March 21 to April 19 When the thought of going to work makes it hard to get out of bed, just know that it's time to get another job. Unfortunately that's not something you can do right now, so instead, spoil yourself with the gifts you deserve!

Popular Virgo

Jason Derulo Born: September 21, 1989

FUN FACTS - He turned down a role in a popular Broadway musical just before his career took off - He earned his first opportunity in the music industry by writing and producing songs for Lil Wayne's record label - He studied opera and ballet at the Dillard Center for the Arts

April 20 to May 20 Romance is in the air and you must be breathing it in, a lot of it to be exact. Your blood is boiling, your passion is surging, and a romantic dinner for two is in the cards. You'll be inclined to shop for clothes, but curb your appetite for material goods. What you really want doesn't come in a box, so why waste your money?

"Perhaps you'll decide to get married" CANCER -

GEMINI

May 21 to June 20 You're not in the mood to be friendly or participate in idle gossip. It seems you've been having the same conversations with the same people over and over again. You're feeling so bored you could scream. To avoid doing just that, spend some time alone. You need it.

CANCER VIRGO

August 23 to September 22 The coming weeks can be an opportunity to relax and treat yourself to some healthful pampering sessions that can help you feel restored. However, with a complex blend of energies also showing up this week, you might need to be firm with someone who drains your vitality.

LOVE You like to plan active dates over the weekend, so if your date is the sedentary type, you might not be a perfect match. The more your adrenaline is pumping, the easier it is to go in for that first kiss.

2

September 23 to October 22 You might be more connected to your thoughts, feelings, and intuition over the weeks ahead. Time out for reflection can be good for you now, as it might enable you to gain clarity regarding an issue that has confused you for some time. October 23 to November 21 You might enjoy all kinds of social events, club meetings, or community activities, and this can be the perfect time to connect with others and make new friends. At the same time, someone may not be as perfect as they seem to be. You could become great friends, but it would help to be realistic about their positive traits and flaws.

SAGITTARIUS

November 22-December 21 You could impress all the right people with a proactive stance, charm, and willingness to go the extra mile for others. But make room for social events, as your social life could have extra sparkle over the coming weeks. The chance to get to know someone better could lead to a supportive new friendship.

CAPRICORN

December 22 to January 19 Being willing to move outside your comfort zone can allow you to sample some wonderful opportunities, but it’s easier said than done. So make sure to gather that courage and take the first step towards new adventures!

June 21 to July 22 Just when you thought things were settled, life takes another turn. You may receive some information that has a dramatic impact on your life. Perhaps you'll receive an opportunity to move to another country. Perhaps you'll decide to get married. One thing is clear your future looks promising!

AQUARIUS

LEO

PISCES

July 23 to August 22 You should feel optimistic and full of confidence in your ability to accomplish anything you set your mind to. If you're working toward a specific goal (and you should be), something is likely to happen soon that propels you that much closer to realizing your goal. What's the next step?

January 20 to February 18 The potential for inner transformation is strong now. You may feel called to explore issues that have been holding you back. This is all good, as by gently unpicking and working with intense feelings, things can begin to ease and you’ll be able to release this matter. February 19 to March 20 With a powerful emphasis on your relationships zone, you may find yourself thrown together with others in a way that allows for new insights and possibilities. Collaborating with key people or teaming up to complete a project can work very well, and it’s certainly better than trying to accomplish something alone.

Netflix, the world’s leading internet television network, announced the biographical series 'The Day I Met El Chapo: The Kate del Castillo Story'. The show will debut exclusively on Netflix October 20, 2017. The three-part series is the biographical account of Mexican actress, Kate del Castillo, telling her side of the story using never-before-seen footage and exclusive details of what led to the infamous meeting between one of the world’s most notorious drug lords, Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzman, a Hollywood star and one of Mexico’s most famous television actresses.

Curaçao came together during a Mediathon and Benefit Concert on September 17th to help raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Irma in Sint Maarten, Saba & St. Eustatius. The event which kicked off at Sambil, continued by a benefit concert at Brionplein, gathered around the 400 thousand Guilders. These donations were immediately handed over to Krus Kòrá Kòrsou.

Don Omar concert tickets for 99 cents! Reggaeton artist Don Omar will be going back to Puerto Rico in December for his retirement tour and he’s giving fans the hookup by selling tickets to his shows for 99¢. The announcement was initially a Christmas gift for fans on the island, which is currently in a $120 billion dollar financial debt crisis. That sense of charity has evolved in the wake of Hurricane Irma. In addition to the cheap tickets, Don Omar has also decided to donate proceeds from the three-day concert series to relief efforts on the island.

NAME ELYSE ISEBIA AGE 22 YEARS OLD OCCUPATION FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER How many countries have you lived in? I’ve lived in three countries: Curaçao, The Netherlands and Australia

What type of photography do you do? If I had to put it in a category, I would say 'Travel & Lifestyle Photography', especially after spending the last two years living and working in Australia, which gave me the opportunity to travel to nearby countries.

"Listen, trust yourself, and follow your intuition"

Wakeboarding Snorkeling Bumpertubing Waterskiing Motorboating All Inclusive

What brands have you worked for?

