Determined
There is one word that has taken on a new meaning for me; that word is determined. I am often in awe and amazed at what God is able to do with one single person’s life. God is able to do exceeding abundantly more than you could ever imagine with your life. I believe that one of the keys to living a great life is being determined to live the life God has prepared for you. Sometimes tragedy can take your life in another whole direction than where you were headed. It takes a whole new level of determination to still give God the glory and live your life for Christ in spite of whatever you are going through. Despite whatever has happened or has not happened in your life thus far, you have to be determined to not let it cause you to just lay down and die; in other words give up. You have to be determined NOT to give up or give in. “A difficult time can be more readily endured if we retain the conviction that our existence holds a purpose – a cause to pursue, a person to love, a goal to achieve.” (John Maxwell) There are several synonyms for determination- resolve, single-mindedness, perseverance, and persistence, to name a few. Determination is also defined as a tendency to move in a fixed direction. Thus the scripture, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14-15). Staying focused is a form
of determination, knowing that the outcome will be far greater than what you are experiencing in the moment. The Bible tells us that what we sometimes go through in life are light afflictions, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:17). You may be saying (and I agree) that what you are going through is far from light; but no matter what it is that you are going through, it pales compared to eternal glory. It takes a lot of strength and courage to be determined and remain determined. Being determined is making a firm decision and being resolved not to change it. Never underestimate determination and what it can do. I believe that God is looking for us as believers to remain steadfast, unmovable and always abounding in the work of the Lord. God promises our determination will not be in vain. Be encouraged. . .

It is an absolute privilege to be back on Grace and Glory again. I want to thank the Grace and Glory Team for this opportunity. It is my favorite magazine. I am truly living Ephesians 3: 20, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (NKJV). Indeed the Father is doing above all that I could ever imagine. I believe that this is the season for the body of Christ to live above and beyond. However, before you can go above and beyond, often times you have to go beneath and below. I’m telling you what I have lived through and experienced. I’ve had to move out of the Kingdom Village location in Suitland, MD, which housed our women and children. We were there for five years; and then believe it or not, a month later, we had to move out of our Kingdom City location in Waldorf, MD which was our men’s facility. We were there for 8 years. That’s 18 trailer loads that had to be moved into 8 extra-large storage units and we had to relocate over 100 men, women and children who were so dear to my heart, but are doing well and continuing with the process. In the moving and what seemed to be calamity, I continued to hear the still small voice of the Lord saying, “I’m with you even in what looks like loss.” With all the shifting taking place, we had to move our services to a new location. Kingdom Word & Worship Center is now holding services at The Blackburn Center at Howard University; our services start at 2:00pm on Sundays and 7:00pm on Thursdays. This is an awesome shift from tradition. It’s a great evangelism opportunity for expansion. Here’s the above and beyond! a part in ministry. We have now incorporated a family, fun & fellowship hour once a month. We have family activities such as bowling, music and food. We are teaching people that life and church go hand in hand. There is never a dull moment! I must say that even in all the transitioning with the ministry, God is still opening up doors in other arenas. Our organization, House of Help City of Hope was featured in a mini-series called Opportunity Lives. It’s a mini-series of 7 stories of beautiful people doing amazing things to help change the community in which they live. I am series #5 entitled, Untapped Potential. Over 2 million viewers have watched the Comeback Series. It talks about the recipe of love throughout the country, people doing what they love to do by helping and loving other people. You can go to this website to view our series as well as the other series: http://opportunitylives.com/episode/untapped-potential-2/. Not only has that opportunity come forth, but recently, I was invited to speak on a panel on CSPAN as a National Humanitarian Expert. The Summit was awesome! I was able to share about transforming lives alongside Mr. Bob Woodson, Omar Jahwar, Deion Sanders and my good friend Pastor Buster Soaries. Congressman Paul Ryan was the keynote speaker. It was just an awesome event. We talked about the recipe for transforming lives and about how you can’t get hope until you get help and that the prerequisite of help is having a humble heart and asking for help, wanting help. Once you want help then you can handle hope. It was an excellent summit with lots
