All over the world, Christians will be remembering the crucifixion of Jesus, and celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. At sunrise on Easter Sunday morning, believers everywhere will be singing “He Arose” and “He Lives.” Christians will be declaring that Jesus Christ got up from the grave with all power in His hands. “Isn’t that Good News?” When was the last time you shared the Good News with anyone? There is a song that has the line in it, “Said I wasn’t gonna tell nobody, but I couldn’t keep it to myself.” When was the last time you had some news you just couldn’t keep to yourself, you couldn’t wait to tell somebody? We don’t seem to have a problem with talking about the latest headlines in the news; which most of the time is not good news. In fact we spend a good amount of time talking about all of the issues plaguing our communities and the nation at large. Maybe the next time you get into a discussion about the economy, politics, crime, guns, etc., with your friends, co-workers, or family members, take this opportunity to tell them, “I’ve got Good News!” Despite the fact that our lives are often bombarded with problems and hardships, there is always Good News for the believer. Resurrection Sunday is a reminder to every believer that we too possess resurrection power. And we need to let others know that no matter what happens in life or whatever knocks us off our feet, we have the power to get up again. We have resurrection power on the inside. That’s Good News. There’s even more Good News in the Word of God. The Word of God tells us that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains (Matthew 17:20). It tells us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). It tells us that we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). The Bible tells us that with God all things are possible (Mark 10:27). The Bible is full of Good News. The best news of all is that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8) and God loved us so much that He gave His only son as a sacrifice for us (John 3:16). And if that isn’t enough how about this, if we believe that Jesus died on the cross for us and in three days rose from the grave early Resurrection Sunday, then we will have eternal life (Romans 10:9). Now that’s Good News worth sharing!

G&G: Apostle Montgomery, welcome to Grace & Glory. It is a privilege and an honor to talk with you for the first time. We are delighted to be a part of the 40th anniversary celebration of Family Bible Ministries Worldwide, Inc. and to learn about its history past, present and future. I would like to start with you, Apostle Bishop Eddie A. Montgomery, Ph.D. so my first questions are to get to know you better. G&G: Apostle Montgomery, what three words would you use to describe yourself? Apostle Montgomery: Miracles (Supernatural), Wonders (Excellent), Signs (Determined).

I also wanted to be a barber because they wore pretty white jackets and made people look better. An attorney is something that I wanted to become as well, because I wanted to be able to help people with their affairs. G&G: Was it easy or hard to accept the call to preach the gospel? Apostle Montgomery: Yes it was hard accepting the call because I was fearful of the Lord even as a kid, I didn’t want to disappoint the Lord. I thought whatever you do especially for the Lord should be done in excellence.

As we continued doing the food pantry and teaching the people we gained a wider scope for the school’s vision.

Not being familiar with this type of ministry, but willing to follow the vision that God had set is what kept me focused. I knew that I would be criticized, talked about, and laughed at, being Non-Denominational but yet embracing the good in other denominations such as fundamental doctrine and depending upon the power of the Holy Spirit and not being a “stiff shirt” or “having a blown up” shout but yet obligated to grow up.

G&G: What has been your passion and driving force behind the Family Bible Ministry Worldwide? Apostle Montgomery: Growth and edification in the students and alumni along with how they are seeing the need to pass on what they have obtained. G&G: Apostle Montgomery, there have been ministries that closed their doors and pastors that have walked away from ministry. Have you ever wanted to quit and walk away? Apostle Montgomery: Yes, wanted to quit for about 30 seconds, however, walk away No!! G&G: What kept you focused to not throw in the towel during these 40 years? Apostle Montgomery: Love for the Good Lord God, Love for His people and love seeing people born again. The whole heavens rejoice when one soul is saved! I also enjoy seeing the saints maximizing their potential and functioning at the peak of their God given ability. Seeing no excuses, no limitations, no postponements, just have a belly full of “Yes I Can”! G&G: Apostle Montgomery, for someone who is looking for a church home, how would you describe the ministry of Family Bible Ministries Worldwide? Apostle Montgomery: This is a loving, caring, teaching and compassionate ministry. Not a social club but a place to practice the Abundance of Life that Jesus Christ promised us. Not being chased by the devil but being constantly reminded that Jesus Christ came to destroy the works of the devil.

G&G: What would you say to inspire them to visit and join the ministry of Family Bible Ministries Worldwide? Apostle Montgomery: I would give them ideas of what we stand for, like what I previously stated. I would invite them to come and see us. G&G: Apostle Montgomery, would you also give us an overview of the University of Family Bible Ministries Worldwide and what sets it apart from other Bible universities? Apostle Montgomery: We are more geared to helping the person have the abundant life opposed to making a living. Meaning not helping you get a job but have a life that is pleasing to the Good Lord God! G&G: Apostle Montgomery, a similar question, why should an aspiring student choose to study at the Family Bible Ministries Worldwide University? Apostle Montgomery: Because of the godly concern that the faculty and staff have in terms of meeting academic and biblical needs and in terms of pursuing the will and way of the Good Lord God. G&G: Apostle Montgomery, what are your hopes and aspirations for the future of Family Bible Ministries Worldwide? Apostle Montgomery: The students and alumni have a greater desire to know Christian Pastoral and Clinical Counseling and to catch the theme and challenges of the legacy of the University College to be more determined to the great commission in terms of making disciples of all nations. Family Bible has local roots with a global vision. G&G: Where do you believe the Spirit is leading the church and the University?


