My beloved friends, let us continue to love each other since love comes from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and experiences a relationship with God. The person who refuses to love doesn’t know the first thing about God, because God is love – so you can’t know him if you don’t love. This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about – not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God. 11-12 My dear, dear friends, if God loved us like this, we certainly ought to love each other. No one has seen God, ever. But if we love one another, God dwells deeply within us, and his love becomes complete in us – perfect love! 13-16 This is how we know we’re living steadily and deeply in him, and he in us: He’s given us life from his life, from his very own Spirit. Also, we’ve seen for ourselves and continue to state openly that the Father sent his Son as Savior of the world. Everyone who confesses that Jesus is God’s Son participates continuously in an intimate relationship with God. We know it so well, we’ve embraced it heart and soul, this love that comes from God. 7-10

TO LOVE, TO BE LOVED

God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us, so that we’re free of worry on Judgment Day – our standing in the world is identical with Christ’s. There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life – fear of death, fear of judgment – is one not yet fully formed in love. 19 We, though, are going to love – love and be loved. First we were loved, now we love. He loved us first. 20-21 If anyone boasts, “I love God,” and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won’t love the person he can see, how can he love the God he can’t see? The command we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes loving people. You’ve got to love both. 17-18

INTERVIEW WITH

Bishop Designate Jammie Pendleton Renewed Hope Church Linthicum, MD

G&G: Bishop Pendleton, welcome to Grace & Glory Magazine! We are delighted to have you join the Grace & Glory family and we are excited to introduce you to our readers. First and foremost, congratulations are in order for you being selected as a Bishop Designate. Bishop Pendleton: Thank you for having us as a part of the Grace and Glory family. It is an exciting time and we are looking forward

to everything God is going to do in this new connection. G&G: Bishop Pendleton let’s start with a few questions to get to know the both of you better, first how would you describe yourself in three words and would you share with us one thing most people would be surprised to know about you? Bishop Pendleton: If I were to describe myself in three words it would be Gentle, Charismatic and Kind. One thing that most people would never know about me is that I am a Chef. G&G: Bishop Pendleton, most pastors have shared with me that ‘preaching the gospel’ was not necessarily what they had planned to do with their lives. Was it the same for you, did you have other plans for your life, or has it always been your desire to preach the gospel? Bishop Pendleton: I have known I was going to become a preacher my whole life. I wrote my 1st sermon when I was 11 years old. I even remember the scripture I used; it was Hebrews 11:1. My sermon title was “Where is Your Faith”. Ever since then I knew I would become a preacher. Growing up at Mount Zion Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of the Late Rev. Dr. Clarence E. Poole he gave me the nick name ‘little preacher’ and every time I walked by his office on my way into the sanctuary or when I got up to do something during a Sunday

of the challenges that come with having a blended family. We decided to start focusing on how to help blended families with practical ways of dealing with the many challenges that they face daily.

G&G: Bishop Pendleton what is your ministry focused on? G&G: Bishop Pendleton, what are some of the Bishop Pendleton: Renewed challenges that your family Hope is a church for deals with as you are being a everyone. When the Lord Bishop Designate and having gave me the name for the a blended family? ministry, he spoke to me and Bishop Pendleton: That's said that the people don’t a great question, balancing need a new hope, they need time is always a challenge. I the hope that they once had work really hard at making to be renewed. That is one of sure that I am spending time the things we focus on, the with my wife and children. W hen we are together I am how your ministry helps blended families? maximizing every moment with them. Bishop Pendleton: There are so many blended families in the body of Christ. Our Lord and Savior G&G: Bishop Pendleton, what do you think will help is a part of a blended family and we miss so many opportunities to minister to this demographic. It wasn’t the church in 2020? Bishop Pendleton: One thing I think that will help until my wife and I got together that I realized how the church in 2020 is teaching people how to forgive. common blended families are and was made aware There are a lot of people in our local churches that are holding on to unforgiveness in their heart from someone who hurt them, or from them not forgiving themselves. We need practical approaches that will help people work through the process of forgiveness so that it is not only coming to church and laying it on the alter, but going to talk to a certified counselor about what hurt you and having a plan to get you back to wholeness. G&G: Bishop Pendleton, what is the difference between the role of a Pastor and the role of a Bishop? Continued to page 10 Continued on page 10 www.gracenglorymagazine.org  9

