GPAC’s 2015 Deakin University Theatre Season

spread your wings Welcome to GPAC’s 2015 Deakin University Theatre Season

Come spread your wings across the nine shows that make up GPAC’s 2O15 Deakin University Theatre Season. We’ve brought together a very special season including Geelong-only performances, international hits, new Australian works and classic stories. Each year we cast our net wide to find out what our theatre companies are producing and what may be travelling to Australia under another banner. Increasingly we are approached directly to ensure an extended life for premiere productions, meaning GPAC is often the only theatre in Victoria to present these works from our major theatre companies. As we manage theatre availability, dates and budgets, we mourn the ones that got away but celebrate the exceptional variety and quality of those that are included. We sometimes find there is crowding in the calendar, and that will be the case in 2015 as you will see… But how could we decline an opportunity to be the only place in Australia to present the iconic Shakespeare’s Globe with Hamlet, alongside the only Victorian performances of Storm Boy and bring The New Zealand Dance Company to Geelong for the first time with Rotunda?

So, in 2015, we have Shakespeare, brass bands, opera, dance, romance, murder, mayhem, fringe dwellers and pelicans – and we need you, our much respected theatre audience, to embrace them all. Our theatre season is only possible because of the support you show by buying tickets and the generosity of our sponsors and donors. As they criss-cross the country, the artists constantly recognise your support, acknowledging your exceptionally warm responses and extensive knowledge of theatre. Please encourage your friends and family to visit when these remarkable works are in Geelong. Or encourage them to plan their regular coastal visits to coincide with the performances. As you read through the following pages, you’ll recognise that this is a season of icons and legends as well as exciting new stories. It is best enjoyed by exploring all – so why not plan your year’s entertainment by buying a season package. Come with a friend, a partner, a colleague or social group. If you cannot attend them all personally, tickets make great gifts.

We look forward to seeing you in the GPAC theatres in 2015. Spread your wings...

Wot? No Fish!! A collaboration between Danny Braverman and Nick Philippou Written and performed by Danny Braverman Directed by Nick Philippou 17 - 21 February, Drama Theatre Wot? No Fish!! is a funny and moving true story of love, art, family and fish balls. In 1926, London shoemaker, Ab Solomons, first drew a picture on the wage packet he gave to his new wife Celie. Then throughout their long marriage, Ab continued to draw or paint on his wage packet every week. These illustrations depict, with remarkable honesty, the ups and downs of their life together. Years later Danny Braverman discovered shoeboxes containing the lost art of his great uncle Ab on more than 2000 wage packets and these gems became the inspiration for Wot? No Fish!! These little pictures are the most incredible family heirloom: intricate and exceptionally personal. From falling in love, to quarrels about fish balls; audiences are taken on a journey of one Jewish family set against the backdrop of a dramatically changing city. Queensland Theatre Company presents

Kelly

By Matthew Ryan 15 - 18 April, Drama Theatre Fast moving and action packed, Kelly sheds a new light on Australia’s most infamous cult heroes. Brothers of the same blood and name, but with very different perspectives. Ned Kelly is about to hang for his crimes, but his final night in prison is interrupted by the arrival of his brother Dan, disguised as a priest. Supposedly killed at the siege of Glenrowan, Dan is intent on moving north to Queensland and forgetting his past. To do so, he needs Ned’s blessing and forgiveness. But the last time they saw each other, Dan tried to shoot Ned dead. So begins a brutal confrontation by two titans of Australian history. Facing the sins of their past, each blames the other for their downfall. And neither will escape unharmed. Dramatically entwining fact, theory and myth, Kelly is masterfully balanced with light and shade, and the quick-fire banter between the characters resonates with a rough but irresistible brand of Australian humour. Rotunda The New Zealand Dance Company presented by arrangement with Arts Projects Australia with support from Creative New Zealand’s Touring Australia Initiative 21 - 23 May, The Playhouse In a first for GPAC, we welcome The New Zealand Dance Company and the Geelong West Brass Band with a new work that brings to life the world of the band rotunda as an iconic symbol of community. Rotunda is inspired by war stories, with the work honouring the themes of loyalty, courage and loss. It is a world where the strength and beauty of powerful live brass collides with that of these extraordinary dancers. And it celebrates the contributions made by brass bands to the soldiers, their families and communities. Rotunda marks the 2014 – 2018 centenary of New Zealand and Australia’s involvement in the First World War. The production, created in collaboration with singer, songwriter and composer Don McGlashan (An Angel at My Table), draws from the indomitable spirit of these ANZAC men, and the women who set about running the country with aching hearts and dread that their men might not return. Love, Love, Love By Mark Bartlett 15 - 18 July, Drama Theatre

Baby boomers beware: this sharp-witted play is all about you and your children…and it’s not all good. Kenneth and Sandra meet in 1967 on the night of the first global TV show on which the Beatles sang ‘All You Need Is Love’ he’s a drunken sponger, she’s a stoned free spirit, and they hit it off immediately. Fast-forward to 1990 and they are comfortably off, middle-class but curiously negligent towards their two children; and facing the wreckage of their marriage. Spanning 40 years Love, Love, Love questions whether the baby boomer generation is to blame for the debt-ridden and adrift generation of their children, now adults but far from stable and settled. It lets loose on the baby boomer generation, but relishes their bygone glory. A tale that embraces romance, treachery, fidelity and infidelity. And, of course, it’s funny. Mother

By Daniel Keene Directed by Matt Scholten 5 - 8 August, Drama Theatre One of Australia’s best loved actors, Noni Hazlehurst, stars in this complex and gritty, provocative and beautiful new work written especially for her. Christy has found herself at the fringe of the world. Homeless, ageing, living on the outskirts of suburbia, she attracts the curiosity of the locals. Christy is not shy of an audience, and amuses herself with telling anyone who’ll listen the story of her life. But beneath her wild exaggerations and fantastic tales of loves lost and struggles overcome, there are the haunting truths that she would rather forget. Mother, a one-woman play, is the newest work from Daniel Keene, directed by his long-time collaborator Matt Scholten. Drawing on the poetry of Dorothy Hewitt, Keene explores Christy’s story. It is part truth, part fiction, and even she is no longer sure which is which. Writer: Daniel Keene Director: Matt Scholten Cast: Noni Hazlehurst Genre: Drama Duration: 70 minutes, no interval Warnings: Contains strong coarse language and adult themes. Children under 15 years not recommended.

Country Song

By Reg Cribb Original concept by Michael Tuahine 27 - 29 August, Playhouse A warm and witty story about Australia’s indigenous singing superstar Jimmy Little AO. This exciting new work comes to Geelong after its world premiere in Brisbane. Master Class By Terrence McNally

16 - 19 September, Drama Theatre Music and theatre lovers will delight in this unforgettable production. Maria Mercedes revels in portraying opera’s most beloved and controversial diva, Maria Callas. Inspired by Callas’ famous 1973 visit to New York’s Julliard School of Music, Master Class is an insightful look into the life and art of opera. Callas prods and provokes her students in a searing, funny, and touching depiction of a woman who knows what it takes to walk the high wire and the sacrifices required to attain the dream. At the time, Callas’ own career singing on the world’s great stages had drawn to a close, her voice a shadow of its former glory. Callas’ story as a woman forced to choose between professional power and a personal life remains as relevant as ever. Four years later, Callas’ death at the age of 51 sealed her legend as a tragic heroine.
