WELCOME TO GPAC’S 2014 DEAKIN UNIVERSITY THEATRE SEASON Live performance…a world like no other...anything can happen... the unexpected often does happen…in a variety of colours and moods. To be part of an audience watching live theatre is a very special experience. It connects us, it brings us closer to new ideas and encourages us to look at the world in new ways. Truly great theatre can change your view of the world. And for 2014, we’ve brought together what promises to be a startling season of eight productions that will make you laugh, gasp and even shed tears – possibly all at the same time. GPAC’s 2014 Deakin University Theatre Season will take you on a journey to new and interesting places, while returning to some that may be familiar. It’s a year of great drama and entertainment. We’ve got everything including The Kitchen Sink...yes really! We’re mixing it up to present something for everyone, from classic comic theatre with The Importance of Being Earnest starring the legendary and colourful Nancye Hayes to sensational new work including Little Bird written for and starring the great Paul Capsis. Both these shows offer the only Victorian performances, so be sure to tell your friends and family! We’re also thrilled to include the sensational new show from a classic company, Circus Oz!, promising great family entertainment and plenty of laughs. Plus there’s a killer black comedy, a heart warming outback adventure and a new take on a classic Big Brother. As you read through the following pages I hope you will agree that there’s plenty of variety and you will not want to miss a single moment! Join with a friend, a partner, colleague or a social group and make it your regular date for a catch-up. Life is busy and sometimes it actually helps to have dates locked in. Apart from seeing these wonderful shows, there are now even more reasons to become a season ticket holder, including bigger savings, more discounts and other benefits. Make 2014 your year to reconnect with friends (or make some new ones) and colour your world with entertainment that is so vivid you may require sunglasses.

Red Stitch Actor’s Theatre
The Kitchen Sink By Tom Wells
5-8 March
Drama Theatre
A warm, funny and deeply engaging portrait of a not-so-typical family, Tom Wells’ new hit play is about moving out and moving on. For one family in the faded Yorkshire seaside resort of Withernsea, not all is going to plan. Pieces are falling off Martin’s milk float as quickly as he is losing customers. Son Billy is pinning his hopes of a place at Art College on a portrait of Dolly Parton, while his sister Sophie’s dreams of becoming a JiuJitsu teacher might just be disappearing down the plughole. Holding the family together is mum Kath, a dinner lady with the patience of a saint – except something’s up with her sink. The Kitchen Sink puts a hilarious spin on blue collar domestic drama with a superbly nuanced tale of human fragility. Comical and affecting, The Kitchen Sink, hits the road after proving to be a hit for Red Stitch with a sell-out Melbourne season.

The Government Inspector By Simon Stone after Nikolai Gogol
22-24 May
The Playhouse
Nikolai Gogol was a nutcase. Bonkers. And in between bouts of nuttiness he just happened to write what are unquestionably the two funniest plays of the nineteenth century, Diary of a Madman and The Government Inspector. Ever since then, actors and directors have been using his plays as a leaping off point for their own journeys into theatrical madness. Now, a new generation of comic geniuses sink their teeth into The Government Inspector. Under the direction of the everinventive Simon Stone, this ridiculous, laugh-out-loud comedy will take a mad-cap turn toward twenty-first century Australia. It may not entirely resemble the play Gogol wrote in 1836, but this new Government Inspector is an implausible masterpiece for our implausible times.

1984 By George Orwell
5 - 7 June
The Playhouse
Strap yourself in for this terrifically chilling theatrical event set against a towering wall of plasma screens. Oceania; a Nation perpetually at war, where cameras watch every move and Thought Police roam the streets. By day, Winston Smith is an editor at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to align the past with the radical political agenda of the ruling party and its leader, Big Brother. By night, Winston pursues a forbidden love affair with the mysterious Julia in an attempt to rebel against the oppressive regime and maintain some control over his otherwise totally controlled life. After being discovered and detained, Winston is beaten, manipulated and subjected to sickening torture in an attempt to make him reject dreams of liberation and understand that free thought and logic is the only true enemy. This new stage adaptation brings George Orwell’s final novel screaming into the present. Little Bird
By Nicki Bloom, with songs and music by Cameron Goodall and Quentin Grant
10 - 12 July
The Playhouse
Do you think a boy bird can sing a girl bird’s song? Little Bird looks at the journey of a young boy, Wren, from his parents’ isolated cottage all the way to the lights of the big city. Along the way a series of startling transformations occur, blurring the lines of identity, gender and reality as Wren searches for self, for love and for a place to belong. A fairytale for grown-ups, a song cycle, a thrilling performance, Little Bird is a gripping story of how people can transform many times over the course of a lifetime. The show was created especially for Australian stage legend Paul Capsis by multi-award winning playwright Nicki Bloom (Tender, Land and Sea) and features songs by Cameron Goodall (The Audreys) and Quentin Grant (When The Rain Stops Falling). Drawing upon fable, mythology and song to create a compelling dramatic and musical journey, Little Bird will leave you transported, uplifted and with tears in your eyes.

