotic spots. Among the sites selected for the photo shoot were the Santa Barbara Beach Hotel & Golf Resort; the Pietermaai area and the beaches of Porto Marie, Cas Abou and Karakter. Paulina was very happy during her stay and also dedicated messages to the island, showing her affection and appreciation for the community. The Curaรงao Tourist Board (CTB) is very proud that yet another magazine has chosen the island for a photo shoot.

Mariah Carey , who calls her birthdays 'anniversaries', celebrated her 47th birthday by renting out a private villa for her family, friends and boyfriend. Her boyfriend and back-up dancer Bryan, who has been dating Mariah since late last year, shared a picture of himself and Mariah on Instagram with the caption: "Starting the anniversary festivities in a relaxing chic environment. #HappyAnniversary".

GOWEEKLY 13 2017 COVER STORY

World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognized day on the 2nd of April every year, encouraging people to raise awareness about children with autism throughout the world. Go Weekly sat down with Alex, a brilliant young man who has been diagnosed with autism at the age of 15. With his foundation, Beautiful Minds, Alex wants to educate the people of Curaçao about autism and help other autistic individuals by educating them, and making their life easier. Meet Alex ‘Anders’. Editor: Sendeliz Gibbes | Photography: Uriel Symor

Alex, how did you find out that you were 'different'?

Beautiful Minds Curacao

8

When I was 15 years old, my mother had to be hospitalized, and I stayed with family during that period. They recognized that I was displaying some symptoms of autism, and that I was different. They told my mother, that she should get me tested for autism, which she did not appreciate. Eventually she took me to a pediatric psychiatrist, who observed, and tested me for 3 months, and concluded that I was autistic. It was difficult for my mom to accept the diagnosis in the beginning, but together we started to collect information on how to educate an autistic individual.

"It was dificult for my mom to accept the diagnosis in the beginning"

Can you tell us what autism is? I can explain it from my own perspective. There's an entire autism spectrum, and everyone does not have the same symptoms. Some people, for example, experience stimuli in a different manner. They see something with their eyes, yet experience a certain taste. What your eyes see,

COVER STORY GOWEEKLY 13 2017

Alex 'Anders' your tongue will taste. And if you don't enjoy the sensation, you can reject it. Every autistic person has different symptoms. One thing that we all have in common is communication difficulties and problem with social interactions. Our social skills are not as well developed as they could be, and we do not understand figurative linguistics. For example, the popular saying 'nan a dal mi palu', we don't interpret it as standing someone up, but as someone being hit with a wooden stick or something. I interpret everything literally which leads to a lot of misunderstandings. That is one of the many examples of what I have to deal with as an autistic person.

When you discovered that you were autistic, how did you manage it, and how has your life changed since you found out? When I got diagnosed, it did not affect me at all. It was just a label to me. To me, I was always normal, and other people were different. After I got diagnosed, my life actually improved because my mom helped me a lot, and together we figured out how to live with it. At school, I would always tell the teachers that I am autistic, so that they could understand that it takes me more time to think, and formulate sentences. If I did not say anything, it might have an adverse effect on my grades. At the

moment, I'm completing my last year of the Havo on my own. I think that home schooling is the best option for me, because I'm disciplined enough to do it. After this, I'd like to complete my VWO education, and after that I'd like to study law at UoC.

You founded your own foundation, Beautiful Minds Curaçao. What do you want to achieve with Beautiful Minds? When I was diagnosed with autism, it was very hard for me to get information about it. There was no organization to help me and my mom. For people like me, who have an Asperger’s syndrome, also known as

9

GOWEEKLY 13 2017 COVER STORY

"Accept who you are, accept that you're different, and know that it's OK to be different"

high functioning autism, who do not need to go to a special institution and being taken care of 24 hours a day, there was no help on the island available. People simply do not know about us and we just have to figure out how to help ourselves. If you have high functioning autism, you can lead a pretty 'normal' life. Whenever you're different here, people try to hide it. It's a taboo, and I want to break that taboo. That's another reason why I founded my foundation. If you don't tell people that you're autistic, they will never understand you. And to be able to talk to them about autism, you actually need to know what it is.

10

With my foundation, I want to educate the people of Curaรงao about autism, and encourage people who think that they might be autistic, to go get tested. For the ones that already know that they are autistic, I want to help them, by educating them, and making their life easier. You should not be ashamed of your autism, tell people that you're autistic, so that they can keep that in mind when they're around you. It's not the end of the world. Because I have said that I'm autistic, others who are also autistic have reached out to me and asked how I dealt with it. To them I say, accept who you are, accept that you're different, and know that it's OK to be different.
