GOWEEKLY 15 2018 COVER STORY

Being outside and having a good time is what Camiel enjoys doing, which is why active is the one word Camiel Canters would use to describe himself. He was born and raised in Curaçao, and he got married on the island three years ago. Currently he is living in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. His decision to leave Curaçao was made to attend school. Camiel completed both his BBA and MBA degrees at Stetson University in central Florida. “For my undergraduate degree I studied finance, because it is a very competitive field”. Let’s talk business with

Camiel Canters Camiel Canters was a trustee for the Roland George Investment Program at Stetson. The program concerned students who were managing a real portfolio made of $3.5 million in stocks and bonds. Exploring the field of finance and selling t-shirts in his dorm room led to Camiel’s very own clothing company. Along with three other friends, he started to sell t-shirts at Stetson University. In one week they sold 300 t-shirts. “This is when I realized we had something special”. From that moment on, he has been fully focused on his clothing brand.

A clothing company. Here’s why: Going to the beach in Florida was how he saw the opportunity to start a company that sells beach and active clothing. According to Camiel, Florida is the perfect place for that. As a 22-year-old, he started working towards building his company in 2010, but in 2013 Camiel himself and his three friends started to take it seriously. Now, his brand can be found in more than 100 stores!

The secret of building a brand “You have to be creative and think on your feet. I realized quickly there

GOWEEKLY 15 2018 COVER STORY

is no one size fits all guide on how to build a brand so you have to learn from trial and error”. According to Camiel, it takes perseverance to own a clothing company. “You can’t give up”.

How do you evaluate success?

“You have to be creative and think on your feet"

Success is neither the amount of followers he has nor the amount on his bank account. “At the end of the day my friends and family are all that matter. So, if I have them when we become a global brand then I would consider that a success”.

What Camiel loves about his job As the president and owner of the company, Camiel finds that his customers have become like family. “Being able to see them use our hashtag and become a part of the community really brings it all together for me”. He gets to bring vision to life, while creating and representing a brand that he is actively a part of.

Being a businessman and having a family Camiel’s clothing company has always been his “baby”, but last year his daughter, Mila, was born. Since then “her needs come first, which means I have to turn off from time to time”. This helps giving Camiel perspective and the chance to refocus. “It’s a challenge, because as an entrepreneur you want to perfect your craft, but your life should be organized in a way that one aspect isn’t overshadowing other parts”. It is all about balance.

Do not be afraid to choose a different route “The key takeaway is that I come from Curaçao, it’s located where we get to have the option to immerse ourselves in different cultures with a short plane ride. I never set out with the intention to create a clothing company, but it happened and I ran with it. It’s easy to create a narrative in our minds of what our lives should be when we stay or leave

the island. But if you have those chances to go a different route in life, don’t be afraid to. I should be sitting in a suit right now staring at numbers all day instead I’m designing a line for people who love the outdoors just as much as I”.

The future ”Giving up has honestly never crossed my mind. It’s not an option, because I believe in the brand and our mission to connect people who love the outdoors and Florida just as much as I. I hope that we never stop growing”. Camiel looks forward to continue expanding his business around the world. “Eventually I do hope to move back home, to dushi Kòrsou, in the next 5-10 years so that our daughter, Mila, can grow up in a similar setting as I did. Plus, I think it’s important to go back and invest in the island that has given me so much”.

DIY matcha green tea

face mask

Treat yourself to this antioxidant-packed (and tasty) face mask. Mix up a few ingredients you find in your kitchen to create the healthiest, cleanest skincare products. It’s less expensive, and it’s even better for your skin. Let’s start with introducing the only two simple ingredients we are going to be using: - 1 tbsp of Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder - 1 tbsp of Organic Raw Honey

That’s it! Honey has many healing qualities. Raw, unpasteurized honey is filled with friendly bacteria, and is very nutrient-rich. Raw honey heals acne, skin pigmentation, inflammation, and tightens pores. There is so much more to say about honey, but

How to Apply We recommend using this mask after taking a hot shower to make sure your pores are open to absorb the mask. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes, and rinse it off with warm water while you massage your face in circular motions.

12

we’ll keep it short. Matcha powder also has some healing benefits for the Skin: 1. Full of antioxidant 2. Natural UV protection 3. Anti-aging/ wrinkle prevention 4. High in Chlorophyll 5. Evens out the skin tone The matcha and sugars from the honey serve as a natural exfoliant. Now, don’t you feel extra glowy after this mask?
