Jackie Epps Editor-in-Chief
It is not surprising that the running theme for this month’s issue is newness. With every New Year it is everyone’s hope that all things will be new again. We look forward with so much hope and anticipation for the new; you know the saying, “Out with the old in with the new”. Better yet my favorite saying is, “The Best is yet to come.” This is a quote that never grows old, every time you say it; it reminds you that something new is always on its way. “Whatever with the past has gone, the best is always yet to come.” Lucy Larcom With the New Year there is a fresh new hope! The modern idea of hope is “to wish for, to expect, but without certainty of the fulfillment; to desire very much, but with no real assurance of getting your desire.” However in the word of God, hope is an indication of certainty. “Hope” in Scripture means “a strong and confident expectation.” For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. Romans 8:24-25
God is called “the God of Hope.” This means He is the source of all real hope. If we are going to have hope (confident expectation), it must come from Him for He alone has the power to give it. Hope gives us power to live courageously, to be all God has called us to be in Christ. In order to embrace all that is new for this brand New Year we have stepped into, we have to remain hopeful. “Always remember your present situation is not your final destination, the best is yet to come.” This New Year my prayer is that you will never lose your hope for the future; the hope that depends on the Word of God. We have a new hope every day of the year; it always depends on knowing God and resting in His grace. Believe me the best is still yet to come. Say it today . . . and say it to yourself often; it has a way of making all things feel new again. Happy New Year!

“My family and I wish all Marylanders a 2014 of good health and opportunity. Happy New Year!” – Governor Martin O’Malley State of Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley “In any reasonable society, one can attest that the overarching threat to its culture or way of life is one without order. As we prepare for 2014 and the hope of new possibilities, new dispensations in God, our refrain must be - this is “The Year of Excellence and God’s Divine Order!” The strategy is simple, the mandate is clear: Strive for greatness, pursue integrity and walking in God’s divine order.” Pastor Shawn Bell

“Happy NEW Year! Emphasis is on NEW! Not old, recently built or created but NEW! Every morning we are awakened to the fresh mercies of God! “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23) I am so thankful for the new mercies (compassions, forgiveness, and Dr. Karen S. Bethea kind treatment) of God that await us in 2014! No need to ponder the regrets of 2013 when you have been given NEW opportunities to begin again. What a wonderful life when Jesus is at the center! What a great daily experience of walking with the King and following the well thought out and intentionally laid path for our feet. How exciting each day is when we watch the will of God unfold in an obedient and yielded life. Blessings and success are no accident. They are the results of taking one day at a time and seeing the NEW mercies being extended to us. Mercy is so much more than just being forgiven from sin. NEW mercies manifest with favor, opportunities to let our light shine, and divine connections. Each day I locate God in that day! What is God doing today? How do I fit into His will today? The power of now cannot be overstated. I pray that you enjoy a NEW YEAR in every sense of the word and that the blessings of God overtake your life! Be richly blessed!” – Set The Captives Free Outreach CenterBaptist Church, Baltimore, MD “Happy New Year 2014- the year of breakthroughs in many areas of your life. “As we begin the New Year, it is my prayer that it becomes more than the turning of the calendar, but a time for us to REDEDICATE OURSELVES TO THE PLANS AND PURPOSES OF GOD. Last year, many of us found ourselves slipping away from some of the desires and requests that God has for our lives. The good news is that GOD is giving us a FRESH START, a time to begin with a clean slate and move Bishop Dwayne C. with the will of God for our lives. As we Debnam begin this New Year, let’s REDEDICATE OURSELVES TO GOD AND TO GOD’S WILL!!! My prayer is that this will be your year of GREAT HARVEST!!!”
“As we begin a new year it is important for all of us to take some time to reflect and rejoice over what we have survived and succeeded. The subtle strategy of the enemy is to make us think that what we have gone through was all in vain. But God has merely been preparing us for a greater victory than we could have imagined. Our church has claimed 2014 as our Dr. Donte’ L. year of “Living Possibilities”. We are Hickman growing from visualizing to actualizing the opportunities that God has made available to us. Remember that what you have come through is only evidence of where God is taking you.”

“In an age during which there’s an ever increasing movement to suppress, if not silence, the name of Jesus Christ; and, therefore any references to God, in the name of political correctness, inclusivity, and simply not wanting to offend, the Church is called to be more vigilant than ever before to affirm the utter necessity of God. Not only is there a movement of suppression, etc., but the Dr. Harold A. dilemma this generation faces is, also, Carter, Jr. not being able to realize a need for God due to so many “blessings,” like technology, materialism, and even education. Who needs God when we have so many other “helps?” And, so, 2014 calls us to find ways to deal with such a formidable challenge as we seek to sound the trumpet that, We STILL Need God!” – Dr. Harold A. Carter, Jr. (Pastor) New Shiloh Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “God is Great and Greatly to Be Praised! “WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENTthe Year of 2014 will be your time to dream again. The past few years have been difficult and hard, but it has prepared you for what is to come. Perhaps you have seen your life, vision and dreams shattered, but 2014 is your Year of New Beginnings. Remember not the former things, neither consider the things of old, for behold God will do a NEW THING IN YOUR LIFE. BE BLESSED!”