of feedback from CSPAN viewers. I am soooo excited. I am on my way to Nigeria for the month of August. It’s going to be 25 days of teaching and preaching. God has opened up many doors. I’ll be doing a 10 city tour in Benin City, Yenagoa, and Beyelsa, just to name a few of the cities I’ll be traveling to. We are so excited about the opportunity to minister to the Nigerian family. We expect signs, wonders and miracles to accompany us. God is great and the people of Nigeria are excited. I’m also expanding my ministry and using the power of technology to bring life changing information to the global community! Join me on Periscope this September when I launch my live show, teaching you how to succeed in life and in business using powerful Biblical principles. Download the Periscope app from the Apple store or the Google Play Store and follow me in social media, @bishop_ holloway, to stay in the loop for our exciting launch. So Jackie, now let’s talk about The AfricanCaribbean Outstanding Leadership Award. I met some of the world’s greatest leaders from all over the country doing some wonderful and outstanding things for the Kingdom. It was truly a humbling experience that I will never ever forget, having had the opportunity to stand on the platform with such great people such as Apostle Dora Dumbuya from Sierra Leone, Paul Monteiro, Bishop Darlington Johnson and many, many others. This award was given in appreciation of the long humanitarian work in Kenya and Uganda Orphanages and the diaspora work in America. We have housed many of the African and Caribbean diaspora needing help. The children are doing well. We are still raising funds. Readers can go to my website to give a donation. I am so humbled for this award. Yes! Jackie. I entered my first beauty pageant despite the reoccurrence of my osteoarthritis in my knee which had me immobile for a couple of weeks. God gave me the grace and strength
to fly to San Antonio, Texas, where I participated in the Ms. United America pageant. I met beautiful and magnificent women from across the globe. These ladies taught me how to own the runway and the Holy Spirit empowered me to display my talents and as a result I won the People’s Choice Award and Presidential Medal. To my surprise, I won first runner up! Nothing is impossible at over 50. My goal is to be the next Ms. Universe Plus. That’s a challenging assignment, but I’m having fun doing it and I’m on my way. My next competition is in March 2016. Yes the movie is coming out Spring of 2016. The name of the movie is called “Taking it Back”. The producer is Mr. Bruce Brown of Bruce Brown Films who has starred actresses such as Taraji P Henson. You can see the trailer at www.themovietakingitback.com. The purpose of this movie is to release a passion throughout the country to call those who are silent to become active. It is an autobiography of my book Seen Glory Untold Story. If you haven’t read the book you can get it at www.seengloryuntoldstory. com. It’s about how we took over one of the most crime ridden neighborhoods of Southeast DC. This neighborhood was notorious for prostitution, crack cocaine, heroin and other like drugs. When we arrived at 16th Street in 2000 the crime was so bad that the utility company couldn’t come and read the meters without getting robbed and beaten. Police presence was literally non-existent. Within 3 months of our owning the property, the Holy Spirit through prayer began to show us how to cleanse and drive out the impoverishness and insanity in the neighborhood. As a result of our coming to 16th Street, 15 years later there has been a re-gentrification in the neighborhood. Last month I was sworn in by our newly elected mayor, Mayor Muriel Bowser and one of her interfaith council. I challenge anyone reading Grace & Glory today to take a stand and take back their communities. Don’t be afraid. Whatever city or state you live in, HELP IS HERE! Q&A Continued from page 9 teach and show how this can be accomplished in the spirit and in the natural. This movie is a must see!!! IT will encourage you, inspire you and set you on fire. TAKING IT BACK 2016!!! September 2015 will be the launch of my 2nd book, 30 Days of Proverbs & Nuggets of Dr. Holloway. It’s going to be powerful and tasty. It has nuggets to get you through the day. There is a spiritual full course meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner, not fast food. It will release an anointing that will get results. It is to stir and inspire the seed of nuggets to grow what’s in you. There will be a workbook where you can write down your thoughts and what God is saying to you. This book is a recipe for success. Readers will be able to find this book in all the major stores. In November of 2015 we will launch our new CD, In the Garden: Sounds of Pleasing God. This has been an overdue long awaited project. I could not release it, except in excellence. This CD will be filled full of powerful worship songs written and inspired by the Holy Spirit. Last, but definitely not least Jackie, when I say above and beyond. . . I am so excited to be in business and partnership with the most beautiful, intelligent sugar sharp, Deliliah Johnson, who is my daughter. We opened a salon business venture which is a whole separate, awesome testimony. Salon Anew is located at 4505 St. Barnabas Road, Temple Hills, MD. Our motto is “Atmosphere means Everything”! We invite women and men to come out and experience Salon Anew. We have the best hairstylists and barbers around! We specialize in Natural Hair Treatment, Weaving and braids. We are a full service salon that is the talk of the town! It’s elegant, quiet, professional and classy! Yes, the Steve Harvey Radio Show was most interesting. Shout out to the producer, Bobby Gails. I hear I’ll be back on the show in the future. To all those who gave shout outs, thank you! I talked about House of Help City of Hope and a fundraiser event for our non-profit organization. It was a great opportunity. Our 10 10 August August2015 2015||Grace&Glory Grace&Glory
commercial played 3 times on July 22, 2015 during the Steve Harvey Morning Show! Yes Jackie, I know you‘re asking the question, Bishop how are you getting all of this done, especially when you are physically challenged in your body. I must say that it’s only God’s grace and mercy. It’s the dream team that God has given me; it’s their love and commitment and teamwork. Our hearts desire is to please God and our passion is to see people’s lives changed. Whether they are incarcerated, on drugs, in the crack house, a politician in the White House, beauty queens or prostitutes, they are souls to be loved unjudged and won to Christ. People are hurting. All colors, all cultures, all classes of life.