Q&A Continued from page 9

Continued from page 9

Bishop Pendleton: The role of the Pastor is for the local church that they Sheppard, and the role of the Bishop is for the general body of Christ. As a Bishop you lead pastors and undergird them and their local Churches. G&G: Bishop Pendleton, how are Bishops chosen, and how are their specific duties determined particularly as it relates to your elevation? Will there be specific duties assigned to you? Bishop Pendleton: A Bishop can be elected by a group of pastors who make the decision that they want this person to lead them, or you can be Designated to the office of Bishop to operate within a fellowship. I currently serve as the general secretary of Covenant Churches of America under the leadership of Bishop Marvin Denson. G&G: Bishop Pendleton, what does this elevation mean to you personally and to your family? What will be the most notable change in your life? Bishop Pendleton: My elevation personally means more accountability and responsibility. It makes me want to be a better man, Husband, Father and Pastor. I don’t take this title lightly but with reverence 10   February February2020 2020| |Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 10

and respect. My family is excited about my elevation and they made me promise that I will never be too busy for them. The most notable change in my life is that I constantly want to make sure that every day that I live I do something to glorify God. G&G: Bishop Pendleton, how will this elevation as Bishop affect the Renewed Hope Church? Will there be any significant changes as it relates to your role as pastor of Renewed Hope Church? Bishop Pendleton: The way this elevation effects Renewed Hope is that they have to share their Pastor with more churches now. When I would always be at everything at Renewed Hope there will be times that I won’t be there but have set things in place for times such as that. One change that was put in place was that we installed my beautiful wife Elder Kenise Pendleton as Pastor of worship. This ensures that the church will always be covered while I am away. G&G: Bishop Pendleton, lastly as a Bishop designate, what do you think should be the church’s focus in today’s society? What should the church be saying and doing right now? Bishop Pendleton: The church should be focusing on speaking truth to power standing against injustice and oppression of all people. We are living in a time where our country is becoming more and more divided and it’s the churches job to have a place that speaks for the marginalized community.

Deacon Mrs. Elizabeth H. Adams A Local ‘Shero’ Celebrating Her

Mrs. Elizabeth H. Adams 100th Birthday, Feb. 15th, 2020

As a child

Written by: Pastor Harold A. Carter, Jr. Assisted by Rev. Daniel N. Carter The privilege to put “pen to paper” and share words about an incredible servant of God, namely, Mrs. Elizabeth H. Adams, goes beyond words, as I feel inadequate and unworthy when compared with her beautiful and outstanding life, as she celebrates her 100th birthday. However, it is incumbent that something be scribed in the spirit of this being Black History Month as well as this month’s emphasis on love. The accomplishments, influence, acumen, servanthood and leadership, among other virtues, continue to mark her witness in the kingdom of God. Elizabeth is a native of Baltimore. Her father, Rev. Paul J. Harris, was a Baptist minister. Her mother, Lena I. Caulk Harris, was a descendant of the well-known Young Family, of our city. Elizabeth is a graduate of Frederick Douglass High School of which she would later, in life, become Principal. She graduated with honors from Coppin Normal School (Coppin State University) earning a certificate in Elementary Education. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Morgan State University and a Master of Education degree from Towson State Deacon Adams preparing to enter worship with deacons University. In fact, Elizabeth would continue graduate studies at New York University and the University of Maryland. For thirty-four years, this educated and well-trained woman worked in the Baltimore Public Schools as an elementary classroom teacher of Music, as a Junior High School teacher of Social Studies and a Senior High School teacher of History. Amazing, right? But that’s not all. She became an administrative assistant at Rock Glen School and moved to the position of Vice-Principal and later became Principal. She went on to be Principal of Clifton Park Junior High School and ultimately retired having served as Principal of the aforementioned Frederick Douglass High School. Having been raised in a religious home, she participated in church activities from her youth, forward. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Youth Choir director, Junior Choir director and for a period of time she served as church organist. In essence, she supported the ministry of her father serving faithfully for nineteen of the twenty-two years that he pastored at Brown’s Memorial Baptist Church. to your good health