Q&A Apostle Montgomery: Spirit lead Christians must be trained to take their place in life and be more determined. In many cases the church is over managed and under lead. Seeing clearly what the church needs is three things…… leadership, leadership, leadership. To know the love of Christ and be filled with the fullness of God with our understanding enlightened and revelation of the knowledge of the Good Lord God. G&G: Apostle Montgomery would you share with us any upcoming events planned to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Family Bible Ministries Worldwide? Apostle Montgomery: On the 19th& 20th of March 2016 we extend an invitation to come and join us. I will give historical facts about Family Bible in terms of past, present and the intent of where Family Bible is going in the next 40 years, using experiences and learning from these 40 years to make the next 40 years more productive and accepting the new moves from God being put in to operation. On March 20th we will have a celebration message and a celebration to appreciate staff, faculty, members, students, alumni, family and friends. G&G: Apostle Montgomery, I must ask you with all that is going on in the world today, what do you believe the ‘church body’ should be

saying and doing right now? Apostle Montgomery: We should be properly informed on both the world (natural and supernatural). Realize that the Lord Jesus Christ is the same today, yesterday and forever. The church has the same assignment that it was given- to be the salt and the light, the head and not the tail, above and not beneath, the lender and not the borrower; with the leadership to live to the Glory of God. G&G: Apostle Montgomery, lastly what would you say you know for sure about yourself after leading and guiding Family Bible Ministries Worldwide for 40 years? Apostle Montgomery: That I am called, chosen, appointed and anointed to lead the mission that has been assigned to Family Bible Ministry Worldwide, Inc. and to myself. I know I have surrendered and that God is working, willing and doing in me that I am forgetting those things which are behind looking to things ahead knowing my God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory so that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me and knowing all things work together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose and good pleasure. G&G: Apostle Montgomery we salute you and thank God for you and the work you are doing for the Kingdom of God.

The View of Students

STUDENTS ARE some of the most important people in the UFB. Without the students there would be no need for the University, professors, or instructors. STUDENTS ARE not enrollment statistics, but human beings with feelings and emotions like our own. Therefore, our aim is to treat them like we want to be treated. STUDENTS ARE not a toleration, but they are an appreciation and a celebration. They are precious, so we take responsibilities in providing proper curriculum that they may grow in the grace and the knowledge of the Good Lord God. STUDENTS ARE not dependent on us. Rather, we are dependent on one another in terms of our facilitating, teaching, instructing and responsibilities to the curriculum and Great Commission. STUDENTS must know they are not an interruption to the UFB ministry, but the purpose of our ministry. We are co-laborers together with Christ Jesus. Therefore we are favored with the great opportunity to share the biblical curriculum of this University with our students.

Philosophy

University of Family Bible, is a Christcentered, God-glorifying faith ministry with a worldwide vision. Its objectives are to aid individuals in having a personal relationship 14   March March 2016 2016 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 14

with Christ, and to develop and strengthen believers to attain all they are capable of becoming through education, expression, spiritual understanding, and Christian conduct. Although dynamically involved in various activities throughout the community, University of Family Bible realized the necessity of expanding its services to meet the needs of Christians who wanted to further their Biblically-based education. The Ministry also saw a need for leadership training in the Christian community. Therefore, in 1976, Family Bible Ministries Worldwide took on the responsibility of providing good, sound, Bible educational programs and proper Christian literature. This was accomplished by University of Family Bible & Institute, College, and Seminary. Our goal is to encourage lifestyles that please God and reflect a positive witness. The School is designed to assist all of Gods people in obtaining a balanced Bible education without leaving his/her vocation and/or personal responsibilities. Because of the nature of the training at the University of Family Bible, Institute, College, and Seminary, certificate/degree criteria involve meeting academic requirements as well as proper achievement of the objectives of the School, including positive interpersonal and family relationships and local church involvement. We believe that the Bible is the authority and therefore serves as the basis for what we teach and how we live. The emphasis of our educational program is comprehensive.

University of Family Bible, Institute, College, and Seminary is located at 5300 Edmondson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21229, one mile East of Exit 14 of 695. From downtown Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the school is 15 minutes via Route 40 West on bus route number 23. Continue left at Baltimore National Pike and Edmondson Avenue. Stay on Edmondson Avenue. and your destination is on the right hand side of Edmondson Avenue.

