Member Report and Recipe - Greg Jacobs September 16, 2015, was the 96th birthday of the American Legion, so Greg decided to create a salute to the Legion in his camp Dutch oven. But what to make? Luckily he found the original WW1 Salvation Army Donut Recipe (see below) and made a batch. The members enjoyed the doughnuts with their coffee. Greg said, “The doughnuts were gone in a few minutes.” Thank you Greg for sharing this wonderful story with us!

Minutes Minutes from the LSDOS Board Meeting of January 17, 2015, were presented and had been previously published in the First Quarter 2015 newsletter. There were no additions or corrections. Scott Sutton moved that the minutes be approved as written. Leslie Lovett seconded the motion. The motion was approved. Trustee Report Tina Morris presented the Trustee report including the Statement of Revenue and Expenses for the Twelve Month Period Ending December 31, 2015, and the Monthly Bank Reconciliation for December 2015. Net loss for 2015 was $1,487.46, less than half the budgeted loss of $3,100.00. Most notable expense was the 100% chapter incentive payments returned to the chapters. The year-end computed book balance for the bank account was $5,798.92 and the year-end savings account balance was $14,478.41. New Chapters Robin Clute reported that the East Texas Black Pot Cookers have met all requirements to become a chapter of LSDOS. Richard Cade is the chapter advisor. They meet at the Martin Creek Lake State Park at Tatum, about 20 miles south of Longview, Texas. Website Greg Petrey presented the website report for Victoria Nichols who is working at redesigning the website. Website traffic is down nearly 23%. It remains very popular. Newsletter Leslie Lovett is seeking inputs for the current newsletter which she plans to complete within two weeks. The deadline for the next newsletter is the second Sunday in March. She would welcome member spotlights, recipes, news of events, and photos. Rick Caldwell asked if members should submit news through the chapter advisors. The answer is yes. Leslie will welcome ideas and she will help you develop those ideas. Greg Petrey recommended hiring a professional to communicate the LSDOS brand to the public. This would include the newsletter, the website, and social media. The website needs to be the core of our information and needs to be updated. LSDOS will keep the domain name. After discussion Rick Caldwell moved that the Board investigate our communication needs. Scott Sutton seconded the motion and all approved. 2015 NDOG

For logistical reasons there was no LSDOS booth at the 2015 National DOG at Bryce Canyon, Utah, but we did donate $500 in sponsorship as budgeted and spent $584.70 for LSDOS promotional items (towels). The latter exceeded the budget of $500. 2016 NDOG We have sent $500 in sponsorship for the 2016 National DOG to be held in Loudonville, OH, June 24-26, 2016. The 2016 budget also includes $500 for promotional items. Leslie Lovett volunteered to help with a mostly unattended display booth/table with flyers, applications, etc. Robin and Dennis Clute and Steve and Leslie Lovett will set up the booth but not attend the booth. The 2017 NDOG in California will be addressed at the membership meeting. The 2018 NDOG is set for Kansas. A Dutch Oven Yahoo Group decides where NDOGs will be. 2016 LSDOS Big DOG Rick Caldwell reported that the 2016 LSDOS Big DOG is planned for April 15-17, 2016, at Salmon Lake Park. There will be a kid’s cook-off to be judged at dinner time with the possibility of an iTunes card as a prize. There may also be a Taster’s Choice fun cook-off. Leslie volunteered to do the cook-off. Mary Merriwether will help with goody bags. Demonstrations will include Rachel and Ray Villasenior on tamale making, Leslie Lovett on cake shaping, Scott Sutton on sourdough, and JoBeth Hicks on fire starters. Leslie volunteered to work up a schedule. Consensus was to have breakfast at 9:00 a.m. and dinner at 5:00 p.m. with lunch optional. This is a free event for LSDOS members. Cost for non-members is $20, the price of a membership, and we hope they will join LSDOS. We plan to continue to “go-green” by bringing our own plates and utensils. 2016 Membership Meeting Leslie Lovett reported on the 2016 Membership Meeting for Dan and Kerry Poggemiller who will host the meeting. Two site options were proposed for October 8, 2016. The first was Big Chief RV & Cabin Resort on the east side of Lake Buchanan near Burnet, TX. The other site was the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) South Shore Park on Lake Bastrop. The latter was rejected in that the $175 meeting/dining facility was too expensive. Leslie moved that we go with the Big Chief RV & Cabin Resort which had more reasonable meeting hall fees at $35 plus $0.15 per kilowatt. Gretchen Davidson seconded the motion and all were in favor with the caveat that tent camping be confirmed. During the meeting the resort was contacted by phone and they absolutely do not accept tent campers. Leslie will ask the Poggemillers to select another site but in that general vicinity. Gretchen Davidson pointed out that Black Rock Park across the lake does accept tent campers. She will report back to the board. Liability Insurance