Before I close I want to mention that all of my children and I have just launched our family business. Our first Family Production gospel concert featuring gospel recording artists J Moss, Isaiah Thomas and many others was a huge success It was a time of fellowship. Our motto is family fun and entertainment at affordable prices. That's what we are being to the body of Christ. It was awesome, hundreds were in attendance, and we plan to host the next one this coming November. Well Jackie, that’s the update from Bishop Shirley Holloway! Thank you and your team again for having me as your guest. Maximize The Moment This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24) I believe that if we are honest we’d have to admit that as we progress in age, we have the tendency of losing track of time. This may be akin to what’s jokingly referred to as a “senior” moment. Every now and then, it takes me a second or two to remember the day of the week. Most often this happens if I’m anticipating an important event scheduled for later that same week. I’m also guilty of getting caught up in the moment, especially if relates to something that draws my attention away from a task at hand. Lately, I’m learning more and more how to maximize those quiet and quality filled moments and to recognize their value. At times, it seems that our society is wired to run at a faster than normal pace. As a result, most of us are guilty of running out of time and running overtime. In the process, we tend to show little regard to the small and meaningful moments in life. I used to observe my grandparents. They were the picture of stillness. It seemed they were never in a rush. They were maximizing life moments in a rocking chair on the front porch. Richard Foster, in his book Celebration of Discipline, makes mention of what he calls, mini solitudes. He says instead of setting aside a long period of time during the day to slow down and to be still, Foster suggests we maximize the little moment we have over that first cup of coffee. We can embrace these moments on our way to work. We can do something as simple as becoming intentional about getting that
moment of solitude at the red light. Just yesterday, I turned off my car radio and challenged myself to refrain from turning it back on or changing the dial. For the next 30 minutes, I enjoyed the moment of driving home distraction free. It was a victory. The next day, I was back to my distracted self. So often, we fail to view life moments from a spiritual perspective. The scripture passage listed at the beginning of this column reminds us that God is responsible for our lives and for the day we are enjoying in the here and now. It is because of His divine authority and provision that we can maximize our moments. Since the day belongs to our God, we are encouraged to respond to the day in a particular manner. Our attitude should be one of rejoicing and gladness. We can rejoice even if our day is not turning out the way we’d planned it. I like to watch children and the excitement they display in anticipation of Christmas day. The calendar becomes their very best friend. On the night before Christmas, there are moments of excitement. On Christmas morning, there is pure joy. As the end of the year draws near, children dread the end of Christmas. They try every conceivable way to maximize the moment, those feelings of excitement and satisfaction. As you go about your day, resist the need to rush. Instead, slow down and look for ways to maximize your moments. It’ll become evident to you and to those around you.

