Kayne West who earlier announced he changed his name to YE has deleted his Twitter and Instagram accounts following a week of controversial messages. It’s not the first time he has deleted his social media accounts — he did the same thing in May 2017 and remained silent on the platforms until April this year. YE was expected to release his new album, Yandhi, after his SNL appearance on September 29, but his wife Kim Kardashian revealed in a recent tweet that the release has been pushed back to November 23. Of course, not a good timing after so many controversary.

HIGH FIVE

FOR QIANA Qiana Gomes is a brave 12 year old young lady who has JIA (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis), but fights every day to make her life as beautiful as can be. She is also aware that many children and parents are not familiar with JIA. There is where she comes in. Qiana wants people to be aware of this disease and also to be more accepting of it by breaking the stigmas and taboo around it. She also wants children with the same condition to come together and exchange their experiences. We spent some time with her so she could tell us more about herself and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Here is her inspiring story. By: H. Nicholls Qiana tell us what do you want to do when you are older? ‘I want to own a spa where people can have massages, have a manicure and also do their hair.’ What do you like to do in your free time. What are your hobbies? ‘I like to dance and do arts and crafts and take pictures too. I want a photo camera for my birthday.’

8

Tell us something about your condition JIA. “Well at times it can be difficult, on days where you have been very active or if you have been in a certain position for a very long time, the pain can last longer. You have to move a lot so your limbs can remain flexible.’ When did you hear that you had JIA? ‘When I was around 6 or 7 years old. I

felt pain when I walked and I also had a brace for my wrist because it hurt so much. All my friends in school kept asking me what was wrong, I thought it was just pain but later on I was diagnosed with JIA.’ When the doctor told you that you had JIA were you afraid? ‘In the beginning I was afraid because I thought that I had something very bad

GOWEEKLY 41 2018 COVER STORY

and that I would not live for long, but now that I am aware of the disease I can deal with it much better.’ You are a very brave and strong girl. How do you cope with JIA on a daily basis? ‘I try to live a normal life like everybody else, the only difference is that sometimes I have to take more medicine than others. I am accustomed to it so I don’t think about it too much when I wake up in the morning. I try to live my life as normal as possible.’ What do you want people in Curacao and the rest of the world to know about JIA? ‘I want the ones that are suffering from this disease to know that they

are not alone and that they have to keep fighting. I have met kids of different parts of the world with JIA. It is nice to know more kids like that because they understand you better. For instance when I say that I am not able to do something they won’t ask silly questions or ask why I can’t do it. I like going to seminars and congresses abroad because I am able to meet kids with the same conditions as I and we exchange stories, we laugh and dance. Unfortunately we don’t have this in Curacao so most kids and grownups don’t know what it’s about. ’ What is your advice for other kids with JIA? ‘I want them to know that it is not as bad as you think. You should always

tell your doctor what you feel. This is important in order to get the right treatment. You also need people to support you. I have my mom, my family and friends.’ What is your biggest dream? ‘To be famous. So I can tell everybody that you don’t have to let JIA limit your dreams. To fight for what you love. I want to spread awareness.’ What is HighFiveForQiana? ‘My mom made a Facebook page called HighFiveForQiana where family and friends could post a picture giving me a high five as a form of encouragement. She got the idea about 2 years ago when an organization did a campaign called High Five to raise awareness about arthritis. I want to use this to encourage other kids to make the most of their lives even if you have a disease like JIA. ’ Where can people contact you? ‘They can follow me on Instagram. HighFiveForQiana

GOWEEKLY 41 2018 COVERSTORY

Go Weekly

go_weekly

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) formerly known as Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis JIA is an autoimmune disorder, which means that the body mistakenly identifies some of its own cells and tissues as foreign. The immune system, which normally helps to fight off harmful, foreign substances such as bacteria or viruses, begins to attack healthy cells and tissues. The result is inflammation marked by redness, heat, pain, and swelling. Many times this disease goes unnoticed by parents and doctors alike due to the symptoms being related to common complaints and ailments. There is also the fact that the child is unable to describe what he or she is feeling or not complain at all. According to Doctor Meindert Manshande, pediatrician at St. Elisabeth Hospital, the symptoms must be ongoing for at least 6 months continuously for there to be a diagnosis. Symptoms may include: fever that comes and goes, less appetite, weight loss, anemia, rash on a child's arms and legs and joint pain. However when diagnosed the treatment nowadays is much “heavier” than in the past. This is to prevent much worse problems in the future. According to Dr. Manshande if treatment is successful the first time,

10

chances of remission are far greater. However the prognosis has to be stated in an early stage. Something of great importance is the communication between the doctor and the parents of the patient. Parents may not be trained professionals, but they are able to verify what is best for their child due to day to day handling and own research. By communicating with the doctors they are able to come to a better prognosis and treatment method. In Curacao there are between 10 and 20 kids under the age of 18 that have a form of JIA, this is stemming from a research done by the pediatricians. Still there may be more, but due to lack of knowledge, from parents and

doctors alike, this may go undetected. Therefore it is important that parents are aware of the symptoms and complaints in order to set a diagnosis as soon as possible to prevent worse problems in the future. People should be aware that this affects the child greatly. The taboo should be broken and stigmas should be left aside. This will benefit everybody, from the child not having to go through more complicated procedures when he/she is an adult, to the insurance companies not having to shelf out more money later on instead of being more helpful now. Let’s tackle this disease now. Education about Juvenile rheumatoid is key to a better future for each child affected. By H. Nicholls

Workout

In my last column, I said I will be visiting Los Angeles. As I am still here, I don't have the time for a workout in the gym. Also, sometimes it costs a lot of money for a few weeks of gym membership. In these situations, it is perfect to know that you don't need a (fancy) gym for a full body workout. Look around you and you will see that each element that you can hold with safety can be good equipment for a workout. For me, I will use 2 bar stools that are perfect in weight and good to hold on to, as we would like to have as simple as possible. Now, let’s set our timer for 20 minutes. If you have more time, you can, of course, double your workout. Important: Please scan your environment so that it is safe to do the workout without hurting yourself, someone else, or something that can break.

1 Biceps curls Place your arms straight down and- bring them both up slowly.

4 Shoulder lifts Keep your body straight and lift your ams forward individually. 2 Abs (knee kicks) Hold on to the stool and bring your legs slowly towards you and away from your chest.

Advice: Do this exercise 2 or 3 times a week and take a day rest in between. For stretching: roll your arms in circles forward and backward 15 times (4x).

Let’s Go... Set your timer for 20 minutes, and put on some nice music on that will motivate you more. - The exercises are numbered till 4 - Do each number for 1 minute - When you are ready with all the 4 numbers, you have 1 minute to rest and then start over again until your time is up. That simple ;-)

12

3 Chest push ups Double check if the bar stool doesn’t slip away from the ground, if so then place the bar stool against a wall. - Elbows close to your body and push up and down slowly.

Good luck, keep your personal goal in mind and invest in that Body & Mind of YOURS. Greetings, Jesse By_jesse