IN SPITE OF

There are some events, activities and actions that are optional in life. These are events, activities or actions that may be a good idea but at the end of the day they are not necessary. Extended warranties, attendance at high school reunions, office parties, church banquets, family gatherings and more can be counted among these. These may be expectations placed on us by others, our families, friends and employers, yet can be avoided if we are reluctant to participate. Matters of the heart are not included in this category. When it comes to dealing with others emotionally and spiritually there is a non-negotiable, and that is when it comes to love. We are to, “Owe nothing to anyone— except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.” Romans 13:8. How do we accomplish such a daunting assignment? What does it take for us to love others in spite of their mistreatment of us or their dislike of us or even if their actions have been unloving, unwelcoming and even unholy. We are to love them “in spite of”. No matter what the actions of others may be, love is always the right response. Jesus challenges us in this area. He says, “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” Luke 6:27-28. As we can see, love is radical especially the kind of love Jesus is talking about. Loving others does not

require you to put yourself in harms way. Abuse of any kind is not acceptable and is one of the areas where loving and relating to someone from a distance is best. We may have a friend that has an addiction that clouds their judgment, or a parent that is verbally abusive or a coworker that has an anger problem. We can love them in spite of their behavior yet set boundaries when interacting with them. Love is not an option but is expected especially for Christian disciples. We cannot spread the Gospel and hate others. We must walk in the Fruit of The Spirit by demonstrating love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Loving others “in spite of” is an act of faith that requires us to be full of grace and mercy. These attributes can only be manifested through our relationship with God. We can live, love and learn from the experiences that come our way. Loving others like we love God and ourselves can feel strange and is countercultural but it can be done when we rely on the strength of our faith and Dr. Carla Debnam, Founder, remember the love we have received, in spite Renaissance Christian Counseling Center of our faults and failures.

I want you to imagine me looking at you face to face, eye ball to eye ball and saying to you in my most authoritative voice, “STAY MOTIVATED!" Sometimes people think motivation is only needed when you hear bad news, or something happens that knocks you off course. Oh no! You can be experiencing increase, open doors and good news, but you still need motivation. You can become weary in well doing that is why we are encouraged not to. It is in your well doing that you are finding difficulty balancing work and life. It is in your well doing that you are not spending time to pour back into yourself. It is in your well doing that rest is being compromised, and sleep becomes a fantasy. This is why no matter what season you are in, motivation has to be a part of your lifestyle and not a lifeline. You have to daily glean on motivation. You have 16   February 2020 | Grace&Glory

to hear it, speak it and surround yourself by it. For that reason, as your #1 change agent, I am intentional in sending you motivational minutes, affirmations and media related material that will keep you motivated! Do you think that only those going through hard times and depression need motivation? No, the person who just received that promotion, the person who just signed a major contract deal, the person who just published their book needs motivation also. DO NOT GROW WEARY…..STAY MOTIVATED. Here is the question I have for you. What motivates you? Can I be completely transparent, I am motivated by rejection. There is something that rises up when I experience rejection that says, "We are not going out like that!" I began to educate myself, ask questions, set goals, pick up the phone and talk to someone. Simply put ladies and gentlemen, I TAKE AIM! When someone tells me no, I am not in return forcing them to change their minds, I am forcing myself to change my mind! What do I need to do differently in my life and or business? trinkets to triumph