– Dr. Kenneth O. Robinson, Jr., (Pastor) Restoring Life International Church, Pikesville, MD “In his book, ‘Start’, author Jon Acuff asks, “What do you do when all the excuses you used to not chase your dream are gone?” The answer, of course, is to START. Many of us begin the New Year with dreams, goals, and ambitions, yet allow challenges, difficulties, and opposition, to become excuses to never get started. This is Dr. Lisa M. Weah because we fail to realize, that Godgiven dreams, always come with extraordinary challenges - for the enemy challenges us to hold us back, but God challenges us to build us up. So embrace the season to make a fresh START, knowing that the challenges of your last season have made you stronger, wiser, and better…And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12:1b-2a) – Dr. Lisa M. Weah (Pastor) New Bethlehem Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “The New Year is always an opportunity for a new beginning. How can we better present our Christ to the world? Better Choices, Better Results by Governor Martin O’Malley There is no progress without a job. As Maryland families and businesses have continued to weather the worst recession since the Great Depression, the O’Malley-Brown Administration has been guided by the North Star of creating jobs, expanding opportunity, and growing an increasingly diverse middle class. And we’re continuing to make gains for Maryland families. Since November 2012, our State has added 33,500 jobs— the vast majority of them added by our dynamic private sector. We’re growing jobs 88 percent faster than our neighbors in Virginia. In December, we visited Johns Hopkins Hospital System in Baltimore to announce more progress for moms and dads in our State. In the year ending September 30, a record 12,504 people left welfare and found employment. More than one-third of these jobs pay $10/hour or more, and many former welfare recipients are working in key industries such as health care, warehousing, along with educational and administrative support.
Governor O’Malley meets with newly-employed workers at Johns Hopkins Hospital Center in Baltimore.
In each of the last four years, we have grown the number of Temporary Cash Assistance job placements. By linking a record number of parents with jobs, we are helping more moms and dads in Maryland obtain the skills they need to compete and better provide for their families.
complete CFUF’s rigorous STRIVE employment training program, and enroll in a five-month training internship onsite at Johns Hopkins Hospital System. Since the partnership began last year, 31 Marylanders have successfully completed the training internship, competed for jobs in their chosen field and are now employed at JHHS.
Some of these newly employed Marylanders are working at Johns Hopkins Hospital System, thanks to an innovative partnership with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services and the Center for Urban Families. Clients are identified by BCDSS, successfully
We’re continuing to build on these better results by making the better choices to educate, innovate and rebuild for a 21st century economy. We’re investing record amounts in our public schools, which have been named #1 in the nation for five years
in a row by Education Week. We’re spurring innovation in growing sectors like life sciences, biotechnology, green jobs and cybersecurity, and we’re funding job training programs to provide Marylanders with the skills they need to fill those jobs. And we’re investing in an infrastructure that will support our innovation economy— roads and bridges, water, and cyber infrastructure. The most important job we create is the next one. We have made great progress together, but there is more work to be done to ensure that Marylanders can compete and win in the 21st century global economy. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 15

story of hope
By Jearlean Taylor J & Company Christian ModelingInChrist.
