It is now a brand new year and many of us are looking toward this New Year with a fresh new hope! What is hope? Well, the modern idea of hope is “to wish for, to expect, but without certainty of the fulfillment; to desire very much, but with no real assurance of getting your desire.” In Scripture, according to the Hebrew and Greek words translated by the word “hope”, hope is an indication of certainty. “Hope” in Scripture means “a strong and confident expectation.” Hope is akin to trust. For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it (Romans 8:24-25). Here is what hope can do for you... (1) It changes how we see ourselves. It changes us into pilgrim persons, people who see this life as a temporary sojourn. (2) It changes what we value. Hope, if biblical, makes us heavenly minded rather than earthly minded. (Matthew 6:19-21) (3) It affects what we do with our lives – our talents, time, and treasures. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). (4) It gives us joy and peace. Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13) (5) It gives us protection. Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His loving kindness (Psalm 33:18).
(6) It gives us strength, courage, boldness. Be strong, and let your heart take courage, All you who hope in the LORD (Psalm 31:24). (7) It gives us expectation. Wait and hope for and expect the Lord; be brave and of good courage and let your heart be stout and enduring. Yes, wait for and hope for and expect the Lord (Psalm 27:14). (8) It gives us confidence in ministry. For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers (I Timothy 4:10). God is called “the God of Hope.” This means He is the source of all real hope. If we are going to have hope (confident expectation), it must come from Him for He alone has the power to give it. Hope gives us power to live courageously, to be all God has called us to be in Christ. My soul, waits in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him (Psalm 62:5). This New Year my prayer for you is that no matter what happens in the next coming months, that you will never lose your hope for the future. That Hope that depends on the Word of God. That Hope that depends on knowing and resting in God’s Grace. Happy New Year!

Dr. Kenneth O. Robinson DreamLife Worship Center RANDALLSTOWN, MD G&G: Dr. Robinson, welcome back to Grace & Glory, it has been eight years since you were featured as the cover story of the month. This is such a great opportunity to feature you the first month of a brand New Year. I understand this is an exciting time for you and your ministry, and we are excited to hear about it. In one sentence would you share with us what it feels like to be you right now, are you in a good place in your life? Dr. Robinson: He has given me a second wind in life and I believe my best years are ahead of me. G&G: Dr. Robinson, since we talked with you last much has happened in your life, particularly going through a divorce and getting remarried. What impact did the divorce have on your ministry and its members? And while recovering from divorce what challenges did you face in the ministry? Dr. Robinson: Obviously a divorce in itself is devastating, especially as a Spiritual Leader and Pastor. I still bear
the pain of my loss, however God has been faithful. As a church, it tested the validity of our ministry. I often say “we are a miracle church” because we survived something that many churches don’t survive. There were many who left, many who stayed and many who have come. Those who are at DreamLife witness the grace of God working in a man who has human flaws, weaknesses and shortcomings like them but still chooses to trust God through it all. G&G: Dr. Robinson, with the divorce rate higher than it’s ever been it has been said that one of the tactics of the enemy (Satan) is to destroy the family unit. Do you still believe in family and the sanctity of marriage? Dr. Robinson: Of course I do. Anyone that has known Kenneth Robinson knows how much I love marriage and family. My experience has only created a deeper passion and appreciation for marriage and family.

The vision of DreamLife will always coincide with my financial assignment because that is what I am anointed to do. However, DreamLife will minister to the whole man; spirit, soul and body with the gospel of the kingdom of God.