Reacting poorly to offense can lead to church splits and even divorce. It is imperative that we learn how to deal with offense so that we can remain in the will of God. Born Identity The search for identity, the core of who you are, and what makes you uniquely you is an everyday quest for most. There are numerous books published to assist us in self-discovery and finding the meaning for our existence. The quest for understanding identity is real, relevant and significant and often in the back of our minds on a daily basis. Webster defines identity as “who someone is; the name of a person; the qualities, beliefs, etc., that make a particular person or group different from others.” Our identity is what sets us apart from another person. Unfortunately we have chosen our careers, ministry assignments and marital status to define our identity. Society has influenced our behavior as we continue to portray societal beliefs when it comes to success for our lives. Additionally we measure our success against the barometer of another person’s journey. We applaud ourselves for success only when we have achieved the status of what another person has achieved and what we deem as the “bar” for achievement in that arena. Whether it’s your job, career, education, or ministry assignment, we are always using outside information to support our identity. “I am a graduate of _______University.” “I attend _______ church and live in _______ community. All of these commonly used statements provide an update on external factors in our lives. These external factors are wonderful details, however these factors are NOT our identity. Additionally we use “relationship identifiers” to further support our identity. Relationship identifiers are terms and phases that we use to describe our relationship status to another individual. We use such terms as single, divorced, separated, in a serious relationship, in between a serious relationship and others in our dialogue to identify our relationship status. Our relationship status somehow is connected to our identity in our minds. These relationship identifiers are just that, identifiers of our relationships but NOT our identity. These identifiers describe a portion of who I am; they do not define who I am. When I define something I provide the purpose, the nature and the existence. When I describe I give an account in words using the relevant qualities and characteristics of something. For example, I can define shoes 18 August 2015 | Grace&Glory
as an item of clothing that covers the feet especially for walking. I would describe shoes by adding the color, style, brand, etc., of the shoes. When I describe, I speak of relevance according to my experience. When I define I am speaking of purpose and identity. Often we use various descriptions to define our identity. Many of these description are based upon societal beliefs, past hurts, family traditions and others that creep into our lives and slowing begin to turn our heads away from our true BORN – AGAIN IDENTITY. As Christians we have the following assurance. The bible says the following in 2 Corinthians 5:17, Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (King James Version) When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun! (The Living Bible) Additionally we see in Colossians 3:3, For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (English Standard Version) Our identity as Christian Singles is in Christ! We are now provided with a Christ-Identity that supersedes our old nature and our human nature. We do not have to conform to the standards of the world, but we can see ourselves in the WORD of GOD. We are going to take a journey over the next few months understanding our Christ-Identity and how as singles we can learn to not let others and ourselves describe us based upon their view of our relevance but learn how to define ourselves according to the word of God. As we learn our purpose, we are growing in every aspect of preparation for marriage and a completeness that must occur prior to you becoming a marriage partner. Your Born Identity is in Christ!! See you next month!!

First Lady Evangelist Jill A. Johnson Jerusalem Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD
The Alarm has been heard by many Churches & Ministries in Baltimore City. The sound of the roar has been heard. The explosive acts of recent rioting that erupted in our city has highlighted and re-surfaced the cities ongoing conditions of poverty; homelessness; drug addiction; state of discontentment; un-employment; lack of opportunities; decay in our infrastructure; child abuse; idleness amongst our youth; teenage pregnancy; gang population and the list goes on and on. Conditions our leaders have always seen but never addressed. One key element needed if we are to recover is community outreach and support from the churches that are located in these same communities. Generations have been impacted by these unfortunate conditions so the inter-city population continues to grow and bred unanswered and unhealed victims young and old. Although many have escaped by seizing those meager opportunities that seem to come far and few between; others have simply moved into surrounding counties or out of state. Yet in spite of the new beginnings for some and the hasty flight of others, still many of their family members, friends, co-workers and church members still reside under the same conditions they have left behind. While the street names remain the same from North to South Baltimore and from East to West Baltimore, so do the conditions that ravages and destroys the lifeline of nameless residents in the city we all love. Many of those who have gotten out, have returned to the city and now serve in positions at local churches and are committed members of those churches. On any given Sunday many walk past the stranger on the corner; park their cars in the neighborhoods where they worship and seldom if ever lend a helping hand or even know the names of the neighbors in the churches communities. Bravo to the many churches that are “lending a hand” and “making a difference”. But if our city is to enjoy “tangible” and “noticeable” change, we all must do much more, because the need far exceeds helping just a few. Many of us who return or either remain in the city to attend our various churches must realize that our faith community should be committed to be the servants of the Gospel of Christ and not mere church worshippers. It’s time to give back to those our Savior came to seek and to save. Jesus 20 August 2015 | Grace&Glory