A Quote was received from Quirk & Company for the renewal of the LSDOS liability insurance. The quote was for a $900 annual premium, the same as last year. Leslie moved that we accept the quote. Terry Morris seconded the motion and all approved. By-Laws No action is needed on the By-Laws. A summary of the changes made at the July 25, 2015, Membership meeting was given. One was a clarification to ensure that no more than one member from any chapter may serve as an officer at any one time. The second change was to slip the ballot deadline to November 15 to allow the membership meeting to be held later in the year in order to avoid the extreme summer heat. 2016 Budget Tina Morris presented the 2016 LSDOS budget which has $7,300 in income and $10,120 in expenses assuming a 100% return to chapters for chapter incentives. This would result in a net loss of $2,820. Leslie moved that we put $2,500 in the budget to hire a professional website developer to redesign the LSDOS website. Shervonne Smithey seconded the motion and the motion was approved. Chapter Activity Joe Huber stated that we need to know which chapters are active and which chapters are not active. Incentive checks should not go to inactive chapters. Gretchen Davidson said this should be a by-laws requirement. Tina Morris will begin sending a quarterly list of chapter members to each chapter advisor. Leslie Lovett asked that the minutes reflect that an activity report from chapters be required in order for the chapter to receive an incentive check. Terry Morris moved that chapters must send an activity report in order to receive an incentive check. Leslie seconded the motion and the motion was approved. This may be considered for a by-laws revision in 2017. A letter will be sent to chapter advisors requesting the report prior to the membership meeting. The reports will also be helpful for the newsletter and the website calendar. Communications Stephanie Vickery expressed concern that our communications have been lacking. A number of members don’t use Facebook. Email news is also needed. It was pointed out that there is a listserve (board@lsdos.com) that goes to the board members. This would be one way of getting news out to officers and chapter advisors. Mary Merriwether suggested putting a list of chapter advisors with contact information in our newsletters. Robin posts any news of chapter events that she receives on the website calendar. 2017 LSDOS Bog DOG Robin Clute pointed out that we need a host for the 2017 LSDOS Big DOG. Announcements

We are looking at redesigning the LSDOS bumper sticker or replacing it with a window cling which includes our logo. This could go on the outside of the window. Robin will investigate. LSDOS will now carry only cookbooks, aprons, and caps. Membership dues for 2016 are now due. 2016 membership stands at 58 plus those renewing during the Board Meeting weekend. Robin read a letter to LSDOS from the Governor of Arkansas, Asa Hutchinson, thanking us for sponsoring the Cookin’ for Kids fundraiser in Morrilton, Arkansas. This annual event is held at Petit Jean State Park in June. The 83rd Assembly declared the cast iron Dutch oven an official state historic cooking vessel of the State of Arkansas. The Tejas chapter is providing Dutch oven desserts for the Grapeland Library Wild Game Tasting to be held February 20, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. for benefit of the Grapeland Public Library. The event will be held at the CafÊ and Creamery at 140 S. Main in Grapeland. Any Dutch oven cooks wishing to prepare desserts for the tasting are invited to help the Tejas chapter. Those who travel by RV are welcome to camp at the Sunshine Inn area of Salmon Lake Park but we will not have access to the building. Tejas Chapter members promoting this activity are Linda Reed, Jayne Stuart, and chapter advisor Bob Pridgen. 2017 LSDOS Board Meeting The Sunshine Inn area at Salmon Lake Park is available on January 13-15, 2017, if we wish to hold the LSDOS Board Meeting and associated DOG there again. Access to the free (with 10 camping units) heated and air-conditioned facility with kitchen, restrooms, and showers is ideal for our Board meetings. Camping fees (RV or tents) are $22 for 30-amps and $27 for 50 amps. Cabins are also available. Terry Morris moved that we hold the 2017 LSDOS Board Meeting at Salmon Lake Park. Mary Merriwether seconded the motion and all were in favor. The Board meeting will be January 14, 2017. Shervonne Smithey moved that the meeting be adjourned. The motion was seconded by Rick Caldwell and all were in favor. The meeting was adjourned at 5:20 p.m. Minutes respectfully submitted,

Stephanie Vickery, LSDOS Secretary