G&G: Dr. Robinson, one of the things the ministry of the Restoring Life International Church was known for was restoration and ‘restoring lives’. Q&A Continued from page 9 in ministry, how has church ministry changed since when you first started? Why is it so hard to get people to come to church and stay with church? Dr. Robinson: I started over 20 years ago and many things have changed over the years. The major change has been in the culture. The change of the culture has challenged the church to stay relevant in its ministry, at the same time hold true to the truths of the gospel. The culture has more distractions and demands on an individual’s time than it did in previous times. G&G: Dr. Robinson, one of the biggest changes in ministry is the role technology has played. Now you can watch an entire worship service and pay your tithes and offerings via mobile devices without ever leaving the comforts of your home. Do you believe that technology and the church is beneficial even though it challenges the structure of corporate worship? Dr. Robinson: Technology has changed the way we all do ministry, from daily office work to streaming services online. Hi-Tech ministry can be very beneficial, but must be monitored with Hi-Touch. You have to make sure that you don’t lose the personal touch with one another while advancing in technology. 10 January January 2015 2015 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 10
G&G: Dr. Robinson, social injustice has been in the headlines for several months now following the tragedy in Ferguson, Missouri. There have been riots, protests, marches, and a few weeks ago many churches joined in by dedicating their services to the issue ‘Black Lives Matter”. What do you believe the church’s role should be as it relates to social issues and in specific community issues? Dr. Robinson: The church’s role has been clearly defined by Christ when He said “Ye are the Light of the World”. Our role is to bring light to the darkness places of society. We must have a righteous presence not just protesting in the streets but also in the corporate board rooms, political assemblies and economic centers where the decisions and power really lies. G&G: Dr. Robinson, it is always a pleasure talking with you, and we cannot let you go without asking you to leave us with a word for the New Year. Dr. Robinson: I believe that 2014 has been a year of transition for many. Also, it has been a year of great deliverance. I believe that 2015 will be a time of a new direction and a fresh wind of the Holy Spirit in many lives. Many will enter into a place of rest in God and experience the end of years of difficulty, pain and struggle. DreamLife Worship Center construction

Walking in the Light Happy New Year: Our Greatest Resource Lies Within by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
I generally don’t make big New Year’s resolutions. The same thing I hope for at the first of the year pretty much remains the same at the end of the year: peace and joy for everyone. I am thankful that I was raised in a home where peace and joy were esteemed as the spiritual nourishment of everyday life. As we embark upon a new year, my wish is that this be true for you as well. In Baltimore, we have our challenges, but I firmly believe that together we can prevail against them and overcome any adversity. You may have heard the inspiring story of Helen Keller. Although she was blind, deaf and mute, she rose to these challenges to become one of the 20th century’s leading humanitarians. Helen Keller once said, “Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” I’ve always loved that quote, and I firmly believe that it’s true. Our greatest potential does not depend on what others say or believe about us—but on what’s inside of us. Some of the great challenges that face our city could be resolved in short order if a majority of us resolve to keep happy and appreciate the fact that life matters. Like you, I’ve read the many signs that read, “Black Lives Matter,” and I agree—they do. And Brown lives matter. White lives matter. Life matters. Violence takes a terrible toll on the family of a victim, and the impact has a ripple effect in our community—and our entire city. In the wake of a senseless loss of life due to violence, we are all tested. We mourn the loss of life and the clear affront against humanity. The true cost isn’t just the loved one lying motionless in a coffin, but in the hearts and minds of our communities. Hope fades. Peace and joy aren’t just words: they are vital building blocks of healthy communities. They help us find the inner strength to overcome adversity—a powerful and contagious power that our children can see in our eyes and in our smiles. I don’t know whether or not you’ve made any New Year’s resolutions. However, I pray that you join with me and keep peace and joy in your hearts to make 2015 a happy and healthy new year. Individually we cannot do it all, but collectively, we ALL can do it! In Baltimore and in cities throughout this nation, if we stand together, no weapon formed against us shall prosper. education digest