Highway of Lost Hearts
Written and performed by Mary Anne Butler
6-9 August
Drama Theatre
A woman. A dog. A campervan. And 4,500km of wide open road. Mot wakes up one morning to find that her heart is missing from her chest. She can breathe; she has a pulse - but she feels… nothing. So. She decides to go and look for it. With her dog enlisted as co-pilot, Mot heads down the Highway of Lost Hearts: into the deepest core of the Australian outback - navigating red dirt landscapes, fire and flood, vast salt lakes, age-old mountains and murky waters filled with lost souls. And the further Mot drives into the deepest heart of Australia, the more she realises that everyone around her also seem to be missing some vital part of themselves. An allegory for a country that has lost its heart, Highway of Lost Hearts leaves you pondering the question: when your heart goes missing, what lengths will you go to, in order to find it again?

The Importance of Being Earnest By Oscar Wilde
28-30 August The Playhouse
I never change, except in my affections. Oscar Wilde’s brilliant and much-loved comedy of love, manners and mistaken identity – The Importance of Being Earnest has been delighting audiences for over 100 years. Set within the stifling conventions of Victorian England, two young bachelors have taken to bending the rules and the truth to add a dash of excitement to their lives. Jack invents a brother Ernest as an excuse to leave his dull country life behind so that he may pursue Gwendolen, the delectable daughter of the formidable Lady Bracknell. Across town Algernon decides to take the name Ernest, when visiting Jack’s young ward Cecily. When each gentleman is forced to unwind his web of lies and reveal himself – being “earnest” takes on a whole new meaning! Grand dame of the Australian theatre Nancye Hayes brings the formidable and acidic Lady Bracknell to life alongside the elastic and hilarious Nathan O’Keefe as Algernon.

The brand spanking new 2014 Circus Oz show draws inspiration from the pre-digital, analog world and the subsequent exponential explosion of options, data and ideas. Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Book by John Weidman
23-25 October The Playhouse
Amidst the lurid debris of a traveling carnival, a proprietor invites nine would-be heroes to step up to the mark and hit a target in return for a glittering prize. As he hands out guns with a glib invitation, “c’mere and kill a president”, we are introduced to a collection of America’s most disturbing characters, from John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald. A killer black comedy, Assassins takes a provocative lens to the dreams, distortions and delusions of nine infamous Americans. Stephen Sondheim is the recipient of seven Tony Awards - his work as a composer lyricist over the past four decades has set the standard for contemporary music theatre. This production, directed by Tyran Parke and with cast of fifteen led by Mark Dickinson, Nick Simpson-Deeks and Nadine Garner, was a sell-out when it debuted in Melbourne last year.

An Evening with Margaret Drabble Tues Feb 25, 6.30 - 7.30pm Drama Theatre
Margaret Drabble is a consummate chronicler of London, which she knows ‘as thoroughly as any novelist has ever known any city’, according to Joyce Carol Oates. Her insightful, affecting novels about the inner lives of conflicted women as they navigate the change-filled terrain of the 1960s onward (including ambition and motherhood), have been much celebrated – and loved. Her eighteenth novel, The Pure Gold Baby, explores single motherhood and disability, through the life of anthropologist Jess, who has an affair with a professor that results in ‘pure gold baby’ Anna, a special needs child who will need Jess’s care for the rest of her life, altering its course forever in complex ways.

Arts For Life The GPAC endowment fund WHAT WILL ARTS FOR LIFE ACHIEVE? Arts for Life will ensure GPAC remains a centre where our children first experience the performing arts; a centre which nurtures local emerging artists; and a centre where both Australian and the world’s finest artists continue to perform on our stages. Additional income through Arts for Life will give the centre the opportunity to confidently plan and build the artistic programs. These include: •
Support for the development of emerging artists, education programs and new cultural activities across the Arts Precinct
•
Increased access for schools, community groups, organisations, and independent producers wishing to present performances at GPAC
•
A greater number of performances by leading Australian and international artists across the performing arts
HOW TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT Arts for Life aims to raise $10 million to be built up over 10 years. There are three principle ways to make a donation to the fund: 1. A Bequest If, once you have remembered your family, you also have the capacity to invest in your community then a bequest - a provision in your will - is the perfect legacy to acknowledge the pleasure you have received from your involvement with GPAC over the years. Such a bequest would normally take the form of a nominated dollar amount or as a percentage of your estate. This is a very personal decision and should only be made after discussion with those assisting you with the drafting of your will. 2. A once-off significant donation Once-off significant donations could be in cash, a gift of shares, proceeds from a life insurance policy or a realisable asset. These significant donations could also be made as a bequest. 3. Annual giving Every donation received assists GPAC in the delivery of its annual artistic program. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