Love is Love

Love is in the air! This is the season of sweet sentiments, kind gestures, mushy moments, and double the display of adoration and affection. Red roses, pink flowers, sweet sentiments and overall demonstrations of love are everywhere. The feeling of lots of love is magnified this month because of Valentine’s Day, the day set aside to show your love for the people you admire most. The stores are stocked with stuffed animals and everything red, white and pink signaling that the season of love is here. For the believer every day is Valentine’s Day because of the unconditional love you have for your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the unconditional love you have for your loved ones that is not predicated on a season or holiday. God is love (1 John 4:8) and if God is a part of your life this is a feeling you fill up on daily. It is a love that is L-loyal, O-one, V-victorious, E-eternal. Love is loyal. This type of loyalty is displayed through your adoration and devotion for your loved ones because of your faithfulness towards them. A loyal love is one that is full of trust and exudes confidence. True, loyal love establishes a bond that is unbreakable and able to weather any storm. A loyal love covers (1 Peter 4:8) and doesn’t compete, compare, or convict. Jesus demonstrated the epitome of a loyal love for you when He laid down His life for you, the one He calls His friend (John 15:13). His example makes it easy for you to show love that is loyal. Love is an oneness that is not negotiable. You experience pure bliss and the blessings you desire when you abide in God’s love for you (John 15:7-8). Basking in God’s love gives you a guarantee that you can conquer anything with a loved one by your side and on your team. You are able to bear all things, believe all things, and endure all things together (1 Corinthians 13:7). Love is victorious. You are never the victim in love but the victor. You cannot lose if you do everything in love. The demonstration of your adoration always wins in every situation. True love is triumphant in trials, tests, and tops any other force or feeling. Love wins every time. Love is eternal and lasts forever. The love you experience with someone can last forever and it can fade away. The true lover of your soul, Jesus Christ, offers you a love that will last a lifetime. Jesus promises to be with you always so you never have to worry that you lack love (Matthew 28:20). For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). Everyone’s love season is different. You could be recovering from a love that was lost, in the midst of a magnificent relationship, or you could be in a season of hoping and praying that love finds you. No matter the season that you find yourself in, you can always rest assured that if no one else loves you, God loves you. God love is loyal. He wants to be one with you. He will give you the victory in every situation and circumstance you encounter. His love for you lasts a lifetime and will never fade away. Love is easy in God because He first loved you (1 John 4:19). Knowing that God loves you helps you to love yourself and to demonstrate it daily to others (John 13:34). You can celebrate love with acts of kindness, concern, and care without looking for anything in return. That is usually when you are in the proper and perfect position to receive a double portion of the love you give. You can have faith, hope, and love but know that love is the greatest of them all (1 Corinthians 13:13). Your loyalty, oneness, victory, and eternity are the key to Tracey Nicole George L.O.V.E. www.traceystrinketstotriumph.com

CHARLES & URSULA HARRIS,

We are celebrating the first love month of a new decade and this is such an exciting time right now! In January, so many people are starting off the year on fire for a monumental change in their lives. Since February is considered to be the love month, I believe this is a great place and time to look at love from the inside out. Many times, we sacrifice energy and good health by helping other people, which will eventually drain us in negative ways. Fitness and love are closely related because when you really love yourself, you will make your health a priority. Having a good heart not only emotionally, but physically is essential to living a productive life. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. (Proverbs 4:23 NLT) Once we focus on building a strong healthy heart first, everything else will fall into place. My expertise is in the health and fitness arena so I will deal with ways to strengthen your heart and body physically.

LOVE YOURSELF FIRST!

Obtaining a strong and healthy heart is not as hard as you may think! With a few lifestyles changes, this process can be implanted in simple ways. Making gradual changes every day will reap long term benefits over time. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. (1Corinthians 13:4 NIV) Let’s look at 7 powerful ways you can strengthen your heart immediately! 1. Be Active. Your heart is a muscle, and as with any muscle, 24   February 2020 | Grace&Glory

exercise what strengthens it. Doing cardiovascular exercises such as power walking 3-5 times per week is a good place to start your fitness routine. 2. Quit Smoking. To quit smoking can be a tough task, but don’t be too hard on yourself. Find the resources to help assist you through the process to preserve a healthy heart. 3. Lose Weight. Excess weight is definitely stress on the heart and body. Losing weight through exercise will help you to maintain and build a strong healthy heart for life. 4. Eat Heart-Healthy Foods. At all cost, avoid fried and processed foods. Lean more toward baked and grilled poultry and fish. Leafy green vegetables are great food choices to keep your heart healthy. 5. Eliminate Stress. The joy of the Lord is your strength. (Nehemiah 8:10) Don’t allow people and things to get the best of you this year. I have personally decided to not sweat the small stuff. Everything always seems to work itself out. Ninety percent of the things we worry about never happen. Find things that make you happy and enjoy where you are in life. 6. Meditate Often. Some people may believe that mediating is lighting candles, burning incense, crossing your legs and humming. Although there is nothing wrong with that, meditation is about taking time to yourself to quiet your mind and escape the hustle and bustle of life. 7. Prayer Time. Prayer is, as we know, number one in everything we do! If you are experiencing any health challenges or are having difficulties with starting a fitness program ask for help. You ask for something but do not get it because you ask for it for the wrong reason-for your own pleasure. (James 4:3 ISV) Ask God to help you with your health. We serve a God that is concerned about our mind, body and spirit. Make this the year that you focus on your heart, spiritually and physically. Take inventory on a weekly basis to ensure that you are doing the things to keep yourself happy and healthy. Remember the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10 NIV)