If you are fortunate enough to read the words of this column, it means God has granted you the privilege of witnessing a brand new year. I believe a New Year has a way of triggering within each of us the need to develop a new life-plan. Here’s what I mean. We have made plans and set goals for the year. But instead of calling it a plan, we may refer to this new commitment as a resolution. It’s possible that by now most of us have taken inventory of the people, places and things in our lives that matter most. We have revised our life-plan and now look forward to putting it into action. This can seem like the easiest part of our journey but at times is the hardest. As we contemplate what to change and to what degree, it is easy to confuse our plan with God’s. Most of us would have to admit, this is not our first lifeplan. In fact, it may be slightly different from the one we sought to implement last year and the one before. I believe that so often we try and implement our plan without first seeking God’s guidance. It is during those experiences that we find ourselves constantly modifying the plan. This is something I have experienced. I consider myself among those who sometime find it a challenge to come up with a long-range life-plan and then to stick with it. It may be because I failed to get God’s full approval. This is why I can learned to embrace the earlier scripture passage which states this: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give 14 January 2015 | Grace&Glory
you hope and a future.”(Jeremiah 29:11). I believe you would agree that some of us find it difficult to live out the truth of this statement, namely that it’s the Lord’s plan and not ours. This is why we must strive to implement the Lord’s plan because it is written both in our hearts and minds. I am a witness. I am prospering. I am safe in His care. I have hope. I also have a future. In my attempt to stick to the Lord’s plan for me, I must realize that my heavenly father has the greater plan and He knows what’s best for my life. I believe that it is in our trusting that we are also able to share his plan with others. It is in our sharing that we learn to focus less on ourselves and more on God’s plan for our lives. This is why I’m drawn to yet another scripture passage. It is this: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”(Ephesians 2:10). Today, right now, may be the best time to review, revise and even discard our original New Year’s lifeplan for God’s instead. Dr. Tim Tooten, Sr. is an EmmyAward winning education reporter for WBAL-TV (NBC) in Baltimore, Maryland. M ary's Legacy
woman’s perspective
This time of year is filled with overcrowded stores, anxious shoppers pushing and shoving and the pressure to impress loved ones with gifts. But the real gift we celebrate is the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. Without His birth there would not be as much to be joyous about; but because He was born our entire lives were changed. His life was an example to each of us on how we should live each day. He was an example of how we should treat the outcasts, the unloved and the forgotten. He showed us His father’s power with His miracles and he revealed how to manifest the kingdom of God on earth. Have you ever thought about how the story would be different if his mother Mary was not who she was? When the angel appeared to her and revealed the awesome assignment that would be hers we saw the essence of her character in her response. “Be it unto me according to thy word.” Luke 1:38. Her heart of obedience revealed her unconditional trust in God and her love for Him. It was with this trust and love that she not only conceived Jesus but also reared him from infancy to adulthood. In her home was the place He saw the first earthly example of love for God. In her arms was where He felt God’s love through her embrace. Mary being the woman she was allowed her to nurture her son into his purpose. This is her legacy as a mother and a woman of God. What will your legacy be? How do those who have encountered you remember you? Is it for godly character like Mary? From just one conversation we could perceive her heart for God and the strength of her character. Despite the obvious reasons she had to be afraid and unsure, she willing yielded to the plan of God. Because of her obedience generations to come were blessed. Can you imagine the courage it took to walk out the path that God had ordained for her? She would have to endure the naysayers and all those who would misunderstand her situation. She would have to face the natural changes in her body and nurture her relationship with God all while battling fear. She was chosen because God knew that she was in a posture to handle this most precious assignment. I reflect on Mary’s courage and I strive every day to exhibit this strength of character. Like Mary, I want to be completely available for God’s use; not only the assignments, but the ones that no one else sees as glorious. Every day I work to keep my heart in a posture so that no matter what God speaks I yield without resistance. I see Mary’s attitude as a breathtaking reflection of how each of us should be. Because Mary was who she was, she raised Jesus and didn’t hinder Him being who He was created to be. His purpose was dependent on her obedience. Who is dependent on you being the godly woman you are called to be in order for them to be the person they are called to be? As women of God everywhere we go there are people watching our lives. For some of them we are the only example of godliness they may see. For some of us it is our own children watching and for others loved ones around us who are learning about God directly from our actions. We must make a conscious effort to show them an example of His love through our courageous obedience. I am grateful for Mary’s legacy. Her life and example reminds me to be the godly woman I was created to be, not only for myself, but for those who have been divinely connected to me. In order that they can be who they should be, I must walk out who I am called to be. When God speaks an instruction I must yield, even if I am afraid or don’t fully understand. When He says speak I must speak boldly. When He says move I must go in His timing. I must demonstrate His character everywhere I go. We never know whose life is impacted by ours. I want to leave a legacy that helps and not hinders people from becoming who God would have them to be.

