The Power of Prayer What did you pray for today? What and who is on your prayer list? What are you believing God for? No doubt you prayed for your family and loved ones today. Perhaps you may have prayed about your home, your finances and/or your health. I believe you would agree that prayer is single handedly the most powerful tool we possess. Prayer lays the foundation for sweet dreams at night, and prayer jump starts us at the dawn of a new day. Some of us even whisper a little prayer as we go about our daily activities. We know that prayer is one of the best ways to communicate with God and to spend time with God. In fact the bible tells us to, “Pray without ceasing.” I Thessalonians 5:17 We all know that prayer changes things. There is plenty of proof in the Word of God to validate prayer and the benefits of prayer. One of God’s promises is that He hears us when we pray. Isn’t good to know that no matter what we are faced with, we can go boldly to the throne and make our petitions known to God and He will answer? The Word of God tells us that, “What things soever ye desire, when you pray, believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them.” Mark 11:24 Prayer is not only a tool but it is a powerful weapon that we all possess. It can break strongholds, heal the sick, bind the brokenhearted and send the enemy fleeing away from you. There are times when it may seem that our prayers have not been answered fast enough. But we discover while we wait for an answer that answer is always right on time. “The effectual fervent prayer of a

righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16) Much has happened and time waits for no one. Our world, our country, our state, our city, and our neighborhoods are in a state of emergency. There is so much heartache and devastation in the land. The media paints a grim picture every day, reporting some of the worst events in our history. From natural disasters and manmade disasters, terrorists attacks, murders, childabuse, sexual abuse, homelessness, unemployment, and the list goes on; we cannot just go about our lives and turn a deaf ear. We can’t just resolve that all is lost and there is no hope for things to change. I do believe that all is not lost; because I believe prayer still works and prayer still changes things. There are millions of believers in this world, in our country and in our cities. God promises us in His Word, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14 Along with our daily prayers, let’s all resolve to pray for our land (our world) EVERYDAY. It could make all the difference in the world. Did you remember to pray today? “Man ought always to pray.” Luke 18:1 Jackie Epps

Q&A

Interview with

Bishop Walter Scott Thomas, Sr. “This is my exclusive interview with Bishop Walter Scott Thomas, Sr. marking his 40th Pastoral Anniversary. There was so much I wanted to ask him and so much he could have shared with us that there wouldn’t have been enough pages to capture it all. Not only did I appreciate his answers but I was also in awe of this man of God and his insight and wisdom. Here is a glimpse into his 40 year journey.” - Jackie Epps G&G: Bishop Thomas, though you have talked with us a few times before, I consider this opportunity to interview you a special honor as you celebrate your 40th Pastoral Anniversary. Can you believe it, 40 YEARS? Many of us including myself have followed you down through the years. I must say 40 looks good on you. How do you feel right now, has the reality of it sunk in? Bishop Thomas: The reality of it hasn’t sunk in fully because the 40 years were lived day by day; and they just add up to 40 years. Sometimes it seems like a long time, sometimes it seems like a short time, but it never seems like enough time; enough time to get done what I would have liked to get done and try everything I would have liked to try. It seems like time is speeding up. G&G: Bishop Thomas there is so much we could talk about; let’s go back to when this 40 year journey first begun. Looking back at where you were when you started this journey, where did you think it was going to lead you? Are you at all surprised at where you are today? Bishop Thomas: I am 100% surprised at where I am. When I started, I had no clue where we would be. My aim and my hope was that people would come to the little church on North Ave. and Druid Hill that was known by the food market it was located beside. I had no idea we would grow and become the church that we are now with the different ministries and opportunities that we offer and the banner that we carry. I also have the privilege to lead the Kingdom Association of Covenant Pastors (KACP). KACP is a wonderful organization of Pastors that come together to strengthen each other, learn from each other, and we strive to take kingdom work to the next level. As a matter of fact, this year marks our 10 year anniversary. I am blessed to serve as their Presiding Prelate. I would have never imagined this 40 years ago.

G&G: Bishop Thomas, when you first started this ministry were there any nay-sayers, people who may have told you that you were wasting your time and that you would fail? How did you overcome/handle this and still continue to follow your passion? Bishop Thomas: Well, I didn’t have anybody telling me I would fail or that it wouldn’t succeed. I don’t allow those kind of people to even function in my space. If I ever had them in my space, they were X’d out, so that wasn’t something I had to deal with. I always, however, had to contend with how to make something happen, not that it might fail or that people said it wasn’t going to succeed. That was never an issue for me. The issue for me was always how. G&G: Bishop Thomas, what was the turning point in your journey or that moment when you realized that God had called you to an assignment of this magnitude? Bishop Thomas: It was in 1981, when the parking lot beside our church downtown was closed to us because they were going to build Basilica Place. That was our chief place for parking downtown, and they shut it down one Sunday and 33 people joined church on that Sunday, the largest number that we had ever seen join. It was a sign to me that God was about to do something significant and major. G&G: Bishop Thomas, along with this awesome assignment, what were some of the unexpected hurdles and some of the unexpected benefits? Bishop Thomas: Well, I never expected to be moving. The first time we moved, it was an opportunity someone presented us with. The second time it was out of necessity. The third time it was again necessity that we move. Those were totally unexpected, but they empowered us to become a greater force