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people (Colossians 3:23) NLT “What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s one of the first questions I ask students during my daily school visits as a journalist. The conversation begins with my learning their name and grade. Sometimes I’ll get an immediate answer. Sometimes I receive a blank look followed by these words, “I don’t know.” I will usually spend an extra minute or so trying to help them discover their true passion. In most situations, their smile and overall facial expression will give me a clue as to what they’re really thinking. Passion may best be described as a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything. Even though a school-aged student may be interested in a particular educational subject it may not translate into a career choice. I was often pressed to answer the very questions I now ask young people, the ones about their plans once they grow up. I guess you could say this conversation about passion has stayed with me since my own school-aged days. It was like a seed planted by the adults in my community. It sure sounded as if they were reading from the same script as my parents. They were the ones who recognized early on that my passion was broadcasting. My mother purchased my first tape recorder. I sat for hours recording my voice into a microphone and then playing it back. Many of my former school classmates now recall the days when I would tape a sheet of paper to the top of a number two pencil and pretend it was a microphone. Needless to say, my attempt to find my passion led to a few classroom disruptions. By the time I turned 14, my passion for broadcasting

was still at an all-time high. It just so happened that my mother performed domestic duties for the local radio station, WNER. She used her connections and friendships with the announcers to help crack open the door of opportunity for me. I remember the day I walked into the studios of the radio station. I wore a pair of brand new gray slacks, a short-sleeved white shirt and a black tie. My mother walked in first and was greeted by the radio station staff members. She introduced me by saying, “This is my son and he wants to be on the radio.” There was a blank look from the radio station manager followed by a response something like this, “He is not old enough at 14, but let’s stay in touch.” This encounter did not destroy my passion of one day becoming one of the people allowed to say my name over the airwaves. A few years later, one of the same announcers stepped into my 12th grade Humanities classroom. He was in search of four students to record a public service announcement on the radio. I raised my hand and was selected for the group assignment. Forty years later, the passion I discovered as a child has led to a fulfilling career. I believe the same thing can happen to you and right now. Take time to ignite passion within yourself and those around you. We are in the Lenten season, a time to reflect, refocus and refresh our faith. The sacrifice of Jesus has given us a reason to rejoice and to be vigilant in our pursuit of growth and meaning in life. Many people struggle with their perception of what it means to be a Christian, which gives them stress, and they often give up trying to live in victory. “So now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world?” (Galatians 4:9.) It is in our best interest to be more open in our faith and in how we approach our worship, prayer life and personal devotions. Keeping the faith is not an option and it will be increasingly essential as we each continue to press toward the mark of the high calling. It is within reach for us as we seek to do God’s will and perfect our faith. Keeping the faith is important to our physical and mental well being as we are strengthened by the hope we have in Jesus. The importance of our salvation goes beyond being spiritually whole. We have the gift of the Holy Spirit which can transform

our hearts and minds. We do not have to settle for less and the Lenten season is a reminder of how a great sacrifice yields a great result. We all have challenges in life but must get beyond them in order to see our vision come to pass. Jesus had one mission and that was Calvary. Nothing was able to stop him from completing his assignment. He was focused on doing the will of the Father. He did not let the opinions of others, doubting disciples, disrespectful thieves or the religious elite stop him from going to Calvary. We cannot let others make us unsure of the vision God has given us. We must hold on to the hope of completing the assignment God has given us and be determined to keep the faith no matter the circumstances. There is always opposition in the face of every opportunity. Keeping the faith will help in these times of internal or external conflict and insure that you have a peace that surpasses understanding. Do not lose heart in the face of your obstacles. Are You Submitted to the Spirit of God or Your Flesh? Are you submitted to the Spirit of God or your flesh? Why am I still single? Well, I am glad that you asked. We all make choices and some choices are more beneficial than others. Some singles have made the choice to be celibate while others have made the choice to take part in casual and illicit sex. In our time of being single, you will have some good seasons and some not so good seasons. No matter the season we are encouraged to be content regardless of our situation. God created us to be in relationships however He did set some standards on how we should conduct ourselves. God tells us that sexual intimacy should only happen between a wife and a husband. Not a girlfriend and boyfriend who are dating. Not a friend with benefits but a husband and wife who are united in marriage. Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband (Hebrews 13:4-MSG). God draws a firm line against casual and illicit sex. God’s standard about intimacy before marriage is very clear. DO NOT engage in casual and illicit sex if you are not married. However there are times when we press pass our spirit and the Word of God and act like we have no clue what God requires. When we ignore our spirit we are showing God that we are submitted to our flesh. Everyone can speak the word but God desires to see us be the very Word that we speak about. Merriam-Webster defines submit as, “To yield oneself to the authority or will of another.” If we are submitted to our flesh and disobedient to the Word of God how do you expect God to bless you with a wife or a husband? We receive the blessings of God when we are obedient to live by His Word (the standard). Standards are the ideas about morally correct and acceptable behavior. Being celibate = Submitting to the Spirit and the standard of God. Partaking in casual and illicit sex before marriage = Submitting to your flesh. We keep saying I am ready to be married but we have not submitted our heart to God. We are still submitted to our flesh. The very reason that some people remain single is that they have submitted to their flesh. They have become out of sync with the will of God for their life. Ladies if we have not submitted to the Spirit of God how are we going to submit to our husbands. If we don’t respect the authority of God how