“Pretty Girl Blues” Pretty girl blues. Was this a label that I put on myself or one that I allowed others to give me? Why did I allow myself to hide deep in my pain? I hid behind my pretty looks, clothes, and the truth within. My outer beauty always shined, but I was suffering on the inside with low self-esteem, pity, and unhappiness. Could my beauty cover up my hurt? I desperately wanted to be accepted. Yes, I have a darling personality and nobody could take that away, but was it enough to mend the hurt and internal pain? My parents sacrificed and cared for all my brothers and sisters, but would they anticipate one of their children developing cancer at the age of two. We are familiar with several types of cancer, but a baby developing a rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma was unheard of. This was such a rare form of cancer the doctors thought I would not live to celebrate my 4th birthday. How could this be and why? Most importantly, how would the doctors care for me? My care began at the University Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, but my family was advised to seek a second opinion at Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital in New York City. The majority of my childhood and adolescent years were spent in New York City. At Sloan Kettering, I would have many surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Because of the cancer, reconstructive surgery was not optional. This procedure would cause me to have a colostomy and ileostomy bag to aid my bladder and bowel function for the rest of my life. Even after this point, the surgeries seemed to never stop. Imagine growing up wearing two bags, being teased and set apart because you cannot tell if it is time to change your bags. My classmates would tease me and say, “Hey what is that smell?” I had incidents in school and when I did not know how to handle these situations, it really caused my low self-esteem. These incidents really caused me to hide my internal insecurities. My heart’s desire was to be like other children. To be teased by my peers was
heart breaking. Becoming a teenager and maturing into a young adult were difficult years. I later attracted a few boyfriends in my life, but when they got close, I would break it off, fearing they would not understand. I did not want to feel rejected, lonely, or be talked about, so the “runner” in me did just that. I was afraid that no one would love me for me. I had a method of trying to hide “the secret.” Someone will understand, I thought. It seemed like no one did. I felt like a fool. As I continued to hide behind my family, friends, and pretty looks, I developed the craft of covering and dressing up the outside. This disease caused me to hide deep in my pain. Questions would arise. How would I cope? How would I handle what life had dealt me? Could I continue to hide “the secret”? So I asked myself, “Why do I feel so blue, and how can I change the way I am feeling?” Surely, there was an answer. I could not imagine, but God would change my life. He healed me from cancer. I went into remission a year after my chemotherapy and radiation treatments and it never returned. I am His miracle child. He protected and assured me everything was going to be all right. God not only healed my physical body, but my spirit and mind. That is what needed to be healed desperately. I am thankful for that spiritual process which took place within me. My insecurities did not change overnight, but I learned how to be a survivor. The question was not “Why Me?” but “Why Not Me?” This “secret” would no longer be a secret, but a triumphant story. One of my biggest dreams was to walk that big runway (“catwalk”) as a fashion model. I know my situation is unusual in this modeling industry, but I thank God for opening closed doors. Many people thought it would not happen, considering my minor restrictions. I have won several beauty contests and runway events. With my dreams, aspirations, and more importantly my determination to change the standards of the fashion industry, I am now the CEO, founder, and modeling instructor for J & Company Christian ModelingInChrist. www.jaccmodelinginc.com. Our motto is we build, train, and develop from the inside out. To see the outer beauty you could never tell I live with these adversities. After all I have gone through, who would have thought becoming a fashion model, inspirational writer, motivational speaker, and owner of a Christian-based modeling company was in the plans for me. This story may seem personal, but because of my adversities in life I will continue to reach out, encourage, uplift, listen, understand, and help those in need. My faith and trust in God makes all the difference. I am thankful for my family, friends, and most of all angels that watch over me. Today, at 46 years old with two ostomy bags I am blessed. I am very thankful for this journey. I am a fashion model, WOW! Sometimes I cannot believe it. I am also very excited that my new book is published “Pretty Girls Blues” and is now available www.prettygirlblues.com. As I look back over my life, I would not change anything. My light will continue to shine so others can witness and know they can overcome obstacles. Do not be ashamed or afraid to tell your story because you never know how someone may feel. I can and will live a full and vibrant life. I give special recognition to my Pastor and mentor (Dr. Rev. Therm M. James Sr.), family, and friends. www.gracenglorymagazine.org www.gracenglorymagazine.org 17 17

to your good health We have all sung or heard this familiar song at some worship service, on the radio or in concert. The message of hope it brings is encouraging to even those who have had little hope for things to change in their lives. The message of new beginnings is one we are familiar with this time of year. We all reflect on the past year and then promise to make this year more fruitful than the last. We like to put old things behind us and press toward our future. We wipe the slate clean and begin new projects, new visions and as the song suggests embark upon a new season. Each of us has the potential to make changes that will push us forward or take us backwards. Our choices today, this month, or this year can become a turning point and position us for a fresh start. Some of us need a fresh start because the losses of the past year or two have left us bankrupt, not just financially, but mentally, physically and spiritually. The loss of a job, your marriage, a loved one or health challenges may have taken their toll. You never thought you would be unemployed at your age, divorced, a widow or chronically ill. Whatever challenges you may have had to face in the past or this year ahead, remember that Jesus is the author of new beginnings. He spent his ministry restoring, healing, delivering and resurrecting the broken lives of those he encountered. He gave life, purpose and strength to those who were weak and powerless. He gave a testimony to those others had written off. He came that we might have life abundantly and that means a fresh start is possible no matter what situation you have been through in the past or will go through in the future. Starting over again is not something you have to do alone. Jesus has promised to be with us throughout our joys and struggles. There is nothing too hard for God and a fresh start is available to everyone who believes it is. Take hold of what God has promised in His word. Get connected to a local church and other Christians who can encourage you and build you up as you embark on a fresh start. We all can use this time of reflection to grow closer to God and to be instruments of His grace. Make sure the fresh start you seek blesses not only you but others as well. Remember to put Jesus at the center of whatever changes you desire for the year ahead, then you will experience blessings that are exceedingly and abundantly more than you could ever think or imagine. education digest a paycheck. As a Christian, I agree with the words of the Apostle Paul written to his followers in Ephesus. He wrote, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) We all have a purpose and a mission.