new year's greetings
Dr. A. C. D. Vaughn, Senior Pastor Sharon Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “The same God who has been with you all these years will bless you as you come into a new year. Remember He says seek first The Kingdom of God and all other things will be added unto you.” Pastor Shawn Bell Greater Paradise Christian Center, Baltimore, MD “God is calling his people to a season of intercession and prayer. God is calling his people back. "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2Chronicles 7:14 KJV) It will be a phenomenal year and the year of the conqueror. "And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.” (Revelation 6:2) Dr. Karen S. Bethea, Senior Pastor Set the Captives Free Outreach Center “A New Year brings with it the hope of a brighter future. As one year ends we look expectantly to what will unfold in the next. For the believer, it is a joy that this expectation is not just some passing feeling or uncertain hype. No instead we have a sure word of prophecy from the Word of the Lord that causes us to look to the future with full confidence! As we go into 2015 hold fast to the promises of God, keep the faith, and remember, “Cast not away therefore your

confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.” (Hebrews 10:35-36) HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Dr. Vanessa D. Booth, Pastor Lamb of Life Baptist Church, Baltimore MD “Last year we experienced magnificent wonders in the realms of space, the technology in our hands keeps us connected like never before, we bid a sad farewell to some of the world's greatest visionaries, trials and tribulations caught the world's attention, and it’s been a year of bad decisions from America’s legal system that is still unjust for many black Americans. In 2015, we may continue to face a number of diverse and significant challenges, and we may not understand the how’s and why’s of it all, but there is one thing we must remember– God is still on the throne. While we may not agree or understand what is happening, God has complete control of everything. As Christians, we must trust God when things don’t work out the way we would have wanted, and we must believe there is a greater plan for our future. If we put TRUST at the forefront of our lives, and we view every trouble, every sorrow, every joy, and every victory, with the unshakable conviction that God is totally trustworthy the focus can be taken off our doubts and placed on the promised Word from God that all things work together for good (Romans 8:28).” Bishop Dwayne C. Debnam, Pastor Morning Star Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “Once again God has granted us the grace to see another year!!! Let’s maximize the gift by committing ourselves to lifting him up and helping men and woman BUILD AND REBUILD THEIR LIVES… This is the year of YOUR BREAKTHROUGH!!!!”
new year's greetings Bishop Ralph L. Dennis Kingdom Worship Center, Baltimore, MD “In the New Year, I would like to encourage those who carry the burden of preaching sound doctrine to focus on prophetic hermeneutics, and do not settle with interpreting Scripture based on how it was taught to us! The "come up here" summons, issued to John on Patmos, is being issues in 2015. Holy Spirit wants to show us something new and different that speaks to these times. He wants to speak something new. Remaining comfortable with aged interpretations and viewpoints prevents relevance! Holy Spirit has issued a warrant of arrest for outdated understandings. Revelation is progressive; it's time to upgrade. "Come up here"; ASCEND!” Rev. Errol Gilliard, Pastor Greater Harvest Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “2015 is the year of destiny. Change Your Direction To Claim Your Destiny." (Deuteronomy 1: 6-7) Dr. Donte’ L. Hickman, Pastor Southern Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “God has blessed us again with the wonderful opportunity to move forward. The past is behind us and God's promises are before us. My prayer for all of us is that we would let go and let God handle it. Have a blessed New Year!” Bishop Shirley Holloway, Pastor & Founder The House of Help City of Hope, Washington, DC “2015. Triple grace has guided us. To the Body of Christ we are at our divine appointment in our Kingdom assignments for the Kairos movement.” Dr. Jermaine N. Johnson, Senior Pastor Word of Life Christian Community Church, Baltimore, MD “But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.” I Peter 5:10 Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed. We’ve had our share of obstacles, but the glory resides in that we’ve overcome them. We’ve overcome death, debt, depression. We are victorious due to our connection. In 2015 “Increase your God activity” and stay connected!”
Pastor Jekia Ledbetter Victory Ministries of Christ, Baltimore, MD “Grace and Peace to all the Grace & Glory Readers, I am excited that according to Deuteronomy 15:2 that this is the year of the ‘Release’. I decree and declare that if you trust God with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding that this shall be the year of a total Release in your life! Happy New Year from Victory Ministries of Christ to you! May you become the Lender and not the borrower, SHABA!” Dr. Timothy Loftin, Pastor Pleasant Rock Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “To God be the Glory for another year! Praise God for the many blessings of 2014, and thank God for another new beginning in 2015, another chance to serve Him, another chance to exalt Him, another chance to adore Him, another chance to love Him, another chance to draw closer to Him, and another chance to witness to others about His love, His goodness, His mercy and His grace. We know that if we just keep holding on to God's unchanging hand, He will take care of every situation and circumstance that comes in life. Continue to "look to the hills from whence cometh your help for all help comes from the Lord." Finally, know that God loves you; let us love one another. new year's greetings be glad with exceeding joy! So receive great Joy for you & your family this year!” Dr. Dana E. Neal, Baltimore, MD “Kingdom Greetings and Happy New Year! This is an exciting year for the body of Christ! We are in the year of triple fold favor because it is the year of triple fold grace! The number five represents grace and grace is the unmerited favor of God which is multiplied unto us over and over and over again in 2015. God’s favor is going to take us where the lack of money and the absence of man cannot. Just stay faithful and obedient to Him and you shall eat the good of the land. Blessings and God’s Favor upon Your Life in 2015!” Dr. Tim Tooten, Pastor Harvest Christian Ministries, Baltimore, MD “I want to take this time to encourage as well as to challenge you to become more committed to Jesus Christ in the coming year. Instead of feeling the pressure of making resolutions, make it your mission to continue spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. I believe that it is in your spreading that you’ll win a lost soul to the Lord.” Dr. Lisa Weah, Pastor New Bethlehem Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “This New Year brings new challenges, but it likewise, offers new opportunities - opportunities to live, give, and grow in God's grace. How do we Maximize these opportunities? The writer of Hebrews says, “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 121b NIV). So let's catch the fresh wind of our new season, and capture the possibilities of a fresh start!”