Q&A so when things get really bad, you make sure you go see your supervisor and let Him pick up the slack. Also I would tell someone going into the pastorate to be wide in G&G: Bishop Thomas, what was your breath of knowledge the biggest risk you have taken that and understanding, achieved great results? because what you can Bishop Thomas: One of the biggest pull from the wide array risks was to believe that we could of knowledge of life, the do the assignment to move our world, and the spirit, ministry to our current building. It can only serve you was expensive and it was at a time good. Don’t be narrow of recession. It was a time when minded in your study and persons’ faith was weak, and yet it your accumulation of was a time that God said this is the information and wisdom; New Psalmist Baptist Church current building season to do it. but make it as broad and expansive as you can. Also, learn to enjoy the journey. G&G: Bishop Thomas, I believe part of your 40 year legacy is You will burn out quick if you don’t enjoy what you do and how you have pastored the New Psalmist Baptist Church with if you don’t have that passion for it. If seeing people’s lives such passion. I heard Bishop T. D. Jakes say in a message that changed and eyes opened, seeing great things being done for great passion does not come without great pain. Is this a true the kingdom, and seeing the impossible made possible doesn’t statement for your journey? really turn you on, don’t even start this. Do something else. Bishop Thomas: I think pain is something that we all share I think Pastors are leaving ministry because they get burned and that we all endure. When there is great passion there is out. I think they are holding on by a thread and they just get great pain because there is a great price. You’re always giving burned out. There are very few places for pastors to go to up something. Life is nothing but an assortment of trade-offs. actually talk in a support way about what they are dealing You’re trading one thing for something else. You’re not always with. Sure, somebody can go into counseling and therapy but choosing between good and evil. Sometimes you’re choosing the majority of pastors haven’t and aren’t, and there are very between two goods, and sometimes you’re choosing between few places where a conversation can be had on that subject. two bads. The old folk used to say the lesser of two evils. But I think many of them are just worn out by the competing often you’re choosing between two goods, two competing goods tradeoffs and the choices that have to always be made without that are in your space, and that is the price you have to pay. You the proper undergirding and foundation for making those have to let something go in order to accomplish what the Lord choices. They feel as if God is pressuring them instead of the wants done, and in the back of your mind you always wonder fact that God has them and He is going to take care of them if you paid the right price. God’s favor however is always the and everything connected to them. right price. G&G: Bishop Thomas, what encourages you most as the pastor of the New Psalmist Baptist Church? What do you do to ensure G&G: Bishop Thomas, after 40 years of ministry, I believe it’s you continue to grow and develop as their pastor? safe to say that you are a successful pastor with a successful Bishop Thomas: What encourages me most as pastor of New ministry? What would you say it takes to be a successful pastor Psalmist is seeing people change for the better and getting it today? What are your thoughts on why so many pastors are and becoming empowered to not only succeed in what God has leaving ministry? Bishop Thomas: Well I think one thing it takes is an given them to do, but then become a witness to Him. However, unconquerable belief that this work is the Lord’s. We work what keeps me going is the revelation that I am not finished, for Him. We are not Him. Also, an indefatigable faith in God that there is still new territory to be discovered in living for God that He will somehow work things out, not always the way and still more territory to be discovered internally about God. we want but the sun will come up tomorrow; and the sun will set tonight, and we will still be here, and there will still be G&G: Bishop Thomas, can you name a person who has had a life, and there will still be possibilities. I think that it is key tremendous impact on you as a leader? Maybe someone who has for any Pastor to understand that this is not your work. This been a mentor to you? How did this person impact your life? is God’s work and you work for Him. He is your supervisor, for the kingdom. Each change brought out new gifts and abilities and skills and carried us to another level of ministry and church.

Bishop Thomas: I can name a few. Dr. Alfred Vaughn is one that comes to mind. He has the ability to always understand how to navigate a situation. He always knows how to be calm under pressure. He also taught me to look for the meaning in serious and stressful moments. He has played a tremendous role in my space in that regard. My father taught me to be realistic and to always be mindful of what is the realism of a moment. He stressed that you shouldn’t get so far out in the clouds that you forget the realism of a situation, what you are really up against, and how you are dealing with it. Dr. Harold A. Carter, Sr., as a leader, was instrumental in that he taught me that if you lead people they will follow. You have to be intentional however, about leading. You can’t assume they are following. You have to set a course and people will follow.

Bishop Thomas and Dr. Harold A. Carter, Sr.

G&G: Bishop Thomas, I’m sure in 40 years you have experienced many changes in the ministry of the New Psalmist Baptist Church and in ministry as a whole. What would you say is the most significant change that has impacted your church and how we ‘do’ church today? Where do you think ministry will be in the next five years? Bishop Thomas: I think the biggest thing we did was become relevant to the 21st century. We presented Christ in the 21st century in a way that people, who were 21st century citizens, could understand him. We didn’t keep trying to make church the church of 1975, but we evolved, we morphed into the church that is ministering to this generation, just as Jesus did not try to take the generation that he came to back to Old Testament times, but he ministered with the Old Testament in the times they were in. I think that’s been one of our key successes. We have constantly discerned the times, and understood the message that was necessary, or understood how to speak the message so it would be heard in the times in which we were speaking it. In the next 5 years, I think ministry will be far more visual, religion will return to being an encounter and an experience, as the word will be within the shell of an experience and an encounter. People will want to encounter God and be close to God, not just hear from God. They will be bringing their whole person to God: body, mind and spirit. I think in the next five years, we are also

G&G: Bishop Thomas, I understand that this year there was a major change in your ministry and family, your son leaving New Psalmist to pastor his own church. You must be elated with pride and joy. How does it feel to have watched your son grow in ministry and now embark on the same journey you have been on for 40 Years? Bishop Thomas: It is simply amazing. It’s like having grandchildren. It’s that kind of joy. I’m seeing him start on the same journey I started, further ahead in that journey than I started, but I’m watching him start and seeing him with the gifts and graces necessary to do it. Above all, I’m watching the passion that he has for it and the love that is already beginning to grow for the people and the place where God has put him. It’s just astounding. I look forward to talking to him each day and especially on Saturday and Sunday about what happened, and how it went and how things are moving. God has His own future for him and His own plan, and it’s wonderful to be watching it. G&G: Bishop Thomas, what advice or words of wisdom did you give to your son; what would you say to that pastor who has just started the journey of a pastor? Bishop Thomas: Some of the advice I gave him was to study the situation and learn before you change anything. Understand that the only person who probably doesn’t like something is the person who wants it changed. I encouraged him to stay the course and take time as Ezekiel did to sit with the people and find out what the real needs are, because the real needs won’t be cosmetic; they will be soul needs. Find out what they are and then minister to that. Let the people love you; let them love you while you are loving them. Be with them, share with them, be among them, and be around them so they get to love you as you get to love them. Also, preach and teach so that the body of Christ can grow. Make preaching and teaching the hallmark of that ministry so that the people begin to feed on the word. I think this same advice is worthy for any pastor that is going forward to understand that it is the people you are called to, so you have to figure out how you will bring this message into their space, and that only comes from sitting with them. Anytime you go in wanting to change anything, start this and start that, it’s more about your program than it is about them and God sent you to them to see what they need and minister to them. ◆◆◆