T
he Holy Bible remains the best-selling book of all times. The first ten words should serve as reminders to each of us that we can start again. Every now and then my personal computer goes a bit haywire, erratic, out of control. This is the time I turn it off or reboot it. I believe that’s what we have to do as we make plans for 2014. This is not limited to my favorite audience, the young minds occupying our schools and places of higher learning. I believe this is also valuable for the adults of our day. It’s ok to start again. In the television and radio industry we practice something called “take two.” This means the first presentation either in front of the camera or in the audio booth did not meet our expectation. In those cases, we simply say, “take two.” I’ll admit every now and then there is a take three, four, five etc. As you reflect on the year past, you should be able to identify places along your journey where it was necessary to declare a new beginning. Moses, the writer of the scripture passage I mentioned at the start of this article, declares that it is God who created the heavens and the earth. If we read a little further, we’ll also learn this, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27) This passage should serve as a constant reminder of what lies within us, God-given potential. I believe we shouldn’t take our existence for granted. My father was a proponent of work. He believed that each of the Tooten children should seek employment. In fact, if we were slow to find work, he’d provide some parental assistance. He knew what we were capable of doing and that we’d soon realize the benefits of work;
This year should become a year of new beginnings and new motivation to press on in spite of life’s obstacles. Overcoming the Holiday Blues
When you are single, the holiday season can be tricky to navigate for many reasons. From Thanksgiving Day to Valentine’s Day, it is one holiday after another that focuses on family, love and requires some type of couple event. These seasons while joyous and festive may be a little awkward, somewhat overwhelming and right down depressing if you are not careful. Singles that have been married, or in a serious relationship in the past, may find the holidays brings up memories of their past- good or bad- but memories none the less. The holidays are usually filled with an extra emphasis on the family and non –singles are uncomfortable with those that are single, and honestly some singles are uncomfortable with their singleness. It’s that office party that requires a spouse or significant other to attend. Should you attend alone or make an excuse why you can’t make this event? Your friend invites you to their holiday gathering and all the guests invited are married and will be there with their significant other. Do you attend again and be the odd wheel? Your family gathering consists of family members you have not seen in a while and with those hugs and embraces comes the statement that seems to kill any party, “You are so nice, I don’t know why you are not married.” Yes, you are thinking the same thing Aunt So-in-So, and now your thoughts are on the “why” of your singleness. The “why” is a painful and sometimes uncomfortable place because it deals with many issues. You begin to ponder, “Am I single due to a divorce, a death of a spouse, a death of a relationship”…..the list goes on and on, but the reality is the same. Here are a few suggestions to navigate around those “holidays’ blues”:
single life
1. Make an effort to give to others that have a need - Volunteer at a food pantry, visit a hospital or nursing home and share some quality time giving to others that are in need during this season. While your focus in now on the other person, you will find this type of giving very rewarding and you will gain more benefits than you realize. This type of giving to strangers brings a healing to your person. 2. Attend holiday gatherings - Do your best to be a part of the celebrations and enjoy life and enjoy the gift that others bring into your life during this season. Don’t feel obligated to stay the entire time, but know your limits and leave if you must especially if you feel extremely uncomfortable. 3. Create your own single tradition - Do something fun for yourself and enjoy your singleness. It can be a movie, dinner, something for yourself that you do alone. You cannot include your children. The key is to enjoy your own company. Many singles do not enjoy being alone with themselves. Start your tradition!!! 4. Avoid the need to have “anybody” - This occurs for many reasons, but avoid just being with someone for the sake of having someone to take to the holiday gatherings. You can do yourself and the other person a favor by being honest and not playing that game for the sake of saving face.

Happy and Healthy 2014! What New Year’s goals did you make when the apple dropped at midnight on December 31? If you resolved to improve your health during the upcoming year, you’re more likely to succeed if you gradually make healthy changes. Over the next few days, keep a food journal to help you identify areas that need improvement. Keeping a food journal helps you pinpoint your eating pattern and will enable you to easily modify it. If possible, have your registered dietitian review your journal. Starting on January 5, follow this 8-week program to a healthier you.
day. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen counter and stock your refrigerator with baby carrots, celery slices, raw broccoli, and ready-toeat salads. Fruits and vegetables are packed with beneficial fibers, vitamins, and antioxidants. They fill up your stomach fast so you feel full earlier. They are also low in calories and help to keep your calories count low.