himself said in Mark 2:17, “They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance”. Yes we’ve been called to spread the gospel, but what about feeding the hungry, providing programs to help the helpless and outreach services to the disenfranchised. Real preaching and witnessing offers hope to lost and hopeless souls everyday not just on Sunday morning in the confines and safety of our plush and comfortable sanctuaries. Imagine what would happen if we took the church to the streets. This outreach call is a cry to all church members, however the sad reality of the scripture is “many are called but few are chosen”. Why not be “one of the chosen”? I hope this article will shout a roar as loud as the recent unrest did and sound the alarm that NOW is the time; NOW is the moment: NOW is the opportunity to reclaim our city, revive our hope and reconstruct our lives. How can we do it? How about letting our collective pain, outrage and disgust energize the urgency to support and/or initiate outreach initiatives in our churches and our communities. THE TIME IS NOW – Let’s redeem the time for the days are evil. How can you help? Give of your finances, create an outreach ministry at your church, link up with another church and/or lend your time to volunteer at various organizations such as: 1) Adopt-A-Block, 2) 20th Street Hope House, 3) Agape House, 4) Bethel Outreach Center, 5) Fellowship of Lights, 6) Love Center for Women & Children, 7) Marian House, 8) Millennium Health & Human Services and 9) MD Covenant of Ministers Wives, Inc.; just to name a few. One of the core purposes of MDCMW (“MD Covenant of Minister Wives Inc.”) is to be a support ministry to pastors’ wives and ministers’ wives, but an equally important part of our purpose is to provide community outreach. We must become the “authentic” church (the called out Ecclesia) moving, living and conducting ourselves as Christ instructed HIS disciples to go ye therefore into the harvest, forsake yourselves and take up the cross. Together we CAN make a difference; together we CAN revive Baltimore City - the place we all love - the place we all call home.

woman’s perspective
It is hot outside isn’t it? We are in the full swing of summer now ladies. Vacation time is upon us. Children are outside playing in fullness of the hot weather and beaches are full of those seeking fun in the sun. While we enjoy the warmth and beauty of this “time of year” our bodies require extra hydration to stay healthy. This time of year we also notice that attendance to church functions and activities begin to slowly dwindle as people travel and enjoy their summer vacations. Let us be reminded that while we may vacation from work and other responsibilities, we can never take a break from our relationship with God. We need Him daily! “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” John 4:1314. When Jesus talked to the woman at the well drawing water, He illustrated for us the importance of our spiritual relationship. She was there to get water but Jesus uses this moment to teach and point to spiritual water that would never run out like the natural water. Have you ever been outside on a really hot day and been thirsty? Do you remember how great it felt to finally get a cold glass of water to drink? It was so refreshing and invigorating and you could almost feel it go all the way down it was that enjoyable. So it is when the word and the presence of God goes in and touches all of the dry and thirsty places in our lives. There is a void inside each of us that nothing but the presence of God can satisfy. Too often we look other places and attempt to satisfy it with money, sex, success, food, shopping, and so many other things. In the end we continue to the point where we fully realize that only God can quench the thirst that we feel. Once we fully taste of His glory we can never go back to the things that we once looked to for satisfaction. Only God will do it for us.
24 August 2015 | Grace&Glory
Just like anything else that we loved and appreciated at first, once the novelty of our relationship with God wears off we may not spend as much time in His presence or in His word. But if we are not careful before long the same thirst he quenched is back again. It is only with sustained time in His presence that we continue to be satisfied. We must daily run to God for the spiritual drink of water that Jesus was speaking of. The living water that Jesus described is a fountain of water springing up inside of us. The Holy Spirit inside of us helps us to access this fountain of love, joy, peace, etc. found in the very essence of God. Too much time away from God keeps us away from this fountain also. So as we continue our vacations and our beach visits this summer my sisters let’s continue to stay hydrated naturally and spiritually. Naturally drinking plenty of water will help our body temples to stay nourished and cared for. Spiritually, the presence of Tiffany Bethea God and time in His word will keep us Author | Speaker | Mompreneur in alignment and in the center of His Founder & CEO/ The L.I.V.E. to your good health