Q&A G&G: Bishop Thomas, my last few questions are more on a personal note. Do you have a personal mission statement? What keeps you motivated and drives you? Bishop Thomas: My mission is to empower persons in such a way that they feel encouraged to be able to do fully, brilliantly and completely whatever Jesus Christ has assigned them to do. That keeps me motivated. I’m forever seeking ways to accomplish that and I’m always being introduced to new people who want that accomplished in their lives.

of way known to man just about. Also whenever I get down in the dumps I play the organ for hours. G&G: Is there anything that keeps you awake at night? Bishop Thomas: No, not really. G&G: If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be? Bishop Thomas: I’d be home sitting in a chair, eating my wife’s cooking with her and watching TV.

From Bishop Thomas’ Sons & Daughters and Colleagues “When I think about the remarkable journey of my Pastor, Bishop Walter Scott Thomas, Sr., the following words come to mind: Encourager, Enthusiastic and Educator. Thank you, Sir, for being a positive source of inspiration and for pushing me and others to be all that God has designed for us to be. You are indeed an Epic Leader.” – Bishop Oscar E. Brown, Pastor- First Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “From the age of 15, the most significant voice aside from my biological father has been Bishop Walter Thomas. His selfless sharing of time, wisdom, support and trust has shaped my personal, professional and spiritual life. I am reminded whenever mentoring other preachers the extreme value of purposeful leadership and intentional modeling of discipleship I learned from Bishop Thomas. His 40 years of ministry have been incredibly life changing.” – Dr. William Curtis, Pastor- Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Pittsburg, PA “Bishop Walter S. Thomas is a true ministry phenomena. I am often awed by his intelligence, creativity and energy. As a spiritual son of my late father, Dr. Harold A. Carter, I have known "Bishop" most of my life, inasmuch as he spent numerous hours with my father, as well as in our home during his formative years. I have often said to my father & colleagues that he is one of the smartest people I know. A tremendous family man, pastor/preacher, mentor (life-coach), and friend, Monique & our family, along with the New Shiloh family join with countless others in the faith community in giving praise to God for giving us the gift of Bishop Thomas, Lady Patricia & the entire Thomas family & ministry.” – Dr. Harold A. Carter, Jr., Pastor- New Shiloh Baptist Church/ Baltimore, MD “Bishop Thomas: Congratulations on 40 years of excellence in pastoral ministry. I consider my life enriched beyond measure by my 31 years under your spiritual leadership and guidance. My family and I are eternally grateful that God made you an integral part of our spiritual DNA. I can honestly say that without his guidance in my ministry and my life I would be lacking the necessary tools skills and exposure to be effective. Bishop Walter Scott Thomas, Sr. is without equivocation one of God¹s greatest gifts to my life. As we celebrate his 40th pastoral anniversary I thank God every day when I think of him!!!!!” – Bishop Dwayne C. Personally, God has used Bishop Thomas to see His purpose in my life, speak that purpose, and provide opportunities for that purpose to be manifested. He has demonstrated that the maintenance of personal integrity, marital and family wholeness and pastoral effectiveness is something to be desired and achieved.” – Bishop Claude R. If one were to conduct an audit on ethics among clergy in this country during the 21st Century, it would be very apparent why Bishop Walter Scott Thomas is considered an asset to Christian ministry. Although the New Psalmist Church serves as his ministry base, the entire city of Baltimore has been impacted by his character, charisma, and leadership. I am eternally grateful to have Bishop Thomas as an incredible role model, trail blazer and mentor. Looking at all these years in ministry, and counting on all my fingers and toes, God’s grace still doesn't add up! However, the one thing that does is that Bishop Walter Thomas is undeniably number one!” – Dr. Jamal H. Bryant, Pastor- Empowerment Temple Church/ Baltimore, MD “A Senior Statesman and one the most brilliant minds of our time, Bishop Walter Scott Thomas epitomizes leadership. Our hearts compel us to honor you on this remarkable occasion, the celebration of forty years of Pastoral Ministry. I unite with a host of Pastors and Leaders all over the world, who celebrate your extraordinary example of ministry and service to the New Psalmist Baptist Church, the City of Baltimore and the Body of Christ. Faye and I are honored to share our expressions of admiration and respect for you on this great occasion. Thank you for your years of sacrifice and labor.” – Pastor Shawn Bell & Lady Faye Bell- Greater Paradise Baptist Church/Baltimore, MD "God bless you Bishop for teaching us by your life's work that we must never settle for mediocrity in kingdom building but we must always Press Towards The Mark..." – Dr. Peggy Wall, Pastor- Saint John AME Church/ Baltimore, MD “Congratulations to Bishop Walter Scott Thomas, Sr. for 40 years of faithful service to the Lord's precious people at the New Psalmist Baptist Church!” – The Rev. Kadri J. Webb, Pastor- St. John Missionary Baptist Church/Oceanside, CA