Week of January 5-11 Eat a healthy breakfast everyday. Many people often skip breakfast. Some skip it because they are often rushed in the morning and have little time to prepare. Some people skip breakfast as a measure to control their weight. Studies have shown that breakfast eaters have a higher metabolism and are more successful in work and school than those who skip that meal. Oftentimes, skipping a meal results in an increased total caloric intake, than if we just ate more frequently throughout the course of the day.
Week of February 2-February 8 Make the switch to low-fat dairy products to reduce your intake of artery-clogging saturated fat. Try 1% or skim milk, nonfat yogurt, reduced fat cheeses, fat-free sour cream, and low-fat ice cream. For healthy bones and teeth, aim to have 3 servings a day.
Week of January 12-18 Drinking more water instead of soda, juice, sweet tea, coffee or other sugar-sweetened beverages drinks saves calories. Even the zero-calorie diet soda offers no nutritional value- it’s just water with added artificial sweeteners and caffeine. Carrying a bottle of water with you will encourage you to sip it instead of reaching for sweetened beverages. Week of January 19-25 Practice portion control. Check the serving size on the nutrition facts panel and use the correct measuring utensils to get an idea of what a serving looks like. For example, one serving of pasta means ½ cup of cooked pasta. However, most restaurants serve a pasta dish with 3-4 servings of pasta. You do not need to finish and clean off the plate every time. You can simply ask for a take-out container and take home the leftovers. Week of January 26-February 1 Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per
Week of February 9-15 Boost fiber intake by eating whole grain foods and beans. It’s an easy way to lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. Make half your grains whole. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole grain cereal, breads, crackers, rice, or pasta every day. One ounce is about 1 slice of bread, 1 cup of breakfast cereal, or ½ cup of cooked rice or pasta. Look to see that grains such as wheat, rice, oats, or corn are referred to as “whole” near the beginning of the list of ingredients. Week of February 16-22 Know your fats. Look for foods low in saturated fats, Trans fat, and cholesterol to help reduce the risk of heart disease. Most of the fats you eat should be polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Keep your total fat intake between 20% and 30% of calories. Sprinkle flaxseeds on yogurt, cereal, and casseroles, and eat seafood twice a week. Instead of snacking on chips, and cookies, munch on a healthy trail mix made with nuts, dried fruit, and low-fat popcorn. Limit fried foods to one or fewer servings per week, and use olive oil or canola oil when cooking and baking.
By: Herline A. Knights, RD,LD
Week of February 23-March 1 Reduce sodium (salt) intake for a healthier heart. Research shows that eating less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium (about 1 tsp of salt) per day may reduce the risk of high blood pressure. Most of the sodium that people eat comes from processed foods, not from the saltshaker. Look for low- sodium canned soups and vegetables, and limit salty snacks. Enjoy fresh meats and produce, and flavor with herbs and spices. Finally, it is very important to find your balance between food and physical activity. Becoming a healthier you isn’t just about eating healthy; it’s also about physical activity. Regular physical activity is important for your overall health and fitness. It also helps you control body weight by balancing the calories you take in as food with calories you expand each day. The centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with the American College of Sports Medicine, recommends adults get at least 30 minutes of moderately intensive physical activity daily. For instance, walking at a moderate pace for 30-60 minutes most days of the week will help you maintain aerobic fitness and decrease your risk for heart disease. It will also keep muscles flexible, reduce stress, and help prevent osteoporosis. Healthy Eating Guidelines are intended to promote overall health while reducing the risk of developing nutrition-related diseases like cancer and heart disease. They are directed at all healthy individuals over the age of 14. There is nothing difficult about healthy eating. It is simply a common-sense approach to food that is easy to live with, once you get used to it. Have a happy & healthy New Year! www.gracenglorymagazine.org www.gracenglorymagazine.org 27 27

body basics
Nothing puts a damper on fitness faster than a boring exercise routine, so make your workouts stick by trying fun exercises this year. We’ve rounded up 10 fun possibilities, but the best routine is the one you enjoy — so keep trying new thingsuntil you find one you love. Hint: Look to all the fun activities you used to do during recess as a kid. By Laura Williams, M.S.ed. (www.sheknows.com)