are you going to respect your husband as the head of the household? Gentleman if you are not submitted to the Spirit of God, how can you expect your wife to follow you? The Word of God tells women to follow your husbands as he follows Christ. If you are not submitted to Christ it is not fair for you to expect your wife to follow you. If you are the head you have to help your wife feel confident that you are able to lead. Why would God bless you with someone who is submitted to His Spirit when you are submitted to your flesh? You will do whatever you want to do whenever you want to do it with no regard to your spouse. God will not give you His best if you are not in position to love and care for the blessing that you are asking for. James 4:7 (AMP) So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you. You can start submitting to the Spirit of God by: 1. Renewing your mind – Romans 12:2 2. Praying – Matthew 6:13 3. Putting on the Whole Armor of God – Ephesians 6:10-18 Once you are submitted and obedient to the Word of God and align your life with the Word of God you are in the best position to receive what God has for you. Being a successful single will always come down to the choices that we make. We can choose to submit to the Spirit or we can choose to submit to our flesh. My pastor Apostle Dr. Karen Bethea stated in one of her sermons that your flesh will keep you out of heaven (The Kingdom) even though your flesh will not inherit the kingdom of God. When we submit to the Spirit of God we can receive the blessing of Deuteronomy 28:1-14. However if you submit to your flesh you will receive the curses of Deuteronomy 28:15-68. When we submit to the Spirit of God we are living a can’t lose life.

At some point or another in our lives we have all been subject to the annoying and relentless phenomenon known simply as, the group text. We’re added without consent and before we know it hurled into an on-going conversation that we nine times out of ten would have much rather had a brief phone call about. Answers are flying in faster than we can respond and if your phone is anything like mine even when you do respond the message won’t go through. It’s awful and sometimes the only solution is to walk away from your phone and pray that by the time you come back the storm is over. But what if that group text is actually our inner dialogue and the conversation isn’t a light and fuzzy surprise baby shower planning text for your Uncle’s sister’s cousin? What happens when you wake up in the morning and the chatter starts up? “You’re late. You’re ALWAYS late. Can you do ANYTHING right? Look at you; you can’t even present yourself well for your interview because you were too LAZY to get up on time and now you have to rush out of the house wrinkled. You didn’t eat breakfast. Now you have to break your budget and stop and get junk food. Not only are you irresponsible you’re fat. You know you’re not going to the gym later. Your day is screwed. You might as well check out and try again tomorrow.” All that chatter because you over slept. That might not be what triggered your last “conversation” but I know it’s safe to say that at some point we have all had this kind of negative, debilitating self-talk. Chatterbox not only identifies what it is, he bluntly states that we all suffer from this relentless dialogue, and then he fearlessly shows us how to stop it. We’re three months in and this year is in full swing so please allow me to present to you what I think could be your most powerful weapon against fear, insecurity, condemnation and discouragement besides the Bible. Crash the Chatterbox Hearing Gods Voice Above All Others is hard to sum up in a few short paragraphs because the biblical truths, personal testimonies and practical solutions this 13-chapter book provides are simply life changing. I first heard about this book at my church during one of our 10-week small group sessions. The title, while catchy, did not prepare me for the mirror I was about to face as I turned the page to find a pastor identifying with the very same crippling thought patterns I often faced daily as I tried to live my life on purpose for God. Furtick states, “I used to think that someone who struggled with the kinds of weaknesses I deal with daily was useless to God. I felt so often like I was drowning in internal dialogue I couldn’t control…I had hoped these problems would finally be fixed when I became a committed Christian. And I had hoped for it each time I experienced spiritual highs along

the way in my journey of faith. But the beat went on.” So how do we stop the chatter? In my favorite chapter of the book Furtick gives a simple solution that most of us would probably over look. He pushes us to finish the thought. What if…that would…God can. To give you an example your conversation would go something like this, “What if I start this business and it fails? That would make me feel like a failure but God can redeem any time that I lose and He promised that all things work for my good so I can step out into this endeavor in faith.” Overall Furtick encourages readers to believe four foundational truths, God says I am, God says He will, God says He has, and God says I can. Furtick aims to show us that as we embrace those truths the lies of the enemy carry less weight and hold no power over us. The book can be read alone or with a group and comes with a set of reflection questions for each section. Without giving too much away I simply want to say, get the book! From the stay at home mom to those in active leadership positions you can rest assured that you'll find yourself within its pages. You have a purpose that you were placed on this earth to fulfill and I can say with total confidence this book will open your eyes to the way that the enemy has attacked your mind. I believe that a passion will be birthed in you to fight for your freedom and I also know that as you get free from the chatter you’ll desire that those around you become free too. Grab a copy for yourself and a friend and dig in! I promise you’ll come up ready to fight!