As a freelance photographer I’ve collaborated with several brands. The last few months I’ve done a lot for lululemon as a storyteller, which meant community and sports related content creation.

Favourite spot in Curaçao? I don’t have any favourite spots, because for me it all depends on ‘when, with whom, the activity and mood’. But I always make sure I go off-roading at Hato at least once every time I visit Curaçao.

If you could go back in time and give a 6 year old you some advice, what would it be? Listen, trust yourself, and follow your intuition. Some of my best decisions were made because I believed in myself and acted on a gut feeling.

Being a teenager isn’t easy. Remember what it felt like going through puberty? Trying to fit in at school? Feeling like your parents and the world were against you? At times, we might forget how difficult the transition was from elementary school to high school. By: Miguel Gonzalez Perret-Gentil

Zaïd Tjong-A-Tjoe

Si! Mi Por 8

COVER STORY GOWEEKLY 38 2017

We would go from 1 teacher and 30 kids in one class room, to an overabundance of different teachers each day. The consistency we had in elementary school was gone. New faces in every period was something to get used to. Each class was intense and the homework load increased incredibly. Asking for help might have been something out of the ordinary for most of us. Sometimes it might even feel like we live in a society where being different is considered as weak. Where asking for help is frowned upon. But it shouldn’t be. Some kids need that extra attention and guidance in high school and that’s perfectly fine. They need a place to feel safe and accepted and that is why after school mentoring is so critical to the upbringing of our future workforce.

It all comes from a good place One of the unique features of Zaïd’s approach to tutoring is that each child attending the program goes through an interview process. According to Zaïd, although they are teenagers, they can only be helped if they are willing to help themselves. Parents can be suggestive about the idea of searching for a tutoring program but at the end of the day it is important for every teenager to know that the ball is in their court. Every kid attending Zaïd’s mentoring program 'Si! Mi Por', is there on their own free will. Zaïd knows what it’s like to need a helping hand from time to time.

"Part of our society has always believed that intelligence or success is measured according to what level of education you get into. That is complete nonsense!"

He attended the same tutoring program which he now runs. To him it was a safe haven for self-expression. He initially attended Si! Mi Por because of his struggles in high school. He was struggling with subjects such as math and physics. Once he started attending after school tutoring, it became clear to him that his skills laid elsewhere and decided to change his academic focus towards economic subjects. Everything changed from that point on. "At school I had a difficult time asking questions. Once I attended Si! Mi Por, I realized that it is perfectly fine to question the things we don’t understand. They gave me the necessary tools needed to overcome this obstacle. I have a stuttering

problem but I was instantly accepted for who I was, I wasn’t ridiculed nor excluded by others. I was allowed to be myself. I was able to interact with teachers about more than just school, we became a family". A family is what he is trying to create for students at Si! Mi Por. He wants to build a trust system where they can feel comfortable. "Once you build their trust, that’s when you can begin guiding them towards success", according to Zaïd.

"We have to remember that the pressure parents sometimes put on children to reach a certain level of education when transitioning to high school (VSBO or HAVO) is ridiculous. I understand that each parent wants what’s best for their children, but for some reason part of our society has always believed that intelligence or success is measured according to what level of education you get into. That is complete nonsense! Some kids need to go through a longer trajectory of education. I know enough people that have taken the long road, doing VSBO, followed by HAVO and

continued their studies either here in Curaçao or abroad. They are some of the most successful professionals I know". Zaïd firmly believes that going the long way (VSBO then HAVO) is better for certain kids. Just like he believes that not every single kid needs mentoring, but it is important to recognize when they do and how beneficial it might be to them.

Kids will be Kids I (Miguel, the writer) visited Si! Mi Por recently to experience what these students see and do every day. I noticed how comfortable they are in their own skin. According to 15 year old Juliette, a mentoring program is supposed to be about more than just studying. "I am dyslexic, I am different in comparison to your average 15 year old, I’m an old soul and mature for my age. Here I can be myself. Teachers are like our friends, they give me and others a sense of safety. I can ask anything and everything I want". She further explained how she’s someone who has trouble focusing. Here she learned how to prioritize and plan ahead in order to finish projects on time. "What I like about the way they teach is that you are not obligated to constantly study, you can actually talk to others. I’m a social butterfly and I like to interact.

10

"Here I can be myself. Teachers are like our friends, they give me and others a sense of safety. I can ask anything and everything I want" I know I need to study as well, but I am given the liberty to socialize, have a laugh and then I can fully concentrate on what I need to do". Si! Mi Por’s teaching style is unique. The teachers have an alternative way of thinking. Their approach is non-traditional and they try to adapt themselves to the students as well, instead of having the students adapt to them. Juliette also explained how one of her teachers (Jurgen, who is considered a hero by the students according to Zaïd) tries to relate each math problem to

real life situations. "He breaks it down in such a way, that I instantly get it. At school it just takes me longer to understand that same problem". For Zaïd it’s been a learning experience as well. He knows he is an entrepreneur but his main concern is helping those who need help. He highly believes in treating teachers and students alike with the utmost respect. 'Niks moet, alles kan' as they say in Dutch but most importantly he wants to teach every young soul that they can achieve anything they dream about. Simply put 'Si! Mi Por!'.