Get a Kick Out of Fitness! Kettlebells One of the most effective fitness tools we’ve found, kettlebells will boost your cardio, sculpt your body and improve your strength with every move. Kettlebells come in a wide range of weights, giving you the ability to start easy and work your way up as your fitness soars. Our suggestion is to get the Empower Fitness 3-in-1 Kettlebell, which gives you five-, eight-, and 12-pound options. It also comes with Gin Miller’s Swing Yourself Fit DVD, which features three different workouts that will change your body. Kettlebells will not only tone you from head-to-toe, they are also a fun way to bust fitness boredom. Rollerskating Remember the good ol’ days when all your friends had their birthday parties at the skating rink, and you spent hours racing around the floor? Recapture the fun by grabbing a pair of quads or inline skates and hitting the pavement. You’ll love the feel of the wind in your hair, and you’ll be psyched to know that the average 150-pound woman burns roughly 450 calories during an hour of skating. Trampolining Trampoline gyms like Sky Zone Indoor
Trampoline Park are popping up all across the country. That’s because jumping on a trampoline is excellent exercise — and it’s just plain fun. If you don’t have a trampoline gym in your area, create your own jumping workout using a home trampoline. Representatives from Springfree Trampoline suggest performing a totalbody strengthening workout incorporating straight jumps, seat drops, pike jumps, hands-and-knees drops and jumping jacks. A 20-minute routine will leave you feeling both exhilarated and worn out. Hula hooping Hula hooping requires balance, coordination and core strength; plus, the constant movement boosts the heart rate for an effective cardio workout. Pick up a weighted hula hoop and hooping video to get moving. Dancing Dancing is a great way to exercise while having a blast, and the best part is that you can do it anywhere there’s music. Simply turn up your stereo and create your own routine to your favorite playlist. If you need a little help to get your hips swaying, take a Zumba, hip-hop or barre ballet class at a recreation center. Leigh-Ann Plac, P.T., D.P.T. at The Hospital for Special Surgery’s Rehabilitation and Performance Center points out that Zumba’s incorporation of a wide variety of dance styles requires whole-body movements that help develop coordination, power, balance and aerobic fitness. Likewise, she notes that barre ballet helps boost balance, flexibility, core stability and strength using body weight resistance. Plus, you can do it practically anywhere. Suspension training Suspension training using a TRX or Jungle Gym XT trainer can help you gain excellent fullbody balance and strength wherever you are. These easily transportable devices engage large and small
muscle groups while you perform pushups, squats, lunges and other body-weight exercises. Water exercise Practically anyone can take part in and benefit from water-based fitness activities such as water aerobics, water jogging and lap swimming. You’ll love the weightless feeling of water exercise, and you’ll be amazed at how your body can move when it isn’t constrained by gravity. Try classes like aqua Zumba, Ai Chi and aquatic group cycling for a break from the usual water exercise routine. Yoga Yoga has been around for thousands of years, and its following continues to grow because of the fun challenge that it presents. Yoga instructor Maria Fratus says, “Yoga has amazing effects on the mind and body, and you can’t ignore the fact that participants get into positions their bodies have not seen since the fifth grade: handstands, wheels, down dogs! Now that’s fun!” Outdoor cycling and alternatives Indoor spinning classes can be fun, but nothing beats the thrill of a real ride. Pick up a bike and hit the roads and trails for a consistently fun challenge. If you shy away from cycling because you can’t stand the butt burn, check out a few of the new outdoor cycling alternatives such as the Trikke and the ElliptiGO. The Trikke engages your legs and core as you power the three-wheeled standing cycle around town, while the Elliptigo functions as an outdoor elliptical machine, allowing you to run on wheels! Punk Rope Sure, you could grab a jump rope and get a great cardio workout by yourself, but nothing will get you huffing and puffing faster than the full-out Punk Rope fitness class. The great thing is you’ll be having so much fun that you won’t care how hard you’re working. Find a class near you by scoping out the Punk Rope website. www.gracenglorymagazine.org www.gracenglorymagazine.org 29 29

How to Properly Plan Your GREATEST Financial Year
T
he American Dream has become a debt nightmare for many, even in the church. If we are honest with ourselves, we all want to own our own home, drive a good car and create a comfortable lifestyle for our family. Among the many goals we will set for 2014 as believers, it is very important that we set financial goals. Many Christians do not adopt this philosophy concerning their finances. They believe that all I have to do is go to church and pray and everything will be ALL RIGHT with my money. Well, that is partly true, but not the complete truth. The truth is God expects you to plan and He promises to direct you in the plan. The wisest and wealthiest man in the Bible said this, “If you PLAN and work hard, you will have plenty; if you get in a hurry, you end up poor.” (Proverbs 21:5 (CEV)) He also said, “A man may plan his course; but the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9 (AAT)) So we can see clearly here in scripture that God expects us to PLAN. One person said “if you fail to PLAN, you plan to FAIL.” Let us see how we can plan for our greatest financial year. In Christ, we should always expect the best and be prepared for the worst. We can do ALL things through Christ that strengthens us. These are steps that can be taken to assist you in your planning:
you are then and only then beginning to get serious about eliminating debt in your life. 2014 is a year of debt-release.