There are times we do not understand how we are going to make it or what our next steps should be. These times seemed to be few and far between but as I have gotten older in age and in the faith, I realize these tough and often unexplainable experiences happen more often than we would like to believe. No matter how often they occur or how challenging the event may be, we must keep the faith. When adversity and unpleasant surprises come our way, we usually lament and complain which is normal but we must not stay in the valley. The prophet Jeremiah gives us an example of acknowledging our troubles and how our response to them should be in Lamentations 3:2023, “I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh every morning” (NLT). When our faith is tested and we want to give up, instead of caving in to the chaos around us we must learn to dig deep and gather up the strength we have within. One of those strengths is our relationship with God. We can keep our faith as long as we stay connected to the One who is faithful. We have to draw on the faithfulness of God when we feel like giving up and giving in to our frustrations. God has proven faithful in the past and will prove faithful in our current season of testing. Sometimes we become overwhelmed by the successive attacks of the enemy and it’s like we are running on empty. When this happens we must commit ourselves to focusing on who or what remains after we have added up our losses. Focusing on our losses 26 26 August 2015 | Grace&Glory
further drains us at a time when we need to have focused faith. Keeping the faith is not as simple as quoting scripture, talking with a friend or going to the altar for prayer. Walking by faith requires a commitment to the plan of God no matter what the circumstances of life may bring. We have to do the same as the saints described in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (NIV). Keeping the faith is about holding on to our hope no matter what is happening in our lives. Faith is about trusting God to bring you through your stress and bring you to your breakthrough. We can keep the faith when we maintain our confidence in God to supply all of our needs – spiritually, physically, emotionally and relationally. God is able to do what may seem impossible when we believe and not doubt. You must keep the faith because the testing of it will increase your spiritual stamina through perseverance. Increased faith prepares you for the next opportunity or experience that will put your faith to the test. No matter what is going on in your life, remember to keep the faith.

teen connect You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:14-16 Have you ever tried to be someone else just to fit in with a group of people? Have you ever tried to do something impressive, just for the sake of others’ approval? I'm sure many of us would probably say 'yes' to at least one of these questions. But why do we do it? Sometimes it's simply because we feel the need to fit in and be accepted. This is a struggle faced by both Christians and non-Christians. The dangers of trying to fit in Some may ask, “Is it okay for a Christian to become friends with a non-Christian?” The answer is yes. It is important to have fellow Christians in your life, but that does not mean you should limit your friendships to only Christians. Sometimes becoming friends with a non-Christian can test your faith, but in the end that friendship may strengthen it. However, fitting in with a group of people who share different values can sometimes cause problems. We must be careful not to abandon our personal beliefs and values, even though we may sometimes feel that is our only option if we want to be accepted. When Christians become friends with non-Christians, we may not realize what our boundaries are until it is too late. Sometimes, we may be tempted to do something that the Bible says isn't good, like drinking alcohol excessively. While some non-Christians may think this is considered “cool,” God doesn't. Don't be afraid to say 'no' In order for us to make a stand, sometimes we're going to have to use a simple, yet complicated word: No. If saying “No” to your friends means they turn around and reject you, then are they really your friends? True friends do not turn away from you when told “No,” for they accept and respect you for your decisions and for who you are. The key to really fitting in is to be you. How will you know if someone is a real friend if they don’t really know you? We are most comfortable when we are ourselves, not pretending to be somebody else. 28 August August 2015 2015 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 28
By Yvette Fries (www.fervr.net) Setting boundaries So what should our boundaries be as Christians? Here are some things to think about when you work out your boundaries: • You should never have to pretend you are someone else just for approval. • Make sure what you say and do is still honoring God. We are called to be obedient children of God, not to just follow as we feel. • If you are ever led astray, don't be afraid to say “No.” • In the end, it’s not what others think about us, but what we think about ourselves and most importantly what God thinks about us that matters. • God has planned what is best, even though we may not know what it is, and sometimes we may feel left out. Working on good friendships Friendship is one of the most important things in our lives. But friendship does not come about by pretending to be someone else or by impressing others for their acceptance. It comes by being ourselves, letting God shine through our being, and through honesty to both others and ourselves. And once we find real friends who accept us for who we are, the fellowship begins; in other words, spending time together. Fellowship with one another is important, especially as Christians, because it strengthens bonds and helps you be accountable to each other. How far is too far? So how far should we go to fit in? Not far at all. Sometimes, being the “outsider” is the right thing to be, even though it hurts. The acceptance that should matter to us is God's - and He is a very loving and accepting God! God does not want us to fit into the world, to become more like it. He wants us to be more like Him. The world we live in is temporary. All that we hold important on earth will eventually pass away. For this reason we shouldn’t let the rejection and acceptance of others interfere with God’s purpose for our being. As Christians, we are not to conform to the pleasures of this world, but to live in the world, holding out hope for those without Jesus Christ, shining as a light in the darkness.