“Bishop Walter Scott Thomas has been a consistent blessing and role model for ministers in this city and beyond. It is a joy to co-labor with him in this city. On this your 40th pastoral anniversary we wish you all of God’s best. May God reward your faithfulness and may you enjoy many more years of fulfillment.” – Pastor Linwood & Dr. Karen S. Bethea - Set The Captives Free Outreach Center/Windsor Mills, MD “Congratulations Bishop Walter Scott Thomas on this your 40th Pastoral Anniversary! You and Lady Patricia G. Thomas have brilliantly led and served the New Palmist Baptist Church faithfully for four decades. May you continue to provide anointed, vibrant, and empowering ministry for the communities and world as you model excellence in proclamation, visionary ideas, ministry values and practical ministry. We pray nothing but success for your ministry for many years to come. Happy Anniversary!” – Rev. Dr. Ruby C. Gilliam, Senior Pastor- Divine Wisdom Christian Center B.C/ Baltimore, MD “Bishop Walter Scott Thomas, Jr. Congratulations on 40 stellar years of Kingdom ministry. You have been a mentor and model for me of integrous and innovative ministry. Thank you for demonstrating to the world how to walk with God, love your family, and empower disciples of Christ. May God continue to strengthen and reward you for the journey that He has entrusted to you. Happy 40th!” – Dr. Donte’ L. Hickman, Sr., Pastor- Southern Baptist Church/ Baltimore, MD “Bishop Walter Thomas personifies excellence in scholarship, relationships, spirituality, and innovation. He is one of the smartest and most industrious persons on the planet. This is crystal clear in his conversation as well as in the organizational leadership and mentoring that he provides. The story of modernity and post-modernity, with respect to the Black Church cannot be accurately told without acknowledging his contributions and impact.” – Dr. Reginald Thomas, Sr., Pastor- Greater Gethsemane Baptist Church/Baltimore, MD “Forty years ago, God blessed the New Psalmist family with a leader, whose impact and influence are now known and felt around the world. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1, follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ; likewise, the leadership and mentorship of Bishop Walter S. Thomas, Sr. has shaped generations of pastors and leaders across our nation. It is with great joy and appreciation, that I join his other spiritual children and grandchildren, in extending honor and accolades on his 40th pastoral anniversary!” – Dr. Lisa M. Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. 19For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. 20Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, 21the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. 22For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. 24We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it. 25But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)26And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. 28And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 29For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. 18

My entire professional broadcasting career is built upon a foundation of people who were willing to pass along to me what they knew about the business. Radio announcer Bill Savitz was one of the very first people assigned to share with me his knowledge of broadcasting. He stopped by my high school humanities class one afternoon in the spring of 1976. He was in search of four students to record a radio public service announcement. It was an announcement designed to encourage voting age students to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming election. He didn’t realize it at the time, but I’d had listened to his local news broadcast on the family radio for more than a decade. The afternoon at the high school led to a short recording session and subsequently many more hours of encouragement. I believe this is just one example of how each of us can commit to passing along our knowledge of life experiences and our faith to the next generation of young people. This mandate of sorts is something that was highly recommended in the Holy Scriptures. There was a certain set of life lessons in place to be learned and then shared. It was suggested that they were to be passed along to members of one’s own family and done so in the home. As a part of our child-rearing years, my wife and I have sought to pass along much of what was passed along to us from our parents; namely, the love of God, respect of oneself and others as well. Our children are adults now. We now take time to observe how they are passing along some of the same values and sayings to their children and to their siblings. There’s a good chance there’s someone in your home, community, workplace or church that would benefit from passed along information. Furthermore, we shouldn’t allow generational barriers to prevent us from sharing life knowledge. The wisdom writer of the book of Ecclesiastes reminds us of this: “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes1:9). I encourage you to look for opportunities to share your life story. Share the good, the bad and the unfortunate. I am convinced that all of it will help shape the thinking of those who are willing to listen. I have learned quickly that in our technological world that it’s important to save important documents. In fact, I am saving the words of this column on my computer’s hard drive as well as a separate flash drive. In doing so, I am able to go back and find what was saved. One of the great things about a flash drive is that it’s portable. You can place it in your pocket, purse or briefcase. In a matter of minutes, you can insert the flash drive into any number of electronic devices and access the contents. One may ask the question, how accessible am I to that young man or young woman whose path I may cross? The things passed along to them may very well help to shape and transform their future. woman’s perspective

Hello my love She-EOs! We are going to take a break this month from our Virtuous Women series. We will resume our series next month. You may be asking what exactly is a She-EO? Well I’m glad that you have asked. In the beginning after God creates Adam, He gives us our instructions and lets us know that while here we are to, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and SUBDUE it.” (Genesis 1:28) In essence we are instructed to increase ourselves, infiltrate and rule. Despite what some may think, we are all created and instructed by God to lead and have dominion. Sounds like a CEO to me, what about you? But since we’re ladies we’ll affectionately call ourselves She-EO. We are each called to be the She-EO of our lives as led by His spirit. We are called to “SheEO” and reign in the sphere of influence that God has given us. My sphere of influence has me constantly working with and interacting with female leaders and one of the things God has put on my heart is to assist them with cultivating wellness in every area of their lives, Spirit, Soul, Body and Business. Why is that important? Often we compartmentalize sections of our lives and make decisions for individual sectors not realizing that all of the areas of our lives are interconnected and so we must work to create harmony in every area. Spirit wellness is at the center of everything. If we are not connected to God’s heart it is not only possible but likely that every other area of our lives is off-centered. It is so imperative that we not get distracted by all the shiny things life has to offer and forsake our first priority which is our relationship with God. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge Him and he will direct your path.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) Such a familiar passage, but do we really consider what “in all thy ways” really means? We must constantly remind ourselves in the daily activities of our lives 30   April 2015 | Grace&Glory