Dr. Leah E. White, Pastor Greater Faith Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “2015 The Appointed Time For Miracles. In 2014 there were some things that were left undone, unconfirmed and dreams unfulfilled. However, God is giving us new opportunity in 2015. This New Year will be marked with NEW PASSION, NEW OPPORTUNITIES, AND NEW BLESSINGS. We will be given new opportunities to believe, to receive and to conceive. I believe that God is going to put new visions, new aspirations and new hopes within our spirits that will cause each day to be fulfilling. With faith in God, we will pursue our passions and dreams, some of which we have only spoken of. Our passions will cause us to experience the SEASON OF MIRACLES. During this season we will come to see the presence of God in our lives, the manifestation of His grace upon us and mercy that will far exceed our dreams. 2015 will be THE SEASON OF MIRACLES. I am thoroughly convinced that all of this is a part of God's plan for our lives. Therefore, we must operate in the authority of His promise.” Habakkuk 2:3 (KJV) 3 For the vision [is] yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Bishop Anthony Williams, Pastor First Abyssinia Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD “First Abyssinia Baptist Church theme for the year of 2015 is "Fanning the Flames of Revival and Evangelism" (II Kings 2:1-14), because to effectively do ministry the fire has to be burning. To inspire the fire which will ignite in souls getting saved and the church staying spiritually motivated will be based on gospel messages of faith, prayer and power. Words set the course for life because they speak life. II Kings 2:1-14 sets the flame for a great work as Elijah is taken up in a chariot of fire with horses of fire. Elisha receives a mantle that would change his life and ministry forever. As the New Year ushers in, greater things are about to happen for God's people as we fan the flames of spiritual hunger with the outpouring of spiritual gifts. The flames will keep us empowered to continue the race we have already begun and add to the foundation that has been already laid.” Grant Williams III, Superintendent of Operations for the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Maryland "Just as the grass is greener where you water it; so too is life more abundant when you live it with purpose and love for others. One Love. What matters most; is what happens next."

to your good health
We have experienced much heartache over the years. Whether it is the loss of a loved one, a marriage, a job or a health challenge among many other sources of distress and disappointment. Also, the losses of trust in our government, law enforcement, our employers and yes even the church, have also impacted our personal interactions and belief in others. We have become a nation of cynical people who look over our shoulders and have a revenge mindset. The mixed motives of others have turned us into a community of bitter people. Thankfully we do not have to stay in a state of mistrust and despair. Our circumstances whether we chose them or not, cannot and will not continue to hold us back. We are reminded that what we say and do can turn things around in our favor. The power of life and death is in the tongue. In Psalm 107, the Psalmist gives us the formula we need to right the wrongs, bring justice to the oppressed, freedom to those in captivity to their issues, habits and yes, sins. “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress; He sent out His word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction.” We need to 24 January 2015 | Grace&Glory
humble ourselves and pray. The healing we need, our families need and our communities and world needs can only come to pass with God’s help. For too long, we have edged Jesus out of the equation of our lives and have bought into the gospel of success over the Gospel of Christ. Our worldview has become skewed by materialism, selfishness and the need to be right at any cost. We have seen how our methods have only lead to more madness and not a solution. In order for the healing to begin in our land we need to call on the Lord and begin to live on His word and not our works. Only Jesus can deliver us from the destruction of our current context of wars, rumors of wars, poverty, unfair police practices, deadly diseases Carla J. Debnam, MS, LCPC and ourselves. single life
Happy New Year! The beginning of a new year always marks a time of a new beginning for many. Some take this time of year to set new goals in their personal life, business life or other areas. The beginning of a year is often a time of reflection, goal setting, dreaming and planning for the future. “No, dear brothers, I am still not all I should be, but I am bringing all my energies to bear on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God is calling us up to heaven because of what Christ Jesus did for us.” Philippians 3:13-14 The Living Bible In order to embrace a NEW YOU will require that we forget the past. When we think of forgetting the past, we automatically think about all the negative things that have occurred in our lives. We quickly rejoice with the thought of forgetting things that have caused us pain or sorrow. Those painful situations are at the top of our “to do list” when it comes to forgetting the past. What if God requires us to include our past successes and our cherished achievements in the “forgetting the past” list? Can we forget the past personal successes, business achievements, accolades and significant milestones? Are we eager to place those “good things” behind us and focus on the prize that Christ as set before us? Sometimes as singles we carry baggage from relationship to relationship only unpacking a few items and carrying our cherished items with us into our next relationship. We may not recognize that what has been familiar and comfortable to us is a possible hindrance for our new season. It’s like carrying a thin jacket into a cold winter season because we like the way this thin jacket looks on us or we enjoy the comfort of how this jacket covers us. It’s a great jacket but no longer appropriate for the new season that we have entered. Yet, we wear it and now we are unable or unavailable to embrace the new heavier more appropriate coat. Letting go of past successes and accomplishments are difficult because we don’t see them as something that requires that we must forget and we embrace them as a part of who we have grown to become. Becoming the person that God has designed may include letting go of your past successes. It may include welcoming the new as you lay down the past achievements. Can you open your heart and your life to new experiences and let go of the old wonderful days of your past. Success is wonderful, but if it is going to hinder your growth you may have to make a major decision to let it go so that you can continue to move forward toward what God has planned for you. This 26 January 2015 | Grace&Glory
goal can be a business opportunity, ministry, marriage but it will require that you forget the past. How do I forget the “good” past? 1. Recognize that God has a greater plan. While we say this often, we actually believe that our plan is the better plan. We think our goals are God’s goals. This can be prevented by seeking God on a regular basis for His plan. This allows us to make sure that we have not taken a different path than His plan. 2. Celebrate your successes but don’t define yourself by these results. Enjoy the joy of the success without making your identity revolve around the success. If you get a promotion on your job, enjoy the success without allowing the promotion to become how you identify yourself. 3. Be open to new hobbies, adventures. When we are open to new adventures in life, it allows us to be vulnerable as we are learning a new concept. Our ability to be vulnerable opens us to “new” and shifts us from what we know to what we don’t know. 4. Learn to laugh at yourself. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Enjoy who you are and learn to laugh at your failures and your successes. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. Luke 5:4-7 NIV When we submit our lives to God allowing Him to guide us, we are now open to embracing the “new” person that He is trying to create. Like the disciples, this will require that we trust God. We recognize that God is trying to position us for something greater than our past and we must not allow what we think to dominate what He is doing in the NEW YEAR. • Encourage discussions about donation in your congregation now. It is much easier for families to understand how donation works and make a decision to donate before they face a crisis. • Find out who in your community has been affected by donation. Lead prayer to remember those families who suffered loss through death, yet offered life through organ and tissue donation. • Lead by example: Let your congregation know you are a registered donor and discuss the decision with your family. • Distribute donation information in your community through bulletins and newsletters. The Living Legacy Foundation will gladly provide information for you. • Invite a donor family member or transplant recipient to speak during a service, youth class, Bible study or adult ministry group. • Invite The Living Legacy Foundation to speak at your church. finances
For many people, the New Year signifies a fresh start. The mental and spiritual batteries are recharged after the drain of the hectic holidays. We’re more optimistic. We’re open to new possibilities, new strategies, and new aspirations. Here are eight personal finance tips from the Financial Planning Association that can help you toward a happier new year. 1. Set clear goals. We don’t mean only financial goals such as building a larger retirement account or getting out of debt. We’re talking any goal you’d like to work toward or achieve in the New Year that has financial consequences. For example, perhaps you want to work less so you can spend more time with your family, or you want to change to a career that excites you more but that pays less. How can you afford such goals? That’s why setting specific, realistic goals—and writing them down—is such a powerful financial tool for realizing them. It not only clarifies what you have to do financially to achieve the goals, it motivates you to achieve them within a specific timeline. Saving for something provides much more financial incentive than merely following the standard advice to save 10 or 15 percent of your monthly pay. 2. Discuss the goals with your family. Include your spouse, your children if they’re old enough, or other loved ones who might be affected by your goals. They can help you clarify the goals, motivate you to make changes, and aid in their achievement. 3. Create a financial plan. All financial actions (or inactions) affect other financial actions. If your financial left hand doesn’t know what your financial right hand is doing, one may undermine the other. For example, lack of adequate insurance for home, health, and other aspects of your life could decimate your retirement savings and investments if something goes wrong. You may need professional advice at this stage, or you may feel you can do it yourself. Regardless, the key is creating and following through with the plan. 4. Review the last year. Life is continually in flux and change can have a profound impact on your financial plans. For example, during the past year did you get married or divorced, have a child, suffer a death in the