body basics
By FitSugar (www.shape.com) Beat the heat and hit your workout hard with these summertime tips. Warmer, sunny days are finally here, but after exercising in cooler Spring temps, hot and humid 80-degree days can feel overwhelming. Running, biking, hiking, even walking feels harder in the heat, so here are some tips to help you get through your Summer workouts. Be flexible about when you work out: Become obsessed with checking the weather, and find out when temps are going to be the lowest that day. Sometimes it's early in the morning, and sometimes late in the evening, so you'll need to rearrange your schedule to fit in exercise during the coolest time of day. A plus about morning workouts is many of your neighbors might be watering their lawns, so you can run through their sprinklers to stay even cooler. • Invest in some wicking clothes: Lightweight, breathable, wicking clothes are a must. They'll pull moisture away from your skin, so you really do feel cooler. Wearing a hat to keep the hot sun off your head and face also helps. • Take a cold shower: I know it seems a little odd to shower before a workout, but the cold water will cool you down. Leave your hair wet and pop it in a bun, so when you head outside water dripping down your face and neck will feel so refreshing. If you have short hair, carry a water bottle with you and squeeze a little on top of your head whenever you need a little cooling boost. • Change up the type of workout to fit the temps: On super 32 August 2015 | Grace&Glory
hot and humid days, choose cooler cardio activities like biking in the wind or swimming in cold water. • Exercise in cooler places: Hit the trails in shady woods or along a breezy beach shoreline. It can be 10 or more degrees cooler than the sunny streets in your neighborhood. • Exercise in the rain: It's so exhilarating to feel a little sprinkle on your skin while out for a run or bike ride. If it's thundering and lightening, head home quick; you don't want to be out running in an electrical storm. • Shorten or split up your workouts: Summertime isn't the best time to push yourself, so if you can only handle 10 minutes at a time, do what you can, or exercise twice in one day. • Slow down your pace: If you're set on getting in a 30-minute workout, move with less intensity or do intervals to avoid overheating. Remember it's OK to take breaks too. • Head indoors: Now is a good time to take advantage of a monthly membership at an air-conditioned gym. Can't afford it? Burn calories by following along with fitness DVDs, jumping rope, running up and down your stairs, or doing strength training routines at home. If you need to get out, speed walk in the mall.
• Drink water all day, not just before or after your workout: Staying hydrated will help prevent some of the symptoms you may experience from exercising in heat such as dizziness, stomach cramps, and headaches. During your run, sip four to eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes.

word of encouragement I don’t know about you, but I have been and purpose in my heart to continue to be a trailblazer. And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour. [Matthew 9:20-22 -- (NKJV)] This is what trailblazers do. They take the risk, chance, ready to defy the odds, standing ready and decisive about dealing with the outcome of the circumstances. Sometimes it takes doing all you know how to do to get you to the place where you know that you have to do something different and here it is you have become known as a trailblazer. A trailblazer is a person who makes, does, or discovers something new and makes it acceptable or popular. Possibly you may have been going to all the hospitals and doctors you could afford; you may have lost everything [including money, the pitiful onlookers, those who doubted you, and those who knew for a fact (their fact) that you were not going to make it]. Meanwhile you are in the place of making up in your mind that if you believe in Jesus, you can become whole and be known as a trailblazer. So it was with the woman who had an issue of blood for twelve years. Faith was required by the woman; she tried everything she knew to try and come to the place where she visualized to herself how she was going to be healed. Jesus had healed many others in so many different ways, but this woman visualized how she was going to make it happen for her. Nowhere before was it recorded in the New Testament that anyone had touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and was healed. Therefore according to the definition of the word “trailblazer” -- speaking to herself brought her to the place of being a trailblazer. Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.] A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. [John 5:2-9 – (NASB)] The trail follower was at the pool hoping that someone was going to help him. In a place where everyone was helping themselves this man told Jesus, “I have no one to take me into the pool”. Nowhere in the Bible was his rationale given – as to why he was waiting on someone. However, we see Jesus telling the man to pick up his pallet and walk – which he did. The woman was a trailblazer and the man for thirty years looked to others. Trailblazers start stuff for others to follow. Today, right now, God is looking for trailblazers. Those who would allow Him to use their mouths, hands, ears, etc. to make major changes in the earth today. Would you be the one that God can tell go build transitional homes for widowers and orphans? Would you be the one that God can use your ears to listen to the sound of the Kingdom manifesting in a big way in the earth? Would you be the one that God can depend upon to use the resources that He has or will give to you to build a warehouse full of different things to meet the need of His people on earth? Would you, would you, would you become a trailblazer for God and effect change in the earth? I encourage you today to become a trailblazer for God. There is so much in store for those who would become trailblazers. You become the upfront persons, the one on the cutting edge for God. Prayer: Father, in the Matchless Name of Jesus, I ask Your forgiveness for not becoming a trailblazer before. I don’t want to wait for thirty-eight years before I begin to do what You have ordained for me to accomplish for You before the foundation of the world. Help me Father, to seek Your face – ready willing and able to be a trailblazer for you, amen.