to keep God at the center and to involve Him. We must pray about the connections we form, the places we go, the tasks that fill our day and more. Many times when we feel overwhelmed, stressed, confused, etc. we can trace it back to one decision made without talking to God first. “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, who you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) My dear sisters, as the fabulous She-EOs that we are, we must be intentional about our soul and body wellness. When we talk about our souls we are speaking of our will, intellect and emotions. Of course we know that our body is referring to our physical makeup. It is so important that we subject both to the power of God and His yielding. We must make sure that how we govern our hearts, attitudes, habits, words, emotions, physical health, and nutrition is in a manner that brings Glory to God. Every day our actions either bring God glory or discredit him. Are you honoring God with your body? Are you getting the proper rest, eating healthy, drinking water, guarding your heart, entertaining the proper thoughts, speaking loving and edifying words? Ladies we cannot lead others if we do not first lead ourselves. Often times we are quick to focus on the spiritual but it is much harder to master the person you see in the mirror. Some of our challenges cannot simply be prayed away; they will take work and intention to learn new information and create new habits. But if we are serious about being the She-EOs that God has called us to be we must put in the work. Business wellness may entail many things. This is not only for entrepreneurs. But this also includes having our daily affairs in order. We serve an excellent God and we must represent Him as such. As His children it is important to operate in integrity and have our affairs in order. It is easy to operate this way when we have taken the time to master Spirit, Soul, and Body wellness. For more information on tips for living the Godly She-EO life please visit my website. Next month ladies we will resume our discussion on “Virtuous Woman Principles” and continue to strive to be the women that God has created us to Tiffany Bethea be. Until next month, Author | Speaker | Mompreneur continue to She-EO Founder & CEO/ The L.I.V.E. Circle your lives ladies and www.tiffanybethea follow His lead.

single life

Dr. Monique Flemings

Monique Flemings Ministries, Chicago, Illinois

When you are in the waiting season of your single journey, the desire to give up sometimes becomes a strong reality. There is the silent code that as a believer that any hint of “giving up” is a sign of weakness in our Christian character. There are some days, as a Christian single that you may feel the urge to get back in bed and pull the covers over your head. There are so many challenges that one may face on a daily basis and the possibility of being overwhelmed with maintaining a Holy single life is real. The questions continue to swarm around as a backdrop to your daily routine . . . “Will I ever get married?” “Will I meet that special one that God has prepared for me?” In a world that says live your life as it pleases you and do what you want, when you want and how you want….it appears that holiness is a thing of the past. Is anyone trying anymore or is that holiness stuff just an old fashion thing of the past? During this Holy season of reflecting on the purpose of the cross, lets’ reflect on how we as singles can apply the power of the cross in our daily journey. Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserable life—no longer at sin’s every beck and call! What we believe is this: If we get included in Christ’s sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection. We know that when Jesus was raised from the dead it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end. Never again will death have the last word. When Jesus died, he took sin down with him, but alive he brings God down to us. From now on, think of it this way: Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you; God speaks your mother tongue, and you hang on every word. You are dead to sin and alive to God. That’s what Jesus did. Romans 6:6-11 (Message) Point #1 -What’s exciting to know is that our old life was nailed to the cross and that life does not exist anymore. We are new creatures in Christ. You can also apply this to your “old relationships”; they are nailed to the cross! That’s a good thing to know that you don’t have to carry the weight, pain, embarrassment, and shame of that old relationship into your future. That old relationship, its memories and emotions associated with it, is nailed to the cross!! Because of the cross, we can now hold our heads up high. Because of the cross we can look at that person from our past with no emotional attachment, resentment or pain. Point #2- When Jesus rose from the dead, he connected us in a powerful relationship with our Father God. He opened up a 24/7 line of communication to our heavenly Father. This open access is precious for us to have a direct connection to the plans of God for our lives and 32   April 2015 | Grace&Glory

the ability to access Him whenever we want. As a single Christian, we are never alone since our Daddy is truly with us. Sometimes we forget that He is a very present help and we go through our entire day without acknowledging Him or recognizing His goodness to us. We move through our day and only call Him in emergency situations. How would you like it if your friend only called you when it was a 911 situation asking for assistance, pleading for guidance, crying for mercy and then you never hear from them again….until the next crisis? Let’s try not to call on Daddy only in a crisis but recognize Him every day, throughout the day. When you begin to do this, you are accessing your Father in a relational manner. He desires to have a relationship with you. As you continue you will see how this is preparing you for marriage and teaching you how to be relational. Point #3- Lastly, sin has no place in your life and does not speak your language. Think of it this way, we have all encountered a time when we were trying to communicate with someone that spoke a different language than our language. We can recall the frustration on our end and the frustration of the person attempting to communicate with us. The conversation was short and lacking connection and understanding. Sin is like that person that speaks a different language trying to communicate with us. We know they are talking but we are unable to comprehend due to the language barrier. Sin has a barrier and it’s unable to speak our language. As a single, sin has no power to call your name. It speaks a different language. Sin cannot play with your thoughts… it speaks a different language. Sin cannot penetrate your heart, it speaks a different language. When you remember that sin has no power over you, as a single Christian you can begin to live victoriously. Apply the power of the cross in your daily life and watch God expand you as you prepare for marriage.