www.rainn.org Parents are surrounded by messages about child sexual abuse. Talk shows and TV news warn parents about dangers at school, in the home and on the Internet. Despite all the media coverage, parents don’t get much advice about how to talk to their children about sexual abuse and how to prevent it. Talk to your children about sexuality and sexual abuse in ageappropriate terms. • Talking openly and directly about sexuality teaches children that it is okay to talk to you when they have questions. • Teach children the names of their body parts so that they have the language to ask questions and express concerns about those body parts. • Teach children that some parts of their body are private. • Let children know that other people should not be touching or looking at their private parts unless they need to touch them to provide care. If someone does need to touch them in those private areas, a parent or trusted caregiver should be there, too. • Tell children that if someone tries to touch those private areas or wants to look at them, OR if someone tries to show the child their own private parts, they should tell a trusted adult as soon as possible. • All children should be told that it’s okay to say “no” to touches that make them uncomfortable or if someone is touching them in ways that make them uncomfortable and that they should tell a trusted adult as soon as possible. • This can lead to some slightly embarrassing situations, such as a child who then says they don’t want to give a relative a hug or kiss! Work with your child to find ways to greet people that don’t involve uncomfortable kinds of touch. • Talking openly about sexuality and sexual abuse also teaches children that these things don’t need to be “secret.” Abusers will sometimes tell a child that the abuse is a secret. Let your children know that if someone is touching them or talking to them in ways that make them uncomfortable that it shouldn’t stay a secret. 26   26   March March 2016 2016 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory

• Make sure to tell your child that that they will not get into trouble if they tell you this kind of secret. • Don’t try to put all this information into one big “talk” about sex. • Talking about sexuality and sexual abuse should be routine conversations. Be involved in your child’s life. • Be interested in your child’s activities. • Ask your child about the people they go to school with or play with. • If your child is involved in sports, go to games and practices. Get to know the other parents and coaches. • If your child is involved in afterschool activities or daycare, ask them what they did during the day. • Talk about the media. • If your child watches a lot of television or plays video games, watch or play with them. • Use examples from TV or games that you have watched or played together to start up conversations about sexuality and sexual abuse. • Know the other adults that your child might talk to. • Children sometimes feel that they cannot talk to their parents. • Know the other trusted adults in your child’s life. Be available. • Make time to spend with your child. • Let your child know that they can come to you if they have questions or if someone is talking to them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable. • Be sure to follow up on this! If your child comes to you with concerns or questions, make time to talk to them. When you empower your child to say “no” to unwanted touch and teach them that they can come to you with questions and concerns, you take critical steps to preventing child sexual abuse. Happy Women’s History Month! This month has been set aside to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. I salute all of you amazing women this month and every month. Womanhood is something to be celebrated and cherished. We are life-givers. There is power in our femininity. We are beautiful inside and out. Last month we started a series on sisterhood. I put out a poll to see what topics you ladies would be interested in hearing about and sisterhood came up several times. It is my desire through this series to examine sisterhood from various angles and encourage you to strengthen your existing sister relationships and encourage you to create and nurture new healthy sister relationships. In part 1 of our series we discussed the need for sister relationships. I understand that this topic can be sensitive because let’s face it as women, most if not all of us have been hurt by another woman we thought was our friend. But we cannot allow the hurt we have experienced and the enemy to cause us to devalue the importance of those relationships in our lives. “Friendship is essential to the soul.” In order for us to experience the abundance that God has intended for our lives, we must have an abundance of love and relationships. We must realize that God desires to bless us; however, he uses people to do so. In part 2, let’s examine the different types of sister connections we will experience, how we draw them, and how to keep them healthy. The three categories of connections we encounter in our lives are REASON, SEASON, and LIFERS. There are women that we are only meant to connect with for a REASON. These are short-term relationships that are not intended for longevity. The REASON that God has allowed our paths to cross could vary and include anything from work on a project together at school or church, exchange information about motherhood or a business, share information that is an answer to a question we have, and many other options that fit into this category. Even though these relationships are often the shortest, we cannot underestimate their importance. These connections can be short-lived but powerful. I find it amazing that God has allowed my path to cross with some phenomenal women who while in their presence at a workshop, or running into them at a store, I learned something that I was able to carry with me for years. 28   March 2016 | Grace&Glory