man talk
It seems that each month has a different focus. African American History is celebrated throughout the month of February and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Even this month, August, has special emphases. Not only is it National Family Fun Month, but the third week is National Friendship Week, and August 27th is Just Because Day. While it isn’t wrong to highlight any of these events, let us never forget this one universal truth—regardless of the day, week or month—that is captured in the first question and response of the Westminster Catechism: What is the chief and highest end of man? Man’s chief and highest end is to glorify God, and to fully enjoy him forever. Let’s look closer… The Book of Job chronicles the life of a wealthy and righteous man (Job 1: 1-3). Job, however, was not exempt from trials and tribulation, problems and persecution. The enemy, having dialogued with God about Job (Job 1: 6-12), attacked virtually every aspect of his life (Job 1: 14-19). But although we know that all things work together for the good of those who love God and have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8: 28), why did God allow Job to experience such devastating circumstances? Brothers, as we live each day, remember these truths: IT IS NEVER ABOUT YOU and GOD GLORIFIES HIMSELF. POINT NUMBER ONE: IT IS NEVER ABOUT YOU Everything that God does and everything that He allows is ultimately about Himself; for this reason, everything that we experience in life— whether good or bad—is not about you or me. Said another way, when The Lord blesses us with jobs, homes, or other material possessions, these things are not for us to hoard to ourselves. Instead, we must recognize that we have been blessed only to be a blessing. The extra money in our pockets is not meant for our selfish gain but to help the young brother trying to pay his way through college. Perhaps the extra car in your driveway is to help the young father who needs it to help make ends meet for his family. Even when The Lord delivers us from difficult situations, these seemingly bad times weren’t for us either. When sickness and disease tried to take your life, that wasn’t for you but the person that you would meet years later who needs to hear that God is able to do the impossible! When The Lord helped you to finish school, that wasn’t for you to boast of your own intelligence but God’s way of preparing you to encourage young brothers who find themselves wondering if they will ever succeed in life. Every dark and lonely night was not meant to frustrate or discourage you but rather The Lord

developing you to testify of His faithfulness. Brothers, be encouraged. Regardless of how difficult the day, know that His plan is far greater than your temporary circumstances. POINT NUMBER TWO: HE GLORIFIES HIMSELF Yes, being a blessing to someone in need and encouraging those who are currently facing various challenges is both an honor and a privilege. But ultimately, the purpose for everything in this life is to bring glory to God. In other words, because God is in control, He intentionally orchestrates our lives and orders our steps to glorify Himself. Returning to Job, despite all that he endured—losing his wealth and even his children—he remained faithful to God. In other words, in spite of his circumstances, Job demonstrated that The Lord is [always] good and worthy to be praised (Job 1: 20-22)! Sure, it’s much easier to lift our hands, shout, sing, clap, and dance because everything is going well, but can we do these things in spite of distressing disappointment and significant setbacks? Through the life of Job, it was God’s ultimate purpose to glorify Himself. No doubt, our most powerful and effectual testimonies are inextricably connected to our ability to remain faithful to God during our most difficult seasons, especially those that are publicized for all to see. Brothers, what would you do if Job’s circumstances were your own? Although many of us have heard sermons about God giving Job double for his trouble as greater was restored to him in his latter years(Job 42: 10-12), what if this did not happen? Regardless of the outcome for Job, everything that he experienced was about God making himself the center of attention for all to see. Brothers, during this final month of enjoying summer vacations and time spent resting and relaxing with family and friends, consider this: because God exists to glorify God, what are you doing to glorify God?