to your good health

Carla J. Debnam, MS, LCPC Founder, Renaissance Christian Counseling Center

We all have areas in our lives that need to be recharged, revamped and reassessed. Spring always presents itself as the ideal time to think about discarding the old, refreshing what you want to keep and embracing new ideas and opportunities. The extra hours of daylight, the blooming flowers, and the bustling activity all around us stimulate our minds and bodies to get moving. This is the prime time to get our spiritual, physical and mental houses in order. In the winter we tend to put off the goals and changes we know are best for us. You would exercise but it’s too cold. You would eat better but your favorite foods are too tempting to resist. You would read through the Bible but you have too much homework to do. Sometimes we make excuses for not accomplishing our goals instead of making plans to get them done. Instead of making excuses we need to spring ahead. Exploring new horizons and reimagining ourselves is great but most of us do not want to lose what we have already gained. In fact we want to increase our effectiveness and impact. Pressing on in spite of the odds is what springing ahead is all about. It is being resilient and bouncing back in the midst of struggles. Springing ahead is about maximizing the gifts and talents God has given you. We have to seize every opportunity 34   34   April April2015 2015| |Grace&Glory Grace&Glory

to move forward with the plans and promises God has already said are ours. In Philippians 3:13-14, we are given the formula for springing forward, “Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” When we press past our past, our hurts and our hang-ups, we can begin to make changes that move us toward our purpose and give us the push we need to precede with our newfound visions and dreams. The challenge we all have is that our past can hold us down and keep us stuck in our ways and in habits that do not help us as we strive to be a new creature in Christ. Springing ahead and taking advantage of our moments of inspiration will benefit our short term and long-term goals. Philippians 3:16 encourages us to build upon our actions and not lose ground, “But we must hold on to the progress we have already made.” Take advantage of the extra daylight, the warmer weather, the renewed spirit and the fresh outlook. Using the spring season to jump-start or continue working towards your vision means the year can end with a sense of fulfillment. Don’t become complacent but spring ahead to your destiny.

April is sexual assault awareness month and although sexual assault is very prevalent in today’s society, it is not commonly addressed. Every day the news is packed with stories about someone being assaulted; in their home, in school, and yes, even in church. I am a survivor of sexual abuse. I was abused in the two places that I was supposed to feel safe, at home and in church. I felt like all of the people who were supposed to protect me let me down. I blamed everyone; my family, my pastor, even God. Not only was I a devoted Christian, I was a youth minister. I couldn’t believe that God would allow something like that to happen to me. I didn’t want to have anything to do with church. I felt like He turned His back on me, so I turned my back on Him. After many years of self-destruction, denying God and trying to run away from Him, I hit rock bottom and had no choice but to cry out to Him. There were a few things I learned and I want to share them with you. 1. God is perfect, people are not. No matter how hard they try, people will make mistakes. It’s human nature. Even if a person truly loves God and strives to live life according to His word, they will mess up from time to time. God gives us all free will, a choice. Sometimes we choose to mess up, other times it is really a mistake. Now I know that sexual abuse is a huge offense, and I am definitely not trying to downplay the acts or its effects. However, you do not know what the abuser has been through. He/She may have been abused themselves. That may be all that they know. Trying to see things from their perspective may seem impossible, but it is a part of your healing. It will lead to forgiveness which is essential when trying to heal. 2. False prophets are real. In every occupation there are people who went into the field for the right reasons, and people who did not. It’s the same with people in church. There are some who really have a connection to God and a heart for His people and there are others who only want the title and the perks. The Bible warns us about

such people in Matthew 7:15 (NIV), “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.” God knew that some people were not going to be genuine and He loved us enough to not only warn us but to also give us the tools to identify them. We can identify them by their works, their actions. The Bible uses the illustration of a tree bearing fruit. A bad tree cannot produce healthy fruit. A person can pretend to have good intentions, but after a while their real character will be revealed. 3. Just because it was a negative act does not mean that it was meant to destroy you. I know this sounds crazy. It was abuse. Of course it was designed to destroy you, right? Wrong. Let’s look at the story of Job. Job was a good man who suffered a series of unfortunate events. He suffered the worst of the worst. He lost his wealth, his health was affected, his children died, and he was ridiculed. One would think that perhaps all of that occurred as a punishment for something, but that’s not the case. The Bible says that Job was, “Blameless- a man of integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil.” Job 1:1b (NLT) Job would have never gone through any of that if God didn’t give Satan permission to test him. So why would God allow such a thing? Unfortunately, we will never know why some things happen. Some things God shares with us, some He does not. But everything happens for a reason. I believe in Job’s case, God wanted to test his character, not because He didn’t believe Job was a good man, but to show others how to trust God. We may never understand why God does what He does or allows certain things to happen. One thing we can be sure of is that it’s all for a purpose and it will work out in the end. Romans 8:28 (KJV) tells us that, “All things work together for good to them that love God.” If you were abused, it may be hard for you to believe that God loves you but it’s true. You were created for a purpose and you owe it to yourself to get the help you need to overcome your abuse and live the life that God designed you to live.

www.rainn.org Parents are surrounded by messages about child sexual abuse. Talk shows and TV news warn parents about dangers at school, in the home and on the Internet. Despite all the media coverage, parents don’t get much advice about how to talk to their children about sexual abuse and how to prevent it. Talk to your children about sexuality and sexual abuse in ageappropriate terms. • Talking openly and directly about sexuality teaches children that it is okay to talk to you when they have questions. • Teach children the names of their body parts so that they have the language to ask questions and express concerns about those body parts. • Teach children that some parts of their body are private. • Let children know that other people should not be touching or looking at their private parts unless they need to touch them to provide care. If someone does need to touch them in those private areas, a parent or trusted caregiver should be there, too. • Tell children that if someone tries to touch those private areas or wants to look at them, OR if someone tries to show the child their own private parts, they should tell a trusted adult as soon as possible. • All children should be told that it’s okay to say “no” to touches that make them uncomfortable or if someone is touching them in ways that make them uncomfortable and that they should tell a trusted adult as soon as possible. • This can lead to some slightly embarrassing situations, such as a child who then says they don’t want to give a relative a hug or kiss! Work with your child to find ways to greet people that don’t involve uncomfortable kinds of touch. • Talking openly about sexuality and sexual abuse also teaches children that these things don’t need to be “secret.” Abusers will sometimes tell a child that the abuse is a secret. Let your children know that if someone is touching them or talking to them in ways that make them uncomfortable that it shouldn’t stay a secret. 37   April 2015 | Grace&Glory