30 January 2015 | Grace&Glory
family, change jobs, or change short-term or long-term goals? 5. Establish a spending plan. Achieving financial goals is built on a single principle: spend less money than you earn. And it’s difficult to spend less than you earn if you don’t know where your money is coming from and going to. First, list your regular, dependable sources of income. Then track how much and where you spend money every month (including cash). Average out on a monthly basis periodic expenses such as car insurance or property taxes. Subtract monthly expenses from monthly income and…do you have a surplus, are you in balance, or are you spending more than you’re taking in? Are you skimming 5 or 10 percent right off the top of your income for savings and investing? If not, what expenses can you reduce or income increase in order to save toward goals? Automate savings to make it less painful. 6. Reduce debt. Resolve to lower debt this year. As interest rates rise, every dollar of accumulated debt becomes a heavier and heavier drag on your entire financial life. 7. Diversify your household assets. You know not to put all of your investment eggs in one basket (such as high-tech stocks). Apply this advice to your overall financial household. If possible, working spouses should be employed in separate companies in separate industries in order to reduce the possibility of both of you losing jobs at the same time. Go easy on company stock and industry stock where you work. If your employer or the industry suffers hard times, you might lose not only your job but also much of the value of your investments. Avoid investing in a single business or industry that dominates the economy where you live. If the company or industry suffers, so might your home values along with your investments. 8. Educate yourself financially. The more you understand about finances—from budgeting to investments to insurance—the more confident and motivated you’ll be to take the right financial steps this year. www.inconcertfinancialgroup.com

The opportunity to reinvent yourself in the New Year is not just for older people. Many people seek self improvement this time of year. Your audacious ambitions like getting straight A’s or buying a new car are achievable little by little. We want to personally motivate you to write down some goals you would like to achieve for this year. Try not to think about it as doing more work. Book Shelf The T.D. Jakes Relationship Bible T.D. Jakes We have made it to a new year! With everyone making New Year’s resolutions of getting healthier, and working out and being more disciplined, I thought what better resolution than to become more dedicated to reading the one book that could change your life. My pick to start 2015 off is the Bible, but not just any Bible… The T.D. Jakes Relationship Bible. We are surrounded by relationships every day; whether it’s with family and friends or with co-worker or with the bus driver that we see every morning taking us to work. There are Bibles geared toward strengthening men, women, teens, children, students as individuals. This Bible is geared towards strengthening individuals as they are engage in a relationship with God, His Word and with other people. What sets this version of the Bible apart from others is not that T.D. Jakes chose to use the King James Version because he says, “The precision of translation for which it is historically renowned, the simple yet grand language, and it’s majesty of style have made it [his] personal version of choice”. It is his approach to the presentation of the Book. He starts off with explaining to the reader the importance of having a relationship with your Bible, why a relationship is so important and how God’s love for man was established from page one. He provides a 50-day reading plan and a 1-year reading plan, but in my opinion the treasure found in this Bible (other

than the fact that it’s God’s word) is the 150 articles and 10 prayers imbedded within the chapters that provide insight on the subject matter. The articles are broken down into sections: Reflections of God’s Heart, Lessons of the Heart, Relationship Builder, Relationship Breakers, Prayers for Relationships. If you enjoy your Bible and are
ready for a new approach to reading it, this is a good one. If you are a collector of different versions of the Bible, the Relationship Bible is a must have. If you are ready to elevate your relationships on all levels, read this book. It will also make a great gift for someone who needs to work on their relationships. In any case, the T.D. Jakes Relationship Bible is a must have. In the words of the author, “You are invited to begin a life long journey to discovering God’s words of truth for your life and relationships, and to discovering God himself in the words of His Book!”
About The Author
Bishop T.D. Jakes A Ministerial and business visionary, entrepreneurial trailblazer, altruistic philanthropist, and spiritual shepherd to millions around the globe, Bishop Thomas Dexter (T.D.) Jakes, Sr., founded Greater Emmanuel Temple of Faith, his first pastorate, in 1979. It was a small beginning, in a small West Virginia church, pastoring a small, 10-member congregation.