3. Build Liquidity. What this simply means is that you need to create more positive cash flow this year. Most Christians as I often say have “Cash No” or Cash Go”, but what you need is CASHFLOW. Controlling your spending is just the first step, but you also have to build your assets. If you are on a dead end job you need to discover your gift and let it make room for you. (Proverbs 128:16) The economic system today is not set up for 9-5pm workers to get ahead financially. It is modern slavery and bondage. If you sincerely desire and want financial freedom as a believer in Christ, then you must start your own business, or get involved with a Home-Based MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) direct selling business. Don’t quit your 9–5 employment until you have built your business to a place where you are self-sufficient. Real estate is also a way to build liquidity and increase your asset-base. Christians ought to have real estate; the Three (3) reasons why I should plan financially: earth is the Lord’s. (Psalm 24:1)
1. God expects me to play an active part in exercising my mind and abilities.
4. Finally, set short term and long term goals. Goals are your stepping stones to 2. It helps to strengthen your control over life’s your dreams becoming a reality. The setbacks. promise of God is if we delight ourselves in the Lord he will give us the desires 3. Planning is the biblical prerequisite for financial of our heart. (Psalm 37:24) When you increase. delight yourself in Christ, which means spend time in worship, prayer, fellowship, and giving to His work 1. Spend less than what you earn. The only way to do this is to write joyfully, generously and sacrificially, you have a right to set goals that and record your earnings and spending. Consumption is probably your will allow Him to provide for your NEEDS and DESIRES. “public enemy #1” concerning your money. Before every purchase ask yourself these simple questions: “Is this a need, want or desire?” I believe that these steps will assist you no matter where you are Chances are it feels like a need but it really isn’t. I thought that I could not live without a CEV – Contemporary English Version cassette player in my vehicle. Several months after I had purchased the AAT – The Complete Bible: An American vehicle, it occurred to me that I was doing fine without it. I found out Translation then that there are some things you think you need, but you can save money if you do without it. Dr. Kenneth O Robinson II 2. Avoid Debt. This year, you must avoid debt like it’s a plague. Debt will rob you of your future happiness. Write down all your debts and make a debt cancellation list. Be determined to eliminate debt. God wants his children sin-free and debt-free. In my workbook, “Creating Wealth in the New Millennium”, I give simple strategies on how to get out of debt and stay out of debt. Dear Reader, “Happy New Year! As you start this New Year of reading, consider The Life You’ve Always Wanted by Ortberg. Let this be the start of a wonderful reading journey for you. Enjoy this review by my good friend and fellow reader, Siobhan Salisbury.” - Brandie
The Life You’ve Always Wanted By John Ortberg As I began to read The Life You’ve Always Wanted, I was somewhat disappointed, which was the very word Mr. Ortberg used repeatedly throughout the first few pages of the book. I thought the book had such a negative “vibe” that I didn’t think I’d be able to easily finish it. Upon further reading, I discovered that what the author was doing was showing us all of our human inadequacies. The inadequacies we all have that cause us to be disappointing to ourselves, each other and even to God. Thankfully, Mr. Ortberg doesn’t stop with pointing out our fallacies. In fact, in this book I discovered that he only shed light on them to show us how desperately we are in need of transformation or “morphing” by God. This book really reminds us of the reason we strive to act like, talk like, think like and live like Christ- to become better representatives of Christ on this Earth. It’s a reminder that saying you’re a “Christian” is more than a word or a religious affiliation. Being a Christ-follower means living a transformed life. We must become the kind of Christians who are the best argument “for” Christians, not against. Anyone who reads this book will be instilled with a new vigor and hunger for living a spiritually-disciplined life. When considered in the times we now live, when more and more is acceptable or “tolerated”, believers living in a Christ-like way are not only important, we are vital! We are required to live in a way that holds up
Christ as the standardthis book will lead you in that very direction. Another good thing about this book is its introduction of a new way to define discipline. In The Life You’ve Always Wanted, Ortberg defines discipline as, “Doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right way, for the right reason.” We must admit that at some time we’ve all found ourselves doing the right thing but perhaps the timing was off or our motives were wrong or
it wasn’t exactly the right way. This book will inspire you to make more decisions that will please God, rather than man. I recommend this book to every believer. There isn’t a single one of us that can’t use a refresher on how to live a better life, more pleasing to Christ which, coincidentally, turns out to be the life you always wanted. Siobhan Salisbury “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil 4:13

Chris Tucker & Todd Bridges Last month in Winston Salem, NC at the Union Baptist Church Sanctuary, 200 ex-drug dealers, gang members, prostitutes, and all other former street life participants received a certificate of completion at the 10th Annual Corner 2 Corner Drug Dealers & Street Life Conference. Stand-up comedian turned actor Chris Tucker and former child star actor Todd Bridges surprised the graduates with their presence, and delivered messages of hope, healing and inspiration. Todd Bridges, whose career was brought to a halt for 10 years due to alcohol and drug addiction, encouraged the graduates through his story giving details of his ups and downs, sobriety, and the importance of faith, determination, and perseverance. Chris Tucker on the other hand did what he does best, he had the graduates cracking up with his jokes and impersonations, as only
Chris Tucker can do. He left them with encouraging words to live by and grow on, “God will give you strength to never give up. The main thing about life is to never give up.”