• Make sure to tell your child that that they will not get into trouble if they tell you this kind of secret. • Don’t try to put all this information into one big “talk” about sex. • Talking about sexuality and sexual abuse should be routine conversations. Be involved in your child’s life. • Be interested in your child’s activities. • Ask your child about the people they go to school with or play with. • If your child is involved in sports, go to games and practices. Get to know the other parents and coaches. • If your child is involved in afterschool activities or daycare, ask them what they did during the day. • Talk about the media. • If your child watches a lot of television or plays video games, watch or play with them. • Use examples from TV or games that you have watched or played together to start up conversations about sexuality and sexual abuse. • Know the other adults that your child might talk to. • Children sometimes feel that they cannot talk to their parents. • Know the other trusted adults in your child’s life. Be available. • Make time to spend with your child. • Let your child know that they can come to you if they have questions or if someone is talking to them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable. • Be sure to follow up on this! If your child comes to you with concerns or questions, make time to talk to them. When you empower your child to say “no” to unwanted touch and teach them that they can come to you with questions and concerns, you take critical steps to preventing child sexual abuse. Book Shelf The Six Hats By Rich Kirkpatrick With everything that we (individuals) have going on every day, we don't always have time to read long novels, theological dissertations, or lengthy biographies. Sometimes we just want to read something short, easy to digest, and with good content. That's why this month's top pick is Rich Kirkpatrick's The Six Hats. The Six Hats (The Six Hats of the Worship Leader) is a dynamic book that outlines the different roles that a worship leader holds. In it he emphasizes the investment that has to be made on people; the people that you lead departmentally and those you lead in worship. Rich Kirkpatrick also shares the highlights of what is seen on stage and what is not seen behind the scenes that produces what is seen on stage; the side that few get a chance to experience. With just four short chapters the reader will walk away feeling like they have gained a world of knowledge in a short amount of time. Rich Kirkpatrick begins this book with 38   April 2015 | Grace&Glory

his story. With over 20 years of experience in the 'creative' world in churches ranging from start up to mega churches, he openly shares what he has learned with the reader. He gives practical advice and encouragement. The Six Hats is a great resource and guide to growing a department. The principles that he shares can be taken and applied to anyone in leadership both in the church and outside of the church.

What I enjoyed the most about this book is that it helped me to understand my 'creative' husband more; what he deals with outside of our home as he wears his many hats. I would suggest The Six Hats to every pastor, supporting church staff, and family member of a worship leader. It gives insight into the mind of the worship leader and will help the organization and family to grow in understanding and support of those in the worship leadership position. One of the most powerful lines in the entire book says, "Any worship leader worth his or her salt does not do this alone."

LIVING WITH LOW BACK PAIN 11 Ways to Avoid Back Pain If you’ve been sidelined by a sore back, you’re not alone. Four out of five people experience back pain at some point, making it the fifth most common reason for visiting the doctor. Back pain takes various forms, from a persistent dull ache to sudden sharp pain, and has many causes. Sometimes it results from a sprain, fracture, or other accidental injury. It can stem from a disease or medical condition, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal 1. Get more exercise. If your back is hurting, you may think the best way to get relief is to limit exercise and to rest. A day or two of rest may help, but more than that may not help the pain. Experts now know that regular physical activity can help ease inflammation and muscle tension. 2. Watch your weight. Extra pounds, especially in your midsection, can make back pain worse by shifting your center of gravity and putting strain on your lower back. Staying within 10 pounds of your ideal weight may help control back pain. 3. If you smoke, stop. Smoking restricts the flow of nutrient-containing blood to spinal discs, so smokers are especially vulnerable to back pain. 4. Sleeping position. If you’re prone to back pain, talk with your doctor about the best sleeping position. Sleeping on your side with your knees pulled up slightly toward your chest is sometimes suggested. Prefer to sleep on your back? Put one pillow under your knees and another under your lower back. Sleeping on your stomach can be especially hard on your back. If you can’t sleep any other way, place a pillow under your hips. 5. Pay attention to your posture. The best chair for preventing back pain is one with a straight back or low-back support. Keep your knees a bit higher than your hips while seated. Prop your feet on a stool if you need to. If you must stand for a prolonged period, keep your head up and your stomach pulled in. If possible, rest one foot on a stool -- and switch feet every five to 15 minutes. 6. Be careful how you lift. Don’t bend over from the waist to lift heavy objects. Bend your knees and squat, pulling in your stomach muscles and holding the object close to your body as you stand up. Don't twist your body while lifting. If you can, push rather than pull heavy objects. Pushing is easier on the back. 7. Avoid high heels. They can shift your center of gravity and strain your lower back. Stick to a oneinch heel. If you have to go higher, bring along a pair of low-heeled shoes and slip into them if you become uncomfortable. 8. Stash the skinny jeans. Clothing so tight that it interferes with bending, sitting, or walking can 40   40   April April2015 2015||Grace&Glory Grace&Glory

www.webmd.com canal through which the spinal cord runs). Many people develop back pain in part because they’re overweight or sedentary. The good news is that most lower back pain usually gets better within a few days or weeks, and surgery is rarely necessary. What’s more, simple selfhelp strategies such as these can be surprisingly effective at preventing back pain and keeping it from returning:

aggravate back pain. 9. Lighten your wallet. Sitting on an overstuffed wallet may cause discomfort and back pain. If you’re going to be sitting for a prolonged period -- while driving, for example, take your wallet out of your back pocket. 10. Pick the right handbag or briefcase. Buy a bag or briefcase with a wide, adjustable strap that’s long enough to reach over your head. A messenger bag is made to wear this way. Having the strap on the opposite shoulder of the bag distributes the weight more evenly and helps keep your shoulders even and your back pain-free. When carrying a heavy bag or case without straps, switch hands frequently to avoid putting all the stress on one side of the body. To lighten the load, periodically purge bags, cases, backpacks, and other carriers of things you don't need. 11. Forget about back braces. Various back supports are available, from elastic bands to special corsets. They can be helpful after certain kinds of surgery, but there is not much evidence that they help treat chronic back pain. Practical Tips for Back Pain Reliefwww.spine-health.com Ice is a Very Effective Pain Reliever Even with all the high tech medical options available, a simple ice application can still be one of the more effective, proven methods to treat a sore back or neck. Ice is typically most effective if it is applied soon after an injury occurs, or after any activity that causes pain or stiffness. Ice can also be very helpful in alleviating postoperative pain and discomfort. While any form of applying cold to the injured area - such as a bag of ice wrapped in a towel or a commercial ice pack - should be helpful, combining massage therapy with ice application is a nice alternative for pain relief. Heat Therapy is Good Too While the overall qualities of warmth and heat have long been associated with comfort and relaxation, heat therapy goes a step further and can provide both pain relief and healing benefits for many types of lower back pain.. In addition, heat therapy - such as

heating pads, heat wraps, hot baths, warm gel packs, etc. - is both inexpensive and easy to do. Some patients find more pain relief with heat (either moist heat or dry heat) and others with ice. The two therapies may also be alternated. Hamstring Stretching Exercises Can Help If you have tight hamstring muscles (the large muscles in the back of your thighs), the motion in your pelvis may be limited, which can increase stress across your lower back. To decrease this stress it is a good idea to incorporate hamstring stretching exercises into your daily routine. Hamstring stretching should typically include applying even pressure to lengthen the hamstring muscle for 30 to 45 seconds at a time, one to two times each day. There are a number of different ways to stretch your hamstrings, and if you have a back condition you may want to check with your doctor or physical therapist to discuss which position will work best for you. Some Therapies Actually Feel Good! While it sometimes may not seem like it, there are a number of soothing, rewarding therapies available to treat back pain. Here are two options to consider: Massage therapy is a proven method for alleviating lower back pain, and can also improve sleep and lessen anxiety and depression (which sometimes accompany pain). Some insurance plans will cover massage therapy. Another treatment option is water therapy. In addition to the physical therapy benefits, water therapy has the added benefits of relaxation and sensory alterations due to water temperature and hydrostatic pressure. It also reduces pressure on the joints of the spine and allows for further range of motion.

man talk

A complete and accurate understanding of the Word of God is invaluable. One of the best ways to develop such an understanding is to seek the parallel connections between the Old and New Testaments. As the Gospels written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are not islands unto themselves, in the same manner, the Old and New Testaments are complementary. As we pause to remember the sacrifice of Good Friday, which was a necessary precursor to the victory of Resurrection Sunday, let’s look closer at Isaiah chapter 53. The 12 verses of Isaiah Chapter 53 are, no doubt, centered on the person and event that stand as the fundamentals of our faith: Jesus Christ and the Crucifixion. Lest we become desensitized to the anguish experienced by Christ on the cross at the expense of artistic renderings of this pivotal moment in history, Isaiah provides several vivid illustrations. In verse 3 he reminds us of his emotional burden: He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief... To remind us of the physical pain he endured, these words are recorded in verse 4: Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Verse 5 is arguably the most familiar of the passage: But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. As an appropriate summation, the chapter ends with these words: ...he hath poured out his soul unto death... and he bare the sin of many... But as we remember all that Christ endured upon the cross, we should also consider these two questions: Why would the savior subject himself to such pain? And, what held him to the cross? Brothers, it wasn’t the nails that held Jesus to the cross. Although Isaiah wrote in the Old Testament about the Suffering Servant, the revelatory insight about why he remained hanging upon the tree is found in the Gospels as they recount what is commonly referred to as the Seven Last Words or Cries From The Cross. Quickly, let’s consider the first three… “FATHER, FORGIVE THEM, FOR THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY DO.” (LUKE 23:34) Even while hanging on the cross and enduring excruciating pain, Jesus wasn’t too busy to extend grace and mercy to those by whose hands he was being terribly mistreated. “ASSUREDLY, I SAY TO YOU, TODAY YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.” (LUKE 23:43) These words were spoken by Jesus to one of the guilty criminals who 46   April 2015 | Grace&Glory 46

hung on the cross next to him. While one of the thieves mocked Jesus along with the crowd, the other’s heart had been changed. Despite life slowly leaving his body, Jesus wasn’t too pre-occupied to offer the gift of salvation. Parenthetically, his attention to the thief shows that it is never too late to accept the gift of salvation. In his final hour, the savior’s arms remained outstretched to welcome all who would believe and receive. “WOMAN, BEHOLD YOUR SON… SON, BEHOLD YOUR MOTHER.” (JOHN 19:26-27) Another illustration of why Christ remained on the cross can be understood through the humanistic perspective. Said another way, although he was 100 percent God, at the same time he was 100 percent man. And because of his humanity, Christ was concerned with the feelings of those he loved: specifically, his mother and beloved disciple, John. Jesus, though near to death, wasn’t too busy to offer consolation and comfort to his mother and friend. What, then, is the connection shared between the Old Testament prophetic words of Isaiah and the New Testament Gospel accounts of Jesus’ words on the cross? For all the pain, suffering, agony, and shame recorded by Isaiah, the Gospels let us know that we were on his mind. He was beaten so that ultimately we could have access to not only physical healing, but more importantly to the ultimate spiritual healing that is found in freedom from the bondage of sin (see I Peter 2:24). Just like those at Calvary who did not recognize the gravity of their sin, often times neither do we. But the savior was still forgiving and still saving—even until his very last moments. And as the quintessential son and faithful friend, some of Christ’s final thoughts were centered on the well-being of Mary and John. Always loving and always giving, he was never consumed by his own pain. So, although we anticipate a glorious celebration of victory on Resurrection Sunday, don’t forget to remember the ultimate sacrifice of Good Friday when 2000 years ago, and still today, you and I were on his mind.
