Imagine Process

FROM LEGACY TO IMAGINE January - May 2015

The story of how I came to design the campaign for Imagine is long and includes many twists. I initially was asked by a friend if I wanted to run as a senator, but I was more interested in designing instead of running. I then became the designer of my friend’s coalition, Legacy. Within a week of finalizing the logo and going public, the coalition decided to combine with another coalition that had yet to be formed or named. The nameless coalition was deciding between the names “Bridge” and “Imagine”, but were leaning towards Bridge. I quickly made a logo for Bridge before their first meeting only to have the future coalition members choose Imagine. So I was tasked with designing a third logo. While working on the campaign, I met some great people who contribute so much to Senate and the University. I learned a lot, especially working under deadlines and quick turnarounds. It was a lot of work, but completely worth it. In the next couple pages you will find my work and progress, beginning with Legacy. It’s crazy looking back at everything I created and the path I took to come up with the final idea.

LEGACY

LEGACY INITIAL CONCEPTS The idea behind the name Legacy was that this was a group of people who wanted to create a new path, a new legacy for the students at KU. I wasn’t given that much direction in the beginning when creating the Legacy logo, except that they wanted to include wheat to symbolize Kansas and the color scheme to go with the KU Identity. They wanted a logo that was strong and clean. I decided to use the font Gotham because of it’s strong , professional presence.

LEGACY INITIAL CONCEPTS After reviewing some of the initial logos, it was decided to add in something that could be tied to KU. I decided to work with Fraser Hall and the Campanile because they are so iconic and so easy to connect to the university. I struggled with not making the addition of the building too literal while still keeping it recognizable.

A BREAKTHROUGH

LEGACY LEGACY LEGACY

I was not feeling confident about my logo and felt pressure from the coalition to finish up the logo soon. One day I was looking DICKERSON & FARLOW DICKERSON & FARLOW through inspiration and noticed that a logo with someDICKERSON wheat in & FARLOW it looked like it could be the Campanile (I had obviously spent too much time looking at the Campanile). That gave me the idea of using the wheat to create the Campanile, combining the two wants of the coalition.

A BREAKTHROUGH

LEGACY

This logo quickly became my favorite but there was a problem with readability. I became a broken record as I would ask everyone on my dorm floor and in my classes what they see when I showed them the logo. 0Only people who had grown up as a Jayhawk or were in the design program were able to distinguish DICKERSON & FARLOW what it was.

A COMP ROMISE The people of Legacy weren’t as excited about the logo as I was. I worked on trying to make it more readable without losing its simplicity.

NEW CONCEPT I went back to the drawing boards when it became official that the wheat/Campanile logo wasn’t going to work out. They still liked the combination of the wheat and the Campanile so I didn’t have to retreat that far back.

A FINAL CONCEPT The people of Legacy ended up really liking the bottom concepts. The concept quickly became the official logo of the student coalition Legacy. It was such a great feeling to see my work being used and shared around the internet. Although I was pleased with my design, I felt I could have done something better.

BRIDGE

STARTING ANEW Within a week of launching Legacy, I was told that the coalition would be combining with a nameless coalition that had yet to launch. I was given the option to design for the new coalition and immediately took it. I had learned so much from working on the first one and I wanted another shot at designing a logo. I hit the ground running with the new coalition. The coalition was deciding between the two names “Bridge” and “Imagine” but wanted the decision to be made by those in the coalition. They were leaning towards the name Bridge and wanted me to create a logo for Bridge for their first meeting, which was happening in the evening. They assured me that they would try and push Bridge as the new name. So I quickly got to work to create a logo to show that evening. Fun fact, the bridge used in these logos is modeled after the bridge crossing the Kansas River at the end of Massachusetts Street.

STARTING ANEW I wanted to suitability show the connection between Legacy and Bridge, hence the fields of wheat. The people of Bridge liked the initial concepts so I stuck with that idea and just worked on finding the perfect fit between all the ideas.

THE FINAL BRIDGE Below is the logo that was decided upon. Unfortunately, nobody outside of Bridge was able to see it. The Imagine was chosen as the coalition name so it was time for me to design a third logo.

A THIRD START So here I was tasked with creating a third logo. Because it was assumed that Bridge would be chosen, there wasn’t a concept behind Imagine. I literally had a blank slate with this logo and it was very intimidating. I had to quickly come up with a logo so I took my first idea and ran with it. Luckily, I really liked my idea along with the rest of the coalition. The main idea of this coalition was to be a voice for the entire campus. They wanted everyone’s ideal image of KU to be made a reality and the coalition was ready to work towards it. I took that concept and created a shape meant to mimic a thought bubble or idea. This became one of the main logos used throughout the campaign. The logo below it was used the most and was the “generic” idea. One of my ideas was to create a bubble for each person with their idea for KU but there wasn’t enough time to complete that project.

A THIRD START These two were also a part of the main logos used interchangeably during the campaign. I don’t remember my exact reasoning behind creating a flower shape but I thought it was an interesting way to package the thought bubbles. The coalition ended up creating five major platforms to correspond with the six petals. The main logo was used as the top logo.

PLATFORMS Here is a close-up of each of the platform drops, as we began to call them. The items in the drop correspond with what the platform is about. I had fun adding color to the campaign. Below is a progression of the platforms that I created for social media use but were never used.

PLATFORM BLU RBS Below are the information guides that were released that explained what each platform was about. These were used to get the basics across of what Imagine was running on.

FLYERS AND POSTERS I created flyers and posters that were to be used during election week and tabling. The top two flyers were frequently handed out because they easily summed up what Imagine stood for while informing who was running in the party. The two posters below unfortunately were never printed but I loved the simplicity and strong message they sent.

BIOS AND ENDORSEMENTS I also created biographies were shared on Imagine social media and that each candidate shared on their personal social media. The photographs used in the biographies were from a large coalition photoshoot that I helped direct. Each biography featured which school they were running for and why they wanted to run as a senator for Imagine. The bottom two are endorsements from students, teachers, and other faculty that voiced their support for Imagine. I kept the layouts simple on both of these items because I wanted the quotes to speak for themselves.

“This coalition is more than just politics. This is a community of individuals not just handing over papers with their necessities and demands. It is a community of individuals who are learning not only to fade out of being background noise, but who are also learning to utilize their voices.”

“I am a member of a great team of diverse, involved, and passionate students who are ready to learn, represent, and transform KU into the university we all envision. Imagine is not only a coalition, but a movement and a step in the right direction.”

Ally Briggs BIOLOGY AND LEADERSHIP STUDIES CO-DIRECTOR OF ALTERNATIVE BREAKS “I Imagine a KU campus that is committed to building a community of students that are not afraid to engage in difficult conversations in order to better represent, understand, and help students. For me, Student Senate is not just about individuals, but the impact a system of students can make. I believe that Imagine embodies these ideals and can transform the relationship between Senate and the University.” IMAGINE

OVERALL EXPERIENCE I learned so much as a designer for Legacy, Bridge, and Imagine. I learned how to work under pressure and tight deadlines while meeting great people at KU. The Imagine logo is my favorite out of all the logos. I was given total creativity with creating the Imagine logo and I’m amazed on how well it ended up working out. Although I’m not sure if I will be designing for a campaign next spring, I am sure glad I did for this campaign.