Women’s Heart Month

health matters

The month of February is celebrated as Women’s Heart Month. Red Dress Sunday and Go Red activities are a part of a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease. The Go Red initiative was started in 2002 to deliver an urgent wakeup call to American women. The initiative is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, which is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The campaign is designed to warn women of their risk for heart disease and related disorders. Heart disease is the #1 health threat to women over 40 years old. Encouraging women to wear red on specific days in the month of February is used as a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. Red Dress Sunday events are aimed to educate, motivate and activate women, and provide the tools needed to understand and minimize risks Unfortunately, signs and symptoms of heart disease in women often go unnoticed or undiscovered. Women often realize they are victims of cardiovascular disorders when various disease processes are advanced. Beginning manifestations of heart disease can be overlooked. The fact is, symptoms of heart disease can be vague and can be contributed to other health problems. For women over forty, feelings of being tired, weight gain and transient shortness of breath can be attributed to lack of exercise, lack of sleep and changes in hormone levels. Cardiovascular disease is linked to hypertension, congestive heart failure, aneurysms and arteriosclerosis. These factors can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney and liver failure, diabetes, blindness, limb amputations, and death. Women, especially African-American women and women of color are largely unaware of their risk of heart disease. • Only 55 percent of women realize heart disease is the No. 1 killer for American women. • Fewer than half of American women know what a healthy blood pressure or cholesterol level is. • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) isn’t just helpful when it comes to diets or losing weight – it’s also linked to your risk of heart disease. • It’s a myth that strokes, which affect the arteries linked to the brain, only happen to older people. Strokes can happen even in infants. • Women are also more likely to suffer from a stroke, contrary to popular myths. There are several risk factors for heart disease. Some can be controlled. Other risk factors cannot be controlled. Risk factors that you cannot control are called non-modifiable risk factors. Uncontrollable risk factors cannot be changed. They may be 26   February 2020 | Grace&Glory

present due to genetics or the environment. These risk factors include: • Gender (males are at greater risk) • Age (the older you get, the higher your risk) • A family history of heart disease • Being post-menopausal • Race-African-American, American-Indian heritage Modifiable risk factors require individuals to make changes in their lifestyle and habits. These changes can inhibit the development or low down the progression of heart disease. Modifiable risk factors include: • Smoking • High LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, and low HDL, or "good" cholesterol • Uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure) • Physical inactivity • Obesity • Uncontrolled diabetes • Uncontrolled stress and anger Socioeconomic status is a debatable risk factor for cardiovascular health. It can be considered a modifiable or a non-modifiable risk factor. Individuals of lower socioeconomic status are at a greater risk for heart disease for multiple and complex reasons. Poor diets and lack of access to healthrelated resources are considerable variables in cardiovascular health outcomes. Individuals from a higher socioeconomic background typically having greater access to a more nutritionally-balanced diet. Impoverished people often lack substantial health care benefits. What can women do to reduce their risk of heart disease? Make an effort to reduce the presence and effects of the modifiable risk factors. Target a risk factor each month and implement strategies that will improve your cardiovascular outcomes. Within a year, you can significantly reduce your Dr. Denyce Watties-Daniels risk of developing heart disease. Assistant Professor Get involved with the Red Dress College of Health Professions campaign. Wear red throughout the Coppin State University month of February to raise awareness DWatties-Daniels@coppin.edu healthytips 025@gmail.com of heart disease in women.