More than 25 years later, Bishop Jakes pastors what Christianity Today calls “one of America’s fastest growing mega-churches.” The Potter’s House, a multiracial, nondenominational church with 50-plus active outreach ministries, has dominated church growth records since its inception in 1996. In its 10-year existence, the church has grown from the 50 families that relocated with the Jakes family from West Virginia to Dallas to more than 30,000 members. Rivaling many corporations, the ministry employs nearly 400 staff members, including full-time finance, human resources, information technology, materials distribution, public relations, publications and television production departments. The Potter’s House is fiscally sound, retiring within four years the financial debt incurred by the 191,000 square feet, $45 million sanctuary construction. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 21

man talk
More than 20 years ago, the Reverend DeForest “Buster” Soaries, Jr. preached a simple, yet profound message based on the account of David and Goliath recorded in I Samuel chapter 17. The Power of a Proper Perspective challenged believers to consider David’s triumph over the giant as being inextricably connected to his perspective on God and the situation (verses 45-47). In other words, David’s perspective—one that was focused on the All-Powerful God and not intimidated by Goliath’s physical presence—ultimately led to victory. And so it is today. Having embarked upon 2015, in all that we do, let us develop and maintain the proper perspective by being mindful of these things. INVITE THE LORD TO DWELL At the beginning of the year, and each new day, it is fitting to intentionally invite the Lord to abide with us. As Paul reminded The Church at Corinth that their bodies were the temples of the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 6: 19), this is the most important place where He should be welcomed to take permanent residence. Further, The Church of The Living God is more than man-made structures of brick and mortar, but individuals—you and me—who comprise the living and breathing Body of Christ. DECLARE AND LIVE BY FAITH Make a declaration for what, by faith, is already done. And as we make these declarations, know that faith is not predicated on what can be discerned by our senses, but what is contained in the Word of God. Fundamentally, living by faith involves believing everything contained in the pages of Genesis through Revelation although we might not understand everything. Further still, because we believe God, our declarations aren’t only reminders of the necessity of faith in the life of the believer (Hebrews 11: 6) but also testaments that regardless of what we might experience throughout the year, we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ who loves us (Romans 8:37)! COVER EVERYTHING UNDER THE BLOOD Exodus 12: 13, The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. Later in verses 24-27, the Israelites were charged to obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for generations following. Because of this, there is no better way to place the year in proper perspective than by applying the blood—not of slain animals during the first Passover, but the final Sacrificial Lamb who died on Calvary—over our lives. Though weapons might be formed against us, they won’t prosper. Why? Because we, and every situation we might face, have been covered under the blood!

REMAIN IN THE WILL OF GOD One of my favorite passages of scripture is Luke 22:42, Father, if it is your will, take this cup away from me; nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done. In this text, Christ was honest with God: Father, I don’t want to go to the cross. And, if there is any way that you can let me avoid this painful experience, please do it! But because I love you, and what you want is more important than anything—including my own comfort—what I want really doesn't matter. Regardless of the cost, the price, and how painful it is, whatever your will is, and whatever you want me to do, I will do it! Not only does this verse show that we can be completely honest with God, more importantly, it shows that we must ultimately grow to the place of total surrender and obedience to the will of the Father. For the believer who earnestly desires to please The Lord, wholeness and fulfillment will only be found in the will of God. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS Thank God, in advance, for what you believe He will do throughout 2015. And by deliberately recalling the specific things that God has done, this should lead to an eruption of praise and saying, “Thank You!”—two words that are not uttered enough in a culture of give me and give me more. But as we count our blessings, let’s establish a new precedent in 2015: The year in which our thanksgiving to God far outweighs our petitions of Him! MOVE FORWARD Philippians 3:12-14, I do not mean that I am already as God wants me to be. I have not yet reached that goal, but I continue trying to reach it and to make it mine. Christ wants me to do that, which is the reason he made me his. Brothers and sisters, I know that I have not yet reached that goal, but there is one thing I always do. Forgetting the past and straining toward what is ahead, I keep trying to reach the goal and get the prize for which God called me through Christ to the life above. In order to accomplish the things that God desires for us, we must forget the mistakes, disappointments, missed opportunities, and setbacks of 2014. Let us move forward knowing that each of those things is a distant memory. Each of these helps us to place 2015 in proper perspective. And regardless of the circumstances and situations that we will inevitably encounter, we will be more than conquerors because we believe God can do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we can imagine.