word of encouragement
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed and made appointment with them. And when they saw Him, they fell down and worshiped Him; but some doubted. Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, all authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days (perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. Amen (so let it be). [Matthew 28:16-20 -- Amplified Bible] The stage was set! Jesus’ ascension back to the Father has left His body – the Body of Christ --with specific instructions. Announcing that all power was given to Him, He gave His disciples the power to make disciples of all men, baptize and teach the people to observe that which He had shown them as He walked the earth with them. In the Book of Acts we see the twelve disciples do that which Jesus had ordained them to do, which He through the Holy Spirit is expecting us to do: Acts 1: Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to the disciples and ascends to heaven before their eyes. Acts 2: The outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Peter gives an anointed and prophetic sermon. 3,000 souls added to the Church. Signs and wonders follow. Acts 3: Peter and John are used by God to heal a lame man at the Beautiful Gate. Acts 4: More people believe the word and are added to the Church. Peter and John arrested. The Apostles preach with great power. Acts 5: The Apostles display signs and wonders. The sick and those oppressed by evil spirits are healed. The Apostles arrested and released from prison by an angel. Acts 6: Stephen, full of faith and power does great wonders and signs among the people. Acts 8: Simon the sorcerer is saved. Philip does miracles and signs. Peter and John go to preach in Samaria and the Holy Spirit falls on some people. The Holy Spirit leads Philip to the Eunuch from Ethiopia. The Eunuch is saved. Acts 10: Cornelius sees a vision, Peter sees a vision. The Holy Spirit falls on Cornelius household. Acts 12: James is killed and Peter is arrested. An angel rescues Peter. God’s word grows and multiplies. Acts 13: Saul now called Paul pronounces judgment on sorcerer, who goes blind for a time. Many people added to the church 38 January January2014 2014||Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 38

through Paul and Barnabas’ preaching. Acts 14: Signs and wonders done by Paul and Barnabas. Paul heals lame man in Lystra crippled from birth. Paul stoned and left as dead, the disciples pray and Paul is revived. Acts 16: Paul encourages the church. The church increases in number. Praise and worship releases Paul and Silas from jail. The jailer and his household are saved. Acts 17: Many believe and several are saved. Acts 18: Many believe the gospel. Paul has a vision and Apollos is equipped. Acts 19: Paul does unusual miracles. Seven sons of Sceva try to cast out demons. Many saved. God’s Word grows. Acts 20: Eutychus raised from the dead. Acts 21: Agabus prophesies what will happen to Paul in Jerusalem and Paul is beaten by a mob and arrested by soldiers. Acts 25: Paul witnesses to King Agrippa. Acts 28: Paul heals someone with fever and dysentery. More believe the gospel. Where does that leave the Body of Christ in 2014? It puts us [the Body of Christ] in a place where we have to shine the more for Jesus. Not only should we allow the Holy Spirit to heal through us, raise others from both a physical and spiritual death, but also to do unusual miracles. Those oppressed by evil spirits to be healed. We are living in the church’s finest hours. Does that mean Jesus can return right this minute? Yes and no. Yes if the gospel is preached to the entire world. No, if the gospel has not been preached to the entire world. [Matthew 24:14] We are to not just sit in our pretty churches, we are to go into all the world and share the “Good News”. In 2014, let us strive to show the world what Christ spoke in John 13:35 -- “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” As we put aside our differences, let us make sure that the kingdom of darkness does not have the opportunity to trick people into not accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and soon coming Savior. The Body of Christ should be living epistles read of men. [2 Corinthians 3:2]. In other words, we may be the only Bible that some people will see. Therefore let us go out and shine for Jesus. Let’s make His glorious in all the earth. In 2014, let us not seek only fame and fortune [not that anything is wrong with having things], but let the entire Body of Christ strive to be doers of the word and not hearers only. Which means let there be a unity amongst us. Let us all finish the race that is set before us. I have such an expectancy in my spirit about 2014. Join me as we walk in that spirit of expectancy and shine for Jesus. I am confident that we could do it with God’s precious Holy Spirit that lives on the inside of us. On behalf of Donna Jennifer [Royalty] Ross and In Trust Ministries, we wish you a Happy, Healthy, Wealthy and shining for Jesus New Year. Luv, luv y’all.