The first category of individuals is usually pretty simple to identify, it’s the next two categories that often get confused and cause us the most grief. There are women we are meant to connect with for only a SEASON. These relationships can be difficult because often times we may not know the duration of the season that we are intended to walk together. We miss out when we end the season too soon and we take on extra weight when we extend the season beyond what God designed. The key to these relationships is identifying when the SEASON is shifting. Many times when the season shifts we do not have to necessarily cut the person off completely, we may be able to just add some healthy space and shift the dynamics. Then there are the people I call LIFERS. I know who my “LIFERS” are and I tell them all the time that they are stuck with me. Psychologists say that any friendship that lasts at least 7 years will last a lifetime. All of our LIFERS come through the SEASON category first but at some point we shift and recognize that our friendship is intended for longevity. The key to keeping these relationships healthy is sensitivity to the shifts and seasons it will endure. My friendships intended for longevity have experienced everything from new marriages, new babies, divorce, death of a loved one, relocation and more. None of those have to strain or end the friendship if both people are truly sensitive to small adjustments that need to be made and especially if the lines of communication are open. When there is trust and intimacy present it is easy to maintain healthy friendships into longevity. Sister friendships can literally change our lives. The amazing women that God allows our paths to cross with will help elevate us, celebrate with us, wipe our tears, love our children, share recipes, go shopping with us and so much more. In order to enjoy these relationships we must use discernment and listen for God’s wisdom so that we proceed with caution. On October 21, 2015, Martins West Caterers was the place to be! We witnessed the celebration of the year, as Alonzo and Mary Jones renewed their Wedding vowels. This beautiful and devoted couple shares the pastorate of the thriving FAMILY LIFE GLOBAL MINISTRIES, who hosted this affair in grand style. Family and Friends from as far as Kenya, East Africa to New Orleans, Louisiana flanked the couple and showered them with gifts of love. Also several classmates of these Douglass High School sweethearts showed their support including The Rev. Ardie Shaw, Ms. Stephanie Riddick and Saxophonist Isaac Parham who serenaded the couple with love songs throughout the evening. However the greatest statement of the evening was made by the more than 50 Bishops and Clergy from across the State who turned out to support this favored couple on a Bible Study night. The renowned Dr. Frank M. Reid III officiated in the place of the original officiator the late Dr. Harold A. Carter, Sr. Psalmist Terrence Hundley belted out the theme song of the event "I CHOOSE YOU AGAIN" replacing the Legendary Douglass Miller. The original Best Man Mr. Gary March and Matron of Honor Ms. Marlene Whitfield were both in attendance and toasted the Honorees. The parents of the groom Rev. Dr. Roosevelt & Mrs. Marion Jones are deceased; however the parents of the bride were present as well as Baltimore's Own Jones Brothers. The Mistress of Ceremony, Lady Marla Hall Reid captivated the audience with her charm and sense of humor. The capacity crowd was brought to their feet, when Alonzo and Mary secretly appeared as the curtain dropped with Alonzo singing "Here and Now" as he had done 25 years ago. In a day in time when traditional marriage is rapidly declining and 55 percent of marriages are ending in divorce, the couple credits their 25 year success to God and Godly principles. Indicative of those principles and the love that characterizes Alonzo and Mary, proceeds from this event were shared with the GGC School of Kenya to purchase uniforms for the entire school. Jasmin K. Jones, the only child of this celebrated couple, along with Mrs. Courtney Epps were the event coordinators. Jasmin stated that her parents were well deserved of this honor and every gift bestowed upon them; and her deepest prayer is to be able to plan for their 50th celebration!!!

