Welcome to GPAC’s 2013 Deakin University Theatre Season. The season is planned to take you on a journey to new places, challenge your thinking, entertain and inspire you. You will meet two of Australia’s most worldly and travelled companies – Geelong’s own Back to Back Theatre returning from their American tour for their season of Ganesh Versus The Third Reich and the astonishing Bangarra Dance Theatre with Kinship – Fire, Brolga and ID. Both these works explore questions of identity, cultural ownership and link traditional and contemporary worlds. Canada’s Ronnie Burkett returns to Geelong bringing his fascinating world of marionettes in his new work Penny Plain. New works from other international playwrights are also represented including Nick Dear’s celebrated adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein for the National Theatre London and the fast and funny Midsummer – a play with songs by Scottish writers David Greig & Gordon McIntyre. The best new Australian writing is also featured with Daniel Keene’s moving play Boxman, the delicious Food by Steve Rogers and The Haunting of Daniel Gartrell by Reg Cribb. And finally Melbourne’s Arena Theatre brings us Cautionary Tales for Children, an absurd lyrical satirical cabaret adapted from Hilaire Belloc’s poems for children from 8 to 88. This exceptional line-up of productions really does bring you the best from around the world – so please explore them all because you can be sure that the one you miss will be the best of all worlds. I look forward to seeing you at GPAC in 2013.

“Courageous, confronting, intelligent and magisterially considered theatre.” - The Australian, 5 Stars
Back to Back Theatre
Ganesh Versus The Third Reich The elephant-headed god Ganesh is traveling through Nazi
Germany to reclaim the Swastika, an ancient Hindu symbol. The play cleverly interweaves the story of a young man inspired to create a play about Ganesh, god of overcoming obstacles. He is an everyman who must find the strength to overcome the difficulties in his own life, and defend his play and his collaborators against an overbearing colleague. The show is made before our very eyes and takes on its own life. It invites us to examine who has the right to tell a story and who has the right to be heard. It explores our complicity in creating and dismantling the world, human possibility and hope. Ganesh Versus The Third Reich is poignant, beautiful, disarming, full of vulnerability and sly transparency. As part of a 2013 World Tour, Geelong’s Back to Back Theatre presents this critically acclaimed production, winner of the national Australian 2012 Helpmann Award for Best Play.

By Steve Rodgers On a stretch
of Australian highway, two sisters – Elma and Nancy – run a takeaway joint – their days heavy with Chiko Rolls and memories. While they quietly wage war with their past and wrangle with each other about how to map out their future, a young traveller arrives bringing with him a charm and sensuality that turns their world around. They start to believe in their dreams, turning their run-down eatery into a restaurant, showcasing Elma’s gift for comfort cooking. Audience members become restaurant guests as the sisters’ dreams become reality and they serve up Elma’s hearty minestrone soup, bread and wine.

Cautionary Tales for Children Based on the verse by Hilaire Belloc Adapted by Claudia O’Doherty, Mark Jones and Chris Kohn Meet our dysfunctional
musical troupe of four, who have travelled to our stage via a time machine. They’re on a mission to teach today’s rascally kids a thing or two about the importance of being well-behaved, and are armed with Hilaire Belloc’s poems about wayward children and the outlandish fates that befall them. This whimsical, musical and very funny cabaret is proof that learning lessons about good behaviour has never been quite so absurd and hilarious at the same time.

“Brilliant … astonishing … a humane, intelligent retelling of the original story.” - The Guardian UK
An Ensemble Theatre Production
Frankenstein By Nick Dear Forced to survive in the real
world, a man-made creature soon loses his child-like innocence and transforms into an adult being - an adult with bitterness, lust, vengeance and deadly reasoning. The Creature is cast out by his creator (the young doctor Frankenstein) and unleashed upon the world. He is shunned for his grotesque appearance and spurned by society wherever he goes. When a blind man takes Frankenstein’s monstrous creation under his wing and educates him, the Creature begins to question his existence and to yearn for a future without loneliness. His search for a lifelong partner brings him back to his maker, with vengeance foremost in his mind. Mary Shelly’s classic tale is re-imagined in this spine-tingling new version of Frankenstein by British playwright Nick Dear.

plenty about the state of things and the fate of mankind. And so she decides to sit in her overstuffed chair, nevermore to venture outside waiting for the world to end. When her companion dog Geoffrey leaves to live as a man, Penny’s end-ofdays vigil is interrupted by survivalists, a serial killer, a cross-dressing banker, talking dogs and mysterious strangers seeking sanctuary. It is missing its final verse, and the events that occurred at Mt Ragged, not to mention the poet himself, are a mystery. That is until an actor, Craig Castevich, cast to play him in a biopic, visits to gain some insight into his life and poetry. “The chance to actually be on stage and perform in an environment such as GPAC was the most exciting period of my childhood. GPAC will always hold a special place in my ‘theatrical’ heart.” – Guy Pearce, actor
ARTS FOR LIFE -
THE GPAC ENDOWMENT FUND WHAT WILL ARTS FOR LIFE ACHIEVE? Arts for Life will ensure GPAC remains a centre where our children first experience the performing arts; a centre which nurtures local emerging artists; and a centre where both Australian and the world’s finest artists continue to perform on our stages. Additional income through Arts for Life will give the centre the opportunity to confidently plan and build the artistic programs. These include: • Support for the development of emerging artists, education programs and new cultural activities across the Arts Precinct • Increased access for schools, community groups, organisations, and independent producers wishing to present performances at GPAC • A greater number of performances by leading Australian and international artists across the performing arts HOW TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT Arts for Life aims to raise $10 million to be built up over 10 years. There are three principle ways to make a donation to the fund: 1. A Bequest If, once you have remembered your family, you also have the capacity to invest in your community then a bequest - a provision in your will - is the perfect legacy to acknowledge the pleasure you have received from your involvement with GPAC over the years. Such a bequest would normally take the form of a nominated dollar amount or as a percentage of your estate. This is a very personal decision and should only be made after discussion with those assisting you with the drafting of your will. 24
2. A once-off significant donation Once-off significant donations could be in cash, a gift of shares, proceeds from a life insurance policy or a realisable asset. These significant donations could also be made as a bequest. 3. Annual giving Every donation received assists GPAC in the delivery of its annual artistic program. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. DONOR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT There are a number of ways in which donations can be acknowledged depending on the level of support and the degree to which donors wish to be publicly recognised. In acknowledging donations we also celebrate the region’s history, imagination, and courage with donations categorized as follows: William Buckley: (Convict and unofficial first white settler): $50,000-$99,999. Anne Drysdale: (Pioneering squatter at Coryule): $20,000-$49,999. Gilbert Toyne: (Design and patent of first all metal rotary clothes hoist): $5,000-$19,999 Lewis Bandt: (Design of first coupe utility -”ute”): $1,000-$4,999 Fanny Brownbill: (First woman from the region elected to Parliament): $1-$999 FOR MORE INFORMATION For more information please contact: General Manager 5225 1213 Community Relations and Marketing Manager 5225 1214
