Art Rules Curaçao
Kick off
5 Years Strong! International Summer Arts program Art Rules Curaçao KICKS OFF Monday! ARC5 is back STRONGER than ever bringing once again artist educators from all over the world. Let the countdown begin! International Summer Arts program Art Rules Curaçao starts this Monday July 23rd at Pietermaai’s vibrant cultural arts center Kurá di Arte. One major transformation Art Rules has undergone is metamorphosing the DJ workshop into DJ & Music Production. Taught by Amsterdam based music producer DJ Hayzee and cultural producer/DJ Lynnée Denise from LA, this was the first workshop to fill up! Many DJ students have been experimenting with beat making on their own so ARC is more than happy to fill this much needed void.
The teachers Cape Verdean artist Gery Mendes and Be Steadwell from Washington DC are bringing a lot of soul to this year’s Music and Performance workshop. Both artists are well rounded musicians with live performing experience on large stages. Art Rules is bringing back Music Theater and Mime expert Dionne Verwey to the Theater Workshop as she really raised the bar last year. James Reynolds is joined by Selwyn de Wind once again to helm Creative Media by popular demand. Many of last year’s students are joining the workshop once again.

As a child, we were all very curious about something. Sulin Passial’s journey towards being a film producer started ever since she was little. Her grandparents used to watch soap operas, which Sulin often watched after school while making her homework. TV sparked her interest and aroused her curiosity to know and “see how people do it all on TV.” Stepping foot in the creative world is always a challenge, but even so, Sulin pursued her dream career after studying economy and management at MIL. She went to the Netherlands and studied media management, an academic program that combines her passion, art, and economy at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. That was the moment she consciously chose her future career, which is all about art, culture and audiovisual creations. Now, Sulin has been a film producer for 10 years, starting with her production E leyenda di Buchi Fil (2008), which was filmed in Curaçao. GOWEEKLY 29 2018 COVER STORY
The return to Curaçao In 2007, Sulin did her six-month internship in Mexico, which was all about working side by side with the entire team for the production of Destilando Amor, a soap opera for Televisa. This experience exposed Sulin to work ethics, and it shaped her a lot as a film producer. Not long after, Sulin returned to Curaçao for an opportunity to produce a youth news program around the beginning of 2009. Returning to Curaçao with a job opportunity on the field of movie production awaiting her “is one in a million,” so she took the job. “That is when a few colleagues of mine and I started Caribbean Kids News.” This production had correspondents in Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire and Saint Martin, which made Sulin see and realize how different each island’s culture is. After this experience, Sulin started her very own production business.
Film producers work with many people, they take care of locations, supplies, funds and so much more. “Sometimes I have the role of a psychologist, the role of a mother or the role of a teacher.” As a film producer you have to be able to switch from one role to another, you have to have a sense of structure and strategies for logistics, and you have to be perseverant and patient.
Job satisfaction Making commercials is all about creating a production based on a client’s wishes, disregarding your ideas as a film producer. “When I step into a film project, which is a lot of the time a passion project, I step in the script, I read it and if it appeals to me, I will go for it.” The moment Sulin can produce a film or any other project, is when she is able to make it her own. “I have to feel
"The people of Curaçao consume the culture of other countries as entertainment, but we are not busy capturing our culture (neither for locals nor foreigners) to be consumed as entertainment” Being a film producer
“A film producer is the person who organizes; the person who makes sure the fantasy of the director or the writer” is turned into reality. However, Sulin’s career is not only about being a film producer. She also learned to be a journalist and build her casting agency along the way. She always helps creative people think and create, to make it happen afterwards.
the theme, the concept, to be able to put my heart in it and make it happen.” The moment she is satisfied with her work is when she sees it on screen. To her, the journey of her productions that originated from small ideas to the point where they are shown on screen for a group of audience is simply amazing! When she sees the reaction of the audience, Sulin knows her job is done.

Curaçao International Film Festival 2018 Sulin Passial officially participated in Curaçao International Film Festival for the first time with the production of Sin Ayó (2017), which was nominated for the Caribbean Shorts Award 2018. It was a great experience for her to see Sin Ayó (2017) on screen and the reaction of the audience. According to Sulin, the existence of Curaçao International Film Festival is of great importance due to the accessible opportunity that people have to expose their work without having to leave their country. “Also the fact that people come from abroad to Curaçao for

the film festival” makes it possible as a creative person to connect and expand your social network in the world of film production. “A film festival is a must have for the development of the film community in Curaçao. I can’t think of a Curaçao without a film festival.” We have to create more ways to show local productions, “but a film festival is where it all starts.” In Sulin’s career, she has done almost all types of video productions that you can imagine, like commercials, web series, documentaries, films

and more. She enjoys working on big projects, as their complexity completely fascinates her. Being a film producer is a vehicle to communicate, to create and to capture cultures. The people
of Curaçao “consume the culture of other countries as entertainment, but we are not busy capturing our culture (neither for locals nor foreigners) to be consumed as entertainment.” Capturing our culture through an audiovisual project in general and for the next generations is timeless. “It is the biggest task that I see as a film producer and the creative world of Curaçao.” Sulin truly believes that we can make it happen! If you have the knowledge, the passion and the talent, go for it. “We did it, so the next generation can do it too.”
Did you know? Sin Ayó (2017) will be shown at the film festival in Trinidad & Tobago and the Caribbean Tales International Film Festival in Toronto in September 2018. www.pantallachicaproductions.com

Diego Maradona reacts before the Group D football match between Nigeria and Argentina
Did we just meet the world’s kindest president? During the World Cup finals, all eyes were on Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic. According to the analytics company ‘Mediatoolkit’, she emerged as her country’s star of the tournament with 25% more focus on her in the news than any other player on the pitch. She traveled economy class to Russia at her own expense and often watched the game from the non-VIP stands.

During the final ceremony, she literally hugged and kissed every single player of both teams, walked hand-in-hand with French President Macron and stood with grace in the rain to congratulate all the players.