Mary and Martha was in a dilemma. Their brother was sick – sick to the point of death. Word was sent by Mary and Martha to Jesus to come see about His friend Lazarus. However Jesus was elsewhere with His disciples and did not immediately respond to the sisters’ request. How do you feel when the person you are depending on does not show up for something as urgent as a life or death situation? They were friends with Jesus. For us in life, we acknowledge certain people as our friend. You should be able to depend on your friends in the time of need. Yes, [even after the scripture declares in Philippians 3:3 that we are to put no confidence in flesh but in mankind] we still expect for our friends to be there for us. However, this is Jesus, the Son of the living God, surely He can be depended upon. Come on Jesus, Lazarus’ life is dependent upon your arrival. Jesus yet still does not come. In the meantime Jesus tells the disciples that Lazarus is asleep. I wonder how Mary and Martha felt. He loved the family but does not show up – not cool. Eventually Jesus tells His disciples that Lazarus was dead and He was glad for their sakes. Why? Common sense would tell you in the natural there has to be a burial. Why would Jesus be glad for their sakes? We will soon find out. Jesus rolls into town four days after Lazarus’ death. What good is that to the family, Lazarus is dead – but not only is Lazarus dead, he was laid to rest in a cave. Mary does not even go to where Jesus is. Why? Who knows? Only God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit knows what’s about to go down. Martha tells Jesus that if he was there she knew Lazarus would not have died. Does that sound like blame or accusation? Jesus does not even acknowledge that. To some degree Martha understood the Holy Spirit in operation through Jesus. She understood that even then Jesus could do something, but she was not sure what. There is one thing to be dying and someone comes and breathes life into you. It is quite another thing when that person is dead for four days and you are coming to bring life back into them. Not many finite minds could comprehend that. It was not until Mary heard that Jesus was asking for her that she shows up. All the Jewish leaders who were with her at the house followed here to where Jesus was. Some of the Jewish leaders said, “See how much he loved him!” However, others said, “Surely the one who opened the eyes of the blind man could have kept this man from dying, couldn’t he?” Is that how we human beings limit God? We say, Jesus could get me a job, but not heal the cancer in my mother’s body. Jesus could put the Jones’ marriage back together, but he cannot fix mine. Limitations, limitations, limitations. Jesus tells them to remove the stone from the cave. What? Has Jesus lost his mind? This was never done before. Martha’s mind cannot comprehend that Jesus was able to bring back to life someone who was dead for four days. Maybe if it was just after Lazarus died, perhaps the mind can comprehend that. We can stretch it to perhaps a day – but after that, you Jesus have lost the masses. Jesus then acknowledged to His Father that He knew He always hears Him. However, it was not for Himself that He acknowledged His Father, but so that the crowd may belief that He was sent of God. After saying this, Jesus shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” Lazarus came out, his hands and feet tied with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus told them, “Untie him, and let him go.” Jesus shows them clearly that He is the Resurrection. The glory of God revealed through His Son. What are you dealing with that seems like it has been dead four days, four months or four years? Are you aware that Jesus the Resurrected One can resurrect whatever he so desires in your life. This is not the time to give up. This is the time to make a liar out of the devil and show forth God’s glory by giving Jesus that dead thing you have been dealing with. You are still alive but that situation is dead. He is the Giver of Life. He sees you and knows what you are going through. Don’t keep it another day, just cast that care over on Jesus and walk away. I encourage you today to disregard how big that dead thing is in your life, your marriage, your children, or career. Hand it over to God. He knows that it is stinking, but He loves you enough to deal with the stench. In other words, His love for you is stronger than any stench. Prayer: Father, in the name of Jesus, I don’t know where to begin with all the stench of dead things in my life, but I know You do. Therefore today, I am handing over all of the stench of my past, my own four days to You. I thank You for taking them from me – it was truly heavy. Now I live with expectation to see Your resurrection power operating in my Donna life, amen. March is National Nutrition Month Celebrate with your family by trying some of these helpful and healthful suggestions. SENSIBLE SNACKING – Encourage your children to eat more fruits and vegetables by setting an example! Have carrots and celery or cut-up fruit readily available for the family to snack on. A LOW-CALORIE SNACK – Half a large pepper offers you a full day’s worth of vitamin C. Munch on a pepper, just as you would on an apple, for a delicious, low-calorie snack. CHERRIES FOR YOUR HEALTH – Cherries are a great choice, whether fresh or dried. They are rich in fiber and vitamin C, and are associated with heart health and reducing the risk of cancer. Cherries also are rich in melatonin, which may help with sleep! FRESH OR FROZEN – Frozen fruits and vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh. Toss carrots, broccoli, or corn into canned soup, or make a fruit smoothie for a quick, delicious breakfast. FIBER FOR DIGESTIVE HEALTH – Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables gives you fiber that keeps your digestive tract healthy and helps protect against diseases such as diverticulosis. THE BENEFITS OF BLUE AND PURPLe – All fruits and vegetables from the blue and purple color family contain flavonoids, the most powerful phytochemicals found in nature. Phytochemicals decrease one’s risk of cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and much more! CARBOHYDRATE FACTS – Excess calories are fattening, carbohydrates are not. ‘SOFT’ FAT IS BETTER – Choose your fat wisely. Limit your intake of “hard” fat, such as lard and butter, and use more “soft” fat, such as olive oil and canola oil. HUNGER HELP – Fiber-rich breads, cereals, and pastas curb your hunger. They also help with weight management. WHOLE-GRAIN GOODNESS – Brown rice, whole-wheat bread, and whole-wheat crackers contain more B vitamins, potassium, and fiber than processed white varieties. RESTAURANT ADVICE – When dining out, ask for whole-grain foods! Some Italian restaurants offer whole-wheat pasta or pizza crusts. Ask for brown rice at Asian restaurants. Your body recovers and repairs while you are sleeping. Sleep also can affect your weight and mood. A PERFECT START TO THE DAY – Start your day off right with oatmeal, an excellent source of whole grains. Spruce your oatmeal up with some cranberries, apples, and nuts! WHICH CEREAL TO CHOOSE – When choosing cereal, look for those that contain at least 3 grams (g) fiber/serving, no more than 6 g sugar/ serving, and no Trans fat. THE FEWER, THE BETTER – When it comes to choosing meat, the fewer the legs, the better. Chicken has two legs, thus it is a better option than pork, which has four legs. FISH FOR OMEGA-3S – Fish contain significant amounts of healthy omega-3 fatty acids that promote heart health. When purchasing fish, buy domestic, wild varieties and stay current on the latest news. FOOD BUDGET BASICS – You can eat a healthy diet without destroying your food budget by planning your weekly meals before you shop and sticking to your list. Buy nonperishable foods in bulk. Leave the kids at home, if possible. Never shop on an empty stomach. NUTRIENT-DENSE WHOLE FOODS ARE BEST – Supplements are incomplete substitutes for nutrient-dense, whole foods. Grown from the ground up, real food offers a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, protein, and phytochemicals that work together in your body. READY-TO-GO LUNCH – Pack your lunch the night before. This way you can easily “grab and go” in the morning and avoid eating fast-food or a highly processed, fattening meal in a box. It is as simple as skipping the cheese on your burger, choosing carbonated fruit-flavored water instead of a regular soda, or substituting pork sausage with turkey sausage. THE POWER OF PHYTOCHEMICALS – Phytochemicals are a key component of foods. These tiny compounds help to prevent certain chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. DIGESTIVE HEALTH – Probiotics, found in many yogurts, are likely to help improve gut health, but they are not a “cure” for digestive problems. The calories from juice can add up fast! GERM WARNING – Did you know that the average in-sink garbage disposal contains about 1000 times more germs than the average toilet? At least once a week, clean the rubber stopper with a diluted bleach solution to avoid contamination. In Loving Memory Vanity Vanity passed away last month at the age of 57; if you don't know her by name, you definitely know her gorgeous face. Singer and actress "Vanity" was a member of the girl group Vanity 6. She played the love interest of Prince in one of my favorite movies “Purple Rain”; she also played in some of my other favorite old school movies "The Last Dragon” and "Action Jackson". Vanity renounced her name and Hollywood lifestyle a long time ago, and began preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Vanity stated, "When I was Vanity it was all about me, but when I'm preaching the word of God, it's Jesus Christ speaking through me. Erica Bratton-McCullough The 43 year old anointed songbird, member of Donald Lawrence &The Tri City Singers passed away last month after a long battle with kidney disease. Erica's voice is the lead on the hit song "When The Saints Go To Church" one of my favorite songs by Donald Lawrence & The Tri City Singers. Her musical attributes spread throughout the industry in stage plays, singing background for various artists, and soundtracks for motion pictures (Boycott and The Associate). She is a native of North Carolina, however for the last 10 plus years she’s been in Baltimore working alongside Pastor Shawn & Lady Faye Bell, as Minister of Music at The Greater Paradise Christian Center; she was also over their Children’s Ministry. A wake musical tribute was held at Greater Paradise featuring Jason Nelson, Maurette Brown-Clark, Melonie Daniels, Isaiah Thomas, The Voices of Carter Memorial, Khare Hawkins, April Hall, and others; it was her wish that she, her husband and church family could be in worship together one more time. There was a final celebration at her home church in North Carolina with Donald Lawrence & The TriCity Singers. man talk things, peace also involves reconciliation. Peace, therefore, is active (Matthew 5:9, Hebrews 12:14). Rather than simply avoiding conflict in the name of peace, let us become peace agents—those who purposefully and intentionally pursue peace in our homes, communities, and houses of worship. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS PATIENCE Similar to other aspects of The Fruit, patience is centered on our reactions to others—especially when they offend us or do things that are unfair and unjust. But instead of responding in ways that are justifiable by our human emotions, growing to consistently display this element of our Christian character leads us to respond to our fellow man in the same manner that God responds to us: by being compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love (Psalm 103:8). THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS KINDNESS Although I don’t know who originally coined this phrase, many of us have likely seen it throughout social media or cyberspace: Say what you mean but don’t say it mean. Selah. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS GOODNESS Brothers, do we have a benevolent spirit? Do we seek to do good to those who are unable to do so for themselves? Are we moved to minister to the least of these according to Matthew 25:31-46? THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS FAITHFULNESS As men of God, we should be dependable. When we commit ourselves to various activities, we should see them to completion. Are you a man of your word? Do you require reminders in order to fulfill your responsibilities? Regardless of what the past has been, today, like each day, is a new day and offers the opportunity to do better and to be better by the grace of Almighty God. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS GENTLENESS Because of the culture in which we live, humility is often perceived as weakness rather than strength. Especially for men, needing the assistance of others is erroneously associated with less-than-flattering connotations. As a teenager, the best advice in this area came from my pastor and mentor, Bishop Roderick Caesar, Jr., “Be teachable.” Not only does the humble man depend on The Lord (Proverbs 3:5-6) but he also surrounds himself with a multitude of counselors (Proverbs 11:14). Throughout this Lenten Season, perhaps we should consider how our views of humility might need to be revised in light of the character of Christ. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS SELF-CONTROL Life, especially the Christian life, involves learning to develop selfcontrol—the ability to master our desires and passions rather than these things mastering us. To borrow a psychological term, delayed gratification refers to an individual’s ability to defer pleasure in order to obtain something, usually of greater value, that he or she ultimately desires. As we face enticing distractions, brothers, let’s delay gratification. Specifically, let’s learn to view the way of escape (I Corinthians 10:13) for what it really is—a window of opportunity that we must crawl through rather than a gaping door that will always be available!

Galatians 5:22-23: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. Although the Lenten Season is upon us, I won’t ask you to give up anything for 40 days. Instead, I challenge you to consider what you will take on, not for 40 days, but for the rest of your life. As a follow-up to last month’s column, let’s briefly return to the 9 aspects of The Fruit of The Spirit and how we can use these 40 days of preparation as an opportunity to be more intentional about displaying these attributes in our lives. Let’s look closer… THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS LOVE Contextually, Paul is referencing agape love or love that is selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional. To illustrate this idea, Romans 5: 8 is perhaps the greatest example: But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. In other words, as there was nothing that we did to earn God’s love, there is nothing that we can do to stop God from loving us (Romans 8:38-39). Contrary to the ways of the world, Christ instructs and expects us to love all people—including our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48). So, what’s the lesson? Brothers, we have not loved until we love those who do not, and perhaps never will, love us in return. Though a sobering truth, may this Lenten Season be the beginning of the display of agape love—true love that seeks nothing in return. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS JOY Philippians 4:11-12: …for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Although we’ve certainly heard it before, it’s worth sharing again: joy and happiness are not synonymous. While happiness is often predicated on our temporary, tangible comforts, joy transcends our present state and position in life.
